Using Artificial Intelligence Chatbots to Support English-as-a-Foreign Language Students’ Self-Regulated Reading

Self-regulated learning (SRL) has been integrated into English-as-a-Foreign Language (EFL) reading instruction to enhance students’ reading achievement. Evidence indicates that providing personalized support is critical to SRL. However, providing personalized support is time-consuming and challenging to implement in language classrooms. Although personalized support has been built into many online reading systems, the support is often delivered in a one-way manner, with little chance for follow-up discussions. This innovation in practice introduces an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed to provide personalized SRL support for EFL students in reading. The AI chatbot was designed as a reading companion to facilitate active, out-of-class reading that expands in-class instruction. By giving autonomy to students to engage with appropriate reading materials and receive personalized self-regulated reading (SRR) guidance, the innovation empowered learners to overcome challenges in the reading process and facilitated their use of SRR strategies. The pedagogical values of the innovation were explored from students’ perspectives. Future pedagogical directions for AI-supported SRR instruction is also discussed.

Multiscale Dense Cross-Attention Mechanism with Covariance Pooling for Hyperspectral Image Scene Classification

In recent years, learning algorithms based on deep convolution frameworks have gradually become the research hotspots in hyperspectral image classification tasks. However, in the classification process, high-dimensionality problems with large amounts of data and feature redundancy with interspectral correlation of hyperspectral images have not been solved efficiently. Therefore, this paper investigates data dimensionality reduction and feature extraction and proposes a novel multiscale dense cross-attention mechanism algorithm with covariance pooling (MDCA-CP) for hyperspectral image scene classification. The multisize convolution module can detect subtle changes in the hyperspectral images’ spatial and spectral dimensions between the pixels in the local areas and are suitable for extracting hyperspectral data with complex and diverse types of structures. For traditional algorithms that assign attention weights in a one-way manner, thus leading to the loss of feature information, the dense cross-attention mechanism proposed in this study can jointly distribute the attention weights horizontally and vertically to efficiently capture the most representative features. In addition, this study also uses covariance pooling to further extract the features of hyperspectral images from the second order. Experiments have been conducted on three well-known hyperspectral datasets, and the results thus obtained show that the MDCA-CP algorithm is superior compared to the other well-known methods.

LncRNA TTN-AS1 promotes the progression of cholangiocarcinoma via the miR-320a/neuropilin-1 axis

Neuropilin-1 regulated by miR-320a participates in the progression of cholangiocarcinoma by serving as a co-receptor that activates multiple signaling pathways. The present study sought to investigate upstream lncRNAs that control the expression of miR-320a/neuropilin-1 axis and dissect some of the underlying mechanisms. Here we report lncRNA TTN-AS1 (titin-antisense RNA1) acts as a sponging ceRNA to downregulate miR-320a and is highly expressed in human cholangiocarcinoma tissues and cells. The expression of the above three molecules is correlated with the clinicopathologic parameters of cholangiocarcinoma patients. In this study, multiple bioinformatics tools and databases were employed to seek potential lncRNAs that have binding sites with miR-320a and TTN-AS1 was identified because it exhibited the largest folds of alteration between cholangiocarcinoma and normal bile duct epithelial cells. The regulatory role of TTN-AS1 on miR-320a was further evaluated by luciferase reporter and RNA pulldown assays, coupled with in situ hybridization and RNA immunoprecipitation analyses, which showed that TTN-AS1 bound to miR-320a through an argonaute2-dependent RNA interference pathway in the cytoplasm of cholangiocarcinoma cells. Knockdown and overexpression assays showed that the regulatory effect between TTN-AS1 and miR-320 was in a one-way manner. TTN-AS1 promoted the proliferation and migration of cholangiocarcinoma cells via the miR-320a/ neuropilin-1 axis. The function of TTN-AS1 on tumor growth and its interaction with miR-320a were confirmed in animal models. Further mechanistic studies revealed that TTA-AS1, through downregulating miR-320a, promoted cell cycle progression, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and tumor angiogenesis by upregulating neuropilin-1, which co-interacted with the hepatocyte growth factor/c-Met and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β/TGF-β receptor I pathways. In conclusion, the present results demonstrate that lncRNA TTA-AS1 is a sponging ceRNA for miR-320a, which in turn downregulates neuropilin-1 in cholangiocarcinoma cells, indicating these three molecules represent potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in the management of cholangiocarcinoma.

SSIIIa-RNAi suppression associated changes in rice grain quality and starch biosynthesis metabolism in response to high temperature

High temperature (HT) is a main environmental restraint that affects rice yield and grain quality. In this study, SSIIIa-RNAi and its wild-type (WT) were used to investigate the effect of HT exposure on the isozyme-specific variation of several key starch biosynthesis enzymes in developing endosperms and its relation to starch properties. SSIIIa-RNAi had minimal impact on grain chalky occurrence under normal temperature growth, but it could up-grade the susceptibility of grain chalky occurrence to HT exposure, due to the relatively sensitive response of AGPase and SSI to HT exposure. Different from WT, SSIIIa-RNAi had the relatively enriched proportion of chains with DP 13–16 under HT, and HT-induced decline in the proportion of DP < 12 became much larger for SSIIIa-RNAi relative to WT. SSIIIa-RNAi significantly enhanced the expression of SSI isozyme and total SS activity, whereas SSI-RNAi deficiency had little impact on the expression of SSIIIa isozyme. In this regard, the compensatory increase in SSI isozyme as a result of SSIIIa deficiency occurred only in a one-way manner. SSIIIa-RNAi caused a striking elevation in BEIIa expression, and the effect of SSIIIa deficiency on the chain length distribution in relation to HT exposure was closely associated with the participation of BEIIa, SSI, and their interaction in amylopectin biosynthesis.

Proof-of-principle experimental realization of a qubit-like qudit-based quantum key distribution scheme

In comparison to qubit-based protocols, qudit-based quantum key distribution ones generally allow two cooperative parties to share unconditionally secure keys under a higher channel noise. However, it is very hard to prepare and measure the required quantum states in qudit-based protocols in general. One exception is the recently proposed highly error tolerant qudit-based protocol known as the Chau15 (Chau 2015 Phys. Rev. A 92 062324). Remarkably, the state preparation and measurement in this protocol can be done relatively easily since the required states are phase encoded almost like the diagonal basis states of a qubit. Here we report the first proof-of-principle demonstration of the Chau15 protocol. One highlight of our experiment is that its post-processing is based on practical one-way manner, while the original proposal in Chau (2015 Phys. Rev. A 92 062324) relies on complicated two-way post-processing, which is a great challenge in experiment. In addition, by manipulating time-bin qudit and measurement with a variable delay interferometer, our realization is extensible to qudit with high-dimensionality and confirms the experimental feasibility of the Chau15 protocol.

Secretory Clusterin Mediates Oxaliplatin Resistance via the Gadd45a/PI3K/Akt Signaling Pathway in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Purpose: Systemic therapy has often been used for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, due to drug resistance, the use of cytotoxic chemotherapy in the treatment of patients with advanced HCC has typically demonstrated low response rates. Secretory clusterin (sCLU) is expressed in aggressive late-stage tumors and associated with resistance to chemotherapy, including that in HCC cases. The present research aimed to investigate the biological role of sCLU in HCC.Methods: sCLU expression in HCC and normal tissues was examined using immunohistochemical staining, followed by analysis of the correlation between sCLU expression and clinical indicators. In addition, the role and internal mechanism of sCLU in cell proliferation and apoptosis were investigated in HCC cells.Results: sCLU expression was significantly upregulated in HCC tissues; and was associated with histological grade and poor overall survival. The levels of sCLU were significantly increased in Bel7402, SMMC7721 and resistant HCC cells (Bel7404-OR). Inhibiting the activity of sCLU enhanced the chemosensitivity of Bel7402 and SMMC7721 cells. Downregulation of sCLU could increase the expression of Gadd45a in HCC cells. Overexpression of sCLU contributed to drug resistance in Bel7402, SMMC7721 and Bel7404-OR cells; whereas, overexpression of Gadd45a alone overcame drug resistance in the cells above. No significant expression changes of sCLU and Gadd45a were observed in HCC cells after the interference of a selective inhibitor of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. However, regulation of the expression of Gadd45a could influence the phosphorylation level of Akt; and further regulate the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax proteins involved in the mitochondrial apoptosis pathways.Conclusions: The results demonstrate that sCLU/Gadd45a/PI3K/Akt signaling represents a novel pathway that could regulate drug resistance in a one-way manner in HCC cells.

Fast and accurate two-field reduced basis approximation for parametrized thermoelasticity problems

This paper concerns a two-field reduced basis algorithm for the metamodelling of parametrized one-way coupled thermoelasticity problems based on the constitutive relation error (CRE) estimation. The coupled system consists of parametrized thermal diffusion and elastostatic equations which are explicitly coupled in a one-way manner. The former can be solved in advance independently and the latter can be solved afterwards using the solution of the former. For the fast and accurate analysis of the coupled system, we developed an algorithm that can choose adaptively the number of reduced basis functions of the temperature field to approximate the CRE equality of the mechanical field. We compute approximately the upper bound for the true errors of displacement and stress fields in energy norms. To enable this, a two-field greedy sampling strategy is adopted to construct the displacement and stress fields in an efficient manner. The computational efficiency of the proposed approach is demonstrated with computing the effective coefficient of thermal expansion of heterogeneous materials.

Coupled Overset Unstructured Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Launch Environment Acoustics Prediction

A novel approach for the accurate prediction of launch environment acoustic physics is presented. Launch vehicles experience extreme acoustic loads during liftoff, driven by the interaction of rocket plumes and plume-generated acoustic waves with ground structures. In this work, a well-established hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes/large-eddy simulation unstructured mesh solver is used to efficiently model the complex turbulent plume physics, and a high-order accurate discontinuous Galerkin solver is used to accurately propagate acoustic waves across large distances throughout the launch environment. The two solvers operate on separate overlapping meshes, and an innovative overset coupling approach is used to transmit the plume-generated acoustics to the far field in a one-way manner in which the turbulent plume prediction is unaffected by the outer acoustic propagation physics. The framework upon which the solvers are developed is described along with details outlining the overset domain connectivity and interpolation methods. Results are presented that demonstrate the accuracy of the capability for aeroacoustic predictions, and the merits of the approach are evaluated using a notional space launch system launch environment in which rocket plumes are represented by transient acoustic sources.

Multi-frequency optical unidirectional transmission based on one-way guided mode resonance in an extremely simple dielectric grating

Excellent performance, simple structure and small size are the key measures of an all-optical element. In this paper, an optical diode with multiple operating frequencies is proposed based on an extremely simple dielectric diffraction grating. The optical unidirectional transmission (UDT) is attributed to the guided mode resonance in the grating substrate which occurs in an one-way manner. Compared with the novel UDT phenomenon based on surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) in metallic structures, the performance of this UDT is enhanced greatly: The transmittance can approach almost to 0% and 90% respectively in the two opposite directions. It is achieved at multiple frequencies simultaneously and is not restricted to transverse magnetic (TM) polarized wave. The relationship between the UDT and the reciprocal theorem is also analyzed by taking this kind of UDT for an example. It is found that the reciprocal theorem is still valid in this system and the UDT is obtained by means of channel effect.

The Corporate Side of the Blogosphere: Examining the Variations of Design and Engagement Among Fortune 500 Blogs

Using design and communication principles, this study uses a content analysis design to evaluate all active blogs from the 2011 Fortune 500 list (n = 125). The results indicate that corporate America has only modestly incorporated the dialogic principles into their blogs. Current corporate blogs are well-designed as far as making them searchable and easy to navigate; however, the blogs are mostly being used to provide information in a one-way manner rather than creating an open dialogue with consumers. While blogging can enhance relationships with stakeholders, corporate communicators must strive to develop legitimate conversations with their blog readers.

Physical mechanisms responsible for forming the 4-peak longitudinal structure of the 135.6 nm ionospheric emission: First results from the Canadian IAM

The Canadian Ionosphere and Atmosphere Model (Canadian IAM or C-IAM) is a new project aimed at the development of whole atmosphere modeling capabilities in Canada. The first version of the C-IAM is comprised of the extended Canadian Middle Atmosphere (CMAM) and the Murmansk's Upper Atmosphere Model (UAM), currently coupled in a one-way manner. The model extends from the surface to the inner magnetosphere and is able to describe the impact on the upper atmosphere and ionosphere of self-consistently generated lower atmosphere dynamical variability. In the current study, the C-IAM has been used to investigate the physical mechanisms responsible for forming the 4-peak longitudinal structure of the 135.6nm ionospheric emission observed by the IMAGE satellite over the tropics at 20:00 local time from March 20 to April 20, 2002. To perform this study, the C-IAM has been run for this whole observation period taking into account a realistic day-to-day variation in solar and geomagnetic activity. The 4-peak longitudinal structure produced by the model and averaged over the observation period is in a good agreement with the observations. Analysis of the model results suggests that the main mechanism for generating the longitudinal structure in the ionospheric emission after sunset is a modification of the ionospheric electric field in the E region caused in the course of the daytime by differences in the diurnal evolution of the zonal wind in different longitudinal sectors due to waves penetrating from the lower atmosphere. In agreement with the earlier findings, our study showed that this mechanism is driven mainly by the diurnal eastward propagating tide with zonal number 3. A small contribution to the formation of the 4-peak structure is also provided by longitudinal variations in meridional wind and neutral composition at the F2 layer altitudes. The 4 peaks being clearly visible in the monthly mean result are not, however, present every day. Day-to-day variability of both the diurnal wind evolution and geomagnetic activity can significantly modify the longitudinal structure of the ionospheric emission.

Key qualitative and quantitative indicators: towards an integrated evaluation framework for government websites in Thailand

The objectives of this study are to create a framework to evaluate government websites. Qualitative research was employed, including in-depth interviews and literature analysis. Results show that government organisations in general still do not take public relations efforts seriously and seem to communicate in a one-way manner. Consequently, their websites are mainly used to disseminate information rather than to engage in conversation with their key public. They also heavily rely on data gathered by available computing software and rarely use other empirical data such as content analysis, attained awards and ranking, and admiration indexes as performance indicators. To evaluate the output and outcome of public relations efforts in a more systematic way, this paper adapted a five-dimension model and situational website evaluation frameworks have then been created based on research findings. The framework gives each criterion clearer indicators and categorises them into five dimensions and two situations. Due to multiple indicators and measurements, there is a need to select only indicators that can ensure results that meet their evaluation objectives without spending unnecessary time and effort on superfluous evaluation documents.

Trust and trustworthiness: conceptual distinctions and their implications for natural resources management

Few natural resource management (NRM) studies discriminate between trust and trustworthiness. However, this approach, which combines the attitude of one actor with the characteristics of another actor, is common in the organisational management literature. Our case study, set in a wildfire management context in Australia, sought to explore: (1) how community members and NRM staff defined trust and described trustworthiness; (2) how these trust definitions did, or did not, reflect conceptualisations in the literature; and, (3) whether explicitly differentiating between trust and trustworthiness is useful in an NRM context. Our findings suggest that participants defined trust in three main ways: as ‘having a good relationship’; as ‘being able to rely on others’ in a one-way manner; and, as ‘a relationship where parties rely on one another’ in a reciprocal manner. Our findings also suggest that participants differentiated these trust definitions from trustworthiness, that is, from the characteristics and actions which made an individual or agency worthy of trust. These findings suggest that it is useful to differentiate trust from trustworthiness, because it allows NRM managers and researchers to better understand both the trusting intentions of community members and the characteristics of the agency which contribute to that trust.

One-way Rayleigh-Wood anomalies and tunable narrowband transmission in photonic crystal gratings with broken structural symmetry

In photonic crystal (PC) gratings whose structural symmetry is broken owing to one-side corrugations, the Rayleigh-Wood anomalies can appear in a one-way manner. In the combination with the vanishing coupling to the lowest Floquet-Bloch mode at the upper band edge, these anomalies lead to the appearance of the defect-mode-like, i.e., very narrow one-way transmission, peak, which cannot appear in the corresponding slab of PC without corrugations. Such a sole peak can be transformed into a one-way transmission band with a desired width by varying angle of incidence. The nonoverlapping and thus switchable one-way (higher-order) and two-way (zero-order) transmission bands can be obtained in both the frequency and incidence-angle domains. Adjustment of PC lattice and corrugation parameters allows one to obtain two subsequent one-way bands, every being connected with a certain higher diffraction order. Conditions required for the appearance of a narrow one-way transmission band in the vicinity of a Rayleigh-Wood anomaly are well consistent with typical dispersion features of a very large class of PCs and do not need unusual performances.

Secretory clusterin contributes to oxaliplatin resistance by activating Akt pathway in hepatocellular carcinoma

Secretory clusterin (sCLU) is expressed in numerous cancers and is associated with the resistance to chemotherapy. However, the role of sCLU in the resistance of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to oxaliplatin (OXA), a recently used third-generation platinum agent, remains unclear. The stable transfectants that are depleted of or overexpress sCLU and OXA-resistant cells were generated using human HCC cells. Overexpression of sCLU abrogated OXA-induced inhibition of cell growth and cell apoptosis, but depletion of sCLU synergized with OXA to inhibit cell growth and enhance cell apoptosis, by regulating proteins involved in mitochondrial apoptosis pathways, such as Bcl-2, Bax, Bcl-xL and caspase-9, and affecting phosphorylation of Akt and GSK-3β. Overexpression of sCLU in either OXA-resistant cells or stable transfectants that overexpress sCLU significantly increased phosphorylated Akt. However, specific inhibition of Akt enhanced sensitivity of sCLU-overexpressing cells to OXA, but had no effect on sCLU expression, suggesting that the regulatory effects between sCLU and pAkt may be in a one-way manner in HCC cells. The expression levels of sCLU affected the therapeutic efficacy of OXA to treat HCC tumors established in immunodeficiency mice. The results have demonstrated that sCLU contributes to OXA resistance by activating Akt pathway, indicating that sCLU may be a novel molecular target for overcoming OXA resistance in HCC.

Numerical simulations of three-dimensional nonlinear acoustical waves: Application to the modeling of helicoïdal beams

A numerical method for the simulation of three-dimensional nonlinear acoustical wave propagation through a homogeneous or weakly heterogeneous medium is presented. This method is based on the resolution a nonlinear wave equation taking into account diffraction, nonlinearities and weak heterogeneities exact up to second order. It is numerically solved in a one-way manner by using a classical splitting method in three steps: angular spectrum method for diffraction, implicit finite differences method for heterogeneities, and semi-analytical Burgers-Hayes method for nonlinearities. Simulations of propagation of nonlinear helicoïdal beams will illustrate the capacities of the method. This kind of acoustical beams featuring radial, azimuthal and axial variations of the field is intrinsically three-dimensional. Furthermore, they have properties of potential interest in biomedical acoustics either for imaging purposes (dynamics of the so-called topological charge) or for therapy purposes (generation of helical shock front or acoustical tweezers with radiation force).

Tweet, tweet, tweet: A content analysis of nonprofit organizations’ Twitter updates

Many of the relationship cultivation strategies and the dialogic principles assume symmetrical communication is taking place. However, significant amounts of information are shared in a one-way manner. Although they have fallen out of favor with many academics, the four models of public relations can provide significant insights into how organizations communicate. Using the models as the guiding framework, this brief study examines how nonprofit organizations from the Philanthropy 200 communicate on Twitter. The findings reveal that the organizations are more likely to use one-way models despite the potential for dialogue and community building on the social networking site.

Photochemical Behavior of Some p-Styrylstilbenes and Related Compounds: Spectral Properties and Photoisomerization in Solution and in Solid State

The spectral properties and Z,E-photoisomerizations of three 4-styrylstilbenes, a 4,4′-bis(β-methylstyryl)benzene and a 4,4′-distyrylstilbene were investigated in solution and in the solid state. Some notable features of the absorption and fluorescence spectra due to the structures and the phases (solution or solid) were observed, especially the Stokes shifts. Interesting photo-chemical behaviors in solution and in the solid state were also found. While the (E,Z)-4-styrylstilbenes undergo a one-way photoisomerization to their E,E-isomers with almost equal rates in solution, their quantum yields in the solid state decrease with increasing substituent size at the terminal aromatic rings. On the other hand, the 4,4′-bis(β-methylstyryl)benzene undergoes a mutual photoisomerization in solution, but its E,Z-isomer isomerizes in a one-way manner to the E,E-isomer in the solid state. Additionally, the (Z,E,Z)-4,4′-styrylstilbene was found to undergo a one-way photoisomerization to the E,E,E-isomer via the E,E,Z-isomer in solution and the crystalline E,E,Z-isomer to the E,E,E-isomer in the solid state.
