MnO2 superstructure cathode with boosted zinc ion intercalation for aqueous zinc ion batteries

The simultaneous intercalation of protons and Zn2+ ions in aqueous electrolytes presents a significant obstacle to the widespread adoption of aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) for large-scale use, a challenge that has yet to be overcome. To address this, we have developed a MnO2/tetramethylammonium (TMA) superstructure with an enlarged interlayer spacing, designed specifically to control H+/Zn2+ co-intercalation in AZIBs. Within this superstructure, the pre-intercalated TMA+ ions work as spacers to stabilize the layered structure of MnO2 cathodes and expand the interlayer spacing substantially by 28 % to 0.92 nm. Evidence from in operando pH measurements, in operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that the enlarged interlayer spacing facilitates the diffusion and intercalation of Zn2+ ions (which have a large ionic radius) into the MnO2 cathodes. This spacing also helps suppress the competing H+ intercalation and the formation of detrimental Zn4(OH)6SO4·5H2O, thereby enhancing the structural stability of MnO2. As a result, enhanced Zn2+ storage properties, including excellent capacity and long cycle stability, are achieved.

Mechanisms of Hysteresis and Reversibility across the Voltage-Driven Perovskite-Brownmillerite Transformation in Electrolyte-Gated Ultrathin La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ.

Perovskite cobaltites have emerged as archetypes for electrochemical control of materials properties in electrolyte-gate devices. Voltage-driven redox cycling can be performed between fully oxygenated perovskite and oxygen-vacancy-ordered brownmillerite phases, enabling exceptional modulation of the crystal structure, electronic transport, thermal transport, magnetism, and optical properties. The vast majority of studies, however, have focused heavily on the perovskite and brownmillerite end points. In contrast, here we focus on hysteresis and reversibility across the entire perovskite ↔ brownmillerite topotactic transformation, combining gate-voltage hysteresis loops, minor hysteresis loops, quantitative operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and temperature-dependent (magneto)transport, on ion-gel-gated ultrathin (10-unit-cell) epitaxial La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ films. Gate-voltage hysteresis loops combined with operando diffraction reveal a wealth of new mechanistic findings, including asymmetric redox kinetics due to differing oxygen diffusivities in the two phases, nonmonotonic transformation rates due to the first-order nature of the transformation, and limits on reversibility due to first-cycle structural degradation. Minor loops additionally enable the first rational design of an optimal gate-voltage cycle. Combining this knowledge, we demonstrate state-of-the-art nonvolatile cycling of electronic and magnetic properties, encompassing >105 transport ON/OFF ratios at room temperature, and reversible metal-insulator-metal and ferromagnet-nonferromagnet-ferromagnet cycling, all at 10-unit-cell thickness with high room-temperature stability. This paves the way for future work to establish the ultimate cycling frequency and endurance of such devices.

Effect of pre-intercalation on Li-ion diffusion mapped by topochemical single-crystal transformation and operando investigation.

Limitations in electrochemical performance as well as supply chain challenges have rendered positive electrode materials a critical bottleneck for Li-ion batteries. State-of-the-art Li-ion batteries fall short of accessing theoretical capacities. As such, there is intense interest in the design of strategies that enable the more effective utilization of active intercalation materials. Pre-intercalation with alkali-metal ions has attracted interest as a means of accessing higher reversible capacity and improved rate performance. However, the structural basis for improvements in electrochemical performance remains mostly unexplored. Here we use topochemical single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations in a tunnel-structured ζ-V2O5 positive electrode to illustrate the effect of pre-intercalation in modifying the host lattice and altering diffusion pathways. Furthermore, operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction is used to map Li-ion site preferences and occupancies as a function of the depth of discharge in pre-intercalated materials. Na- and K-ion intercalation 'props open' the one-dimensional tunnel, reduces electrostatic repulsions between inserted Li ions and entirely modifies diffusion pathways, enabling orders of magnitude higher Li-ion diffusivities and accessing higher capacities. Deciphering the atomistic origins of improved performance in pre-intercalated materials on the basis of single-crystal-to-single-crystal topochemical transformation and operando diffraction studies paves the way to site-selective modification approaches for positive electrode design.

Regulated Hydrated Eutectic Electrolyte Enhancing Interfacial Chemical Stability for Highly Reversible Aqueous Aluminum‐Ion Battery with a Wide Temperature Range of −20 to 60 °C

AbstractThe development of aqueous aluminum‐ion batteries (AAIBs) is impeded by pronounced side reactions and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, an eutectic electrolyte named HEE30 (with an optimal molar ratio of 1:8:1:30 for Al(OTf)3, glycerol (Gly), sodium beta‐glycerophosphate pentahydrate (SG), and H2O) to significantly enhance the reversibility of AAIBs across a wide temperature range from −20 to 60 °C is designed. The combination of molecular dynamics simulations and operando synchrotron Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy reveals that the unique eutectic network significantly enhances the hydrogen bonding between Gly and H2O, reduces the solvation interaction of Al3+ with active H2O, thereby lowering the freezing point, extending electrochemical windows and suppressing HER. The X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) tests demonstrate that HEE30 is capable of forming a solid electrolyte interface layer consisting of organic and inorganic components, which effectively inhibits corrosion. Additionally, operando synchrotron XRD and ex situ XPS are employed to investigate the changes in lattice peak width and position of the Prussian white cathode, as well as the reversible storage mechanism during cycling This quantitative design offer immediate advantages for the rational development of low‐cost and safe energy storage batteries, specifically tailored for wide‐temperature operation and durable cycling.

The LiV3 O8 Superlattice Cathode with Optimized Zinc Ion Insertion Chemistry for High Mass-Loading Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Resolving the sluggish transport kinetics of divalent Zn2+ in the cathode lattice and improving mass-loading performance are crucial for advancing the zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) application. Herein, PEO-LiV3 O8 superlattice nanosheets (PEO-LVO) with expanded interlayer spacing (1.16nm) are fabricated to provide a high-rate, stable lifetime, and large mass-loading cathode. The steady in-plane expansion without shrinkage after the first cycle, but reversible H+ /Zn2+ co-insertion in PEO-LVO are demonstrated by operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and ex situ characterizations. Moreover, the large capacity of PEO-LVO is traced back to the optimized Zn2+ insertion chemistry with increased Zn2+ storage ratio, which is facilitated by the interlayer PEO in lowering the Zn2+ diffusion barrier and increased number of active sites from additional interfaces, as anticipated by density functional theory. Due to the optimized ion insertion resulting in stalled interfacial byproducts and rapid kinetics, PEO-LVO achieves excellent high mass-loading performance (areal capacity up to 6.18 mAh cm-2 for freestanding electrode with 24mg cm-2 mass-loading and 2.8 mAh cm-2 at 130mA cm-2 for conventional electrode with 27mg cm-2 mass-loading). As a proof-of-concept, the flexible all-solid-state fiber-shaped AZIBs with high mass-loading woven into a fabric can power an electronic watch, highlighting the application potential of PEO-LVO cathode.

Operando Studies of Bismuth Nanoparticles Embedded in N, O-Doped Porous Carbon for High-Performance Potassium-Ion Hybrid Capacitor.

A highly viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries for stationary electrochemical energy-storage systems is the potassium dual-ion hybrid capacitor (PIHC), especially toward fast-charging capability. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics of negative electrode materials seriously impedes their practical implementation. In this paper, a new negative electrode Bi@RPC (Nano-bismuth confined in nitrogen- and oxygen-doped carbon with rationally designed pores, evidenced by advanced characterization) is developed, leading to a remarkable electrochemical performance. PIHCs building with the active carbon YP50F positive electrode result in a high operation voltage (0.1-4V), and remarkably well-retained energy density at a high-power density (11107W kg-1 at 98Wh kg-1 ). After 5000 cycles the proposed PHICs still show a superior capacity retention of 92.6%. Moreover, a reversible mechanism of "absorption-alloying" of the Bi@RPC nanocomposite is revealed by operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. With the synergistic potassium ions storage mechanism arising from the presence of well-structured pores and nano-sized bismuth, the Bi@RPC electrode exhibits an astonishingly rapid kinetics and high energy density. The results demonstrate that PIHCs with Bi@RPC-based negative electrode is the promising option for simultaneously high-capacity and fast-charging energy storage devices.

Unfolding the potassium storage mechanism of tin selenides

Tin selenides have attracted great attention as anode materials for alkali metal ion batteries in recent years because of the high theoretical capacity. However, there is currently few literatures on the application of tin selenides in potassium ion battery, and the comparative research on the actual potassium storage mechanism of different tin selenides is rarely reported. Herein, tin selenides including SnSe2@C and SnSe@C are synthesized by regulating the selenization temperature, and their potassium storage performance and the mechanism have been comparatively investigated with various physicochemical techniques as well as operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is revealed that the better potassium storage performance of SnSe2@C is mainly due to the generation of highly conductive Se during the first depotassiation process, which not only participates in the subsequent potassiation/depotassiation process, but also improves the conductivity of electrode and facilitates the kinetics of K+. While the sluggish kinetics and partial irreversible decomposition of KxSe lead to the inferior potassium storage performance of SnSe@C.

Understanding How the Suppression of Insertion-Induced Phase Transitions Leads to Fast Charging in Nanoscale LixMoO2.

Fast-charging Li-ion batteries are technologically important for the electrification of transportation and the implementation of grid-scale storage, and additional fundamental understanding of high-rate insertion reactions is necessary to overcome current rate limitations. In particular, phase transformations during ion insertion have been hypothesized to slow charging. Nanoscale materials with modified transformation behavior often show much faster kinetics, but the mechanism for these changes and their specific contribution to fast-charging remain poorly understood. In this work, we combine operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction with electrochemical kinetics analyses to illustrate how nanoscale crystal size leads to suppression of first-order insertion-induced phase transitions and their negative kinetic effects in MoO2, a tunnel structure host material. In electrodes made with micrometer-scale particles, large first-order phase transitions during cycling lower capacity, slow charge storage, and decrease cycle life. In medium-sized nanoporous MoO2, the phase transitions remain first-order, but show a considerably smaller miscibility gap and shorter two-phase coexistence region. Finally, in small MoO2 nanocrystals, the structural evolution during lithiation becomes entirely single-phase/solid-solution. For all nanostructured materials, the changes to the phase transition dynamics lead to dramatic improvements in capacity, rate capability, and cycle life. This work highlights the continuous evolution from a kinetically hindered battery material in bulk form to a fast-charging, pseudocapacitive material through nanoscale size effects. As such, it provides key insight into how phase transitions can be effectively controlled using nanoscale size and emphasizes the importance of these structural dynamics to the fast rate capability observed in nanostructured electrode materials.

Bridging Aqueous and Organic Electrolytes: Intercalation Mechanism of TiS2 in Sustainable Aqueous Li-Ion Batteries

Aqueous Li-ion batteries (ALiBs) are a promising alternative for large-scale grid storage owing to water's non-flammability, low cost, and ease of purification. However, the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of water (1.23 V) significantly limits the energy density of ALiBs, compared to their non-aqueous counterpart. The use of a highly concentrated electrolyte, such as 21 mol kg-1 (molality, m) of LiTFSI in water, known as the “water-in-salt” (WiS) electrolyte, can widen the water ESW to ~3 V, but its high cost and low environmental sustainability hinder the commercialization of ALiBs. Therefore, we explored the feasibility of cycling layered TiS2 anodes in ALiBs containing dilute electrolytes (i.e. 2 m LiTFSI in water).We obtained a reversible discharge capacity of ca. 80 mAh g-1 at a current density of 50 mA g-1. By employing three-electrode cycling with online electrochemical mass spectrometry, we identified potential-dependent gas evolution from the cell triggered by multiple chemical/electrochemical reactions, such as (1) solvent co-intercalation, (2) partial TiS2 exfoliation, and (3) TiS2-catalyzed water splitting in dilute aqueous electrolytes. We also identified a completely different potential profile of TiS2, when cycled in an aqueous electrolyte, with two distinct redox plateaus at 2.95 V and 2.88 V, followed by a sloping region until 2.3 V (all vs. Li+/Li0). Recall that in classic non-aqueous electrolytes, TiS2 shows a characteristic sloping profile centered at ca. 2.2 V, the peculiar potential profile suggests a different intercalation mechanism of TiS2 in aqueous electrolytes.In this presentation, we will share our latest findings from complementary physicochemical and computational methods to tackle the complex interfacial reactivity between layered anodes and aqueous electrolytes. Operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction data revealed the reversible uptake-release of water molecules between TiS2 layers, which was also confirmed energetically favorable by theoretical modeling. By introducing triethyl phosphate (TEP) as a co-solvent, we successfully tuned the electrochemical intercalation behavior of TiS2 from purely Li-intercalation (as in non-aqueous systems, when using only TEP as the solvent) to hydrated-Li-intercalation (as in concentrated and dilute aqueous electrolytes, when using water/TEP mixtures as the solvent). These findings suggest that solvent co-intercalation can be a promising strategy for ALiBs. The general implication of these results on the electrode-electrolyte interface and interphase in aqueous batteries will be systematically discussed in the talk. Prussian Blue Analogues as Positive Electrodes for Mg Batteries: Insights into Mg2+ Intercalation.

Potassium manganese hexacianoferrate has been prepared by co-precipitation from manganese (II) chloride and potassium citrate, with chemical analysis yielding the formula K1.72 Mn[Fe(CN)6 ]0.92 □0.08 ⋅ 1.1H2 O (KMnHCF). Its X-ray diffraction pattern is consistent with a monoclinic structure (space group P 21 /n, no. 14) with cell parameters a=10.1202(6)Å, b=7.2890(5)Å, c=7.0193(4)Å, and β=89.90(1)°. Its redox behavior has been studied in magnesium containing electrolytes. Both K+ ions deintercalated from the structure upon oxidation and contamination with Na+ ions coming from the separator were found to interfere in the electrochemical response. In the absence of alkaline ions, pre-oxidized manganese hexacianoferrate showed reversible magnesium intercalation, and the process has been studied by operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The location of Mg2+ ions in the crystal structure was not possible with the available experimental data. Still, density functional theory simulations indicated that the most favorable position for Mg2+ intercalation is at 32f sites (considering a pseudo cubic F m-3m phase), which are located between 8c and Mn sites.

In Situ Formed Amorphous Bismuth Sulfide Cathodes with a Self-Controlled Conversion Storage Mechanism for High Performance Hybrid Ion Batteries.

Conversion-type electrodes offer a promising multielectron transfer alternative to intercalation hosts with potentially high-capacity release in batteries. However, the poor cycle stability severely hinders their application, especially in aqueous multivalence-ion systems, which can fundamentally impute to anisotropic ion diffusion channel collapse in pristine crystals and irreversible bond fracture during repeated conversion. Here, an amorphous bismuth sulfide (a-BS) formed in situ with unprecedentedly self-controlled moderate conversion Cu2+ storage is proposed to comprehensively regulate the isotropic ion diffusion channels and highly reversible bond evolution. Operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and substantive verification tests reveal that the total destruction of the Bi─S bond and unsustainable deep alloying are fully restrained. The amorphous structure with robust ion diffusion channels, unique self-controlled moderate conversion, and high electrical conductivity discharge products synergistically boosts the capacity (326.7 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 ), rate performance (194.5 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1 ), and long-lifespan stability (over 8000 cycles with a decay rate of only 0.02 ‰ per cycle). Moreover, the a-BS Cu2+ ‖Zn2+ hybrid ion battery can well supply a stable energy density of 238.6Wh kg-1 at 9760W kg-1 . The intrinsically high-stability conversion mechanism explored on amorphous electrodes provides a new opportunity for advanced aqueous storage.

Pyrochlore-Type Iron Hydroxy Fluorides as Low-Cost Lithium-Ion Cathode Materials for Stationary Energy Storage.

Pyrochlore-type iron (III) hydroxy fluorides (Pyr-IHF) are appealing low-cost stationary energy storage materials due to the virtually unlimited supply of their constituent elements, their high energy densities and fast Li-ion diffusion. However, the prohibitively high cost of synthesis and cathode architecture currently prevent their commercial use in low-cost Li-ion batteries. Herein, we present a facile and cost-effective dissolution-precipitation synthesis of Pyr-IHF from soluble iron (III) fluoride precursors. High capacity retention by synthesized Pyr-IHF of > 80% after 600cycles at a high current density of 1Ag-1 was obtained, without elaborate electrode engineering. Operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction guided the selective synthesis of Pyr-IHF such that different water contents could be tested for their effect on the rate capability. Li-ion diffusion was found to occur in the 3D hexagonal channels of Pyr-IHF, formed by corner-sharing FeF6-x (OH)x octahedra. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Accumulative Delocalized Mo 4d Electrons to Bound the Volume Expansion and Accelerate Kinetics in Mo6S8 Cathode for High-Performance Aqueous Cu2+ Storage.

Electronic structure defines the conductivity and ion absorption characteristics of a functional electrode, significantly affecting the charge transfer capability in batteries, while it is rarely thought to be involved in mesoscopic volume and diffusion kinetics of the host lattice for promoting ion storage. Here, we first correlate the evolution in electronic structure of the Mo6S8 cathode with the ability to bound volume expansion and accelerate diffusion kinetics for high-performance aqueous Cu2+ storage. Operando synchrotron energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that accumulative delocalized Mo 4d electrons enhance the Mo-Mo interaction with distinctly contracting and uniformizing Mo6 clusters during the reduction of Mo6S8, which potently restrain lattice expansion and release space to promote Cu2+ diffusion kinetics. Operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and comprehensive characterizations further validate the structural and electrochemical properties induced by the Cu2+ intercalation electronic structure, endowing the Mo6S8 cathode a high specific capacity with small volume expansion, fast ions diffusion, and long-term cycling stability.

Facile and Scalable Development of High-Performance Carbon-Free Tin-Based Anodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Tin (Sn)-based anodes for sodium (Na)-ion batteries possess higher Na-storage capacity and better safety aspects compared to hard carbon -based anodes but suffer from poor cyclic stability due to volume expansion/contraction and concomitant loss in mechanical integrity during sodiation/desodiation. To address this, the usage of nanoscaled electrode-active particles and nanoscaled-carbon-based buffers has been explored, but with compromises with the tap density, accrued irreversible surface reactions, overall capacity (for "inactive" carbon), and adoption of non-scalable/complex preparation routes. Against this backdrop, anode-active "layered" bismuth (Bi) has been incorporated with Sn via a facile-cum-scalable mechanical-milling approach, leading to individual electrode-active particles being composed of well-dispersed Sn and Bi phases. The optimized carbon-free Sn-Bi compositions, benefiting from the combined effects of "buffering" action and faster Na transport of Bi, to go with the greater Na-storage capacity and lower operating potential of Sn, exhibit excellent cyclic stability (viz., ∼83-92% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 1C) and rate capability (viz., no capacity drop from C/5 to 2C, with only ∼25% drop at 5C), despite having fairly coarse particles (∼5-10 μm). As proven by operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and stress measurements, the sequential sodiation/desodiation of the components and, concomitantly, stress build-ups at different potentials provide "buffering" action even for such "active-active" Sn-Bi compositions. Furthermore, the overall stress development upon sodiation of Bi has been found to be significantly lower than that of Sn (by a factor of ∼3.8), which renders Bi promising as a "buffer" material, in general. Dissemination of such complex interplay between electrode-active components during electrochemical cycling also paves the way for the development of high-performance, safe, and scalable "alloying-reaction"-based anode materials for Na-ion batteries and beyond, sans the need for ultrafine/nanoscaled electrode particles or "inactive" nanoscaled-carbon-based "buffer" materials.

Methylboronic acid MIDA ester (ADM) as an effective additive in electrolyte to improve cathode electrolyte interlayer performance of LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 electrode

We investigated the effectiveness of using methylboronic acid MIDA ester (ADM) as an additive in an electrolyte to enhance the overall electrochemical and material properties of an LNCAO (LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2) cathode. The cyclic stability of the cathode material measured at 40 °C (@ 0.2 C) showed an enhanced capacity of 144.28 mAh g−1 (@ 100 cycles), a capacity retention of 80%, and a high coulombic efficiency (99.5%), in contrast to these same properties without the electrolyte additive (37.5 mAh g−1, ~ 20%, and 90.4%), thus confirming the effectiveness of the additive. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis distinctly showed that the ADM additive suppressed the EC-Li+ ion coordination (1197 cm−1 and 728 cm−1) in the electrolyte, thereby improving the cyclic performance of the LNCAO cathode. The cathode after 100 charge/discharge cycles revealed that the ADM-containing system exhibited better surface stability of the grains in the LNCAO cathode, whereas distinct cracks were observed in the system without the ADM in the electrolyte. A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed the presence of a thin, uniform and dense cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) film on the surface of LNCAO cathode. An operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) test identified the high structural reversibility of the LNCAO cathode with a CEI layer formed by the ADM, which effectively maintained the structural stability of the layered material. The additive effectively inhibited the decomposition of electrolyte compositions, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

In-Plane Ordering of Li-Intercalated Turbostratic Graphite for the Negative Electrode of High-Power Long-Life Li-Ion Batteries

Turbostratic carbon graphitized at ca. 2000 °C exhibits low discharge capacity but excellent pulse charge/discharge characteristics and long cycle performance. In this study, to clarify the charge/discharge mechanism, the intercalation process of Li into turbostratic graphite was investigated by operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and 7Li-NMR spectroscopy. The dataset obtained from both methods was synchronously analyzed by treating it as a function of the LiC x composition estimated from the charge/discharge curves. It was found that both the synchrotron X-ray diffraction profile and 7Li-NMR spectrum dynamically changed in conjunction with the composition and the LiC9-type and LiC6-type in-plane structures formed in turbostratic graphite, as in the case of natural graphite when Li ions intercalate. The domain formed by these in-plane structures was a short-range ordered structure that changed depending on the misorientation angle between the two adjacent graphene sheets, and a stage structure with a periodic distance in the c-axis direction did not form, as in the case of natural graphite.

Elucidating the Reaction Mechanism of Mn2+ Electrolyte Additives in Aqueous Zinc Batteries.

Aqueous zinc batteries (ZIBs) have attracted considerable attention in recent years because of their high safety and eco-friendly features. Numerous studies have shown that adding Mn2+ salts to ZnSO4 electrolytes enhanced overall energy densities and extended the cycling life of Zn/MnO2 batteries. It is commonly believed that Mn2+ additives in the electrolyte inhibit the dissolution of MnO2 cathode. To better understand the role of Mn2+ electrolyte additives, the ZIB using a Co3 O4 cathode instead of MnO2 in 0.3m MnSO4 + 3m ZnSO4 electrolyte is built to avoid interference from MnO2 cathode. As expected, the Zn/Co3 O4 battery exhibits electrochemical characteristics nearly identical to those of Zn/MnO2 batteries. Operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and electrochemical analyses are carried out to determine the reaction mechanism and pathway. This work demonstrates that the electrochemical reaction occurring at cathode involves a reversible Mn2+ /MnO2 deposition/dissolution process, while a chemical reaction of Zn2+ /Zn4 SO4 (OH)6 ∙5H2 O deposition/dissolution is involved during part of the charge/discharge cycle due to the change in the electrolyte environment. The reversible Zn2+ /Zn4 SO4 (OH)6 ∙5H2 O reaction contributes no capacity and lowers the diffusion kinetics of the Mn2+ /MnO2 reaction, which prevents the operation of ZIBs at high current densities.

Time and space resolved operando synchrotron X-ray and Neutron diffraction study of NMC811/Si–Gr 5 Ah pouch cells

Silicon–Graphite blended electrodes in Li-ion batteries have been proposed as a way to harness the high capacity of Si as an anode material, while minimising the negative effects of their large volume expansion. NMC 811 is the current state-of-the-art layered oxide cathode material, where the cobalt content of the cathode has been minimised. These are the two of the most promising materials for achieving electric vehicle targets in terms of performance, cyclability and price, however their degradation mechanism is not fully understood. Here these two materials have been used to manufacture 5 Ah prototype multi-layer pouch cells, which are aged and then studied using two complimentary diffraction techniques. Neutron diffraction has enabled a quantitative analysis of phase transitions in Si–Gr anodes in a pristine and degraded cell, and the alloying behaviour of Si and Li has been inferred by comparison of identical cells with either graphite or Si–Gr anodes. Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction has been used to make an operando 2D map of the cathode and anode lithiation in the pouch cell, as well as to map the volume expansion across the cell. This approach has revealed that degradation entails significant inhomogeneities across both electrodes, linked to the inhomogeneous volume expansion of the Si–Gr anodes.

Ultrastable Cu2+ Intercalation Chemistry Based on a Niobium Sulfide Nanosheet Cathode for Advanced Aqueous Storage Devices

Exploring stable and durable cathodes for cost-effective reversible aqueous batteries is highly desirable for grid-scale energy storage applications, but significant challenges remain. Herein, we disclosed an ultrastable Cu2+ intercalation chemistry in mass-produced exfoliated NbS2 nanosheets to build ultralong lifespan aqueous batteries with cost advantages. Anisotropic interplanar expansion of NbS2 lattices balanced dynamic Cu2+ incorporation and the highly reversible redox reaction of Nb4+/Nb(4-δ)+ couple were illuminated by operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy, affording an extraordinary capacity of approximately 317 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 and a good stability of 92.2% capacity retention after 40000 cycles at 10 A g-1. Impressively, a budget NbS2||Fe hybrid ion cell involving an aqueous electrolyte/Fe-metal anode is established and provides a reliable energy supply of 225.4 Wh kg-1 at 750 W kg-1, providing insights for building advanced aqueous battery systems for large-scale applications.

Na2ZrFe(PO4)3─A Rhombohedral NASICON-Structured Material: Synthesis, Structure and Na-Intercalation Behavior.

A NASICON-structured earth-abundant mixed transition metal (TM) containing Na-TM-phosphate, viz., Na2ZrFe(PO4)3, has been prepared via a sol-gel route using a low-cost Fe3+-based precursor. The as-prepared material crystallizes in the desired rhombohedral NASICON structure (space group: R3̅c) at room temperature. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, etc., have been performed to determine the crystal structure, associated details, composition, and electronic structures. In light of the structural features, as one of the possible functionalities of Na2FeZr(PO4)3, Na-intercalation/deintercalation has been examined, which indicates the occurrence of reversible electrochemical Na-insertion/extraction via Fe2+/Fe3+ redox at an average potential of ∼2.5 V. The electrochemical data and direct evidences from operando synchrotron XRD indicate that the rhombohedral structure is preserved during Na-insertion/extraction, albeit within a certain range of Na-content (i.e., ∼2-3 p.f.u.), beyond which rhombohedral → monoclinic transformation takes place. Within this range, Na-insertion/extraction takes place via solid-solution pathway, resulting in outstanding cyclic stability, higher Na-diffusivity, and good rate-capability. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this represents the first in-depth structural, compositional, and electrochemical studies with Na2ZrFe(PO4)3, along with the interplay between those, which provide insights into the design of similar low-cost materials for various applications, including sustainable electrochemical energy storage systems.
