Nonprofits' external stakeholder engagement and collaboration for innovation: A typology and comparative analysis

AbstractNonprofit organizations (NPOs) increasingly consider how to engage external stakeholders, such as clients and partners, in their efforts to adapt to the fast‐changing and highly competitive environment through innovation. Although the existing literature offers evidence that stakeholder engagement can help promote organizational innovation, much of the discussion focuses on top‐down strategies of stakeholder identification and management. Drawing on in‐depth interviews with executive directors from 38 different NPOs, we developed a typology of stakeholder engagement to capture the repertoire of approaches grounded in data including: targeted feedback seeking, intentional exploration, engineered empowerment, and emergent engagement. Findings demonstrate how these four approaches contributed to NPO innovation and were related to NPO leaders' beliefs. This typology's inclusion of the emergent engagement approach suggests that external stakeholders can drive NPO innovation not only by participating in organizationally planned top‐down processes but also by offering unsolicited inputs proactively when they recognize the need or opportunity for new services or collaborative partnerships. Other conceptual implications and practical suggestions are discussed.

Systematic Literature Review Implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) in Smart City Development

Internet of Things (IoT) "The smart city concept has become a dream that big cities in Indonesia want to achieve, basically the smart city concept focuses on developing the human element using technology. IoT opens up many opportunities for new services by connecting the physical world and the virtual world to various electronic devices. IoT aims to leverage cutting-edge technology to support sustainable services for governments and their citizens. Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is one method in conducting an overview of previous interrelated researchers. The purpose of the literature study in this research is to understand trending research topics, methods, and architecture in the development of smart cities with IoT. In this study, various interesting information was found in various research journals regarding the role of IoT in building a smart city that has a role to serve smart city infrastructure, identify and analyze trends, develop smart cities and become innovations for IoT. Based on the research, there are things that need to be done to improve the study to focus more on the role of IoT that can be more utilized. IoT is also one of the technologies that are widely used in several countries in the development of IoT in the future. IoT in smart cities will become an inseparable technology because humans will increasingly depend on IoT in their daily lives

The new generation library: the role of the library as an social institute in the information age

This study focuses on the place and role of the library in the public life of the information space. Attention is paid to the main means of communication and information in the information society, and shows the need to modernize library networks in new information institutions where everyone can find everything they need.
 The aim is to research and characterize libraries and their importance in the new information space, to outline the development of the library as an institution in the information age and at a time when communication tools of all spheres in Ukraine are provided by Internet resources, not libraries. It also covers the main task of a modern library, which aims not only to teach how to use the library, but also to analyze the book. Explained areas of widespread use of Internet technologies and the creation of electronic libraries, electronic delivery of documents, online catalogs. 
 About remote registration of users, remote ordering of documents and renewal of subscription, access to the electronic form, etc. Extensive use of electronic media, new opportunities for services and information transfer. Creating blogs that are used to inform about cultural, artistic and educational projects, events, etc.; on improving the information culture of users, where they provide answers to bibliographic queries; use multimedia services — to create virtual tours, a range of tasks that can be solved by the library thanks to Internet technologies of various galleries, educational video courses, video lectures, video conferencing, etc. It is explained what is new in the work of libraries and librarians, what is its effect and what is the benefit of it, what are the benefits of social networks when using them in the work of librarians. The article explains that the main task of a modern library is only to provide information services, but also to teach the user to conduct proper information analysis and draw conclusions.

Outsourcing scheme of ABE encryption secure against malicious adversary

Integrated broadcast-broadband services allow viewers to simultaneously receive broadcast content over the airwaves and additional information related to the content over the Internet. This integration provides opportunities for new services to be tailored and offered to individual viewers. Viewing histories provide a rich variety of data for service providers to learn the preferences of individual viewers and fine-tune their offerings. Each person’s viewing history, however, is privacy-sensitive data and may reveal information that the viewer does not want revealed. In this paper, we propose a system that allows viewers to specify a policy that they would like to be applied to their viewing history, when shared with service providers, by using attribute-based encryption (ABE). A ciphertext is associated with a policy, and it can be decrypted only by service providers who conform to the policy. To reduce the computations of the user terminal, we develop a system with provable security that allows the encryption to be outsourced to a cloud server, without the need to trust the cloud server. To the best of our knowledge, our construction gives the first outsourcing scheme of ABE encryption that is secure against a malicious cloud server. Although our solution is described for integrated broadcast-broadband services, the architecture and results could also be used for sharing viewing histories of OTT (Over-The-Top) services such as Netflix and location histories of mobile services. We implemented our scheme and showed that it significantly reduces the computation cost of a user terminal: about one third that of the Waters’ ABE scheme.

An investigation of interference coordination in heterogeneous network for LTE-Advanced systems

The novel "femtocell" in Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) for LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) set-up will allow Malaysian wireless telecommunication operators (Maxis, Celcom, Digi, U-Mobile, P1, YTL and etc2.) to extend connectivity coverage where access would otherwise be limited or unavailable, particularly indoors of large building complexes. A femtocell is a small-sized cellular base station that encompasses all the functionality of a typical station. It therefore allows a simpler and self-contained deployment including private residences. For the Malaysian service providers, the main attractions of femtocell usage are the improvements to both coverage and capacity. The operators can provide a better service to end-users in turn reduce much of the agitations and complaints. There will be opportunity for new services at reduced cost. In addition, the operator not only benefits from the improved capacity and coverage but also can reduce both capital expenditure and operating expense i.e. alternative to brand new base station or macrocell installation. Interference is a key issue associated with femtocell development. There are a large number of issues associated with interference all of which need to be investigated, identified, quantified and solved. This is to ensure that the deployment of any femtocells will take place successfully. Among the most critical challenges in femtocell deployment is the interference between femtocell-to-macrocell and femtocell-to-femtocell in HetNets. In this paper, all proposed methods and algorithms will be investigated in the OFDMA femtocell system considering HetNet scenarios for LTE-A.

A Librarian by Any Other Name: The Role of the Informationist on a Clinical Research Team

In 2012, the Lamar Soutter Library (LSL), University of Massachusetts Medical School, successfully collaborated with two principal investigators at UMMS, as well as their research team, to receive a supplemental grant from the National Library of Medicine. The award, an “NLM Administrative Supplements for Informationist Services in NIH-funded Research Projects”, was one of eight awarded nationally. It provides funding to support an informationist, or in-context information specialist, who serves the research team by offering expertise in the areas of data and information management. For 18 months, the informationist is serving as a member of the research team on the grant, “Promoting Breast Cancer Screening in Non-Adherent Women” (R01 CA-132935, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health), working to develop data management tools, providing an in-depth literature review and report on the issues facing researchers and internet technology professionals when building and implementing research tools, assisting with a systematic review on the effectiveness of telephone intervention protocols for preventive screenings, and instructing the members of the team in advanced searching techniques and bibliographic management. This role serves as a new model of embedded librarianship for the LSL. It also provides opportunities for new services from the Library in the role of data and information management. Further, the acceptance of an informationist into a well-funded research team demonstrates a level of commitment by researchers to receiving research support from the Library that it has not experienced to date. This brief paper describes the study and the accomplishments to date.

Threats and opportunities for new audiovisual cultural heritage archive services: The Dutch case

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the business-to-consumer market for digital audiovisual archiving services. In doing so we identify drivers, threats, and opportunities for new services based on audiovisual archives in the cultural heritage domain. By analyzing the market we provide insights into the preconditions for provision of fruitful and viable services that can be build upon these archives. Design/methodology/approach The research method takes the form of a case study, including literature search and interviews. For this research we adopt the STOF-framework for analyzing purposes. This framework consists of four components: a service component, a technological component, an organizational component, and a financial component (STOF). Findings The authors argue an imbalance between the different factors of the STOF-model in the Netherlands. First, the service domain in the Dutch audiovisual archive domain shows little knowledge about (potential) users and their needs regarding the archive. The service domain is therefore probably the biggest question mark in this market. Second, the technical component presents few impedances and is therefore least of an issue. Third, the organization component in terms of value network presents issues revolving around the nature of the cultural institution. Non-profit cultural organizations like Sound & Vision in the Netherlands are not naturally inclined towards business modeling around development of services. Fourth and last, the financial domain shows severe bottlenecks for unlocking the content regarding intellectual property. The clearing of copyrights is one of the main tasks of Images for the Future, but engulfs much time in the primary process. In sum, the study shows promising and problematic issues that arise in the field of developing audiovisual archive services. Research limitations/implications This is a one-case study, so no cross analysis with other cases was possible. Future work includes the investigation of user needs regarding audiovisual cultural heritage and possible services upon the archives. Originality/value This is one of the first studies that look into the factors in a particular domain that influence the viability of services by using a business model framework. This paper, therefore, extends the utilization of this framework (STOF-model) as it used as a method for the evaluation of a market and provides market insights. Also, the application on the audiovisual cultural heritage domain is quite novel. For practitioners regarding the development of audiovisual archive services the paper presents fresh insights in the configuration of the different business components of the services.

Improving the Security of Downloadable Java Applications With Static Analysis

Today, most middle-end mobile phones embed a Java runtime environment that can execute programs downloaded on the network by the user. This new functionality creates great opportunities for new services but also brings the full range of risks that existed on the personal computer to the phone.Telecommunication operators are the last warrant of the quality of the software downloaded by their customers and might sign the applications they trust. Unfortunately they have little evidence to check the quality of the contents of the jammed bytecode they receive from developers. The traditional evaluation process relies mostly on the manual testing of the software on actual terminals. But this is not adapted for security properties.MATOS (Midlet Analysis TOol Suite) is a static analysis tool that checks the possible values passed to some identified methods directly on the compiled application. It is used by the test teams of the mobile operator Orange to check what kind of connections are opened by MIDP applications. We will present the security requirements we want to check, how MATOS helps to ensure them and how the necessary analysis are performed using a combination of (rather) well-known analysis techniques.
