Application of Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles for Dye Wastewater Treatment

A facile one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was achieved using the ethanolic extract of Cavendish banana florets as source of reducing agents for the conversion of Ag+ to Ag. The appearance of surface plasmon resonance peak between 410–435 nm in the UV Vis spectra confirmed the formation of AgNPs. The effects of different reaction conditions on the size and concentration of AgNPs were evaluated. The optimum conditions identified were pH 7 at 80 °C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed spherical AgNPs with a mean particle size of 13.55 nm. On the other hand, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis confirmed the presence of silver (Ag) as the bulk element (87.25%). Other elements such as carbon (C) and oxygen (O) are attributed to the capping agents of AgNPs which agrees with the results in the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The optimized AgNPs were used for dye degradation using methyl orange (MO) as the model dye under acidified conditions. The maximum MO dye degradation of 96.07% and 77.32% at pH 1.5 and 2 were achieved after 10 min and 1320 min, respectively. This highlights the potential use of green-synthesized AgNPs for dye wastewater treatment.

One-Pot Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Derived from Aqueous Leaf Extract of Ageratum conyzoides and Their Biological Efficacy.

The main objective of the present research work is to assess the biological properties of the aqueous plant extract (ACAE) synthesised silver nanoparticles from the herbal plant Ageratum conyzoides, and their biological applications. The silver nanoparticle syntheses from Ageratum conyzoides (Ac-AgNPs) were optimised with different parameters, such as pH (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10) and varied silver nitrate concentration (1 mM and 5 mM). Based on the UV-vis spectroscopy analysis of the synthesised silver nanoparticles, the concentration of 5 mM with the pH at 8 was recorded as the peak reduction at 400 nm; and these conditions were optimized were used for further studies. The results of the FE-SEM analysis recorded the size ranges (~30-90 nm), and irregular spherical and triangular shapes of the AC-AgNPs were captured. The characterization reports of the HR-TEM investigation of AC-AgNPs were also in line with the FE-SEM studies. The antibacterial efficacies of AC-AgNPs have revealed the maximum zone of inhibition against S. typhi to be within 20 mm. The in vitro antiplasmodial activity of AC-AgNPs is shown to have an effective antiplasmodial property (IC50:17.65 μg/mL), whereas AgNO3 has shown a minimum level of IC50: value 68.03 μg/mL, and the Ac-AE showed >100 μg/mL at 24 h of parasitaemia suppression. The α-amylase inhibitory properties of AC-AgNPs have revealed a maximum inhibition similar to the control Acarbose (IC50: 10.87 μg/mL). The antioxidant activity of the AC-AgNPs have revealed a better property (87.86% ± 0.56, 85.95% ± 1.02 and 90.11 ± 0.29%) when compared with the Ac-AE and standard in all the three different tests, such as DPPH, FRAP and H2O2 scavenging assay, respectively. The current research work might be a baseline for the future drug expansion process in the area of nano-drug design, and its applications also has a lot of economic viability and is a safer method in synthesising or producing silver nanoparticles.

A Combinatorial Approach towards Antibacterial and Antioxidant Activity Using Tartaric Acid Capped Silver Nanoparticles

The convenient synthetic strategy for the one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles capped by tartaric acid with a controlled size is reported here. Their characterization is revealed through spectroscopic protocols, such as UV/Vis and FTIR, while SEM, DLS and a Zetasizer revealed the surface morphology, size distribution and surface charge on the nanoparticles. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band was observed at 406 nm with 1.07 a.u absorbance, the image for SEM shows that the particles were monodispersed and spherical in shape, while the z-average size distribution of AgNPs/TA in a colloidal solution was found to be 79.20 nm and the surface charge was monitored as −28.2 mV. The antibacterial activities of these capped nanoparticles alone and in synergism with selected fluoroquinolones (ofloxacin, sparfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and gemifloxacin) and macrolides (erythromycin and azithromycin) were assessed on selected Gram-negative as well as Gram-positive organisms by employing the disc diffusion method. Antioxidant activity against the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) was also evaluated using the standard assay method. The antibacterial activity of the antibiotics has been increased against studied microorganisms, showing the positive synergistic effect of the capped nanoparticles. A potential therapeutic application of AgNPs/TA in combination with antibiotics is determined from the results of the present research. These capped nanoparticles also possess good antioxidant activity and, therefore, can be used in various fields of biomedical sciences.

Silver nanoparticles modified by water-soluble leaning tower[6]arenes for sensing and catalysis.

A carboxylated leaning tower[6]arene sodium salt is used as an efficient stabiliser for the one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The resulting hybrid material with good dispersion, excellent stability and narrow size distribution could serve as a multifunctional platform for sensing and catalysis applications.

Garcinia mangostana Shell and Tradescantia spathacea Leaf Extract- Mediated One-pot Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles with Effective Antifungal Properties

Background: The feasibility of plant extracts for metallic nanoparticle fabrication has been demonstrated. Each plant species impacts differently on formed nanoparticles, thus specific plants need to be explored in detail. Objective: Continuing the fabrication of nanoparticles using green method, Garcinia mangostana shell and Tradescantia spathacea leaf extract are exploited as reducing sources to form two types of silver nanoparticles (GMS-AgNPs and TSL-AgNPs) less than 50 nm. Methods: Structural characterization of GMS-AgNPs and TSL-AgNPs was performed by ultravioletvisible spectrophotometry (UV-vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (EDAX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Antifungal tests of GMS-AgNPs and TSL-AgNPs were performed with Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, and Fusarium oxysporum. Results: UV-vis spectra with the 440-nm peak demonstrate the silver nanoparticle formation. FTIR analysis shows the GMS-AgNPs and TSL-AgNPs modified by organic functional groups. The SEM and TEM images indicate that the GMS-AgNPs are spherical shaped with rough edged, while the TSL-AgNPs are spherical shape with smooth surface. The GMS-AgNP average size (15.8 nm) is smaller than TSL-AgNP (22.4 nm). In addition, antifungal tests using Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, and Fusarium oxysporum reveal that GMS-AgNPs and TSL-AgNPs can significantly inhibit the proliferation of these fungal strains. Conclusion: Garcinia mangostana shell and Tradescantia spathacea leaf extract as renewable and eco-friendly resources playing a dual role for nanoparticle biosynthesis create GMS-AgNPs and TSL-AgNPs with high antifungal efficiency for biomedical or agricultural applications.

Synthetic tethered silver nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide for alkaline oxygen reduction catalysis

There is currently an enormous drive to move away from the use of Pt group metals in catalysis, particularly for fuel cells, because of their increasing rarity and cost. Simultaneously, there have been advances in the application of graphene supported nanoparticular catalysts. However, these Pt-free, graphene supported catalysts can be complex to produce, show poor catalytic activity and degrade quickly due to particle agglomeration or isolation. Herein, we report a one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles (NPs) tethered to a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) template via organic linkages. This is one of the few silver precursor formations that have been combined with graphene oxide (GO) to simultaneously establish linkage binding sites, reduce GO and yield tethered nanoparticles. These materials are shown to efficiently catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline environments, with aminoethanol linkages to 21.55 ± 2.88 nm Ag particles exhibiting the highest catalytic activity via the four-electron pathway. This method, therefore, offers a straightforward route to produce effective catalysts from inexpensive precursors, which could be developed further for significant industrial application.Graphical abstract

Facile one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles encapsulated in natural polymeric urushiol for marine antifouling.

Silver nanoparticle-based coatings have been regarded as promising candidates for marine antifouling. However, current toxic fabrication methods also lead to environment risks. Nanoparticle agglomeration, poor compatibility with polymer, and rapid release of Ag+ result in short-term efficacy. In this study, a facile one-pot synthesis method of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) encapsulated in polymeric urushiol (PUL) was developed. AgNPs were synthesized in situ by natural urushiol, serving as a reductant, dispersant and surfactant. Simultaneously, silver nitrate catalyzed the polymerization of urushiol into PUL. This in situ reduction method made AgNPs uniformly distributed in the polymer matrix. The binding between the AgNPs and the PUL resulted in the stable release of Ag+. Results showed the antibacterial rate of a 0.1% AgNPs coating is 100% in laboratory experiments. This environment-friendly coating showed good microbial inhibition performance with long-term (120 days) marine antifouling efficacy. This study shows the potential of preparing an eco-friendly coating with long-term marine antifouling ability.

Castor oil derivatives in the environmentally friendly one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles: application in cysteine sensing

Natural products-mediated synthesis has become quite an interesting route for the ecofriendly production of nanomaterials. However, products employed in natura may require long reaction times and high temperatures that lead to non-ideal particle-size distribution. In this work, we developed an optimized one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles using isolated ricinoleic acid (extracted from castor bean plant) and its epoxidized form as both reducer and stabilizer agents to convert silver ions into silver nanoparticles at room temperature. Through a design of experiments, we discovered that the epoxidized form of the ricinoleic acid is far more effective than its unmodified counterpart in terms of reaction time and homogeneity of nanoparticles. The silver nanoaparticles were then evaluated as functional chromogenic probes for cysteine sensing, allowing for direct naked-eye detection and a limit of detection of 25.37 μmol L−1. Cysteine sensing mechanisms are also discussed in this work. This approach reinforces the advantages in using purified natural products over their direct natural sources.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles from a Desmodium adscendens extract and its antibacterial evaluation on wound dressing material.

The one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the medium-polar extract of Desmodium adscendens (Sw.) DC. is presented here as an alternative synthesis of metal NPs. Characterisation of the formed NPs showed polydispersed AgNPs ranging from 15 to 100 nm where the concentration of metal ions was found to play a role in the size and shape of the prepared NPs. It could be established that the flavonoids, saponins, and alkaloids present in the extract acted as both reducing and stabilising agents during the formation of the capped metal NPs. This means of NP synthesis was also employed during the in situ immobilisation of AgNPs on gauze and plaster. An evaluation of the antibacterial activity of the medium-polar D. adscendens extract, AgNPs suspended in solution, and the immobilised AgNPs against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Bacillus cereus (ATCC 11778), and Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) showed high efficacy against the latter in particular. This suggests that gauze, dilute silver nitrate solutions, and D. adscendens extract could be used successfully in the simple in situ preparation of effective antibacterial wound dressings.

One-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles using folic acid as a reagent for colorimetric and fluorimetric detections of 6-mercaptopurine at nanomolar concentration

A simple and versatile strategy was developed for dual detection (colorimetric and fluorimetric) of 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) using folic acid (FA) fabricated silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as a probe. The optical properties (surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band and fluorescence) of FA-Ag NPs were strongly influenced by the addition of 6-MP. The abrupt change in absorbance of FA-Ag NPs was observed with increasing concentration of 6-MP, resulting a slight blue-shift in the SPR band and a color change from yellow to colorless, which confirms the oxidation of Ag0 NPs to Ag+ ion. Advantage is taken of the fact that FA is displaced from the surface of the Ag NPs, which progressively enhanced the fluorescence intensity of FA with increasing concentration of 6-MP. The perfect linear variations of absorbance at 399nm and emission peak at 448nm with 6-MP concentration was observed in range of 20•1000 and 5•300nM by UV•vis and fluorescence spectrometric methods, enabling the use of probe as a dual probe for quantification of 6-MP. Moreover, the probe shows excellent anti-disturbance ability when exposed to a series of interfering other organic, inorganic and biomolecules and can be applied to the determination of 6-MP in real samples with the detection limits of 13.2 and 2.3nM by colorimetric and fluorimetric methods, which suggests that the present method has a great potential of application for assay of 6-MP in pharmaceutical and biological samples.

Size-controlled biofabrication of silver nanoparticles using the Merremia emarginata leaf extract: Toxicity on Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) and non-target mosquito predators

Mosquito-borne diseases represent a major human and animal health problem in all tropical and subtropical countries worldwide. The synthesis of eco-friendly metal nanoparticles is a fast-growing branch of current nanoscience with a number of biomedical and entomological implications. In this study, we investigated the one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using a cheap leaf extract of Merremia emarginata (Convolvulaceae). Bio-reduced Ag NPs were characterized by UV–visible spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. SEM, TEM and AFM morphological nanocharacterization showed that this synthesis led to the production of size-controlled Ag NPs, ranging from 25 to 65nm. The acute toxicity of M. emarginata leaf extract and biosynthesized Ag NPs was evaluated against third instar larvae of the malaria vector Anopheles stephensi, the dengue and Zika virus vector Aedes aegypti and the filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatus. Compared to the leaf aqueous extract, Ag NPs showed higher toxicity against A. stephensi, A. aegypti, and C. quinquefasciatus with LC50 values of 8.36, 9.20 and 10.02μg/mL, respectively. M. emarginata-fabricated Ag NPs were found safer to non-target aquatic biocontrol agents Anisops bouvieri, Diplonychus indicus and Gambusia affinis, with LC50 ranging from 415.61 to 25,153.46μg/mL. However, although it has been proven the AgNPs fabricated in the present study are more effective if compared to the crude M. emarginata extract, they still exert some toxicity on biocontrol agents, thus further research is required to produce more eco-friendly formulations for field purposes.

A Facile One-Pot Synthesis of Eco-Friendly Nanoparticles Using Carissa carandas: Ovicidal and Larvicidal Potential on Malaria, Dengue and Filariasis Mosquito Vectors

Mosquito-borne diseases represent a major human and animal health problem in all tropical and subtropical countries worldwide. In this study, we investigated the one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using a cheap leaf extract of Carissa carandas (Apocynaceae). Bio-reduced AgNPs were characterized by UV–visible spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The acute toxicity of C. carandas extract and green-synthesized AgNPs was evaluated on eggs and larvae of Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. AgNPs showed high toxicity against A. stephensi, A. aegypti, and C. quinquefasciatus larvae with LC50 values of 14.33, 15.69 and 16.95 μg/mL, respectively. A single treatment with AgNPs tested at 60 μg/mL led to no egg hatchability. The egg rafts of C. quinquefasciatus were more resistant to the toxic action of AgNPs if compared to A. aegypti and A. stephensi. C. carandas-fabricated AgNPs were found safer to non-target organisms Anisops bouvieri, Diplonychus indicus and Gambusia affinis, with LC50 ranging from 1097.87 to 17249.89 µg/ml. Overall, this research shed light on the mosquitocidal potential of C. carandas, a potential bio-resource for rapid, cheap and effective synthesis of poly-disperse and stable silver nanocrystals.

Facile and green fabrication of silver nanoparticles on a polyoxometalate for Li-ion battery

In the present study, we report the green and one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on as-prepared novel polyoxometalate {[Ni2,5(Hpen)4(PW9O34)] · 5H2O} (POM) without any reducing agent and its application as improved anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The structure of the AgNPs involved POM (AgNPs/POM) nanocomposite was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesized POM was also characterized by elemental analysis and thermal analysis. The electrochemical performances of the POM, AgNPs, and AgNPs/POM composites were measured for charge/discharge specific capacities at different current rates in CR2032 coin-type cells. The prepared AgNPs/POM composite showed a high specific gravimetric capacity of about 1760 mAh g−1 and long-term cycle stability.

Density Functional Theoretical Modeling, Electrostatic Surface Potential and Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Studies on Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles: Observation of 400 pM Sensitivity to Explosives

Interaction of adsorbate on charged surfaces, orientation of the analyte on the surface, and surface enhancement aspects have been studied. These aspects have been explored in details to explain the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) spectra of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW or CL-20), a well-known explosive, and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) using one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles via biosynthetic route using natural precursor extracts of clove and pepper. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (bio Ag Nps) have been characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. SERS studies conducted using bio Ag Nps on different water insoluble analytes, such as CL-20 and TNT, lead to SERS signals at concentration levels of 400 pM. The experimental findings have been corroborated with density functional computational results, electrostatic surface potential calculations, Fukui functions and ζ potential measurements.

One-pot synthesis of PVA-capped silver nanoparticles their characterization and biomedical application

The rapid one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles (SNPs) at room temperature by using hydrazine hydrate as reducing agent and polyvinyl alcohol as stabilizing agent is reported. The SNPs were characterized with UV-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The synthesized silver nanoparticle shows surface plasmon resonance at 410 nm. The XRD reveals face-centered cubic (FCC) structure of SNPs. FE-SEM, AFM and TEM show that nanoparticles have spherical morphology with diameters in the range of 10–60 nm. The antimicrobial activity of synthesized hybrid material against strains of four different bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococus aureus, Proteus vulgaris), that are commonly found in hospitals has been studied. The results indicate that such particles have potential applications in biotechnology and biomedical science.

One-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles decorated poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) nanotubes for chemical sensor application

Ag nanoparticle (NP) decorated PEDOT nanotubes (NTs) were constructed using metal ion reduction-mediated vapor deposition polymerization (VDP). Ag NPs/PEDOT NTs were obtained by one-pot synthesis because PEDOT can reduce Ag cations to Ag NPs. Ag NPs/PEDOT NTs efficiently sensed NH3 due to an increased surface area and improved conductivity originating from oxidation of PEDOT by Ag NPs. This study evaluated increasing concentrations of AgNO3 in Ag NPs/PEDOT NTs to determine the optimal amount for NH3 sensing. We found that as the Ag NP concentration increased and passed a specific threshold amount, they aggregated and reduced the gas-sensing performance. Additionally, the gas response of Ag NPs/PEDOT NTs to NH3 was evaluated in depth.
