Interdecadal Variation in the Impact of Arctic Sea Ice on El Niño–Southern Oscillation: The Role of Atmospheric Mean Flow

Abstract This study reveals the remarkable interdecadal changes in the influence of boreal winter Arctic sea ice concentration (SIC) anomalies (ASICAs) in the Greenland–Barents Seas on the subsequent El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) development. Winter ASICA is strongly associated with the subsequent winter ENSO before the late 1980s and after the late 2000s, but their connection is weak during the 1990s and the 2000s. The interdecadal variations in the influence of ASICA on ENSO are associated with changes in the spatial structure of the ASICA-induced North Pacific atmospheric anomalies. During high-correlation periods, winter SIC increases in the Greenland–Barents Seas lead to tropospheric cooling via the suppression of upward surface heat fluxes, which further trigger an atmospheric teleconnection from the Arctic to the North Pacific. The accompanying North Pacific Oscillation–like atmospheric anomalies result in sea surface temperature (SST) warming in the subtropical North Pacific, which extends southward into the tropical Pacific via wind–evaporation–SST feedback and leads to surface westerly anomalies over the tropical western Pacific in the following summer. The tropical western Pacific westerly wind anomalies impact the subsequent ENSO development via triggering positive Bjerknes air–sea interaction. During low-correlation periods, atmospheric anomalies over the North Pacific generated by the winter ASICA are located more northward and cannot induce marked subtropical North Pacific SST anomalies and thus have a weak impact on the following ENSO development. Numerical experiments suggest that the interdecadal variation in the spatial structure of the North Pacific atmospheric anomalies induced by the winter ASICA is partly attributed to change in the atmospheric mean flow. Significance Statement Arctic sea ice is an important component of the global climate system. Studies have shown that Arctic sea ice has decreased significantly in recent decades, which is considered to be one of the most important responses of Earth’s climate system to global climate change. A number of studies have shown that Arctic sea ice anomalies have significant impacts on weather and climate over mid–high latitudes through tropospheric and stratospheric processes. Recent studies have suggested that the effects of Arctic sea ice anomalies could extend to the tropics via air–sea interactions. El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the strongest air–sea coupled system in the tropics and can have a significant impact on climate over the globe. ENSO is also considered to be one of the most important sources of subseasonal–seasonal climate predictability over many parts of the globe. It is therefore important to study the factors for the ENSO occurrence. A recent study showed that Arctic sea ice anomalies during boreal winter in the Greenland–Barents Seas have a significant impact on the following winter ENSO. In this study, we further reveal that the influence of winter Arctic sea ice anomalies in the Greenland–Barents Seas on the subsequent ENSO is unstable and has undergone significant interdecadal variation. We then investigate the mechanisms underlying the interdecadal variation via observational analysis and numerical simulations. The results of this study not only have implications for improving the prediction of ENSO but also could improve our understanding of the physical link between high-latitude climate systems and tropical air–sea coupling systems.

Statistical relationships between the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation and El Niño–Southern Oscillation

AbstractThe climate of the Pacific Ocean varies on interannual, decadal, and longer timescales. This variability is dominated by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO), both of which have profound impacts on countries within and well beyond the Pacific. To date, previous studies have only examined a small subset of the possible links between ENSO, its diversity, and the IPO. Here we focus on the statistical relationship between decadal variability in ENSO properties and the IPO, testing the null hypothesis that the IPO arises from random decadal changes in ENSO activity, including ENSO diversity. We use observed sea surface temperature (SST) records since 1920 to investigate how the timing, structure, frequency, duration, and magnitude of El Niño and La Niña events differ between IPO phases. We find that using the relative frequency of El Niño and La Niña events and either the mean event duration or SST magnitude can reproduce up to 60% of the IPO Tripole Index timeseries. While the spatial SST patterns that represent the IPO and ENSO are similar, the IPO is meridionally broader in the central to eastern Pacific, which may be caused by a lagged relationship with low-frequency SST variability in the equatorial Pacific. In addition, North Pacific SST anomalies of opposite sign to the tropical Pacific SST anomalies is a unique feature of the IPO that cannot be explained by decadal ENSO variability. This suggests a clear IPO and ENSO relationship, but also independence in some of the IPO’s characteristics.

Climate prediction of the seasonal sea-ice early melt onset in the Bering Sea

Based on the impact of large-scale circulation anomalies on sea-ice melting, this paper develops a statistical forecasting model for the seasonal sea-ice early melt onset (EMO) in the Bering Sea using the interannual increment prediction method. The prediction model considers three physically meaningful predictors: the January Beaufort High (P1-H500), the November sea-level pressure (P2-SLP) over eastern Siberia, and the November snow cover over the eastern European Plain (P3-Snowc). P1-H500 can influence the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly in the Bering Sea through ocean–atmosphere interactions, and this SST anomaly can persist from January to March. Subsequently, it affects the EMO in the Bering Sea. P2-SLP exhibits a close association with the east part of the midlatitude North Pacific SST in November. The colder midlatitude North Pacific SST anomalies, which persist from November until January and February of the following year, will be accompanied by warmer SST anomalies in the Bering Sea, which result in a decreased sea-ice extent and a later-than-usual EMO. The Arctic dipole anomaly in January is one of the ways in which P3-Snowc affects the EMO in the following year. The predicted EMO shows good agreement with the observed EMO in the cross-validation test for 1981–2022, with a temporal correlation coefficient of 0.45, exceeding the 99% confidence level. The prediction accuracy of the prediction model for positive and negative abnormal years of EMO is 60% and 41%, respectively.摘要基于大尺度环流异常对海冰消融的影响过程, 本文采用年际增量预测方法研制了白令海季节性海冰早期消融开始日期(EMO)的统计预测模型. 预测模型选取了3个具有明确物理意义的预测因子: 1月波弗特高压, 前期11月东西伯利亚地区海平面气压, 以及11月东欧平原积雪覆盖率. 1月波弗特高压可以通过海气相互作用影响白令海地区海温异常, 该海温异常能够从1月持续到3月, 进而影响白令海EMO. 11月东西伯利亚地区海平面气压与11月至次年2月北太平洋中纬度东部海温密切相关. 伴随着北太平洋中纬度东部冷海温异常的出现, 白令海地区会出现暖海温异常, 进而导致白令海海冰范围减少, EMO较晚. 1月北极偶极子异常是11月东欧平原积雪覆盖率影响次年白令海EMO的桥梁之一. 1981−2022年的交叉检验结果表明: 统计模型对白令海EMO具有较好的预测能力, 预测与观测的EMO之间时间相关系数达到了0.45, 超过了99%的置信水平. 统计模型对白令海EMO正常年份和异常年份的预测准确率分别为60%和41%.

Varying Relationship between La Niña and SST Anomalies in the Kuroshio and Adjacent Regions during Boreal Winter: Role of the East Asian Winter Monsoon

Abstract The winter sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Kuroshio and adjacent regions (KAR), which greatly influence the East Asian–North Pacific–North American climate, are closely related to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This SST relationship between the KAR and the equatorial eastern-central Pacific is widely assumed to be symmetric between El Niño and La Niña. Compared to previous studies indicating the significant and strong KAR warming during El Niño winters, this study indicates weakly negative KAR SST anomalies in the composite analysis for all La Niña events. Positive winter KAR SST anomalies unexpectedly appear in approximately half of La Niña events, which counteract negative SST anomalies in the rest of La Niña events. Further analysis suggests that the impact of La Niña on KAR SST anomalies is modulated by the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) during early winter. The weaker-than-normal EAWM offsets the anomalous northeasterly winds in the KAR induced by La Niña and then reinforces the KAR warming through warm oceanic advection. As for strong EAWM, it enhances the northeasterly winds to the west of an anomalous Philippine Sea cyclone associated with La Niña, leading to KAR cooling with more latent heat flux loss from the ocean and anomalous cold oceanic advection. Additionally, when the EAWM is independent of ENSO and is associated with the western Pacific pattern, it also can exhibit a pronounced influence on the KAR SST anomalies via the major processes of surface latent flux and horizontal heat advection in the ocean, accompanied by a change in Kuroshio transport. Significance Statement The interannual variability of SST from Philippine Sea to the Kuroshio and adjacent regions is considered an important forecast factor of the eastern China climate. Previous studies have reported a dipole SST pattern with Philippine Sea cooling and warming in the Kuroshio and adjacent regions during El Niño winter is dominant, and simply regarded that the effect of La Niña on western North Pacific SST anomalies was a mirror image of that of El Niño events. Here, we have found two distinctive SST patterns in the western North Pacific during La Niña winter. One type is the dipole SST pattern, characterized by Philippine Sea warming and by cooling in the Kuroshio and adjacent regions. The other type is the monopole SST pattern with uniform warming expanding from the Philippine Sea to the Kuroshio and adjacent regions. The dipole (monopole) SST pattern in western North Pacific is modulated by La Niña and a strong (weak) EAWM. Analysis shows that the above two SST patterns during La Niña winter are equally important during 1950–2021. This study has identified the influence of the EAWM independent of ENSO on the SST anomalies in the Kuroshio and adjacent regions.

Role of the Aleutian Low in Modulating the Connection between the Moderate El Niño and the Following Spring North Tropical Atlantic SST Anomalies

Abstract El Niño events are likely to be followed by significant positive sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) over the north tropical Atlantic (NTA). We find that this is not always true for El Niño with moderate intensity. Nearly half of the moderate El Niño cases are followed by the strong NTA SSTAs, but others are followed by the weak NTA SSTAs, indicating the uncertainty in the connection between the moderate El Niño and the NTA. The differences in the El Niño–related NTA SSTAs are due to the different extratropical teleconnection between El Niño and the NTA, manifesting as a Pacific–North American (PNA) pattern. Further analysis suggests that the deepened Aleutian low (AL) induces the negative North Pacific SSTA, which is associated with a wave train propagating eastward, and, modulates the El Niño–generated PNA pattern. Therefore, El Niños that are accompanied by the strong AL induce a strong PNA pattern that, in turn, leads to the strong NTA SSTAs. The strength of the AL coinciding with El Niño plays a crucial role in modulating the connection between the moderate El Niño and the NTA SSTAs. This observational evidence about the uncertainty in the El Niño–NTA connection and the role of the AL in modulating this connection is further supported by the model simulations that participated in phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). These results indicate that the combined effects of El Niño and the AL must be considered to fully understand the NTA SSTA variability. Significance Statement El Niño events often lead to significant warming over the north tropical Atlantic (NTA). We find that the strong El Niño almost always is accompanied by the strong NTA sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs), whereas the moderate El Niño can be followed by either the strong or weak NTA SSTAs, indicating the uncertainty in the connection between the moderate El Niño and the NTA SSTAs. Further analysis demonstrates that El Niño, which is accompanied by the strong (weak) Aleutian low leads to the strong (weak) NTA SSTAs, suggesting that the role of the Aleutian low must be considered to fully understand the El Niño–NTA connection.

Warm mid-Pliocene conditions without high climate sensitivity: the CCSM4-Utrecht (CESM 1.0.5) contribution to the PlioMIP2

Abstract. We present the Utrecht contribution to the Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project Phase 2 (PlioMIP2), using the Community Earth System Model version 1.0.5 (CCSM4-Utr). Using a standard pre-industrial configuration and the enhanced PlioMIP2 set of boundary conditions, we perform a set of simulations at various levels of atmospheric pCO2 (280, 400, and 560 ppm). This allows us to make an assessment of the mid-Pliocene reference (Eoi400) climate versus available proxy records and a pre-industrial control (E280), as well as determine the sensitivity to different external forcing mechanisms. We find that our simulated Pliocene climate is considerably warmer than the pre-industrial reference, even under the same levels of atmospheric pCO2. Compared to the E280 case, our simulated Eoi400 climate is on average almost 5 ∘C warmer at the surface. Our Eoi400 case is among the warmest within the PlioMIP2 ensemble and only comparable to the results of models with a much higher climate sensitivity (i.e. CESM2, EC-Earth3.3, and HadGEM3). This is accompanied by a considerable polar amplification factor, increased globally averaged precipitation, and greatly reduced sea ice cover with respect to the pre-industrial reference. In addition to radiative feedbacks (mainly surface albedo, CO2, and water vapour), a major contribution to the enhanced Pliocene warmth in these simulations is the warm model initialisation followed by a long spin-up, as opposed to starting from pre-industrial or present-day conditions. Added warmth in the deep ocean is partly the result of using an altered vertical mixing parameterisation in the Pliocene simulations, but this has a negligible effect at the surface. We find a stronger and deeper Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) in the Eoi400 case, but the associated meridional heat transport is mostly unaffected. In addition to the mean state, we find significant shifts in the behaviour of the dominant modes of variability at annual to decadal timescales. The Eoi400 El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) amplitude is greatly reduced (−68 %) versus the E280 one, while the AMOC becomes more variable. There is also a strong coupling between AMOC strength and North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the Eoi400, while North Pacific SST anomalies seem to have a reduced global influence with respect to the E280 through the weakened ENSO.

Skillful Subseasonal Prediction of United States Extreme Warm Days and Standardized Precipitation Index in Boreal Summer

AbstractSkillful subseasonal prediction of extreme heat and precipitation greatly benefits multiple sectors, including water management, public health, and agriculture, in mitigating the impact of extreme events. A statistical model is developed to predict the weekly frequency of extreme warm days and 14-day standardized precipitation index (SPI) during boreal summer in the United States (US). We use a leading principal component of US soil moisture and an index based on the North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) as predictors. The model outperforms the NCEP’s Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2) at weeks 3-4 in the eastern US. It is found that the North Pacific SST anomalies persist several weeks and are associated with a persistent wave train pattern (WTZ500), which leads to increased occurrences of blocking and extreme temperature over the eastern US. Extreme dry soil moisture conditions persist into week 4 and are associated with an increase in sensible heat flux and decrease in latent heat flux, which may help maintain the overlying anticyclone. The clear sky conditions associated with blocking anticyclones further decrease soil moisture conditions and increase the frequency of extreme warm days. This skillful statistical model has the potential to aid in irrigation scheduling, crop planning, reservoir operation, and provide mitigation of impacts from extreme heat events.

Interdecadal variability of South–Southeast Asian rainfall and cross‐equatorial flows during April–May

AbstractFrom April to May, South–Southeast Asian rainfall (SSEAR) and cross‐equatorial flows (CEFs) off the East African coast have exhibited interdecadal variability over the past four decades. Both SSEAR and CEF strengthened based on comparative analysis for the periods 1979–1998 and 1999–2016. Associated modulating processes feature warm sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical western North Pacific (WNP) and cold SST anomalies in the tropical eastern Pacific. These features lead to a low‐level clockwise circulation anomaly across the North and South Indian Ocean. This intensifies CEFs via anomalous southerly flows along the circulation's western section and transports moisture via anomalous westerly flows on its northern side that enhances SSEAR. After 1998, SSEAR and CEFs vary coherently from 1999 to 2005, but incoherently from 2006 to 2016. For coherent cases (1999–2005), warm SST anomalies in the tropical WNP invoke a clockwise circulation anomaly over the tropical Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, cold anomalies in the tropical Indian Ocean and strong warm anomalies over Asian landmasses cause a meridional temperature difference (MTD) forming a strong cyclonic anomaly in the north that constrains the clockwise circulation anomaly south of 15°N. The circulation's western section enhances CEFs, while anomalous westerly flows on its northern side enhance moisture supply over southern parts of the Asian landmasses thereby increasing SSEAR. For incoherent cases (2006–2016), SST anomalies are warm in both the tropical WNP and Indian Ocean, while anomalous warming over Asian landmasses is more moderate. A weakened MTD yields an isolated weakened cyclonic anomaly in the north allowing for the development of a northward‐displacing clockwise circulation anomaly with anomalous westerly flows north of 20°N. Rainfall increases a little in northern parts of South–Southeast Asia but decreases noticeably in southern parts. Intensified CEFs thus occur concurrently with decreased SSEAR.

PDO-Related Wintertime Atmospheric Anomalies over the Midlatitude North Pacific: Local versus Remote SST Forcing

AbstractObserved wintertime atmospheric anomalies over the central North Pacific associated with the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) are characterized by a cold/trough (warm/ridge) structure, that is, an anomalous equivalent barotropic low (high) over a negative (positive) sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly. While the midlatitude atmosphere has its own strong internal variabilities, to what degree local SST anomalies can affect the midlatitude atmospheric variability remains unclear. To identify such an impact, three atmospheric general circulation model experiments each having a 63-yr-long simulation are conducted. The control run forced by observed global SST reproduces well the observed PDO-related cold/trough (warm/ridge) structure. However, the removal of the midlatitude North Pacific SST variabilities in the first sensitivity run reduces the atmospheric response by roughly one-third. In the second sensitivity run in which large-scale North Pacific SST variabilities are mostly kept, but their frontal-scale meridional gradients are sharply smoothed, simulated PDO-related cold/trough (warm/ridge) anomalies are also reduced by nearly one-third. Dynamical diagnoses exhibit that such a reduction is primarily due to the weakened transient eddy activities that are induced by weakened meridional SST gradient anomalies, in which the transient eddy vorticity forcing plays a crucial role. Therefore, it is suggested that midlatitude North Pacific SST anomalies make a considerable (approximately one-third) contribution to the observed PDO-related cold/trough (warm/ridge) anomalies in which the frontal-scale meridional SST gradient (oceanic front) is a key player, although most of those atmospheric anomalies are determined by the SST variabilities outside of the midlatitude North Pacific.

Attenuation of Central Pacific El Niño Amplitude by North Pacific Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies

AbstractThere exists a pronounced asymmetry between the amplitudes of central Pacific (CP) and eastern Pacific (EP) El Niño sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA). The present study examines such an asymmetry and its relationship with the North Pacific SSTA. Results indicate that the weaker CP El Niño amplitude can be attributed to the weaker anomalous zonal wind response to the east–west equatorial SSTA gradient during its growing phase compared with EP El Niño. Furthermore, the occurrence of CP El Niño is closely associated with southwesterly surface wind anomalies in the subtropical North Pacific, as well as ocean warming reminiscent of the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO) pattern in its vicinity. Both the observations as well as the pacemaker experiments with a coupled global climate model suggest that the anomalous low-level southwesterlies, induced by the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO)-like atmospheric variability, can enhance anomalously positive SST signals and extend them southwestward to the central equatorial Pacific via the wind–evaporation–SST feedback. This will further attenuate the atmospheric response to zonal SSTA gradient, and hence weaken the amplitude of CP El Niño. Therefore, anomalous low-level southwesterlies over the subtropical North Pacific can effectively act as a conduit for tropical–subtropical air–sea interaction in that region, and can play an important role in limiting the intensity of CP El Niño.

Central North Pacific SST anomalies linked late winter haze to Arctic sea ice

AbstractHaze pollution in the North China Plain is becoming more serious and consequently causes inconvenience in daily life and harms health. The inter‐annual variation of haze days in the North China Plain in late winter (February and March) is closely related to the East Siberian Sea and Chukchi Sea ice in October, and the Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) plays a key role in delivering the effects of the sea ice on the haze. When the East Siberian Sea and Chukchi Sea ice increases in October, the October and November SST in the region over Minami‐Tori Shima and Midway Atoll decreases. This reduced SST then lowers the January and February SST around the northwestern side of the Hawaiian Islands. The lower SST around the northwestern side of the Hawaiian Islands modulates the atmospheric circulation and makes the diffusion conditions and water vapour conditions in the North China Plain more conducive to the accumulation and growth of pollutants. Large ensemble simulations from the Community Earth System Model validate the process whereby the East Siberian Sea and Chukchi Sea ice affects the SST in the aforementioned regions. The effect of changes in the SST around the northwestern side of the Hawaiian Islands on the meteorological conditions over the North China Plain was verified by numerical experiments using version 4 of the Community Atmosphere Model.

Individual and Combined Impacts of Tropical Indo-Pacific SST Anomalies on Interannual Variation of the Indochina Peninsular Precipitation

AbstractThis study documents interannual rainfall variations over the Indochina Peninsula (ICP) during the rainy season and individual and combined influences of tropical Indo-Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. The rainfall variability is large along the west coast in May–June, along the west coast and over the eastern mountains in July–August, and along the central Vietnam coast in September–November. More rainfall in May–June, July–August, and October–November occurs in the La Niña decaying years, La Niña decaying years and/or El Niño developing years, and La Niña developing years, respectively. The May–June rainfall variation along the west coast is associated with equatorial central-eastern Pacific (EP), south Indian Ocean, and western North Pacific SST anomalies. The July–August rainfall variation along the west coast and over the eastern mountains is related to equatorial central Pacific and tropical southeastern Indian Ocean SST anomalies. The October–November rainfall variation along the central Vietnam coast is affected by EP and tropical western Indian Ocean SST anomalies. The EP and tropical western Indian Ocean SST influence is through anomalous Walker circulation. The south Indian Ocean SST influence is via cross-equatorial flows. The tropical southeastern Indian Ocean SST influence is via an anomalous cross-equatorial overturning circulation. The equatorial central Pacific and western North Pacific SST influence is via a Rossby wave–type response. The analysis illustrates the importance of combined effects of regional SST anomalies on the ICP precipitation variation in different stages of the rainy season. Numerical experiments with SST anomalies imposed in different regions confirm the combined effects of the Indo-Pacific SST anomalies on the ICP rainfall variation.

The Asymmetric Atmospheric Response to the Midlatitude North Pacific SST Anomalies

AbstractForced by Pacific Decadal Oscillation‐related sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies with the same pattern but opposite signs in the western‐central North Pacific, nonlinear wintertime atmospheric responses are produced by a state‐of‐the‐art atmospheric general circulation model (GFDL AM2.1); that is, an obvious equivalent barotropic geopotential low appears over the cold SST forcing (“CSST”), whereas a weak baroclinic structure shows up corresponding to the warm SST forcing (“WSST”), and both of them have similar characteristics in the lower troposphere. Specifically, because of the relatively dry environment in the central North Pacific, nonlinear responses of moisture process including latent heat flux and low‐level atmosphere moisture advection induce asymmetric diabatic heating (Qd): in WSST, Qd tends to increase in the middle‐lower troposphere but decrease in the middle‐upper level, whereas it always increases in the whole troposphere in CSST. Thus, Qd has the same low‐level positive vertical gradient in both CSST and WSST, which produces similar atmospheric circulation anomalies in the lower troposphere. In turn, the asymmetric responses of low‐level temperature advection further modify air temperature meridional gradient as well as atmospheric baroclinicity in the lower troposphere, significantly shifting the transient eddy activities southward in CSST and greatly weakening their intensity in WSST, respectively. Accordingly, the transient eddy vorticity forcing primarily determines the upper‐level atmospheric responses in CSST, but it has unsystematic effects in WSST that are overtaken by Qd. Therefore, the dominance of diabatic heating in WSST and transient eddy forcing in CSST over the central North Pacific lead to the asymmetric atmospheric responses among which the asymmetry of moisture plays an essential role.

Combined Impact of El Niño–Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation on the Northern Winter Stratosphere

Using reanalysis and the sea surface temperature (SST) analysis, the combined impact of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) on the northern winter stratosphere is investigated. The warm and weak stratospheric polar vortex response to El Niño simply appears during positive PDO, whereas the cold and strong stratospheric polar vortex response to La Niña is preferable during negative PDO in the reanalysis. Two mechanisms may account for the enhanced stratospheric response when ENSO and PDO are in phase. First, the asymmetries of the intensity and frequency between El Niño and La Niña can be identified for the two PDO phases. Second, the extratropical SST anomalies in the North Pacific may also play a role in the varying extratropical response to ENSO. The North Pacific SST anomalies related to PDO superimpose ENSO SST anomalies when they are in phase but undermine them when they are out of phase. The superimposed North Pacific SST anomalies help to increase SST meridional gradient anomalies between tropical and extratropics, as well as to lock the local height response to ENSO. Therefore, the passages for the upward propagation of waves from the troposphere is more unimpeded when positive PDO is configured with El Niño, and vice versa when negative PDO is configured with La Niña.

Origins of the Decadal Predictability of East Asian Land Summer Monsoon Rainfall

AbstractThe present study aims to explore the origins of decadal predictability of East Asian land summer monsoon rainfall (EA-LR) and estimate its potential decadal predictability. As a preliminary study, a domain-averaged EA-LR index (EA-LI) is targeted as it represents the leading mode of variability reasonably well. It is found that the decadal variations of EA-LI are primarily linked to a cooling over the central-eastern tropical Pacific (CEP) and a warming over the extratropical North Pacific and western tropical Pacific (NWP) during May–October. Two numerical experiments suggest that the CEP cooling may be a major driver of EA-LR, while the NWP warming, which is largely a response, cannot be treated as a forcing to EA-LR. However, this does not mean that the NWP sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) play no role. To elaborate on this point, a third experiment is conducted in which the observed cooling is nudged in the CEP but the SST is nudged to climatology in the NWP (i.e., atmosphere–ocean interaction is not allowed). The result shows anomalous northerlies and decreased rainfall over East Asia. Results of the three experiments together suggest that both the forcings from the CEP and the atmosphere–ocean interaction in the NWP are important for EA-LR. Assuming that the tropical and North Pacific SSTAs can be “perfectly” forecasted, the so-called perfect prediction of EA-LI, which is achieved by a physics-based empirical model, yields a significant temporal correlation coefficient skill of 0.70 at a 7–10-yr lead time during a 40-yr independent hindcast (1968–2009), providing an estimation of the lower bound of potential decadal predictability of EA-LI.

Revisiting the Pacific Meridional Mode

Numerous studies demonstrated that the Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) can excite Central Pacific (CP) El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and that the PMM is mostly a stochastic phenomenon associated with mid-latitude atmospheric variability and wind-evaporation-SST feedback. Here we show that CP sea surface temperature (SST) variability exhibits high instantaneous correlations both on interannual (ENSO-related) and decadal (Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO)-related) timescales with the PMM. By prescribing an idealized interannual equatorial CP ENSO SST forcing in a partially-coupled atmosphere/slab ocean model we are able to generate a realistic instantaneous PMM response consistent with the observed statistical ENSO/PMM relationship. This means that CP ENSO and the PMM can excite each other respectively on interannual timescales, strongly suggesting that a fast positive feedback exists between the two phenomena. Thus, we argue that they cannot be considered two independent dynamical entities. Additionally, we show that the interannual CP ENSO SST forcing generates atmospheric circulation variability that projects strongly on the Aleutian Low and North Pacific SST anomalies that exhibit the characteristic PDO pattern.

Two Distinctive Processes for Abnormal Spring to Summer Transition over the South China Sea

The period from April to June signifies the transition from spring to summer over the South China Sea (SCS). The present study documents two distinct processes for abnormal spring to summer transition over the SCS. One process is related to large-scale sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical Indo-Pacific region. During spring of La Niña decaying years, negative SST anomalies in the equatorial central Pacific (ECP) and the southwestern tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) coexist with positive SST anomalies in the tropical western North Pacific. Negative ECP SST anomalies force an anomalous Walker circulation, negative southwestern TIO SST anomalies induce anomalous cross-equatorial flows from there, and positive tropical western North Pacific SST anomalies produce a Rossby wave–type response to the west. Together, they contribute to enhanced convection and an anomalous lower-level cyclone over the SCS, leading to an advanced transition to summer there. The other process is related to regional air–sea interactions around the Maritime Continent. Preceding positive ECP SST anomalies induce anomalous descent around the Maritime Continent, leading to SST increase in the SCS and southeast TIO. An enhanced convection region moves eastward over the south TIO during spring and reaches the area northwest of Australia in May. This enhances descent over the SCS via an anomalous cross-equatorial overturning circulation and contributes to further warming in the SCS. The SST warming in turn induces convection over the SCS, leading to an accelerated transition to summer. Analysis shows that the above two processes are equally important during 1979–2015.

A Moving Updated Statistical Prediction Model for Summer Rainfall in the Middle-Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River Valley

AbstractBecause summer rainfall in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River valley has remarkable interannual and decadal variability and because the precursors that modulate the interannual rainfall change with the decadal variation of the background state, a new model that employs a novel statistical idea is needed to yield an accurate prediction. In this study, the interannual rainfall model (IAM) and the decadal rainfall model (DM) were constructed. Moving updating of the IAM with the latest data within an optimal length of training period (20 yr) can partially offset the effect of decadal change of precursors in IAM. To predict the interannual rainfall of 2001–13 for validation, 13 regression models were fitted with precursors that change every 4–5 yr, from the preceding winter North Atlantic Ocean sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) dipole to the Mascarene high, followed by the East Asia sea level pressure anomaly (SLPA) dipole and the preceding autumn North Pacific SSTA dipole. The moving updated model demonstrated high skill in predicting interannual rainfall, with a correlation coefficient of 0.76 and a hit rate of 76.9%. The DM was linked to the April SLPA in the central tropical Pacific Ocean, and it maintained good performance in the testing period, with a correlation coefficient of 0.77 and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 7.7%. The statistical model exhibited superior capability even when compared with the best forecast by the Climate Forecast System, version 2 (CFSv2), initiated in early June, as indicated by increased correlation coefficient from 0.62 to 0.75 and reduced RMSE from 12.3% to 10.7%.

Interannual variability of western North Pacific SST anomalies and its impact on North Pacific and North America

In this study, the interannual variability of sea surface temperature (SST) and its atmospheric teleconnection over the western North Pacific (WNP) toward the North Pacific/North America during boreal winter are investigated. First, we defined the WNP mode as the first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) mode of SST anomalies over the WNP region (100–165°E, 0–35°N), of which the principle component time-series are significantly correlated with several well-known climate modes such as the warm pool mode which is the second EOF mode of the tropical to North Pacific SST anomalies, North Pacific oscillation (NPO), North Pacific gyre oscillation (NPGO), and central Pacific (CP)-El Nino at 95% confidence level, but not correlated with the eastern Pacific (EP)-El Nino. The warm phase of the WNP mode (sea surface warming) is initiated by anomalous southerly winds through reduction of wind speed with the background of northerly mean winds over the WNP during boreal winter, i.e., reduced evaporative cooling. Meanwhile, the atmospheric response to the SST warming pattern and its diabatic heating further enhance the southerly wind anomaly, referred to the wind–evaporation–SST (WES) feedback. Thus, the WNP mode is developed and maintained through winter until spring, when the northerly mean wind disappears. Furthermore, it is also known that anomalous upper-level divergence associated with WNP mode leads to the NPO-like structure over the North Pacific and the east–west pressure contrast pattern over the North America through Rossby wave propagation, impacting the climate over the North Pacific and North America.

State Dependence of Atmospheric Response to Extratropical North Pacific SST Anomalies

AbstractBy performing two sets of high-resolution atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) experiments, the authors find that the atmospheric response to a sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly in the extratropical North Pacific is sensitive to decadal variations of the background SST on which the SST anomaly is superimposed. The response in the first set of experiments, in which the SST anomaly is superimposed on the observed daily SST of 1981–90, strongly differs from the response in the second experiment, in which the same SST anomaly is superimposed on the observed daily SST of 1991–2000. The atmospheric response over the North Pacific during 1981–90 is eddy mediated, equivalent barotropic, and concentrated in the east. In contrast, the atmospheric response during 1991–2000 is weaker and strongest in the west. The results are discussed in terms of Rossby wave dynamics, with the proposed primary wave source switching from baroclinic eddy vorticity forcing over the eastern North Pacific in 1981–90 to mean-flow divergence over the western North Pacific in 1991–2000. The wave source changes are linked to the decadal reduction of daily SST variability over the eastern North Pacific and strengthening of the Oyashio Extension front over the western North Pacific. Thus, both daily and frontal aspects of the background SST variability in determining the atmospheric response to extratropical North Pacific SST anomalies are emphasized by these AGCM experiments.
