Changes to business faculty perceived skills with online teaching tools and educational practices: The pandemic effect

AbstractIn the spring of 2020, universities worldwide closed their campuses and transitioned their face‐to‐face courses to remote teaching with educational technologies due to the COVID‐19 pandemic. This unprecedented transition to online instruction created a unique learning environment for students and faculty. Our case‐based, qualitative study explores the perceived skill level changes of professors who implemented (with minimal training) online educational technologies to deliver business courses at a business school in the southwest United States. Business faculty completed a Likert‐scale survey instrument that used the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) teacher competency framework, which includes digitally communicating with students, delivering asynchronous material, delivering synchronous classes, using the learning management system, and providing digital assessments and feedback (2018). Study outcomes indicate that instructors’ perceived skill sets in most topics grew due to the adoption of online educational technologies at the onset of the pandemic. Further study might focus on determining the long‐term implications of the growing integration of educational technology on business faculty instruction in both online and face‐to‐face classrooms.

A bibliometric performance analysis of publication productivity within pedagogy, andragogy, and heutagogy continuum: Outcomes of SciVal analytics

The pedagogy, andragogy, and heutagogy (PAH) continuum have been widely endorsed within higher education and online learning over the years. Thus, the evaluation of research productivity has become relevant due to the emerging development of the PAH continuum as a theoretical framework. This paper aims to explore the research productivity within the PAH continuum by performing a bibliometric performance analysis. An iterative search strategy was performed to identify PAH authors and then investigate their research productivity over a 5-year period (2017–2022) using the SciVal analytics instrument by Elsevier. Drawing upon the results from multiple bibliometric analyses, the study explores publication productivity specifically in relation to the PAH continuum. This study revealed that distance education, learning, teaching, professional development, and lifelong learning have been the most prominent research areas within the PAH continuum. Within that, related topics were identified, including online learning, mobile learning, e-learning, and educational technology.

INTEGRATING OPEN DISTANCE LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS AS A TRANSFORMATIVE SHIFT IN TEACHING AND LEARNING

Background and Purpose: The threat brought about by Coronavirus or Covid-19 had made a huge impact not only on the economic, tourism, and health sectors, but it also hardly hit the education system of the world at large. Specifically, this pandemic crisis has caused higher education institutions (HEIs) to abruptly shift to open distance learning (ODL) as a response to the call for continued education despite the global health threat.
 
 Methodology: Using quantitative approach and purposive sampling that led to soliciting good responses from 320 respondents from both private and public HEIs in Melaka, this study explains the reality, the readiness and willingness of learners and lecturers have experienced in ODL.
 
 Findings: Findings indicate that technology use in ODL teaching and learning offers a lot of opportunities for both learners and lecturers. The instructors and learners perceived that ODL is effective with the use of technology merging the old and the new. Three aspects were indicated from this study namely 1) interaction between learners or among themselves as peers and 2) technical support and 3) pedagogical demands. Nonetheless, there were some challenges faced by both lecturers and learners such as; unreliable internet access, high costs associated with bandwidth, technophobia and inadequate pedagogical skills of online lecturers found from this study too.
 
 Contributions: Thus, it is deemed important to identify and understand learners’ experiences in an online education technology course facilitated through various digital platforms. It is time we accept blended learning if not ODL. Blended learning has grown in use across HEIs to replace traditional classroom learning.

Assessment and evaluation of online education and virtual simulation technology in dental education: a cross-sectional survey.

The global outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has led medical universities in China to conduct online teaching. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a blended learning approach that combines online teaching and virtual reality technology in dental education and to evaluate the acceptance of the blended learning approach among dental teachers and students. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist was followed in this study. A total of 157 students' perspectives on online and virtual reality technology education and 54 teachers' opinions on online teaching were collected via questionnaires. Additionally, 101 students in the 2015-year group received the traditional teaching method (TT group), while 97 students in the 2017-year group received blended learning combining online teaching and virtual reality technology (BL group). The graduation examination results of students in the two groups were compared. The questionnaire results showed that most students were satisfied with the online course and the virtual simulation platform teaching, while teachers held conservative and neutral attitudes toward online teaching. Although the theoretical score of the BL group on the final exam was greater than that of the TT group, there was no significant difference between the two groups (P = 0.805). The skill operation score of the BL group on the final exam was significantly lower than that of the TT group (P = 0.004). The overall score of the BL group was lower than that of the TT group (P = 0.018), but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.112). The blended learning approach combining online teaching and virtual reality technology plays a positive role in students' learning and is useful and effective in dental education.

Faculty Perceptions of Online Instruction and Educational Technology in Higher Education

The purpose of this research was to obtain faculty perceptions of online instruction and educational technology in higher education. Data was collected from eight participants through interviews and open-ended questions at a higher education institution. Results showed that faculty consider that online instruction is only possible for certain programs and that it’s only for certain student populations. In addition, faculty perceive online learning environments as a repository for class information and serve as a communication medium between instructor and student. Furthermore, faculty believe that there is no substitution for traditional teaching methods regardless of the educational technology available. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.

Digital Florilegium

This lesson explains an approach to engaging students in close reading of challenging texts. It introduces florilegium, an ancient reading practice utilized by copyists in medieval European monasteries. This lesson’s approach to florilegium took a digital twist: rather than hand-writing snippets of text into a copybook as medieval monks might, we used a Google form to capture the whole class’s snippets from a shared reading. These text snippets became a shared digital repository that students could use to engage the text in a variety of interactive, creative ways. In the instance described in this article, the students were graduate students taking an online Educational Technology course, but the practice is flexible and could be adapted for use in many different content areas and grade levels.

Barriers to the Effective Use of Technology in Higher Education Institutions in Yemen: A Case Study of Engineering Colleges

Technology promises to shape new education systems with modern features that accommodate the shortcomings of traditional systems. This study aims to answer these questions: Are Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Yemen, Taiz state, prepared to accept technology-based education (TBE) and what are the main challenges for that? 5-point Likert scale questionnaires targeted 221 female engineering students and 87 faculty members from public and private universities in Taiz state, while the survey data were statistically analyzed using SPSS software 23. The study examined many related variables such as skills to use and availability of technology devices, having personal laptops or smartphones, social beliefs, students' self-motivation, and institutions' vision and infrastructures. The results display that students exhibit better involvement with TBE than faculty members, while students' low income and social barriers represent a solid obstruction to the employment of online and blended education technologies in Yemen. The results also indicate that about 30% of the participant in Yemen did not have personal laptops. Besides, HEIs' infrastructure, such as smart classrooms, electricity, Internet, administrative structure, and scientific research incentives suggest that universities are incompatible with TBE. Finally, this study addressed the impact of cost-free social media platforms in enhancing students’ academic attainments. implications for government, HEIs, faculty members, and students were recorded.

Facilitators and Barriers to Online Teaching and Educational Technology Use by University Lecturers during COVID-19: A Systematic Review of Qualitative Evidence

This systematic review of qualitative evidence contributes to the understanding of individual factors that influenced Emergency Remote Teaching and the use of educational technology by lecturers during the COVID-19 pandemic. A coding scheme aimed at identifying these key factors was developed using a comprehensive theoretical framework based on the model of triadic reciprocity. A narrative synthesis of 49 studies revealed that lecturers had unique starting points for the transition, which were influenced by factors such as prior experience with educational technology and online teaching, their attitudes and beliefs towards it, and their technological knowledge. Despite varying levels of preparedness and different attitudes, lecturers were able to leverage their pedagogical knowledge, adaptability, and motivation to continue education under extraordinary circumstances. On the other hand, a lack of experience in educational technology integration, negative attitudes and beliefs towards it, and insufficient technological knowledge hindered the transition to Emergency Remote Teaching. Lecturers therefore actively sought out appropriate educational technologies that would cater to their needs and those of their students. The initial autodidactic effort required that lecturers learn new technologies, along with how to effectively use them for teaching. A significant proportion of the use of educational technology was aimed at augmenting conventional teaching practices and providing students with an interactive learning environment, in terms of social embeddedness and personalized learning pathways. However, many lecturers attempted to replicate the pre-pandemic classroom in an online setting by substituting conventional teaching practices in an online classroom. This systematic review suggests the need to implement institutional onboarding measures for lecturers to level the “unique starting points” to ensure technology-enhanced learning in emergencies. This can be achieved by equipping lecturers with digital competence and pedagogical knowledge and by fostering self-efficacy, thus preparing them for future scenarios that require rapid adaptation and for digital transformation in general.

Conceptions of Time in Educational Technology

The adoption of technology-enhanced online learning platforms is transforming teaching and learning practices within and outside the university. As online learning and educational technology become increasingly ubiquitous, there is a need for equity-minded scholarship attending to the social, cultural, and political implications of the technology sustaining online learning. While prior literature has made important strides framing education technology within conversations of equity and justice, there is a lack of empirical research analyzing marketing material of education technology. This presents a significant gap in understanding for education researchers, as marketing material plays a significant role in shaping public perceptions of technology, and can be widely read among students, instructors, and university stakeholders before directly engaging with the tool. Given recent scholarly interest in the ways subjective understandings of temporality are implicated in learning design, the present study connects burgeoning interest in temporality towards corporate marketing material of learning design. Drawing on artifact analysis methods, we analyzed blog posts from Coursera and customer success stories from Microsoft that describe how their products are designed to support online learning. Our research questions include: (1) How does marketing material from two education technology companies shape subjective understandings of temporality in online learning? (2) How can these temporal representations be leveraged to promote equity-oriented pedagogical design? Results from our analysis show how time is constituted as an efficient and agentic resource, and as an orientation towards future careers. We discuss how these findings have implications for equity-oriented pedagogical design by linking conceptions of time to neoliberalism and humanization.

The impact of an online technology course on pre-service teachers’ technological knowledge: Strategies and design

This study investigated how pre-service teachers’ technology integration knowledge changed as a result of participating in an online educational technology course for a semester in the Fall of 2020 and the Spring of 2021. The pre-service teachers’ technology integration knowledge development was assessed through their self-reported technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK). A total of 194 participants completed a validated TPACK pre- and post-test survey. The results of multilevel modeling analysis suggested that the participants had significant gains in all TPACK domains. Strategies used in designing the online educational technology course were examined for their contribution to pre-service teachers’ TPACK development. Educational technology-based course included activities that facilitated the integration of the components of TPACK framework through peer interactions, lesson planning, and peer feedback. The findings have implications for future research and provide guidance for the design of effective online learning environments to improve pre-service teachers’ technology integration knowledge.

Authenticity detection of eye images using deep learning technology in online exams

The use of online education technologies is one of the most effective ways to achieve the universal goal of quality education throughout life for the sustainable development of UNESCO. During the writing of the article, the features that have appread in the field of application of online exam technologies will be described. The existing forms, methods and tools for conducting the exam in an online format, their potential and risks are analyzed. Attention is drawn to the fact that the methods and tools used for conducting online control have disadvantages, such as significant costs in organizing proctoring and difficulties in assessing one of the student’s key competencies, namely, readiness to use systematized theoretical and practical knowledge to formulate and solve research problems. This research introduces an innovative proctoring system that harnesses deep learning techniques, specifically the Yolo algorithm. The primary objective of this system is to accurately detect the eyes of the exam-taker by utilizing a standard web camera as the sole input source. The obtained results from the deep learning model are subsequently subjected to processing through the Cascaded Haar Classifier to yield a definitive outcome. The proposed approach demonstrates considerable proficiency in discriminating between authentic exam-takers and static images, achieving a notable level of accuracy. Leveraging the capabilities of deep learning in conjunction with the cascaded classifier enables real-time eye detection and localization within images or video frames, thereby establishing the proctoring system as a reliable and effective solution for ensuring academic integrity during online examinations.

Modern medical schools curricula: Necessary innovations and priorities for change.

Medical schools' curricula have expanded over the decades to incorporate important new medical breakthroughs and discoveries. Their current focus and overall structures remain, however, stubbornly captive of early 20th-century thinking, with changes having been undertaken in a piecemeal fashion. Indeed, since the notable Flexner reform in 1910, medical schools' study plans have suffered successive and typically always partial adjustments which have failed to keep up with scientific, technological and sociological change. This difficulty may be attributable to the well-known conservatism of medical schools, where updating study plans is a process that invariably encounters numerous barriers to change. These observations were afforded detailed attention some 15 years ago when de Oliveira wrote: 'it is now perfectly demonstrated that public medical schools have not been able to adapt their operation in depth and in due time to the new demands of teaching dictated by an explosive scientific and technological development'. Recent advances in communication and information technologies, as well as the introduction of new pedagogical techniques, have the potential to bring significant benefits to medical practice and healthcare systems, but these have not in the main become properly taught and utilized. The proposition that healthcare is evolving from reactive disease care to care that is predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory was initially regarded as highly speculative, yet systems approaches to biology and medicine are now beginning to provide experience of both health and disease at the molecular, cellular and organ levels. Medicine is a broad scientific field. In contrast to the 19th century, current medical 'sectarianism' is a positive by-product of rapid and gratifying medical progress, and the multiplicity of new models means that the lines of evidence legitimately bearing on practice and health policymaking are already highly diverse and likely to become ever more variegated over time. Put simply, most sound decisions, by definition, will be evidence-informed and not evidence-based, where divergence may be as informative as convergence. Here, the most enduring lesson of history is, perhaps, that clinical medicine is constantly rediscovering its humanistic core. Complexities create opportunities for innovation. In innovative environments, high-performing organizations are finding ways to create a culture that supports a diverse workforce preparing to deliver different models of care, with direct implications for excellence of patient experience and strong repercussions for medical education. The COVID-19 crisis saw major increases in the use of telemedicine, virtual office visits and other forms of online contact, and these are likely to increase considerably. This particular transformation will not be easy or comfortable to make. But reconfiguration of medical education seems inevitable, fuelled by online educational technology and the need to transform clinical training to more outpatient settings with promotion based on competency and person-centeredness, not simply time. As we prepare to enter 2024, this is an exciting time to be working in healthcare. We have more evidence than ever about how to provide high quality, person-centered care, and to keep patients safe. Shame on us if there is any hesitation about applying this knowledge to make the healthcare experience better for patients and providers. Embracing change and making continuous improvements are essential and urgent priorities for medicine and healthcare and, as we describe in the current article, will become more and more indispensably important in our rapidly changing world.

Virtual reality platforms to support decision-making in multilevel educational systems

The authors endeavor to develop an approach toward designing academic digital shadows and twins for efficient management of educational processes in training professionals in the real-time mode, as well as for strategic and immediate decisions. They suggest a model for direct management of multilevel educational processes and development of individual educational trajectories (IET) through using digital twins (DT) within the educational process in the years 3–4, master’s programs, and within the framework of continuing professional education. The general concept of DT application in educational organization is developed, i. e. student-oriented model with IET as a core. The authors also examine IET as an instrument of mobile and rapid re-engineering of educational processes scaled t o t he a ctual n eeds o f t he e conomy a nd e mployers’ c urrent d emands; as well as general approaches to IET support, in particular, through online educational technologies and virtual educational platforms and resources. The virtual reality platforms may be used in distance learning when developing IET in multilevel educational systems. The authors compare several virtual reality platforms, metauniverses, their tools and applications in educational processes.

The relevance of the research is due to the increasing popularity of online learning and the lack of scientifically based criteria for analysing and designing new programs. The article provides an overview of international research and teaching practices on the following topics: the impact of Internet use on the mental development and academic results of children aged 5-12 years; the relationship between the use of various digital learning tools and the formation of various components of cognitive and communication development; the influence of the digital component of learning on students ' academic achievements; teaching children the basics of programming in order to form their computational thinking. In this study, the numbers of paperes related to the digital transformation of preschool and primary education were identified. The number of such articles for Scopus was 1709, and for Web of Science 984. Term maps were visualized in the period 2000–2020. The three clusters for Web of Science relate to the Internet, gaming learning applications, and computational thinking. After that, we analysed 60 sources that most fully represent these three clusters. The paper draws the following conclusions: to date, most studies are based on comparing the significance of the psychological and pedagogical effect of traditional training and education with the active use of digital technologies. There are few studies comparing different types of digital environments and online educational technologies; conflicting data on the impact of digital media and online technology on educational outcomes suggests that development of psycho-pedagogical typology of mechanisms for online learning that would take into account the peculiarities of interaction between child, teacher and digital environments, is urgently relevant; today, we have a fairly large array of data on the positive impact of digital gaming environments on the formation of creative abilities.

Unicorn Start-Up in India: Byju’s - An Economic Analysis

With digital penetration, EdTech start-ups are growing tremendously. One of the leading top-position EdTech start-ups is Byju’s which emerged during the period of the Covid era, there were the lockdown days the need for Byju’s services was immense. In the world, India (115 unicorns) is the largest unicorn start-up ecosystem which crossed the hundredth unicorn mark in 2022 after the USA (661 unicorns) and China (312 unicorns). Byju’s unicorn Start-up is the leading one among all the EdTech start-ups in India. The start-up easily achieve the unicorn status in the pandemic era as the online education technology needed by all the students from schools, colleges, and universities. In a post-pandemic world, the enterprise optimised the productivity of the employees to maximise profitability. Byju’s is an EdTech start-up that has unicorn status, extended not only in India but also in various countries. Since it was founded in 2011, many strategies followed to come up as the leading company in India. Recent data says, Byju’s had a global rank of 14, and it is valued at US $ 22 billion, with funding about $800 million. Byju’s attains a profitable EdTech unicorn start-up. As of April 2023, this giant EdTech start-up has over 150 million student registrations. An attempt was taken to analyse the role of Byju’s EdTech start-up in economic growth, and how it tackles the challenges of the present era.

Willingness of university students to continue using e-Learning platforms after compelled adoption of technology: Test of an extended UTAUT model.

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted the adoption of an e-Learning pedagogy. This forced teachers and students to shift to online learning and thus was compelled to adopt online educational technology. Educational institutes have been facing challenges like insufficient infrastructure and a shortage of quality teachers. Online learning can help to address these challenges as online classes can accommodate more students. However, before implementing e-Learning technology management of institutes wants to be sure whether students will adopt new technology. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to unveil which factors are important to adopt new technology if implemented mandatorily. We tested the most popular technology acceptance model the UTAUT to understand students' intentions to continue using the e-Learning system in a mandatory environment. The study used a quantitative approach of research. The participants for this study were selected from a private university in India. The questionnaire for the study was adapted from previous studies. The survey was conducted by sharing an online link while students were attending classes online during the pandemic. Thus, the study utilized a convenience sampling technique. The data were analyzed using structural equation modelling. The findings revealed that the UTAUT model can partially explain the forceful adoption of technology. The study found 'Performance expectancy' and the 'availability of resources' as significant indicators of 'intention for continued usage'. This study recommends educational institutes should ensure students attain academic goals by using e-Learning platforms and ensuring the availability of essential resources to use the e-Learning technology.

The role of a teacher in modern music education: can a student learn music with the help of modernized online educational technologies without teachers?

Music education is aimed at the development of musical abilities, emotionality during the performance of musical compositions, and all-round development. The aim of the article is to determine the possibilities of schoolchildren obtaining musical knowledge with the help of modernized online technologies, as well as to determine the importance of a teacher in modern music education. The indicators were determined by a questionnaire, the data collection for which was done using a Likert scale. Initially, the paper identified approaches to teaching students prior to the study. The results showed that more emphasis was placed on the use of book-based theoretical materials (46%), which allowed only 21% of students to achieve a high level of knowledge. The use of information technology was common among 9% of students, which allowed 76% of students to achieve high results, which is based on acquiring knowledge in a shorter time. The authors concluded that it is necessary to provide improved stages of learning, which will expand the use of modernized technology. Work on the theoretical basics of piano playing can be implemented with the Vivace app; Flow app helps one to work on sound features; Functional Ear Trainer app is about developing rhythm and hearing; and Chordana Play app helps one to work on a piece of music. After training, by calculating the coefficient of effectiveness, it was found that students in group #1 (0.791), who mastered the skills of playing the piano according to the developed training stages and without a teacher, showed the quality of acquired knowledge lower than students in group #2 (0.853), who were trained under the direct influence of a teacher. The data obtained confirm the high quality of learning in the groups, as the educational process was built with the correct distribution of workload and providing opportunities for the development of musical skills. It is established that the students of group 1 to a greater extent developed independence (29%), and group 2 was good at the accuracy of musical tasks' sequence (28%). The practical significance of the work is based on the possibility of transforming the music learning system with the help of modern technology. Prospects for the study can be based on a comparison of the quality of teaching the piano and vocal training, excluding the participation of a teacher in the learning process.

TRENDS IN TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED ONLINE LEARNING FOR LOW ACHIEVERS IN INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMMING: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

Technology-enhanced online learning (tel) has been widely utilized in facilitating teaching and learning in higher academic institutions. although exhaustive studies have been done in investigating the usage and effectiveness of tel in programming education, there is still insufficiency of studies being done in utilization of tel in introductory programming specifically for low achievers who often faced with learning difficulties such as lack of motivation and interests, lack of problem-solving skills and logical thinking and the technical issues in the technologies used. therefore, this study investigates the trends of tel in introductory programming in terms of its pedagogical approach in addressing the difficulties faced by the low achievers and the online technologies needed to facilitate their learning through a systematic literature review study between the year 2017 till 2021. by adopting kitchenham’s methodology, a total of 20 papers have been selected from various journals and databases and we found that the trends of tel for low achievers in introductory programming comprised of six main online educational technologies, which are the web-based learning, mobile learning, multimedia learning, gamification, block-based programming and virtual reality or robot simulations. the findings from this review can be used for future research in utilizing tel in the field of programming education, especially for low achievers.

The two-step cluster analysis of pre-COVID-19 experience and cybersecurity concerns about online education for academic staff in Saudi universities

The purpose of this research is to learn about the attitudes of the academic staff of the medical, business, humanities, and science and engineering disciplines concerning online education during the COVID-19 pandemic at Umm Al-Qura University (UQU), Saudi Arabia. While research in online education focuses on learning experiences such as facilities, learning materials, and learning interests, several elements of online education in this research were investigated, including advantages, features, and cybersecurity. The research data were gathered through a survey containing three demographic items, four items on perceptions of online education, and seven questions on perceptions of cybersecurity. Responses obtained from 238 academic staff were used for statistical analysis. After the routine descriptive analysis analyses, the response data were subjected to unsupervised k-means centroid cluster analysis. Two clusters of academic staff differing in teaching disciplines, and pre-COVID experience in online education were identified. Cluster 1 had medical and business and humanities academic staff, predominated by those without pre-COVID experience in online education, and perceived online education and cybersecurity at neutral to a slightly low level. Cluster 2 consisted of science and engineering discipline academic staff predominated by those with pre-COVID online education experience and perceived online education and cybersecurity in the range of neutral to slightly high levels. The result of this study shows that academic staff in the medical, business, and humanities disciplines have less expertise with online education software and a low level of awareness about online education security. On the other hand, academic staff of science and engineering disciplines fields has more expertise with online educational technologies and a better level of understanding of online education security.

Webcam-based eye tracking to detect mind wandering and comprehension errors.

Recent advances in computer vision have opened the door for scalable eye tracking using only a webcam. Such solutions are particularly useful for online educational technologies, in which a goal is to respond adaptively to students' ongoing experiences. We used WebGazer, a webcam-based eye-tracker, to automatically detect covert cognitive states during an online reading-comprehension task related to task-unrelated thought and comprehension. We present data from two studies using different populations: (1) a relatively homogenous sample of university students (N = 105), and (2) a more diverse sample from Prolific (N = 173, with < 20% White participants). Across both studies, the webcam-based eye-tracker provided sufficiently accurate and precise gaze measurements to predict both task-unrelated thought and reading comprehension from a single calibration. We also present initial evidence of predictive validity, including a positive correlation between predicted rates of task-unrelated thought and comprehension scores. Finally, we present slicing analyses to determine how performance changed under certain conditions (lighting, glasses, etc.) and generalizability of the results across the two datasets (e.g., training on the data Study 1 and testing on data from Study 2, and vice versa). We conclude by discussing results in the context of remote research and learning technologies.
