Silica micro-rod resonator-based Kerr frequency comb for high-speed short-reach optical interconnects.

Conventional data center interconnects rely on power-hungry arrays of discrete wavelength laser sources. However, growing bandwidth demand severely challenges ensuring the power and spectral efficiency toward which data center interconnects tend to strive. Kerr frequency combs based on silica microresonators can replace multiple laser arrays, easing the pressure on data center interconnect infrastructure. Therefore, we experimentally demonstrate a bit rate of up to 100 Gbps/λ employing 4-level pulse amplitude modulated signal transmission over a 2 km long short-reach optical interconnect that can be considered a record using any Kerr frequency comb light source, specifically based on a silica micro-rod. In addition, data transmission using the non-return to zero on-off keying modulation format is demonstrated to achieve 60 Gbps/λ. The silica micro-rod resonator-based Kerr frequency comb light source generates an optical frequency comb in the optical C-band with 90 GHz spacing between optical carriers. Data transmission is supported by frequency domain pre-equalization techniques to compensate amplitude-frequency distortions and limited bandwidths of electrical system components. Additionally, achievable results are enhanced with offline digital signal processing, implementing post-equalization using feed-forward and feedback taps.

Attaining classical capacity per unit cost of noisy bosonic Gaussian channels

I show that classical capacity per unit cost of noisy bosonic Gaussian channels can be attained by employing a generalized on-off keying modulation format and a projective measurement of individual output states. This means that neither complicated collective measurements nor phase-sensitive detection is required to communicate over optical channels at the ultimate limit imposed by laws of quantum mechanics in the limit of low average cost.

Improved transmission length in the presences of ambient noise and scintillation effect using duobinary modulation in 40 Gbps free space optical channel

AbstractFree space optical (FSO) communication has gained significant popularity in recent years due to large bandwidth, license‐free spectrum, high data rates, less power consumption, and low mass requirements. However, system performance strongly depends on atmospheric conditions and ambient noise. In this letter, the duobinary modulation technique is applied and the system performance is investigated in the presence of ambient noise. The system is evaluated on the basis of Q‐factor, eye diagram, input power, transmission distance, and bit error rate. A significant improvement is observed in the presence of noise while using duobinary modulation. This study exploits extensive simulations to investigate the performance of the system. All simulations are performed for a single link of FSO communication network having a data rate of 40 Gbps in the Optisystem simulator and ambient noise is created using LEDs. After the exhaustive set of simulations, a significant improvement in transmission length is observed. It is also observed that at low input power, doubinary modulation provides better results when compared with on‐off keying (OOK) format. Scintillation effect has also be observed for doubinary modulation and compared with OOK modulation format. It is concluded that doubinary modulation provides better results in the presence of low and moderate scintillation.

Ion Channel Based Bio-Synthetic Modulator for Diffusive Molecular Communication.

In diffusion-based molecular communication (DMC), a transmitter nanomachine is responsible for signal modulation. Thereby, the transmitter has to be able to control the release of the signaling molecules employed for representing the transmitted information. In nature, an important class of control mechanisms for releasing molecules from cells utilizes ion channels which are pore-forming proteins across the cell membrane. The opening and closing of the ion channels is controlled by a gating parameter. In this paper, an ion channel based modulator for DMC is proposed which controls the rate of molecule release from the transmitter by modulating a gating parameter signal. Exploiting the capabilities of the proposed modulator, an on-off keying modulation technique is introduced and the corresponding average modulated signal, i.e., the average release rate of the molecules from the transmitter, is analyzed. However, since the modulated signal is random in nature, it may deviate from its average. Therefore, the concept of modulator noise is introduced and the statistics of the modulated signal are investigated. Finally, by assuming a simple transparent receiver, the performance of the proposed on-off keying modulation format is studied. The derived analytical expressions for the average modulated signal are confirmed with particle based simulations. Our numerical results reveal that performance estimates of DMC systems obtained based on the assumption of instantaneous molecule release at the transmitter may substantially deviate from the performance achieved with practical modulators.

Steerable pencil beams for multi-Gbps indoor optical wireless communication.

We report a novel optical wireless communication (OWC) system solution that supports multi-Gbps (Gigabit-per-second) capacity for indoors. Narrow beams, termed as pencil beams, are directed to wireless users using a tunable laser and a passive diffractive optical element. This enables a wide coverage of ultra-high-capacity communication links to serve multiple network users simultaneously. Experimental results demonstrating data rates of up to 10 Gbps, with on-off keying modulation format, over a distance of more than 2.5 m, are reported. Error-free links beam-steered over a total wavelength range of 130 nm, with steering angle of 17.16°, have been achieved. This system is proposed for short-range OWC and is promising for seamless integration in in-building optical networks.

Stimulated Raman crosstalk in bi-directional pumped distributed Raman amplifier for DPSK and OOK modulation format

Novel closed form formulae are derived to study crosstalk degradation due to stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in WDM systems employing bi-directional pumped distributed Raman amplifier (DRA). They are applied to evaluate the crosstalk performance of different modulation formats, especially differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) and ON–OFF keying (OOK), which are widely used in optical communication. Further, SRS crosstalk is evaluated for different data rates and pulse shapes prevalent in optical data transmission. Next, crosstalk is calculated for different pumping schemes as special cases of bi-directional pumped DRA. The study shows that minimum SRS crosstalk can be achieved for 40Gb/s RZ-DPSK signal with 33.3% duty cycle in WDM system employing backward pumped DRA.

Single and Dual-Level Minimum Shift Keying Optical Transmission Systems

We present optical transmission systems employing minimum shift keying modulation formats of single and dual-amplitude level under linear, weakly nonlinear, strongly nonlinear variation of the lightwave carrier within a bit-period depending on whether the phase variation within a symbol period is linear or nonlinear. These formats are externally modulated, incoherently and differentially detected based on the Mach-Zehnder delay interferometric optical balanced receiver. Transmission performance of these optical transmission systems is evaluated in terms of receiver sensitivity, amplification stimulated emission noise loading, dispersion tolerances. These performance characteristics are compared with return-to-zero (RZ) differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and carrier-suppressed RZ on-off keying modulation formats. Accurate bit-error ratios are obtained and confirmed by different statistical techniques: Monte Carlo, single-Gaussian or multiple Gaussian distributions and generalized Pareto distribution statistical methods, especially when the eye diagrams are distorted. Among the three minimum shift keying (MSK) types, the weakly nonlinear optical MSK is found to be the most promising because of its robust transmission performance and more importantly, its reduced-complexity of the electrical driving signals for transmitter in modulating the lightwave carrier as compared to the linear MSK counterpart. Transmission performance of dual-level MSK optical transmission systems depends on the intensity-splitting ratio of the two levels. The performance of three ratios: 0.7/0.3,0.8/0.2, and 0.9/0.1 are demonstrated. The spectral attributes of 80 Gb/s dual-level MSK optical signals for these three ratios are similar to each other and compatible with that of 40 Gb/s optical MSK, but narrower than that of 40 Gb/s optical nonreturn-to-zero DPSK, hence high spectral efficiency of the dual-level MSK.

Tunable 105 ns optical delay for 80 Gb/s RZ-DQPSK, 40 Gb/s RZ-DPSK, and 40 Gb/s RZ-OOK signals using wavelength conversion and chromatic dispersion

We demonstrate a variable, optical-delay element using tunable wavelength conversion in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, dispersion-compensating fiber and intrachannel dispersion compensation. A delay of up to 105 ns is demonstrated using 80 Gb/s return-to-zero differential-quadrature phase-shift keying, 40 Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying, and 40 Gb/s return-to-zero on-off keying modulation formats. Bit-error rates <10(-9) are demonstrated for each waveform at various delay settings.

Effect of a Raman Co-Pump's RIN on the BER for Signal Transmission Using ON–OFF Keying Modulation Format

This paper theoretically studies the effect of the relative intensity noise (RIN), which is transferred to the signal from a Raman co-pump, on the bit-error rate (BER). We show that a given amount of the transferred RIN degrades the BER by about an order of magnitude more than does the same amount of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) added to the signal. We investigate how this effect depends on such parameters as the duty ratio of the signal pulses and on the amount of the ASE that has been added to the output signal along the transmission line.

Mitigation of pattern-induced degradation in SOA-based all-optical OTDM demultiplexers by using RZ-DPSK modulation format

In this letter, we propose and demonstrate to employ return-to-zero differential phase-shifted-keying (RZ-DPSK) modulation format in optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) systems so as to mitigate the pattern-induced degradation in semiconductor optical amplifier-based all-optical demultiplexers. Experimental results prove that RZ-DPSK can effectively alleviate such impairment with negligible induced power penalty, and thus, is more robust than the conventional RZ ON-OFF keying modulation format in OTDM systems.
