Preface

The 5th International Conference on Natural Resources and Technology (ICONART) 2023 was carried out on August 29, 2023 with a main theme of “Natural Resources and Technology for Achieving Sustainable Development Goal through Academic, Industry, and Community”. and a subtheme of “Resilience and Innovation Research on Sustainable Natural Resources and Technology”. The 5th ICONART 2023 was initiated by Center of Excellence for Mangrove (Pusat Unggulan Iptek (PUI) Mangrove) was collaborated with Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), JSPS Core to Core Program, e-Asia Joint Research Program which was fully supported by Center of Excellence for Mangrove, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, Indonesia, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Republic of Indonesia (e-ASIA JRP), and LIPIHKI Universitas Sumatera Utara.The conference covered the following topics but not limited to: (1) Natural science and natural product, (2) Natural resource technology, (3) Information systems of tropical resources, (4) Tropical biodiversity, (5) Food science and food technology, and (6) Ethnobotany and ethnozoology. We conducted the hybrid conference (conducted at Hotel Grandhika, Medan for panel session (keynote speakers morning and aftrenoon session) and afternoon and evening parallel session), and along with Zoom meeting from Opening Ceremony until closing activity. Opening ceremony, welcome speech of committee, and Opening speech by the Third Vice Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara was done offline in hotel. The first Parallel presentation in the morning session was carried out offline at hotel with six rooms consisting 45 presenters and additional room 7 for online Zoom meeting with 13 presenters. The 2nd Parallel presentation (afternoon session) was performed also hybrid, offline at hotel with six rooms comprising 45 presenters and through Zoom meeting as room 7, consisting 13 presenters. The 5th ICONART 2023 organizing committee received 124 full papers through Morressier, and 116 papers have been presented through offline and online meeting.Selected papers (116 articles) will be published in IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Sciences by IOP Publishing (Bristol, UK). We believe that these open access papers will provide authors with the advantage of easy access from anywhere in the world.The organizing committee would like to convey our gratitude to Rector USU, the third Vice Rector USU, Dean of Faculty of Forestry, and Head of PUI Mangrove USU for their support and collaboration in making this conference a success. Special thanks are also extended to the entire organizing committee of the 5th ICONART 2023 for their active participation, hard effort, and collaborative teamwork in the conference’s preparation. Intersectionality and Climate Change: A Review of the Literature between 2014 and 2023

The last decade was characterized by an intensification of the debate on climate change, both in the public context and in the academic environment. The research on the potential physical impact of climate-related hazards became more sophisticated and methodologically complex. On the other hand, the literature on the societal impact of these processes expanded to incorporate different approaches, including the growing area of intersectionality and climate change studies, with roots in climate adaptation, critical climate justice, feminist literature, indigenous studies, and environmental policy, to name just a few.
 The purpose of this paper is to explore the main topics highlighted in the field of intersectionality and climate change during the last ten years to underline the theoretical and methodological contribution of this field to the broader area of climate change research. We carried out a rapid literature review by building a database consisting mainly, but not entirely, of open-access papers published in English between 2014 and 2023. We pointed out the valuable insights provided by intersectionality studies in assessing the multiple facets of human vulnerability to climate change. We also emphasized the diversity of perspectives and the transition from predominantly conceptual approaches to qualitative research aimed to make an impact at the local level. The heterogeneity of approaches is beneficial in understanding the intersectionality and climate change nexus. However, good practice guides and methodological landmarks could support more scholars in incorporating the intersectionality lens in climate change research.

Investigation of an efficient multi-modal convolutional neural network for multiple sclerosis lesion detection

In this study, an automated 2D machine learning approach for fast and precise segmentation of MS lesions from multi-modal magnetic resonance images (mmMRI) is presented. The method is based on an U-Net like convolutional neural network (CNN) for automated 2D slice-based-segmentation of brain MRI volumes. The individual modalities are encoded in separate downsampling branches without weight sharing, to leverage the specific features. Skip connections input feature maps to multi-scale feature fusion (MSFF) blocks at every decoder stage of the network. Those are followed by multi-scale feature upsampling (MSFU) blocks which use the information about lesion shape and location. The CNN is evaluated on two publicly available datasets: The ISBI 2015 longitudinal MS lesion segmentation challenge dataset containing 19 subjects and the MICCAI 2016 MSSEG challenge dataset containing 15 subjects from various scanners. The proposed multi-input 2D architecture is among the top performing approaches in the ISBI challenge, to which open-access papers are available, is able to outperform state-of-the-art 3D approaches without additional post-processing, can be adapted to other scanners quickly, is robust against scanner variability and can be deployed for inference even on a standard laptop without a dedicated GPU.

A revisit to the specification of sub-datasets and corresponding coverage timespans when using Web of Science Core Collection

Many papers used the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) as the data source. The work by Liu (2019, Scientometrics) revealed that only 48 % of such papers published in information science and library science journals during 2017–2018 specified which sub-datasets they used, and subsequently urged researchers to provide such information together with the corresponding coverage timespans to improve transparency and reproducibility. This work revisited this issue to reveal if the current condition has improved following Liu's recommendations. Using WOSCC, 934 bibliometric open-access papers published during 2020–2022 in non-information science and library science journals were evaluated. Of these 934 papers, 45.0 % specified the sub-datasets of WOSCC they used for data collection, and 4.8 % specified the coverage timespan(s) of corresponding sub-datasets or the overall dataset. There seemed to be no improvement in the specification of data source using WOSCC.

Automated Construction of a Photocatalysis Dataset for Water-Splitting Applications

We present an automatically generated dataset of 15,755 records that were extracted from 47,357 papers. These records contain water-splitting activity in the presence of certain photocatalysts, along with additional information about the chemical reaction conditions under which this activity was recorded. These conditions include any co-catalysts and additives that were present during water splitting, the length of time for which the photocatalytic experiment was conducted, and the type of light source used, including its wavelength. Despite the text extraction of such a wide range of chemical reaction attributes, the dataset afforded good precision (71.2%) and recall (36.3%). These figures-of-merit were calculated based on a random sample of open-access papers from the corpus. Mining such a complex set of attributes required the development of novel techniques in knowledge extraction and interdependency resolution, leveraging inter- and intra-sentence relations, which are also described in this paper. We present a new version (version 2.2) of the chemistry-aware text-mining toolkit ChemDataExtractor, in which these new techniques are included.

Twenty-two years of International Journal of Hospitality Management: A bibliometric analysis 2000–2021

The International Journal of Hospitality Management is one of the leading scientific journals publishing high-quality research applied to the hospitality industry since 1982. The current paper aims to provide a detailed analysis of the impact of IJHM in the last twenty-two years, using Data Science techniques, namely Data Visualization, Text Mining, and Network theory. This research is based on a comprehensive bibliometric review, including top keywords, top terms, top productive and influential authors, top productive countries/regions, researched topics, topics publication trends, most cited and influential papers, author networks, keywords networks, and affiliation networks. The analysis highlighted several interesting facts, such as (1) the impact of open-access papers not differing from regular papers, (2) sustainability and online reviews are among the most cited topics, and (3) there is an increase in the diversity of topics being published. These findings are essential for authors considering publishing in IJHM and for the journal’s editors.

Towards a sustainable and green approach of electrical and electronic waste management in Rwanda: a critical review.

Electric and electronic equipment (EEE) consumption has grown to worrisome proportions in developing countries (DCS), resulting in massive amounts of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) being produced. A diagnosis of e-waste proliferation is required for its sustainable management plan in Rwanda. This review is based on open-access papers with e-waste as a keyword, the present situation of EEE, and e-waste in Rwanda. The need for various information communication and technology (ICT) tools, such as end-user devices, cooling-system devices, network equipment, and telecommunication devices, is strongly encouraged by Rwandan national plans, which deem ICT as a vital enabler of knowledge-based economy and development. In 2014, EEE was 33,449 tonnes (t), which is expected to be 267,741 t in 2050, with a yearly increase rate of 5.95%. In this regard, out-of-date EEE is being dumped as e-waste in large quantities and at an increasing rate across Rwanda. E-waste is often disposed of in uncontrolled landfills together with other types of household waste. To address this rising threat, as well as to preserve the environment and human health, proper e-waste management involving e-waste sorting/separation from other waste streams, repairs, reuse, recycling, remanufacturing, and disposal has been proposed.

CORE: A Global Aggregation Service for Open Access Papers

This paper introduces CORE, a widely used scholarly service, which provides access to the world’s largest collection of open access research publications, acquired from a global network of repositories and journals. CORE was created with the goal of enabling text and data mining of scientific literature and thus supporting scientific discovery, but it is now used in a wide range of use cases within higher education, industry, not-for-profit organisations, as well as by the general public. Through the provided services, CORE powers innovative use cases, such as plagiarism detection, in market-leading third-party organisations. CORE has played a pivotal role in the global move towards universal open access by making scientific knowledge more easily and freely discoverable. In this paper, we describe CORE’s continuously growing dataset and the motivation behind its creation, present the challenges associated with systematically gathering research papers from thousands of data providers worldwide at scale, and introduce the novel solutions that were developed to overcome these challenges. The paper then provides an in-depth discussion of the services and tools built on top of the aggregated data and finally examines several use cases that have leveraged the CORE dataset and services.
