Influence of super activated renewable carbon (SARC) on the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in low-carbon composites (LCCs)

This is the first study of the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) onto super activated renewable carbon (SARC), so as to maximize the odor removal during the low-carbon composites (LCCs) compounding. Three different sized SARC samples were prepared by alkali (NaOH) modification of coconut-shell derived renewable carbon: small (S-SARC), medium (M-SARC) and large (L-SARC). Their structural properties were investigated to explore their performance on VOCs removal. The migration behavior of SARC particles was simulated to homogenize the particles’ distribution for better contact with VOCs molecules. The adsorption was evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) to quantify the emitted VOCs. Both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were applied, and the influence of chemical and physical properties of SARC on the adsorption capacity were compared. The results confirmed the dominant chemical adsorption, and Freundlich adsorption isotherm was suggested under the circumstances of high temperature compounding. Thus, using SARC, especially S-SARC can significantly enhance the removal of odorous VOCs and promote the LCCs in substituting the fossil-based plastics.

Mobile VOC measurements in Commerce City, CO reveal the emissions from different sources

ABSTRACT Source attribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be challenging in urban areas, which have many point sources. Mobile laboratories using time-of-flight mass spectrometers (TOF-MS) can take measurements throughout areas of concern, resulting in data with high spatial resolution that can be used to more easily identify these sources. However, emissions in heavily polluted areas still undergo significant mixing over short distances, making source attribution of some compounds challenging. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) has been widely used for attributing pollutants to different sources when taking stationary measurements due to its ability to process large amounts of data into generally interpretable results. However, some limitations of PMF can impact its usefulness to mobile data; PMF is a computationally intensive process, requires some user choices in attributing factors to emissions sources, and results can be significantly impacted by chemical transformations after emission. Here, both PMF and a simpler comparative analysis method are evaluated in analyzing measurements taken in the Elyria Swansea neighborhood of Commerce City, CO. This neighborhood is located near an oil refinery, a wastewater treatment plant, local industrial shops, and major highways. PMF failed to differentiate between oil refinery emissions and traffic emissions, and had difficulties recognizing other key sources. A simpler comparative analysis showed that the refinery contributed significantly to VOC concentrations throughout the neighborhood, including air toxics such as benzene. A wastewater treatment plant contributed to methanethiol and dimethyl sulfide. Finally, a small woodshop was identified as a hyperlocal VOC source, and contributed high amounts of some VOCs, such as toluene and other solvents, in its immediate surroundings. Implications Statement: This work discusses mobile measurements of VOCs around Commerce City, CO, a heavily polluted urban area north of Denver, using a PTR-TOF-MS. Two different source attribution methods, positive matrix factorization (PMF) and comparative analysis, were evaluated in the context of mobile measurements. The results show that an oil refinery and a woodshop contributed greatly to many VOC concentrations in the Elyria Swansea residential area of Commerce City. Additional sources, such as a wastewater treatment plant, also contributed to some odorous VOCs. PMF was unable to fully describe sources based on the mobile data. Comparative analysis was useful in attributing more VOCs to different sources, but quantitative results were influenced by how the analysis is set up. These findings are relevant to the residents of Denver and regulatory bodies to better understand Denver air pollution, as well as to other mobile studies doing source attribution of VOCs.

Integration of nontarget analysis with machine learning modeling for prioritization of odorous volatile organic compounds in surface water

Assessing the odor risk caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water has been a big challenge for water quality evaluation due to the abundance of odorants in water and the inherent difficulty in obtaining the corresponding odor sensory attributes. Here, a novel odor risk assessment approach has been established, incorporating nontarget screening for odorous VOC identification and machine learning (ML) modeling for odor threshold prediction. Twenty-nine odorous VOCs were identified using two-dimensional gas chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry from four surface water sampling sites. These identified odorants primarily fell into the categories of ketones and ethers, and originated mainly from biological production. To obtain the odor threshold of these odorants, we trained an ML model for odor threshold prediction, which displayed good performance with accuracy of 79%. Further, an odor threshold-based prioritization approach was developed to rank the identified odorants. 2-Methylisoborneol and nonanal were identified as the main odorants contributing to water odor issues at the four sampling sites. This study provides an accessible method for accurate and quick determination of key odorants in source water, aiding in odor control and improved water quality management. Environmental ImplicationWater odor episodes have been persistent and significant issues worldwide, posing severe challenges to water treatment plants. Unpleasant odors in aquatic environments are predominantly caused by the occurrence of a wide range of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). Given the vast number of newly-detected VOCs, experimental identification of the key odorants becomes difficult, making water odor issues complex to control. Herein, we propose a novel approach integrating nontarget analysis with machine learning models to accurate and quick determine the key odorants in waterbodies. We use the approach to analyze four samples with odor issues in Changsha, and prioritized the potential odorants.

Analysing the effect of ivermectin on the volatile organic compounds of dung and its possible influence on attraction to dung beetles

Abstract Dung odours are composed of a large number of different volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dung beetles are attracted to dung by olfactory cues, and their selection depends on the odorous VOCs emitted from this resource. The possible effects of ivermectin (IVM) on the chemical composition of dung volatile emissions and how this could modify its attraction to dung beetles have been debated for years. In this work, we analysed the possible effects of IVM on the VOCs emitted by cattle dung and the attraction of the dung beetle Ateuchetus cicatricosus Lucas, using behavioural bioassays. The results of the study showed that the chemical analyses of the dung volatile emissions from untreated cattle, treated cattle with IVM (200 μg/kg b.w.; collected at 7 and 14 days post‐administration) and dung spiked with IVM (100 and 500 μg/kg) were not significantly different. We detected a total of 44 VOCs among the treatments. The olfactometer bioassays showed no significant difference in the rates of attraction between different treatments. This study suggests that cattle dung does not experiment with a direct modification of the volatile compounds emitted, either via the digestive tract of cattle or by direct addition with IVM, ruling out the possible influence of any transformation product from the anthelmintic that could be present. In addition, a change in the microbiota of the digestive tract in cattle as a result of the mode of action of the drug is not supported. Further possible indirect effects are discussed.

“Out, Damned Spot”: The art and science of forensic restoration

Forensic restoration focuses on remediation of indoor environments that are contaminated with potentially hazardous biological materials. Some of the more challenging cases are those where someone has died alone and remained undiscovered for some time. Decomposition begins almost immediately after death: blood stops circulating and starts to pool and coagulate, and cells undergo autolysis. Our commensal microbes, critical to health during life, turn against us after death and start consuming us from within. Anaerobic microbial processes produce odorous volatile organic compounds and fluids that seep into the floor. Insects can oviposit in the body, resulting in masses of larvae feeding on the body. When ready to pupate, larvae leave, acting as vectors which can spread contamination around the site. Remediating a home where an unattended death has occurred involves removal of fluid-soaked items and a load reduction to remove soil, followed by a thorough cleaning to remove organic materials and prepare surfaces for disinfection, all while keeping operators safe from potential infectious agents. It’s certainly not a job for everyone, but one couple is trying to bring a higher level of science-based practices and training to the industry.

Microbial metabolism and health risk assessment of kitchen waste odor VOCs.

Kitchen waste (KW) generates odors comprising complex volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze VOCs, and 16S gene sequencing was used to analyze the microbial community composition and microbial metabolic mechanism. The results showed that the major odor-causing VOCs were hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol, methyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, and ethyl acetate. As the temperature increased, the VOCs and microbial community composition became more complex, and the microbial community related to VOC production included Leuconostoc, Pediococcus, Acetobacter, and Weissella. Based on PICRUSt2 analysis, the possibility of typical VOC interconversion by microbial metabolism was low. It was more likely that precursor substances were catalyzed by enzymes to generate the corresponding VOCs. Attention should be given to trichloromethane and 1,2-dichloroethane, which may cause adverse health effects through long-term inhalation. The study results provide guidance for controlling VOCs from KW.

Evolution of physico-chemical parameters, microorganism diversity and volatile organic compound of apple pomace exposed to ambient conditions

In apple processing, waste material known as apple pomace amounts to 45% of production volumes. When this residue is stored in open-air for its stabilization and potential uses, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are produced, resulting in environmental and odor pollution, and must be managed to avoid their impact. This work aims to study the emission of VOCs utilizing TD-GC/MS and its relationship with changes in physico-chemical (moisture, pH, proteins, among others) and biological (bacteria and fungi using Illumina MiSeq) parameters under three environmental conditions: open-air (outdoors), under-roof (indoors) and oxygen-free. The 8-month study results showed a gradual increase in odorous VOCs and microbial diversity, a product of chemical and biological transformation processes in the samples. A 30% increase in odorant compounds responsible for the unpleasant smell was observed, especially esters, aldehydes and hydrocarbons in samples stored in oxygen-free and Open-air conditions. Increases in VOCs over time were associated with changes in physico-chemical and biological parameters, as well as fluctuations in environmental variables (temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation). The results of this research allow establishing a relationship between storage conditions and the production of VOCs. In addition, recommendations for waste storage time are provided for the most common uses of apple pomace based on the physico-chemical parameters observed, in order to avoid the generation of odorous compounds. Of all storage methods analyzed, under-roof is the most adequate in practice. This study's findings are pertinent for managing agribusiness waste and its potential environmental pollution.

Synthetic microbial consortia to enhance the biodegradation of compost odor by biotrickling filter

Composting generates odorous gases, including ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Biological Trickling Filter (BTF) is effective for odor treatment, but it may have limitations with hydrophobic VOCs. In this study, a strain of Bacillus subtilis with ammonia-reducing ability, a strain of Bacillus cereus with desulfurization ability and a strain of Schizophyllum commune with the ability to degrade dimethyl disulfide were isolated and screened. The three strains were combined to create synthetic microbial consortia for enhancing odor treatment in the BTF. Compared to the activated sludge control, the BTF with synthetic microbial consortia removed 92.43% ammonia, 92.75% hydrogen sulfide. Furthermore, it demonstrated a significant improvement in the removal rates of p-methyl mercaptan, methyl sulfide, and dimethyl disulfide. High-throughput sequencing was conducted on the fillers of the synthetic microbial consortia-inoculated BTF to analyze the microbial community composition.

Effect of SEBS Molecular Structure and Formula Composition on the Performance of SEBS/PP TPE for Automotive Interior Skin.

The hydrogenated styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS)/Polypropylene (PP)-blended thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) is an ideal material for automotive interior skin applications due to its excellent elasticity, weather resistance, and environmentally friendly characteristics such as low odor and low volatile organic compounds (VOC). As a thin-wall injection-molded appearance skin product, it requires both high fluidity and good mechanical properties with scratch resistance. To optimize the performance of the SEBS/PP-blended TPE skin material, an orthogonal experiment and other methods were employed to investigate the impact of the formula composition and raw material characteristics, such as the styrene content and molecular structure of SEBS, on the TPE's final performance. The outcomes revealed that the ratio of SEBS/PP had the most significant influence on the mechanical properties, fluidity, and wear resistance of the final products. The mechanical performance was enhanced by increasing the PP content within a certain range. The degree of sticky touch on the TPE surface was increased as the filling oil content increased, causing the increase in sticky wear and the decrease in abrasion resistance. When the SEBS ratio of high/low styrene content was 30/70, the TPE's overall performance was excellent. The different proportions of linear/radial SEBS also had a significant effect on the final properties of the TPE. The TPE exhibited the best wear resistance and excellent mechanical properties when the ratio of linear-shaped/star-shaped SEBS was 70/30.

Non-thermal plasma coupled with a wet scrubber for removing odorous VOC

Odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) deteriorate the quality of life and affect human health. In this study, a process was developed to remove an odorous VOC using a combined non-thermal plasma (NTP) and wet scrubber (WS) system. The low removal efficiency of WSs and the large amount of ozone generated by NTP were resolved. Compared to the decomposition effects when using a WS and NTP separately, the NTP + WS system improved the removal efficiency of ethyl acrylate (EA) and significantly reduced ozone emissions. The maximum EA removal efficiency was 99.9%. Additionally, an EA removal efficiency of over 53.4% and a 100% ozone removal efficiency were achieved even at discharge voltages lower than 4.5 kV. Ozone catalysis was confirmed to occur in the NTP + WS system. Furthermore, we verified the removal of by-products such as residual ozone and formaldehyde, which is a representative organic intermediate of EA. This study demonstrates that the NTP + WS system is a green technology for removing odorous VOCs.

Enhanced removal of VOCs from wood by coupling extraction with surfactant and, oxidation using ultrasound-activated persulfate

Wood contains abundant extractives and volatile oils, which release strong odor and hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Free radicals generated by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can be used to efficiently destroy organic components in the aqueous phase. However, the limited water availability of hydrophobic extractives and non-water soluble volatile oils in wood may decrease the effectiveness of traditional in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO). The poor permeability of wood-blocks, the limited of matter transmission, and the short half-life of radicals result in the low utilization of free radicals. To tackle this issue, surfactants can be combined with an ultrasound-activated persulfate (PS) process to construct a biphasic wood/water system to enhance the utilization of aqueous-phase radicals and the mass transfer of extractives and volatile oils. Various controlling factors were evaluated, including surfactant concentration, PS dosage and ultrasound temperature. The GC-MS analysis indicated that the removal rate of wood VOCs was ∼66.9 % without recycling treatment. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis further revealed that SO 4 •- and •OH as the main reactive species. The evaluation of wood characteristics shows that the process has no serious damage. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for the oxidative removal of VOCs from wood. • VOCs source can be effectively oxidized in biphasic system. • C12-MADS surfactant was highly compatible with the ultrasound-activated persulfate. • Synergistic of ultrasonic irradiation and surfactant played a crucial role in the desorption of VOCs from wood. • The EPR analysis reveals that S O 4 - · and ·OH are the primary reactive species. • The key wood-VOCs was analyzed by the HS-SPME/GC-MS.

Industrial applications of the composite process “biodegradation+ activated carbon adsorption” in neutralizing the waste gas emissions

In order to absorb and degrade odor gas and volatile organic compounds from sewage plant of refineries, waste gas was treated by the technology of compound “biodegradation and activated carbon adsorption”. Through industrialization and production calibration, emission concentration of pollutants met the GB31571-2015 and GB14554-93, and statistics suggested the cost of utilities was 57.6 yuan per 10000m3, and fixed cost within reasonable boundaries. Therefore, this compounded technology can treat the waste gas from sewage plant of refineries.

Recent innovations in various methods of harmful gases conversion and its mechanism in poultry farms

Poultry breeding takes place in intensive, high-production systems characterized by high animal density, which is a source of harmful emission of odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and greenhouse gases, which in turn sustain animal welfare. This study identified and examined the characteristics of chemical compounds emitted in intensive poultry farming (laying hens, broilers) and their toxicity, which led to recommending methods of deodorization. Emphasis was placed on the law relative to air purification in poultry farms. Various methods of air treatment in poultry farms have been described: the modification of animal diet to improve nutrient retention and decrease the amount of their excrement; chemical oxidation technologies (ozonation, photocatalysis, Fenton reaction); various types/brands of biofilters, bioscrubbers and membrane reactors. Numerous studies show that biofilters can reduce ammonia emissions by 51%, hydrogen sulfide by 80%, odors by 67%, while scrubbers brings down ammonia emissions by 77% and odors by 42%, and the application of UV light lowers ammonia emissions by 28%, hydrogen sulfide by 55%, odors by 69% and VOCs by 52%. The paper presents both the solutions currently used in poultry farming and those which are currently in the research and development phase and, as innovative solutions, could be implemented in the near future.

Preferential removal of aromatics-dominated electronic industrial emissions using the integration of spray tower and photocatalysis technologies

Industrial emissions from the manufacturing of printed circuit boards (PCBs) are characterized by low concentration and high gas flow rates, and are one of the important sources of toxic and odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They are deleterious to human health and considered as important precursors for the formation of ozone. Herein, we conducted a case study in which an integrated decontamination technique consisting of a spray tower (ST) and photocatalysis (PC) was applied to purify the waste gas emitted from a PCB manufacturing facility. Total of 66 VOCs including halogenated hydrocarbons (HHs), aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs), oxygen-containing hydrocarbons (OVOCs), and aliphatic hydrocarbons (AIHs) were quantified using GC-MS during four sampling events. The results showed that AHs were the largest group (contributing >85.0% of the total VOCs). The average removal efficiency (RE) of VOCs during the nine months’ continuous treatment was 72.39%. High RE was attributed to the following three aspects: the capture efficiencies of HHs with slight water solubility (50.16% of RE) and AIHs with low saturation pressure (54.75% of RE) were improved by the process consisting of ST upstream of PC, whereas AHs was preferentially degraded by PC (61.34% of RE). In addition, the ozone formation potential and the health risk (cancer and non-cancer risks) greatly decreased after the ST-PC treatment. This study suggests that ST-PC technique is a promising approach for removing continuously emitted organic waste gas with low concentration and high gas flow rates, as well as reducing the ozone formation and risk of health hazards.

Odorous gas emissions from sewage sludge composting windrows affected by the turning operation and associated health risks

The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge (SL) has long been a challenging task in China. Open windrow composting, coupled with mechanical turning, is preferred in small cities and rural areas, due to low costs and ease of operation. However, the emission of odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from open composting windrows, as well as related health risks, has aroused strong protests from surrounding populations. This study investigated VOC emissions (including hydrogen sulphide) from five open SL composting windrows at a single site, before, during and after turning operations, and across different seasons. As expected, the highest VOC concentration (6676 μg m−3) was measured while turning the windrows, whilst an additional emission peak was observed at all windrows at different times after turning, which was determined by the raw material mixing ratio (SL: woodchips), as well as ambient and windrow temperatures. In general, higher VOCs emissions and odour concentrations were measured in summer, and odour pollution was mainly caused by sulphur and oxygenated compounds, due to their high odour activity values (OAVs). Methyl mercaptan, dimethyl disulphide, dimethyl sulphide, diethyl sulphide, acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate were identified as the odour pollution indicators for the composting facility. The results from a health risk assessment showed that acetaldehyde was the most hazardous compound, with both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks exceeding acceptable levels. The carcinogenic risks of benzene and naphthalene were also above acceptable levels; however, their risks were insignificant at the studied site due to the low concentrations.

Proof of concept for the use\xa0of trained sniffer dogs to detect osteosarcoma

Sarcomas are mesenchymal cancers which often show an aggressive behavior and patient survival largely depends on an early detection. In last years, much attention has been given to the fact that cancer patients release specific odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be efficiently detected by properly trained sniffer dogs. Here, we have evaluated for the first time the ability of sniffer dogs (n = 2) to detect osteosarcoma cell cultures and patient samples. One of the two dogs was successfully trained to discriminate osteosarcoma patient-derived primary cells from mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) obtained from healthy individuals. After the training phase, the dog was able to detect osteosarcoma specific odor cues in a different panel of 6 osteosarcoma cell lines with sensitivity and specificity rates between 95 and 100%. Moreover, the same VOCs were also detected by the sniffer dog in saliva samples from osteosarcoma patients (n = 2) and discriminated from samples from healthy individuals with a similar efficacy. Altogether, these results indicate that there are common odor profiles shared by cultures of osteosarcoma cells and body fluid samples from patients and provide a first proof of concept about the potential of canine odor detection as a non-invasive screening method to detect osteosarcomas.

Effect of storage and field acidification on emissions of NH3, NMVOC, and odour from field applied slurry in winter conditions

Land spreading of liquid animal manure (slurry) is a major source of atmospheric emissions. Ammonia (NH3) emission is of concern, as it is one of the main contributors to ambient air pollution and nitrogen deposition. Storage and field acidification of the slurry prior to application is used to mitigate NH3 emission, but the effect of acidification on emissions of odorous non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) has not been investigated, and there is a scarcity of data investigating the effect of field acidification. Four field experiments, two with cattle slurry and two with pig slurry, were performed. Ammonia and NMVOC emissions were measured simultaneously in a system of dynamic chambers and online measurements by cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) and proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). The system allowed for a high time resolution and low variation. All four experiments were performed under cold conditions (<10°C average temperature). Storage and field acidification significantly lowered the NH3 emission by 79 ± 18% and 30 ± 6% on average, respectively. The NMVOC cumulative emission increased by 202 ± 133% and 17 ± 16% on average after storage and field acidification, respectively, even if the increase was only significant for storage acidification. Storage acidification significantly increased the emissions of odour at most measuring times. The increases of cumulative NMVOC emissions and odour was primarily caused by higher emissions of volatile fatty acids.

Enhanced Catalytic Ozonation for Eliminating CH3SH via Stable and Circular Electronic Metal-Support Interactions of Si-O-Mn Bonds with Low Mn Loading.

Catalytic ozonation of methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) can effectively control this unbearable odorous sulfur-containing volatile organic compound (S-VOC). The construction of an electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) coordination structure to maximize the number of active sites and increase the intrinsic activity of active sites is an effective means to improve catalytic performance. In this work, the abundant Si-OH groups on PSBA-15 (SBA-15 before calcination) were used to anchor Mn to form a Si-O-Mn-based EMSI coordination structure. Detailed characterizations and theoretical simulations reveal that the strong EMSI effect significantly adjusts and stabilizes the electronic structure of Mn 3d states, resulting in an electron-rich center on the Si-O-Mn bond to promote the specific adsorption/activation of ozone (O3) and an electron-poor center on the (Si-O-)Mn-O bond to adsorb a large amount of CH3SH accompanied by its own oxidative degradation. In situ Raman and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses identify that catalytic ozonation over 3.0Mn-PSBA generates atomic oxygen species (AOS/*O) and reactive oxygen species (ROS/•O2-) to achieve efficient decomposition of CH3SH into CO2/SO42-. Furthermore, the electrons obtained from CH3SH in electron-poor centers are transferred to maintain the redox cycle of Mn2+/3+ → Mn4+ → Mn2+/3+ through the internal bond bridge, thus accomplishing the efficient and stable degradation of CH3SH prolonged to 180 min. Therefore, the rational design of catalysts with abundant active sites and optimized inherent activity via the EMSI effect can provide significant potential to improve catalytic performance and eliminate odorous gases.

Photoinduced release of odorous volatile organic compounds from aqueous pollutants: The role of reactive oxygen species in increasing risk during cross-media transformation

Photoinduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) release from fatty alcohols at the air-water interface, has attracted considerable attention. This paper comprehensively explores the release of odorous VOCs from aqueous micropollutants under photoirradiation, especially in terms of the important role of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in increased risk by cross-media transformation. The formation and distribution of photoinduced VOCs produced by aqueous benzyl alcohol (BzOH), a common ingredient in personal care products, were monitored in situ by online gas chromatography equipped with mass spectrometry and flame ionization detector (GC–MS/FID). The photoreaction of BzOH followed first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.0158/min under air. After 180 min of ultraviolet irradiation, the accumulated output of the gas-phase products benzene and benzaldehyde (BA) reached 3.8 μmol and 2.6 μmol respectively, being approximately 10 times that under nitrogen. According to electron paramagnetic resonance measurements, singlet oxygen mainly promoted the oxidation of BzOH to BA, which was an important intermediate producing benzene via photocleavage. Odorous alicyclic hydrocarbons were also generated through photorearrangement under nitrogen. On the other hand, the Henry's law constants of the main products were much lower than those of BzOH, indicating that the photoproducts would volatilize from the aqueous phase into the gas phase. The odor threshold of gas-phase products decreased to varying degrees after photoirradiation. Especially for BA, one of the main products, its odor threshold decreased 130 times compared with BzOH. This study shows that the risk of cross-media pollution could significantly increase due to the transformation of aqueous pollutants into odorous VOCs under photoirradiation and provides new insight into its risk prevention.
