On-chip single-photon chirality encircling exceptional points

Exceptional points (EPs), typically defined as the degeneracy points of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, have been investigated in various physical systems such as photonic systems. In particular, the intriguing topological structures around EPs have given rise to novel strategies for manipulating photons and the underlying mechanism is especially useful for on-chip photonic applications. Although some on-chip experiments using lasers have been reported, EP-based photonic chips working in the quantum regime have been largely elusive. Here, we propose a single-photon experiment to dynamically encircle an EP in on-chip photonic waveguides possessing passive anti-parity-time symmetry. Photon coincidences measurement reveals a chiral feature of transporting single photons, which can act as a building block for on-chip quantum devices that require asymmetric transmissions. Our findings pave the way for on-chip experimental study on the physics of EPs as well as inspiring applications for on-chip non-Hermitian quantum devices.

Multiscale simulations of growth-dominated Sb2Te phase-change material for non-volatile photonic applications

Chalcogenide phase-change materials (PCMs) are widely applied in electronic and photonic applications, such as non-volatile memory and neuro-inspired computing. Doped Sb2Te alloys are now gaining increasing attention for on-chip photonic applications, due to their growth-driven crystallization features. However, it remains unknown whether Sb2Te also forms a metastable crystalline phase upon nanoseconds crystallization in devices, similar to the case of nucleation-driven Ge-Sb-Te alloys. Here, we carry out ab initio simulations to understand the changes in optical properties of amorphous Sb2Te upon crystallization and post annealing. During the continuous transformation process, changes in the dielectric function are highly wavelength-dependent from the visible-light range towards the telecommunication band. Our finite-difference time-domain simulations based on the ab initio input reveal key differences in device output for color display and photonic memory applications upon tellurium ordering. Our work serves as an example of how multiscale simulations of materials can guide practical photonic phase-change applications.

Circular Optical Phased Array with Large Steering Range and High Resolution.

Light detection and ranging systems based on optical phased arrays and integrated silicon photonics have sparked a surge of applications over the recent years. This includes applications in sensing, free-space communications, or autonomous vehicles, to name a few. Herein, we report a design of two-dimensional optical phased arrays, which are arranged in a grid of concentric rings. We numerically investigate two designs composed of 110 and 820 elements, respectively. Both single-wavelength (1550 nm) and broadband multi-wavelength (1535 nm to 1565 nm) operations are studied. The proposed phased arrays enable free-space beam steering, offering improved performance with narrow beam divergences of only 0.5° and 0.22° for the 110-element and 820-element arrays, respectively, with a main-to-sidelobe suppression ratio higher than 10 dB. The circular array topology also allows large element spacing far beyond the sub-wavelength-scaled limits that are present in one-dimensional linear or two-dimensional rectangular arrays. Under a single-wavelength operation, a solid-angle steering between 0.21π sr and 0.51π sr is obtained for 110- and 820-element arrays, respectively, while the beam steering spans the range of 0.24π sr and 0.57π sr for a multi-wavelength operation. This work opens new opportunities for future optical phased arrays in on-chip photonic applications, in which fast, high-resolution, and broadband beam steering is necessary.

Single-Mode Emission in InP Microdisks on Si Using Au Antenna.

An important building block for on-chip photonic applications is a scaled emitter. Whispering gallery mode cavities based on III–Vs on Si allow for small device footprints and lasing with low thresholds. However, multimodal emission and wavelength stability over a wider range of temperature can be challenging. Here, we explore the use of Au nanorod antennae on InP whispering gallery mode lasers on Si for single-mode emission. We show that by proper choice of the antenna size and positioning, we can suppress the side modes of a cavity and achieve single-mode emission over a wide excitation range. We establish emission trends by varying the size of the antenna and show that the far-field radiation pattern differs significantly for devices with and without antenna. Furthermore, the antenna-induced single-mode emission is dominant from room temperature (300 K) down to 200 K, whereas the cavity without an antenna is multimodal and its dominant emission wavelength is highly temperature-dependent.

On-Chip Integrated Photonic Devices Based on Phase Change Materials

Phase change materials present a unique type of materials that drastically change their electrical and optical properties on the introduction of an external electrical or optical stimulus. Although these materials have been around for some decades, they have only recently been implemented for on-chip photonic applications. Since their reinvigoration a few years ago, on-chip devices based on phase change materials have been making a lot of progress, impacting many diverse applications at a very fast pace. At present, they are found in many interesting applications including switches and modulation; however, phase change materials are deemed most essential for next-generation low-power memory devices and neuromorphic computational platforms. This review seeks to highlight the progress thus far made in on-chip devices derived from phase change materials including memory devices, neuromorphic computing, switches, and modulators.

IP-Dip photoresist surfaces for photonic applications prepared by laser lithography and studied by AFM

To summarize, this paper explores new application of laser lithography based on direct laser writing and focused ion beam technique, to pattern optically smooth surface of IP-Dip polymer for photonic devices and on-chip photonic applications. The surface image in nanometer scale was obtained by atomic force microscope. The surface analysis was made in XEI commercial software by use of areal roughness parameter Sq. We have found that with this technique we can obtain much better results than the Raileigh criterion for smoothness. Finally, we found optimal process parameters of laser lithography for optically smooth surfaces and demonstrated the effect of ion beam treatment on surface quality.

On-chip thermo-optic tuning of suspended microresonators.

Suspended optical microresonators are promising devices for on-chip photonic applications such as radio-frequency oscillators, optical frequency combs, and sensors. Scaling up these devices demands the capability to tune the optical resonances in an integrated manner. Here, we design and experimentally demonstrate integrated on-chip thermo-optic tuning of suspended microresonators by utilizing suspended wire bridges and microheaters. We demonstrate the ability to tune the resonance of a suspended microresonator in silicon nitride platform by 9.7 GHz using 5.3 mW of heater power. The loaded optical quality factor (QL ~92,000) stays constant throughout the detuning. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by completely turning on and off the optical coupling between two evanescently coupled suspended microresonators.

Mode-evolution-based polarization rotation and coupling between silicon and hybrid plasmonic waveguides.

Hybrid plasmonic (HP) modes allow strong optical field confinement and simultaneously low propagation loss, offering a potentially compact and efficient platform for on-chip photonic applications. However, their implementation is hampered by the low coupling efficiency between dielectric guided modes and HP modes, caused by mode mismatch and polarization difference. In this work, we present a mode-evolution-based polarization rotation and coupling structure that adiabatically rotates the TE mode in a silicon waveguide and couples it to the HP mode in a strip silicon-dielectric-metal waveguide. Simulation shows that high coupling factors of 92%, 78%, 75%, and 73% are achievable using Ag, Au, Al, and Cu as the metal cap, respectively, at a conversion length of about 5 μm. For an extremely broad wavelength range of 1300–1800 nm, the coupling factor is >64% with a Ag metal cap, and the total back-reflection power, including all the mode reflections and backscattering, is below −40 dB, due to the adiabatic mode transition. Our device does not require high-resolution lithography and is tolerant to fabrication variations and imperfections. These attributes together make our device suitable for optical transport systems spanning all telecommunication bands.

Experimental demonstration of in-plane negative-angle refraction with an array of silicon nanoposts.

Controlling an optical beam is fundamental in optics. Recently, unique manipulation of optical wavefronts has been successfully demonstrated by metasurfaces. However, these artificially engineered nanostructures have thus far been limited to operate on light beams propagating out-of-plane. The in-plane operation is critical for on-chip photonic applications. Here, we demonstrate an anomalous negative-angle refraction of a light beam propagating along the plane, by designing a thin dielectric array of silicon nanoposts. The circularly polarized dipoles induced by the high-permittivity nanoposts at the scattering resonance significantly shape the wavefront of the light beam and bend it anomalously. The unique capability of a thin line of the nanoposts for manipulating in-plane wavefronts makes the device extremely compact. The low loss all-dielectric structure is compatible with complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technologies, offering an effective solution for in-plane beam steering and routing for on-chip photonics.

Focusing dual-wavelength surface plasmons to the same focal plane by a far-field plasmonic lens.

In this Letter, we demonstrate the nanoscale focusing of surface plasmons (SPs) at two different wavelengths to the same focal plane by a far-field plasmonic lens both numerically and experimentally. The far-field plasmonic lens, which consists of an annular slit and a concentric groove and is capable of focusing dual-wavelength SPs to the same focal plane, is characterized by a scanning near-field optical microscope under both linearly and radially polarized illuminations. The demonstrated far-field plasmonic lens can provide immense opportunities for on-chip photonic applications, including dual-wavelength-based super-resolution imaging and ultra-high-density optical data storage.

Theory and Design of Off-Axis Microring Resonators for High-Density On-Chip Photonic Applications

In this paper, we have developed a theory of an off-axis microring resonator (MRR) with single and multiple off-axis rings. The off-axis inner ring introduces tunable extra notches with many striking features in the transmission spectrum which facilitates its use as efficient modulators and sensors. A few such notches when closely packed have been used to design a compact band rejection filter with improved bandwidth (>10 nm). Moreover, these closely packed extra notches achieved by serially coupled MRRs with off-axis inner rings are tunable to reject arbitrarily chosen WDM channels. Through numerical simulations, based on both transfer matrix method and finite difference time domain method, it has been examined that off-axis MRRs cater superior performances in comparison to the serially coupled conventional MRR with respect to the device size, faster response, and low dispersion. The proposed off-axis MRRs may be used for cluster to cluster interconnects and can have other potential on-chip photonic applications in network layer. Necessary design parameters are computed from the coupled mode theory.

Highly Unidirectional Emission and Ultralow‐Threshold Lasing from On‐Chip Ultrahigh‐Q Microcavities

Prominent examples are whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavities, [ 2 , 3 ] which confi ne photons by means of continuous total internal refl ection along a curved and smooth surface. The long photon lifetime (described by high Q factors), strong fi eld confi nement, and in-plane emission characteristics make them promising candidates for novel light sources [ 4–9 ] and biochemical sensors with the ability of detecting few or even single nanoparticles. [ 10 , 11 ] The principal disadvantage of circular WGM microcavities is their intrinsic isotropy of emission due to their rotational symmetry. In addition to the photonic structures consisting of two or more perfectly spherical microcavities, [ 12 ] one of vital solutions is to use deformed microcavities by breaking the rotational symmetry, [ 13–16 ] which can provide not only the directional emission but also the effi cient and robust excitation of WGMs by a free-space optical beam. [ 17–20 ] Deformed microcavities fabricated on a chip are particularly desired for high-density optoelectronic integration, but they suffer from low Q factors in experiments. The Q factors are typically around or even smaller than ten thousand [ 21–27 ] limited by the large scattering losses from the involuntary surface roughness. The high Q factor is of great importance in fundamental studies and on-chip photonic applications. Here, with a pattern transfer technique and a refl ow process ensuring a nearly atomic-scale microcavity surface, we demonstrate experimentally on-chip undoped silica deformed microcavities which support both nearly unidirectional emission and ultrahigh Q factors exceeding 100 million. Consequently, low-threshold, unidirectional microlasing in such a microcavity with Q factor about 3 million is realized by erbium doping and a convenient free-space excitation.
