Combining beef cattle and sheep in an organic system. I. Co-benefits for promoting the production of grass-fed meat and strengthening self-sufficiency.

Numerous advantages of combining cattle and sheep have been demonstrated at the grazing-season level, but the effects of this practice on system self-sufficiency require system-level and longer-term studies. We established three grassland-based organic systems as separate farmlets: one mixed system combining beef cattle and sheep (MIX) and two specialised systems, beef cattle (CAT) and sheep (SH), to serve as reference points. These farmlets were managed for 4years, to assess the benefits of combining beef cattle and sheep in promoting the production of grass-fed meat and strengthening system self-sufficiency. The ratio of cattle to sheep livestock units in MIX was 60:40. The surface area and stocking rate were similar across all systems. Calving and lambing were adjusted to grass growth to optimise grazing. Calves were pasture-fed from 3months old on average until weaning in October, fattened indoors with haylage and slaughtered at 12-15months. Lambs were pasture-fed from 1month old on average until slaughter; if lambs were not ready for slaughter when the ewes mated, they were stall-finished with concentrates. The decision to supplement adult females with concentrate was based on the achievement of a target body condition score (BCS) at key periods. The decision to treat animals with anthelmintics was based on mean faecal egg excretion remaining below a certain threshold. A higher proportion of lambs were pasture-finished in MIX vs SH (P<0.001) due to a higher growth rate (P<0.001) which led to a lower age at slaughter (166 vs 188days, P<0.001). Ewe prolificacy and productivity were higher in MIX vs SH (P<0.02 and P<0.065, respectively). The levels of concentrate consumption and number of anthelmintic treatments in sheep were lower in MIX vs SH (P<0.01 and P<0.08). Cow productivity, calf performance, carcass characteristics and the level of external inputs used did not differ between systems. However, cow BW gain during the grazing season was higher in MIX vs CAT (P<0.05). These outcomes validated our hypothesis that the association of beef cattle and sheep promoted the self-sufficient production of grass-fed meat in the sheep enterprise. It also promoted better ewe and cow BCS and BW at key stages of the reproduction cycle and better development of the females used for replacement, which may enhance animal and system resilience.

Evaluation of cross-grazing deer with sheep or cattle, as means to reduces anthelmintic usage to control gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes in farmed red deer (Cervus elaphus) in New Zealand

Recent reports indicate that gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are contributing to significant losses in deer productivity and that anthelmintic resistance has become an issue of concern for deer farmers in New Zealand. The aim of this study was to evaluate cross-grazing of deer with sheep or cattle as an aid for control of gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematode parasites of farmed red deer (Cervus elaphus) in New Zealand. This was a field study replicated over two years (2012 and 2013) for 16 weeks each year at two locations (Massey University, Palmerston North and Invermay AgResearch Centre, Mosgiel). Each farm replicate included four groups (19–20 deer) at each location: red deer cross-grazing with cattle (Deer/Cattle); red deer cross-grazing with sheep (Deer/Sheep); red deer grazing on their own (DeerOwn); and red deer grazing on their own and treated with anthelmintics every two weeks to suppress worm burdens, as a positive control (DeerSup). The key outcome was the number of anthelmintic treatments (AT) given to deer. The decision to treat individual resident deer in Deer/Cattle, Deer/Sheep and DeerOwn groups was based on “trigger” criteria including faecal egg count (FEC)≥250 eggs/g or Dictyocaulus faecal larval count (FLC)≥100 larvae/g or when growth rate was less than 80 % of the mean of the DeerSup group in the previous two weeks. In addition, to quantify the species of parasites cycling in each group, sets of three “tracer” deer were introduced to graze with each group at the mid-point and again at the end of each 16 week period in both years at both locations. Least squares means (LSM) of the number of AT given per animal for Deer/Sheep (3.4) and DeerOwn (3.3) groups were significantly higher than for the Deer/Cattle (2.7) group (p < 0.001). In tracer animals, the LSM of abomasal Trichostrongylus spp. were significantly fewer in the DeerOwn (17), Deer/Cattle (37) and DeerSup (54) groups than in the Deer/Sheep (952; p < 0.001) group. The LSM of the nematodes in the subfamily Ostertagiinae (=Ostertagia-type) were significantly more in the DeerOwn (1950) than in Deer/Sheep (370; p = 0.003) and DeerSup (238; p < 0.001) groups, but the number in the Deer/Cattle group (689) was not different to DeerOwn (p> 0.05). The LSM of lungworm were fewer in Deer/Sheep (3), Deer/Cattle (4) and DeerSup (3; p < 0.001) groups than in DeerOwn (40) group. The Deer/Cattle and DeerSup groups had significantly higher LSM of liveweight gain over the 16 weeks (p < 0.001) than the other two groups. This study demonstrated that cross-grazing with either sheep or cattle aided control of lungworm and gastrointestinal nematodes in young deer during autumn. However, the advantages varied between the use of sheep or cattle and in the ability to control different species of parasites.

Preliminary Data from Six Years of Selective Anthelmintic Treatment on Five Horse Farms in France and Switzerland.

Simple SummaryToday, anthelmintic resistance (AR) of small strongyles (cyathostomins) against all presently available anthelmintics for equids poses on many horse farms worldwide huge problems with regard to an efficient and satisfactory parasite control. Therefore, alternative parasite control schemes are urgently needed. The so-called selective anthelmintic or targeted selective treatment (SAT) is one of the concepts considered to delay or even to overcome this challenging AR-situation. In the present field study, all 93 equids (90 horses, 3 ponies) from five horse riding farms in France and Switzerland were regularly sampled (spring and autumn) and the feces were analyzed for a period of six years. From a total of 757 fecal samples, only 263 (34.7%) had a fecal egg count ≥200 Eggs per Gram (EpG) (threshold) and consequently needed an anthelmintic treatment. A long-term reduction in the number of anthelmintic treatments can be expected on a herd and on the individual horse level, respectively, when comparing to a conventional (or strategic) twice per year treatment regime.Anthelmintic resistance (AR) of small strongyle populations (cyathostomins) against products of the benzimidazole and tetrahydropyrimidine classes occurs now worldwide and there is an increasing number of reports also regarding macrocyclic lactones. Consequently, and in order to maintain an appropriate horse parasite control, alternative control schemes must be evaluated under field conditions. Here we present a six-year field study on the administration of the so-called selective or targeted selective anthelmintic treatment (SAT) concept. In this study on five horse farms in France and Switzerland, 757 fecal samples from 93 equids (90 horses, 3 ponies) have been taken twice a year (between early and late spring and between early and late autumn) from autumn 2014 to spring 2020 and processed by a McMaster technique. From a total of 757 samples, only 263 (34.7%) had a fecal egg count ≥200 EpG and needed an anthelmintic treatment. This small number of fecal samples ≥200 EpG demonstrates the considerable potential for a long-term reduction of the number of anthelmintic treatments and the anthelmintic pressure by using the SAT-programme.

RESISTÊNCIA À VERMINOSE E SUPLEMENTAÇÃO PROTEICA NO PERIPARTO: EFEITO NO PARASITISMO E NO DESEMPENHO REPRODUTIVO DE OVELHAS DO GRUPAMENTO RACIAL PANTANEIRO

Resumo Os objetivos do trabalho foram avaliar o efeito do grau de resistência à verminose e da suplementação proteica nos índices reprodutivos e no parasitismo em ovelhas do grupamento racial Pantaneiro. As ovelhas foram classificadas pelo número de ovos de nematodas por grama de fezes (OPG) como resistentes (RR), sensíveis (SS) e intermediárias (RS), e submetidas (SUPL) ou não (NSUPL) à suplementação durante o terço final da gestação e na lactação. Em dois ciclos reprodutivos, a cada 28 dias, as ovelhas foram pesadas e tratadas com anti-helmínticos quando o OPG apresentava-se ≥ 4000. O peso das ovelhas não foi influenciado pelo grau de resistência aos nematódeos e a suplementação teve efeito no peso somente no período em que foi ofertada. As taxas de natalidade e de desmame não foram influenciadas pelo grau de resistência e pela suplementação. A taxa de mortalidade de crias foi menor no grupo SUPL. A taxa de mortalidade de ovelhas foi três vezes mais elevada no grupo SS em relação ao grupo RR e o peso das crias foi menor no grupo SS em relação aos grupos RR e RS. Os três grupos mostraram picos no OPG durante o terço final da gestação, mas as médias foram sempre menores no grupo RR que, no geral, necessitaram 2,5 vezes menos tratamentos anti-helmínticos que as SS. A suplementação não apresentou correlação com o OPG e com o número de tratamentos anti-helmínticos. A classificação de ovelhas pelo OPG em resistentes aos nematodas proporcionou menor número de tratamentos anti-helmínticos, menor taxa de mortalidade de ovelhas e peso maior das crias ao nascimento.

Parasite control on thoroughbred studs

the two published EU directives (2001, 2006) which aim at performing diagnostic steps before treatment and reducing the use of drugs. Highly relevant are the findings that on average more than 40% of adult horses (>4 years) either do not show any strongyle egg output at all, or egg counts below the defined treatment threshold level of 200 EpG, i. e. the number of anthelmintic treatments could be significantly reduced. On some farms the reduction was more than 60% when compared to the previous strategic treatment schedules, since only those horses are treated which considerably contribute to the pasture contamination. Furthermore, the number of horses which had to be treated in the 2nd year of SAT according to the threshold level e significantly decreased in a specifically designed study, suggesting that the number of treatments can possibly be further reduced with time. An appropriate SAT procedure includes at the same time the evaluation of the prevalence of Strongylus vulgaris and the status of AR, resp. In-depth spectrum analyses in Germany and Switzerland revealed S. vulgaris prevalences of < 2%. Preliminary results show that horses < 4 years cannot be treated according to the same schedule. However, preliminary data from monitoring programs on stud/foal keeping farms provide some indications that a SAT approach might be possible when considering a different threshold level, the occurrence of P. equorum and the additional work for sample collection. Analyzing more than 2500 fecal samples from 303 horses has clearly shown the existence of a repeatability of fecal egg counts (FEC) over time by the identification of so-called high and low egg-shedders. Statistical analyses have proven a significant within-horse-repeatability. This further supports the idea that FECs can be used as a solid basis for resulting treatment decisions in adult horses.

Viability of the Happy Factor™ targeted selective treatment approach on several sheep farms in Scotland

The aim of this study was to examine the use of Happy Factor™ weight based targeted selective treatment (TST) on several commercial farms in Scotland in combination with findings from a long term trial on a research farm to assess the potential for TST use in varying farming operations as an alternative to the current regimen of whole flock treatment. Lambs on each farm were regularly weighed and climatic conditions and pasture availability measured for inclusion into the Happy Factor™ model to calculate weight targets. Half of the lambs were allocated to TST treatment and any failing to reach the weight target was treated with the anthelmintic of choice on that farm, while the remaining half of each flock was treated with anthelmintic as per normal practice on that farm (routine treatment, RT). The research farm (farm 1) hosted a long term trial using four anthelmintic treatment regimes over 6 years, and data from two regimes are presented here, alongside findings from three further farms: two commercial enterprises (farms 2 and 3) and a research farm operating as a commercial analogue with two breeds (farms 4a and 4b). The effect of TST strategy on lamb productivity and the number of anthelmintic treatments was investigated. There was no evidence (p>0.300) that mean bodyweight or growth rate was different between TST and RT groups on any of the farms and 95% confidence intervals of TST and RT groups generally suggested that TST had negligible unfavourable effects on the average growth of lambs for most of the farms. Growth rates ranged from 97.39 to 189.16g/day reflecting the varied nature of the farms. All commercial farms used significantly less (1.34 RT versus 1.14 TST treatments per animal, p<0.05) anthelmintic in lambs following TST, with a reduction from 1, 1, 1.03 and 1.14 to 0.77, 0.57, 0.82 and 0.81 in the number of treatments per animal for farms 2, 3, 4a and 4b respectively. This study suggests that TST is a viable means of controlling parasitic disease without incurring production losses.

A preference-based approach to deriving breeding objectives: applied to sheep breeding

Using internet-based software known as 1000Minds, choice-experiment surveys were administered to experts and farmers from the Irish sheep industry to capture their preferences with respect to the relative importance – represented by part-worth utilities – of target traits in the definition of a breeding objective for sheep in Ireland. Sheep production in Ireland can be broadly separated into lowland and hill farming systems; therefore, each expert was asked to answer the survey first as if he or she were a lowland farmer and second as a hill farmer. In addition to the experts, a group of lowland and a group of hill farmers were surveyed to assess whether, and to what extent, the groups’ preferences differ from the experts’ preferences. The part-worth utilities obtained from the surveys were converted into relative economic value terms per unit change in each trait. These measures – referred to as ‘preference economic values’ (pEVs) – were compared with economic values for the traits obtained from bio-economic models. The traits ‘value per lamb at the meat processor’ and ‘lamb survival to slaughter’ were revealed as being the two most important traits for the surveyed experts responding as lowland and hill farmers, respectively. In contrast, ‘number of foot baths per year for ewes’ and ‘number of anthelmintic treatments per year for ewes’ were the two least important traits. With the exception of ‘carcase fat class’ (P < 0.05), there were no statistically significant differences in the mean pEVs obtained from the surveyed experts under both the lowland and hill farming scenarios. Compared with the economic values obtained from bio-economic models, the pEVs for ‘lambing difficulty’ when the experts responded as lowland farmers were higher (P < 0.001); and they were lower (P < 0.001) for ‘carcase conformation class’, ‘carcase fat class’ (less negative) and ‘ewe mature weight’ (less negative) under both scenarios. Compared with surveyed experts, pEVs from lowland farmers differed significantly for ‘lambing difficulty’, ‘lamb survival to slaughter’, ‘average days to slaughter of lambs’, ‘number of foot baths per year for ewes’, ‘number of anthelmintic treatments per year for ewes’ and ‘ewe mature weight’. Compared with surveyed experts, pEVs from hill farmers differed significantly for ‘lambing difficulty’, ‘average days to slaughter of lambs’ and ‘number of foot baths per year for ewes’. This study indicates that preference-based tools have the potential to contribute to the definition of breeding objectives where production and price data are not available.

Parasite control practices on Swedish horse farms

BackgroundVirtually all horses are infected with helminth parasites. For some decades, the control of parasites of Swedish horses has been based on routine treatments with anthelmintics, often several times per year. Since anthelmintic resistance is becoming an increasing problem it is essential to develop more sustainable control strategies, which are adapted to different types of horse management. The aim of this study was to obtain information on practices used by Swedish horse owners for the control of endoparasites.MethodsA questionnaire with 26 questions about management practices and parasite control routines was posted to 627 randomly selected horse establishments covering most types of horse management in Sweden.ResultsThe response rate was good in all categories of respondents (66–78%). A total of 444 questionnaires were used in the analyses. It was found that virtually all horses had access to grazing areas, usually permanent. Generally, pasture hygiene was infrequently practiced. Thirty-six percent of the respondents clipped or chain harrowed their pastures, whereas weekly removal of faeces from the grazing areas was performed by 6% of the respondents, and mixed or rotational grazing with other livestock by 10%. The number of anthelmintic treatments per year varied from 1–8 with an average of 3.2. Thirty-eight percent considered late autumn (Oct-Dec) to be the most important time for deworming. This finding, and an increased use of macrocyclic lactones in the autumn, suggests a concern about bot flies, Gasterophilus intestinalis. Only 1% of the respondents stated that faecal egg counts (FEC) were performed on a regular basis. The relatively high cost of FEC analyses compared to purchase of anthelmintics was thought to contribute to the preference of deworming without a previous FEC. From the study it was evident that all categories of horse owners took advice mainly from veterinarians.ConclusionThe results show that routines for endoparasite control can be improved in many horse establishments. To increase the knowledge of equine endoparasite control and follow the recommendations for how to reduce the spread of anthelmintic resistance, a closer collaboration between parasitologists and veterinary practitioners is desirable.

Anthelmintic resistance in New Zealand

Anthelmintic resistance was first confirmed in New Zealand in 1979 and since then has become common-place; more than 50 % of sheep farms now have detectable levels of resistance to one or more chemical classes of anthelmintic. Farmer drenching practices have changed little over the last 15–20 years and are clearly exerting a significant level of selection for resistance. In the absence of new chemical classes of anthelmintics, current parasite control practices will be unsustainable in the long-term. Once substantial resistance has developed, significant reversion to susceptibility is unlikely and re-introduction of failed drugs is likely to result in the rapid re-emergence of control problems. The number of anthelmintic treatments applied is not necessarily a reliable indicator of selection pressure and should not be the only factor considered in strategies for minimising the development of resistance. The relative potential of the different anthelmintics now available, particularly the long- acting products, to select for resistance varies with the way they are used and with other epidemiological and management factors; generalisations about their respective roles in the development of resistance are often unreliable. In many cases, literal extrapolation of recommendations for the management of resistance from Australia to New Zealand is unsupportable, given the differences in climate, parasite ecology and farming practices between the 2 countries. In the absence of a refuge for susceptible genotypes, as occurs when anthelmintic treatments are used as a means of generating low-contamination ‘safe’ pasture for young stock, the rapid development of resistance is likely. Anthelmintic treatments applied to animals with a high level of immunity, or which become immune while the anthelmintic is active, are likely to select for resistance faster than treatments applied to non-immune stock.
