Improved Coherent One-Way Quantum key Distribution for High-Loss Channels

The coherent one-way (COW) quantum key distribution (QKD) is a highly practical quantum communication protocol that is currently deployed in off-the-shelves products. However, despite its simplicity and widespread use, the security of COW-QKD is still an open problem. This is largely due to its unique security feature based on inter-signal phase distribution, which makes it very difficult to analyze using standard security proof techniques. Here, to overcome this problem, we present a simple variant of COW-QKD and prove its security in the infinite-key limit. The proposed modifications only involve an additional vacuum tail signal following every encoded signal and a balanced beam-splitter for passive measurement basis choice. Remarkably, the resulting key rate of our protocol is comparable with both the existing upper-bound on COW-QKD key rate and the secure key rate of the coherent-state BB84 protocol. Our findings therefore suggest that the secured deployment of COW-QKD systems in high loss optical networks is indeed feasible with minimal adaptations applied to its hardware and software.

Theoretical analysis of quantum key distribution systems when integrated with a DWDM optical transport network

Theoretical research and numerical simulation of the noise influence caused by spontaneous Raman scattering, four-wave mixing, and linear channel cross talk on the performances of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems were conducted. Three types of QKD systems were considered: a coherent one-way QKD protocol, subcarrier-wave QKD system, and continuous-variable QKD integrated with classical dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) channels. We calculate the secure key generation rate for the systems mentioned addressing different channel allocation schemes (i.e., configurations). A uniform DWDM grid is considered with a quantum channel located in the C-band and O-band (at 1310 nm) of a telecommunication window. The systems’ performances are analyzed in terms of the maximal achievable distance values. Configurations for further analysis and investigation are chosen optimally, i.e., their maximal achievable distances are the best.

Quantifying entanglement preservability of experimental processes

Preserving entanglement is a crucial dynamical process for entanglement-based quantum computation and quantum-information processes, such as one-way quantum computing and quantum key distribution. However, the problem of quantifying the ability of an experimental process to preserve two-qubit entanglement in experimentally feasible ways is not well understood. Accordingly, herein, we consider the use of two measures, namely composition and robustness, for quantitatively characterizing the ability of a process to preserve entanglement, referred to henceforth as entanglement preservability. A fidelity benchmark is additionally derived to identify the ability of a process to preserve entanglement. We show that the measures and introduced benchmark are experimentally feasible and require only local measurements on single qubits and preparations of separable states. Moreover, they are applicable to all physical processes that can be described using the general theory of quantum operations, e.g., qubit dynamics in photonic and superconducting systems. Our method extends the existing tools for analyzing channels, e.g., channel resource theory, to quantify entanglement preservability for non-trace-preserving quantum processes. The results are of significant interest for applications in quantum-information processing in which entanglement preservation is required.

Coherent one-way quantum conference key agreement based on twin field

Quantum conference key agreement (CKA) enables key sharing among multiple trusted users with information-theoretic security. Currently, the key rates of most quantum CKA protocols suffer from the limit of the total efficiency among quantum channels. Inspired by the coherent one-way and twin-field quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols, we propose a quantum CKA protocol of three users. Exploiting coherent states with intensity 0 and μ to encode logic bits, our protocol can break the limit. Additionally, the requirements of phase randomization and multiple intensity modulation are removed in our protocol, making its experimental demonstration simple.

Semi-device-independent self-testing of unsharp measurements

Unsharp quantum measurements provide a resource in scenarios where one faces the trade-off between information gain and disturbance. In this work we introduce a prepare-transform-measure scenario in which two-outcome unsharp measurements outperform their sharp counterparts, as well as any stochastic strategy involving dichotomic projective measurements. Based on that, we propose a scheme for semi-device-independent self-testing of unsharp measurements and show that all two-outcome qubit measurements can be characterized in a robust way. Along with the main result, in this work we introduce a method, based on semidefinite programming, for bounding quantum correlations in scenarios with sequential measurements of length two. This method can also be applied to refine security analysis of the semi-device-independent one-way quantum key distribution. We also present new information gain-disturbance relation for pairs of dichotomic measurements.

Parameter Estimation with Almost No Public Communication for Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution.

One crucial step in any quantum key distribution (QKD) scheme is parameter estimation. In a typical QKD protocol the users have to sacrifice part of their raw data to estimate the parameters of the communication channel as, for example, the error rate. This introduces a trade-off between the secret key rate and the accuracy of parameter estimation in the finite-size regime. Here we show that continuous-variable QKD is not subject to this constraint as the whole raw keys can be used for both parameter estimation and secret key generation, without compromising the security. First, we show that this property holds for measurement-device-independent (MDI) protocols, as a consequence of the fact that in a MDI protocol the correlations between Alice and Bob are postselected by the measurement performed by an untrusted relay. This result is then extended beyond the MDI framework by exploiting the fact that MDI protocols can simulate device-dependent one-way QKD with arbitrarily high precision.

QKD optical scheme calibration system

One-way quantum key distribution (QKD) optical schemes require active stabilization algorithms for continuous operation. To achieve this a mathematical model for a new optical scheme has been developed. The model uses Jones calculus to describe the polarization state evolution within the optical scheme. The developed algorithms have been successfully tested experimentally.

Noise-enhanced CVQKD with untrusted source

The performance of one-way and two-way continuous variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) protocols can be increased by adding some noise on the reconciliation side. In this paper, we propose to add noise at the reconciliation end to improve the performance of CVQKD with untrusted source. We derive the key rate of this case and analyze the impact of the additive noise. The simulation results show that the optimal additive noise can improve the performance of the system in terms of maximum transmission distance and tolerable excess noise.

Gaussian two-mode attacks in one-way quantum cryptography

We investigate the asymptotic security of one-way continuous variable quantum key distribution against Gaussian two-mode coherent attacks. The one-way protocol is implemented by arranging the channel uses in two-mode blocks. By applying symmetric random permutations over these blocks, the security analysis is in fact reduced to study two-mode coherent attacks and, in particular, Gaussian ones, due to the extremality of Gaussian states. We explicitly show that the use of two-mode Gaussian correlations by an eavesdropper leads to asymptotic secret key rates which are strictly larger than the rate obtained under standard single-mode Gaussian attacks.

An attack aimed at active phase compensation in one-way phase-encoded QKD systems

Phase drift is an inherent problem in one-way phase-encoded quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. Although combining passive with active phase compensation (APC) processes can effectively compensate for the phase drift, the security problems brought about by these processes are rarely considered. In this paper, we point out a security hole in the APC process and put forward a corresponding attack scheme. Under our proposed attack, the quantum bit error rate (QBER) of the QKD can be close to zero for some conditions. However, under the same conditions the ratio r of the key “0” and the key “1” which Bob (the legal communicators Alice and Bob) gets is no longer 1:1 but 2:1, which may expose Eve (the eavesdropper). In order to solve this problem, we modify the resend strategy of the attack scheme, which can force r to reach 1 and the QBER to be lower than the tolerable QBER.

A fast and versatile quantum key distribution system with hardware key distillation and wavelength multiplexing

We present a compactly integrated, 625 MHz clocked coherent one-way quantum key distribution system which continuously distributes secret keys over an optical fibre link. To support high secret key rates, we implemented a fast hardware key distillation engine which allows for key distillation rates up to 4 Mbps in real time. The system employs wavelength multiplexing in order to run over only a single optical fibre. Using fast gated InGaAs single photon detectors, we reliably distribute secret keys with a rate above 21 kbps over 25 km of optical fibre. We optimized the system considering a security analysis that respects finite-key-size effects, authentication costs and system errors for a security parameter of εQKD = 4 × 10−9.

A quantum relay chip based on telecommunication integrated optics technology

We investigate an integrated optical circuit on lithium niobate designed to implement a teleportation-based quantum relay scheme for one-way quantum communication at a telecom wavelength. Such an advanced quantum circuit merges for the first time both optical–optical and electro-optical nonlinear functions necessary for implementing the desired on-chip single-qubit teleportation. On the one hand, spontaneous parametric down-conversion is used to produce entangled photon pairs. On the other, we take advantage of two photon routers, consisting of electro-optically controllable couplers, to separate the paired photons and to carry out a Bell state measurement, respectively. After having validated all the individual functions in the classical regime, we performed a Hong–Ou–Mandel experiment to mimic a one-way quantum communication link. Such a quantum effect, seen as a prerequisite towards achieving teleportation, has been obtained at one of the routers when the chip was coupled to an external single-photon source. The two-photon interference pattern shows a net visibility of 80%, which validates the proof of principle of a ‘quantum relay circuit’ for qubits carried by telecom photons. In the case of optimized losses, such a chip could increase the maximal achievable distance of one-way quantum key distribution links by a factor of 1.8. Our approach and results emphasize the potential of integrated optics on lithium niobate as a key technology for future reconfigurable quantum information manipulation.

Semi-device-independent security of one-way quantum key distribution

By testing nonlocality, the security of entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD) can be enhanced to being 'device-independent'. Here we ask whether such a strong form of security could also be established for one-way (prepare and measure) QKD. While fully device-independent security is impossible, we show that security can be guaranteed against individual attacks in a semi-device-independent scenario. In the latter, the devices used by the trusted parties are non-characterized, but the dimensionality of the quantum systems used in the protocol is assumed to be bounded. Our security proof relies on the analogies between one-way QKD, dimension witnesses and random-access codes.

Continuous high speed coherent one-way quantum key distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is the first commercial quantum technology operating at the level of single quanta and is a leading light for quantum-enabled photonic technologies. However, controlling these quantum optical systems in real world environments presents significant challenges. For the first time, we have brought together three key concepts for future QKD systems: a simple high-speed protocol; high performance detection; and integration both, at the component level and for standard fibre network connectivity. The QKD system is capable of continuous and autonomous operation, generating secret keys in real time. Laboratory and field tests were performed and comparisons made with robust InGaAs avalanche photodiodes and superconducting detectors. We report the first real world implementation of a fully functional QKD system over a 43 dB-loss (150 km) transmission line in the Swisscom fibre optic network where we obtained average real-time distribution rates over 3 hours of 2.5 bps.

Upper bounds for the secure key rate of the decoy-state quantum key distribution

The use of decoy states in quantum key distribution (QKD) has provided a method for substantially increasing the secret key rate and distance that can be covered by QKD protocols with practical signals. The security analysis of these schemes, however, leaves open the possibility that the development of better proof techniques or better classical postprocessing methods might further improve their performance in realistic scenarios. In this paper, we derive upper bounds on the secure key rate for decoy-state QKD. These bounds are based basically only on the classical correlations established by the legitimate users during the quantum communication phase of the protocol. The only assumption about the possible postprocessing methods is that double click events are randomly assigned to single click events. Further, we consider only secure key rates based on the uncalibrated device scenario which assigns imperfections such as detection inefficiency to the eavesdropper. Our analysis relies on two preconditions for secure two-way and one-way QKD. The legitimate users need to prove that there exists no separable state (in the case of two-way QKD) or that there exists no quantum state having a symmetric extension (one-way QKD) that is compatible with the available measurements results. Both criteria have been previously applied to evaluate single-photon implementations of QKD. Here we use them to investigate a realistic source of weak coherent pulses. The resulting upper bounds can be formulated as a convex optimization problem known as a semidefinite program which can be efficiently solved. For the standard four-state QKD protocol, they are quite close to known lower bounds, thus showing that there are clear limits to the further improvement of classical postprocessing techniques in decoy-state QKD.

Decoy pulse quantum key distribution for practical purposes

Experimental one-way decoy pulse quantum key distribution running for 25 h over a fibre distance of 25 km is reported. The decoy pulse protocol employed uses two weak pulses (signal and decoy) and one vacuum pulse. In parallel to the key sifting, simultaneous error correction and privacy amplification yielding a final, average secure key rate of 5.7 kbps are performed. The random bits from the secure keys are found to pass stringent statistical tests.

We report here a complete experimental realization of one-way decoy-pulse quantum key distribution, demonstrating an unconditionally secure key rate of 5.51 kbps for a 25.3 km fibre length. This is two orders of magnitudes higher than the value that can be obtained with a non-decoy system. We introduce also a simple test for detecting the photon number splitting attack and highlight that it is essential for the security of the technique to fully characterize the source and detectors used.

Single-photon quantum key distribution in the presence of loss

We investigate two-way and one-way single-photon quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols in the presence of loss introduced by the quantum channel. Our analysis is based on a simple precondition for secure QKD in each case. In particular, the legitimate users need to prove that there exists no separable state (in the case of two-way QKD), or that there exists no quantum state having a symmetric extension (one-way QKD), that is compatible with the available measurements results. We show that both criteria can be formulated as a convex optimisation problem known as a semidefinite program, which can be efficiently solved. Moreover, we prove that the solution to the dual optimisation corresponds to the evaluation of an optimal witness operator that belongs to the minimal verification set of them for the given two-way (or one-way) QKD protocol. A positive expectation value of this optimal witness operator states that no secret key can be distilled from the available measurements results. We apply such analysis to several well-known single-photon QKD protocols under losses.

Quantum key distribution based on phase encoding and polarization measurement

A one-way quantum key distribution scheme based on intrinsically stable Faraday-mirror-type Michelson interferometers with four-port polarizing beam splitters has been demonstrated that can compensate for birefringence effects automatically. The encoding is performed with phase modulators, but decoding is accomplished through measurement of the polarization state of Bob's photons. An extinction ratio of about 30 dB was maintained for several hours over 50 km of fiber at 1310 nm without any adjustment to the setup, which shows its good potential for practical systems.
