Zirconium(IV) coordination-mediated rapid and versatile post-modification of polydopamine coating as stationary phase for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

In recent years, mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA)-based materials have attracted significant attention in the field of open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) owing to their diverse and appealing properties. However, previously established functionalized PDA coating-based CEC stationary phases predominantly relied on the latent reactivity of PDA with amine/thiol-containing molecules, limiting the types of applicable modifiers and requiring time-consuming reaction processes. Herein, we presented a versatile and efficient method for the facile and rapid fabrication of diverse functionalized PDA coatings as OT-CEC stationary phases through a Zr(IV) coordination-mediated post-modification strategy. Different kinds of modifiers, including octadecylamine (ODA), lauric acid (LA), and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), were rapidly and robustly grafted onto the PDA coating, verified through multiple characterization techniques. The influences of preparation parameters on the grafting efficiency of the functionalized PDA coating were systematically investigated. Utilizing the Zr(IV)-mediated ODA-, LA- and PFOA-functionalized PDA-based OT-CEC columns, we achieved high-efficiency baseline separation of a series of neutral analytes with excellent repeatability, good stability, and long lifetime. Given the strong universality of the Zr(IV) coordination-mediated post-modification approach, our study provides an effective pathway for advancing the development of a wider range of functional PDA-based chromatographic stationary phases.

Monomer-mediated growth of β-cyclodextrin-based microporous organic network as stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography.

CD-MONs (β-cyclodextrin-based microporous organic networks), derived from β-cyclodextrin, possess notable hydrophobic characteristics, a considerable specific surface area, and remarkable stability, rendering them highly advantageous in separation science. This research aimed to investigate the utility of CD-MONs in chromatography separation. Through a monomer-mediated technique, we fabricated an innovative CD-MON modified capillary column for application in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). The CD-MON-based stationary phase on the capillary's inner surface was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We assessed the performance of the CD-MON modified capillary column for separation purposes. The microstructure and pronounced hydrophobicity of CD-MON contributed to enhanced selectivity and resolution in separating diverse hydrophobic analytes, such as alkylbenzenes, halogenated benzenes, parabens, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The maximum column efficiency achieved was 1.5 × 105 N/m. Additionally, the CD-MON modified capillary column demonstrated notably high column capacity, with a methylbenzene mass loading capacity of up to 197.9pmol, surpassing that of previously reported porous-material-based capillaries. Furthermore, this self-constructed column was effectively utilized for PAHs determination in actual environmental water samples, exhibiting spiked recoveries ranging from 93.2 to 107.9% in lake water samples. These findings underscore the potential of CD-MON as an effective stationary phase in separation science.

Chiral-induced covalent organic framework as novel chiral stationary phase for chiral separation using open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

As a novel class of chiral stationary phase (CPS) material, chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs) have already shown great promise in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) for chiral separation. The synthesis methods of CCOFs used in OT-CEC mainly include bottom-up, post modification and chiral induction. The CCOFs synthesized by bottom-up and post modification strategies already have lots of applications in capillary electrochromatography, however, the chiral-induced synthesized via an asymmetric catalytic strategy has not yet been reported for using as the chiral stationary phase (CPS) in OT-CEC or even in chromatographic separation. Herein, the chiral-induced COF (Λ)-TpPa-1 was synthesized by asymmetric catalytic synthesis and coated on the inner surface of a capillary by an in-situ growth strategy as the CPS for chiral drug separation. The baseline separation of six enantiomers was achieved within 14 min, with a high-resolution (Rs) range from 1.85 to 6.75. Moreover, the resolution and migration time of the capillary keep stable within 160 runs, showing its superior stability and repeatability. This research provides a new idea for the development and application of novel CPS materials in the field of capillary electrochromatography separation, also shows the new application of chiral induced COFs. Furthermore, the chiral-induced CCOFs can be easily applied to other chromatographic separation fields, exhibiting its extensive application value in chiral analysis separation.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks as stationary phase for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

BackgroundCapillary electrochromatography (CEC) stationary phases have always been the focus of attention. The selection of excellent stationary phases are the key to realize separate of different compounds. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are porous materials connected by hydrogen bonds between molecules, which have the advantages of renewable, high specific surface area and mild synthesis conditions. At present, HOFs are used in gas adsorption and storage, catalysis and drug delivery. Because of its unique advantages, HOFs have a bright future as CEC stationary phases. ResultsUsing melamine (MA) and 1,3,6,8-tetra (4-carboxylphenyl)pyrene (H4TBAPy) as reaction monomers, a HOFs named MA/PFC-1 was synthesized by solvent evaporation at room temperature. The inner wall of the capillary column was coated with MA/PFC-1 by chemical bonding. Sulfonamides were used as the target analytes. The effects of pH, phosphate buffer solution concentration, organic additive content and applied voltage on sulfonamides separation were investigated. The MA/PFC-1-coated capillary column had good resolution (>1.5) and reproducibility. The intra-day, inter-day, column-to-column, and inter-batch precision of the retention times were 0.03%–0.09%, 0.04%–0.09%, 0.03%–0.14% and 0.06%–0.09%, respectively. The intra-day, inter-day, column-to-column, and inter-batch precision of the peak areas were 0.11%–0.25%, 0.13%–0.20%, 0.12%–0.15% and 0.08%–0.15%, respectively. The MA/PFC-1-coated capillary column was run 150 consecutive times, and the results showed no noticeable change, which proved that this method had good stability. SignificanceThis work applied HOFs to CEC. The results show the that MA/PFC-1-coated capillary column has good separation performance. The MA/PFC-1-coated capillary column has been successfully applied to the determination of sulfamethoxazole in tablets, which has practical application value. To open up the application of HOFs in CEC and provide a new idea for developing new CEC stationary phases.

Preparation and study of a capillary electrochromatographic column prepared by conjugating β-CD COFs and gold-poly glycidyl methacrylate nanoparticles.

A new enantioselective open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) was developed employing β-cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks (β-CD COFs) conjugated gold-poly glycidyl methacrylate nanoparticles (Au-PGMA NPs) as a stationary phase. The resulting coating layer on the inner wall of the fabricated capillary column was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and electroosmotic flow (EOF) experiments. The performance of the fabricated capillary column was evaluated by CEC using enantiomers of seven model analytes, including two proton pump inhibitors (PPIs, omeprazole and tenatoprazole), three amino acids (AAs, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan), and two fluoroquinolones (FQs, gatifloxacin and sparfloxacin). The influences of coating time, buffer concentration, buffer pH, and applied voltage on enantioseparation were investigated to obtain satisfactory enantioselectivity. In the optimum conditions, the enantiomers of seven analytes were fully resolved within 10min with high resolutions of 3.03 to 5.25. The inter- to intra-day and column-to-column repeatabilities of the fabricated capillary column were lower than 4.26%RSD. Furthermore, molecular docking studies were performed based on the chiral fabricated column and as ligand isomers of analytes using Auto Dock Tools. The binding energies and interactions acquired from docking results of analytes supported the experimental data.

Chiral zeolite beta used as stationary phase for enantioseparation in miniaturized open tubular capillary electrochromatography with amperometric detection

BackgroundWith the rapid growth of the demand for optically pure compounds in the fields of biology, medicine and stereospecific synthesis, it is of great importance to develop efficient, economical, simple enantioseparation and analysis methods. Open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) has attracted much attention in the field of chiral separation, but its column capacity and the sensitivity of common-used optical detection are relatively low. Zeolite beta nanomaterial is both enantioselective and size-selective, providing suitable chiral microenvironment for chiral recognition, and amperometric detection (AD) avoids the low sensitivity caused by the short optical path in optical detection to some extent. ResultsZeolite beta nanomaterials with different particle sizes (25, 50 and 200 nm) were synthesized, and the morphology and structure were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Then, a novel chiral OT column was prepared by one-step method using zeolite beta nanomaterial as chiral stationary phase, and its separation performance was characterized by miniaturized CEC with AD (mini-CEC-AD) device. Under the optimum conditions, six groups of chiral drugs achieved baseline separation. Norepinephrine enantiomers were used for evaluating the inter-day, intra-day and inter-column reproducibility of the prepared open-tubular column. The relative standard deviations of migration time, peak area, resolution and selectivity factor were within 8.7 %. The limits of detection for norepinephrine enantiomers were 0.18 μg mL−1 (S/N = 3), and the average recoveries were in range of 96.7–105.0 %. This developed method has been successfully applied to the analysis of impurity enantiomer in potassium dichromate (+)-norepinephrine injection sample. SignificanceZeolite beta nanomaterial was used as the stationary phase to prepare chiral OT columns for the first time, and this one-step preparation method is simple and easy. The introduction of zeolite beta enriches the types of chiral stationary phase materials in electrochromatographic columns, and mini-OT-CEC-AD system provides an alternative for fast enantioseparation of chiral compounds.

TpBD/UiO-66-NH2 micro-mesoporous hybrid material as a stationary phase for open tubular capillary electrochromatography.

The excellent stability of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and the diversity of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) make MOF/COF hybrid materials promising candidates for chromatographic stationary phases. In this paper, a TpBD/UiO-66-NH2 hybrid material was synthesized through a Schiff-base reaction between TpBD COFs and UiO-66-NH2 MOFs; characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; and bonded to a capillary to prepare a TpBD/UiO-66-NH2-bonded open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) column. Results suggested that the hybrid material had the crystal morphology of a single COF and MOF, a micro-mesoporous structure, and good thermal stability. The inner surface of the OT-CEC column was tightly and uniformly distributed with the stationary phase (∼1.5 μm). The baseline separation of 13 amino acids and three families (4 acidic antibiotics, 4 preservatives and 6 sulfonamides) of emerging pollutant mixtures was achieved due to the synergistic effect of TpBD and UiO-66-NH2 in the stationary phase. The OT-CEC column showed good reproducibility and stability with relative standard deviations of migration time and resolutions in the range of 1.17-3.93% and 1.79-4.31%, respectively.

Fragment-based approach to study fungicide-biomimetic membrane interactions.

In this study, the molecular interactions of the allylamine-type fungicide butenafine and a set of substructures ("fragments") with liposomes mimicking biological membranes were studied to gain a better understanding of the structural factors governing membrane affinity and perturbation. Specifically, drug/fragment-membrane interactions were investigated using an interdisciplinary approach involving micro differential scanning calorimetry, open-tubular capillary electrochromatography, nanoplasmonic sensing, and quartz crystal microbalance. By incubating the drug and the fragment compounds with liposomes with varying lipid composition or by externally adding the compounds to preformed liposomes, a detailed mechanistic picture on the underlying drug/fragment-membrane interactions was obtained. The nature and the degree of ionisation of polar head groups of the lipids had a major influence on the nature of drug-membrane interactions, and so had the presence and relative concentration of cholesterol within the membranes. The in-depth understanding of drug/fragment-membranes interactions established by the presented interdisciplinary fragment-based approach may be useful in guiding the design and early-stage evaluation of prospective antifungal drug candidates, and the discovery of agents with improved membrane penetrating characteristics in general.

Rapid and in-situ preparation COFs coated capillary by adsorption method for the separation and determination of phthalate ester using CEC

As a novel class of stationary phase materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown great promise in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography. However, the current preparation of COFs coating capillaries heavily relies on tedious and time-consuming covalent bond methods. In this work, a novel, simple and rapid adsorption method was developed for fabrication of TPB-DMTP COF (fabricated from 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TPB) and 2,5-dimethoxyterephthalaldehyde (DMTP)) coated capillary. Due to the crystallization process of the COF is greatly shortened because pre-modification capillary does not require silane coupling agent, this method enables the rapid preparation of COFs-coated capillaries. The organic molecular building units only need 25 min to form a stable COFs coating on the inner wall of a capillary by this method. To our knowledge, this is the shortest method for preparing COFs coated capillary up to now. The performance of the TPB-DMTP COF coated capillary was evaluated by using phthalate esters as model analytes. The results demonstrated that the TPB-DMTP COF coated capillary has excellent repeatability and stability. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the analyte's retention time of intra-day, inter-day and column-to-column were in the range of 0.05 %–0.27 %, 0.31 %–0.63 % and 0.31 %–0.88 %, respectively. And, no significant changes were observed in separation efficiency and retention time after over 200 runs. Finally, the TPB-DMTP COF coated capillary was applied for the determination of phthalates in marketed plastic bag and the recovery ranged from 88.0 % to 114.0 %.

Open tubular capillary electrochromatography with dual-responsive polymer as coating for separation of chromones

Fabricating polymeric coatings that are responsive to multiple/dual stimuli is crucial and remains a major challenge in the development of highly efficient open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). In this study, a pH and temperature-responsive block copolymer, poly(styrene-maleic anhydride 2-dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate), P(St-MAn-DMAEMA), was designed and synthesized. Using P(St-MAn-DMAEMA) as the coating, an OT-CEC protocol was constructed for the analysis of chromones. The morphology and hydrophobicity-hydrophilicity of the polymeric coating could change via varying the environmental conditions, affecting the separation efficiency of OT-CEC. Interestingly, the best performance of OT-CEC was achieved at pH 9.7 and 45 °C via tuning the interactions between the coating and the analytes. Additionally, the proposed OT-CEC method exhibited a good linear range for the detection of the three test chromones from 10.0 to 100.0 μM, with all correlation coefficients (R2) >0.997. The coatings also had good stability and reusability. This work provides an approach for the preparation of new multiple-stimuli-responsive polymeric coatings for the establishment of OT-CEC systems.

Research progress on the construction and applications of metal-organic frameworks in chromatographic stationary phases

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials composed of metal centers or clusters assembled with organic ligands. These materials possess excellent properties, such as large surface areas, high porosities, uniform pore sizes, and diverse structures. Thus, MOFs have been widely applied in various fields, including catalysis, adsorption, sensing, sample pretreatment, and chromatographic separation. The applications of MOFs as stationary phases for chromatographic separation and analysis have attracted considerable attention from the research community in recent years. Compared with traditional chromatographic stationary phases, such as mesoporous silica, nanoparticles, and porous layers, MOFs possess flexible and tunable pore sizes and structures, thereby enabling precise control over their intermolecular interactions. Furthermore, the wide range of functional ligands and topologies of MOFs could potentially facilitate the separation and analysis of complex samples. These unique advantages render MOFs highly suitable for constructing novel chromatographic stationary phases.This article focuses primarily on the construction methods of MOFs as chromatographic stationary phases, and provides an overview of the latest research advancements in their applications in several chromatographic separation techniques such as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and capillary electrochromatography (CEC). The existing methods for the preparation and construction of MOFs-based chromatographic stationary phases are classified and evaluated. The construction methods for MOFs as stationary phases for HPLC mainly include filling, precursor-doped polymerization, and post-modification. The construction methods for MOFs as stationary phases for GC predominantly include in situ growth, static coating, and dynamic coating. The stationary phases for CEC can be categorized into packed columns, monolithic columns, and open-tubular columns. Compared with monolithic and packed columns, open-tubular CEC (OT-CEC) offers numerous advantages, including a more flexible and convenient preparation method, enhanced compatibility with various separation media, and higher separation efficiency. Consequently, OT-CEC has emerged as an important method for investigating the preparation of stationary phases for CEC. Several methods such as physical adsorption, covalent attachment, and electrostatic interactions have been developed for the preparation and modification of MOFs-based CEC stationary phases, and extensive studies have been conducted to optimize the performance and applications of MOFs in OT-CEC. However, the existing methods for constructing MOFs-based chromatographic stationary phases present certain limitations. Therefore, the selection of the appropriate MOFs, optimization of their preparation methods, and examination of their performance in different separation modes have become the focus of intensive research.This review also summarizes the different analytical targets (e. g., chiral small molecules, biomacromolecules, and nonchiral molecules) and corresponding separation effects achieved using various MOFs-based chromatographic stationary phases. Finally, future studies focusing on the development of MOFs as chromatographic separation media are discussed. Overall, this review provides a valuable reference for the rational construction and practical applications of advanced MOFs-based chromatographic stationary phases.

Dynamic in situ growth of bonded-phase silica nanospheres on silica capillary inner walls for open-tubular liquid chromatography

Silica nanospheres (SNS) were grown on the inner walls of silica capillaries through a dynamic in situ nucleation process to prepare a highly porous and large accessible surface area substrate. The SNS were then functionalized with octadecyl (C18), 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and amino groups to develop robust and efficient chromatographic stationary phases. The modified silica capillaries were exploited for open-tubular liquid chromatography (OT-LC) and open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) applications. The prepared stationary phases were compared to conventional capillaries in terms of separation performance. The synthesis process was optimized, and the bonded-phase stationary phases were characterized by the electron microscopy technique. The effects of different solvents, additives, and functional groups on the geometry and chromatographic resolving power of the SNS were envisaged. The capillaries modified with octadecyl groups were evaluated for the separation of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, phenones, alkenylbenzenes, and enantiomers of chlorophenoxy herbicides. As an application instance, an SNS-C18-coated capillary was utilized for the separation of alkenylbenzenes from clove extract and protein digest medium, through OT-LC and OT-CEC techniques, respectively. The β-CD functionalized capillary was applied for the OT-CEC separation of a dichlorprop racemic mixture.Graphical abstract

Fluorinated covalent-organic polymers as stationary phase for analysis of organic fluorides by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography.

Fluorinated porous materials, which can provide specific fluorine-fluorine interaction, hold great promise for fluoride analysis. Here, a novel fluorinated covalent-organic polymer was prepared by using 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorotelephtal aldehyde as the precursors and introduced as stationary phase for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography. The as-synthesized fluorinated covalent-organic polymer and the modified capillary column were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Based on strong hydrophobic interaction and fluorine-fluorine interaction provided by fluorinated covalent-organic polymer coating layer, the modified column showed powerful separation selectivity toward hydrophobic compounds, organic fluorides, and fluorinated pesticides. Additionally, the fluorinated covalent-organic polymer with good porosity and regular shape was uniformly and tightly coated on the capillary inner wall. The obtained highest column efficiency could reach up to 1.2 × 105 plates⋅m-1 for fluorophenol. The loading capacity of the modified column can reach 141pmol for trifluorotoluene. Besides, the relative standard deviations of retention times for intraday run (n=5), interday run (n=3), and between columns (n=3) were all less than 2.55%. Significantly, this novel fluorinated material-based stationary phase shows great application potential in fluorides analysis.

Chiral covalent organic framework-based open tubular capillary electrochromatography column for enantioseparation of selected amino acids and pesticides.

A novel chiral covalent organic framework (CCOF) was synthesized with an imine covalent organic framework TpBD (synthesized via Schiff-base reaction between phloroglucinol (Tp) and benzidine (BD)) modified using (1S)-(+)-10-camphorsulfonyl chloride as chiral ligand by chemical bonding method for the first time, and was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, thermogravimetry analysis, and zeta-potential. The results revealed that the CCOF had good crystallinity, high specific surface area and good thermal stability. Then, the CCOF was employed as stationary phase in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) column (the CCOF-bonded OT-CEC column) for enantioseparation of 21 single chiral compounds (12 natural amino acids including acidic, neutral and basic, 9 pesticides including herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) and simultaneous enantioseparation of mixture amino acids and pesticides with similar structures or properties. Under the optimized CEC conditions, all the analytes reached the baseline separation with high resolutions of 1.67-25.93 and selectivity factors of 1.06-3.49 in 8min. Finally, the reproducibility and stability of the CCOF-bonded OT-CEC column were measured. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) of retention time and separation efficiency were 0.58-4.57% and 1.85-4.98%, and not obviously changed after 150 runs. These results demonstrate that COFs-modified OT-CEC explore a promising method to separate chiral compounds.

Preparation of β-cyclodextrin covalent organic framework-immobilized poly(glycidyl methacrylate) nanoparticle-coated open tubular capillary electrochromatography column for chiral separation.

A new enantioselective open-tubular capillary electrochromatography was developed employing poly(glycidyl methacrylate) nanoparticles/β-cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks chemically immobilized on the inner wall of the capillary as a stationary phase. A pretreated silica-fused capillary reacted with 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane followed by poly(glycidyl methacrylate) nanoparticles and β-cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks through a ring-opening reaction. The resulting coating layer on the capillary was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The electroosmotic flow was studied to evaluate the variation of the immobilized columns. The chiral separation performance of the fabricated capillary columns was validated by the analysis of the four racemic proton pump inhibitors including lansoprazole, pantoprazole, tenatoprazole, and omeprazole. The influences of bonding concentration, bonding time, bonding temperature, buffer type and concentration, buffer pH, and applied voltage on the enantioseparation of four proton pump inhibitors were investigated. Good enantioseparation efficiencies were achieved for all enantiomers. In the optimum conditions, the enantiomers of four proton pump inhibitors were fully resolved within 10min with high resolutions of 9.5-13.9. The column-to-column and inter- to intra-day repeatability of the fabricated capillary columns through relative standard deviation were found better than 9.54%, exhibiting satisfactory stability and repeatability of the fabricated capillary columns.

A chiral metal-organic framework synthesized by the mixture of chiral and non-chiral organic ligands for enantioseparation of drugs by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

A chiral metal-organic framework L-Histidine-Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (L-His-ZIF-67) was synthesized by the mixture of chiral organic ligand L-histidine and non-chiral organic ligand 2-methylimidazole directly, and to the author's knowledge, the chiral L-His-ZIF-67 coated capillary column we prepared has still not been reported to date in the field of capillary electrophoresis. This chiral metal-organic frameworks material was used as the chiral stationary phase for enantioseparation of drugs by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography. The separation conditions such as pH value, buffer concentration and proportion of organic modifier were optimized. Under optimal conditions, the established enantioseparation system achieved good separation effect, and the resolution of five chiral drugs: esmolol (7.93), nefopam (3.03), salbutamol (2.42), scopolamine (1.08) and sotalol (0.81). In addition, the chiral recognition mechanism of L-His-ZIF-67 was elucidated by a series of mechanism experiments, and the specific interaction force was preliminarily speculated.

Cyclodextrin-NH-MIL-53 open tubular stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography enantioseparation.

A novel chiral group functionalized metal-organic framework, Cyclodextrin-NH-MIL-53, was synthesized and modified on the inner wall of a capillary column via a post-synthetic process. The prepared chiral metal-organic framework was utilized as a chiral capillary stationary phase and used in an open-tubular capillary electrochromatography method to enantioseparate several racemic amino acids. Excellent enantioseparation of five pairs of enantiomers was obtained in this chiral separation system (Resolutions of D/L-Alanine = 16.844, D/L-Cysteine = 3.617, D/L-Histidine = 9.513, D/L-Phenylalanine = 8.133, and D/L-Tryptophan = 2.778). The prepared Cyclodextrin-NH-MIL-53 and the Cyclodextrin-NH-MIL-53-based capillary columns were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourie-transform infrared spectroscopy, and circular dichroism. The chiral capillary electrochromatography conditions, such as separation conditions, amount of Cyclodextrin-NH-MIL-53, and electroosmotic flow, were optimized. This research is estimated to present a novel insight and method for the design and use of metal-organic framework-based capillaries for enantioseparation.

Preparation of open tubular capillary column covalently coated with polystyrene sulfonate with 4,4'-azobis (4-cyanopentanoyl chloride) as polymerization initiator for electrochromatographic separation of alkaloids, sulfonamides and peptides.

An open tubular capillary electrochromatography column covalently bonded with polystyrene sulphonate was prepared via in situ polymerization using functionalized azo-initiator 4,4'-Azobis(4-cyanopentanoyl chloride). Scanning electron, fluorescence and atomic force microscopy techniques showed the formation of a relatively rough layer of polymer. In addition, -CN and C = O stretching vibrations from infrared spectroscopy proved the successful immobilization of the azo-initiator through covalent bonding and X-rayPhotoelectronSpectroscopy confirmed the elemental composition of the formed polymer layer. The prepared column was found to be appropriate for small and medium-sized molecules separation. Compared to bare fused silica capillary column higher selectivity and resolution were obtained for the separation of alkaloids, sulfonamides and peptides as a result of the electrostatic and pi-pi stacking interactions between the small organic molecules and the coated column without compromising the electroosmotic flow mobility. Separation efficiency was also increased compared to the bare capillary for the separation of alkaloids (about 1.5 times). Moreover, intraday, inter day, intra batch and inter batch relative standard deviation values of retention time and peak area of peptides were within 2% and 10%, respectively, indicating a good repeatability of the column preparation procedure. The developed method for the covalent bonding of polymers through a functionalized azo-initiator could represent a promising stable method for the preparation of open tubular column. A chiral metal-organic framework {(HQA)(ZnCl2)(2.5H2O)}n for the enantioseparation of chiral amino acids and drugs

Chiral metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs) with enantiomeric subunits have been employed in chiral chemistry. In this study, a CMOF formed from 6-methoxyl-(8S,9R)-cinchonan-9-ol-3-carboxylic acid (HQA) and ZnCl2, {(HQA)(ZnCl2)(2.5H2O)}n, was constructed as a chiral stationary phase (CSP) via an in situ fabrication approach and used for chiral amino acid and drug analyses for the first time. The {(HQA)(ZnCl2)(2.5H2O)}n nanocrystal and the corresponding chiral stationary phase were systematically characterised using a series of analytical techniques including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, circular dichroism, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area measurements. In open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (CEC), the novel chiral column exhibited strong and broad enantioselectivity toward a variety of chiral analytes, including 19 racemic dansyl amino acids and several model chiral drugs (both acidic and basic). The chiral CEC conditions were optimised, and the enantioseparation mechanisms are discussed. This study not only introduces a new high-efficiency member of the MOF-type CSP family but also demonstrates the potential of improving the enantioselectivities of traditional chiral recognition reagents by fully using the inherent characteristics of porous organic frameworks.

Preparation of pH-responsive block copolymers for separation of cephalosporin antibiotics by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

Stimuli-responsive block copolymers have exhibited their feasibility for drug delivery and analysis of biomolecules. However, study of the electrophoretic behavior of antibiotics by open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) based on smart block copolymers coatings is still a substantial challenge. Herein, we reported an OT-CEC protocol for analysis of cephalosporin antibiotics with pH-responsive block copolymers as coatings. By using the reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfers radical polymerisation technique, the smart poly(styrene-maleic anhydride-acrylic acid) (P(St-MAn-AA)) was synthesized and subsequently chemical bonded onto the inner walls of amino-grafted capillaries. The pH induced changes in the stretch/curl states of P(St-MAn-AA) chains were used to generate an adjustable hydrophobic/hydrophilic interaction and hydrogen bonds between the polymer coatings and the analytes. The OT-CEC performance was evaluated by varying the monomer ratios, polymer coating amounts and layers, buffer concentrations and pH values. Baseline separation of the three-test antibiotics was achieved at pH 8.0. The proposed OT-CEC technique was further applied to the determination of rat serum antibiotics in the metabolic processes. The present work demonstrates an enhancement in antibiotics separation efficiency, and shows a great potential for the preparation of stimuli-responsive block copolymers coatings and in OT-CEC analysis of real samples in living bio-systems.
