Conformational and Solvent Effects on the Photoinduced Electron Transfer Dynamics of a Zinc Phthalocyanine-Benzoperylenetriimide Conjugate: A Nonadiabatic Dynamics Simulation.

Herein, we employed a combination of static electronic structure calculations and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations at linear-response time dependent density functional theory (LR-TDDFT) level with the optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OT-RSH) functional to explore the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics of a zinc phthalocyanine-benzoperylenetriimide (ZnPc-BPTI) conjugate. Due to the flexibility of the linker, we identified two major conformations: the stacked conformation (ZnPc-BPTI-1) and the extended conformation (ZnPc-BPTI-2). Since the charge transfer states are much lower than the lowest local excitation in ZnPc-BPTI-1, which is contrary to ZnPc-BPTI-2, the ultrafast electron transfer (~3.6 ps) is only observed in the nonadiabatic simulations of ZnPc-BPTI-1 upon local excitation around the absorption maximum of ZnPc. However, when considering the solvent effects in benzonitrile: the lowest S1 states are both charge transfer states from ZnPc to BPTI for different conformers. Subsequent nonadiabatic dynamics simulations indicate that both conformers experience ultrafast electron transfer in benzonitrile with two time constants of 90 [100] fs and 1.40 [1.43] ps. Our present work not only agrees well with previous experimental study, but also points out the important role of conformational changes and solvent effects in regulating the photodynamics of organic donor-acceptor conjugates.

Screened optimally tuned range separated hybrid functional for solvated low bandgap molecular systems.

The description of electronic properties of low bandgap molecular system is often performed by using density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent (TD) DFT calculations with the optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OT-RSH) functional, as it contains the necessary ingredients to reliably predict charge transfer excitations. However, the range separating parameter (ω) is system-dependent and its optimization, including the chemical environment, is intricate. Refaely-Abramson et al. demonstrated that the gap renormalization in molecular crystals, a ground state property, can be represented by an OT-RSH functional screened by ɛstatic [Phys. Rev. B 88, 081204(R) (2013)], the zero frequency scalar dielectric constant. In this study, we propose the use of an OT-RSH functional screened by the scalar dielectric constant in the high frequency limit (OT-sRSH), ɛ∞, an appropriate constraint for vertical ionization energies or excitations in a dielectric environment. We have performed calculations for S,N-heteroacene derivatives in tetrahydrofuran and dichloromethane. The "unscreened" OT-RSH functional tends to underestimate experimental ionization potentials (IPs) and optical gaps (Egs) by up to 1.5 and 0.5eV, respectively. In contrast, OT-sRSH functional calculations underestimate IPs and Egs by only 0.4 and 0.2eV. We also compared the OT-sRSH results to explicitly solvated OT-RSH functional calculations for oligothiophenes in dioxane, benzene in ammonia, and methylene blue in water. We observe that both the approaches perform similarly for weakly interacting intermolecular systems and deviate for solvent-solute interacting systems, as expected. In conclusion, the OT-sRSH functional can describe molecular systems with environmental polarization effects accurately, a step toward describing realistic molecular systems.

Thiocarbonyl-Bridged N-Heterotriangulenes for Energy Efficient Triplet Photosensitization: A Theoretical Perspective.

Structurally-rigid metal-free organic molecules are of high demand for various triplet harvesting applications. However, inefficient intersystem crossing (ISC) due to large singlet-triplet gap ( ) and small spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between lowest excited singlet and triplet often limits their efficiency. Excited electronic states, fluorescence and ISC rates in several thiocarbonyl-bridged N-heterotriangulene ( S-HTG) with systematically increased thione content ( 0-3) are investigated implementing polarization consistent time-dependent optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid. All S-HTGs are dynamically stable and also thermodynamically feasible to synthesize. Relative energies of several low-lying singlets ( ) and triplets ( ), and their excitation nature (i. e., or ) and SOC are determined for these S-HTGs in dichloromethane. Low-energy optical peak displays gradual red-shift with increasing thione content due to relatively smaller electronic gap resulted from greater degree of orbital delocalization. Significantly large SOC due to different orbital-symmetry and heavy-atom effect produces remarkably high ISC rates ( ~1012 s-1) for enthalpically favoured ( ) channel in these S-HTGs, which outcompete radiative fluorescence rates (~108 s-1) even directly from higher lying optically bright singlets. Importantly, high energy triplet excitons of ~1.7 eV resulting from such significantly large ISC rates from non-fluorescent make these thiocarbonylated HTGs ideal candidates for energy efficient triplet harvest including triplet-photosensitization.

Benchmarking DFT-based excited-state methods for intermolecular charge-transfer excitations.

Intermolecular charge-transfer is a highly important process in biology and energy-conversion applications where generated charges need to be transported over several moieties. However, its theoretical description is challenging since the high accuracy required to describe these excited states must be accessible for calculations on large molecular systems. In this benchmark study, we identify reliable low-scaling computational methods for this task. Our reference results were obtained from highly accurate wavefunction calculations that restrict the size of the benchmark systems. However, the density-functional theory based methods that we identify as accurate can be applied to much larger systems. Since targeting charge-transfer states requires the unambiguous classification of an excited state, we first analyze several charge-transfer descriptors for their reliability concerning intermolecular charge-transfer and single out the charge-transfer distance calculated based on the variation of electron density upon excitation (DCT) as an optimal choice for our purposes. In general, best results are obtained for orbital-optimized methods and among those, the maximum overlap method proved to be the most numerically stable variant when using the initial MOs as reference orbitals. Favorable error cancellation with optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid functionals and a rather small basis set can provide an economical yet reasonable wavefunction when using time-dependent density functional theory, which provides relevant information about the excited-state character to be used in the orbital-optimized methods. The qualitative agreement makes these fast calculations attractive for high-throughput screening applications.

Understanding remarkably high triplet quantum yield in thione analogs of perylenediimide: A detailed theoretical study.

The diverse and tunable electronic structures of perylenediimide (PDI), together with its high thermal and chemical stability, make the compound suitable for applications in bioimaging, electrical, and optical devices. However, a large singlet-triplet gap (ΔES-T) and almost zero spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between the lowest excited singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) restrict intersystem crossing (ISC) in highly fluorescent pristine PDI, yielding a near zero triplet quantum yield (ΦT). Interestingly, a thione analogs of PDI with varied S content (mS-PDIs, m = 1-4) was experimentally shown to yield ΦT ∼ 1.0 through efficient ISC. Time-dependent optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid calculations are performed to rationalize the experimentally observed red-shifted optical absorption and also the remarkably high ISC with almost zero radiative fluorescence reported for these mS-PDIs. To this end, the relative energies of low-lying excited singlets Sn (n = 1, 2) and a few triplets Tn(n = 1-3), along with their nature (nπ* or ππ*), are assessed for each of the mS-PDIs studied in chloroform. To our surprise and contrary to the earlier reports, both S1 and T1 are found to be of the same ππ* character, originating from the highest occupied to lowest unoccupied orbital transition, which, therefore, leads to a still large ΔES-T and vanishingly small SOC, as expected from the identical wavefunction symmetry. Increasing S content lowers S1(ππ*) due to a greater extent of π-delocalization, which well complements and supports the observed red-shift. More importantly, the T2 (or T3) closely lying to the S1 is of nπ* and, therefore, produces a relatively smaller ΔES-T and larger SOC. Detailed kinetics analysis suggests S1(ππ*) → T2(nπ*) is the primary ISC channel for all mS-PDIs, which is responsible for the remarkably high ΦT observed. In addition, comparable SOC and ΔES-T produce similar ISC rates for all mS-PDIs.

Delocalized electronic excitations and their role in directional charge transfer in the reaction center of Rhodobacter sphaeroides.

In purple bacteria, the fundamental charge-separation step that drives the conversion of radiation energy into chemical energy proceeds along one branch-the A branch-of a heterodimeric pigment-protein complex, the reaction center. Here, we use first principles time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) with an optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid functional to investigate the electronic and excited-state structure of the six primary pigments in the reaction center of Rhodobacter sphaeroides. By explicitly including amino-acid residues surrounding these six pigments in our TDDFT calculations, we systematically study the effect of the protein environment on energy and charge-transfer excitations. Our calculations show that a forward charge transfer into the A branch is significantly lower in energy than the first charge transfer into the B branch, in agreement with the unidirectional charge transfer observed experimentally. We further show that the inclusion of the protein environment redshifts this excitation significantly, allowing for energy transfer from the coupled Qx excitations. Through analysis of transition and difference densities, we demonstrate that most of the Q-band excitations are strongly delocalized over several pigments and that both their spatial delocalization and charge-transfer character determine how strongly affected they are by thermally-activated molecular vibrations. Our results suggest a mechanism for charge-transfer in this bacterial reaction center and pave the way for further first-principles investigations of the interplay between delocalized excited states, vibronic coupling, and the role of the protein environment in this and other complex light-harvesting systems.

Accurate non-adiabatic couplings from optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functionals.

Precise theoretical calculations of non-adiabatic couplings, which describe the interaction between two Born-Oppenheimer surfaces, are important for the modeling of radiationless decay mechanisms in photochemical processes. Here, we demonstrate that accurate non-adiabatic couplings can be calculated in the framework of linear-response time-dependent density functional theory by using non-empirical, optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OT-RSH) functionals. We focus on molecular radicals, in which ultrafast non-radiative decay plays a crucial role, to find that the OT-RSH functional compares well to wave-function-based reference data and competes with the accuracy of semi-empirical CAM-B3LYP calculations. Our findings show that the OT-RSH approach yields very accurate non-adiabatic couplings and, therefore, provides a computationally efficient alternative to wave-function-based techniques.

An optimally tuned range-separated hybrid starting point for ab initio GW plus Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations of molecules.

The ab initio GW plus Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE, where G is the one particle Green's function and W is the screened Coulomb interaction) approach has emerged as a leading method for predicting excitations in both solids and molecules with a predictive power contingent upon several factors. Among these factors are the (1) generalized Kohn-Sham eigensystem used to construct the GW self-energy and to solve the BSE and (2) the efficacy and suitability of the Tamm-Dancoff approximation. Here, we present a detailed benchmark study of low-lying singlet excitations from a generalized Kohn-Sham (gKS) starting point based on an optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OTRSH) functional. We show that the use of this gKS starting point with one-shot G0W0 and G0W0-BSE leads to the lowest mean absolute errors (MAEs) and mean signed errors (MSEs), with respect to high-accuracy reference values, demonstrated in the literature thus far for the ionization potentials of the GW100 benchmark set and for low-lying neutral excitations of Thiel's set molecules in the gas phase, without the need for self-consistency. The MSEs and MAEs of one-shot G0W0-BSE@OTRSH excitation energies are comparable to or lower than those obtained with other functional starting points after self-consistency. Additionally, we compare these results with linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations and find GW-BSE to be superior to TDDFT when calculations are based on the same exchange-correlation functional. This work demonstrates tuned range-separated hybrids used in combination with GW and GW-BSE can greatly suppress starting point dependence for molecules, leading to accuracy similar to that for higher-order wavefunction-based theories for molecules without the need for costlier iterations to self-consistency.

Ultrafast charge transfer in a nonfullerene all-small-molecule organic solar cell: a nonadiabatic dynamics simulation with optimally tuned range-separated functional.

Herein, we have employed linear-response time dependent density functional theory (LR-TDDFT)-based nonadiabatic dynamics simulations to investigate the ultrafast charge transfer in a nonfullerene all-small-molecule donor-acceptor (D-A) system formed by a porphyrin small-molecule donor ZnP and a recently developed nonfullerene small-molecule acceptor 6TIC, during which the optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OT-RSH) functional was adopted. In combination with static electronic structure calculations, several important conclusions were drawn. Firstly, the ZnP and 6TIC are more likely combined together non-covalently in parallel rather than in perpendicular to form ZnP-6TIC due to the much larger adsorption energies, i.e. -44.6 kcal mol-1vs. -25.2 kcal mol-1. Secondly, the excited state properties obtained by OT-RSH functionals seem more consistent with the experimental results compared to their untuned versions. Specifically, the energy of the lowest charge transfer (CT) state was predicted to be smaller than the lowest lying local excitation (LE) states using the OT-RSH functional-based LR-TDDFT calculations, which is beneficial for the charge transfer process that might be crucial for the high power conversion efficiency (PCE) achieved experimentally. In contrast, the untuned RS functionals all predict higher CT state energies, which is contradictory to the high PCE obtained in the experiment. Moreover, strong hybridization upon excitation between these states was revealed, which might be one of the reasons responsible for the high PCE observed in the experiment. Finally, ultrafast excited state relaxation can be completed within 500 fs due to the small energy gaps and the strong nonadiabatic couplings between these states, which is accompanied by ultrafast photoinduced electron transfer from ZnP to 6TIC and photoinduced hole transfer the other way around. The efficient charge transfer processes and the involvement of two charge generation channels might be another cause resulting in the excellent photovoltaic performance of ZnP-6TIC based OSCs. Our present work not only provides solid evidence for elucidating the underlying mechanism observed in previous experiments, but also suggests that the combination of OT-RSH functionals and LR-TDDFT-based nonadiabatic dynamics simulations might be a powerful tool for investigating the excited state dynamics of organic D-A systems, which is crucial for the theoretical design of novel OSCs with better performances in the future.

Stacked Ensemble Machine Learning for Range-Separation Parameters

Density functional theory-based high-throughput materials and drug discovery has achieved tremendous success in recent decades, but its power on organic semiconducting molecules suffered catastrophically from the self-interaction error until the nonempirical but expensive optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OT-RSH) functionals were developed. An OT-RSH transitions from a short-range (semi)local functional to a long-range Hartree-Fock exchange at a distance characterized by a molecule-specific range-separation parameter (ω). Herein, we propose a stacked ensemble machine learning model that provides an accelerated alternative of OT-RSH based on system-dependent structural and electronic configurations. We trained ML-ωPBE, the first functional in our series, using a database of 1970 molecules with sufficient structural and functional diversity, and assessed its accuracy and efficiency using another 1956 molecules. Compared with nonempirical OT-ωPBE, ML-ωPBE reaches a mean absolute error of 0.00504a0-1 for optimal ω's, reduces the computational cost by 2.66 orders of magnitude, and achieves comparable predictive power in optical properties.

Assessment of the Performance of Optimally Tuned Range‐Separated Hybrid Functionals for Nuclear Magnetic Shielding Calculations

AbstractThe performance of optimally tuned range‐separated hybrid (OT‐RSH) functional calculations in predicting accurate isotropic nuclear magnetic shielding (σ) and chemical shift values is examined. To that end, the results of OT‐RSH and other approximate density functional theory calculations are assessed against recently published benchmark CCSD(T) calculations for a test set consisting of several molecules and bond types. It is found that for atoms in single bonds with a large paramagnetic contribution to σ, OT‐RSH offers a significant improvement in prediction of shielding constants over popular semi‐local and hybrid density functionals, yielding non‐empirical results that are as accurate as those of semi‐empirical density functionals often used for prediction of shielding constants. This success is attributed to the improved fundamental gap prediction of the OT‐RSH approach. For atoms in multiple bonds, however, larger errors often persist. By comparing OT‐RSH and recently reported double‐hybrid functional results, the remaining difficulties are traced to significant non‐local correlation.

Electronic Structure of Metal-Organic Complexes from an Optimally-Tuned Range-Separated Hybrid Functional

Metal-organic complexes, e.g., metal-porphyrins, -phthalocyanines, and –corroles, pose significant challenges to first principles theory, often due to competition between different electronic configurations and the need to describe localized and delocalized electronic states on the same footing. This is even more so for spin-crossover compounds, where different spin-configurations are very close in energy by definition. Here, I will present our recent progress on these issues, based on the general strategy of an optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid density functional. I will emphasize quantities that can be verified experimentally via spectroscopy. I will present applications to specific systems, including gas-phase molecules, solvated molecules, and molecular crystals, and discuss successes and remaining challenges.

Spin-State Energetics of Fe Complexes from an Optimally Tuned Range-Separated Hybrid Functional.

We assess the performance of the optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OT-RSH) functional approach in predicting the ground-state electronic configuration and spin-state energetics of complexes that can potentially exhibit multiple spin configurations. To that end, we investigate eight iron complexes: four spin-crossover complexes, for which reference data from other approximate density functionals are available, and four smaller complexes, for which reference ab initio data are available. We show that the spin-state energetics are mostly governed by the percentage of short-range exact exchange and are only weakly influenced by the choice of the range-separation parameter. However, the electronic structure, especially the fundamental gap, is much more sensitive to the range-separation parameter. We further find that correct prediction of the ground state in spin-crossover compounds requires a reduction in the amount of short-range exact exchange, likely owing to a larger role of static correlation.

Prediction of the lowest charge-transfer excited-state energy at the donor-acceptor interface in a condensed phase using ground-state DFT calculations with generalized Kohn-Sham functionals.

Knowledge of the charge (electron) transfer process at the donor-acceptor interface is required to understand the working mechanisms of different organic photovoltaic materials. Investigating the lowest charge-transfer state in organic donor-acceptor solar cells is important as it allows the destruction/formation of excitons and polarons to be studied, and is directly related to the open circuit voltage. By performing low-cost and feasible calculations of ground-state electronic structures using the Mulliken rule as well as the optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OTRSH) density functional and a regular long-range corrected functional, the lowest charge-transfer (CT) state energies of a series of dimers containing functionalized anthracene (the donor) and tetracyanoethylene (the acceptor) were obtained. The jumping distances of excited electrons during CT were calculated. The polarizable continuum model was applied to account for the effects of the solvent methylene chloride (CH2Cl2) on the lowest CT state energies obtained from gas-phase calculations. The calculated lowest CT state energies of the dimers were close to the corresponding experimental results, with a root mean square deviation (RMSD) of 0.22eV.

An assessment of low-lying excitation energies and triplet instabilities of organic molecules with an ab initio Bethe-Salpeter equation approach and the Tamm-Dancoff approximation.

The accurate prediction of singlet and triplet excitation energies is an area of intense research of significant fundamental interest and critical for many applications. Most calculations of singlet and triplet energies use time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in conjunction with an approximate exchange-correlation functional. In this work, we examine and critically assess an alternative method for predicting low-lying neutral excitations with similar computational cost, the ab initio Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach, and compare results against high-accuracy wavefunction-based methods. We consider singlet and triplet excitations of 27 prototypical organic molecules, including members of Thiel's set, the acene series, and several aromatic hydrocarbons exhibiting charge-transfer-like excitations. Analogous to its impact in TDDFT, we find that the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) overcomes triplet instabilities in the BSE approach, improving both triplet and singlet energetics relative to higher level theories. Finally, we find that BSE-TDA calculations built on effective DFT starting points, such as those utilizing optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functionals, can yield accurate singlet and triplet excitation energies for gas-phase organic molecules.

Shedding Light on the Accuracy of Optimally Tuned Range-Separated Approximations for Evaluating Oxidation Potentials.

There is a surge in the literature on the development of exchange-correlation density functionals for a wide variety of physical and chemical properties. As a recent endeavor toward the systematic and nonempirical design of density functional approximations, optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OT-RSH) models have been introduced. In this work, we propose novel OT-RSH density functionals for predicting the oxidation potentials of organic compounds from different categories. In this regard, detailed analysis of the role of nonempirical optimization of the range separation parameter and importance of short- and long-range exact-like exchange in OT-RSH calculations of the oxidation potential has also been done. It is shown that the newly developed OT-RSH approximations not only perform better than other standard long-range corrected functionals but also in many cases outperform other conventional hybrid functionals with a fixed amount of exact-like exchange. Plus, we find that the proposed functionals describe well the oxidation potentials of compounds for which the tuning of the range separation parameter was not performed. From a different perspective, accountability of the computed frontier orbital energies from the OT-RSH density functionals for estimation of oxidation potentials has also been evaluated. Our results reveal that the negative highest occupied molecular orbital energies of molecules and the negative lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energies of their cations correlate remarkably with the observed oxidation potentials. Admittedly, with more efforts along this line, modern OT-RSH functionals with broader applicability can be released for computational electrochemistry.

Evaluating the GW Approximation with CCSD(T) for Charged Excitations Across the Oligoacenes.

Charged excitations of the oligoacene family of molecules, relevant for astrophysics and technological applications, are widely studied and therefore provide an excellent system for benchmarking theoretical methods. In this work, we evaluate the performance of many-body perturbation theory within the GW approximation relative to new high-quality CCSD(T) reference data for charged excitations of the acenes. We compare GW calculations with a number of hybrid density functional theory starting points and with eigenvalue self-consistency. Special focus is given to elucidating the trend of GW-predicted excitations with molecule length increasing from benzene to hexacene. We find that GW calculations with starting points based on an optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OTRSH) density functional and eigenvalue self-consistency can yield quantitative ionization potentials for the acenes. However, for larger acenes, the predicted electron affinities can deviate considerably from reference values. Our work paves the way for predictive and cost-effective GW calculations of charged excitations of molecules and identifies certain limitations of current GW methods used in practice for larger molecules.

Ionisation and (de-)protonation energies of gas-phase amino acids from an optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functional

ABSTRACTWe provide a quantitative examination of the ionisation potential, protonation, and de-protonation energies of a set of 22 different amino acids. Specifically, we compare results obtained using the conventional hybrid functionals B3LYP and BHLYP (which use 20% and 50% of Fock exchange, respectively) with those obtained from the recently developed optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OT-RSH) functional approach, as well as to literature coupled-cluster calculations with single and double excitations (CCSD) data. We find the OT-RSH results to be quantitatively close to those of the BHLYP functional and a significant improvement over those of B3LYP, with respect to the CCSD data. We conclude that the results of the OT-RSH for these quantities are as reliable and inexpensive as those of BHLYP, but possess one distinct and important advantage: they overcome the empiricism and limited predictive power associated with the arbitrary choice of the amount of Fock exchange in the BHLYP. We further discuss quantitative and qualitative trends in the optimal-tuning procedure of the amino acids studied.

Tuned range separated hybrid functionals for solvated low bandgap oligomers

The description of charge transfer excitations has long been a challenge to time dependent density functional theory. The recently developed concept of "optimally tuned range separated hybrid (OT-RSH) functionals" has proven to describe charge transfer excitations accurately in many cases. However, describing solvated or embedded systems is yet a challenge. This challenge is not only computational but also conceptual, because the tuning requires identifying a specific orbital, typically the highest occupied one of the molecule under study. For solvated molecules, this orbital may be delocalized over the solvent. We here demonstrate that one way of overcoming this problem is to use a locally projected self-consistent field diagonalization on an absolutely localized molecular orbital expansion. We employ this approach to determine ionization energies and the optical gap of solvated oligothiophenes, i.e., paradigm low gap systems that are of relevance in organic electronics. Dioxane solvent molecules are explicitly represented in our calculations, and the ambiguities of straightforward parameter tuning in solution are elucidated. We show that a consistent estimate of the optimal range separated parameter (ω) at the limit of bulk solvation can be obtained by gradually extending the solvated system. In particular, ω is influenced by the solvent beyond the first coordination sphere. For determining ionization energies, a considerable number of solvent molecules on the first solvation shell must be taken into account. We demonstrate that accurately calculating optical gaps of solvated systems using OT-RSH can be done in three steps: (i) including the chemical environment when determining the range-separation parameter, (ii) taking into account the screening due to the solvent, and (iii) using realistic molecular geometries.

Experimental and theoretical electronic structure of quinacridone

The energy positions of frontier orbitals in organic electronic materials are often studied experimentally by (inverse) photoemission spectroscopy and theoretically within density functional theory. However, standard exchange-correlation functionals often result in too small fundamental gaps, may lead to wrong orbital energy ordering, and do not capture polarization-induced gap renormalization. Here, we examine these issues and a strategy for overcoming them by studying the gas phase and bulk electronic structure of the organic molecule quinacridone (5Q), a promising material with many interesting properties for organic devices. Experimentally, we perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARUPS) on thin films of the crystalline $\beta$-phase of 5Q. Theoretically, we employ an optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid functional (OT-RSH) within density functional theory. For the gas phase molecule, our OT-RSH result for the ionization potential (IP) represents a substantial improvement over the semi-local PBE and the PBE0 hybrid functional results, producing an IP in quantitative agreement with experiment. For the bulk crystal, we take into account the correct screening in the bulk, using the recently developed OT-SRSH approach, while retaining the optimally-tuned parameters for the range-separation and the short-range Fock exchange. This leads to a band gap narrowing due to polarization effects and results in a valence band spectrum in excellent agreement with experimental ARUPS data, with respect to both peak positions and heights. Finally, full-frequency $G_0W_0$ results based on a hybrid functional starting point are shown to agree with the OT-SRSH approach, improving substantially on the PBE-starting point.
