Prosthodontic Rehabilitation of Ocular Defect Using Customized Ocular Prosthesis

The eyes play an important role in determining a person's facial profile. It causes distress to the patient when his or her eyes are lost. In order to enhance self-esteem and social acceptance, eye prosthesis restores the appearance of the face. There are various materials and techniques used in the fabrication of an ocular prosthesis. Among the advantages of custom ocular prostheses over stock eye prostheses are better eyelid movements, even pressure distribution, which reduces trauma to the tissues, and improved fit, comfort, and aesthetics. An ocular prosthesis can be customized to appear more natural by customizing the size, shape, and color of the iris, pupil, and sclera. This article illustrates the rehabilitation of eyes using custom-made eye cells.

Ocular Defect Rehabilitation Using Digital Photography

Surgical intervention for the management of ocular disorders may lead to eye defects. The primary objective in rehabilitating such defects with an ocular prosthesis is to re-establish the physical and mental well‑being of the patient. A series of detailed steps for custom‑made ocular prosthesis fabrication using the advantages of digital photography are presented in this article. The iris reproduction by capturing it in a digital camera and editing the image in graphic software is presented. The presented technique replicates the natural iris without the need for iris painting and special artistic skills in a short time and simplified manner

Ocular defect rehabilitation in battle causality with custom made ocular prosthesis – A case report

The disability associated with the loss of an eye can cause significant physical, psychological and emotional disturbances. A maxillofacial Prosthodontist can boost the physical and psychological well being of such patients by restoration of functional and esthetic requirements. A 30 year old male serving soldier who sustained a blast injury to the left eye during a counter insurgency operation in the northern sector of the country was referred to Department of Prosthodontics for prosthetic rehabilitation of missing left eye. A custom made heat polymerized polymethyl methaacrylate ocular prosthesis was fabricated for the patient which restored normal opening of the eye, some degree of movements and esthetically pleasing appearance. Prosthetic rehabilitation of orbital defect owing to surgical management of rhabdomyosarcoma

Mutilation of any facial structure, especially eye, affects the health of the patient psychologically and functionally. “Its the right of every human being to appear like human” and hence facial prosthesis plays a major role in rehabilitation. Silicone among all materials used for facial prosthesis gives a life-like appearance and better marginal adaptation. This case report presents a straightforward technique for the rehabilitation of ocular defect owing to surgical management of rhabdomyosarcoma with silicone orbital prosthesis.

Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Ocular Defect: A Case Report

The kind of disfigurement caused due to loss of eye results in significant physical, psychological and social distress for which they require immediate management and functional rehabilitation. The aim of such rehabilitation is to re-establish back the patient's dignity and self-confidence. The disfigurement can be concealed to an extent to give an acceptable aesthetic appearance. This clinical case report represents the rehabilitation of an ocular defect of a 58year old patient caused due to a traumatic injury; fabrication of customized prosthesis was done by polymethylmethacrylate ocular intraorbital prosthesis.

Rehabilitation of ocular defects: Custom made and modified stock eye prostheses

Physical defects that compromise appearance or function prevent an individual from leading a normal life. The loss of eye is a visible facial defect and often undermines the patient's confidence. Prosthetic rehabilitation of ocular defect should be done as soon as possible for physical as well as psychological healing. This paper describes two case reports detailing alternative procedures for prosthetic rehabilitation of ocular defects. The article also discusses the most economical and effective esthetic treatment available for ocular defects as applicable in the Indian scenario. It describes the fabrication of a custom ocular prosthesis and modified stock ocular prosthesis and the differences in methods of fabrication and outcomes. In addition, use of Leudde's exopthalmometer for easier measurements is explained.

Prosthetic rehabilitation of ocular defect

The loss of a part of the face, particularly the eye, requires early replacement and hence that the patient may return to a normal life. The maxillofacial defect causes esthetic, functional, and psychological difficulties for the patient. Although most ocular prostheses can be made from a prefabricated artificial eye, customized ocular prostheses offer better esthetics. This article describes the fabrication of a custom ocular prosthesis where a prefabricated iris was modified to fit into a custom-made scleral portion of prostheses. The time for fabrication of prosthesis was less and good esthetics was achieved.

Rehabilitation of Ocular Defect with Orbital Prosthesis: A Case Report

Eye defects constitute a major portion of maxillofacial defects. An attempt has been made to rehabilitate the lost eye with a great challenge by the skills and materials available. A custom made orbital prosthesis using silicon to replace soft tissue, acrylic for sclera and papillary part and adhesive for retention is good alternative. Key-words: Eye Prosthesis, Silicon Elastomers, Moulage Key Messages: Lost eyes have been replaced with prosthesis for many years in the form of stock or custom ocular prosthesis. Great evolution in field of maxillofacial material has made it possible to nearly duplicate patient's features in prosthesis.
