On-shell versus off-shell equivalence in 3D gravity

A given field theory action determines a set of field equations but other actions may yield equivalent field equations; if so they are on-shell equivalent. They may also be off-shell equivalent, being related by the elimination of auxiliary fields or by local field redefinitions, but this is not guaranteed, as we demonstrate by consideration of the linearized limit of 3D massive gravity models. Failure to appreciate this subtlety has led to incorrect conclusions in recent studies of the ‘minimal massive gravity’ model.

On the interacting chiral gauge field theory in D = 6 and the off-shell equivalence of dual Born-Infeld-like actions

A canonical action describing the interaction of chiral gauge fields in D = 6 Minkowski spacetime is constructed. In a particular partial gauge fixing it reduces to the action found by Perry and Schwarz. The additional gauge symmetries are used to show the off-shell equivalence of the dimensional reduction to D = 5 Minkowski spacetime of the chiral gauge field canonical action and the Born-Infeld canonical action describing an interacting D = 5 Abelian vector field. Its extension to improve the on-shell equivalence arguments of dual D-brane actions to off-shell ones is discussed.

Note on the off-shell equivalence between the linear and non-linear sigma models

As is well known, one can arrange the parameters of the O( N) non-linear sigma model to reproduce the low-energy S-matrix elements of the renormalizable O( N) linear sigma model. In this note we provide details which are necessary in order to obtain the off-shell equivalence between the two theories.

ON THE TENSOR FORMULATION OF EFFECTIVE VECTOR LAGRANGIANS AND DUALITY TRANSFORMATIONS

Using two different methods inspired by duality transformations we present the equivalence between effective Lagrangians for massive vector mesons using a vector field and an antisymmetric tensor field. This completes the list of explicit field transformations between the various effective Lagrangian methods to describe massive vector and axial vector mesons. Our method automatically generates the point-like terms needed for off-shell equivalence.

Off-shell equivalence in three-body scattering

Explicit relationships are derived connecting the author's boundary condition formalism to the Faddeev theory of three-body scattering. In particular, it is shown that suitable input to the boundary condition formalism can always be chosen so as to exactly reproduce the Faddeev amplitudes. This is also true in the presence of explicit three-body forces. It is further shown that such forces cannot be distinguished from off-shell properties of the two-particle interaction on the basis of three-particle scattering observables. A previous analysis of the n-d breakup reaction is discussed in some detail. (AIP)
