SEISMICITY of KYRGYZSTAN and UZBEKISTAN in 2020

The system of seismic observations оn the territory of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in 2020 re mained unchanged: the seismic network of Kyrgyzstan included 26 seismic stations; in Uzbekistan the data from 41 seismic stations were used. Compared to last year, seismic activity in the region has increased: the number of strong earthquakes has increased, most of them occurred in the border areas of China and Tajikistan. The consol idated catalog for 2020 included 261 events with KR≥8.6. The strongest event was the earthquake with KR=14.5, occurred in China on January 19 at 13h27m. On January 17, it was preceded by two foreshocks with energy classes KR=12.9 and KR=10.8. The main shock was accompanied by many aftershocks, the strongest of which had the energy class KR=12.5. On the territory of Kyrgyzstan directly, two rather strong events took place in the border area with China: on February 15 with KR=12.0 and on May 6 with KR=12.5. On the territory of Uzbekistan, three strong earthquakes were registered: on March 26 with KR=11.8, on November 6 with KR=12.4 and on December 26 with KR=11.9.

Mobile Observation Field Experiment of Atmospheric Vertical Structure and Its Application in Precipitation Forecasts Over the Tibetan Plateau

AbstractWe carried out the first Mobile Field Observation Campaign of Atmospheric Profiles (MFOCAP) in the southeast Tibet and the Three‐River Source Region (TRSR) of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) by adopting two vehicle‐mounted integrated mobile observations (MO) system from July 18 to 30, 2021. Reliable MO data sets of air temperature (Ta), water vapor density (WVD) and relative humidity (RH) with high spatio‐temporal resolution over the TP were obtained and assimilated to improve precipitation forecast using the four‐dimensional variational (4DVAR) data assimilation (DA) method. The results show that Ta, WVD and RH profile data retrieved with the mobile microwave radiometer (MR) are credible over the TP. The atmospheric vertical structure measured by the mobile MR can reproduce the spatio‐temporal evolution characteristics of water vapor transport, temperature stratification and cloud structure. The distribution pattern of 24‐hr accumulated rainfall prediction with Ta profile DA was closer to measurements, and 6–12 hr forecasts for low to moderate rainfall in the central and western regions of Qinghai province were improved significantly. Data assimilation with air temperature retrievals from mobile MR observations were found beneficial for accurate simulation of water vapor transport, convergence and divergence of wind field, and upward motion associated with precipitation events. The finding of this study highlights the value of MR remote sensing observations in improving the rainfall monitoring and forecasts over the TP and downstream regions.

Seasonal, regional, and vertical characteristics of high-carbon-monoxide plumes along with their associated ozone anomalies, as seen by IAGOS between 2002 and 2019

Abstract. In situ measurements from the In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System (IAGOS) are used to characterise extreme values of carbon monoxide (CO) in large regions of the globe in the troposphere between 2002 and 2019. The SOFT-IO model, combining the FLEXPART Lagrangian dispersion model with emission inventories over the footprint region, is used to identify the origins of the CO in the sampled plumes. The impact of biomass burning and anthropogenic emissions on such CO plumes is characterised through CO mixing ratios and simultaneously recorded ozone (O3) ones. In the Northern Hemisphere, CO reaches its maximum values in DJF in the lower troposphere, which can be attributed to elevated anthropogenic emissions and reduced convective activity during the season. Due to the low photochemistry and the fresh age of the air masses, the O3 values of these plumes are low. CO plumes in the upper troposphere (UT) result from intense emissions and efficient vertical transport, peaking during JJA. The largest values of CO in the Northern Hemisphere are found in eastern Asia in the lower troposphere (LT) and middle troposphere (MT) and in Siberia in the upper troposphere. Among the anomalies detected in the upper troposphere in JJA, the ones with higher associated O3 values are the ones associated with biomass-burning emissions. The middle troposphere is a combination of the characteristics of the LT and the UT, with contributions from both local emissions and long-range transport. Among the studied regions, the troposphere above the Middle East and the UT above Siberia presented extremely high O3 values. Indian CO anomalies have different characteristics depending on the season, as the wet and dry phases of the monsoon have a strong impact on the transport of the pollutant in this region. Similarly, the shift in the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) strongly impacts the seasonality of the emissions and the transport patterns above Africa. In that region, convection is no longer the limiting factor, and the transport of the CO plumes is driven by the ITCZ shift, trade winds, and the upper branch of the Hadley cell redistributing the pollution to higher latitudes.

Guide to microfluidic systems and the preparation of emulsions

AbstractMicrofluidic technology, as an effective method for precise manipulation of microfluid volumes, has demonstrated significant potential in the preparation of emulsions. This guideline introduces key components of a microfluidic operating system, including the design of microfluidic chips (such as T‐junction, flow‐focusing, and co‐flowing structures), fluid driving systems, control systems, and observation and detection systems, explaining how they collaborate to accurately control the droplet generation process. In terms of specific steps for emulsion preparation, the guideline details the workflow utilizing microfluidic technology to fabricate both single‐layer O/W and W/O emulsions, as well as complex multi‐layer emulsions, emphasizing critical considerations during experimentation. Through in‐depth understanding and judicious application of microfluidic technology, there is a promise to advance emulsion preparation techniques across various domains, including drug delivery, food technology, biotechnology, and materials science.

The Newborn Infant Parasympathetic Evaluation Index for Assessment of Procedural Pain and Discomfort in Mechanically Ventilated Pediatric Intensive Care Patients: A Prospective, Exploratory, Observational Study.

The heart rate variability-based Newborn Infant Parasympathetic Evaluation (NIPE) Index is a continuous noninvasive tool for the assessment of pain and discomfort in infants. Little is known about its performance in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) setting, where assessment of pain/discomfort is usually based on discontinuous observational scoring systems or personal experience of medical staff. Evaluation of the performance of NIPE as an indicator of procedural pain and/or discomfort in conscious mechanically ventilated PICU patients. Procedural pain/discomfort was simultaneously assessed during pain- or stressful procedures by two validated discontinuous clinical scoring systems (FLACC and COMFORT-B scale) and the NIPE. NIPE values, FLACC- and COMFORT-B scores were recorded in 17 infants with a mean age of 1.2 (range 0.8-5.9) months. NIPE values associated with positive FLACC- (≥ 4; indicative of pain) and/or COMFORT-B (≥ 17, indicative of discomfort) scores were lower (p < 0.001) than when associated with negative FLACC (< 4) and/or COMFORT-B (< 17) scores with 95% CI's of a difference of -14 to -11 (FLACC), -13 to -11 (COMFORT-B) and -14 to -11 (FLACC and COMFORT-B), with significant interindividual variability in NIPE values. Logistic regression analyses revealed odds ratios between 0.84 and 0.85; the adjacent receiver operating curve analyses showed areas under the curve between 0.83 and 0.88. NIPE data recording failure occurred during 49.3% of the periods with a FLACC ≥ 4% and 40.7% with a COMFORT-B ≥ 17. The NIPE detects procedural pain and discomfort in conscious mechanically ventilated infants with an accuracy comparable to established clinical scoring systems. However, because of significant interindividual variability of NIPE values and frequent data recording failure associated with patient movement, we believe it is premature to recommend its use in conscious infants.

Vertical Profiles of Aerosol Optical Properties (VIS/NIR) over Wetland Environment: POLIMOS-2018 Field Campaign

This study aims to present the benefits of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in atmospheric aerosol research, specifically to obtain information on the vertical variability of aerosol single-scattering properties in the lower troposphere. The results discussed in this paper were obtained during the Polish Radar and Lidar Mobile Observation System (POLIMOS) field campaign in 2018 at a wetland and rural site located in the Rzecin (Poland). UAS was equipped with miniaturised devices (low-cost aerosol optical counter, aethalometer AE-51, RS41 radiosonde) to measure aerosol properties (scattering and absorption coefficient) and air thermodynamic parameters. Typical UAS vertical profiles were conducted up to approximately 1000 m agl. During nighttime, UAS measurements show a very shallow inversion surface layer up to about 100–200 m agl, with significant enhancement of aerosol scattering and absorption coefficient. In this case, the Pearson correlation coefficient between aerosol single-scattering properties measured by ground-based equipment and UAS devices significantly decreases with altitude. In such conditions, aerosol properties at 200 m agl are independent of the ground-based observation. On the contrary, the ground observations are better correlated with UAS measurements at higher altitudes during daytime and under well-mixed conditions. During long-range transport of biomass burning from fire in North America, the aerosol absorption coefficient increases with altitude, probably due to entrainment of such particles into the PBL.

Data and service management of the EPOS Volcano Observations Thematic Core Service by the European volcanological community

The Volcano Observations Thematic Core Service (VOLC-TCS) is one of ten core services forming the European Research Infrastructure Consortium for the European Plate Observing System (EPOS ERIC). The main objective of the VOLC-TCS is the implementation of a technical, financial, and legal framework compliant with EPOS ERIC to (i) strengthen the European volcanology community represented by Volcano Observatories (VOs) and Volcanological Research Institutions (VRIs), and (ii) provide virtual access to the community’s data, data products software and services (DDSSs) from volcanoes in Europe and European overseas territories. The efforts of the VOLC-TCS community began prior to the appointment of EPOS as an ERIC and have followed a long-term work plan that started in 2002. One of the main challenges for the management of volcanological data has consisted in their great heterogeneity regarding technical characteristics and also legal aspects (e.g. different data policies among the data providers, different purposes for the use of data, ranging from science to monitoring, early-warning and crisis response, and communication and outreach). Another challenge has derived from the consistency of the VOLC-TCS’ products with the overall service provision of EPOS, which merges services from different Earth Science communities (seismology, GNSS, geomagnetic, geochemistry, geology, etc.). Some of the services used in volcanology are in common with the other communities, thus the implementation work was also devoted to harmonising the data and products with standards defined by other TCSs. Yet another important task has been the implementation of the community Gateway to expose and enable access to services not fully compliant with EPOS, or to services implemented by institutions outside the EPOS perimeter, as well as to create a platform that can act as an interface between the VOLC-TCS and data infrastructures operating at a global level (e.g. WOVOdat). Based on the experience gained and the results achieved, we report here on the state of the art of the VOLC-TCS implementation since 2018 and propose future actions to address some of the main technical challenges and measures to ensure mid-to-long term sustainability of the services.

Teacher stress in social interactions in the light of polyvagal theory. An ambulatory assessment approach to teachers' heart rate and heart rate variability.

Teaching is a genuinely social and highly demanding task. Drawing on Porges' phylogenetic polyvagal theory with three evolved systems and three associated behavioral responses (social engagement, mobilization, and immobilization), we investigated teachers' heart rate and heart rate variability in social interactions using ambulatory assessments. We continuously measured heart rate and heart rate variability of 42 apparently healthy teachers on a work and leisure day with ambulatory electrocardiogram. We videotaped four consecutive, same-day lectures of each teacher. We trained observers to code student aggression and frontal teaching behaviors in an event sampling procedure with the behavior observation system for analyzing aggressive behavior in school settings. Additionally, perceived teacher-student relationship, social support from other teachers / school management, occupational complaints, and vital exhaustion were assessed by teacher self-reports. Teachers showed an increased heart rate and a decreased heart rate variability on a workday compared to a leisure day, anticipatory stress before classes, as well as insufficient recovery during lunchtime. Observed student aggression and high proportion of frontal teaching were associated with lower heart rate variability, while better perceived teacher-student relationship was correlated with higher heart rate variability. Differently, teachers' psychological strain and heart rate variability were unrelated to each other. Corresponding to polyvagal theory, results suggest that successful social interactions are fundamental for teachers' favorable cardiological reactions.

The state of Earth Observing system today: updates compiled from recent EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conferences

Abstract This work presents highlights from the 2021 and 2022 EUMETSAT conferences, drawn from their presentations, posters and panel discussions and placed into the wider context of the global Earth Observing (EO) system. These highlights collectively reveal much about the current state of knowledge about the EO system, its potential future evolutions and how that system may be used to produce useful products and services. European, American and Asian space agencies presented their visions for the next generation of operational satellite programmes and demonstrated how these will continue to improve environmental forecasting and monitoring products. User communities presented updates in the use of satellite data, including climate records, novel precipitation retrievals, drought monitoring, weather forecasting and retrievals of a broadening range of trace gases. On the technology side, discussion on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Earth observation was a major theme, particularly for weather forecasting, data assimilation or other environmental predictions. Cloud computing was another topic due to its potential to streamline the workflow of EO scientists, enhancing collaborations and unlocking access to previously-unavailable data or computing resources. Finally, discussion on the miniaturization of observational instruments was another major theme of both conferences, highlighting both the possibility of novel or enhanced observations and the emerging economic case for commercial entities to operate fleets of meteorological satellites.

Diagnosing Excessive Subsidence Across the Southeast Atlantic in the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) During ORACLES‐1

AbstractComplicated by seasonal transport of biomass burning aerosol plumes primarily overlaying the marine stratocumulus‐to‐cumulus transition, the complexity of the atmosphere over the southeast Atlantic Ocean is difficult to represent in models. Biases with respect to the height of the aerosol plume and excessive subsidence have previously been documented in MERRA‐2. This paper further diagnoses these biases, and addresses the unreasonable subsidence over the southeast Atlantic region currently simulated by the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) model during the first deployment of the ORACLES campaign in September 2016. Our study is based on model simulations where the meteorological state is constrained by the GEOS‐based MERRA‐2 reanalysis, as well as by ERA5, using the so‐called replay technique. Free running simulations with the GEOS model show excessive subsidence that begins over land such that aerosol transported by the easterly jet reaches a strip of complex terrain and is forced downward; a similar behavior can be found in the MERRA‐2 reanalysis. This excessive subsidence has been somewhat reduced by improved parameterizations found in recent versions of the GEOS model. However, any replay constrained by MERRA‐2 meteorology, even those based on recent versions of GEOS, suffer from the same excessive subsidence. An additional set of simulations in which the GEOS model was free‐running was used to quantify the role of aerosol itself in adjusting the profile of vertical motion. While self‐lofting of biomass burning aerosol reduces the subsidence over the ocean, the magnitude of its impact is only a fraction of the bias in MERRA‐2.

Economic irrigation water productivity of wheat and potato: An earth observation perspective on policy implications in the Litani Basin, Lebanon

Efficient water management is critical in addressing the challenges posed by water scarcity and resource sustainability in agriculture. However, the utilization of remote sensing technology to monitor and enhance water productivity in data-scarce environments remains an open question. This study underscores the importance of integrating earth observation systems into agricultural water management policies, elucidating their potential to shape crucial policy decisions and investment strategies, particularly in regions facing data limitations. To address this issue, we provide a comprehensive framework that blends remote sensing data with field-based economic information, to develop the concept of economic productivity of irrigation water. Leveraging FAO’s Water Productivity Open-access portal (WaPOR) data, we spatially assess yields, water use, crop water productivity, economic water productivity, and economic irrigation water productivity (EIWP) for wheat and potatoes in the Upper Litani Basin of Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. Early season potatoes outperform irrigated wheat significantly, providing up to ten times higher returns on irrigation water ($6/m3 vs. $0.6/m3). Spatial analysis shows that southern areas have 30 % lower potato EIWP than northern areas of the valley but 55 % higher wheat EIWP, mainly due to higher rainfall. Our findings reveal that merely considering crop water productivity is insufficient when deciding what to plant, as it fails to account for profitability. While transitioning to crops or practices with greater EIWP can enhance economic productivity on the short-term, it may simultaneously lead to increased water consumption. As a result, the shift towards highly water-productive systems may require measures such as controlling irrigated areas or implementing restrictions on water withdrawals to maintain stable water consumption levels. This study offers valuable insights for water resource management, agricultural policy, and sustainable water utilization, especially in semi-arid regions like the Litani Basin, providing a foundation for informed decision-making in these resource-constrained environments.

Computer Vision-Based Research on the Mechanism of Stick–Slip Vibration Suppression and Wear Reduction in Water-Lubricated Rubber Bearing by Surface Texture

Water-lubricated rubber bearings are a critical component of the propulsion systems in underwater vehicles. Particularly under conditions of low speed and high load, friction-induced vibration and wear often occur. Surface texturing technology has been proven to improve lubrication performance and reduce friction and wear; however, research on how different texture parameters affect friction-induced vibration and wear mechanisms remains insufficient. In this study, various texture patterns with different area ratios and aspect ratios were designed on the surface of water-lubricated rubber bearings. By combining these designs with an in situ observation system based on computer vision technology, the effects of texture parameters on bearing friction, vibration, and wear were thoroughly investigated. The experimental results show that surface textures play a critical role in improving hydrodynamic effects and stabilizing the lubrication film at the friction interface. Specifically, textures with a high area ratio (15%) and aspect ratio (3:1) exhibited the best vibration suppression effect, primarily due to the reduction in actual contact area. However, excessively high area ratios may lead to increased surface wear. This study concludes that a reasonable selection of texture area and aspect ratios can significantly reduce frictional force fluctuations and vibration amplitude, minimize surface wear, and extend bearing life.

The Direct Assimilation of Radar Reflectivity Data with a Two-Moment Microphysics Scheme for a Landfalling Typhoon in an OSSE Framework

Despite the well-known importance of radar data assimilation, there are limited studies on landfalling typhoons in terms of directly assimilating radar reflectivity data, especially using a reflectivity operator based on double-moment microphysics. In this study, radar reflectivity data assimilation experiments are conducted with an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), using simulated observations in an Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) framework for the landfalling typhoon In-Fa. With an OSSE, it is convenient to analyze the impact of assimilation of radar reflectivity on analysis and forecast for various state variables, especially for hydrometeors. Our results show that the direct assimilation of radar reflectivity with EnKF does not introduce non-physical hydrometeors and is able to adjust well, not only to hydrometers, but also to some large-scale variables which are not directly related to reflectivity, especially in terms of temperature and vertical velocity. Though the most notable reduction in the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSEs) is observed through mixing the ratio of rainwater and snow, the analysis of other variables is also significantly improved with the accumulation of assimilation cycles. The correlation analysis reveals the strongest correlation between radar reflectivity data and hydrometeor-related variables as well as the correlation with certain large-scale variables, indicating that these cross-variables are updated well through the reliable multivariate ensemble covariance in the EnKF. As a result, an obvious improvement in typhoon intensity and precipitation forecast is obtained in the data assimilation experiment. The impact of assimilation on radar reflectivity can last for up to 15–16 h.

Investigating Tropical Cyclone Warm Core and Boundary Layer Structures with Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate 2 Radio Occultation Data

The Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate 2 (COSMIC-2) collects data covering latitudes primarily between 40 degrees north and south, providing abundant data for tropical cyclone (TC) research. The radio occultation data provide valuable information on the boundary layer. However, quality control of the data within the boundary layer remains a challenging issue. The aim of this study is to obtain a more accurate COSMIC-2 radio occultation (RO) dataset through quality control (QC) and use this dataset to validate warm core structures and explore the planetary boundary layer (PBL) structures of TCs. In this study, COSMIC-2 data are used to analyze the distribution of the relative local spectral width (LSW) and the confidence parameter characterizing the random error of the bending angle. An LSW less than 20% is set as a data QC threshold, and the warm core and PBL composite structures of TCs at three intensities in the Northwest Pacific Ocean are investigated. We reproduce the warm core intensity and warm core height characteristics of TCs. In the radial direction of the typhoon eyewall, the impact height of the PBL increases from 3.45 km to 4 km, with the tropopause ranging from 160 hPa to 100 hPa. At the bottom of the troposphere, the variations in the positive and negative bias between the RO-detected and background field bending angles correspond well to the PBL heights, and the variations in the positive bias between the RO-detected and background field refractivity reach 14%. This research provides an effective QC method and reveals that the bending angle is sensitive to the PBL height.

Enhancing behavioral assessment: utilizing the BASC-3 student observation system in educational settings in Qatar

Direct observation of classroom behavior in young children enriches our understanding of their behavior in its natural context, informing both assessment and intervention strategies to foster supportive learning environments. However, a notable gap in the literature concerning effective direct observation tools specifically designed for this purpose remains challenging. This observational study utilized the digital format of the The Student Observation System (BASC-3-SOS; Reynolds & Kamphaus, 2015), enabling behavior recording via smartphones, tablets, or laptops. We conducted observations for 43 young children aged four and five in classroom settings. Thirty of these children had been previously identified with behavioral problems via the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ, Child Psychol Psychiatry Allied Discip. 38(5), 581–6, 1997), while 13 were considered typically developing. Each child was observed over three 20-min sessions, totaling 60 min per child. The findings revealed a significant correlation between the SDQ scores and BASC-3-SOS assessments in adaptive and maladaptive behaviors. The results indicate that young children’s engagement and problem behaviors vary with teacher interactions and classroom activities. children identified with behavioral issues exhibited higher levels of maladaptive behaviors compared to their typically developing peers. The study presents the BASC-3-SOS as a promising tool for identifying general behavioral and emotional risks among young children in Qatar, suggesting its utility in enhancing early educational interventions.

Informing Near-Airport Satellite NO2 Retrievals Using Pandora Sky-Scanning Observations.

Airports are a large and growing source of NO x . Tracking airport-related emissions is especially difficult, as a portion of emissions are elevated above the surface. While satellite-based NO2 observations show hot-spots near airports, near-source retrievals often have large biases related to uncertainties in the NO2 vertical distribution and resultant air mass factors (AMF). Here we use observations from UV-vis spectrometers (Pandora 1S, SciGlob) deployed near the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International airport from April 2020-May 2021 to assess the impact of aviation on NO2 vertical profiles. We show the first near-airport sky-scanning Pandora observations, which are used to distinguish the airport plume from the urban background. We find that increasing aviation leads to higher NO2 over the airport, and the enhancement is distributed across the mixed layer near-equally. We compare observed profiles with those modeled by the Goddard Earth Observing System composition forecast (GEOS-CF) system. We find that modeled profiles attribute a larger portion of the column closer to the surface and underestimate the NO2 mixing height. Observed profiles typically exhibited greater NO2 concentrations up to 2.5 km above ground level. Air mass factors (AMF) calculated using observations (AMFFused) are similar over Hartsfield-Jackson to those calculated using GEOS-CF (AMFGEOS-CF). The unexpected similarity in alternative AMFs is attributed to the altitude-dependent sensitivity of AMFFused to changes in NO2 concentration. Using either AMFFused or AMFGEOS-CF to evaluate TROPOMI NO2 against independent direct-sun observations produces consistent normalized mean differences of -22% and -29%, respectively. Overall, these results demonstrate the benefits of a combined ground and satellite-based approach for probing a complex distribution of NO x emissions in an urban area.

Development and Evaluation of Machine Learning Models for Air-to-Land Temperature Conversion Using the Newly Established Kunlun Mountain Gradient Observation System

Mountainous land types are characterized by a scarcity of observational data, particularly in remote areas such as the Kunlun Mountains, where conventional Automatic Weather Stations (AWSs) typically do not record land surface temperature (LST) data. This study aims to develop and evaluate models for converting air temperature (TA) to LST using newly established meteorological station data from the Kunlun Mountain Gradient Observation System, thereby providing time-continuous LST data for AWSs. We constructed a conceptual model to explore the relationship between 1.5 m TA and LST and instantiated it using three machine learning algorithms: Support Vector Machine (SVR), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and CatBoost. The results demonstrated that the CatBoost algorithm outperformed the others under complex terrain and climatic conditions, achieving a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.997 and the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.627 °C, indicating superior robustness and accuracy. Consequently, CatBoost was selected as the optimal model. Additionally, this study analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of cloud cover in the Kunlun Mountain region using the MOD11A1 product and assessed the uncertainties introduced by the 8-day average compositing method of the MOD11A2 product. The results revealed significant discrepancies between the monthly average LST derived from polar-orbiting satellites and the hourly composite monthly LST measured on-site or under ideal cloud-free conditions. These differences were particularly pronounced in high-altitude regions (4000 m and above), with the greatest differences occurring in winter, reaching up to 10.2 °C. These findings emphasize the importance of hourly LST calculations based on AWSs for accurately assessing the spatiotemporal characteristics of LST in the Kunlun Mountains, thus providing more precise spatiotemporal support for remote sensing applications in high-altitude regions.

Snowy Dove: An open-sourcetoolkit for pre- processing of Chinese Gaofen series data.

Since the launch of the Chinese High-resolution Earth Observation System (CHEOS) program, China has strengthened its research and development in the field of satellite remote sensing. A large number of sensors has been or will be launched, providing very large data streams which all require processing of the engineering data, as provided by the instruments, to physical data which will be used for further processing and interpretation. To handle such large data streams we developed a one-click batch pre-processing toolkit for CHEOS remote sensing data as described in this paper. In this toolkit, IDL language and environment are used as the primary program combined with other programming languages developed in this research. In this paper, we first describe the Gaofen (GF) series data used in this research and then introduce the function design and realization of this one-click batch pre-processing toolkit. Some examples will be presented to illustrate the application of the toolkit to data from several CHEOS satellites.

Geodynamic hazard assessment for the archaeological park-museum by the town of Nikopol

This study was conducted to establish the engineering geological and hydrogeological conditions of the site and to assess the geodynamic hazard in relation to the design and construction of the archaeological park-museum and feeder road in the town of Nikopol (Bulgaria). The studied terrain occupies a river terrace and the foot of a delluvial slope with an elevation of 23-68 m. The tasks of the study are to identify: the geological structure of the slope, the area and depth range of the landslides, the location of the slip surface, the physical and mechanical properties of the engineering geological strata, the hydrogeological conditions, the current stability of landslides, the change of slope stability under the action of various factors. The ground investigation includes analysis of archival and published information on the area; geodetic survey of the landslide; engineering geological mapping; exploratory boreholes; geophysical surveys using the VES method; testing of soil and water samples; compilation of longitudinal engineering geological profiles and slope stability analysis using the computational models. To the south of the study site the slope is affected by an ancient landslide with a volume of about 30 million m3 developed on the right valley slope of the Danube River in the section between the plateau and the river terrace. Consistent landslides occur in its lower part. Slope stability calculations show that the landslides are triggered by a rise in the groundwater level, an earthquake and undermining of the slope base. Rock-falls has developed on the steep rock slopes, composed of moderately to highly weathered and fractured cherty and glauconitic limestones. The size of the rockfall blocks is in the range 0.3-0.8 m3 and their transport distance reaches from 10 m to 50 m from the base of the slope. Stabilization measures and facilities are proposed to strengthen the landslides and rockfalls in the considered section of the slope. For the landslides it is proposed to implement a counterfort embankment on which to build the feeder road, drainage ribs and drainage ditches. For protection of the buildings from collapsing rock debris, an anchored high-strength net is recommended. The design takes into account the trajectory of the falling blocks and their kinetic energy. For monitoring the condition of the landslides and rockfalls, as well as for evaluating the effectiveness of the implemented strengthening, drainage and coastal protection structures, a control and measurement system for regime observation was built.
