Association between nut consumption and metabolic syndrome in Korean adults: results from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study–Health Examinees

BackgroundThe epidemiological evidence regarding nut consumption and metabolic diseases focuses on Western populations. Nut consumption among Koreans is relatively low, and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is rapidly increasing, highlighting the need for more focused studies in this population. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between nut consumption and metabolic syndrome in Korean adults.MethodsA total of 112,501 adults (39,481 men and 73,020 women) aged 40–79 years were selected from baseline data of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study–Health Examinees. Nut consumption was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and categorized as non-consumers, <1 serving/week, ≥1 to <2 servings/week, or ≥2 servings/week (15 g per serving). Metabolic syndrome and its components were defined according to the Korean Society of CardioMetabolic Syndrome criteria. Associations between nut consumption and metabolic syndrome and its components were examined using multiple logistic regression with adjustments for potential confounders.ResultsIn the study population, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 21.4% (26.9% in men and 18.4% in women), and the mean nut intake was 0.8 serving/week (0.7 serving/week in men and 0.8 serving/week in women). After adjusting for confounders, higher nut consumption was associated with a lower odds ratio (OR) of metabolic syndrome in individuals consuming ≥2 servings/week compared with non-consumers [OR = 0.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.80–0.91, p for trend <0.001]. Specifically, in men, this level of consumption was associated with a 14% reduction in the OR of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.77–0.95, p for trend = 0.028). In women, a similar reduction of 14% was observed (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.80–0.93, p for trend <0.001). Among the metabolic syndrome components, nut consumption was inversely associated with abdominal obesity, low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and elevated triglycerides in men and women, whereas no associations were observed for elevated blood pressure or elevated fasting blood glucose.ConclusionOur findings suggest that higher nut consumption is inversely associated with metabolic syndrome and its components in Korean adults. Further studies are needed to examine the longitudinal association between nut consumption and metabolic diseases in this population.

Relationship between Serum Total Testosterone Concentration and Metabolic Syndrome in Premenopausal Obese Women.

Men with low testosterone levels are at an increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome, irrespective of age or obesity. However, the relationship between metabolic syndrome and testosterone levels in women remains unclear. We compared the total testosterone concentrations between premenopausal obese women with and without metabolic syndrome and identified the factors affecting these concentrations. A single-center retrospective analysis was conducted using the medical records of 580 premenopausal women with obesity. The diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome were established using the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines. The mean±standard deviation age, weight, and body mass index were 38.8±8.4 years, 78.0±11.8 kg, and 30.0±4.1 kg/m2, respectively. The mean total testosterone concentration was lower in the metabolic syndrome group than in the non-metabolic syndrome group (n=385 vs. n=195; 0.22±0.10 ng/mL vs. 0.24±0.11 ng/mL; P<0.001). In a model adjusted for age, body mass index, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, and body fat percentage, the odds ratio for metabolic syndrome with respect to the total testosterone level was 0.128 (P=0.028). Testosterone concentration was negatively correlated with age (r=-0.334), systolic blood pressure (r=-0.084), and triglyceride concentration (r=-0.093) but positively correlated with weight (r=0.144), body mass index (r=0.140), waist circumference (r=0.133), body fat mass (r=0.167), and body fat percentage (r=0.167). Stepwise regression analysis revealed that age (β=-0.004, P<0.001), body mass index (β=0.003, P=0.004), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration (β=0.001, P=0.019) were independently associated with total testosterone concentration (adjusted R2=12.6%). Metabolic syndrome and obesity may be independently associated with testosterone levels in premenopausal women with obesity.

Association of Dietary Resistant Starch Intake with Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome in Korean Adults.

Research findings on the relationship between dietary resistant starch (RS) intake and metabolic diseases using population-based data are very scarce. This study examined the association of dietary RS intake with obesity and metabolic syndrome in Korean adults. A total of 12,491 adults (5292 men and 7199 women) were selected from the 2016-2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. The individual RS intake (g) was calculated by linking the 1-day 24 h recall data with the RS content database for common Korean foods. Obesity was defined as a BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2. Metabolic syndrome was defined as having three or more of the following: abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, elevated fasting blood glucose, and elevated blood pressure. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for obesity and metabolic syndrome across quartiles (Qs) of RS intake were calculated using multiple logistic regression analysis. In men, the highest quartile of RS intake showed a significantly lower OR for metabolic syndrome compared to the lowest quartile after adjusting for covariates (OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.56-0.92, p-trend = 0.0057). Dietary RS intake in men was also inversely associated with obesity (Q4 vs. Q1: OR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.67-0.97, p-trend = 0.0329) and elevated triglycerides (Q4 vs. Q1: OR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.66-0.98, p-trend = 0.0314). In women, RS intake was not associated with metabolic syndrome. Our findings may serve as useful data for developing guidelines for RS intake and conducting further cohort and clinical studies to investigate the health effects of RS.

Association between breakfast frequency and metabolic syndrome among young adults in South Korea

Skipping breakfast is highly prevalent but it is not clear whether breakfast frequency is associated with metabolic syndrome in young adults. We aimed to assess the association between breakfast frequency and metabolic syndrome in Korean young adults. This cross-sectional study was based on health check-up data of university students aged 18–39 years between 2016 and 2018. Participants were stratified into three groups by breakfast frequency (non-skipper, skipper 1–3 days/week, skipper 4–7 days/week). Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of metabolic syndrome. Out of 12,302 participants, 56.8% skipped breakfast at least 4 days/week. Metabolic syndrome prevalence was higher in those skipping breakfast for 4 or more days/week compared to non-skipper. (3.1% vs 1.7%) In the age- and sex-adjusted model, individuals skipping breakfast for 4–7 days per week had a higher OR of metabolic syndrome (OR 1.73, 95% CI 1.21–2.49) compared to non-skipper. Although this association became insignificant (OR 1.49, 95% CI 0.99–2.23) after a fully adjusted multivariable model, trends of positive association between frequency of breakfast skipping and metabolic syndrome was significant (P for trend = 0.038). Frequent breakfast skipping was associated with higher odds of metabolic syndrome in young adults. Further longitudinal studies in the long term are needed to understand the association of meal patterns with metabolic syndrome.

Prevalence of acanthosis Nigerians in patients with HIV infection and its relation with Metabolic Syndrome

According to International Diabetes Federation (IDF) prevalence of diabetes in India is 8.8%. Acanthosis Nigerians is one of the marker of insulin resistance which is easy to detect. There are not many studies which have correlated this ubiquitous clinical marker with metabolic syndrome and moreover there is no study on HIV positive patients: To study the prevalence of acanthosis Nigerians in patients with HIV-infection, attending ART clinic or admitted at a tertiary care centre and to study its relationship with metabolic syndrome.This is a cross sectional observational study done for 18 months including 300 patients. All patients with HIV-infection attending ART clinic or admitted were included in the study. Acanthosis Nigerians was found more in males as compared to females (15.35 vs 9.52%) though the difference was not statistically significant while metabolic syndrome was found in 12.7% of the patients. Comparative analysis of anthropometric data of metabolic syndrome patients with and without acanthosis Nigerians revealed larger waist circumference in patients with acanthosis Nigerians (85.44 vs 81.75) and it was statistically significant (p value 0.037). Sensitivity and specificity analysis of acanthosis Nigerians and metabolic syndrome revealed low sensitivity of acanthosis Nigerians in predicting presence of metabolic syndrome (17 %) and low positive predictive value (18.42 %). However it revealed high specificity (87.98 %) and a negative predictive value (86.97 %). Odds ratio of metabolic syndrome in presence of acanthosis Nigerians was 1.5. The CD4 count values were not significantly different in those with or without acanthosis Nigerians. The age, sex, duration of the therapy or the ART regimen did not statistically influenced occurance of acanthosis NigeriansAcanthosis Nigerians is a common and easily accessible dermatological condition. Increased waist circumference and waist hip ratio are strong predictors of acanthosis Nigerians. Acanthosis Nigerians can be used to predict occurrence of metabolic syndrome with high specificity and patients should be thoroughly evaluated for metabolic syndrome in its presence.

Relationship between age at menarche and metabolic diseases in Korean postmenopausal women: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2018.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in postmenopausal women. Early menarche may be associated with an increased risk of metabolic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to investigate the effect of menarche age and the risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome in Korean postmenopausal women. We analyzed 4,933 postmenopausal women (mean age: 64.7 years) using the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey 2016-2018. Subjects were divided into three groups according to menarche age (early menarche: ≤ 12 years (n = 451), reference: 13-16 years (n = 3,421), and late menarche: ≥ 17 years (n = 1,061)). Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) for diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Women with an early menarche age were younger, more educated, and had higher income than the other groups (p-value < 0.001). There were no differences in body mass index, blood pressure, fasting glucose, HbA1c, and cholesterol levels among the three groups. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, early menarche age was significantly associated with the risk of diabetes (OR 1.435, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.069-1.928). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in all subjects was 41.1%. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the OR of metabolic syndrome in the early menarche group was 1.213 (95% CI: 0.971-1.515). The risk of diabetes was 1.43 times higher in postmenopausal Korean women with early menarche. Although the risk of metabolic syndrome was not statistically significant, it showed a tendency to increase in the early menarche group. Our results suggest that age at menarche may be helpful in diabetes risk stratification and early interventions for postmenopausal women.

Effect of vitamin D deficiency on metabolic syndrome among Korean shift workers.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of vitamin D deficiency on metabolic syndrome among shift workers. This study included 207 756 workers who underwent a comprehensive health examination at a large South Korean university hospital between 2012 and 2018. We performed multivariate-adjusted logistic regression analysis and analyzed mediation and exposure-mediator interaction. Overall, 5.5% of the participants had metabolic syndrome. Compared to day work, the odds ratios (OR) of metabolic syndrome and vitamin D deficiency (<12 ng/mL) for shift work were 1.14 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06-1.22] and 1.63 (95% CI 1.57-1.70), respectively. Among shift workers, the OR of metabolic syndrome for vitamin D levels of 12-20 and <12 ng/mL, compared with a level of ≥20 ng/mL, were 1.36 (95% CI 1.15-1.61) and 1.51 (95% CI 1.26-1.81), respectively. Shift work and vitamin D deficiency showed an additive interaction; the relative excess risks due to interaction, attributable proportion, and synergy index were 0.26 (95% CI 0.08-0.44), 0.17 (95% CI 0.07-0.28), and 2.09 (95% CI 1.23-3.55), respectively. When vitamin D deficiency was treated as a mediator, the direct and total effects of shift work on metabolic syndrome were 1.12 (95% CI 1.04-1.22) and 1.15 (95% CI 1.07-1.25), respectively. The indirect effect was 1.03 (95% CI 1.02-1.04) and accounted for 18% of the total effect. Vitamin D is a potential mediator of the impact of shift work on metabolic risk factors.

The Effect of Alcohol Drinking on Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity in Koreans: Big Data Analysis.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of alcohol consumption on metabolic syndrome (MetS) and obesity in Koreans by analysis of big data from the National Health Insurance Service health checkup database. A total of 26,991,429 subjects aged 20 years or older were included. Alcohol consumption was divided into five groups: nondrinkers, ≤7.0 g/d, 7.1–14.0 g/d, 14.1–28.0 g/d, ≥28.1 g/d. Logistic regression analyses were performed after adjusting for age, exercise, smoking, and income. The odds ratios (ORs) of MetS and obesity in men and women were lowest at ≤7.0 g/d, similar to that of the nondrinkers at 7.1–14.0 g/d, and increased with the alcohol consumption. At 7.1–14.0 g/d in older men, the ORs of metabolic syndrome and obesity were similar to those in the nondrinkers, but the OR of obesity was slightly increased in older women. This study suggests that the risk of MetS and obesity may be higher in Korean men, women, and the elderly who drink more than 14 g/d than the nondrinkers. In people with obesity or abdominal obesity, or those who need to manage their blood pressure, glucose, or triglyceride, drinking more than 7 g/d may increase the risk of MetS.

Synergistic Interaction between Hyperuricemia and Abdominal Obesity as a Risk Factor for Metabolic Syndrome Components in Korean Population.

BackgroundThe present study investigated the role of synergistic interaction between hyperuricemia and abdominal obesity as a risk factor for the components of metabolic syndrome.MethodsWe performed a cross-sectional study using the data of 16,094 individuals from the seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016 to 2018). The adjusted odds ratios of metabolic syndrome and its components were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The presence of synergistic interaction between hyperuricemia and abdominal obesity was evaluated by calculating the additive scales—the relative excess risk due to interaction, attributable proportion due to interaction, and synergy index (SI).ResultsThere was a synergistic interaction between hyperuricemia and abdominal obesity in hypertriglyceridemia (men: SI, 1.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01 to 1.98; women: SI, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.02 to 2.69), and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (men: SI, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.41 to 2.91; women: SI, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.05 to 2.95). There was no significant synergistic interaction between hyperuricemia and abdominal obesity for the risk of high blood pressure (men: SI, 1.22; 95% CI, 0.85 to 1.77; women: SI, 1.53; 95% CI, 0.79 to 2.97), and hyperglycemia (men: SI, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.72 to 1.47; women: SI, 1.39; 95% CI, 0.75 to 2.57).ConclusionHyperuricemia and abdominal obesity synergistically increased the risk of hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-C in both sexes.

Association of Serum Vitamin D and Estradiol Levels with Metabolic Syndrome in Rural Women of Northwest China: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Objectives: We aimed to determine the association of serum vitamin D and estradiol levels with metabolic syndrome (MS) in rural women of northwest China. Methods: This research is a cross-sectional study. MS was defined according to the updated China Diabetes Society (CDS) criteria. Fasting serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and estradiol levels were measured using a chemiluminescence immunoassay. Differences between variables were analyzed using the chi-square test and t-test. Logistic regression analysis models were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals. Results: In total, 1893 women participated, of whom 641 (33.9%) had MS. The serum levels of 25(OH)D and estradiol were higher in the non-MS group. There was no significant association between 25(OH)D and estradiol levels. After adjusting for potential confounders, we compared first, second, and third quartiles with the highest quartile. Adjusted ORs for MS with respect to 25(OH)D level quartiles were 1.555, 1.281, and 1.568, respectively. Adjusted ORs for MS with respect to estradiol level quartiles were 0.671, 0.785, and 0.996, respectively. In the vitamin D-deficient (VD-deficient) group, adjusted ORs for MS with respect to estradiol level quartiles were 0.635, 0.753, and 0.918, respectively. Conclusions: There is a negative correlation between MS and vitamin D level and a positive correlation between MS and estradiol level. Low estradiol concentrations increased the risk of MS in the VD-deficient group. The results suggest a potential synergism between low 25(OH)D concentration and estradiol in MS in women.

Total, low-fat, and full-fat dairy consumption and risk of metabolic syndrome among workers.

Dairy products may play a beneficial role against metabolic syndrome; however, epidemiological evidence is scarce in Asian populations, who consume less dairy than Western populations. We prospectively investigated the association between dairy product intake, both overall and by fat content, and metabolic syndrome in a Japanese working population. Participants were 1014 workers (aged 19-68 years) without metabolic syndrome at baseline who completed a 3-year follow-up survey. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated self-administered diet history questionnaire. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the Joint Interim Statement (JIS) criteria. Multiple logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio of metabolic syndrome according to tertile of total, low-fat, and full-fat dairy product intake with adjustment for covariates. At the 3-year follow-up, 66 (6.5%) workers were newly identified as having metabolic syndrome. A trend towards decreased odds of developing metabolic syndrome was observed among those in the highest tertile of total and full-fat dairy product intake: multivariable-adjusted odds ratio for the highest versus lowest tertile was 0.54 (95% CI 0.26-1.12; P for trend=0.094) for total dairy products and 0.50 (95% CI 0.24-1.05; P for trend=0.038) for full-fat dairy products. Low-fat dairy intake was not associated with metabolic syndrome. Our results suggest that higher intake of full-fat, but not low-fat, dairy products may be associated with a lower risk of metabolic syndrome among Japanese.

Insulin Resistance Is Associated with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity in a Danish Population-Based Study-DanFunD.

Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a multisystem syndrome, and limited knowledge of its pathophysiology exists. Based on the population-based Danish cohort DanFunD, this study investigated metabolic health in people with MCS compared to individuals who did not have MCS. From 9656 cohort participants aged 18–76 years old, 1.95% were categorized as MCS individuals with comorbid functional somatic disorders (MCS + FSD, n = 188), and 1.13% were categorized as MCS without functional somatic disorders (MCS ÷ FSD, n = 109). MCS was characterized based on three criteria: the experience of symptoms upon exposure to common odors and airborne chemicals, symptoms related the central nervous systems and others organ symptoms, and significant impact on every day, social, and occupational life. The remaining study population without MCS or any other functional somatic disorders were regarded as controls. We used adjusted multiple linear regression with link-function to evaluate the associations between lipid and glucose metabolism markers and MCS. We also tested the odds ratio of metabolic syndrome in MCS. Results did not point to statistically significant associations between lipid biomarkers or metabolic syndrome and both MCS groups compared to the controls. We found that MCS individuals may be more insulin resistant and that MCS ÷ FSD may have an impaired glucose metabolism when compared to controls.

Asociación entre obesidad sarcopénica con resistencia a la insulina y síndrome metabólico

BackgroundThere is a debate as to whether sarcopenic obesity leads to an increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) in young adults. ObjectiveTo determine the association between sarcopenic obesity with MS and insulin resistance (IR). MethodsA 5-year retrospective cross-sectional study. Subjects of the specialty consultation between 18 and 55 years old, with BMI≥35 with comorbidity or BMI≥40 with and without comorbidity were included. The association was calculated using an odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). ResultsTwo hundred and fifty-four subjects were analyzed, 76.4% were women and average age was 38.36±8.78 years. The OR of IR in subjects with or without sarcopenic obesity was 2.224 (95% CI, 1127 to 4389, P=.02). The OR of MS in subjects with or without sarcopenia was 1.045 (95% CI, 0.624 to 1.748, P=.868). A difference was found between the fat mass in the group with IR vs. without IR of 60.58±14.4kg vs. 53.98±12.2kg (P<.001); likewise, between the BMI and muscle mass of 46.15±6.78kg/m2 vs. 43.51±6.11kg/m2 (P<.05) and 30.05±7.48kg vs. 27.86±5.91kg (P<.05) respectively. ConclusionThe association between sarcopenic obesity with IR in young adults was significant, but not with MS. Our findings emphasize the need to become aware of the importance of maintaining lean mass in obese subjects.

Metabolic syndrome and body weight in people living with HIV infection: analysis of differences observed in three different cohort studies over a decade.

The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of being overweight and metabolic syndrome (MS) among people living with HIV (PHIV) in three different cross-sectional studies conducted over three different periods: 2005, 2011 and 2015. This was a multi-centre, nationwide study. Data were collected in three studies from the CISAI group - SIMOne, HIV-HY and STOPSHIV - and included a total of 3014 PHIV. Logistic regression [odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (CI)] was used to account for age and gender difference among three groups when comparing MS prevalence and being overweight; potential confounders were accounted for by including them in the regression equation. Overall, the mean age was 46.9±10.2years, and men comprised 73.3% of participants. Comparing 2005, 2011 and 2015, MS was present in 34.5%, 33.0% and 29.3% of PHIV, respectively. Adjusted OR for MS was 0.64 (95% CI: 0.52-0.78) in 2011 and 0.56 (95% CI: 0.46-0.69) in 2015 compared with 2005, while BMI (kg/m2 ) increased from 23.6 in 2005, 24.5 in 2011 and 24.5 in 2015, with a concomitant increase of being overweight from 29.4% to 39.5% to 39.6% (p<0.0001). In recent years, PHIV have had a significantly improved metabolic profile compared with previously, despite increasing weight and BMI.

Association between Heart Rate Variability and Metabolic Syndrome

Objective: Several studies suggested that heart rate variability (HRV) is a risk factor for metabolic syndrome. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between HRV and metabolic syndrome among Korean adults.Methods: We included 6,945 people who visited the Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital Health Examination Center and tested HRV, from March 2016 to November 2019. Among them, 6,827 subjects were included. We excluded those who had a history of hypertension, diabetes, stroke, or other disease and excluded them from the omission of questionnaires. We examined HRV with machine WISE-8000 (MooYoo Instruments, Seongnam, Korea) and divided three groups of HRV results. The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was made using criteria modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate odds ratios between HRV results and metabolic syndrome.Results: The odds ratio for metabolic syndrome in low HRV result was 2.87 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.87–3.34) compared with high HRV result. After adjustment for age, smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity, the odds ratio for metabolic syndrome in low HRV result was also 3.37 (95% CI, 2.44–4.65) compared with high HRV result.Conclusion: Low HRV result using WISE-8000 (MooYoo Instruments) showed an increased risk for metabolic syndrome. HRV was associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults.

Increased Gut Microbiota-Dependent Trimethylamine-N-Oxide and Body Mass Index Associated With Metabolic Syndrome Risk in a Community-Dwelling Elders

Abstract Objectives In this cross-sectional community-based study, we explored the relationship between TMAO and BMI with metabolic syndrome among middle-aged and elderly adults in Taiwan. Methods Population in this study were from a cross-sectional, community-based study in northern Taipei City, Taiwan. Eighty-six adults subject aged over 40 years (men and women) were enrolled. All subjects live near the Shin Kong Hospital. Body mass index (BMI) calculated based on body height and weight data. TMAO measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) according to the manufactory's instruction. Metabolic syndrome was defined based on the 2005 revised National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III). The logistic regression, odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results This study reported that the metabolic syndrome group had higher TMAO levels (17.62 ng/mL) compare to participants without metabolic syndrome. In a multiple logistic regression, after adjusted with age, gender, weekly red meat consumption, log Hs-CRP, log choline, l-carnitine, and total body fat percentage, TMAO (adjusted OR = 5.89, 95% CI: 1.08–32.37) and BMI (adjusted OR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.08–1.79) were more likely to increase metabolic syndrome risk. Conclusions TMAO and BMI have roles in increasing metabolic syndrome risk. TMAO associated with higher OR of metabolic syndrome than BMI. Therefore, these findings showed that TMAO is a potential biomarker to predict metabolic syndrome risk in middle-aged and elderly adults in Taiwan. Implications of Abdominal Adipose Tissue Distribution on Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Metabolic Syndrome: A Chinese General Population Study.

INTRODUCTION:Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) has been found to play a critical role in the development of metabolic syndrome and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) independent of generalized obesity.METHODS:In this secondary study of prospectively acquired data, 625 participants underwent magnetic resonance spectroscopy and chemical shift fat–water separation MRI (2-point Dixon) of the liver and whole abdomen, respectively, in a 3 Tesla magnet. Whole abdominal VAT and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) were extracted from the 2-point Dixon image series using an automated method. Clinical/anthropometric/blood biochemistry parameters were measured. Using region-specific body mass index, participants were classified into 3 paired subgroups (lean, overweight, and obese) and presence of NAFLD (liver fat content ≥ 5.5%).RESULTS:All relevant clinical/anthropometric/blood biochemistry characteristics and liver enzymes were statistically significant between groups (P < 0.001). NAFLD was found in 12.1%, 43.8%, and 68.3% and metabolic syndrome in 51.1%, 61.9%, and 65% of the lean, overweight, and obese, respectively. Odds ratio for metabolic syndrome and NAFLD was increased by 2.73 (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.18–3.40) and 2.53 (95% CI 2.04–3.12), respectively, for 1SD increase in VAT volume while prevalence of metabolic syndrome was increased by 2.26 (95% CI 1.83–2.79) for 1SD increase in liver fat content (%). VAT/SAT ratio in the lean with fatty liver showed the highest ratio (0.54) among all the subgroups, without a significant difference between the lean and obese with NAFLD (P = 0.127).DISCUSSION:Increased VAT volume/disproportional distribution of VAT/SAT may be vital drivers to the development of metabolic syndrome and NAFLD irrespective of body mass index category.

Childbearing age is correlated with components of metabolic syndrome and parameters of insulin resistance in Chinese menopausal women

Objective To assess the relationship between childbearing age and elements of metabolic syndrome (MS) among menopausal women in China. Materials and methods One thousand one hundred and forty-one subjects were divided into four interim average childbearing age (ACA) groups: ≥16 < 24 years old, ≥24 < 29 years old, ≥29 < 34 years old, and ≥34 years old. The group with the lowest prevalence of MS was used as a control. Body mass index, waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio were assessed. Plasma glucose, lipids, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting insulin (FINS) were measured. Insulin resistance (IR) was assessed using the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) method. Results The prevalence of MS in the 16–24 and 29–34 age groups was higher than that in the control group (p < .05). Compared with the control group, the odds ratios of MS were 1.431 for the 16-24 group (p < .05) and 1.553 for the 29-34 group (P < 0.01). ACA was correlated with FINS, HOMA-IR, WC, fasting plasma glucose, and triglycerides independent of age (p < .05). Conclusions Average childbearing age was correlated with parameters of IR and components of MS independent of age in Chinese menopausal women.

Association between Breakfast Skipping and the Metabolic Syndrome: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2017.

Background and Objectives: Recently, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Korea has increased rapidly. Current knowledge reflects the importance of dietary control in relation to the metabolic syndrome. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of skipping breakfast on the metabolic syndrome. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017 for the second year. A total of 3864 adults aged 20 to 64 were included in the study. We stratified the study population into three groups, based on breakfast patterns: the regular group, irregular group, and skipping group. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the association between skipping breakfast and the presence of metabolic syndrome. Results: We noted an increase in the proportion of metabolic syndrome cases as follows: skipping group (3.3%), irregular group (5.4%), and regular group (8.5%) (p < 0.001). The multivariate-adjusted odds ratios of metabolic syndrome in the skipping and irregular groups compared with the regular group were 0.68 (95% CI; 0.35 to 1.35) and 0.81 (95% CI; 0.51 to 1.28), respectively. In the 40–65-year-old age group, which had a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratios of metabolic syndrome in the skipping group compared with regular group were 0.78 (95%CI, 0.39 to 1.62). Conclusions: There was no significant correlation between skipping breakfast and risk factors of metabolic syndrome (after adjusting for risk factors), but a tendency of skipping breakfast to lower the risk of metabolic syndrome was observed. A rationale for these results is proposed through the association between skipping breakfast and intermittent fasting.

Eating speed and risk of metabolic syndrome among Japanese workers: The Furukawa Nutrition and Health Study.

Evidence from prospective studies on the association between eating speed and metabolic syndrome is limited. We prospectively investigated the association between eating speed and metabolic syndrome in a Japanese working population. Participants were 1018 workers (ages 19-68 y) without metabolic syndrome at baseline who completed both baseline and 3-y follow-up surveys. Eating speed was self-reported and categorized as slow, medium, or fast. Metabolic syndrome was defined using criteria recommended in a joint interim statement from several international societies. A multiple logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio of metabolic syndrome according to eating speed with adjustment for covariates, including total energy intake. At the 3-y follow-up, 67 workers (6.6%) were newly identified as having metabolic syndrome. Fast eating speed was significantly associated with increased odds of developing metabolic syndrome, with multivariable-adjusted odds ratios for eating fast of 2.13 (95% confidence intervals, 1.23-3.68) compared with medium eating speed with an adjustment for covariates, including total energy intake. The association remained statistically significant after an additional adjustment for body mass index (BMI) and BMI change between baseline and follow-up surveys (odds ratio: 1.95; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-3.56). Fast eating speed was associated with an increased likelihood of developing metabolic syndrome independently of total energy intake, BMI at baseline, and BMI change during the follow-up period.
