Planning and Development of Smart Cities Based on the Concept of Sustainable Development

Based on the idea of sustainable development, this paper explores the planning and development of smart cities. Cities face many issues as global urbanization picks up speed, including environmental pollution, resource depletion, traffic congestion, and social inequality. To address these challenges, the notion of sustainable development has become a guiding principle for many city policymakers, aiming to meet contemporary needs while safeguarding future development. Smart cities utilize advanced information and communication technology to enhance urban operational efficiency, improve resource management, and enhance residents' quality of life, thereby providing a more sustainable development model for cities. This paper focuses on the key areas of smart city planning, including energy utilization and environmental protection, smart transportation and urban mobility, smart city planning and land use, social equity, and community engagement. Using Shenzhen as a case study, the practical application of the notion of sustainable development in smart city construction is elucidated, providing valuable insights and practical references for future smart cities.

Becoming a Leading Player in Protecting the Mountain Environment: The Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme and the Path to the 1982 Kathmandu Declaration

In La Moitié de la Gloire, Axel Mayenfisch’s documentary about the 1952 Swiss expedition to Chomolungma (Mount Everest), André Roch recalls how the retreating climbers simply abandoned much of their gear, either leaving it where it was or “throwing it into holes [crevasses].” Roch’s tale was by no means unusual, as mountaineers at that time gave little thought to what became of their waste. By the 1970s, however, climbers were becoming increasingly aware of their impact on the environment. The resulting change of attitude led many mountaineering organizations to take concrete steps to protect the mountains (e.g., cleanup campaigns) and to issue waste management guidelines for trips into the high mountains. The Union internationale des associations d’alpinisme 1982 Kathmandu Declaration—a charter of ten principles for achieving greater harmony with the mountain environment—was an important milestone in this process. Drawing on documents held in the extensive archives of the Union internationale des associations d’alpinisme, the current paper retraces the path that led to the Kathmandu Declaration and the process by which the environment became an important aspect of the aforementioned organization’s work. It also examines the hypothesis that the organization has progressively adopted a conservationist stance toward protecting nature; its aim is to reconcile environmental protection and economic development (especially tourism). The history of the Kathmandu Declaration supports this hypothesis, as it shows how the notion of sustainable development, which emerged in the 1980s, came to dominate conceptions of mountain protection.

Estimation of energy demand and carbon emissions for the road transport sector: A case study of Douala, Cameroon

Road transport is one of the main causes of air pollution around the world. Nowadays, the notion of sustainable development is one of the major pillars for a healthy environment. However, faced with its major challenges, it is more than necessary and important to understand a set of elements which contribute to better understanding the level of planning for sustainable road transport. This study aims to estimate energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions, namely from road CO2 transport, for the city of Douala in Cameroon from 2010 to 2035. In order to achieve our objective, we used the Long range Energy Alternative Planning (LEAP) model. Based on the LEAP model, the estimates were evaluated based on three scenarios Business As Usual (BAU), Energy Optimization and Mitigation (EOM) and Sustainability Mobility (SM). The aim of this work was to identify suitable potential policies with a view to reducing energy consumption and emissions carbon dioxide (CO2) for road transport in Douala. The results tell us that the EOM and SM scenarios have advantages over the BAU scenario with the SM scenario being more optimistic than the other two scenarios. In addition, the SM scenario has a growth rate of 87.408 % in energy demand smaller than the other two scenarios BAU and EOM respectively 151.598 % and 132.073 %. We also note that the SM scenario contributed to a reduction of 60.661 kilo ton emissions of CO2 less than the BAU scenario. At present, with a view to reducing energy consumption and reducing carbon emissions, road vehicles in circulation in the city of Douala should emphasize structural optimization measures through the use of clean energy by promoting the use of biofuels in mass transport, eliminating old cars and finally considering improving energy efficiency through the implementation of technological development in the automobile sector. Policy makers must take this study into consideration in order to better integrate the notion of energy sustainable road transport.

Promoting Food Security through the Multilateral Trading System: Assessing the WTO’s Efforts, Identifying its Gaps, and Exploring the Way Forward

The Covid-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine have unveiled the vulnerabilities of global food systems, resulting in food shortages, price spikes, and worsening food security. The World Trade Organization can play a key role in addressing these challenges through its developed body of rules. Its regulatory framework on agriculture, however, is affected by shortcomings and asymmetries that pose challenges to the long-term achievement of secure and sustainable food systems. Despite extensive negotiations among countries in the Committee on Agriculture ahead of the 12th Ministerial Conference, few concrete proposals were made to reform trade rules on agriculture. Additionally, the 12th Ministerial Conference itself failed to produce satisfactory results with respect to food security. The ongoing stalemate in agricultural negotiations since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic indicates the need for a new, holistic approach to address food security at the World Trade Organization, particularly in preparation for the upcoming 13th Ministerial Conference in 2024. This approach should be informed by equity considerations and grounded in the notion of sustainable development and the human right to food. While a comprehensive reform of the Agreement on Agriculture informed by this approach is the ultimate goal, it is unlikely to occur in the short- to medium-term due to disagreement among countries on how to reform the three pillars of the Agreement. Therefore, an incremental approach could be adopted by prioritising issues for which short- to medium-term reforms are more likely to garner consensus, such as sustainable agricultural production, and by employing soft law instruments. The latter favour a flexible approach and promote cooperation and trust among countries.

“GREEN FINANCE” IN THE PARADIGM OF SUSTAINABLE BANKING DEVELOPMENT OF THE ECONOMY OF UKRAINE

Introduction. The concept of sustainable development, which has been recognized by the UN and all countries of the world over the past 30-40 years, has become the consensus official paradigm of the world economy in the 21st century. The changed paradigm of the global economy, the foundation of which became the "Goals of sustainable development, the climate agenda and ESG – the transition created a new mega trend of the financial industry – “sustainable finance or finance of new quality”. “Green finance” is considered as a strategic direction of sustainable financing. The purpose of the article is to substantiate theoretical and practical conceptual approaches to the definitions of “green economy” and “green finance” in the new paradigm of the global economy, as well as their use in the sustainable investment development of Ukrainian economy. Results. Key initiatives in the field of sustainable development, as well as conceptual approaches to the definitions of "green economy" and "green finance" are considered. Focused attention on the concept of sustainable finance, the trend of which foresees a revolutionary approach from the classical paradigm of finance to a new paradigm. Financing instruments and mechanisms, such as green bonds, credits and loans, which are not fundamentally new in technical terms, but contain an ecological component, have been analyzed. It is argued that the concept of sustainable development finance acquires both theoretical justification and practical confirmation in the academic discourse. The NBU strategic approaches to the construction and development of sustainable financing, taking into account ESG factors in the European integration vector of Ukraine were studied. Conclusions. It is justified that the paradigm of sustainable finance should be considered in an inextricable relationship with the notions of sustainable development and sustainable investment, which is correlated with the achievement of sustainable development goals. In further scientific research, it is necessary to pay special attention to the key principles of the development of sustainable financing in Ukraine, especially the implementation of environmental, social and managerial (ESG) factors, which will become mandatory elements of the corporate management systems of financial institutions.

Effect of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) and Strategic Deviation on Firm Risk: Evidence from Manufacturing Sector in Emerging Market Asia

The notion of sustainable development has gained widespread acceptance in the realm of social development. As a result, firms and their stakeholders are increasingly focusing on external elements such as environment, society, and governance (ESG). This study investigates the impact of ESG on firm risk measured by cash flow volatility. This study further examines whether strategic deviation moderates the relationship between ESG and firm risk. This research considers a sample of 139 manufacturing firms available in Refinitiv between 2018 and 2022 and applies the fixed-effect model. This study is a valuable contribution to the field of research on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors and their impact on strategic management. Specifically, it examines how ESG considerations and strategic deviation affect the level of risk faced by manufacturing firms. The result shows that ESG significantly reduces cash flow volatility but strategic deviation is insignificant in both affecting cash flow volatility and moderating the relationship of ESG and cash flow volatility. This study will serve as a valuable resource for managers in manufacturing organizations, providing them with insights into the importance of considering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. The findings of this study highlight the impact of ESG and strategic considerations on cash flow volatility.

Sustainability, Distributive Justice, and Law: A Philosophical Inquiry into the Compatibility of Environmental and Social Goals

This essay aims at addressing the legal philosophy’s uptake on whether environmental sustainability can be integrated with distributive justice. After an analysis of the European legal framework, where the notion of sustainable development has been built, concepts such as the veil of ignorance, the capability approach, and human flourishing will be examined, arguing that sustainability and distributive justice are necessarily linked, as mutually reinforcing goals to human development. However, a transformational change is still necessary in the way we think about sustainability, to work towards a direction that should be holistic and inclusive of the needs of both people and the planet.

Youth and climate justice: Representations of young people in action for sustainable futures

AbstractFrom fossil fuel corporations sponsoring climate change education to youth‐washing international gatherings, young people are bombarded, and simultaneously abandoned, by struggles for climate justice. The root issues fuelling interlocking environmental and social crises are often erased in initiatives involving youth. These crises are a direct result of broader, structural conditions that have become the de facto global order and propel notions of sustainable development. In settler colonial contexts such as Canada, colonialism, capitalism and inequitable forms of violence mutually depend upon one another to perpetuate climate injustice. Youth are increasingly aware of these entanglements, while seemingly discouraged from transformative action. With these tensions in mind, this commentary investigates the obstacles youth face despite making key contributions to justice‐focused climate action, and draws attention to the necessity of strengthening meaningful youth engagement. To explore this issue, we engage with climate and environmental justice literature, youth‐led initiatives, and youth representation on a global stage.

The Potential of Cellulolytic Yeast Pichia manshurica UNJCC Y-123, Saccharomyces cerevisiae UNCC Y-84, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae UNJCC Y-83 to Produce Cellulase Enzyme by Using Substrate Skin Delignification of Cocoa (Theobroma cocoa)

Exploring the possibility of using agricultural waste as a substrate for the synthesis of cellulase enzymes for fuel and renewable energy is the main goal of this study, which is in line with the notions of sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The product of delignification of cocoa peel can be used as a substrate for cellulase enzymes producing by yeast isolated from Balinese palm wine. Cellulase enzymes made from yeast from Balinese palm wine can be produced using the delignified cocoa peel as a substrate. This study aims to analyze the cellulase enzyme activity of yeast from Bali's palm wine on delignified cocoa bark substrates. The tests carried out were delignification of cocoa bark (solvent variations: HCl, H2SO4 and NaOH; concentrations: 1, 1.5 and 2 %; biomass 1:15 and 1:20 (w/v)); screening of cellulolytic yeast from Balinese palm wine; molecular identification and morphological characteristics of yeast; and cellulase enzyme activity (variation of yeast isolates and fermentation time of 48, 72 and 96 h). The results of delignification of cocoa shells showed that the use of 1.5 % NaOH solvent with cocoa shell powder biomass of 1:15 (9.59 ± 0.11) significantly differed from the value of reducing sugar content. Based on the screening results of 6 yeast isolates, 3 yeast isolates with the highest cellulolytic index values were selected, namely UNJCC Y-83 (0.29 ± 0.01 mm), UNJCC Y-123 (0.24 ± 0.01 mm) and UNJCC Y-84 (0.23 ± 0.01 mm). For testing cellulase enzyme activity. S. cerevisiae UNJCC Y-83 (4.11 ± 0.41 U/mL); S. cerevisiae UNJCC Y-84 (4.11 ± 0.33 U/mL) and P. manshurica UNJCC Y-123 (4.06 ± 0.12 U/mL) at 96 h of fermentation had significantly different cellulase enzyme activity. The results of identification of yeast rDNA in the D1/D2 region with NL1/NL4 primers obtained the identity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae UNJCC Y-83; Saccharomyces cerevisiae UNJCC Y-84 (99.66 % homology); and Pichia manshurica (100 % homology). Theobroma cocoa rind can be used as a yeast substrate to produce cellulase enzymes for fuel and renewable energy. HIGHLIGHTS Screening of 6 yeast isolates, 3 yeast isolates with the highest cellulolytic index values were selected, namely UNJCC Y-83 (0.29 ± 0.01 mm), UNJCC Y-123 (0.24 ± 0.01 mm) and UNJCC Y-84 (0.23 ± 0.01 mm) for testing molecular identification and cellulase enzyme activity The result of rDNA sequence analysis in the D1/D2 region showed that the yeast isolates UNJCC Y-83 and UNJCC Y-84 had a homology level of 99.66 % as Saccharomyces cerevisiae with a bootstrap value of 92 %. This study examines the notion of sustainable development in corporate organizations and argues that businesses’ adoption of systems/standards to support their sustainable development practices improves employee health andwell-being in significant ways. Additionally, the paper analyses the effect of continual or progressive stress that employees face due to their job obligations, circumstances, surroundings, or other workplace pressures and how this affects the organization’s sustainability. Given the growing importance of occupational stress due to technological innovations and global economic progress, it has developed into a worldwide sustainability concern, affecting professionals and all types of employees. Additionally, this study proposes a framework for implementing an integrated management systems (IMS) approach centered on the iterative implementation of sustainable development practices to promote employee health and well-being and minimize workplace demands. Further, the significance of studies exploring the relationship between a company’s sustainable development policies, its employees’ health, and well-being are explored, and future research direction was discussed.

Nexus of financial management, blockchain, and natural resources: Comparing the impact on environmental sustainability and resource productivity

In recent years, with a rise in climate change, the notion of sustainable development and resource productivity has received a lot of attention around the world. Meanwhile, advances in artificial intelligence based financial management and the creation of new blockchains or cryptocurrencies have transformed the day-to-day operations of economic actors. The aim of the present study is to investigate the impact of financial management and blockchains on environmental sustainability and resource productivity. The monthly time series data of the United States of America economy data is used covering the period from 2000M01–2022M09. Firstly, the stationary variable is tested using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller and Phillips-Perron tests. The findings reveal that all the variables follow I(1). The long-term estimations are investigated through the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares. The findings reveal that artificial intelligence-based financial management helps to improve environmental sustainability and resource productivity by reducing carbon emissions and increasing combustible and renewable waste, metals, and non-metallic minerals resources in the long run. In addition, blockchain technology appears to be a booster for environmental unsustainability while also reducing metallic resources. These findings are particularly important and critical since they indicate the path to achieving Sustainable Development Goals. Overall, the findings imply that the United States of America authorities should continue to push AI-based sustainability models and move to green blockchains in order to mitigate the negative environmental effects of blockchains.

The Concept of a Holistic Development Constitution in Light of Plato’s Theory of Gradual State Decline

Today, society faces a number of challenges driven by excessive consumption and extreme proliferation of utilitarian and radical individualistic ideals. This study is focused on searching for new constitutional models that would mitigate social and environmental risks of the consumerist era. To this end, the author has conducted a comprehensive review of relevant Ancient Greek concepts. In the 5th and 4th centuries BC, Greece put forward the first abstract notions of the ideal and material realms, as well as of individualism and collectivism. Particular attention is given to Plato’s theory of inevitable constitutional decline, its causes and potential solutions. Re-examining the classical holistic methodology — where the whole is larger than the sum of its parts — now seems as essential as ever before. Although such an approach is foreign to contemporary world steeped in division and individual’s alienation from nature, society and other individuals, classical holistic principles remain quite relevant, as they are largely aligned with the 20th century notion of sustainable development, which sees economic, social and environmental challenges as intrinsically linked, without dividing them into separate realms. Due to this perspective, the author has been able to come up with a general normative framework that also takes the fields of ethic and aesthetic — separate, but linked by a complex interrelation system — into account.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Commercially Developed Appraisal Instruments (CDAIs) Using Composite Indices to Assess, Compare, and Rank the Liveability, Quality of Living and Sustainability Performance of Cities and Communities

This manuscript presents an analysis of commercially developed appraisal instruments (CDAIs) using composite indices to assess, compare and rank the sustainability performance of cities and communities. A group of CDAIs using composite indices are commonly used to assess, compare, and rank the sustainability performance of cities and communities. As a sustainability assessment methodology, composite indices gather qualitative and quantitative information which is then used to calculate the overall performance of the principle (e.g., sustainability); the stand-alone number, commonly known as an index, is often used to compare and rank performance. Because of practicality and mistakenly perceived simplicity, the assessment methodology is often misunderstood and underestimated. Issues, skepticism, and criticism surrounding composite indices are rooted in the lack of structured and transparent methodological frameworks for the identification and selection of elements within each hierarchical level. Although scientifically-based methodologies and processes have been developed to assign relevance (i.e., weighting) and aggregate performance to calculate the stand-alone index, the effectiveness of the assessment methodology (i.e., composite indices) is still influenced by various degrees and types of subjectivity and uncertainty. To evaluate their effectiveness, the manuscript discusses three characteristics of CDAIs using composite indices: (1) the hierarchical structural organization (HSO) considers the aim of each hierarchical level in the assessment process, (2) the identification, selection and design of the elements (e.g., principle, sub-principles, criteria, indicators) included in each hierarchical level as a determinant factor in capturing the various facets of the sustainable development notion, and (3) the quantification methodology (i.e., weighting and aggregation system [W&AS]) implemented by the developer or proponent of the assessment tool. The analysis of CDAIs using composite indices effectiveness is partially assisted by three frameworks designed by consensus (FDC): (1) ISO 37130:2018 Sustainable development of communities—Indicators for city services and quality of life which is complemented with ISO 37122:2019 Sustainable cities and communities—Indicators for smart cities and ISO 37123:2019 Sustainable cities and communities—Indicators for resilient cities, (2) United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) with emphasis on Goal 11, and (3) customized frameworks for sustainable cities (CFSS) with a focus on sustainability plans designed and implemented by the cities of Vancouver and Montreal which are used as case studies. While the findings support the applicability and usefulness of CDAIs using composite indices as assessment methodology, the appropriateness of comparing and ranking the sustainability performance of cities and communities is an unsettled debate with several areas for improvement and future research.

Sustainable Development for Oil and Gas Infrastructure from Risk, Reliability, and Resilience Perspectives

The oil and gas (O&G) sector is a critical energy infrastructure to a Nation’s welfare. As developed as the O&G industry may seem, its aging infrastructure gradually shows numerous challenges to keep up with the growing energy demand, increasing operation costs, and environmental concerns. A robust O&G infrastructure that is risk-free, reliable, and resilient towards expected or unexpected threats can offer an uninterrupted supply of O&G to downstream stakeholders, competitive prices to customers, and better environmental footprints. With the shift towards renewable energy, the notion of sustainable development should be firmly embedded in O&G infrastructure and operations to facilitate the smooth transition towards future renewable energy generation. This paper offers a comprehensive and innovative approach to achieving sustainable development for O&G infrastructure by examining it from a holistic risk, reliability, and resilience (3Rs) perspective. The role of each individual concept and their collective influence on sustainable development in the O&G industry will be thoroughly discussed. Moreover, this paper will highlight the significant impact of the holistic 3Rs approach on sustainable development and propose future research directions. Given the complexity of O&G infrastructure, it is crucial to incorporate sustainable development practices into every dimension of the O&G infrastructure, iteratively and continuously, to achieve the ultimate goal of long-term sustainability. This paper makes a significant contribution to the field by providing valuable insights and recommendations for achieving sustainable development in the O&G industry.

Caribbean Eco-fictions: Multilayered Stories of the Haitian Environment

Abstract: The duty of care for the nation’s threatened environment, for which the forest and its inhabitants stand as potent symbols, has been at the center of Haitian fiction, as well as of fiction by other Caribbean writers who have set their work in Haiti. The Haitian novel has mourned the impacts of deforestation on both human and nonhuman communities and denounced the practices that have led to catastrophic deforestation and the concomitant biodiversity losses, offering in turn new approaches and potential remedies for addressing one of the nation’s most central problems. The Haitian novel has counseled, above all, political action against extractivist practices and misguided environmental management and conservation measures, portraying the state’s inaction as conducive to the slow violence of environmental neglect. Above all, the Haitian novel has relied on the ecological principles of Vodou, particularly its deep connection to nature, as a foundational source for notions of sustainable development, landscape restoration, and multispecies justice.

Model Arctic Council for sustainable development

ABSTRACT I argue that Model Arctic Council (MAC) has a role to play in Arctic sustainable development. Like the better-known Model United Nations (MUN), MAC is a form of simulation pedagogy, an experiential learning process in which secondary-school pupils or university students comprehend the nature and importance of complex issues such as sustainable development by imagining themselves as diplomats trying to negotiate a common approach to them. After demonstrating the educational value of diplomatic simulations in general, I introduce MUN as its most popular form, and I assess a case-study of a global MUN program designed to advance knowledge and action among youth in respect of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This case-study, taken together with the structure, subject-matter and educational value of MAC itself, strongly suggests that MAC can be used to advance knowledge and action among both Arctic and non-Arctic youth in respect of Arctic sustainable development, including understanding how the notion of sustainable development is both contested in general and contextualized in the Arctic. Combining this analysis with professional experience, I offer practical recommendations to educators about the effective design and use of MAC and other simulation pedagogies.

Progress in photocatalytic CO2 reduction based on single-atom catalysts.

Reduced CO2 emissions, conversion, and reuse are critical steps toward carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. Converting CO2 into high-value carbon-containing compounds or fuels may effectively address the energy shortage and environmental issues, which is consistent with the notion of sustainable development. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction processes have become one of the research focuses, where single-atom catalysts have demonstrated significant benefits owing to their excellent percentage of atom utilization. However, among the crucial challenges confronting contemporary research is the production of efficient, low-cost, and durable photocatalysts. In this paper, we offer a comprehensive overview of the study growth on single-atom catalysts for photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions, describe several techniques for preparing single-atom catalysts, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of single-atom catalysts and present the study findings of three single-atom photocatalysts with TiO2, g-C3N4 and MOFs materials as carriers based on the interaction between single atoms and carriers, and finally provide an outlook on the innovation of photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions.

Decube Framework: An Introduction to a New Energy Modelling and Planning Process for Sustainable Utilisation of Pakistan’s Energy Resources

Sustainable Development—which ensures that the use of resources and the environment today does not restrict their use by future generations [UNEP (2007)]—is the most significant challenge facing today’s governments. Consequently, the notion of Sustainable Development [Matthews (1979)] has become a fundamental part of any policy and decision carried out at national and international levels. If the current acceleration of human advancement is not reduced it poses the biggest threat to long term sustainability of the entire globe, arising from the development and industrialisation in the twenty-first century, dwarfing the impact of twentieth century. This further compounds the work of policy-makers faced with the challenge of fast tracking the economies of developing countries. Since the Industrial Revolution energy has become the lifeline of economic development and progress. This led to exponential increase in use of fossil fuels. However, rampant, unchecked and accelerated burning of fossil fuels in the twentieth century has resulted disastrous and long term damaging effects to earth’s climate. Consequently, world has begun this century with the aim “to develop a coherent and practical approach to climate change [World Energy Council (2007)].” “Safe, environmentally sound and economically viable energy pathway that will sustain human progress into the distant future is clearly imperative [WCEW (1987)]” to achieve the above goal. As a result environment has become an integral part of any energy system and policy. On the whole today’s energy policies and decisions have to be carefully woven into an intricate web traversing the boundaries of economy, environment and society.

PROMOTING AN INCLUSIVE ECONOMY: THE RELEVANCE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ISLAMICITY PROSPERITY INDEX

Inequalities and social exclusion are the consequences of imbalanced economic growth, prompting the World Bank to establish new targets for eradicating extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity. Surprisingly, the contemporary solution methods are consistent with Shari'ah's objectives. Stressing the importance of balanced growth, this study aims to quantify prosperity sharing in 28 developed and 14 developing nations by reshaping the notion of sustainable development from an Islamic perspective. The study examins four pillars of prosperity namely Faradh (social responsibility), Shura (social participation), Al Adl Wal Ihsan (social equilibrium) and Ummah (social cohesion) to capture the essence of prosperity sharing. It begins with a thorough literature review as the basis for designing and developing the dimensions and indicators, followed by an adequacy test of the indicators using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Then, the study employs panel data regression analysis to identify the determinants that have a significant impact on the shared prosperity indicator (s). The results show that all of the pillars (Faradh, Shura, Al Adl Wal Ihsan, and Ummah) have a significant outcome, confirming that the strength of the association between the variables is strong and adequate as proxies for each pillar. Finally, an Islamicity Prosperity Index is developed, which is a multidimensional index (iPI) to measure prosperity sharing in developed and developing countries.

Sustainable Development and the Critical Role of HRM

Abstract The link between sustainable development and human resource management (HRM) has been only recently widely established in the literature. Systematic studies are available but there is a wide range of interpretations and several overlapping terms that often cause confusion to practitioners. HRM practices included in the CSR Programs of a company are often linked with sustainability, business ethics and workplace justice and are often under the terms of sustainable HRM. It is well recognized that HR can play a critical role in enhancing corporate sustainability through policies and practices that benefit its people and society in general and that all these initiatives must be documented and reported to gain visibility and credibility. Lately great emphasis has been placed on the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the dimensions of the Environment, Society and Governance (ESG) which form the criteria for documenting and reporting relevant practices implemented by business firms. HRM can play an important role in designing and implementing such practices, especially those linked to society. This paper presents the notion of Sustainable Development, its increasing importance for companies and its link with Human Resource Management. (HRM). It describes and clarifies Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), their history and the three pillars e.g., Environment, Society and Governance (ESG) which form the basic criteria for organizations to implement and report relevant practices in order to prove their involvement in sustainability. Third, the paper presents the concept of Sustainable HRM, and Sustainable practices implemented by companies in Greece following the 2010 economic crisis and the need for reporting them mainly under the social dimension of the ESG Criteria. To stress the need for the involvement of HRM in sustainability in order to enhance its ethical profile, expand its agenda and improve its role as a strategic partner and a source of competitive advantage.
