Key Elements of the Inter-professional Education (IPE): Perceptions amongst Pre-Registration Students in the Different Health Professions in Sri Lanka

Aims: Inter-professional education (IPE) is important in developing good working relationships between different health professionals. The key elements of IPE have entitled as clinical situations, skills expected in IPE and teaching / learning methods. Health professional students in Sri Lanka experience informal inter-professional learning opportunities during clinical years. The aim of this research was to explore student perceptions on these key elements of IPE.
 Study Design: A cross sectional study.
 Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted with the students who have had prior clinical training for a period of 1 year, from 8 health professional groups (Medical, Physiotherapy, Nursing Diploma, Nursing Degree, Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy, Audiology, Speech & Language Therapy) at different health educational institutions.
 Methodology: A total of 686 students were invited to complete a self-administered questionnaire. The data was entered and analyzed using SPSS. The part of the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The response rate for the survey was 84.8%.
 Results: The findings suggest that the key elements of IPE are important to improve the aims of IPE. Most health care students agree that management of an acute situation, community based care and rehabilitative care are the most important clinical situations where students can learn to work as a team, one of the main aims of inter-professional learning. Respect for each other and communication skills were identified as the most imperative skills that can be improved through interprofessional learning. Most students strongly agree that demonstration and work based tasks in wards are key teaching methods for achieving the aims of IPE.
 Conclusion: This study suggests some focused approaches for IPE in Sri Lanka and students may need more clarity on the aim of IPE.

Robust Interprofessional Clinical Education and Practice to Improve Health Equity

The purpose of this paper is to highlight innovative interprofessional clinical learning opportunities at a Nurse-led Mobile Health Clinic (MHC) that prepares nursing students and allied health students to care for diverse populations with a focus on screening for the social determinants of health (SDOH) and acting on positive screens. Our Nurse-led MHC provides free health screenings in partnership with food pantries and crisis ministries in urban and rural areas. We also provide self-management support classes for those with hypertension and/or diabetes.

Certified Nurse-Midwives as Teachers: Expanding Interprofessional Collaboration Learning Opportunities for Medical Students on the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship.

Interprofessional experiences provide critical exposure to collaborative health care teams, yet medical students often lack this experience during clinical clerkships. We created a labor and delivery triage rotation exclusively staffed by certified nurse-midwives in the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship to address this gap. We sought to evaluate the clinical learning experiences of medical students rotating on this midwife-supervised collaborative team. Between 2018 and 2020, we electronically sent all medical students an evaluation after each required clerkship. Our primary outcome was the quality of teaching score, as defined by level of agreement on a 5-point Likert scale with a statement regarding teaching quality. A secondary outcome evaluated scores from the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Obstetrics and Gynecology subject examination taken by all students at the end of the rotation. Evaluations and assessments were compared between students rotating on labor and delivery triage and those who did not. Evaluation comments from students rotating on labor and delivery triage were collated to identify common themes. Of 374 students, 370 (98.9%) completed the end-of-clerkship course evaluation and 312 (83.4%) completed teaching evaluations. Sixty-seven students (17.9%) rotated in labor and delivery triage; of these, 52 (77.6%) completed both the course and triage rotation evaluations. There were no differences in the mean quality of teaching scores (3.9 ± 1.2 versus 3.8 ± 1.2, p = 0.54) or in NBME Obstetrics and Gynecology subject examination scores between students rotating in labor and delivery triage compared to all other rotations (79.9% ± 7.2% vs 80.2% ± 7.8%, P = 0.436). Comments from teaching evaluations highlighted student exposure to the midwifery philosophy of care model. This work demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of this midwife-led authentic interprofessional collaborative experience for medical students. This model can serve as an example of how to implement and evaluate interprofessional collaboration experiences in the clinical setting.

Impact of a Grand Rounds Interprofessional Workshop: student perceptions of interprofessional socialization and cultural humility

ABSTRACT While uniprofessional education programs develop strong student identities, they may limit the development of behaviors needed for interprofessional socialization. Interprofessional education (IPE) creates an essential platform for student engagement in the development of interprofessional socialization and cultural humility, thus enabling improvement in collaborative communication. In this quasi-experimental observational study, health professional students attended one of three Grand Rounds Interprofessional Workshops (GRIW) and completed online pre- and post-workshop surveys including sociodemographic background, the Interprofessional Socialization and Valuing Scale (ISVS), and the Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Checklist (CCSAC). A total of 394 students from eight professions participated in the workshop with 287 (73%) of attendees completing both pre- and post-workshop surveys. No significant differences were observed in ISVS and CCSAC scores between students across workshops. Significant pre- to post-workshop differences were found in ISVS [t (284) = 13.5, p < .001, 95%], CCSAC [t (286) = 13.8, p < .001] and the cultural competence components of cultural awareness [t (285) = 12.9, p < .001, 95%], knowledge [t (285) = 9.5, p < .001, 95%], and skills [t (286) = 13.3, p < .001, 95%]. Interprofessional education learning opportunities that integrate socialization with health professional students and cultural humility education can improve educational awareness of cultural values and communication for collaborative professional practice.

A106‘FY1 for a day’ an immersive programme to prepare final year medical students for foundation training

Final year medical students are often anxious about commencing foundation training and feel underprepared for the practical responsibilities they are expected to conduct independently [1]. Consequently, a full day programme was created to facilitate immersive simulation of a typical working day of a Foundation Year 1 (FY1) doctor. Aim: To provide an enriching programme empowering final year medical students to experience the practical aspects of foundation training (including areas of expressed difficulty), whilst creating a safe and realistic learning environment and providing opportunities for interprofessional learning and near-peer teaching. Junior doctors from FY1s to Medical Registrars delivered the programme’s content. In the morning, three interprofessional simulation scenarios were delivered to the medical students and included nursing students for added realism. Each scenario reflected common ward-based and acute-setting situations that had minimal coverage in their undergraduate curricula. Afternoon stations were created to attenuate the medical students’ anxieties about the aspects of foundation training they perceived as difficult. Using a simulated ward, a mock handover was conducted. Students were then expected to complete the tasks of death verification, complex prescribing and female catheterization. The other stations simulated interpreting blood results, discussions with a microbiologist and requesting and discussing radiological imaging. During completion of all stations, the medical students carried and answered a bleep mimicking realistic distractions. Morning and afternoon debriefing occurred in small groups. Following programme completion, all the medical students ( ‘FY1 for a day’ is an effective and sustainable educational programme to potently prepare final year medical students for their foundation training whilst safeguarding psychological safety and fortifying multidisciplinary relationships. Authors confirm that all relevant ethical standards for research conduct and dissemination have been met. The submitting author confirms that relevant ethical approval was granted, if applicable.

Implementing a primary care simulation to improve interprofessional competencies

Learners from six health professions programs (athletic training, nursing, optometry, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, and physical therapy) participated in a telehealth primary care simulation. The learners’ purpose of the simulated visit was to evaluate and manage a patient experiencing complications of type 2 diabetes, including vision changes, frequent falls, and a foot wound. ObjectivesThe objectives of the activity were to: 1) assess changes in perceived interprofessional abilities in the areas of communication, collaboration, roles and responsibilities, patient/family-centered care, conflict management and resolution, and team functioning, and 2) assess learner perceptions regarding the value of the interprofessional primary care simulation. ActivityLearners were divided into teams with 1–2 learners from each program (8–9 total learners per team) and each team interacted face-to-face in small individual classrooms. Trained faculty served as simulation facilitators in each classroom. Each team conducted a two-phase videoconference encounter with a trained standardized patient and family member. Between the two phases, each team conducted an interprofessional care planning session. Learner evaluation of the exercise used two validated tools, the revised Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICCAS-R), and the modified Simulation Effectiveness Tool (SET-M) to inform the faculty. FindingsPaired t-test values on all 20 items of the ICCAS-R indicated statistically significant results (p < .001), and SET-M results indicated that over 88 % of learners strongly agreed or somewhat agreed with questions pertaining to their satisfaction with the activity. Findings from this activity can be used by other educational institutions to develop a primary care simulation based on the health professions available, thus enhancing interprofessional learning opportunities and overcoming a common barrier of limited clinical sites for interprofessional practice.

FINCA - a conceptual framework to improve interprofessional collaboration in health education and care.

The health care system in Germany and in many other countries is facing fundamental challenges due to demographic change, which require new integrated care concepts and a revision of the collaboration between health care professions in everyday clinical practice. Internationally, several competency framework models have been proposed, but a framework that explicitly conceptualizes collaborative activities to improve interprofessional problem-solving competency in health care is still missing. Such a framework should define contextual, person-related, process-related, and outcome-related variables relevant to interprofessional problem solving in health care. Against this background, we present a conceptual framework to improve interprofessional collaboration in health education and care (FINCA) developed with scientific consideration of empirical data and various theoretical references. FINCA reflects an interprofessional learning and interaction process involving two persons from different health care professions and with different individual learning prerequisites. These two initially identify a problem that is likely to require interprofessional collaboration at some point. FINCA acknowledges the context of interprofessional learning, teaching, and working as well as its action-modifying context factors. We follow the reasoning that individual learning prerequisites interact with the teaching context during learning activities. At the heart of FINCA are observable collaborative activities (information sharing and grounding; negotiating; regulating; executing interprofessional activities; maintaining communication) that can be used to assess individuals' cognitive and social skills. Eventually, the framework envisages an assessment of the outcomes of interprofessional education and collaboration. The proposed conceptual framework provides the basis for analysis and empirical testing of the components and variables it describes and their interactions across studies, educational interventions, and action-modifying contexts. FINCA further provides the basis for fostering the teaching and learning of interprofessional problem-solving skills in various health care settings. It can support faculty and curriculum developers to systematize the implementation and improvement of interprofessional teaching and learning opportunities. From a practical perspective, FINCA can help to better align curricula for different health professions in the future. In principle, we also see potential for transferability of the framework to other areas where different professions collaborate.

Student nurses as a future general practice nursing workforce. Implementing collaborative learning in practice: implications for placement learning and patient access. A mixed methods study

BackgroundThere is a global shortage of nurses, with particularly acute shortfall in General Practice Nursing in the United Kingdom estimated at as high as 50% vacancy rate by 2031 by some sources. There has previously been reluctance for General Practices to host student nurses on placement, but it has become imperative to increase placement capacity if practices are to be able to recruit a future workforce. Collaborative Learning in Practice is a means of organising placement learning for student nurses using a coaching model, that allows for leadership development, peer support and earlier engagement in patient care, and increases placement capacity.MethodsThis was a mixed methods study using qualitative data from focus groups to evaluate the implementation of Collaborative Learning in Practice, and routinely collected audit data on numbers of clinic appointments to investigate the potential impact an increased capacity of student nurses might have on patient access to services. The aims of this study were: to implement and evaluate Collaborative Learning in Practice in General Practice Nursing settings; to explore issues of interprofessional learning; to explore patient access to services related to increased student nurse capacity.ResultsOur qualitative data indicated the following themes as important to students and staff: Peer Support; Interprofessional Learning; and the Importance of ‘own clinics’ for students to see patients. The audit data indicated that having students leading their own clinics increased the clinic numbers available by approximately 20% compared to when students were not in placement.ConclusionsThis study shows that student nurses increased clinic capacity and improved access for patients. Students valued their placement, felt that they were more ‘part of the team’ than in other placements and consequently had a greater sense of belonging. This was multifaceted, coming in part from the welcoming practice staff, in part from the opportunities for peer support engendered by the collaborative learning in practice model, and in part from the interprofessional learning opportunities available. General Practice Nursing placements for students are important for future workforce recruitment and can help meet Quality and Outcomes Framework targets for General Practices.

Perceptions towards Inter-Professional Education (IPE) among Pre-Registration Health Professional Students in Sri Lanka

Introduction of Inter-Professional Education (IPE) into healthcare professions’ curricula has become an important aim globally. Health professional students experience informal interprofessional learning opportunities during their clinical training years. Investigating the attitudes toward IPE and the factors that affect these attitudes among pre-registration students in the different health professions will illuminate the needs and challenges of IPE in Sri Lanka. A cross sectional study was conducted with the students from 8 health professional groups (Medicine, Physiotherapy, Nursing Diploma/ Degree, Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Pharmacy, Audiology, Speech and Language Therapy) at different health educational institutions. A total of 686 students were invited to complete the self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire mainly consists of the Readiness for Inter-Professional Learning Scale (RIPLS). The RIPLS data was analyzed using factor analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. The response rate for the survey was 83%. Only 18.9% of the students reported previous IPE experiences. We sought a three-factor solution but the analysis highlighted that a single factor predominates. According to the 14 items which loaded to this factor, it was named as ‘value of teamwork’. The findings suggest that students’ attitudes towards IPE are generally positive. The variable factor loading than the original validation suggests that students may need more clarity on the aim of IPE. This study suggests some focused approaches for IPE in Sri Lanka. Promoting the importance of interprofessional learning through educational methods might assist to improve the attitudes toward IPE.

The resident experience with psychological safety during interprofessional critical event debriefings.

Interprofessional feedback and teamwork skills training are important in graduate medical education. Critical event debriefing is a unique interprofessional team training opportunity in the emergency department. While potentially educational, these varied, high-stakes events can threaten psychological safety for learners. This is a qualitative study of emergency medicine resident physicians' experience of interprofessional feedback during critical event debriefing to characterize factors that impact their psychological safety. The authors conduced semistructured interviews with resident physicians who were the physician team leader during a critical event debriefing. Interviews were coded and themes were generated using a general inductive approach and concepts from social ecological theory. Eight residents were interviewed. The findings suggest that cultivating a safe learning environment for residents during debriefings involves the following: (1) allowing space for validating statements, (2) supporting strong interprofessional relationships, (3) providing structured opportunities for interprofessional learning, (4) encouraging attendings to model vulnerability, (5) standardizing the process of debriefing, (6) rejecting unprofessional behavior, and (7) creating the time and space for the process in the workplace. Given the numerous intrapersonal, interpersonal, and institutional factors at play, educators should be sensitive to times when a resident cannot engage due to unaddressed threats to their psychological safety. Educators can address these threats in real time and over the course of a resident's training to enhance psychological safety and the potential educational impact of critical event debriefing.

‘Not the last resort’: The impact of an interprofessional training care home initiative on students, staff, and residents

ABSTRACT This paper reports on an innovative interprofessional education (IPE) initiative conducted in three care homes across Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom (UK). Students from a variety of professions including nursing, physiotherapy, social work, podiatry, counseling, and sports rehabilitation worked collaboratively in the homes to address the residents’ individual goals. We found that care homes provided students with many opportunities for interprofessional working and learning. Through better understanding the dimensions of different perspectives and approaches, students improved their education and transformed their perceptions of aged care. Having a diverse range of professionals allowed staff to gain insight into the latest evidence-based practice and address the multiple needs of the residents more holistically. Residents gained an enriched sense of meaning and purpose in their daily life by engaging in fulfilling and meaningful activities. The complexities of undertaking an IPE initiative in this setting are also considered and we conclude by proposing important avenues for future research.

CHANGING AGING MYTHS AND READINESS FOR INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION IN FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER STUDENTS

Abstract The preparation of Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students caring for the older adult population is inadequate. The design was a quasi-experimental pilot study (N = 30) to assess change in myths about aging and readiness for interprofessional education (IPE) in FNP students near graduation. The Woolf Aging Quiz (WAQ) containing 24 true-false myths about older adults, and the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) containing 19 items rated on a 5-point Likert scale (high score indicates more readiness), were completed at baseline and post-intervention. The intervention consisted of 4-weeks of education on normal aging, agism, age friendly healthcare, and IPE using online weekly brief video presentations and peer discussion. Thirty FNP students, mean age 43.5 years, 80.6% (N = 25) female, 19.4% (N = 6) male. A paired t-test showed no significant pre-post difference in the WAQ (t = -1.388, p &amp;lt; .05). McNemar crosstab analysis of the WAQ items indicated 14 aging myths where students chose the wrong answer pre and post intervention. In addition, the RIPLS showed no significant change (t = .793, p &amp;lt; .05) from pre-intervention (mean = 35.87) to post-intervention (mean = 34.42). FNP students near graduation held strong ageist beliefs, reflected in the WAQ, and were unprepared for IPE. Both of these results were resistant to change. The data suggests that FNP programs need to address aging and IPE content earlier and provide students with exposure to older adults that addresses myths about aging affords both theoretical and practical opportunities for interprofessional learning.

Introspective Learning From Interprofessional Virtual Grand Rounds.

Interprofessional collaboration in health care settings improves patient safety and outcomes, yet collaboration among health professionals requires specific competencies and skills. Providing nursing students with interprofessional learning experiences with multiple health professions is possible yet challenging. Opportunities for effective online interprofessional learning are lacking. This article explores nursing students' reflections on how an interprofessional learning experience, Virtual Grand Rounds (VGRs), influenced their personal development and provided meaningful learning that they can use in their practices as professional nurses. Thematic analysis was done on the open-ended questions in students' final reflection assignment. Analysis of student reflections identified 5 learning themes including the value of teamwork and collaboration, the importance of communication skills, professional identity, plans to engage diverse health professions, and the desire for future learning. Student reflections indicate the VGR was an effective method for nursing students to experience collaboration with multiple health professions without disrupting curriculums.

Implementation of interprofessional learning in hospital practice.

Some universities of applied science struggle with implementing interprofessional learning due to a lack of diversity in professions. The aim of this study was to investigate whether an interprofessional learning model with an informational letter describing interprofessional learning opportunities can provide nursing students in rural areas with sufficient interprofessional learning during internships. This qualitative study utilized a hermeneutical approach. A total of 17 individuals participated in focus groups, group interviews and written responses. The data collection: January 2019. Four categories were observed: (a) assumptions about interprofessional learning, (b) available interprofessional learning opportunities, (c) hindrances to interprofessional learning and (d) stimulation of interprofessional learning. The conclusion was that interprofessional learning can be implemented to some extent in areas where different professions work, even when only one student is present. A focus on interprofessional collaboration, patient safety and patient flow are valuable interprofessional learning objectives. An informational letter with suggestions for interprofessional learning, such as shadowing, was considered valuable by the participants.

Dosage Form Modification, a Simulation Activity between Nursing and Pharmacy Students.

Background: The aim of this exploratory pilot study was to evaluate student perceptions of a simulation activity involving undergraduate nursing and pharmacy students. The key question was "how do nursing and pharmacy students respond in an immersive collaborative simulation activity which involves medication dosage form modification?" Methods: One hundred nursing students participated in a simulated exercise where patients required medications for which there were barriers to administration. Fourteen pharmacy students were also present in the simulated health environment, observing the work of the nursing students and being available to provide advice regarding medication administration to the nursing students. A mixed methods approach was employed for this exploratory pilot study, where both nursing and pharmacy students were invited to complete a survey regarding the experience at the end of the simulation exercise and pharmacy students completed a reflection. Both surveys and reflections were analyzed. Results: Survey results indicated very high satisfaction regarding the exercise for both pharmacy and nursing students. Analysis of pharmacy student reflections also indicated apprehension regarding their preparedness to contribute to the exercise, enjoyment in participation, their understanding of the value of collaboration between the two groups of students, and also recognition of their need to be more prepared for such situations. Conclusion: This study assessed student perceptions and did not formally evaluate learning outcomes. The interprofessional immersive simulated learning opportunity was viewed as valuable by both nursing and pharmacy students. The immersive simulation provided teaching staff with the opportunity to develop a new approach for the teaching of dosage form modification to both nursing and pharmacy students in an interprofessional setting.

A case study: Promoting interprofessional community-based learning opportunities for health sciences students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa

&#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D; Background. Preventing disease and promoting health call for interprofessional collaboration of health professionals working in a team, making it important for student health professionals to experience collaborative teamwork while in training, rather than learning and working in silos. Objectives. To describe the opinions of participating students and supervising staff in an intraprofessional community-based initiative involving the disciplines of physiotherapy and dentistry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Durban, South Africa.&#x0D; Methods. This was a qualitative descriptive study demonstrating teamwork of students from two health sciences disciplines, giving a joint health education talk to patients at a local community health centre. Data were collected from focus group discussions. Three such discussions were held with purposively selected samples: (i) 5 physiotherapy students; (ii) 6 dental therapy students; and (iii) 6 staff members from both disciplines who supervised the students. These data were analysed using thematic analysis. Ethical approval was obtained from UKZN.&#x0D; Results. By working collaboratively, the students believed that they learnt more about the other health professionals and obtained a deeper understanding of their roles within the healthcare team. Staff believed that the collaborative project could break down professional barriers to work cohesively in the work environment. The main difficulties encountered were the language barrier and rigid timetables.&#x0D; Conclusion. This case study provides an example of intraprofessional collaboration and teamwork, capable of positively influencing participating students, emphasising the need for interprofessional learning opportunities for students across all health sciences disciplines while in training.&#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D;

Building telehealth teams of the future through Interprofessional curriculum development: a five-year mixed methodology study

ABSTRACT Building the next generation of telehealth enabled professionals requires a mixture of team-based, interprofessional practice with novel technologies that connect providers and patients. Effective telehealth education is critical for the development of multidisciplinary training curricula to ensure workforce preparedness. In this study, we evaluated the impact of a formal telehealth education curriculum for interprofessional students through an online elective. Over 12 semesters, 170 students self-selected to enroll in the 3-credit hour interprofessional elective and took part in structured didactic, experiential and interprofessional learning opportunities. Mixed-method assessments show significant knowledge and confidence gains with students reflecting on their roles as future healthcare providers. The results from five years’ worth of course data shows not only an opportunity to advance the individual knowledge of trainees, but a larger movement to facilitate changes in practice toward population health goals. Recent global health events have further highlighted the need for a rapid response to public health emergencies by highly trained provider teams who are able to utilize technology as the cornerstone for the continuity of care.

The Value of Interprofessional Learning Through Patient Simulation in Developing Interprofessional Relationships: Medical Students’ Perspectives

ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the value of interprofessional learning in developing interprofessional relationships, as perceived by medical students participating as simulated patients for chiropractic students. MethodsA cross-sectional study of university medical students, using an online survey and interview sessions, was conducted at the International Medical University, Malaysia, from July 2020 to October 2020. Only students who had previously participated as a simulated patient within a chiropractic examination setting were included; this involved interacting with chiropractic students in observed structured clinical examinations, including history taking, physical examination or motion palpation, and adjustment setups for end-of-semester examinations. Survey responses focused on themes of interprofessional learning, with values of reduction of prejudice, increase in understanding, and improved collaborative attitude. These responses were grouped as positive, neutral, or negative based on Likert scores. Interview responses were analyzed and categorized according to the survey themes. ResultsFifteen male medical students aged 23 to 26 years completed the questionnaire and interview. Respondents perceived that their experience helped clarify doubts on the scope of chiropractic (66.7%), the role of a chiropractor (80%), and chiropractic professional practices (80%). A majority of respondents (80%) felt that being a simulated patient increased their willingness to learn collaboratively with chiropractic students. Most (93.3%) responded positively to being more willing to work with other health care professionals. ConclusionThis study showed an overall positive perception among medical students of developing interprofessional relationships with chiropractors and other health care professionals. The results suggest that opportunities for interprofessional learning between chiropractic and other health care programs may assist with the long-term goal of promoting patient-centered care.

An Interprofessional Team-Based Experiential Learning Experience in Public Libraries

The Stony Brook Medicine Healthy Libraries Program (HeLP) is an interprofessional team-based experiential learning opportunity for health professional students. University faculty members in the fields of nursing, public health, social work, and library science collaborated with four suburban public library directors to design, implement, and evaluate a team-based interprofessional service-learning experience, in which supervised students engaged in health monitoring and promotion in the library setting. Participating students were enrolled in either a semester-long population health course ( n = 16), a Master of Social Work fieldwork internship ( n = 2), a Master of Library Science internship ( n = 1), or a Master of Public Health practicum ( n = 2). HeLP faculty educated students on content, library culture, communication, professional roles/responsibilities, and documentation using standardized data collection tools. Concurrently, the interprofessional student teams delivered resources to patrons 1 day a week, with alternating locations, for a minimum of 2 hours per visit over the course of 6 weeks. HeLP provided students with an opportunity to apply core competencies based on the Interprofessional Education Collaborative. The team-based approach fostered interprofessional learning, as students worked together to assist library patrons on health and social needs. Throughout the program’s duration, students documented the type of resources provided, the types of encounters between team members, and the number of referrals. Student learning was assessed after program completion using three open-ended reflection questions.
