Promoting Quality in Nursing Education in Canada through a Canadian Examination for Baccalaureate Nurses.

Since its creation in 1942, the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing's mandate has been to foster high-quality nursing education in Canada in the interest of healthier Canadians. To this end, the Canadian Examination for Baccalaureate Nurses/l'examen canadien du baccalauréat en sciences infirmières (CEBN/ECBSI) has been developed and will be launched in 2020. Its purpose, what the Canadian Examination for Baccalaureate Nurses designation signifies and the development of the examination are described.

The emergence of gerontological nursing education in Canada: Gerontological nursing education is still in its infancy in Canada

Summary Changing demographics and greater demands for nursing expertise in caring for the aged are increasing the support in Canada for gerontological nursing education. However, gerontological nursing is not yet an area of focus receiving high priority in many Canadian nursing education programs. Gerontological nursing education is in its infancy in Canada, and numerous questions remain unanswered. For example, what was the influence of geriatric medical education on the historical development of gerontological nursing education? Findings of our preliminary research into articulating and understanding the history of Canadian gerontological nursing education may enhance the professional identity of gerontological nurses. Awareness of milestones in the development of gerontological nursing education in Canada, and of the role of its leaders, provides insight into the historical context underlying current issues. Finally, awareness and comprehension elucidates, and gives value to, individual and collective achievement within this nursing specialty. Our voyage of historical discovery will continue to be filled with excitement and challenge as we further explore this new frontier.

Curriculum innovation for gerontological nursing in Canada: A health for all systems based approach

This paper presents an educational model † † The authors acknowledge assistance in the initial development of this model from the Education Centre for Ageing and Health (ECAH). ECAH was established in the Faculty of Health Science at McMaster University in 1987 with funding from the Ontario Government through the Ministry of Colleges and Universities. The educational model has been developed within the frameworks of national and international advancements in nursing. It takes into account the recent developments in Primary Health Care/Health For All (PHC/HFA), as promoted by the World Health Organization and supported by the International Council of Nurses. that follows the General Systems approach and illustrates the advancement of gerontological nursing education in Canada. The model's primary focus is placed on baccalaureate education, the mandate of the nursing discipline group. The paper also touches briefly on Masters and Doctoral education. Implications for use of this model in nursing education are then linked to nursing care of the elderly.
