Influence of deformed parent vessel on rupture risk of micro cerebral aneurysm: Numerical study

One of significant impact of stent usage for the treatment of the saccular aneurysm is deformation of the parent vessel. Present study demonstrates the influence of the aneurysm deformation caused by the stent on the risk of aneurysm rupture. Computational fluid dynamic is applied for the modeling of the blood flow inside three internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms with different neck angles. One-way fluid–structure interaction model is applied for the interaction of the blood and vessel. Two stage of deformation is applied on the parent vessel to analyze the influence of deformation on the hemodynamic factors of wall shear stress and oscillatory shear index. Achieved results indicate that the deformation of the aneurysm by the stent significantly reduce wall shear stress is on the sac wall and decrease the risk of internal carotid artery ICA aneurysm rupture. Our finding confirm that the main effect of aneurysm deformation is reduction of the blood velocity near ostium region.

Simulating the mechanical stimulation of cells on a porous hydrogel scaffold using an FSI model to predict cell differentiation.

3D-structured hydrogel scaffolds are frequently used in tissue engineering applications as they can provide a supportive and biocompatible environment for the growth and regeneration of new tissue. Hydrogel scaffolds seeded with human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can be mechanically stimulated in bioreactors to promote the formation of cartilage or bone tissue. Although in vitro and in vivo experiments are necessary to understand the biological response of cells and tissues to mechanical stimulation, in silico methods are cost-effective and powerful approaches that can support these experimental investigations. In this study, we simulated the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) to predict cell differentiation on the entire surface of a 3D-structured hydrogel scaffold seeded with cells due to dynamic compressive load stimulation. The computational FSI model made it possible to simultaneously investigate the influence of both mechanical deformation and flow of the culture medium on the cells on the scaffold surface during stimulation. The transient one-way FSI model thus opens up significantly more possibilities for predicting cell differentiation in mechanically stimulated scaffolds than previous static microscale computational approaches used in mechanobiology. In a first parameter study, the impact of the amplitude of a sinusoidal compression ranging from 1% to 10% on the phenotype of cells seeded on a porous hydrogel scaffold was analyzed. The simulation results show that the number of cells differentiating into bone tissue gradually decreases with increasing compression amplitude, while differentiation into cartilage cells initially multiplied with increasing compression amplitude in the range of 2% up to 7% and then decreased. Fibrous cell differentiation was predicted from a compression of 5% and increased moderately up to a compression of 10%. At high compression amplitudes of 9% and 10%, negligible areas on the scaffold surface experienced high stimuli where no cell differentiation could occur. In summary, this study shows that simulation of the FSI system is a versatile approach in computational mechanobiology that can be used to study the effects of, for example, different scaffold designs and stimulation parameters on cell differentiation in mechanically stimulated 3D-structured scaffolds.

Studying the Factors of Human Carotid Atherosclerotic Plaque Rupture, by Calculating Stress/Strain in the Plaque, Based on CEUS Images: A Numerical Study.

Carotid plaque neovascularization is one of the major factors for the classification of vulnerable plaque, but the axial force effects of the pulsatile blood flow on the plaque with neovessel and intraplaque hemorrhage was unclear. Together with the severity of stenosis, the fibrous cap thickness, large lipid core, and the neovascularization followed by intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH) have been regarded as high-risk features of plaque rupture. In this work, the effects of these factors were evaluated on the progression and rupture of the carotid atherosclerotic plaques. Five geometries of carotid artery plaque were developed based on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) images, which contain two types of neovessel and IPH, and geometry without neovessel and IPH. A one-way fluid-structure interaction model was applied to compute the maximum principal stress and strain in the plaque. For that hyper-elastic and non-linear material, Yeoh 3rd Order strain energy density function was used for components of the plaque. The simulation results indicated that the maximum principal stress of plaque in the carotid artery was higher when the degree of the luminal stenosis increased and the thickness of the fibrous cap decreased. The neovessels within the plaque could introduce a 2.5% increments of deformation in the plaque under the pulsatile blood flow pressure. The IPH also contributed to the increased risk of plaque rupture that a gain of stress was 8.983, 14.526, and 34.47 kPa for the plaque with 50, 65, and 75%, respectively, when comparing stress in the plaque with IPH distributed at the middle to the shoulder of the plaque. In conclusion, neovascularization in the plaque could reduce the stability of the plaque by increasing the stress within the plaque. Also, the risk of plaque rupture increased when large luminal stenosis, thin fibrous cap, and IPH were observed.

Fluid structure interaction modelling of horizontal-axis wind turbine blades based on CFD and FEA

The increasing size and flexibility of large wind turbine blades introduces considerable aeroelastic effects, which are caused by FSI (fluid structure interaction). These effects might result in aeroelastic instability problems, such as edgewise instability and flutter, which can be devastating to the blades and the wind turbine. Therefore, accurate FSI modelling of wind turbine blades is crucial in the development of large wind turbines. In this study, an FSI model for wind turbine blades at full scale is established. The aerodynamic loads are calculated using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) model implemented in ANSYS FLUENT, and the blade structural responses are determined using a FEA (finite element analysis) model implemented in ANSYS Static Structural module. The interface of CFD and FEA is based on a one-way coupling, in which aerodynamic loads calculated from CFD modelling are mapped to FEA modelling as load boundary conditions. Validated by a series of benchmark computational tests, the one-way FSI model was applied to the modelling of WindPACT 1.5MW wind turbine blade, a representative large-scale horizontal-axis wind turbine blade. Five operational conditions are assessed, with the worst case found to be near the rated wind speed. Maximum tensile/compressive stresses and tip deflections in each case are found to be within material and structural limits, according to relevant design standards.

A compliant, banded outflow cannula for decreased afterload sensitivity of rotary right ventricular assist devices.

Biventricular support with dual rotary ventricular assist devices (VADs) has been implemented clinically with restriction of the right VAD (RVAD) outflow cannula to artificially increase afterload and, therefore, operate within recommended design speed ranges. However, the low preload and high afterload sensitivity of these devices increase the susceptibility of suction events. Active control systems are prone to sensor drift or inaccurate inferred (sensor-less) data, therefore an alternative solution may be of benefit. This study presents the in vitro evaluation of a compliant outflow cannula designed to passively decrease the afterload sensitivity of rotary RVADs and minimize left-sided suction events. A one-way fluid-structure interaction model was initially used to produce a design with suitable flow dynamics and radial deformation. The resultant geometry was cast with different initial cross-sectional restrictions and concentrations of a softening diluent before evaluation in a mock circulation loop. Pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) was increased from 50 dyne s/cm(5) until left-sided suction events occurred with each compliant cannula and a rigid, 4.5 mm diameter outflow cannula for comparison. Early suction events (PVR ∼ 300 dyne s/cm(5) ) were observed with the rigid outflow cannula. Addition of the compliant section with an initial 3 mm diameter restriction and 10% diluent expanded the outflow restriction as PVR increased, thus increasing RVAD flow rate and preventing left-sided suction events at PVR levels beyond 1000 dyne s/cm(5) . Therefore, the compliant, restricted outflow cannula provided a passive control system to assist in the prevention of suction events with rotary biventricular support while maintaining pump speeds within normal ranges of operation.

Computational Fluid Dynamic Analysis of a Vibrating Turbine Blade

This study presents the numerical fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modelling of a vibrating turbine blade using the commercial software ANSYS-12.1. The study has two major aims: (i) discussion of the current state of the art of modelling FSI in gas turbine engines and (ii) development of a “tuned” one-way FSI model of a vibrating turbine blade to investigate the correlation between the pressure at the turbine casing surface and the vibrating blade motion. Firstly, the feasibility of the complete FSI coupled two-way, three-dimensional modelling of a turbine blade undergoing vibration using current commercial software is discussed. Various modelling simplifications, which reduce the full coupling between the fluid and structural domains, are then presented. The one-way FSI model of the vibrating turbine blade is introduced, which has the computational efficiency of a moving boundary CFD model. This one-way FSI model includes the corrected motion of the vibrating turbine blade under given engine flow conditions. This one-way FSI model is used to interrogate the pressure around a vibrating gas turbine blade. The results obtained show that the pressure distribution at the casing surface does not differ significantly, in its general form, from the pressure at the vibrating rotor blade tip.
