Psychological Empowerment and Job Stress in Higher Education Institutions in Ecuador.

Both psychological empowerment and job stress have been the subjects of great concern, studied mainly in developed countries. In emerging economies, few studies have contributed to the knowledge of the relationship between these two constructs. This study analyzed the relationship between the dimensions of psychological empowerment and job stress in tenured professors from public higher education institutions in Ecuador during 2019, providing insights for achieving better results regarding the productivity and well-being of teachers. This research seeks to bridge the knowledge gap concerning psychological empowerment and job stress within an academic context in an emerging economy. In this quantitative study, a confirmatory model was proposed. Correlation analysis was used to investigate whether psychological empowerment dimensions are related to job stress. Data were collected from a sample of 200 tenured professors working at public universities located in Zone 3 of Ecuador in 2019. The instrument applied for psychological empowerment was proposed by Spreitzer, composed of four dimensions-meaning, competence, impact, and autonomy. For job stress, the Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (OSI-R) instrument applied was proposed and revised by Osipow. Through structural equation modeling with partial least squares, it was possible to demonstrate that psychological empowerment reduces levels of job stress only when it is perceived that there is autonomy, fewer limitations, and more freedom. No evidence was identified that other components of psychological empowerment, such as meaning, competence, and impact, are related to job stress. The results indicated that the model used to explain the relationship between these variables had weak predictive power. Furthermore, only one research hypothesis is accepted. Finally, these findings are corroborated and explained by the different perspectives presented by various authors.

A cross-sectional survey on occupational stress and associated dyslipidemia among medical staff in tertiary public hospitals in Wenzhou, China.

IntroductionOccupational stress is considered to be a harmful physical and emotional response to an individual's psychological and/or physiological state in the work environment and is highly prevalent among medical staff. However, few epidemiological studies have investigated occupational stress in medical staff. Our study aims to explore the characteristics of occupational stress and its relationship with dyslipidemia in Chinese medical staff at tertiary hospitals and establish the basis for future preventive strategies.MethodsA cross‐sectional study was conducted in three tertiary public hospitals in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China. Data were collected using random sampling procedures to examine demographic characteristics and job‐related data. The participants completed the Occupational Stress Inventory—Revised (OSI‐R) questionnaires and serum lipids tests. Partial correlation analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between occupational stress and dyslipidemia.ResultsA total of 1,176 medical staff responses to questionnaires were obtained. The occupational stress levels of medical staff were higher than those of normative populations, while their coping resources were lower. Most of the subscales of occupational stress demonstrated higher results for doctors and males than for nurses and females with crude analyses. Each subscale of OSI‐R was found to be associated with a different type of blood lipid level.ConclusionsThe occupational stress level of medical staff in tertiary public hospitals in Wenzhou was high, and occupational stress may contribute to dyslipidemia. An investigation into occupational stress levels and their association with dyslipidemia in this population could draw more attention to medical staff in tertiary public hospitals.

This study was conducted among 250 submariners using Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (OSI-R) questionnaires to measures the domains of occupational stress, psychological strain and coping resources of submariners. The rates of occupational stress factors that affect psychological coping skill including role insufficiency, role ambiguity and responsibility were 22.4%, 24.8% and 25.2%, respectively. The rates of personal factors including vocational strain, psychological strain, interpersonal strain and physical strain were 4.8%, 20.4%, 14.8% and 15.2%, respectively. The rates of recreation, self-care, social support and cognitive coping were 7.2%, 16%, 8.8% and 8.4%, respectively.

Association between occupational stressors and type 2 diabetes among Chinese police officers: a 4-year follow-up study in Tianjin, China.

To explore the relationship between occupational stressors and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus among police officers. Baseline data were collected from policemen who completed the Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (OSI-R) questionnaire, a self-designed questionnaire, and underwent free clinical measurements at the Medical Center of Police Hospital in Tianjin, China, in April 2007. A total of 5811 policemen participated in follow-up with the dynamic observation of new-onset diabetes (NOD) events occurring annually between 2008 and 2011. Occupational stress was measured by the OSI-R questionnaire, which contains 14 different scales. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to calculate the hazard ratios (HR) of the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by occupational stressors. A total of 3.1% of the participants (n = 179) developed NOD in the follow-up period from 2008 to 2011, and the incidence rates of NOD were 0.58% in 2008, 0.98% in 2009, 0.52% in 2010, and 1.01% in 2011. Role overload (RO), role boundary (RB), physical environment (PE), interpersonal strain (IS), and physical strain (PHS) were associated with the incidence of T2DM (RO: HR = 1.574, 95% CI = 1.071-2.372; RB: HR = 1.645, 95% CI = 1.144-2.365; PE: HR = 2.292, 95% CI = 1.545-3.400; IS: HR = 1.537, 95% CI = 1.079-2.191; and PHS: HR = 1.680, 95% CI = 1.167-2.006) after adjustment for confounding factors. A subgroup Cox regression analysis among traffic control police officers showed the specific work stressors remained robust except RO. Several aspects of stressors were independent predictors of T2DM in a prospective cohort study in Tianjin, China. This practical information can be applied to the development of psychological interventions against T2DM.

Work stress, work–home interference and perceptions of organisational culture amongst insurance employees in Zimbabwe

The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between work stress, work-home interference, and perceptions of organisational culture amongst insurance employees in the Zimbabwean context. Data were collected from a sample of 190 employees (females=46%) who completed the Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (OSI-R), the Work-Home Interference Questionnaire (SWING), and the Organisational Culture Index (OCI). Data analysis consisted of correlational and standard multiple regression analyses. The results revealed significant positive correlations between the sub-scales Role Overload, Role Insufficiency, Role Ambiguity, Role Boundary, Responsibilities, and Physical Environment of the OSI-R, the sub-scales Positive Work-Home Interference and Negative Work-Home Interference of the SWING, and the sub-scales Bureaucratic, Innovative and Supportive Culture of the OCI. These findings contribute to new knowledge in terms of the work stress experienced by insurance employees who are always under continuous pressure from the industry. Furthermore, it could be used to gain insight to enhance the work-life balance of insurance employees and the effect of organisational culture as perceived by insurance employees.

Relationship between occupational stress and mental health in offshore oil platform workers

To investigate the relationship between occupational stress and mental health in offshore oil platform workers and to provide a scientific basis for protection of their mental health. A total of 768 workers on offshore oil platform were surveyed with the Occupational Stress Inventory Revised Edition and Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90). The total score of Occupational Role Questionnaire (ORQ) for the workers (160.27±24.63) was significantly lower than the national norm (166.52±27.01) (P < 0.01); the total score of Personal Strain Questionnaire (PSQ) (101.96±19.8) was significantly higher than the national norm (92.45±17.33) (P < 0.01). The total score of Personal Resource Questionnaire (PRQ) for the workers was not significantly different from the national norm (P > 0.05), but the items of recreation, social support, and rational/cognitive found significant difference (P < 0.05). The total score of SCL-90 was positively correlated with all items of ORQ and PSQ (P < 0.01) and negatively correlated with all items of PRQ (P < 0.01). The multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that current work seniority, education background, drinking, role overload, role insufficiency, role ambiguity, responsibility, physical environment, and rational/cognitive conduct impacted the score of SCL-90 (P < 0.05). The mental health of workers on offshore oil platform is related to occupational stress, and role overload, role ambiguity, physical environment, and rational/cognitive conduct, etc, are closely associated with the workers' mental health.

Cross-sectional Study on Occupational Stress of Clinical Research Associates in China

Background: There had been large amount of discussion and comments regarding the clinical research associate (CRA) work stress and quality of life in DXY, the primary website focusing on medicine and pharmaceutics in China. Quite a number of clinical research professionals described various examples and cases reflecting higher occupational stress of the Chinese CRAs. No relevant paper to date in the world have been formally published that assessing the CRA’s workload or occupational stress. The purpose of the study was to investigate the occupational stress of the CRAs in China. Methods: Chinese CRAs with more than 6 months monitoring experiences were enrolled into the study by convenient sampling. The number of participants from multinational CROs, local CROs, multinational pharmaceuticals and local pharmaceuticals were controlled to a ratio of approximately 4:3:2:1. A total of 200 CRAs were surveyed for work stressor, personal strain and coping resources by Occupational Stress Inventory Revised (OSI-R) Chinese edition during January to March 2013. Results: Among the 178 participants evaluable, about 71.3% were females. Their average age was 28.76 years (SD=3.97 years), ranging from 21 to 42 years. 87.1% of the participants had a Bachelor’s degree or above. Around 29.8% of the participants had medicine background, and 48.3% had pharmacy background. Role Ambiguity (RA) stressor was higher among the CRAs of age ≤ 25 years, while responsibility was higher among the CRAs of age ≥ 36 years age group. Vocational Strain (VS) was also higher among those of age ≤ 25 years. A trend of higher self-care resources was observed in elder CRAs and those of higher education levels. The CRAs from multinational CROs had highest coping resources. Conclusion: This study revealed that the CRAs in China had moderate work stressor, personal strain and coping resources. The occupational stresses were varying amongst Chinese CRAs of different gender, ages, education levels and company types. The CRAs at age of ≤ 25 years had higher occupational stress than other age groups. The CRA’s personal strain and its facets had their predicating factors, role insufficiency and role boundary were the main risk factors, while rational coping, recreation, social support and self-care were the protecting factors.

Personality traits and occupational stress among Chinese academics

The primary objective of this study was to examine the predictive power of personality traits for occupational stress among Chinese university academics. Two hundred and forty-six participants responded to the NEO Five-Factor Inventory and the Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised. Results indicated that the strongest predictor for occupational stress is neuroticism, with those higher on neuroticism being more vulnerable to role overload and psychological strain. An equally important predictor is conscientiousness, with academics higher on conscientiousness reporting more frequent use of adaptive coping strategy and less susceptible to the feeling of role insufficiency. Extraversion and openness contributed modestly to occupational stress, while agreeableness was the least important factor in occupational stress. Implications of these findings are discussed concerning faculty members and university senior managers.

Psychological status and occupational stress among the traffic policemen with metabolic syndrome

In this cross-sectional survey,2 682 traffic policemen in Tianjin were enrolled,and they were tested with Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (OSI-R) and Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90).Body mass index,blood pressure,fasting blood glucose,triglycerides,and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ( HDL-C ) were also determined at the same time. Correlation analysis showed that body mass index was positively correlated with somatization ( r =0.039,P =0.045 ),hostility ( r =0.046,P =0.01 8 ),and psychoticism ( r =0.041,P =0.036).Systolic blood pressure was positively correlated to somatization (r =0.056,P =0.004 ),obsessive-compulsiveness ( r =0.044,P =0.023 ),interpersonal sensitivity ( r =0.041,P =0.034 ),depression ( r =0.039,P =0.043),anxiety ( r =0.055,P =0.004 ),and psychoticism ( r =0.051,P =0.009 ).Diastolic blood pressure was positively correlated to somatization ( r =0.047,P =0.015 ),interpersonal sensitivity ( r =0.042,P =0.030 ),anxiety ( r =0.050,P =0.010 ),and psychoticism ( r =0.047,P =0.014 ).Fasting blood glucose was positively correlated to somatization ( r=0.042,P=0.028 ).Multiple regression analysis showed that occupational stress factors were role boundary,physical environment,responsibility,recreation,role ambiguity,role overload,and cognitive coping.Among these factors,role ambiguity and cognitive coping reduced occupational stress while others increased the stress.The results of the unconditional logistical regression analysis showed that there is an independent association of metabolic syndrome with somatization,role insufficiency,and physical strain for the task and body tension ( P＜0.01). Association between occupational stress and risk of overactive bladder and other lower urinary tract symptoms: A cross‐sectional study of female nurses in China

To evaluate the prevalence of overactive bladder (OAB) and other lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), and their association with occupational stress in female nurses in China. From September 2010 to March 2011, 1,135 registered female nurses with one or more years of nursing experience, were cluster-sampled. The participants completed questionnaires on LUTS-related symptoms and Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (OSI-R) tests. Multiple logistic regressions were performed to evaluate the independent impact of perceived occupational stress on OAB and other LUTS, adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), and history of childbearing and pelvic surgery. 1,070 valid responses to questionnaires were obtained. The prevalence of OAB was 27.57% (95% CI: 24.89-30.25%). LUTS of any types occured in 89.63% of nurses, with 64.39% reporting urgency, 27.10% reporting increased daytime frequency, 17.88% reporting nocturia and 21.03% reporting urge incontinence. The occupational stress and psychological strain levels of nurses were higher than those of normative populations, while their coping resources were lower. Most of the sub-scales of occupational stress and psychological strain showed higher results for nurses with OAB than for those OAB-free, while coping resources were not found to make any statistically significant differences. After adjusting age, BMI, and childbearing and pelvic surgery history, each sub-scale of OSI-R was found to be associated with at least one type of LUTS. The prevalence of OAB and other LUTS is high among female nurses in China, and occupational stress may be a contributing factor.

The relationship between occupational stress and metabolic syndrome among policemen

To explore the occupational stress factors associated with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) among male policemen. Using cluster sampling method, we selected four Public Security Bureau within the jurisdiction of the station now in some city. All the male police were included as research objects, and finally 1490 persons were selected, health and occupational stress inventory-revised (OSI-R) questionnaire were used for epidemiological surveys, and anthropometric examination and chemical indicators were also measured at the same time. The analysis methods were chi-square test and unconditional logistical regression. Among the 1490 of research objects, 1483 completed the questionnaire, and 1480 of the eligible questionnaires were available.237 cases were MS, and the prevalence rate was 16.0%(237/1480). The number of cases who were high, moderate and lack of occupational stress in MS group were 8, 39 and 23, that in non-MS were 14, 114 and 131, respectively. The odds of occupational stress with the highest and medium among policemen than who were lack were 4.82 (95%CI: 1.50 - 15.41) and 3.33 (95%CI: 1.62 - 6.79); the average score of role ambiguity, role insufficiency and responsibility in the group of MS were (38.76 ± 6.83), (25.74 ± 7.22), (25.76 ± 6.27); and that in non-MS were (37.55 ± 6.85), (24.50 ± 6.58), (25.05 ± 5.95). The logistical regression analysis showed that: the likely three occupational risk stress factors which influencing the prevalence of MS were role ambiguity, role insufficiency and responsibility, and the OR (95%CI) were 1.06 (1.02 - 1.10), 1.04 (1.02 - 1.07) and 1.03 (1.01 - 1.06), respectively. Role ambiguity, role insufficiency and responsibility were the occupational risk stress factors associated with the prevalence of MS among male policemen.

The Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised: Confirmatory factor analysis of the original inter-correlation data set and model

Stress levels are said to be rising in many different occupations but one problem for cross-occupation comparison purposes is that different questionnaires have been used in different studies – often specially designed questionnaires for the occupation under study. The Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (OSI-R) is one questionnaire that may help assess the same stress-related variables across different occupational groups. The OSI-R model is theory-based and assesses the effects on the individual of three ‘factors’ (occupational roles, psychological strain, and coping resources) across fourteen dimensions. This current study reports the findings of a re-analysis of the original Manual data of 983 mixed occupational respondents of the OSI-R, using confirmatory factor analyses of the inter-correlations given of the 14 dimensions. The findings show that the three-factor solution is not optimal (though two of the three original factors are accurately reproduced) and that a four-factor solution better fits the responses, but with more error than desirable in both solutions. This finding is consistent with an earlier confirmatory factor analysis of the responses of 141 teachers which suggested that a four-factor rather than three-factor solution was preferred. Implications for use of the OSI-R and for further research are drawn.

Assessing Occupational Stress, Strain, and Coping for North American Teachers in Kuwait

In this study, differences in levels of occupational stress and strain experienced by North American local (n=24) and expatriate (n=43) teachers working in Kuwait were investigated by married (n=34) and single status (n=31) and by male (n=30) and female (n=47) sex. All teachers self-administered the Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised. No differences appeared among measures of stress or strain between male and female teachers or between married and single teachers. However, locally hired teachers reported higher role insufficiency and interpersonal strain than expatriate teachers. Some significant differences in coping styles also appeared between these groups. None of the measures used revealed any significant correlations between age and years of service.
