Work stress among physicians, dubai health authority, in the year 2018-2019

Background: Work stress is a significant problem that affects physicians. Multiple sources can contribute to this problem. High-stress rates among physicians can manifest in various expressions, including cognitive, behavioral, and somatic expressions. Work performance and quality of medical care administered to patients can be undermined by over-stressed physicians. The study aimed to assess the prevalence of stress among physicians working in governmental health facilities in Dubai (2018-2019) and their relationship with socio-demographic and job factors. Methods: It is a cross-sectional study. This study population includes all physicians practicing in Dubai Health Authority hospitals and primary health care centers in the Year 2018-2019. Target Number is 1337 taken from the registry of Dubai health authority administration, but only 668 questionnaires were included with a RR of 49.9%. The data tool used in this study is a modified self-administered questionnaire from both validated health and safety executive (Barbaranelli et al., 2018) occupational stress and stress questionnaire by International Stress Management Association UK 2013. It consists of 22 items which were divided into demographic, stress indicators, factors, and other domains. They were distributed as hard copies by hand. Findings: The study concluded that 40.2% were more likely to experience stress, while 59.8% were most prone to stress. Furthermore, the study showed a strong association with different factors such as the role of managers, shift duty, and multi-task work. Conclusion: Work stress is a prevalent problem among physicians working at Dubai health authority. The stress is associated with factors: such as multi-task work, shift hours’ duties, time pressure, and the role of line manager. Implications for Occupational Health Nursing Practice or Implications for Occupational Health Practice: Healthier working environment will promote the well-being of its staff and ensure the proper delivery of care to the community.

Reflective Practice of Occupational Health Nursing During Covid-19 Pandemic: A Document Review

The Delta variant of Covid-19 is not yet completely extinct, the world is again shocked by of the new variant of Omicron, which have impact on the Occupational Health Nursing (OHN) practice. This study aims to analyze the reflection on the practice of OHN during the Covid-19 period and provide solution on the problems. This study used the document review method and PRISMA Analysis, supported by a quantitative descriptive design. The research was conducted through document search, keyword identification and article review from the Google Search Engine (n=169), Google Scholar (n=136), Research Gate (n=5), PubMed (n=10), Semantic Scholar (n= 80) and others (n=23), a total of 423 records. The three key words are reflective practice, occupational health nursing, and Covid-19. The supporting theory is Reflective Practice. The results of this study produced 8 documents that were worthy of review and 100% fulfilled the 6 key elements of OHN reflective practice, namely reflection, clinical situation or experience, promoting factors, hindering factors, and outcomes). This study recommended the need for a review of standard operating procedures of OHN related to continuing education, vaccines, safety, clinical aspects and the threat of shortage of OHNs in the midst of a pandemic.

Effect of occupational health nursing practice on musculoskeletal pains among hospital nursing staff in South Korea

Objective. The purpose of this study was to identify whether occupational health nursing variables serve as the contributing factors to musculoskeletal pains (MSP). Methods. A self-administered questionnaire composed of demographic characteristics, the practice of occupational health nursing and information regarding MSP was designed based on in-depth interviews with eight nurses. This study included 226 hospital nursing staff who worked at three university hospitals located in Seoul, South Korea. Statistical analysis was performed by using SPSS and AMOS 19.0. Results. Shoulder and neck pains occurred when subjects worked more than 46 h/week. Subjects who performed ‘work-time adjustment’ had lesser chance of having shoulder, leg/foot and wrist/finger pains. Overtime work hours showed an indirect effect on multiple sites of MSP by mediator variable, which was ‘work-time adjustment’. Organized night duty days eventually decreased multiple sites of MSP. Conclusion. Administration strategies for nurses to adjust work-time within 46 h/week should be considered.

Using the Omaha System in Occupational Health Nursing Applications: Advantages of a Common Language in the Diagnosis, Intervention and Evaluation of Nurses’ Health Problems

This study was conducted to determine the suitability of applying the Omaha System to the occupational health problems experienced by nurses working in hospitals. The Omaha System is a system which will facilitate the use of a standard common language in occupational health nursing applications. This semi-experimental study was conducted with two follow–ups. The first follow–up evaluations were carried out in a private hospital with 175 nurses out of a total of 208 nurses. The second follow-up occurred with the evaluation of 162 nurses out of a total number of 187. All nurses were scheduled to take part in the study. In between follow-up sessions, at least three interviews were conducted with the nurses experiencing problems, and applications and evaluations for the occupational environment were also carried out. Their problems were assessed according to the Omaha System. Surveillance initiatives were implemented in the nursing interventions for all diagnostic areas, and most of the nursing diagnoses were concentrated within the physiological domain. For nurses working in hospitals, the Omaha System was found to be useful in nursing diagnoses, interventions and evaluations within the practice of occupational health nursing.

Professional Autonomy of Occupational Health Nurses in the United States

Autonomy, the freedom to practice independently and to exercise professional judgment in practice activities, is a central element for professional practice. Numerous articles and studies have reported on professional autonomy in general nursing practice; however, professional autonomy for occupational health nurses has not been explored in depth. This article advances the development of a body of knowledge relative to professional autonomy in the practice of occupational health nursing. This article also provides an overview of professional autonomy in nursing practice; discusses the nature and importance of professional autonomy in the occupational health practice setting; reports findings from a seminal study of occupational health nurse autonomy; and addresses professional autonomy in the context of collaborative practice.

The Roles and Functions of Occupational Health Nurses in Brazil and in the United States

Cross-sectional exploratory research developed to outline the roles and functions of occupational health nurses (OHNs) in Brazil and compare them with those in the United States. The sample consisted of 154 Brazilian occupational health nurses. First, the instrument Job Analysis Survey of Occupational Health Nursing Practice was translated into Portuguese, followed by data collection and data analysis, comparing the results of the proposed study in Brazil with the findings of a job delineation study conducted in the United States. It was found that most were women, white, between 41 and 50 years of age and working primarily at hospitals or medical centers as clinicians and managers/administrators. Besides, it was found that most Brazilian OHNs spend more time in managerial roles, followed by consultant and educator responsibilities while, in the United States, OHNs spend significantly more time in education/advisory roles.

Human caring theory offers occupational health nurses a structure that not only defines a focus for practice, but also provides a basis for moral and philosophical practice analyses. In particular, nurses may find this theory useful in confirming the definition of “caring” and reconsidering what nursing is all about. More importantly, consideration and application of this theory may lead to research on its applicability to the field of occupational health nursing. This article presents the science and philosophy of human caring, specifically Watson's Theory of Human Caring. Two case studies are presented that demonstrate how the theory could be used to evaluate occupational health nursing practice. To demonstrate its possible relevance as an occupational health nursing framework, an analysis of and comparison to existing occupational health nursing guidelines are detailed and discussed.

Occupational health nursing practice in Australia: What occupational health nurses say they do and what they actually do

This study investigated current activities of occupational health nurses (OHN) in Australia related to the applicability of and their involvement in emergent role, wellness-based practices and traditional role and illness-based practices. A questionnaire encompassing the eight Areas of Practice as articulated by the Australian College of Occupational Health Nursing (ACOHN) competency standards was used to obtain data from 93 OHNs affiliated with ACOHN. More traditional role Areas of Practice such as treatment services, health assessment and rehabilitation services were seen as more applicable to their practice and a substantial amount of time was spent on them. Managing occupational health and safety (OH&S) service' was the only emergent area that was a substantial part of the OHN's role. Less time was devoted to other emergent and pro-active areas of OHN practice, such as illness and injury prevention, health promotion, health education and research into OH&S. While less time was allocated to emergent Areas of Practice, and they were ranked more lowly they were considered to be applicable to practice. The findings of this study suggest that OHNs in Australia may not be engaging fully in all Areas of Practice that have been articulated by the ACOHN, particularly emergent role activities. Although Australian OHNs perform all the activities articulated in the ACOHN Areas of Practice, their focus is still primarily illness and injury based, and also management. While the profession is supportive of emergent role activities, there is a need to debate possibilities, undertake research into barriers and supports for emergent role activities, more clearly articulate future directions for the OHN role, and develop strategies to support OHNs as they develop their professional role.
