Access and Usage of Electronic Resources used by the Faculty Members, Research Scholar, and Students of the Sun Arts and Science College Affiliated to the Thiruvalluvar University

This is the paper on Electronic resources; the users collect information from the Library via electronic resources the users Learn and collect them, it impacts the collection of print and electronic sources its awareness among the users, and the places where the users are accessing these resources. A survey was conducted is conducted at the Sun Arts and Science College Thiruvannamalai Affiliated with Thiruvalluvar University. A total number of 88 respondents questionnaires are issued to the respondents and 77 respondents answered and Submit the researcher for study Members was selected and their reply was obtained with the help of a questionnaire. The findings show that users were using e-resources the responsiveness about e-resources encourages users to use such resources to the highest and the users are using Department and home more for accessing the information. E-resources were visible from the decrease in the number of printed documents in comparison to the increase in the number of electronic resources. The use of Resources has increased multiple.

The urgency of the problem is associated with an increase in the number of electronic resources in many information and library institutions, the need to search for information from any sources, including external ones, the provision of documents from a group of funds (corporations), the presence of electronic catalogs and search systems. Finding information from catalogs and other search engines has always preceded the execution of orders in the interlibrary service. Borrowing and using documents from different collections (provision of interlibrary services) is possible only if there is up-to-date metadata of modern information retrieval systems (ISS). The purpose of the article is to summarize the results of studying several types of search engines. At the same time, attention was drawn to new scientific publications on the topic under study. An analysis of domestic and foreign materials on the options for searching for information is presented, which is very necessary for users, including those who are remote in the provision of interlibrary services.

Adding Semantics to the Legal Domain

Information search and retrieval are part of daily routines of the legal profession. Lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and legal clerks usually access a number of electronic resources to browse, search, select, or update legal contents. Legal databases have currently become large digital libraries where the tasks related to information-seeking may sometimes be cumbersome. Adding semantics to support information search may provide significant results in terms of efficiency, efficacy, and user satisfaction. The main objective of this presentation is to offer several examples of how semantic technologies may be able to improve legal information search in the judicial and lawyers’ domains. However, legal professionals sometimes prefer following routines than changing their information search behavior. New trends in Semantic Web technologies may help to improve both professional and laymen’s skills.

Web service for connecting visually impaired people with libraries

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe a case study of developing a web service that will act as an intermediary between the Audio Library system for the visually impaired and the library management systems. The Audio Library is based on speech recognition and text-to-speech engines and it produces synthesized speech from various electronic materials. It has its own database with a limited number of books and textual materials. Web services described in this paper should enable access to a larger number of electronic resources provided by libraries. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, the author specified software architecture of a web service analyzing different approaches for search and retrieval. Findings – Web service described in this paper is the first software solution addressing the problem of lending e-books in Serbia. It aggregates collections of different libraries in a single access point for the Audio Library system. In this way, users of the Audio Library system are provided with larger number of electronic resources. Originality/value – Communication between the Audio Library and this web service is achieved by using standardized protocols for exchanging library data. However, those protocols did not fulfill all necessary requirements, so the authors propose some extensions to overcome those issues.

Health information support provided by professional associations in Canada

Healthcare practitioners in Alberta and across Canada have varying levels of access to information resources depending on their institutional and professional affiliations, yet access to current health information is critical for all. To determine what information resources and services are provided by Albertan and Canadian professional health associations to their members. Representatives of professional colleges and associations were interviewed regarding information resources and services offered to members and perceptions of their members' information needs. National-level associations are more likely to provide resources than provincial ones. There is a clear distinction between colleges and associations in terms of information offered: colleges provide regulatory information, while associations are responsible for provision of clinical information resources. Only half of the associations interviewed provide members with access to licensed databases, with cost being a major barrier. There is considerable variation in the number of electronic resources and the levels of information support provided by professional health associations in Alberta and Canada. Access and usage vary among the health professions. National licensing of resources or creation of a portal linking to freely available alternatives are potential options for increasing access and awareness.

Integrated Learning Courses and Library Resources with Personal Knowledge Map

There have been many growing learning materials in Internet. With the popularization of the Internet, digital learning has become a new method of knowledge acquisition. The range of electronic resources from online databases to e-books and e-journals, different resources gains in different service providers. More and more people like to take the digital courses to discuss the topics or the issues which they are interested. Online course has become an important knowledge exchange platform in virtual world. Personal knowledge maps can follow the research interests of learners and learning process as learners need a wide range of electronic resources to be integrated. Currently, although a number of electronic resources will introduce by libraries. However, lack of effective organization and integrated in the single user interface, the user must learn multiple interfaces for the use of electronic resources. The personal knowledge map system has three notable characteristics. First, connect the courses and online resources. Second, visualize the learning process. Third, combine the library resources into courses. Fourth, group the students with the same learning interests.

ABSTRACT The explosion in the number of electronic resources has necessi tated that academic libraries rethink the way they manage the life cycle of their electronic resource s within the structure and processes of their library. With this momentum, led by the Digital Library F ederation's Electronic Resources Management Initiative, specifications and tools for electronic resources h as been devised. Summary Librarians from two different types of libraries-one a university library and the other a biomedical library-discussed how their libraries have adapted to the changes brought on by increasing numbers of electronic resources. They specifically addressed staffing and workflow issues, how to create more linkages between diverse systems, and ultimately stressed the goal of providing excellent customer service. Both libraries employ a model that includes adding electronic resources to the catalog, as well as creating Web pages for access.

Electronic Reference Works and Library Budgeting Dilemma

SUMMARY The number of electronic resources has climbed up steadily in recent times. Some of these e-resources are reference sources, mostly in Science, Technology and Medicine (STM), which publishers convert to electronic for obvious reasons. The library budgets for materials usually have two main lines, budget for one time purchase (monographs) and budget for ongoing subscriptions (serials). It therefore becomes an issue when pricing model is not stable and this balance cannot be maintained. Changing Titles, Changing Duties

An anticipated change in the proportion of print and electronic serial titles held at the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, coinciding with a vacancy in the Serials Librarian position, prompted Himmelfarb staff to re-examine the position's responsibilities and duties. In an effort to relieve the burden of managing an exploding number of electronic resources on the existing Electronic Resources and Instructional Librarian, electronic serials management was redistributed to the Serials Librarian. This paper discusses the environment leading to the change, the process of restructuring the position description, and the outcomes after the hire of a Print and Electronic Serials Librarian.

Electronic resource management systems: the need and the realization

PurposeThis paper aims to provide an overview of the trends and standards in electronic‐resource management (ERM).Design/methodology/approachThis paper examines the challenges that rapid growth in the number of electronic resources and in the complexity of managing e‐collections has posed for libraries, and traces the progress in developing tools and setting standards to address such challenges. Particular emphasis is given to the work of the Digital Library Federation Electronic Resource Management Initiative (DLF ERMI) to develop ERM systems not only for managing e‐collections throughout their life cycle but also for aiding collection‐development decision making. The integration of such systems in existing library environments and the mechanisms that make such integration possible are highlighted. Finally, the paper describes the collaborative process through which one vendor, Ex Libris, designed its ERM system, Verde.FindingsCollaboration between vendors and customers – in this example, Ex Libris and its users – combined with attentiveness to industry initiatives and standards can lead to a system design that responds to the demanding and rapidly changing requirements of the e‐resource world and builds on the software infrastructure already available at libraries.Originality/valueThis discussion will help librarians who struggle with the challenge of e‐resource management to set their expectations about the potential of future tools to assist them in their tasks.

Electronic Resource Management Systems

Computer applications which deal with electronic resource management (ERM) are quite a recent development. They have grown out of the need to manage the burgeoning number of electronic resources particularly electronic journals. Typically, in the early years of e-journal acquisition, library staff provided an easy means of accessing these journals by providing an alphabetical list on a web page. Some went as far as categorising the e-journals by subject and then grouping the journals either on a single web page or by using multiple pages. It didn't take long before it was recognised that it would be more efficient to dynamically generate the pages from a database rather than to continually edit the pages manually. Of course, once the descriptive metadata for an electronic journal was held within a database the next logical step was to provide administrative forms whereby that metadata could be manipulated. This in turn led to demands for incorporating more information and more functionality into the developing application.

Developing an Electronic Resource Management System: Verde from Ex Libris

Rapid growth in the number of electronic resources and the complexity of managing e-collections has posed new challenges for libraries and hence requires the development of new tools. To meet this need, Ex Libris is developing a new product, an electronic resource management (ERM) system. The development process began in 2002 and has benefited from the company's 25 years of experience in providing libraries with various products - an integrated library system, digital asset management system, library portal, and link server. Working with an international focus group and development partners and interacting with the Digital Library Federation's Electronic Resource Management Initiative (DLF ERMI) committee, Ex Libris explored the various aspects of the e-resource life cycle. As a result, the Ex Libris ERM system was designed to address the issues raised through this collaboration and the DLF requirements. The interface of the system represents all of its components; it includes navigation options and facilitates workflows that support the various activities that librarians perform when dealing with electronic resources. This paper describes the development process of the Ex Libris ERM system. The emphasis is on the particular functionality required for managing e-resources and the ways in which existing systems in the library arena can handle specific tasks.

One for Nine: The Shared Cataloging Program of the California Digital Library

In 1999, the California Digital Library (CDL) began a new cooperative venture, the Shared Cataloging Program, to improve access to its growing collection of electronic resources. Now known within the University of California (UC) as the SCP, the Shared Cataloging Program, based at UC San Diego, distributes ready-to-use cataloging records for all electronic titles licensed by the CDL to each of the other eight (soon to be nine) physical UC campuses. The SCP is the result of an intensive systemwide planning process fostered by a desire for an innovative approach to providing traditional bibliographic access to large numbers of electronic resources. It was launched out of pragmatic necessity along with an institutional commitment to the cooperative ideals of labor-savings, experimentation, and the search for “best practices.” This article will describe its genesis, current operation, one library's use of the records, and issues for future development. Forget ‘static’ ‐ get ‘dynamic’! Using Active Server Pages to manage electronic resources

As academic libraries subscribe to a growing number of electronic resources, traditional static HTML pages are becoming increasingly unmanageable. This article describes Durham University Library’s efforts to create database‐driven dynamic web pages which enable the user to locate the resources they need whilst also remaining manageable for library staff.

Library Portals, Simultaneous Search, and Full-Text Linking Technologies

SUMMARY Libraries are engaged in the development of customized portals or information gateways designed to reduce information overload and provide enhanced access to distributed information resources. Among the concerns that are being addressed in the next generation of library portals are: (1) providing enhanced navigation and linking through the rapidly growing number of electronic resources, in particular full-text resources; and (2) providing the capability of searching multiple information resources-such as periodical index databases, the library online catalog, and Web search engines-from a single user interface form. The technologies that will provide linking between discrete full-text resources and from periodical index databases and online catalogs to full-text will become increasingly important. These linking technologies are being built around information standards such as the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and the CrossRef publishers' initiative. Libraries are also building e-resource registry databases that identify and provide links to available licensed electronic full-text resources. This paper will describe the role of portal services and examine the technologies involved in full-text linking. The paper will also describe a portal application that was developed at the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Cham-paign (UIUC), which features simultaneous search and dynamic linking capabilities over multiple information resources. This simultaneous search service provides a model for synchronous searching of information resources and offers full-text linking capabilities built around a custom UIUC e-resource database, the CrossRef metadata database, and the article DOI.

The impact of Web publishing on the organization of cataloging functions

Cataloging rules have long been organized according to the physical format and monograph versus serial nature of publications. This organization of the rules has resulted in the rise of several typical organizational models that make these same delineations. Web publishing is having a profound effect on both the nature of publications and the number of electronic resources being published and selected for inclusion in library catalogs, and is causing a major shift in the type of materials finding their way into cataloging workflows. Institutions that organize their cataloging functions according to one of the traditional models are finding themselves increasingly unable to meet the demands being placed upon them in this new environment. Traditional models of organization can, and must, be modified to successfully deal with this problem.
