Simplified V/f Control Algorithm for Reduction of Current Fluctuations in Variable-Speed Operation of Induction Motors

This paper introduces a straightforward control strategy aimed at the reduction of current fluctuations within the low-frequency domain of open-loop V/f control in induction motor drives. Traditional control techniques necessitate the addition of a current compensator based on motor parameters and the use of digital filters such as band-pass or high-pass filters. These methods, however, rely on precise motor parameters and involve complex filter design and implementation. The proposed control is capable of suppressing current fluctuations without controlling the slip of the induction motor. The proposed control strategy generates the forced rotation angle and command input voltage using the V/f block and outputs the d-axis voltage using a proportional integral controller to keep the d-axis current constant at zero. The difference between the command input voltage and the d-axis voltage is applied as the q-axis voltage and then applied through SVPWM. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control, the proposed control is implemented and analyzed using power simulation based on the results of the analysis of the causes of current fluctuations in the induction motor. Finally, the effect of suppressing current fluctuations of the induction motor is verified through experimental results. In the 10~19 Hz range, where the conventional V/f control method resulted in current fluctuation rates exceeding 10% and peaking at 113.3% at 13 Hz, the proposed method suppressed the fluctuation rate to below 8.6% across all frequencies. This paper validates the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy through these results.

Hybrid poisson-lagrange approach based on genetic algorithm for improving performance of induction motor

ABSTRACT This article presents an intelligent approach for controlling the mechanical parameters like speed, rotor position, and torque of an induction motor. These parameters have poor performance in terms of settling time, rise time, peak overshoot, and voltage deviation. To conquer such an issue, a hybrid Poisson-Lagrange (HPL) algorithm is proposed. This algorithm is a combination of Poisson distribution and the Lagrange multiplier. It begins with the mathematical modeling of a three-phase induction motor. A multi-objective function is framed with the help of the HPL algorithm. Further, unknown variables of the multi-objective function are trained with a genetic algorithm (GA), which is coined the HPL-GA algorithm. Similar types of control for mechanical parameters are also analyzed with fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) and field-oriented controllers (FOC). It is observed that peak overshoot, rise time, settling time of speed and torque, and sensitivity are found to be minimum with HPL-GA in comparison to FLC and FOC for various loading conditions. The voltage deviation is also found to be lowest with HPL-GA with respect to others for various loading conditions and thus such an approach makes the system highly efficient and robust.

A non-invasive technique for monitoring supply voltage variation to single phase induction motor using doppler UWB radar signal analysis

The induction motors (IMs) are important components of various industries. The condition of IMs monitored continuously using contact and non-contact methods continuously. The contact methods are expensive, complex and difficult to implement. This paper proposes a non-contact method of fault identification in the single-phase induction motor operating in different conditions by analyzing doppler ultra-wide band (UWB) radar signal. The UWB radar generates a high frequency signal, which is transmitted on to the Induction motor form transmitter and software phase locked loop (SPLL) condition received signal from the receiver. The PLL implements as low pass filter, receives reflected signal from an induction motor along with high frequency noise. The received signal filtered to remove the high frequency noise and filtered output is analyzed to identify the different faults such as over voltage faults and under voltage faults when the motor is running with high, medium and low speed. The proposed non-invasive method has advantages compared to other such as the sensor’s sensitivity will not affect with motor temperature and accuracy will not change with position of the sensor and presence of other machines.

An Assessment and Performance of Voltage Source Inverter Feed Induction Motor Drive

By varying stator terminal voltage from voltage source inverter. The model are PWM system use to vary voltage and frequency. PWM-Inverter fed 3-phase Induction Motor, and the Torque was found to be constant for various rotor speeds. PWM-Inverter fed 3- phase Induction Motor. It was observed that using a Closed-Loop scheme with a Proportional Controller gave a very superior way of controlling the speed of an Induction motor while maintaining a constant maximum torque. Simulation results are obtained using MATLAB/SIMULINK environment for the effectiveness of the study.

In the electrical energy conversion laboratory, the stable operation of the induction motor is one of the most important factors. Failure of induction motor operation can be fatal in research activities in energy conversion laboratories. Prevention is needed so that the performance of induction motors remains optimal. this paper was created as an alternative for laboratory users of electrical energy conversion in maintaining the performance of induction motors. Based on a survey conducted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the main cause of electric motor operation failure is generally caused by insulation failure, so electric motor testing is generally dominated by insulation testing. Many insulation testing methods such as Insulation Resistance (IR) testing, Polarization Index (PI), Delta tangent, and other tests. In this paper, IR-based testing is proposed, because it is relatively cheap and easy to implement. The IR testing process is carried out using direct voltage from the Insulation Tester to the sample to be tested using the IEEE 43TM-2013 Standard. The test results show the IR value of the sample motor is good. This condition is categorized as safe to operate, so research activities that use induction motors can run well and safely.

Realization of ultracapacitor as sole energy storage device in induction motor drive electric vehicle with modified state timing based field weakening control algorithm

This article employs the concept of realizing an electric vehicle (EV) driven by an induction motor (IM) with an ultracapacitor (UC) as a sole energy storage device for a short distance range in city drive. In battery-driven EVs, the performance of batteries will extensively degrade during frequent start, stop, acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle. However, UC can withstand that circumstance without any degradation. High charge/discharge efficiency, high power density, high temperature withstand capabilities and quick charging capability allows UC to run the EV for an extended range, including the regenerative braking technique. Apart from source, EVs also require efficient drive control for a smooth vehicle operation in the entire driving range. To achieve the vehicle characteristics, it is preferred to operate the propulsion drive in the field weakening (FW) region over the constant torque region. This paper also proposes a Modified State Timing SVPWM Based Control Algorithm for the FW region operation of IM for EV applications. The proposed algorithm is designed to overcome the torque ripple issue of the conventional SVPWM Based Control Algorithm in the FW region. The reduction in torque ripple is achieved by imposing current and voltage limits on the motor d and q axis by considering a maximum modulation index of 1.2732 and with an additional current loop for mitigating the transients in the torque due to sudden variation of the load. The simulation/hardware studies show a smooth operation of UC-driven EV for an entire driving range with a 78.57 percent improvement in torque ripple in the FW region by the proposed algorithm compared with the conventional FW control algorithm. The real time Lab prototype of UC driven EV has been developed and the proposed algorithm has been validated in real-time using the STM32F407VGTx ARM Cortex M4 microcontroller.

The research conducted focuses on analyzing the harmonic effects resulting from the operation of a three-phase induction motor in a single-phase power system and examining changes in harmonic values due to load variations using two capacitors. This study is a continuation of previous research, which only addressed the influence of a single capacitor on a three-phase induction motor in a single-phase power system, without further exploration of the extent of harmonic impact on the motor. The induction motor operates based on the principle of magnetic induction. This investigation employs a single-phase induction motor with lower power capacity compared to a three-phase induction motor. Three-phase induction motors have a small starting torque, preventing them from starting under full load. The study involves increasing the starting torque of the three-phase induction motor and operating it in a single-phase electrical power system using capacitors to improve power factor during the starting process while analyzing its harmonic effects. The research findings indicate that as the load on the motor increases, both the motor speed and harmonic current values decrease. This is evident when there is no load, and the motor speed is 1475 rpm; adding a load does not exceed this speed. The motor speed decreases as the load increases, while the presence of harmonic current values is due to the linear load, such as incandescent light bulbs. The study is conducted by enhancing the starting torque of the three-phase induction motor, imposing a significant load. The motor demonstrates more optimal and stable performance with the new method compared to the old method. Additionally, the harmonic current values with the new method are lower than those with the old method.

Effectiveness of Field Oriented Control and Direct Torque Control Methods for Induction Motor Speed Regulation

Induction motors are used extensively in many sectors, including manufacturing, power generation, healthcare, and transportation. Robust speed regulation of inductor motors is a key requirement for ensuring their intended usage and increasing their effectiveness. This study analyzes two advanced and popular methods for regulating the torque and speed of induction motors, namely, field-oriented control (FOC) and direct torque control (DTC). Detailed mathematical modeling of both methods is described, providing the in-depth perspective of the control algorithms and problem variables. This is followed by a thorough analysis of the performance of the control methods. Different control scenarios have been analyzed using simulation with MATLAB Simulink under different speed and loading conditions. The outcomes show that FOC provides better performance in terms of reduced torque jitter, smooth torque, and speed tracking response for highly variable load and reference speed profiles. Further, the FOC is found to generate better current waveforms. This leads to improving the power factor, decreasing electrical noise, and enhancing the motor performance. Meanwhile, the DTC demonstrates a strong capability to handle large speed changes and provide faster torque response, but it suffers from considerable torque variation. The simulation outcomes also suggest that the method selected to tune PI controllers is effective. The findings contribute to enhancing the efficient operation of induction motors and fostering their applications in diverse sectors for improved productivity and service, and superior economic gain.

Implementation of Indirect Field Oriented Control Using Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation for the Control of Induction Motor

For the efficient speed control of three phase Induction motor, the Vector control or Field oriented control (FOC) technique is used for the Voltage source inverter. In implementing FOC the angular position of the rotor flux vector is to be determined. There are two methods (direct and indirect) of vector control for the evaluation of rotor angle. In an Indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) method rotor angle is estimated from slip frequency and rotor frequency without using a sensor (sensors are used in direct FOC) which are achieved in a synchronously rotating frame. IFOC produces high performance in induction motor drives by decoupling rotor flux and torque, so it can be separately controlled by stator direct-axis current and quadrature-axis current respectively, like in a DC motor. The rotor flux orientation method is used for incorporating PI control system using the Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) technique. The Induction motor drive control generally involves three different PI controllers for torque, speed, and flux respectively. Through the simulation result, varying the load torque, and reference speed is achieved within a few milliseconds, and the behavior of the separately excited DC motor is observed.

A Comparative Study on the Performance of the Induction Motor with Fuzzy-Based Power Converters

This study investigates the influence of load conditions on grid voltage stability and the performance of a proposed compensator, encompassing a 1.5 hp 4-pole induction motor (IM) exposed to grid voltage disturbances. Through rigorous grid current analysis, our research demonstrates the effective mitigation of total harmonic distortion (THD) without necessitating passive filters. The comprehensive study covers multiple facets, including control strategy optimization, fine-tuning of control parameters, component ratings, output voltage analysis, operating principles, pulse width modulation, and the integral role of the fuzzy logic controller. Specifically, it underscores the significant impact of a Predictive Torque Control-based Diode Clamped Inverter in enhancing the dynamic and steady-state performance of the IM. The research delves into traditional PTC control methods and advanced techniques, such as fuzzy and evolutionary control, addressing the persistent challenge of reducing torque ripple under varying load conditions. By implementing model prediction control-based DCI, our method achieves rapid torque response without compromising the motor’s stator characteristics. Utilizing MATLAB’s environmental package, we thoroughly evaluate motor performance across diverse scenarios, encompassing stable, and rapid load changes. Despite inherent winding impedance challenges, our proposed approach consistently delivers satisfactory output responses, contributing to a more efficient, and resilient IM performance under diverse operating conditions.

EXPRESS METHOD OF DETERMINING INSTANT CHARACTERISTICS OF ASYNCHRONOUS ELECTRIC MOTORS

A current trend during the last decade is the growing importance of automated electric drives that use asynchronous electric motors. This is due to the development of theoretical methods for modeling their work with high accuracy and a decrease in the cost of power semiconductor technology, which contributed to improving the efficiency and reducing the cost of such systems. This trend has led to the expansion of induction motors not only in traditional electric drive systems with easy starting conditions, but also in traction systems and systems with large starting torques that normally used DC motors. However, this has also led to technical challenges in the design and operation of induction motors due to their particular mechanical characteristics, which have a slightly lower starting torque value. This disadvantage can be eliminated by increasing the motor power in the design, but this can lead to a decrease in efficiency and an increase in the cost of the electric drive. Therefore, it is important to conduct further research to improve the starting characteristics of induction motors. With this in mind, asynchronous motors remain the most common electric machines used in various industries. Their use in industry is growing, and their applications are constantly expanding. The development of express methods for determining torque characteristics, which will allow to reduce the complexity of determining the starting torques of asynchronous motors, is an urgent task that is of great importance in practice. This article offers an express method for determining the torque characteristics of asynchronous electric motors, which helps to significantly reduce the complexity of testing such machines. A general mathematical model for controlling the torque characteristics of electric machines has also been developed, which makes it possible to unambiguously establish the dependence of the starting torque of an asynchronous motor on the angular position of the rotor on the basis of data obtained during experiments.

Simulation and experimental validation of chaotic-billiards optimization algorithm for advanced variable speed drive

AbstractTo appropriately construct the proportional–integral control strategy for stability enhancement of the speed performance of induction motors and current waveform, this study describes a novel optimization approach for three-phase induction motor pumps speed drive. This work provides a novel chaotic-billiards optimizer (C-BO) method. These strategies were implemented in the same hardware with modifications in the control algorithm. Both simulation and experimental investigation are carried out, and a comparative analysis of the optimized parameters is presented. The system setup is prepared and simulated in the environment of MATLAB/Simulink. The same system has been presented experimentally. The laboratory experiment is carried out in the Smart Systems Co laboratory using simulators of induction motors designed and manufactured by the Lucas-Nuelle company. The asynchronous motor is controlled by 3 phase variable speed drive A1000 of Yaskawa Co. The "ActiveServo" software included ensures user-friendly operation and visualization of the measurement values. Experiment has validated the speed the effectiveness of C-BO. The speed control and flux control using C-BO have a fast response even under pump load and improvement in rising time by 41.65% as compared to GA. The novel optimization model C-BO has improvement in integral square error (ISE) of the three controllers by 38.91% as compared to genetic algorithm systems. Furthermore, the difficulty of developing both systems is the same. The C-BO algorithm stands out for its uncomplicated design, low requirement for design specifications, high rate of convergence, and minimal computational strain.

Space Harmonics Effects on Performances of Linear Induction Motors: Modelization and Characterization

This article presents the impact analysis of space harmonics’ presence on a single-sided three-phase linear induction motor, along with a comprehensive parametric investigation. The presence of space harmonics often reduces the linear induction motor’s performance. The electromagnetic phenomena are governed by Maxwell’s equations. The chosen mathematical model uses a 2D formulation with magnetic vector potential. The model implementation is performed using the finite element method on the free Gmsh-GetDP platform. The electromagnetic thrust is calculated in the current excitation case using two numerical models of the finite element method with and without term-generating space harmonics in order to highlight their effect. The adaptation to voltage supply operation is obtained via equivalent electric circuits through the calculation of the operational impedance. The choice of the machine’s parameters by the designer in order to enhance its performance or reduce energy consumption is a difficult task. The analysis and the determination of the dependence of the parameters and the performance are necessary. The main objectives of this study are to determine this dependency and to analyze the space harmonic impact of the linear induction motor’s parameters on its performances. A comparative exploration of space harmonics’ presence using two numerical models (single and multiharmonics) and an assessment of the parametric effect of space harmonics’ presence on various machine characteristics such as thrust, efficiency, and power factor have been carried out. The motor’s characteristics (i.e., thrust, efficiency, and power factor) strongly depend on parameters such as the pole pair number and conductivity. Improving the operation and maximizing the performance of such a machine for a given specification requires the use of optimization algorithms. Motor characteristics (thrust, efficiency, and power factor) are highly dependent on parameters such as the number of pole pairs and conductivity.
