Key Performance Indicators in Occupational Health and Safety of Hospitals: A systematic review with meta-analysis protocol

Abstract Objective: The purpose for conducting the review is to examine studies which have been carried out on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in hospitals using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). We will determine if these studies take into account institutional categories. Introduction: The developing application of KPIs in hospitals takes into account some particular conditions for OHS in the health sector. The application of KPIs in OHS of hospitals is connected to institutional directives for OHS. We will determine if these studies take into account institutional categories such as Protective and Preventive Services (PPS), Risk Assessment (RA) and Management Systems (OHSMS). Inclusion criteria: We will include studies which use KPIs in the evaluation of OHS in hospitals, (those related directly and indirectly to OHS). We exclude the following categories of study: Studies which use KPIs in hospital evaluations, but which are not oriented to OHS and studies which include KPIs in evaluating various organizations but not exclusively hospitals. Methods: We will conduct electronic searches for eligible studies within each of the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, Heal-link, Google Scholar. With the help of the JBI tool and using inclusion/exclusion criteria, two independent reviewers will determine which studies will be selected or not. Those studies which fulfill the inclusion criteria will be subjected to a post analysis data procedure. We intend to use mixed methods and workflow software. Results (as expected outcomes): Examination of the relationship between KPIs in OHS of hospitals and the institutional representations for OHS, using the Data Analysis methods. Conclusions: The conclusions will depend on the results of the relationship between KPIs in OHS of hospitals and the institutional representations.

Artificial intelligence in advancing occupational health and safety: an encapsulation of developments.

In an era characterized by dynamic technological advancements, the well-being of the workforce remains a cornerstone of progress and sustainability. The evolving industrial landscape in the modern world has had a considerable influence on occupational health and safety (OHS). Ensuring the well-being of workers and creating safe working environments are not only ethical imperatives but also integral to maintaining operational efficiency and productivity. We aim to review the advancements that have taken place with a potential to reshape workplace safety with integration of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven new technologies to prevent occupational diseases and promote safety solutions. The published literature was identified using scientific databases of Embase, PubMed, and Google scholar including a lower time bound of 1974 to capture chronological advances in occupational disease detection and technological solutions employed in industrial set-ups. AI-driven technologies are revolutionizing how organizations approach health and safety, offering predictive insights, real-time monitoring, and risk mitigation strategies that not only minimize accidents and hazards but also pave the way for a more proactive and responsive approach to safeguarding the workforce. As industries embrace the transformative potential of AI, a new frontier of possibilities emerges for enhancing workplace safety. This synergy between OHS and AI marks a pivotal moment in the quest for safer, healthier, and more sustainable workplaces.

The Health Education Concerning the Influence Of Knowledge And Attitudes On The “Concise, Neat, Clean, Careful, Diligent” Work Culture Behavior Of Employees

Background: Training and socialization on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) throughout 2022 have been carried out to achieve ISO. From the audit results in 2023, it has been found, among others, that the application of “Concise, neat, clean, careful, and diligent” needs to be developed further. The purpose of this activity is to provide Dinas Kesehatan Kabupaten Kediri Kediri employees with knowledge about “Concise, Neat, Clean, Careful, Diligent”. Methods: Participants in this activity were Dinas Kesehatan Kabupaten Kediri employees, and the methods used were lectures, discussions, and questions and answers. The data collection technique used was a questionnaire. Results: The results of the pre-test and post-test showed that only a small proportion had good knowledge (37%), positive attitudes towards the “Concise, Neat, Clean, Careful, Diligent” (30%), and good “Concise, Neat, Clean, Careful, Diligent” behaviour (33%). It was found that a p-value of 0.001 <0.05 indicated that there was a significant influence between “Concise, Neat, Clean, Careful, Diligent” knowledge and “Concise, Neat, Clean, Careful, Diligent” behaviour and a p-value of 0.010 <0.05 indicated that there was a significant influence between the “Concise, Neat, Clean, Careful, Diligent” attitudes and “Concise, Neat, Clean, Careful, Diligent” behavior of Dinas Kesehatan Kabupaten Kediri employees. Conclusion: This community service activity went smoothly, thanks to the extraordinary enthusiasm of the employees in following all the planned activities. This activity positively impacted and refreshed information about the “Concise, Neat, Clean, Careful, Diligent” Work Culture, contributing to increased knowledge, especially for employees. In addition, this service effort also received support and appreciation from the Dinas Kesehatan Kabupaten Kediri office

Sport is a series of regular and routine physical activities carried out by individuals to achieve certain goals. Sport is a physical activity that is planned to develop various physical components. Those who perform high-intensity sports activities become tired. Fatigue can generally refer to the body losing energy until it cannot move. Work systems and human resources both depend on occupational safety and health (OSH). This study aims to determine the understanding of employee lecturers on massage services at Bina Darma University's sports massage clinic. This research is descriptive research. The research population is patients who utilize massage services at Bina Darma University's sports massage clinic. The sampling technique used is incidental sampling with a sample size of 20 people. The data collection technique used a questionnaire. Data analysis using descriptive analysis and percentage. The results of research at the Bina Darma University Sport The results of the research at Bina Darma University Sport Massage Clinic in 20 people on each question item became in the very satisfying category of 85.75%, in the satisfying category of 76.75%, in the unsatisfactory category of 2.5% and there were no patients who gave an assessment of the sports massage clinic in the very unsatisfactory category.

Occupational safety practice among metal workers in Bangladesh: a community-level study

BackgroundThe overall information on occupational health and safety (OHS)-related knowledge and workplace practices are scarce in Bangladesh. This study aimed to (i) examine the prevalence of occupational injuries, (ii) explore the level of OHS-related knowledge and practice among workers and associated factors, and (iii) investigate the socioeconomic factors and OHS-related knowledge and practice scores as determinants of injury among metal workers at a community setting in Bangladesh.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study conducted on all the functional metal workshops in a community of a town. The sociodemographic characteristics, history of injury and its consequences, and the state of knowledge and practice were measured using descriptive statistics. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to measure the association between practice scores and sociodemographic factors and knowledge. Logistic regression was conducted to get the odds ratio of getting injured.ResultsA high annual rate (82.9%) of occupational injuries was documented in a one-year timeframe and the majority (81.1%) of injured workers lost more than three working days (median 20 days). Workers working in workshops with more than three workers were 3.3 times more likely to be injured [AOR = 3.33, 95% CI = 1.16, 9.58] compared to the workers in factories with one to three workers. Most of the workers had the basic knowledge related to OHS but the mean practice score was very low, 1.86 (SD 1.17). Higher education, lower monthly family income, and being an owner significantly led to higher practice scores.ConclusionsThe OHS-related knowledge was not properly translated into good workplace practices in small informal metal workshops because of the absence of implementation of OHS policies and monitoring by the relevant authority. Government should support the informal metal working sector to increase awareness and skills for the prevention and proper management of injuries and risks, and to ensure access to safety equipment and a safe environment.

Estimating the financial benefits of employers’ occupational health and safety expenditures

While employer expenditures on occupational health and safety (OHS) in high income countries can be substantial, the financial benefits of these expenditures are not well described. The objective of this study is to apply a transparent methodology to estimate the financial return to employers from OHS expenditures in the Canadian province of Ontario. There were three phases in the study workplan: establishing an accurate estimate of the average direct cost of disabling work injury or illness; identifying employers in the construction, transportation and manufacturing sectors with a low incidence of work-related injury and illness; and the application of a set of plausible assumptions to estimate the financial benefits of OHS expenditures in this sample of employers with strong OHS performance. Financial benefits combined estimates of the tangible financial benefits arising from averted disabling work-related injury and illness and intangible financial benefits associated with improved employee retention and morale, improved production quality and strengthened corporate reputation. Applying these plausible assumptions, the average return on OHS expenditures was 1.24 for 289 manufacturing employers, 2.14 for 56 transportation employers and 1.34 for 88 construction employers. There was variation around these average return on investment values; 138 employers (32% of the sample) had an estimated return on investment less than 1.0, and 295 employers (68% of the sample) had a return on investment estimate greater than 1.0. The estimates of average financial return among large Ontario employers in three important economic sectors, while moderate, are positive, in the range of 1.24 to 2.14. These estimates are consistent with the range of estimates available from research in this field over the past decade.

The role of virtual and augmented reality in occupational health and safety training of employees in PV power systems and evaluation with a sustainability perspective

The problems of foreign dependency in energy and the orientation towards national/international environmental policies encourage investments in renewable energy systems. In renewable energy systems (RES), photovoltaic (PV) systems based on solar energy are increasing every year. This situation reveals the need for qualified employees whose working area is photovoltaic systems. This study has conducted a literature search on occupational health and safety (OHS) issues in PV power systems. At the same time, field studies and expert interviews were conducted to examine the OHS practices and training received in the work areas. In this direction, the importance of OHS requirements and training for OHS success in PV power systems has been emphasized. The importance of training has been expressed to increase OHS's performance and success in the PV power system fields. In this study, sample gamification scenarios were created for two different activities in working at height during the installation of the PV. Algorithms have been developed for improving VR/AR applications in OHS training with the sample gamification scenarios created and to support the dissemination of these training applications. In this way, it is aimed to explain the necessary information for VR/AR technologies at an academic level and to contribute to content developers, researchers, relevant institutions and organizations from a sustainability perspective.

Disaster risk reduction: Integrating sustainable development goals and occupational safety and health in festival and event management.

The purpose of this article is to develop a theoretical disaster risk reduction model, creating a virtuous cycle of knowledge and action across the festival and events industry, based on occupational safety and health (OSH) strategic objectives, as informed by a systematic literature review. The main constructs of this conceptual article are explored through a systematic literature review. Sources include publications of key stakeholders in the festival and event industry, applicable global directives, strategic documents of relevant governmental and non-governmental organisations and academic publications. From the data gathered in the systematic literature review it can be surmised that sustainable development goals (SDGs) related research in tourism, festivals, events and OSH is lacking in quantity and there is room for these aspects to be addressed in future research to ensure that these fields of study make a more substantial contribution to disaster risk reduction in festival and event management. This article is limited to secondary data collected through a systematic literature review, supported by additional literature to inform a theoretical framework incorporating SDGs, disaster risk reduction and OSH strategic objectives for festivals and events. Sustainable development goals are aimed at achieving a sustainable future for all. The detrimental effect of OSH incidents can be counterproductive to achieving such goals and should therefore be closely monitored and managed. Festival and event managers should thus take cognisance of the importance of OSH through a plan of action, benchmarked against best practice, to allow for enhanced disaster risk management. This article investigates the concepts of sustainability, disaster risk reduction, OSH, events and festival management and combines the concepts in a unique manner.

Supplier absorptive capacity: learning via boundary objects in sustainability-oriented supplier development initiatives

PurposeTo study the learning processes and mechanisms involved in sustainability-oriented supplier development (SSD), including how knowledge is transmitted by the buyer and how it is received, understood and internalised by the supplier.Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory longitudinal multi-case study approach is adopted. The research context is a social SSD project focusing on occupational health and safety (OHS) management at four supplier factories. The paper draws on the constructs of absorptive capacity and boundary objects.FindingsThe development of a supplier's absorptive capacity for OHS management is triggered by the transfer of boundary objects that are created by the buyer. Findings suggest that each supplier starts explorative learning in a similar and passive way in order to accept the knowledge, but then each supplier proactively transforms and exploits the knowledge through continuous sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring loops that develop the boundary objects in a way that fits their own needs and contexts, incorporating the objects into organisational structures and routines.Research limitations/implicationsThe research furthers the understanding of the development of supplier absorptive capacity for sustainability via SSD projects, including how it is triggered and sustained. The impact of ostensive and performative aspects of boundary objects on knowledge transfer is presented. Finally, insight is provided into how absorptive capacity and dynamic capabilities are linked in the context of SSD.Practical implicationsBuying firms should seek to develop boundary objects that can trigger and maintain learning momentum for sustainability at supplier organisations in addition to effectively transferring SSD-related sustainability knowledge. There is also a need to allow for sufficient flexibility in the design of the boundary objects, and to pay sufficient attention to how suppliers contextualise and embed them into their own organisations, providing support for this process where necessary. For the supplier, establishing structures and routines for OHS management can help to prepare for future audits, thereby reducing audit fatigue.Originality/valueThe paper contributes to the supply chain learning literature by exploring the development of supplier absorptive capacity for sustainability triggered by the focal buying firm. It sheds new light on the role of boundary objects for facilitating knowledge transfer and learning between supply chain members in the context of SSD projects.

Strengthening Occupational Safety and Health Policy in Malaysia: Exploring the Awareness of Civil Servants

Accident and fatality rates in the workplace are anticipated to rise constantly over the next few years. Extensive occupational safety and health studies have been conducted in various sectors, yet little attention has been paid to the public sector. This study aims to explore civil servants’ awareness on occupational safety and health (OSH). A survey was conducted in a public university to examine the relationship between OSH awareness and the civil servants’ safety understanding, self-preventive attitudes and self-care practices. The findings revealed that the majority of the respondents have a high understanding of OSH. A correlation analysis indicated that safety understanding, self-preventive attitudes and self-care practice have a positive association with OSH awareness. The highest correlation is between self-preventive attitudes and OSH awareness (r = .732, p < .05). The multiple correlation disclosed F (3,128) = 92.93, p < .000 with an R2 of .24. A significant linear relationship between safety understanding, self-preventive attitudes and self-care practices predicting the OSH awareness with the strongest correlation is between self-preventive attitudes (β = .29, p < .05). The findings suggest that public organisations focus on implementing the OSH guidelines and regulations to minimise occupational hazards at work.

Impacts of quality management systems on occupational safety and health in industrial laboratories

The study aimed to identify the impact of adopting quality management systems on occupational safety and health (OSH) in industrial laboratories. A questionnaire was developed to study the impacts of five soft total quality management (TQM) dimensions on OSH. These dimensions are recognition, training, teamwork, leadership and ethics. The collected data were analysed by using descriptive statistical analysis, multiple regression analysis and analysis of variance. The study revealed that the five TQM variables proposed in this study have an overall impact on the status of OSH from the view point of respondents working in accredited and unaccredited laboratories. The study revealed that leadership and training ranked among the most important variables that affect the status of OSH from the view point of respondents working in accredited laboratories. Ethics is the only important variable that affects the status of OSH from the view point of respondents working in unaccredited laboratories.

Organizational factors associated with health worker protection during the COVID-19 pandemic in four provinces of South Africa

BackgroundHealth workers, in short supply in many low-and-middle-income countries, are at increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study aimed to assess how South Africa, prepared to protect its health workers from SARS-CoV-2 infection.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study design applying participatory action research in four provinces of South Africa. A semi-structured questionnaire and a qualitative observational HealthWISE walkthrough risk assessment was carried out to collect data on occupational safety and health (OSH) systems in 45 hospitals across four provinces to identify factors associated with health worker protection. Adapting the International Labour Organization (ILO) and World Health Organization (WHO) HealthWISE tool, we compiled compliance scores through walkthrough surveys. We used logistic regression to analyze the relationship between readiness indicators and the actual implementation of protective measures.ResultsWe found that health facilities in all four provinces had SARS-CoV-2 plans for the general population but no comprehensive OHS plan for health workers. Provincial Departments of Health (PDoH) varied in how they were organized to respond: Provinces A and D had an OSH SARS-CoV-2 provincial coordinating team and a dedicated budget for occupational health; Province A had an occupational health doctor and nurse; while Province B had an occupational health nurse; Province A and D PDoHs had functional OSH committees; and Province D had conducted some health risk assessments specific to SARS-CoV-2. However, none of the assessed health facilities had an acceptable HealthWISE compliance score (≥ 75%) due to poor ventilation and inadequate administrative control measures. While the supply of personal protective equipment was adequate, it was often not worn properly. Our study found that having an OSH SARS-CoV-2 policy was significantly associated with higher personal protective equipment and ventilation scores. In addition, our analysis showed that hospitals with higher compliancescores had significantly lower infection rates (IRR 0.98; 95% CI: 0.97, 0.98).ConclusionsDespite some initial preparedness, greater effort to protect health workers is still warranted. Low-and-middle-income countries may need to pay more attention to OSH systems and consider using tools, such as ILO/WHO HealthWISE tool, to protect health workers’ health.

Analysis of the interaction between safety measures and workers' safety awareness from the construction workers' perspective

PurposeThe research was carried out to statistically evaluate the relationship between the safety measures at the construction sites and the actual and perceived knowledge levels of the employees about these measures.Design/methodology/approachFace-to-face surveys were conducted with the workers. The survey included some perception-based questions about preventive measures at the construction site, as well as determining the level of awareness of employees on occupational health and safety (OHS) practices. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistical methods and bivariate correlation analysis.FindingsThe actual knowledge levels of workers on OHS measures in the workplace is significantly lower than their perceived knowledge levels. However, there is a positive, linear and strong relationship between the actual knowledge levels of the employees about some OHS rules applied in the workplace and the general level of knowledge they perceive about themselves. Some protective measures such as occupational safety expert, OHS board, employee representatives, training and information activities at construction sites positively affect the safety awareness of employees. However, low-frequency and documentation-intensive activities such as risk assessment, emergency activities and periodic controls have no or weak correlations.Originality/valuePerception-based opinions of construction site workers on occupational safety issues are transformed into numerical data and analyzed with a quantitative method.

In general, law enforcement on occupational safety and health (OSH) has not been well implemented in the non-formal sector. One of them is community-based tourism. The obstacles include the absence or not yet functioning of OSH institutions. In fact, the tourism industry can easily sink due to tourists' discomfort and insecurity from disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and accidents. The purpose of community service is to assist in developing the OSH Management System at Tebing Breksi. This community service will contribute to the internalization of everyone's OSH culture at Tebing Breksi that will impact the tourism sector's recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. The implementation method is through the advocacy approach, outreach, and assistance of the OSH program. The result of community service is top management policies in OSH commitment, organizational structure (the committee in charge of OSH), and hazard identification training as a requirement for making SOPs. The sustainability of the OSH management system will encourage the realization of an OSH culture for every worker in tourism services.

Transfer mechanisms for lean implementation with OHS integration in the garment industry

PurposeLean manufacturing has the potential for simultaneously improving the competitiveness and the social sustainability of the apparel industry in developing countries. However, there is limited research on the ways to a successful lean implementation in developing countries and with an emphasis on occupational health and safety (OHS) improvement.Design/methodology/approachThe paper investigates four cases of lean implementation in garment factories and uses the design science research strategy, building on the context-intervention-mechanism-outcome (CIMO) framework to identify explanatory mechanisms that can be used for designing future action.FindingsThe study identifies tangible mechanisms that can lead to successful lean implementation. The most important mechanisms relate to practical top management support, worker involvement, application of lean tools and training.Practical implicationsThe findings of this study can guide better lean implementation for the many garment factories in developing countries.Originality/valueWhile the lean literature provides general recommendations for lean implementation, knowledge about the transfer mechanisms in developing countries as well as the connections between lean and OHS is limited. This paper contributes to lean implementation theory and to the discourse of positive lean by integrating efficiency and working conditions. In addition, the paper identifies transfer mechanisms for lean implementation in the garment industry in a developing country.

Developing Standard Operational Procedures for Maintenance and Repair of Mechanical and Electrical Component in Government Building to Improving Safety Planning

To develop maintenance and repair procedures for mechanical and electrical components of government building to improve safety planning. Method of the research using content and construct validation, pilot survey and respondent survey which is then validated using Delphi Method by experts. Result of this research are In developing the maintenance and repair procedures for mechanical and electrical components of government buildings, stages are carried out in the form of identifying the organizational forms and job descriptions of the institution, identifying the components and activities of mechanical and electrical maintenance and maintenance of the building, identifying the person in charge and implementing work activities, establishing the flow of communication, identify risk events in the activity, analyse the highest risk, identify the highest risk response, and develop procedures with the addition of risk response activities. OHS planning developed in this study is risk based so that it can reduce the adverse impacts on occupational health and safety (OHS) by referring to Minister of Public Works Regulation No. 05 of 2014. This research is about how to develop standard operational procedures for mechanical and electrical components in government buildings. The current government building is a building that has a fairly old age, resulting the condition of the building has a lot of damage in various components, for instance mechanical and electrical components. If ignored, these conditions will lead to decrease the quality of the building and may eventually lead to the destruction of the building. Building maintenance and repair work is one of the solutions to maintain the reliability of the building remains functional. However, the absence of proper procedures on government buildings in one of the government agencies becomes obstacles to the implementation of the work. This causes maintenance and repair activities to be ineffective and inefficient, in addition to affecting the results obtained.

Knowledge and Understanding of Personal Protective Equipment Use among Laborer Population of the Nepalese Workforce.

The constructing laborers are mainly unskilled, untrained, migrant, socially backward, and uneducated with low bargaining power. Thus, we assessed the knowledge and prevalence on occupational safety and health (OSH) of laborers working at private constructing sites. A descriptive cross-sectional study of 229 laborers working at private constructing sites selected by 30 cluster sampling methods from the Lalitpur metropolitan city and Mahalaxmi municipality was conducted using a structured questionnaire and observation checklist. EpiData and SPSS were used for data analysis. Most of the laborers (62%) had inadequate knowledge on OSH. The level of knowledge was significantly associated with sex, education, and family type at 95% CI (p value < 0.05). The prevalence of occupational accidents within a year was 19.7% and was significantly associated with the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at 95% CI (p value < 0.05). About one-fifth of the participants had occupational accidents within a year because of the inadequate knowledge of OSH.

Guardians of Workers’ Bodies? Trade Unions and the History of Occupational Health and Safety

Critically assessing the role and influence of trade unions on occupational health and safety (OHS), and tracing their contribution to OHS discourse, is here examined through the lens of history in Britain positioned relative to international experience. The idea of trade union neglect of OHS is challenged through study of the historic role of trade unions and the more recent experience (since the 1970s) of unions’ growing interest in OHS whilst simultaneously experiencing a sharp decline in membership and the adverse impact of this disempowerment on OHS standards. Acknowledging the politics of gender shows British unions neglected occupational health and embodiment issues that impacted upon women as workers. Robust and compelling evidence from the mid-twentieth century - that unions were a powerful countervailing force to workplace dangers, as key sentinels shielding workers’ bodies - is followed by evidence of increasing occupational illnesses in the period of union decline and precarious work from c. 1980. The article urges more critical reflection on trade unions as actors and as a voice in the OHS discourse.
