(Cyclopentadienone)iron Complexes: Synthesis, Mechanism and Applications in Organic Synthesis.

(Cyclopentadienone)iron tricarbonyl complexes are catalytically active, inexpensive, easily accessible and air-stable that are extensively studied as an active pre-catalyst in homogeneous catalysis. Its versatile catalytic activity arises exclusively due to the presence of a non-innocent ligand, which can trigger its unique redox properties effectively. These complexes have been employed widely in (transfer)hydrogenation (e. g., reduction of polar multiple bonds, Oppenauer-type oxidation of alcohols), C-C and C-N bond formation (e. g., reductive aminations, α-alkylation of ketones) and other synthetic transformations. In this review, we discuss the remarkable advancement of its various synthetic applications along with synthesis and mechanistic studies, until February 2021.

Catalyst Activation with Cp*RhIII/IrIII–1,2,3-Triazole-Based Organochalcogen Ligand Complexes: Transfer Hydrogenation via Loss of Cp* andN-MethylmorpholineN-Oxide Based vs Oppenauer-Type Oxidation

The reactions of 1-benzyl-4-((phenylthio/phenylseleno)methyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole (L1/L2) and 4-phenyl-1-((phenylthio/phenylseleno)methyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole (L3/L4), synthesized using the click reaction, with [(η5-Cp*)RhCl(μ-Cl)]2 and [(η5-Cp*)IrCl(μ-Cl)]2 at room temperature followed by treatment with NH4PF6 result in complexes of the type [[(η5-Cp*)M(L)Cl] (1–8). Their HR-MS and 1H, 13C{1H}, and 77Se{1H} NMR spectra have been found characteristic. The single-crystal structures of 2, 3, and 6 have been established by X-ray crystallography. There is a pseudo-octahedral “piano-stool” disposition of donor atoms around Rh/Ir. In 1, 2, 5, and 6 N(3) of the triazole skeleton coordinates with Rh/Ir, whereas in the other four complexes the nitrogen involved is N(2). These complexes have been explored as catalysts for N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMO) based and Oppenauer-type oxidation of alcohols and transfer hydrogenation (TH) of carbonyl compounds with 2-propanol. Oppenauer type oxidation is somewhat slower than that based on NMO. The homogeneous nature of TH is supported by a poisoning test. The catalytic processes are more efficient with Rh complexes than the corresponding Ir complexes. The complexes having N(2) coordinated with the metal have shown better activity than those in which N(3) is involved in ligation. The reactivity with respect to ligands is in the order Se > S. In TH the species formed with loss of Cp* appears to be involved in catalysis with Rh as well as Ir complexes. Such a loss is noticed in the case of Rh for the first time. Generally results of DFT calculations are consistent with the experimental results.

Cp*Ir Complex-Catalyzed Hydrogen Transfer Reactions Directed toward Environmentally Benign Organic Synthesis

Catalytic activity of Cp*Ir complexes toward hydrogen transfer reactions are discussed. Three different types of reactions have been developed. The first is Oppenauer-type oxidation of alcohols. This reaction proceeds under quite mild conditions (room temperature in acetone) catalyzed by [Cp*IrCl2]2/K2CO3, and both primary and secondary alcohols can be used as substrates. Introduction of a N-heterocyclic carbene ligand to the catalyst considerably enhances the catalytic activity, and a very high turnover number of 950 has been obtained in the oxidation of 1-phenylethanol. The ­second is the N-alkylation of amines with alcohols. A new effective catalytic system consisting of [Cp*IrCl2]2/K2CO3 for the N-alkylation of primary amines with alcohols has been developed. Synthesis of indoles and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines via intramolecular N-alkylation of amino alcohols and synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles via intermolecular N-alkylation of primary amines with diols catalyzed by a Cp*Ir complex have been also achieved. The third is the regio- and chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of quinolines. An efficient method for the transfer hydrogenation of quinolines catalyzed by [Cp*IrCl2]2/HClO4 using 2-propanol as a hydrogen source has been realized. A variety of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives can be synthesized by this method. These results show that Cp*Ir complexes can be useful catalysts for hydrogen transfer ­reactions from the viewpoint of developing environmentally benign organic synthesis.
