EXPRESS: Retailer Differentiation in Social Media: an Investigation of Firm-Generated Content on Twitter

Social media platforms have been used by firms for a variety of purposes - for building firms’ brand image, increasing customer engagement, providing customer service, among others. However, there is very little research on content strategies adopted by traditional rival firms competing on online social media platforms. This paper seeks to fill this gap by examining whether retailers, traditionally identified as close competitors, mirror this rivalry in their social media content strategies on Twitter. To this end, this study introduces a new metric for assessing competition on online social media, based on content similarity. The authors find that retailers competing closely in traditional context show greater divergence in their content strategies on social media, and firms whose social media content strategies are less similar to content strategies of their close traditional rivals benefit from higher engagement and acquire new followers faster. In examining the mechanism of the effect, the authors find that these divergent firms’ improved performance is attributable to their superior ability to leverage the higher-level affordances of Twitter as compared to their rivals. The results of this study offer valuable insights for firms seeking to distinguish their social media content from that of their competitors.

NexoNet: Blockchain Online Social Media with User-Centric Multiple Incentive Mechanism and PoAP Consensus Mechanism

Online social media (OSM) has revolutionized the manner in which communication unfolds, enabling users to spontaneously generate, disseminate, share, and aggregate multimedia data across the internet. Nevertheless, in this exchange of information, OSM platforms assume a dominant, central role, wielding excessive power. Blockchain online social media (BOSM) seeks to mitigate the drawbacks of traditional centralized OSM by leveraging the decentralized nature of blockchain technology, migrating the functionalities of social media into a decentralized realm, and positioning the users at the core of the OSM ecosystem. However, current BOSM models often rely on tokens for incentives and are hampered by the centralized, inefficient blockchain consensus mechanisms, alongside vulnerabilities such as collusion attacks. This paper introduces a novel blockchain system, NexoNet, tailored for decentralized social media, exploring the application of blockchain technology in the realm of online social media from both technical and economic perspectives. The NexoNet quantifies and evaluates user participation within the system, employing a multiple incentive mechanism to equitably distribute value created by users without the need for tokens. Furthermore, we propose the Proof-of-Active-Participation (PoAP) blockchain consensus mechanism, enabling all users to partake in the maintenance of the blockchain system, thus ensuring its security and efficiency. Theoretical analysis and simulations across various scenarios demonstrate that the NexoNet, with extensive user engagement, achieves equitable value distribution through its multiple incentive mechanism. It successfully safeguards against a spectrum of malicious attacks and attains high transaction processing efficiency. The simulation results show that NexoNet achieves an average transaction throughput of 2000 transactions per second (TPS) and a consensus delay of 2.385 s with 100 maintainers in the network. Furthermore, our tests demonstrated that even collusion with users comprising 75% of the total would only allow an additional 30 chances to propose a block. By deeply integrating user behavior with the underlying mechanisms of the blockchain system, the NexoNet fosters a user-centric blockchain social media ecosystem.

Impact of chronic pelvic pain on quality of life in diverse young adults.

To examine the relationship between quality of life (QoL) and chronic pelvic pain (CPP), including an evaluation of whether differences exist between reported races and coping mechanisms used. We used a cross-sectional survey design and analyzed data using descriptive and inferential statistics. We administered two surveys: the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (26 items) and the Impact of Female Chronic Pelvic Pain Questionnaire (8 items). We recruited young adults aged 18-25 who menstruate from college campuses in a large metropolitan area in the Midwest region of the United States, utilizing flyers, online social media platforms, and snowball sampling techniques. Out of the 585 respondents, 153 (26%) reported "yes," and 95 (16%) were "unsure" they had CPP. Those with CPP and unsure reported using various coping mechanisms for pain. They had lower scores in all four domains (physical health, psychological, social relationship, and environment) and statistically significant lower scores in three domains (physical health, social relationship, and environment) on the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF when compared to those who said "no." Respondents identifying as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color had statistically significantly lower QoL in the physical health and environment domains compared to white respondents. Young adults with CPP experience a significantly lower QoL than those without CPP, and racial differences further widen this gap. Future research should explore coping mechanisms that could benefit young adults' daily lives.

Effect of a single-session mindfulness-based intervention for reducing stress in family caregivers of people with dementia: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundCaregiver stress can pose serious health and psychological concerns, highlighting the importance of timely interventions for family caregivers of people with dementia. Single-session mindfulness-based interventions could be a promising yet under-researched approach to enhancing their mental well-being within their unpredictable, time-constrained contexts. This trial will evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of a blended mindfulness-based intervention consisting of a single session and app-based follow-up in reducing caregiver stress.Methods/DesignThe study is a single-blinded randomized controlled trial with two arms (intervention versus an education session on dementia care) and assessments at baseline, 8 weeks, and 6 months. The eligibility criteria include: family caregivers aged 18 years or older; providing care for an individual with a confirmed medical diagnosis of dementia for at least 3 months prior to recruitment, with a minimum of 4 hours of daily contact; and exhibiting a high level of caregiver stress. The intervention comprises a 90-minute group-based session with various mindfulness practices and psychoeducation. Participants will receive a self-practice toolkit to guide their practice over a duration of 8 weeks. Sharing activities will be implemented through an online social media platform. The primary outcome is perceived caregiving stress. The secondary outcomes include depressive symptoms, positive aspects of caregiving, dyadic relationship, trait mindfulness, and neuropsychiatric symptoms of care recipients. The feasibility outcomes include eligibility and enrollment, attendance, adherence to self-practice, and retention, assessed using mixed methods.DiscussionThe study will contribute to the evidence base by investigating whether a single-session mindfulness intervention is effective and feasible for reducing caregiver stress among family caregivers of people with dementia.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, NCT06346223. Countering Social Media Cybercrime Using Deep Learning: Instagram Fake Accounts Detection

An online social media platform such as Instagram has become a popular communication channel that millions of people are using today. However, this media also becomes an avenue where fake accounts are used to inflate the number of followers on a targeted account. Fake accounts tend to alter the concepts of popularity and influence on the Instagram media platform and significantly impact the economy, politics, and society, which is considered cybercrime. This paper proposes a framework to classify fake and real accounts on Instagram based on a deep learning approach called the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network. Experiments and comparisons with existing machine and deep learning frameworks demonstrate considerable improvement in the proposed framework. It achieved a detection accuracy of 97.42% and 94.21% on two publicly available Instagram datasets, with F-measure scores of 92.17% and 89.55%, respectively. Further experiments on the Twitter dataset reveal the effectiveness of the proposed framework by achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 99.42%.

Ontology-Based Data Collection for a Hybrid Outbreak Detection Method Using Social Media.

Given the persistent global challenge presented by rapidly spreading diseases, as evidenced notably by the widespread impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on both human health and economies worldwide, the necessity of developing effective infectious disease prediction models has become of utmost importance. In this context, the utilization of online social media platforms as valuable tools in healthcare settings has gained prominence, offering direct avenues for disseminating critical health information to the public in a timely and accessible manner. Propelled by the ubiquitous accessibility of the internet through computers and mobile devices, these platforms promise to revolutionize traditional detection methods, providing more immediate and reliable epidemiological insights. Leveraging this paradigm shift, our proposed framework harnesses Twitter data associated with infectious disease symptoms, employing ontology to identify and curate relevant tweets. Central to our methodology is a hybrid model that integrates XGBoost and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) architectures. The integration of XGBoost addresses the challenge of handling small dataset sizes, inherent during outbreaks due to limited time series data. XGBoost serves as a cornerstone for minimizing the loss function and identifying optimal features from our multivariate time series data. Subsequently, the combined dataset, comprising original features and predicted values by XGBoost, is channeled into the BiLSTM for further processing. Through extensive experimentation with a dataset spanning multiple infectious disease outbreaks, our hybrid model demonstrates superior predictive performance compared to state-of-the-art and baseline models. By enhancing forecasting accuracy and outbreak tracking capabilities, our model offers promising prospects for assisting health authorities in mitigating fatalities and proactively preparing for potential outbreaks.

Non-equilibrium physics of multi-species assembly applied to fibrils inhibition in biomolecular condensates and growth of online distrust

Self-assembly is a key process in living systems—from the microscopic biological level (e.g. assembly of proteins into fibrils within biomolecular condensates in a human cell) through to the macroscopic societal level (e.g. assembly of humans into common-interest communities across online social media platforms). The components in such systems (e.g. macromolecules, humans) are highly diverse, and so are the self-assembled structures that they form. However, there is no simple theory of how such structures assemble from a multi-species pool of components. Here we provide a very simple model which trades myriad chemical and human details for a transparent analysis, and yields results in good agreement with recent empirical data. It reveals a new inhibitory role for biomolecular condensates in the formation of dangerous amyloid fibrils, as well as a kinetic explanation of why so many diverse distrust movements are now emerging across social media. The nonlinear dependencies that we uncover suggest new real-world control strategies for such multi-species assembly.

Legendary fermented herbs: an ethnobotanical study of the traditional fermentation starter of the Chuanqing people in Northwestern Guizhou, China

BackgroundPlants that contain brewing microorganisms are used in traditional fermentation starters, which are an essential part of local diet, nutrition, life, and health. Regionally, the plant species used and the microorganisms included in traditional fermentation starters are diverse, endowing local fermented drinks with different flavors and health benefits. However, related traditional knowledge has been scarcely documented or revealed.MethodsAn ethnobotanical survey was conducted in five towns of Nayong County in northwestern Guizhou, China. Snowball sampling, semi-structured interviews, free lists, and participatory observation were used to collect information on Jiuqu Plants (JPs) and jiuqu-making techniques. The PacBio platform was used to study the microbial community structure and diversity in the Chuanqing people’s jiuqu.ResultsIn total, 225 informants were interviewed, including 116 who provided plants and technological processes for making Chinese baijiu jiuqu (CBJ) and 139 who provided information about making fermented glutinous rice jiuqu (FGRJ). This study found that older people have more abundant knowledge about CBJ plants. Poaceae was found to be the dominant family used in making CBJ and FGRJ (7 species each). Compared to individual plant parts, the whole plant is most commonly used in two kinds of jiuqu (19.5% in CBJ and 22.6% in FGRJ). The Chuanqing people’s jiuqu is used to treat dietary stagnation and indigestion. The highest relative frequency of citation of the CBJ plant was Ficus tikoua Bureau, and the counterpart of the FGRJ plant was Buddleja macrostachya Benth. The dominant bacterial species in jiuqu were Gluconobacter japonicus (YQ1, YQ4) and Pediococcus pentosaceus (YQ2, YQ3), and the dominant fungal species was Rhizopus oryzae.ConclusionFor the first time, this study documents the unique traditional jiuqu knowledge and reveals the microbial mystery behind the FGRJ of the Chuanqing people.Therefore, this study encourages the use of online social media platforms in order to spread Jiuqu culture, the use of the new media wave in order to create multimedia databases, and also suggests that local communities should develop preservation intervention programs, in addition to nurturing the inheritors in order to prevent the disappearance of traditional Jiuqu knowledge. This research contributes to the conservation and demystification of the traditional jiuqu knowledge of the Chuanqing people and lays the foundation for further research on its microbiology, nutrition, and metabolomics.

Register of male and female Arabic language teachers on YouTube channels: A gender analysis in sociolinguistics

Language and gender have a strong connection, especially in a social context. This study examines register in Arabic by looking at the language used by male and female teachers who utilize the YouTube media platform to provide basic Arabic tutorials. From these videos, the language characteristics of male and female Arabic language teachers can be observed, in terms of gender. In general, this study investigates the registers of male and female Arabic language teachers. Specifically, it elaborates on the significant differences between the language used by male and female Arabic language teachers based on a register analysis. The research question is thus divided into two: (1) what is the typical character of male teachers and female teachers of Arabic on YouTube channels; (2) how do male and female Arabic teachers use register on YouTube channels. The method used in this research can be divided into three stages. The first stage was the data collection, which was carried out by viewing and observing Arabic language learning videos uploaded onto YouTube channels by male and female teachers. The second stage was the data analysis, which used the model of Miles and Huberman, consisting of data reduction, data display and data conclusion. The final stage was the reporting of the results, using illustrative quotes in the form of descriptions and narratives related to the language registers of male and female teachers in terms of a sociolinguistic study. The gender-based language characteristics can be identified from aspects of gesture, word choice, greeting pronunciation and the mention of personal names. This research contributes to the development of the study of language learning in terms of gender based on an online social media platform.

Prescription and nonprescription drug misuse and abuse in community pharmacies in Iraq: a cross-sectional survey.

There is little known regarding prescription and nonprescription medicine nonmedical use (abuse and misuse) in Iraq, with limited treatment. Pharmacists could be a valuable source of information in the absence of any national monitoring system. This study aimed to explore Iraqi community pharmacists' perspectives on prescription and nonprescription medicine abuse/misuse, including motives for use and how often they encounter people whom they think are misusing or abusing medicines. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken between November 2020 and February 2021. Community pharmacists in Iraq were asked to complete a prepiloted self-administered questionnaire, distributed through online social media platforms. 300 pharmacists completed the questionnaire. The most commonly reported nonprescription drugs suspected of abuse/misuse were cough and cold medications (n = 80, 26.6%), topical corticosteroids (n = 54, 17.9%), and allergy products (n = 33, 11%). The most common reported prescription drugs suspected of abuse/misuse were systemic antibiotics (n = 111, 36.9%), gabapentinoids (n = 56, 18.6%), and moderate-weak opioids (n = 34, 11.3%). The most commonly method used by pharmacists to limit access to such drugs was responding that the requested medication was unavailable (n = 273, 51.7%), followed by advising on risks (n = 152, 33.2%). Prescription/nonprescription medicine abuse and misuse are suspected in community pharmacies in Iraq. Current methods for controlling the problem are likely to be ineffective in the absence of prescription drug enforcement. Pharmacists could have a more proactive role in managing this issue, networking with other pharmacists, and referring suspected users to support.

How can we use distance education to teach medicine in conflict-affected countries?

ABSTRACT Rates of global conflict have increased by over 40% from 2020 to 2023, increasing the demands on healthcare systems and impacting healthcare training, education and workforce. There is a need for innovative educational support from the international community. Distance education is a sustainable avenue that is not as contingent on travel, political, or financial restrictions. We sought to undertake a preliminary scoping exercise of the issues involved in delivering distance medical teaching to conflict zones, by reviewing examples in the literature and interviewing key stakeholders in this field. We found that there was need and scope to deliver specific, case-based, non-practical teaching, and to re-connect medical personnel with the international community and research. We propose recommendations to achieve this: directing purpose according to learner needs, evaluations and care outcomes; maintaining patient confidentiality and anonymity; supplementing, rather than undermining, existing educational infrastructures; co-ordinating with relevant stakeholders and expatriates, whilst maintaining neutrality; and consider the use of pre-existing, low-cost online scripts and social media platforms, as well as non-live, low-bandwidth modes of technology.

In addition, the function of regulatory bodies in accommodating the swift progression of technological innovation to safeguard investors' interests and maintain market integrity is scrutinised. The study offers useful information on prospective trends and obstacles in technology-driven stock market trading for retail investors by examining scholarly literature and industry reports. This underscores the importance for investors to maintain a state of alertness to minimise potential hazards linked to their dependence on technological advances while simultaneously leveraging the prospects offered by developments in trading technology.

Improving the application and assessment experiences of special constable candidates in England and Wales

PurposeThis paper proposes a set of recommendations based upon the limitations found with the application and assessment process to become a Special Constable (SC) with one of the 43 police forces in England and Wales.Design/methodology/approachParticipants were recruited via online social media platforms Twitter and LinkedIn, as well as personal networks and the study was geared towards both respondents who had completed the whole of the application and assessment process, as well as those who may have withdrawn at a particular point or who failed an element of the assessment.FindingsThis study yielded several key findings. First, some respondents had limited to no knowledge of the role of the Special Constable, nor of the depth of police work that would be expected of them. Secondly, respondents indicated that they would have benefited from support during the application and assessment process, specifying the advantages that could be derived from a variety of sources such as local force input and workshop sessions. Finally, respondents stated that poor communication from recruiting teams impacted their experience of applying to the Special Constable programmes, causing them to rethink their decision to join.Originality/valueThis research proposes that a far greater input from serving Special Constables during the application and assessment process is key to improving the experiences of candidates, and to their chances of success with the programme.

2328 Knowledge of dying in place and preferences for place of death among older adults in Hong Kong

Abstract Introduction The preference for place of death and the concept of dying in place have been subjects of debate in numerous jurisdictions. Despite the growing prevalence of ageing populations and the increasing demand for dying in place, there is a limited body of literature exploring older adults’ knowledge of dying in place and their preferences for the place of death. In Hong Kong, there are ongoing legislative efforts to revise the policy on dying in place. This study aims to investigate the knowledge of dying in place and the preferences for the place of death among older adults in Hong Kong. Methods This cross-sectional study recruited 503 older adults. A questionnaire was disseminated through online social media platforms and face-to-face interview. ANOVA was conducted to compare the differences in knowledge scores among participants with varying preferences for the place of death. Results Participants demonstrated a sub-optimal knowledge level (mean = 3.55; range 0–8). Notably, 54.7% of participants were unaware of the existing law that regulates dying in place in Hong Kong, and 43.5% did not know about the availability of community resources to support patients who choose to die at home. A greater number of participants (55.5%) preferred to die at home. Other preferences included hospital (18.9%), hospice (17.1%), and care home (8.5%). Participants who preferred to die at home exhibited a higher knowledge score (mean 3.84) compared to those who preferred to die in hospital (mean = 2.79) (F = 5.323, p = 0.001). Conclusions The findings of this study provide insights that can inform the revision of current policies, the enhancement of community resources supporting dying in place, and the strengthening of life and death education targeted at older adults. LEAN SIX SIGMA APPROACH FOR SIMULTANEOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT OF COURSES IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

The purpose of this study is to assess whether Lean Six Sigma can improve the quality of teaching-learning processes in higher educational institutions during the Covid-19 pandemic. The integration of e-learning technologies with lean six sigma (LSS). DMAIC stands for five phases of sig sigma project: define, measure, analyze, improve, and control was applied to implement quality assurance in the teaching-learning process. Action research was adopted in 30 courses of a particular engineering programme. The methodology was applied as a course improvement tool, and the challenges encountered during the implementation were also studied. The LSS DMAIC methodology could successfully improve the quality of various courses simultaneously through online mode during the Covid-19 pandemic. The adopted methodology could assist in effectively responding during the present stage of uncertainty and provide stakeholders with guidelines to deal with the post-pandemic era. In terms of practical implications, this study discusses a new approach to improving the quality of the teaching-learning process in higher educational institutions. The LSS DMAIC is applied with the help of online educational and social media platforms for the simultaneous improvement of courses in a particular engineering programme.

Tree-Climbing Behavior of a Forest-Dwelling Ungulate: The Formosan Serow.

Ungulates are terrestrial herbivores, basically adapted to running fast on the ground; tree-climbing behavior has been reported only in seven species, and five of them live in open habitats (Capra hircus, C. aegagrus, C. falconeri, C. cylindricornis, Oreotragus oreotragus). Tree-climbing behavior may also be evolved in ungulates inhabiting dense forests with abundant trees; however, this has rarely been reported in such species (Moschus leucogaster, M. moschiferus), probably due to the difficulty of observing in the wild. The numerous publicly available records in social networks hold potentially valuable information on the atypical behaviors of wild ungulates. Here, we explored the tree-climbing behavior of a forest-dwelling ungulate, the Formosan serow in Taiwan, a subtropical island, by extracting information from online social media platforms. We researched images and videos of Formosan serows through Facebook and YouTube and collected a total of 15 tree-climbing events. In these materials, Formosan serows climbed 10 tree species, including evergreen coniferous and broad-leaved trees, and a variety of parts, ranging in height from 0.6 to 4 m, and from branches of shrubs to trunks of tall trees. Tree-climbing behavior was recorded throughout Taiwan and from lowlands to subalpine zones, suggesting that tree climbing may be a common behavior in this species. Foraging while climbing trees was frequently observed (53.3%), suggesting that the purpose or benefit for climbing is to obtain additional food other than plants growing near the ground surface. In contrast to other tree-climbing ungulates, Formosan serows climbed trees not only in winter, but also in other seasons, when food is relatively abundant. This is the first scientific report of tree-climbing behavior in the Formosan serow that is typically a forest dweller.

Mutual Expected Rationality in Online Sharing: An Agent-Based Model Study

AbstractModels of content-sharing behavior on online social media platforms typically represent content spread as a diffusion process modeled on contagious diseases; users’ behavior is modeled with single-agent decision theory. However, social media platforms are interactive spaces where users care about reactions to, and further spread of, the content they post. Thus, social media interaction falls under the intended use cases for game theory. In contrast to existing models leaving strategic reasoning out, we capture agents’ social media decisions within a cognitive hierarchy framework, which can be interpreted as making formally precise how agents make strategic choices based on mutual expectations of rationality. Analytically, we identify limit cases in which a platform can be swamped with content that no agents personally like but all expect to elicit reactions (think obvious fake-news). We then use agent-based simulations to show that a range of more realistic cases give rise to similar outcomes.

Making an Influence: Sponsorship and Creolization on Social Media

AbstractThe growing presence and impact of predominantly female online influencers suggests the proliferation of a cultural phenomenon that characterizes the social aspects of our digital lives. Working with the notion of gender and maker literacies, this paper shines light on newer forms of making practices by looking at influencer cultures of five popular online social media platforms. Situating the research in a Caribbean context, this paper examines the “influencer culture” by looking at the platformized literacy practices of four Caribbean female influencers and using the concepts of literacy sponsorship and creolization as lenses through which to view the interrelationships and accompanying practices between the influencers and their local and global followers. The paper argues that social media platforms are strategically curated digital‐maker spaces that influencers use to shift and change literacy practices and perspectives related to gender, language, and culture. Findings from this qualitative study suggest that these influencers' sponsorship of creolized literacies is reflected in their power to enact social change and transformation through advocacy, consciousness, and community‐building. The paper concludes by considering the potential for such social actors and their digital‐making practices to influence our contemporary global sociocultural and educational landscapes.

SCROLLING AND SUSTAINED ATTENTION: HOW SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCE SUSTAINED ATTENTION OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Social media is one of the powerful tools for connecting with people and sharing ideas and information. The utilization of online social media platforms for connecting with family, relatives, peers, colleagues, and others is encompassed within the concept of social networking. These platforms, which serve both social and business functions, are accessible through a range of websites. (Dr. Sadaf Mustafa, 2018) Valuable information is provided to users by social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and LinkedIn etc. But it diverts students from their studies. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, heightened levels of time are being dedicated by students to social media platforms. Because it provides additional opportunities for connecting with other people. In this study, the researcher analysed the impact of social site on sustained attention with respect to gender and geographical area. The study, which included 105 participants, entailed the development of a questionnaire aimed at investigating the influence of various elements of social media on the capacity of school students to sustain their attention. It was found that students' sustained attention is negatively affected by social media, and individuals from diverse genders and geographical areas engage with social media for a variety of purposes.
