A study on the pathways and their interannual variability of the Fukushima-derived tracers in the northwestern Pacific

This study investigates that the subsurface pathways, travel time, and its interannual variability of Fukushima-derived tracers subducted with the North Pacific subtropical mode water (NPSTMW) using 22-year-long (1994–2015) eddy-resolving (1/12°) and eddy-permitting (1/4°) ocean reanalysis. The NPSTMW is a thick subsurface layer with low potential vorticity and relatively uniform potential density, making it a key indicator of the North Pacific oceanic conditions. A series of Lagrangian particle tracking simulations quantitatively revealed that the Fukushima-derived particles moved along the Kuroshio Extension (KE) and spread over the majority of the subtropical region in the northwestern Pacific within 4–5 years. Approximately 36% of the particles flowed eastward in the Kuroshio-Oyashio transition zone (KO) and thereafter re-emerged to the sea surface at the remote area (near dateline), and 30% of particles moved along the KE. The remaining 34% subducted into NPSTMW layer and then widely spread out to the subtropical region along the re-circulation gyre (RG), exhibiting a subsurface pathway during entire particle tracking. When the particles were released, their pathway was immediately determined, whether it flowed along the KO (>36°N), KE (30°–36°N), or RG (<30°N). Furthermore, the interannual variability of the pathways was significantly associated with the dynamic states of KE, such as the path length of the Kuroshio jet. This result implies that understanding the subsurface dynamics and its variability of the KE and NPSTMW is crucial for predicting the dispersion of radioactive materials in the subsurface layer and its potential impact.

Intrathermocline eddies observed in the northwestern subtropical Pacific Ocean

Two anticyclonic intrathermocline eddies (ITEs) were detected by an underwater glider in the northwestern subtropical Pacific Ocean during August-October 2019. They both exhibited a lens-shaped vertical structure within the thermocline with their cores located at ~170 m. The North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water (STMW) was found within the cores of these two ITEs. The lens-shaped structure of ITE1 observed by the glider was very clear since the glider seemed to have moved into its core during the observation. Further analysis reveals that ITE1 displayed no signals at the sea surface and lasted for about 20 days (26 August-14 September 2019). ITE1 was locally formed and the water inside it was a mixture of local water and the water in the northern adjacent area. The low-salinity water at 0-50 m from the northern adjacent area extended southwestward and mixed with the local water. As a result, the local salinity-forced restratification caused a potential vorticity (PV) decrease in the subsurface and finally resulted in the generation of ITE1. The baroclinic instability at 50-170 m may be the main energy source for ITE1 generation. On the other hand, the lens-shaped structure of ITE2 observed by the glider was less prominent since the glider did not move into its core. Further analysis reveals that the lens-shaped structure of ITE2 was also very clear near its core and ITE2 displayed clear signals at the surface as an anticyclonic eddy (AE2). AE2/ITE2 was remotely generated within the main formation region of STMW and then moved southwestward. The low PV STMW was trapped in AE2 and a lens-shaped structure developed in the subsurface. Subduction of the STMW caused the generation of ITE2.

Impact of Increased Horizontal Resolution of an Ocean Model on Carbon Circulation in the North Pacific Ocean

AbstractThe impact of resolving western boundary currents and mesoscale eddies on a carbon circulation simulation for the North Pacific Ocean is investigated to evaluate the merits of using high‐resolution ocean biogeochemical models for climate projections. Simulations by a 100‐km resolution global ocean biogeochemical model with and without embedding a 10‐km resolution model in the North Pacific Ocean are compared. The major improvement in the high‐resolution simulation is the representation of the Kuroshio, its extension current, and the recirculation gyres formed to its south and north, resulting in a proper representation of the North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW) and an increase in storage of the anthropogenic CO2 (Canth) in STMW by about two‐thirds. The larger storage rate in STMW is caused by supply of a larger amount of warm surface water containing rich Canth to the formation region by the intensified Kuroshio. A huge buoyancy loss from this warm water results in the increased formation of STMW that occupies a vast area in the western subtropical gyre. The surface uptake of Canth in the formation region of STMW is slightly increased but is largely comparable to that of the low‐resolution model. Moreover, there is no structural difference in Canth uptake in other parts of the subtropical region. Thus, the improvement of Canth distribution can be understood as a redistribution of water mass in the subtropical gyre by the improved circulation. The present assessment motivates the use of a high horizontal resolution ocean model in next‐generation projection experiments with carbon cycles.

Effects of Eddies on the Formation and Subduction of North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water Based on Argo Observations

AbstractNorth Pacific subtropical mode water (NPSTMW) is formed in the winter deep mixed layer (ML), due to ocean‐to‐atmosphere interactions, south of the Kuroshio Extension (KE), one of the most energetic eddy activity regions. The large‐scale effects of eddies on the formation and subduction of NPSTMW are investigated on updated Argo observations via kinematic and thermodynamic parameterization approaches. The climatological annual mean eddy‐induced subduction of NPSTMW can reach 4.51 Sv, which accounts for nearly 56% of the total subduction. The local enhancement of the eddy‐induced subduction rate can reach 90 m yr−1 in the high eddy kinetic energy (EKE) zone. Moreover, the spatial distributions of the large eddy‐induced subduction are mostly generated in a zone of steep isopycnals near the KE front area via the parameterization. The diagnosis of the thermodynamic relationship indicates that the eddy‐induced buoyancy flux broadens the area of ocean surface buoyancy loss and then fosters the formation of NPSTMW in winter. The eddy‐induced buoyancy loss due to diapycnal mixing is likely to occur in the relatively steep isopycnals near the KE region, which accounts for 21.2% of the net NPSTMW formation. The contribution of eddy‐induced subduction has the same order as that of lateral induction in each year. The eddy‐induced subduction and lateral induction show similar interannual variations related to the KE variable state.

A relay of anticyclonic eddies transferring North Pacific subtropical mode water into the South China Sea

North Pacific subtropical mode waters (STMWs), which are subducted with air-sea interaction signals and characterized by low potential vorticity (PV), play an important role in climate change issues. STMW (PV<2×10−10 m−1· s−1) can be advected westward by large-scale ocean circulation and mesoscale eddies. However, whether and how the STMW intrudes into the South China Sea (SCS) remains unclear. Low PV signals that originate from the STMW and intruding into the SCS are investigated by comparing observations and ocean general circulation models during 2003-2017. These signals mostly move across the Luzon Strait (LS) into the SCS during the 2008-2009 and 2014-2016 periods. The results of case studies selected from these two periods indicate that the low PV signals can move to the LS and are trapped by anticyclonic eddies (AEs). When the velocity vorticity is negative southwest of Taiwan Island, vertical stratification becomes weaker west of the coming AE (AE1), and low PV signals can consequently be transported along the STMW layer (25.0 σθ- 25.5 σθ isopycnal layer). Thus, an AE (AE2) forms east of AE1 and isolates the low PV signal from AE1, and then AE2 transports the low PV water southwestward in the SCS. In contrast, the low PV signal has difficulty migrating eastward when the velocity vorticity is positive west of AE1, as vertical stratification strengthens and then weakens that signal. The results suggest that only AEs can relay low PV signals from east of the LS and carry them over long distances in the SCS.

Influence of North Pacific subtropical mode water variability on the surface mixed layer through the heaving of the upper thermocline on decadal timescales

Decadal variability of the North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW) and its influence on the upper thermocline and mixed layer are examined in a four-dimensional variational ocean re-analysis for the Western North Pacific over 30 years (FORA–WNP30). The STMW that forms south of the Kuroshio Extension becomes thick/cold and thin/warm on decadal timescales. These variations are subducted and advected to the south, where thick (thin) STMW causes the upper thermocline to heave up (down) above the STMW, producing cold (warm) temperature anomalies at subsurface depths, with especially large anomalies at the depths of the seasonal thermocline. Temperature anomalies also appear in the mixed layer from March to November, except in September. These anomalies have the same sign as the temperature anomalies of the STMW, although they are due not to the reemergence of the STMW at the surface but to the heaving of the upper thermocline. In the FORA–WNP30, because the formation of the mixed layer temperature anomalies owes much to the increment introduced by data assimilation, the mechanism remains unclear. A heat budget analysis of the mixed layer, however, suggests the importance of entrainment and/or vertical diffusion at the base of the mixed layer for conveying temperature anomalies from the upper thermocline to the mixed layer. The STMW also affects the mixed layer depth. A thick (thin) STMW shoals (deepens) the seasonal thermocline, enhancing (weakening) stratification at depths below the mixed layer and thus hindering (favoring) mixed layer development from July to September.

Cold- versus warm-season-forced variability of the Kuroshio and North Pacific subtropical mode water

The ocean responds to atmospheric variations. Changes in sea surface winds, surface air temperature, and surface air humidity cause upper ocean variability by modulating air-sea momentum and heat exchanges. Upper ocean variability in the mid-latitudes on inter-annual and longer timescales has previously been considered to be attributable to atmospheric variations in the cold season, because atmospheric forcing is stronger in the cold season than in the warm season. However, this idea has not been sufficiently confirmed yet. Although the ocean model is a useful tool to evaluate the impact of the atmospheric forcing in each season, there are no past studies having examined ocean model responses respectively to the cold- and warm-season atmospheric forcing. In this study, we performed numerical experiments with an eddy-resolving ocean general circulation model and investigated oceanic responses to cold- and warm-season atmospheric forcing, focusing on the Kuroshio and North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW) in the western mid-latitude North Pacific. We found that temporal variations of net Kuroshio transport and STMW distribution/temperature are dominantly controlled by atmospheric forcing in the cold season. These results suggest that cold-season atmospheric variations are key to obtaining insights into large-scale upper ocean variability in the North Pacific subtropical gyre.

Accelerated Accumulation of Anthropogenic CO2 Drives Rapid Acidification in the North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water During 1993–2020

AbstractRecent studies suggest that the formation and motion of the North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW) play an important role in oceanic uptake, transport and storage of anthropogenic CO2 (CANT). However, the variability of STMW acidification rate and its control mechanisms remain unclear. Here we show that the STMW acidification rate during 2005–2020 is about two times of that during 1993–2005, which is due to the cooling‐driven enhanced CANT accumulation in the formation waters in the recent period. The rapid rates of CANT accumulation and acidification are consistently observed in the entire region across 137°–149°E regulated by STMW transport. Moreover, the tracer‐based (Δ14C and δ13C) analyses also indicate that the accelerated accumulation of CANT could be traced back to the surface formation waters via STMW formation. The vertical and horizontal consistencies imply the memory function of mode waters in retaining the anthropogenic carbon fingerprint during its formation and transport.

Impingement of Subsurface Anticyclonic Eddies on the Kuroshio Mainstream East of Taiwan

AbstractThis study shows that North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW) characterized by low potential vorticity can approach and impinge on the Kuroshio mainstream east of Taiwan. The results of the analyses of observations and output from eddy‐resolving models show that the STMW appears with the frequency of 32.1% and 19.9% in the Kuroshio east of Taiwan. A case study with the output of the ocean general circulation model for the earth simulator during October 2015–March 2016 indicates that mode water moves southwestward toward the Kuroshio in accordance with a vertically lens‐shaped subsurface anticyclonic eddy (SAE). After the shoreward edge of the SAE impinges on the offshore edge of the Kuroshio, the northward velocity, especially subsurface velocity, of the Kuroshio increases significantly in the subsurface layer and the Kuroshio central position (KCP) extends eastward. While the SAE moves and dissipates, the offshore edge of the Kuroshio moves inshore, and then transport decreases. Both the northward velocity and the KCP changes result in the Kuroshio transport change during the impingement of SAE in the case. Statistic analysis further demonstrate that eddies those can trap moving STMW are dominated by SAEs. When SAEs encounter the Kuroshio, their subsurface northward velocity increases by 67.8% and the KCP moves eastward, and thus the northward transport of the Kuroshio increases by 43.4%.

Multidecadal Regime Shifts in North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water Formation in a Coupled Atmosphere‐Ocean‐Sea Ice Model

AbstractA regime shift in the formation mechanisms of the North Pacific subtropical mode water (NPSTMW) and its causes were investigated using a 2,000‐year‐long pre‐industrial control simulation of a fully coupled atmosphere‐ocean‐sea ice model. The volume budget analysis revealed that the air‐sea flux and ocean dynamics (OD) were the two primary driving mechanisms for NPSTMW formation, but their relative importance has periodically alternated in multidecadal timescales of approximately 50–70 years. The regime shift of the NPSTMW formation was closely related to the meridional (50 years) and zonal (70 years) movements of the Aleutian Low (AL). When AL shifted to the south or east, it induces the sea surface height anomalies propagating westward from the central North Pacific and preconditions the NPSTMW formation, thus the OD become relatively more important.

Impact of the reemergence of North Pacific subtropical mode water on the multi-year modulation of marine heatwaves in the North Pacific Ocean during winter and early spring

Marine heatwaves (MHWs), which are characterized by extremely warm water, can harm the marine ecosystem and fishing industry; improving the prediction of such events could reduce their harmful impact. In this study, we examined MHWs occurring in the North Pacific in winter/early spring, and their relationship with North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW), based on the data analysis and numerical experiments. The time-lagged correlation between the cumulative intensity of MHWs and volume of STMW in March of each year suggests that STMW can modulate MHWs for up to three years after its formation. A patch of statistically significant negative correlation initially appeared in the formation region of the STMW but was found to the east of it near the Transition Zone Chlorophyll Front (TZCF) after one year. This patch stagnated near this remote site in the second winter and early spring. Passive tracer experiments using a numerical model indicate that the STMW, formed near the Kuroshio Extension in March, moves to the east underneath the mixed layer and is entrained to the surface in the following winter while altering the properties of STMW. The STMW reemerges in the second winter, after stagnating under the mixed layer near the TZCF. This suggests that the reemergence of STMW can suppress MHWs in the North Pacific during winter and early spring by reducing the sea surface temperature; if the volume of STMW is anomalously low, there is a greater likelihood of the occurrence of MHWs near the TZCF in the following two winters and early springs. Our results indicate that understanding STMW formation is crucial for predicting MHWs in the North Pacific Ocean during winter and early spring.

Subtropical Mode Water in a recent persisting Kuroshio large-meander period: part I\u2014formation and advection over the entire distribution region

Since August 2017, the Kuroshio has taken a large-meander (LM) path, which has forced the Kuroshio extension (KE) to be in its stable state against its wind-forced decadal variability. How such current conditions have impacted the formation and advection of North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW) over its distribution region was examined using Argo float data during 2005–2020. Out of the whole STMW defined as a low-potential vorticity layer of 16–19.5 ºC, a relatively cold variety of 16–18 ºC, which was formed south of the KE and advected westward and southward, occupied more than 80% of the total volume. The formation rate of the 16–18 ºC variety was low during 2006–2009 in an unstable-KE period and high during 2010–2015 in a stable-KE period, and then dropped drastically in 2016 despite the KE still being in the stable state. After a short unstable-KE period in 2016–2017, the LM-forced, stable-KE period began, but the formation rate of the 16–18 ºC variety has not restored, possibly due to stronger background stratification propagated from the central North Pacific. In addition, the 16–18 ºC variety has had to make a southern detour around the LM, and its westward advection from the formation region south of the KE to the region south of Japan has been significantly decreased, possibly because it is dissipated more strongly over a southern part of the Izu–Ogasawara Ridge. Due to such decline in the formation and advection, the volume of the 16–18 ºC variety and hence that of the whole STMW have gradually decreased since 2016.

Poleward Shift of the Kuroshio Extension Front and Its Impact on the North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water in the Recent Decades

AbstractThe meridional shift of the Kuroshio Extension (KE) front and changes in the formation of the North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water (STMW) during 1979–2018 are reported. The surface-to-subsurface structure of the KE front averaged over 142°–165°E has shifted poleward at a rate of ~0.23° ± 0.16° decade−1. The shift was caused mainly by the poleward shift of the downstream KE front (153°–165°E, ~0.41° ± 0.29° decade−1) and barely by the upstream KE front (142°–153°E). The long-term shift trend of the KE front showed two distinct behaviors before and after 2002. Before 2002, the surface KE front moved northward with a faster rate than the subsurface. After 2002, the surface KE front showed no obvious trend, but the subsurface KE front continued to move northward. The ventilation zone of the STMW, defined by the area between the 16° and 18°C isotherms or between the 25 and 25.5 kg m−3 isopycnals, contracted and displaced northward with a shoaling of the mixed layer depth hm before 2002 when the KE front moved northward. The STMW subduction rate was reduced by 0.76 Sv (63%; 1 Sv ≡ = 106 m3 s−1) during 1979–2018, most of which occurred before 2002. Of the three components affecting the total subduction rate, the temporal induction (−∂hm/∂t) was dominant accounting for 91% of the rate reduction, while the vertical pumping (−wmb) amounted to 8% and the lateral induction (−umb ⋅ ∇hm) was insignificant. The reduced temporal induction was attributed to both the contracted ventilation zone and the shallowed hm that were incurred by the poleward shift of KE front.

Decadal-scale variability of the North Pacific subtropical mode water and its influence on the pycnocline observed along 137\xb0E

Decadal-scale variability of the North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW) and its influence on the pycnocline are examined by analyzing Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) repeat hydrographic observations along the 137°E meridian from 1972 to 2019, with a particular focus on the summer season when the seasonal upper pycnocline develops above the STMW. The STMW appears between 20° and 32°N at 137°E, with the thickness varying on decadal timescales of approximately 9–15 years. Argo float observations suggest that the observed change in the STMW thickness originates in the wintertime mixed layer south of the Kuroshio Extension in the preceding year. The STMW has a substantial impact on the pycnocline. The presence of thick STMW shoals the upper pycnocline, occasionally concurrent with the deepening of the lower main pycnocline. The change is robust in the upper pycnocline, where the heaving of isopycnal surfaces occurs with density anomalies up near the surface. The subtropical front (STF) at subsurface depths, which is associated with a northward shoaling of the upper pycnocline and is maintained by the STMW in the climatology, also changes on decadal timescales. A thick STMW increases the northward shoaling of the upper pycnocline and intensifies the STF. On decadal timescales, the STF variations are accounted for by the STMW-induced change in the upper pycnocline slope. The change in the STF due to mode waters is consistent with previous findings from numerical models.

Decadal to Multidecadal Variability of the Mixed Layer to the South of the Kuroshio Extension Region

AbstractThe decadal to multidecadal mixed layer variability is investigated in a region south of the Kuroshio Extension (130°E–180°, 25°–35°N), an area where the North Pacific subtropical mode water forms, during 1948–2012. By analyzing the mixed layer heat budget with different observational and reanalysis data, here we show that the decadal to multidecadal variability of the mixed layer temperature and mixed layer depth is covaried with the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO), instead of the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO). The mixed layer temperature has strong decadal to multidecadal variability, being warm before 1970 and after 1990 (AMO positive phase) and cold during 1970–90 (AMO negative phase), and so does the mixed layer depth. The dominant process for the mixed layer temperature decadal to multidecadal variability is the Ekman advection, which is controlled by the zonal wind changes related to the AMO. The net heat flux into the ocean surface Qnet acts as a damping term and it is mainly from the effect of latent heat flux and partially from sensible heat flux. While the wind as well as mixed layer temperature decadal changes related to the PDO are weak in the western Pacific Ocean. Our finding proposes the possible influence of the AMO on the northwestern Pacific Ocean mixed layer variability, and could be a potential predictor for the decadal to multidecadal climate variability in the western Pacific Ocean.

North Pacific subtropical mode water is controlled by the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability

North Pacific subtropical mode water, a vertically homogeneous thermocline water mass, occupies the entire subtropical Western Pacific Ocean. It transports mass, heat and nutrients from the surface to the subsurface ocean, providing memory of climate variability1–11. Decadal variability of the mode water temperature has been attributed to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO)2,3,12,13, but this is based on short data records. Here, using long records of observations, we show that decadal-to-multidecadal variability of the mode water mean temperature is instead controlled by the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV). During an AMV-positive phase, warm sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the North Atlantic Ocean weaken the subtropical North Pacific westerlies; the associated anomalous easterlies in the subtropical west Pacific4,5 drive a northward Ekman transport of warm water to the mode water formation area. Subduction of the warm water increases mode water temperature, influencing Northwestern Pacific upper ocean heat content and fish catches. A long pre-industrial model simulation with multiple AMV cycles and a pacemaker experiment support this mechanism—the AMV forcing alone can drive decadal variability of the mode water. Thus, the AMV provides important memory for prediction of decadal climate and ecosystem variability in the Pacific Ocean. North Pacific mode water controls extratropical-to-tropical heat and mass exchange. Analysis and model simulations show that decadal temperature variations in this subtropical North West Pacific water mass are forced remotely by Atlantic Multidecadal Variability.

Late‐1980s Regime Shift in the Formation of the North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water

AbstractThe formation mechanism as well as its temporal change of the North Pacific subtropical mode water (NPSTMW) is investigated using a 50‐year (1960–2009) ocean general circulation model hindcast. The volume budget analysis suggests that the formation of the NPSTMW is mainly controlled by the air‐sea interaction and ocean dynamics, but there is a regime shift of the relative importance between the two around late‐1980s. While the local air‐sea interaction process is a main driver of the NPSTMW formation prior to late‐1980s, ocean dynamics including the vertical entrainment become dominant since then. The NPSTMW formation is affected by the North Pacific Oscillation simultaneously in the early period, but with a few years lag in the later period. The interdecadal change of the driving mechanism of the interannual variability of the NPSTMW is probably due to the stronger (weaker) influence of local atmospheric forcing in the western North Pacific and unfavorable (favorable) wind stress curl condition for the remote oceanic forcing from the central North Pacific during the former (later) period. This regime shift may be related to the change of centers of the actions of the wind stress curl since the late‐1980s.

Effects of Anticyclonic Eddies on the Multicore Structure of the North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water Based on Argo Observations

AbstractThe North Pacific subtropical mode water (STMW) often displays a “multicore structure” with more than one minimum in the vertical potential vorticity profile. Anticyclonic eddies (AEs) play an important role in STMW formation and transport, but their effect on the multicore structure of the STMW has not been fully studied. Here, we investigated the formation and evolution of STMW multicore structures in AEs using Argo profiles, which followed two AEs in the STMW formation region for approximately 1.5 years from 2013 to 2015. We found that after the two AEs formed east of 150°E, they trapped the local cold and dense STMW and migrated westward. Since sea surface temperatures increased toward the west, warmer and lighter STMWs were formed during the winter ventilation process as the two AEs moved westward. The newly formed STMW rode on the preexisting cold and dense STMW inside the eddy core, forming a multicore structure in the STMW. Given that water mass properties within AEs are much more conservative, the multicore structure of STMW is much more easily formed inside AEs than outside of eddies. There was a larger (smaller) proportion of profiles containing multiple STMW cores inside (outside) the AE cores, indicating that the AEs were “hot spots” for developing the multicore structure of STMW. The occurrence of the multicore structure of STMW in AEs was highest in spring (March–May) but decreased quickly as the season progressed.
