Development and Evaluation of a Hybrid Measurement System to Determine the Kinematics of the Wrist.

Optical Motion Capture Systems (OMCSs) are considered the gold standard for kinematic measurement of human movements. However, in situations such as measuring wrist kinematics during a hairdressing activity, markers can be obscured, resulting in a loss of data. Other measurement methods based on non-optical data can be considered, such as magneto-inertial measurement units (MIMUs). Their accuracy is generally lower than that of an OMCS. In this context, it may be worth considering a hybrid system [MIMU + OMCS] to take advantage of OMCS accuracy while limiting occultation problems. The aim of this work was (1) to propose a methodology for coupling a low-cost MIMU (BNO055) to an OMCS in order to evaluate wrist kinematics, and then (2) to evaluate the accuracy of this hybrid system [MIMU + OMCS] during a simple hairdressing gesture. During hair cutting gestures, the root mean square error compared with the OMCS was 4.53° (1.45°) for flexion/extension, 5.07° (1.30°) for adduction/abduction, and 3.65° (1.19°) for pronation/supination. During combing gestures, they were significantly higher, but remained below 10°. In conclusion, this system allows for maintaining wrist kinematics in case of the loss of hand markers while preserving an acceptable level of precision (<10°) for ergonomic measurement or entertainment purposes.

Motion Analysis of the Wrist and Finger Joints in Sport Climbing.

Climbing is a fast-growing sport, with one of the most common injuries being a rupture of the finger flexor tendon pulley. The strain on pulleys increases as finger joints flex. However, to our knowledge, no study has conducted a kinematic analysis of climbers' fingers. Thus, this study aimed to examine finger kinematics during typical climbing tasks. Eleven elite climbers performed a sequence of four climbing moves, which were recorded by an optical motion capture system. Participants used crimp, half-crimp, and open-hand grips for three trials each, with the fourth condition involving campusing using any grip except crimp. Mean proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) flexion during the holding phase was 87° (SD 12°), 70° (14°) and 39° (27°) for the crimp, half-crimp and open-hand grip, respectively. Hence, inter-individual PIP flexion ranges overlap between different gripping conditions. Two different movement patterns emerged in the open-hand grip, possibly influenced by the use of the little finger, leading to varying degrees of flexion in the middle and ring fingers. Avoiding little finger usage in the open-hand grip may reduce load during pulley rupture rehabilitation. The implications of PIP joint angle variability on individual pulley injury risk or prevention warrant further investigation. Motion capture proved effective for understanding finger kinematics during climbing and could guide future studies on pulley injury risk factors.

Experimental and computational analysis of elastomer membranes used in oscillating water column WECs

The study investigates the structural characterisation of flexible membranes used in oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converters (WECs). Four commonly utilised elastomers – natural rubber, nitrile rubber, silicone, and latex – were subjected to a novel hyperelastic model selection process. A custom bulge test setup enabled the selection of second-order Mooney-Rivlin (SOMR) and Yeoh models for relevant accuracy (RMSE<0.018 MPa), stability and numerical validation. A 1:20 scale OWC model with latex was tested in a water tank to examine the effects of waves with a frequency range of 0.25–1.4 Hz and up to 0.24m amplitude. Water tank experiments demonstrated smooth frequency responses for OWC with membrane, beneficial for consistent power generation. A dry test rig was designed and built to replicate OWC inflation conditions and apply cyclic loadings up to 1.5 Hz, overcoming pressure limitations of the water tank, exploring wider material options, and validating numerical simulation. An optical motion capture system, Qualisys, supported the validation process by providing precise data on membrane deformation during experiments. Furthermore, finite element analysis (FEA) was utilised to conduct stress analysis and parametric studies, assessing the suitability of these materials for flexible OWC application.

Estimating Compressive and Shear Forces at L5-S1: Exploring the Effects of Load Weight, Asymmetry, and Height Using Optical and Inertial Motion Capture Systems.

This study assesses the agreement of compressive and shear force estimates at the L5-S1 joint using inertial motion capture (IMC) within a musculoskeletal simulation model during manual lifting tasks, compared against a top-down optical motion capture (OMC)-based model. Thirty-six participants completed lifting and lowering tasks while wearing a modified Plug-in Gait marker set for the OMC and a full-body IMC set-up consisting of 17 sensors. The study focused on tasks with variable load weights, lifting heights, and trunk rotation angles. It was found that the IMC system consistently underestimated the compressive forces by an average of 34% (975.16 N) and the shear forces by 30% (291.77 N) compared with the OMC system. A critical observation was the discrepancy in joint angle measurements, particularly in trunk flexion, where the IMC-based model underestimated the angles by 10.92-11.19 degrees on average, with the extremes reaching up to 28 degrees. This underestimation was more pronounced in tasks involving greater flexion, notably impacting the force estimates. Additionally, this study highlights significant differences in the distance from the spine to the box during these tasks. On average, the IMC system showed an 8 cm shorter distance on the X axis and a 12-13 cm shorter distance on the Z axis during lifting and lowering, respectively, indicating a consistent underestimation of the segment length compared with the OMC system. These discrepancies in the joint angles and distances suggest potential limitations of the IMC system's sensor placement and model scaling. The load weight emerged as the most significant factor affecting force estimates, particularly at lower lifting heights, which involved more pronounced flexion movements. This study concludes that while the IMC system offers utility in ergonomic assessments, sensor placement and anthropometric modeling accuracy enhancements are imperative for more reliable force and kinematic estimations in occupational settings.

Inertial Measuring System to Evaluate Gait Parameters and Dynamic Alignments for Lower-Limb Amputation Subjects.

The study aims to construct an inertial measuring system for the application of amputee subjects wearing a prosthesis. A new computation scheme to process inertial data by installing seven wireless inertial sensors on the lower limbs was implemented and validated by comparing it with an optical motion capture system. We applied this system to amputees to verify its performance for gait analysis. The gait parameters are evaluated to objectively assess the amputees' prosthesis-wearing status. The Madgwick algorithm was used in the study to correct the angular velocity deviation using acceleration data and convert it to quaternion. Further, the zero-velocity update method was applied to reconstruct patients' walking trajectories. The combination of computed walking trajectory with pelvic and lower limb joint motion enables sketching the details of motion via a stickman that helps visualize and animate the walk and gait of a test subject. Five participants with above-knee (n = 2) and below-knee (n = 3) amputations were recruited for gait analysis. Kinematic parameters were evaluated during a walking test to assess joint alignment and overall gait characteristics. Our findings support the feasibility of employing simple algorithms to achieve accurate and precise joint angle estimation and gait parameters based on wireless inertial sensor data.

Optimization of Torque-Control Model for Quasi-Direct-Drive Knee Exoskeleton Robots Based on Regression Forecasting.

The choice of torque curve in lower-limb enhanced exoskeleton robots is a key problem in the control of lower-limb exoskeleton robots. As a human-machine coupled system, mapping from sensor data to joint torque is complex and non-linear, making it difficult to accurately model using mathematical tools. In this research study, the knee torque data of an exoskeleton robot climbing up stairs were obtained using an optical motion-capture system and three-dimensional force-measuring tables, and the inertial measurement unit (IMU) data of the lower limbs of the exoskeleton robot were simultaneously collected. Nonlinear approximations can be learned using machine learning methods. In this research study, a multivariate network model combining CNN and LSTM was used for nonlinear regression forecasting, and a knee joint torque-control model was obtained. Due to delays in mechanical transmission, communication, and the bottom controller, the actual torque curve will lag behind the theoretical curve. In order to compensate for these delays, different time shifts of the torque curve were carried out in the model-training stage to produce different control models. The above model was applied to a lightweight knee exoskeleton robot. The performance of the exoskeleton robot was evaluated using surface electromyography (sEMG) experiments, and the effects of different time-shifting parameters on the performance were compared. During testing, the sEMG activity of the rectus femoris (RF) decreased by 20.87%, while the sEMG activity of the vastus medialis (VM) increased by 17.45%. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of this control model in assisting knee joints in climbing up stairs.

Dynamic assessment of spine movement patterns using an RGB-D camera and deep learning

In clinical practice, functional limitations in patients with low back pain are subjectively assessed, potentially leading to misdiagnosis and prolonged pain. This paper proposes an objective deep learning (DL) markerless motion capture system that uses a red–green–blue-depth (RGB-D) camera to measure the kinematics of the spine during flexion–extension (FE) through: 1) the development and validation of a DL semantic segmentation algorithm that segments the back into four anatomical classes and 2) the development and validation of a framework that uses these segmentations to measure spine kinematics during FE. Twenty participants performed ten cycles of FE with drawn-on point markers while being recorded with an RGB-D camera. Five of these participants also performed an additional trial where they were recorded with an optical motion capture (OPT) system. The DL algorithm was trained to segment the back and pelvis into four anatomical classes: upper back, lower back, spine, and pelvis. A kinematic framework was then developed to refine these segmentations into upper spine, lower spine, and pelvis masks, which were used to measure spine kinematics after obtaining 3D global coordinates of the mask corners. The segmentation algorithm achieved high accuracy, and the root mean square error (RMSE) between ground truth and predicted lumbar kinematics was < 4°. When comparing markerless and OPT kinematics, RMSE values were < 6°. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using markerless motion capture to assess FE spine movement in clinical settings. Future work will expand the studied movement directions and test on different demographics.

Sagittal plane knee kinematics can be measured during activities of daily living following total knee arthroplasty with two IMU.

Knee function is rarely measured objectively during functional tasks following total knee arthroplasty. Inertial measurement units (IMU) can measure knee kinematics and range of motion (ROM) during dynamic activities and offer an easy-to-use system for knee function assessment post total knee arthroplasty. However, IMU must be validated against gold standard three-dimensional optical motion capture systems (OMC) across a range of tasks if they are to see widespread uptake. We computed knee rotations and ROM from commercial IMU sensor measurements during walking, squatting, sit-to-stand, stair ascent, and stair descent in 21 patients one-year post total knee arthroplasty using two methods: direct computation using segment orientations (r_IMU), and an IMU-driven iCloud-based interactive lower limb model (m_IMU). This cross-sectional study compared computed knee angles and ROM to a gold-standard OMC and inverse kinematics method using Pearson's correlation coefficient (R) and root-mean-square-differences (RMSD). The r_IMU and m_IMU methods estimated sagittal plane knee angles with excellent correlation (>0.95) compared to OMC for walking, squatting, sit-to-stand, and stair-ascent, and very good correlation (>0.90) for stair descent. For squatting, sit-to-stand, and walking, the mean RMSD for r_IMU and m_IMU compared to OMC were <4 degrees, < 5 degrees, and <6 degrees, respectively but higher for stair ascent and descent (~12 degrees). Frontal and transverse plane knee kinematics estimated using r_IMU and m_IMU showed poor to moderate correlation compared to OMC. There were no differences in ROM measurements during squatting, sit-to-stand, and walking across the two methods. Thus, IMUs can measure sagittal plane knee angles and ROM with high accuracy for a variety of tasks and may be a useful in-clinic tool for objective assessment of knee function following total knee arthroplasty.

Single-Strand “Short Isometric Construct” Medial Collateral Ligament Reconstruction Restores Valgus and Rotational Stability While Isolated Deep MCL and Superficial MCL Reconstruction Do Not

Background: Historical MCL (medial collateral ligament) reconstruction (MCLR) techniques have focused on the superficial MCL (sMCL) to restore valgus stability while frequently ignoring the importance of the deep MCL (dMCL) in controlling tibial external rotation. The recent recognition of the medial ligament complex importance has multiple studies revisiting medial anatomy and questioning contemporary MCLR techniques. Purpose: To assess whether (1) an isolated sMCL reconstruction (sMCLR), (2) an isolated dMCL reconstruction (dMCLR), or (3) a novel single-strand short isometric construct (SIC) would restore translational and rotational stability to a knee with a dMCL and sMCL injury. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Biomechanical testing was performed on 14 fresh-frozen cadaveric knee specimens using a custom multiaxial knee activity simulator. The specimens were divided into 2 groups. The first group was tested in 4 states: intact, after sectioning the sMCL and dMCL, isolated sMCLR, and isolated dMCLR. The second group was tested in 3 states: intact, after sectioning the sMCL and dMCL, and after single-strand SIC reconstruction (SICR). In each state, 4 loading conditions were applied at 0°, 20°, 40°, 60°, and 90° of knee flexion: 8-N·m valgus torque, 5-N·m external rotation torque, 90-N anterior drawer, and combined 90-N anterior drawer plus 5-N·m tibial external rotation torque. Anterior translation, valgus rotation, and external rotation of the knee were measured for each state and loading condition using an optical motion capture system. Results: sMCL and dMCL transection resulted in increased laxity for all loading conditions at all flexion angles. Isolated dMCLR restored external rotation stability to intact levels throughout all degrees of flexion, yet valgus stability was restored only at 0° of flexion. Isolated sMCLR restored valgus and external rotation stability at 0°, 20°, and 40° of flexion but not at 60° or 90° of flexion. Single-strand SICR restored valgus and external rotation stability at all flexion angles. In the combined anterior drawer plus external rotation test, isolated dMCL and single-strand SICR restored stability to the intact level at all flexion angles, while the isolated sMCL restored stability at 20° and 40° of flexion but not at 60° or 90° of flexion. Conclusion: In the cadaveric model, single-strand SICR restored valgus and rotational stability throughout the range of motion. dMCLR restored rotational stability to the knee throughout the range of motion but did not restore valgus stability. Isolated sMCLR restored external rotation and valgus stability in early flexion. Clinical Relevance: In patients with anteromedial rotatory instability in the knee, neither an sMCLR nor a dMCLR is sufficient to restore stability.

Characteristics of throwing arm movement for an elongated implement: a comparison of the javelin and baseball throwing.

In javelin, although many previous studies have examined throwing movements that can increase initial velocity, the characteristics of throwing arm movement an elongated implement have not been clarified. The purpose of the present study was to examine the characteristics of the throwing movement of an elongated implement by comparing throwing movement between a javelin and baseball. Twelve male javelin throwers were asked to perform a javelin throw (JT) and a baseball long toss (LT) twice. The three-dimensional coordinates of reflective markers attached to the athlete's body, javelin, and baseball were measured using an optical motion capture system. %Trajectory was used as an index to evaluate the degree to which the hand was moved linearly during the throw. A smaller value of this indicator meant that the hand was move closer to a straight line. The joint angles in the throwing arm were obtained by calculating the Euler angles between body segments. These data were used to compare JT and LT. %Trajectory showed that JT was significantly smaller than LT. Significant differences in the joint angles of the throwing arm were noted between JT and LT. JT showed a kinematic pattern in which the hand was moved more linearly than in baseball long toss.

Movement patterns during gait initiation in older adults with various stages of frailty: a biomechanical analysis

BackgroundGait initiation is challenging for older individuals with poor physical function, particularly for those with frailty. Frailty is a geriatric syndrome associated with increased risk of illness, falls, and functional decline. This study examines whether spatial and temporal parameters of gait initiation differ between groups of older adults with different levels of frailty, and whether fear of falling, and balance ability are correlated with the height of lifting the food during gait initiation.MethodsSixty-one individuals aged > 65 years, classified by Fried frailty phenotype, performed five self-paced gait initiation trials. Data was collected using a three-dimensional passive optical motion capture system, consisting of 10 cameras with the ability to perceive reflective markers, and two force plates. The total duration of gait initiation and the duration of its four sub-phases, the first step length, and the maximum foot clearance during the first step were derived, and compared statistically between groups. Additionally, an association analysis was conducted between foot clearance and fear of falling, and confidence in balance in older individuals.ResultsFrail individuals had significantly longer unloading durations, and total durations of gait initiation compared to non-frail older adults. Additionally, they had shorter first step lengths compared to non-frail older adults. Pre-frail older adults also showed shorter steps compared to the non-frail group. However, there were no significant differences between groups for the maximum foot clearance during the first step. Nevertheless, the maximum foot clearance of older individuals correlated significantly with their fear of falling and confidence in balance.ConclusionOlder adults with reduced physical function and signs of frailty mainly display longer duration of gait initiation and decreased first step length compared to non-frail older adults. The release phase is decreased as the double support phase is prolonged in frail patients. This information can guide the development of specialized exercise programs to improve mobility in this challenging motion between static and dynamic balance.

Correlation analysis between biomechanical characteristics of taekwondo double roundhouse kick and effective scoring of electronic body protector.

Objective: To explore the inherent relationship between lower limb biomechanical indicators and effective scoring values of double roundhouse kick (DRK) by taekwondo athletes, and to find key biomechanical factors that trigger effective scoring. Methods: Using the DAEDO Protector and Scoring System (PSS) in conjunction with the Vicon optical motion capture system and Kistler 3D force plate, kinematic and dynamic indicators of the front kicking motion were obtained from 12 professional taekwondo athletes (18.00 ± 2.20years, 182.15 ± 8.62cm and 70.00 ± 14.82kg). The correlation between kinematics, dynamics, and scoring values was initially analyzed using bivariate linear correlation. Subsequently, based on the results of the linear correlation analysis, a stepwise regression analysis was performed to establish a stepwise regression equation. Results: The results reveal that during the First Hit, there is a significant positive correlation (r > 0, p < 0.05) between peak hip flexion angular velocity of the dominant leg, knee abduction angle, and peak foot horizontal plane linear velocity of the non-dominant leg with effective score. On the other hand, peak ankle flexion angular velocity of the non-dominant leg, peak foot sagittal plane linear velocity, peak hip abduction angle, and peak hip flexion angle of the dominant leg exhibit a significant negative correlation (r < 0, p < 0.05) with effective score. These correlations hold statistical significance (DW> 1.023). During the Second Hit, there is a significant positive correlation (r > 0, p < 0.05) between peak ankle internal rotation angular velocity of the dominant leg, foot coronal plane linear velocity, hip adduction angular velocity, and peak ankle internal rotation moment of the non-dominant leg with effective score. Conversely, peak hip flexion angle of the dominant leg shows a significant negative correlation (r < 0, p < 0.05) with effective score. All these variables have a statistically significant impact on effective score (DW > 1.023). Conclusion: Explosive power, body posture, adequate terminal velocity, and body rotation have an association with effective scoring of the electronic protector. The peak angular velocity of the ankle joint of the dominant leg and the peak linear velocity of the foot horizontal plane of the non-dominant leg significantly contribute to the effectiveness score of the electronic protector.

Effect of screen configuration on the neck angle, muscle activity, and simulator sickness symptoms in virtual reality.

There is a lack of information about the optimal setup of multiple screen configurations in virtual reality (VR) office work. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different screen configurations on neck flexion, rotation, neck muscle activity, and simulator sickness symptoms during Virtual Reality (VR) office work. Twelve participants (7 males; 21 to 27 years old) performed copy-paste and drag-drop tasks in three different screen configurations (single screen, primary-secondary screen, and double screen) in a randomized order. Optical motion capture system, electromyography (EMG) device, and simulator sickness questionnaire (SSQ) were used to measure the users' responses. Neck rotation angles, muscle activities, and VR sickness were significantly affected by the screen configurations (p < 0.021). The primary-secondary screen showed the highest right rotation angle (median: -33.47°) and left sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle activities (median: 12.57% MVC). Both single (median: 22.42) and primary-secondary (median: 22.40) screen showed the highest value of SSQ. The screen configurations in VR could be an important design factor affecting the users' physical demands of the neck and VR sickness symptoms. Asymmetric neck rotations caused by the primary-secondary screen conditions should be avoided.

Investigating concurrent validity of inertial sensors to evaluate multiplanar spine movement

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer a portable and inexpensive alternative to traditional optical motion capture systems, and have potential to support clinical diagnosis and treatment of low back pain; however, due to a lack of confidence regarding the validity of IMU-derived metrics, their uptake and acceptance remain a challenge. The objective of this work was to assess the concurrent validity of the Xsens DOT IMUs for tracking multiplanar spine movement, and to evaluate concurrent validity and reliability for estimating clinically relevant metrics relative to gold-standard optical motion capture equipment. Ten healthy controls performed spine range of motion (ROM) tasks, while data were simultaneously tracked from IMUs and optical marker clusters placed over the C7, T12, and S1 vertebrae. Root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC2,1) were calculated to assess validity and reliability of absolute (abs; C7, T12, and S1 sensors) and relative joint (rel; intersegmental thoracic, lumbar, and total) motion. Overall RMSEabs = 1.33°, MAEabs = 0.74° ± 0.69, and ICC2,1,abs = 0.953 across all movements, sensors, and planes. Results were slightly better for uniplanar movements when evaluating the primary rotation axis (prim) absolute ROM (MAEabs,prim = 0.56° ± 0.49; ICC2,1,abs,prim = 0.999). Similarly, when evaluating relative intersegmental motion, overall RMSErel = 2.39°, MAErel = 1.10° ± 0.96, and ICC2,1,rel = 0.950, and relative primary rotation axis achieved MAErel,prim = 0.87° ± 0.77, and ICC2,1,rel,prim = 0.994. Findings from this study suggest that these IMUs can be considered valid for tracking multiplanar spine movement, and may be used to objectively assess spine movement and neuromuscular control in clinics.

Reform and Innovation of Dance Teaching and Aesthetic Education in Colleges and Universities in the Digital Media Era

Abstract Today, when quality education is increasingly emphasized, it is necessary to strengthen the strength of dance aesthetics education for students in colleges and universities. This paper establishes a PBL teaching mode for dance aesthetic education based on the PBL teaching method and designs a teaching experiment for this teaching mode. In the PBL teaching process, the optical motion capture system is used to obtain the three-dimensional data of dance movements. After processing the three-dimensional data through data conversion and normalization, the time and channel refinement fusion hypergraph convolutional network is introduced to identify the dance movements, which helps teachers to carry out the teaching of dance movements. The data were quantitatively analyzed for the effects of dance movement recognition, students’ dance skill level, state of mind, and aesthetic awareness on the effectiveness of dance movement recognition and dance aesthetic PBL teaching model. The results showed that the accuracy of the dance movement recognition model in ballet movement recognition reached 89.63%, the dance skill level of students in the experimental class increased by 7.51±0.05 points compared with that of the control class, and their aesthetic sense, aesthetic appreciation, and aesthetic creativity all showed very significant differences at the 1% level. Applying the PBL teaching method to dance teaching and aesthetic education can fully cultivate students’ aesthetic sense and promote the innovative integration of dance aesthetic education in colleges and universities.

Three-dimensional motion analysis of pre- and postoperative thumb movement in trapeziometacarpal joint osteoarthritis-Comparison of arthrodesis and trapeziectomy with suspensionplasty.

Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis (TMC-OA) reduces the range of motion (ROM) of the thumb. However, the kinematic change achieved through surgical treatment remains unclear. Therefore, to quantify the kinematic change following TMC-OA surgery, we performed a three-dimensional motion analysis of the thumb using an optical motion capture system preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively in 23 patients with TMC-OA scheduled for arthrodesis (AD) or trapeziectomy with suspensionplasty (TS). Eighteen hands of nine healthy volunteers were also included as controls. Both procedures improved postoperative pain and Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand scores, and AD increased pinch strength. The ROM of the base of the thumb was preserved in AD, which was thought to be due to the appearance of compensatory movements of adjacent joints even if the ROM of the TMC joint was lost. TS did not improve ROM. Quantifying thumb kinematic changes following TMC-OA surgery can improve our understanding of TMC-OA treatment and help select surgical procedures and postoperative assessment.

Foot Clearance Prediction using Wrist Acceleration and Gait Speed

Elderly individuals experience fall accidents due to tripping because recognizing foot clearance during walking is difficult for them. To prevent fall accidents, foot clearance should be measured and informed in daily life. Foot clearance is commonly measured using vision-based systems, such as optical motion capture systems. However, problem of these vision-based systems is that these systems cannot measure foot clearance in daily life because they have limitations due to obstacles and field of view. Based on this problem, we developed a wearable fall prevention system using smart devices, such as smartphones and smartwatches. This study aimed to evaluate the proposed prediction method for foot clearance using sensor data obtained from wearable smart devices which can be used in daily life. The proposed method will contribute to measure foot clearance in daily life. This method predicts foot clearance from wrist acceleration and gait speed using a machine learning-based regression model. The proposed method was tested in a computational simulation with a public gait dataset obtained using an optical motion capture system. The results showed that the correlations between the predicted and actual foot clearance were at least 0.65. In conclusion, this study indicates the possibility that the proposed method can be used to measure foot clearance and thus can be used in wearable fall prevention systems.

Concurrent Validity of Cervical Movement Tests Using VR Technology-Taking the Lab to the Clinic.

Reduced cervical range of motion (ROM) and movement velocity are often seen in people with neck pain. Objective assessment of movement characteristics is important to identify dysfunction, to inform tailored interventions, and for the evaluation of the treatment effect. The purpose of this study was to investigate the concurrent validity of a newly developed VR technology for the assessment of cervical ROM and movement velocity. VR technology was compared against a gold-standard three-dimensional optical motion capture system. Consequently, 20 people, 13 without and 7 with neck pain, participated in this quantitative cross-sectional study. ROM was assessed according to right/left rotation, flexion, extension, right/left lateral flexion, and four diagonal directions. Velocity was assessed according to fast cervical rotation to the right and left. The correlations between VR and the optical system for cervical ROM and velocity were excellent, with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) values > 0.95. The mean biases between VR and the optical system were ≤ 2.1° for the ROM variables, <12°/s for maximum velocity, and ≤3.0°/s for mean velocity. In conclusion, VR is a useful assessment device for ROM and velocity measurements with clinically acceptable biases. It is a feasible tool for the objective measurement of cervical kinematics in the clinic.

Validation of an algorithm to assess regular and irregular gait using inertial sensors in healthy and stroke individuals.

Studies using inertial measurement units (IMUs) for gait assessment have shown promising results regarding accuracy of gait event detection and spatiotemporal parameters. However, performance of such algorithms is challenged in irregular walking patterns, such as in individuals with gait deficits. Based on the literature, we developed an algorithm to detect initial contact (IC) and terminal contact (TC) and calculate spatiotemporal gait parameters. We evaluated the validity of this algorithm for regular and irregular gait patterns against a 3D optical motion capture system (OMCS). Twenty healthy participants (aged 59±12 years) and 10 people in the chronic phase after stroke (aged 61±11 years) were equipped with 4 IMUs: on both feet, sternum and lower back (MTw Awinda, Xsens) and 26 reflective makers. Participants walked on an instrumented treadmill for 2 minutes (i) with their preferred stride lengths and (ii) once with irregular stride lengths (±20% deviation) induced by light projected stepping stones. Accuracy of the algorithm was evaluated on stride-by-stride agreement of IC, TC, stride time, length and velocity with OMCS. Bland-Altman-like plots were made for the spatiotemporal parameters, while differences in detection of IC and TC time instances were shown in histogram plots. Performance of the algorithm was compared between regular and irregular gait with a linear mixed model. This was done by comparing the performance in healthy participants in the regular vs irregular walking condition, and by comparing the agreement in healthy participants with stroke participants in the regular walking condition. For each condition at least 1,500 strides were included for analysis. Compared to OMCS, IMU-based IC detection in both groups and condition was on average 9-17 (SD ranging from 7 to 35) ms, while IMU-based TC was on average 15-24 (SD ranging from 12 to 35) ms earlier. When comparing regular and irregular gait in healthy participants, the difference between methods was 2.5 ms higher for IC, 3.4 ms lower for TC, 0.3 cm lower for stride length, and 0.4 cm/s higher for stride velocity in the irregular walking condition. No difference was found on stride time. When comparing the differences between methods between healthy and stroke participants, the difference between methods was 7.6 ms lower for IC, 3.8 cm lower for stride length, and 3.4 cm/s lower for stride velocity in stroke participants. No differences were found on differences between methods on TC detection and stride time between stroke and healthy participants. Small irrelevant differences were found on gait event detection and spatiotemporal parameters due to irregular walking by imposing irregular stride lengths or pathological (stroke) gait. Furthermore, IMUs seem equally good compared to OMCS to assess gait variability based on stride time, but less accurate based on stride length.

Measuring System for Synchronous Recording of Kinematic and Force Data during Handover Action of Human Dyads.

Handover actions are joint actions between two people in which an object is handed over from a giver to a receiver. This necessitates precise coordination and synchronization of both the reach and grasp kinematics and the scaling of grip forces of the actors during the interaction. For this purpose, a measurement object is presented that records the grip forces of both actors on the instrument and allows synchronous measurement of the kinematic data of both actors and the position and orientation of the instrument in space using an optical motion capture system. Additionally, the object allows one to alter its weight in a covert fashion so that it cannot be anticipated by the actors. It is shown that the four phases of a handover, (1) reach and grasp, (2) object transport, (3) object transfer, and (4) end of handover, can be clearly identified with the described measurement system. This allows the user to measure movement kinematics and grip forces during the individual phases with high precision and therefore systematically investigate handover actions. Using exemplary data, we demonstrate in this study how movement kinematics and grip forces during a handover depend on the characteristics of the object to be measured (i.e., its size or weight).
