The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Hospital for Diseases of the Throat, Ear and Nose (1886-1947): its formation, rise and demise.

The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Hospital for Diseases of the Throat, Ear and Nose existed in Nottingham for over 60 years, but there is little knowledge or documentation regarding its existence. The following resources were searched to find out more about the hospital: the Nottinghamshire Archives; Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham Libraries; and Nottingham Central Library. Information was also obtained from the founders' relatives. The hospital was founded in 1886, by Dr Donald Stewart, supported by political and clerical leaders. Initially, it treated out-patients only; in-patients were admitted for surgical treatment from 1905. Suitable accommodation was purchased in 1925, on Goldsmith Street, but required much building extension and alteration. Building restrictions during and following World War II prevented expansion. The National Hospital Survey conducted in 1945 considered the clinical work undertaken to be of a minor character, and recommended closure and amalgamation with the services provided by the Nottingham General Hospital. The hospital closed in 1947. The specialist hospital was deemed unfit and unsuitable to compete with the comprehensive service provided by the Nottingham General Hospital.

Robert Tattersall, a Diabetes Physician Ahead of His Time.

The clinical and research landscape in the U.K. was dominated in the 1970s and 1980s by clinician scientists. Many worked as full-time employees of the National Health Service rather than universities. During a period when health services were under less pressure than today, they were able to find sufficient time to design clinical studies to answer important research questions that occurred to them while treating their patients. They also inspired a generation of junior colleagues to join their specialty and become clinical researchers themselves. In many ways it was a golden age for clinical diabetes research in Britain. Clinician scientists within the diabetes field who attained international stature include John Ward and Peter Watkins, who made major advances in diabetic neuropathy; Harry Keen, who pioneered the use of insulin pumps and introduced microalbuminuria as a sensitive test for diabetic nephropathy; and George Alberti (1), who demonstrated how low-dose insulin could be used as a practical and effective treatment for diabetic ketoacidosis. But one individual who epitomized the clinician researcher was Robert Tattersall. His contributions were many and varied and led to improved care worldwide, while the diabetes unit he developed in Nottingham came to be recognized as one of the best in the country. Robert was born in London in July 1943, the only child of Stanley Tattersall and Edith Booth, who were psychiatrists. He was brought up in the grounds of Bucks County Mental Hospital, where his father worked in a senior administrative position. He was educated at Charterhouse School (a private boarding school) and trained in medicine at the University of Cambridge and St Thomas’ Hospital, London. An Unusual Radium Accident

An unusual and disturbing radium accident occurred in September 1949, at the Nottingham General Hospital. During the routine cleaning of a number of needles, an open dish of water in which the needles were being boiled was accidentally allowed to become nearly dry. Amongst the needles were several old ones in which the radium salt is packed directly into the outer platinum sheath. One such container, of 25 mg. content, apparently jumped out of the dish and was recovered after a search on the floor. It was then placed in a lead block with the eyelet protruding. Only after some 30 hours was it further discovered that the point of the needle had disappeared and that practically the whole of the contents of the needle were missing. During this period the room in which the incident occurred had been used routinely by a large number of people.
