Analysis of THz generation using the tilted-pulse-front geometry in the limit of small pulse energies and beam sizes.

Optical rectification in lithium niobate using the tilted-pulse-front geometry is one of the most commonly used techniques for efficient generation of energetic single-cycle THz pulses and the details of this generation scheme are well understood for high pulse energy driving lasers, such as mJ-class, kHz-repetition rate Ti:Sa amplifier systems. However, as modern Yb-based laser systems with ever increasing repetition rate become available, other excitation regimes become relevant. In particular, the use of more moderate pulse energies (in the few µJ to multi-10 µJ regime), available nowadays by laser systems with MHz repetition rates, have never been thoroughly explored. As increasing the repetition rate of THz sources for spectroscopy becomes more relevant in the community, we present a thorough numerical analysis of this regime using a 2+1-D numerical model. Our work allows us to confirm experimental trends observed in this unusual excitation regime and shows that the conversion efficiency is naturally limited by the small pump beam sizes as a consequence of spatial walk-off between the pump and THz beams. Based on our findings, we discuss strategies to overcome the current limitations, which will pave the way for powerful THz sources approaching the watt level with multi-MHz repetition rates.

High Field Single- to Few-Cycle THz Generation with Lithium Niobate

The transient terahertz (THz) pulse with high peak field has become an important tool for matter manipulation, enabling many applications such as nonlinear spectroscopy, particle acceleration, and high harmonic generation. Among the widely used THz generation techniques, optical rectification in lithium niobate (LN) has emerged as a powerful method to achieve high fields at low THz frequencies, suitable to exploring novel nonlinear phenomena in condensed matter systems. In this review, we focus on introducing single- to few-cycle THz generation in LN, including the basic principles, techniques, latest developments, and current limitations. We will first discuss the phase matching requirements of LN, which leads to Cherenkov-like radiation, and the tilted pulse front (TPF) technique. Emphasis will be put on the TPF technique, which has been shown to improve THz generation efficiency, but still has many limitations. Different geometries used to produce continuous and discrete TPF will be systematically discussed. We summarize the advantages and limitations of current techniques and future trends.

Variable Repetition Rate THz Source for Ultrafast Scanning Tunneling Microscopy.

Broadband THz pulses enable ultrafast electronic transport experiments on the nanoscale by coupling THz electric fields into the devices with antennas, asperities, or scanning probe tips. Here, we design a versatile THz source optimized for driving the highly resistive tunnel junction of a scanning tunneling microscope. The source uses optical rectification in lithium niobate to generate arbitrary THz pulse trains with freely adjustable repetition rates between 0.5 and 41 MHz. These induce subpicosecond voltage transients in the tunnel junction with peak amplitudes between 0.1 and 12 V, achieving a conversion efficiency of 0.4 V/(kV/cm) from far-field THz peak electric field strength to peak junction voltage in the STM. Tunnel currents in the quantum limit of less than one electron per THz pulse are readily detected at multi-MHz repetition rates. The ability to tune between high pulse energy and high signal fidelity makes this THz source design effective for exploration of ultrafast and atomic-scale electron dynamics.

Generation of 0.7 mJ multicycle 15 THz radiation by phase-matched optical rectification in lithium niobate.

We demonstrate efficient multicycle terahertz pulse generation at 14.6 THz from large-area lithium niobate crystals by using high-energy (up to 2 J) femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses. Such terahertz radiation is produced by phase-matched optical rectification in lithium niobate. Experimentally, we achieve maximal terahertz energy of 0.71 mJ with conversion efficiency of ∼0.04%. Our experimental setup is simple and easily upscalable to produce multi-millijoule, multicycle terahertz radiation with proper lithium niobate crystals.

Highly efficient scalable monolithic semiconductor terahertz pulse source

Intense pulses at low terahertz (THz) frequencies of 0.1–2 THz are an enabling tool for constructing compact particle accelerators and for strong-field control of matter. Optical rectification in lithium niobate provided sub-mJ THz pulse energies, but it is challenging to increase it further. Semiconductor sources suffered from low efficiency. Here, a semiconductor (ZnTe) THz source is demonstrated, collinearly pumped at an infrared wavelength beyond the three-photon absorption edge and utilizing a contact grating for tilting the pump-pulse front. Suppression of free-carrier absorption at THz frequencies in this way resulted in 0.3% THz generation efficiency, two orders of magnitude higher than reported previously from ZnTe. Scaling the THz energy to the mJ level is possible simply by increasing the pumped area. This unique THz source with excellent focusability, pumped by novel, efficient infrared sources, opens up new perspectives for THz high-field applications.

Highly efficient terahertz pulse generation by optical rectification in stoichiometric and cryo-cooled congruent lithium niobate

We report, and review in detail, experiments resulting in a record 3.7% optical-to-terahertz (THz) conversion efficiency by optical rectification (OR) in cryogenically cooled congruent lithium niobate (cLN) using a near-optimal 680 fs pump pulse at 1030 nm. In addition, we report a record conversion efficiency of 1.7% at room temperature using stoichiometric lithium niobate (sLN) which results in 21.8 μJ of THz energy from a 1.2 mJ optical pulse. Electro-optical sampling measurements reveal the THz pulses to be single-cycle and centered at 0.45 THz. The experimentally measured efficiency, THz waveform, and THz spectrum are in good agreement with theoretical calculations. Finally, spatial beam profile measurements are also provided. To our knowledge, these results represent an order of magnitude improvement in efficiency of THz generation by OR in lithium niobate over previous results.

Generation of sub-mJ terahertz pulses by optical rectification

Recent theoretical calculations predicted an order-of-magnitude increase in the efficiency of terahertz pulse generation by optical rectification in lithium niobate when 500 fs long pump pulses are used, rather than the commonly used ~100 fs pulses. Even by using longer than optimal pump pulses of 1.3 ps duration, 2.5× higher THz pulse energy (125 μJ) was measured with 2.5× higher pump-to-THz energy conversion efficiency (0.25%) than reported previously with shorter pulses. These results verify the advantage of longer pump pulses and support the expectation that mJ-level THz pulses will be available by cooling the crystal and using large pumped area.

Generation of 30 μJ single-cycle terahertz pulses at 100 Hz repetition rate by optical rectification

We report the generation of 30 microJ single-cycle terahertz pulses at 100 Hz repetition rate by phase-matched optical rectification in lithium niobate using 28 mJ femtosecond laser pulses. The phase-matching condition is achieved by tilting the laser pulse intensity front. Temporal, spectral, and propagation properties of the generated terahertz pulses are presented. In addition, we discuss possibilities for further increasing the energy of single-cycle terahertz pulses obtained by optical rectification.

Terahertz generation in an actively controlled femtosecond enhancement cavity

We report on terahertz generation by Cherenkov-type optical rectification in lithium niobate using an actively controlled femtosecond pumped enhancement cavity. In this way a much higher pump power is available inside the cavity and an increased terahertz output power is obtained. The advantages of terahertz generation in the Cherenkov geometry are verified by comparing it with other types of emitters by means of electro-optical detection as well as by bolometer measurements.
