Socio-Economic and Buying Behavior of Groundnut Growers towards Micronutrient Fertilizer in Sabarkantha District of Gujarat, India

The study aims to analyze the impact of socio-economic, knowledge level and buying behavior of groundnut growers towards micronutrient in Sabarkantha district. This study employed a multistage sampling technique in the Sabarkantha district of north Gujarat, known for its high groundnut productivity. The focus was on three talukas-Himmatnagar, Idar and Talod-chosen for their extensive groundnut cultivation areas in 2024. From each taluka, five villages were randomly selected and eight growers from each village, totaling 120 growers, were selected. The study aimed to explore the socio-economic profiles of groundnut growers, assess their knowledge of micronutrient fertilizers, analyze their buying behavior. The majority of growers (55.83%) were between 36 and 50 years old, with more than 15 years of farming experience. Most belonged to nuclear families and had completed higher secondary education. Borewells and open wells were the main irrigation sources, with 57.50% also involved in animal husbandry. Annual incomes ranged between ₹1,44,901 and ₹6,72,800. Additionally, 73.33% between ₹3,38,501 and ₹8,26,500 from both farming and other sources. Groundnut growers demonstrated high awareness of the importance, access and benefits of micronutrients, though only 19.17% had soil health cards. Agro-input dealers (54.16%) were the primary information source and mixed micronutrients (49.16%) were most preferred. The study found a strong relationship between socio-economic variables and buying behavior, with 96.20% of the variation explained. Positive influences on purchasing included the price of micronutrients, growers’ income, farming experience and larger landholdings, while older growers and those with higher knowledge were less likely to purchase micronutrients. Most growers (75.00%) purchased from agro-service centers or dealers. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights into the socio-economic profiles, knowledge and buying behavior of groundnut growers in the Sabarkantha district.

Weed Management through Pre and Post-emergence Herbicides in Groundnut

A field experiment was conducted at Agronomy Instructional Farm, Department of Agronomy, Chimanbhai Patel College of Agriculture, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar, Banaskantha (North Gujarat Agro-climatic Zone of Gujarat) during June–October, 2021 to assess the effect of pre- and post-emergence herbicides on weed control in groundnut crop using Randomized Block Design with ten treatments and four replications. Among different weed management practices, two hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS recorded significantly higher number of pods per plant, resulted in significantly higher pod yield and haulm yield (23.70, 1980 kg ha-1 and 3082 kg ha-1, respectively) which was found at par with interculturing and hand weeding at 15 and 30 DAS (22.90, 1892 kg ha-1 and 2950 kg ha-1, respectively), post-emergence application of sodium acifluorfen 16.5+clodinafop-propargyl 8 EC @ 165+80 g ha-1 (22.53, 1835 kg ha-1 and 2864 kg ha-1, respectively) and imazethapyr 35 WG+imazamox 35 WG @ 70 g ha-1 (21.93, 1800 kg ha-1 and 2811 kg ha-1, respectively) due to better weed control of weeds as indicated by significantly lower density of sedges, grasses, broad leaf weeds and total weeds as evidenced by correlation and regression analysis between total weed density at 60 DAS, at harvest with the pod yield. Whereas, significantly lower number of pods per plant, pod yield and haulm yield at harvest were observed under unweeded check (10.30, 846 kg ha-1 and 1333 kg ha-1, respectively) due to significantly higher density of sedges, grasses, broad leaf weeds and total weeds observed in unweeded check.

Effect of Castor Transplanting and Different Organic Manures on Nutrient Content, Uptake and Soil Fertility Status after Harvest of Castor (Ricinus communis L.) under North Gujarat Agro Climatic Conditions

An attempt was made to investigate the effect of castor transplanting and different organic manures on content, uptake and soil fertility status after harvest of castor (Ricinus communis L.) under North Gujarat agro climatic conditions. The field experiment comprised of four levels of age of seedling (A1: Two weeks old seedling, A2: Three weeks old seedling, A3: Four weeks old seedling and A4: Normal sowing) and four levels of source of manures (S1: No compost, S2: Vermicompost, S3: FYM and S4: Castor shell compost) laid out in randomized block design with factorial concept with three replication. Castor variety GCH 8 was used as a test crop. The result indicated that Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur content in castor seed did not differed significantly due to different age of seedling and different source of manures. But uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur were significantly higher under treatment A4 (Normal sowing) and S4 (Castor shell compost). The available nitrogen, phosphorus, potash and sulphur in soil were unaffected due to age of seedling and source of manures. However, organic carbon was found significantly higher (0.204%) with treatment S4 (Castor shell compost). Interaction effect of age of seedling and source of manures exhibited significant effect on content of sulphur and uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium as well as sulphur.

Is Completeness and Timeliness of Public Health Action (PHA) a Robust Tool to Improve the TB Treatment Outcome in the Private Sector?

Background: Public health action (PHA) in tuberculosis (TB) includes six components: doing screening for HIV/diabetes, carrying out drug susceptibility testing, counseling on tobacco, counseling on nutrition, benefits of Nikshay Poshan Yojana, and contact tracing. All the patients notified by the private practitioners (PPs) and missing any of the above components are intervened by the government staff to cover all the above components. Objectives: The aim of the article is (1) to assess the timeliness and completeness of PHA and (2) to assess the impact of PHA on the quality of care for TB patients in the private sector. Methods: A sequential mixed-method (cross-sectional study followed by qualitative study) study was carried out in the Patan district, North Gujarat for a period of one year. Quantitative data were collected through home visits to patients residing in three randomly selected talukas out of nine talukas in the Patan district. Qualitative data were collected purposively from selected clinics of PPs (including a mix of PP notifying and not notifying TB till saturation is achieved) from the above talukas. Results: Out of a total of 176 patients from the private sector, 48 patients took all six components of PHA. Out of them, 98% were cured compared to 82% who did not receive PHA. None of the PP had heard about PHA or its components. Conclusion: The Public–private model for TB management needs strengthening. Regular and mandatory training of PPs on the latest TB management guidelines including importance of timely and complete PHA should be carried out.

Determining Potential Groundwater Recharge Zones in the North Gujarat Region of Gujarat State Using Techniques of Geoinformatics and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis

The rapid increase in population and industrialization has significantly raised the consumption of groundwater resources for domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes. This study aims to develop groundwater recharge potential zone maps to assist in the construction of artificial recharge structures in the North Gujarat Region of Gujarat, India. An integrated approach of remote sensing (RS), geographical information system (GIS), and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) were used to achieve this goal. Influencing factors of groundwater availability included geology, soil, lineament density, slope, rainfall, land use/land cover, geomorphology, and drainage density, were analyzed to delineate potential groundwater recharge zones. each influencing parameter was determined by using Saaty's Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, and sub-parameters were ranked according to the AHP scale. A weighted overlay analysis tool in ArcGIS software was employed to map the groundwater recharge potential zones in the North Gujarat region. The classified results of the recharge potential area in the study area consist of excellent (9.93%), good (27.90%), moderate (17.58%), poor (3.92%), and very poor (0.92%) These findings provide valuable insights for effectively planning and managing groundwater resource development in the region.

Knowledge of genetic and phenotypic association among economic traits helps plant breeders in outlying efficient breeding strategies for development of high yielding forage pearl millet variety. An experiment was conducted at the research farm of Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar, Gujarat to evaluate plant characteristics associated with green forage yield and its attributes in forage pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] genotypes in north Gujarat condition through correlation and path analyses during 2023. Twelve independent and 1 dependent variables were evaluated for the character association analysis of the 30 forage pearl millet genotypes. The evaluation was performed in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Data collection was done from 5 randomly selected plants and this data was used for analysis using R Studio. The green forage yield per plant had positive and significant correlation with plant height, number of tiller per plant, stem thickness, leaf length, leaf width, and dry fodder yield per plant at both genotypic and phenotypic level. Path analysis revealed the importance of leaf width and dry fodder yield per plant by showing high and positive direct effects towards green forage yield per plant. These characters also exhibited significant and positive association with green forage yield per plant at the genotypic and phenotypic. Hence, these traits could be considered as the vital component characters for development of high yielding genotypes in forage pearl millet.

Status of Alternaria leaf blight in cotton and its fungicidal management

Surveys were carried out in the three districts of North Gujarat, viz., Aravalli, Sabarkantha, and Banaskantha to investigate the severity of Alternaria leaf blight in cotton, The disease was found to be quite severe and with a mean PDI of 23.77, the Banaskantha district had the highest disease intensity of Alternaria leaf spot disease; in contrast, the average disease intensity in the Aravalli and Sabarkantha districts was 17.94 and 20.44 per cent, respectively. Further, to manage the disease, research was conducted to evaluate the in vitro and in planta bioefficacy of fungicides against Alternaria macrospora of cotton at the Department of Plant Pathology and Alternaria leaf blight in cotton at Agronomy Instructional farm, S D Agricultural University Sardarkrushinagar, Gujarat, respectively. Under in vitro condition, among five systemic fungicides, Carbendazim showed the highest per cent growth inhibition, while Propiconazole showed the lowest. Among different non-systemic fungicides, Mancozeb inhibited the radial growth of A. macrospora the most, while Chlorothalonil inhibited the least. Further, among five combined fungicides, Tebuconazole 50% + Trifloxistrobin 25 WG inhibited the most growth and Captan 70% + Hexaconazole 50 WP inhibited the least. Thereafter, the bio-efficacy of the two most effective fungicides from each group (two systemic, two non-systemic, and two combined fungicides) was tested under field conditions, and the mean disease intensity ranged from 12.28 to 36.43 per cent, with the lowest being Tebuconazole 50% + Trifloxystrobin 25 WG and the highest being untreated control. Prevalence and characterization of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. cyamopsidis causing bacterial blight of clusterbean in the semi-arid region of North Gujarat

The bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. cyamopsidis is the most widespread and destructive disease of clusterbean. The present study aimed to survey the major clusterbean growing areas, expanding in five districts i.e., Banaskantha, Patan, Sabarkantha, Mehsana and Aravali of North Gujarat. The study found that bacterial blight disease is prevalent in Idar, Ambaji, Danta, Sanali, Khedbramha, Shamalaji, Patan, Bhiloda, Visnagar, Deesa and Amirgadh. The highest mean disease incidence (28.44%) was recorded in Idar, Sabarkantha. Based on the gram straining it was observed that the test bacterium was gram-negative and rod-shaped. Further, the biochemical tests, such as starch hydrolysis, gelatin liquefaction, hydrogen sulphide production, catalase, and acid production from different sugars viz., sucrose, maltose, and dextrose showed a positive reaction, except, acid production from mannitol was negative. Based on the morphological, biochemical, and pathogenic characteristics, the pathogen was identified as Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. cyamopsidis.

Non-genetic Factors Associated with 305 Days Milk Yield in Kankrej Cattle

The performance data of Kankrej cattle for the present study were collected from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Anand, under the pedigree selection programme (PS) in Banaskantha district of Gujarat state. After the standardization of initial records, the 305DMY records of 6037 Kankrej cattle sired by 54 bulls calved during the period of 19 years from 2003 to 2022 were utilized in the study. The least squares analysis of variance to reduce the nonorthogonality after considering their villages, parity, Age at calving groups, year-month of birth groups and year-month of calving groups were used to analyze the data on 305DMY production trait. The average 305DMY for the Kankrej cow was estimated to be 2302 ± 9.01 kg. The fixed factors such as parity, villages and year month of the calving group considered in the study had significant (p<0.05) effects on the 305DMY traits except for the Age in the calving group (months) and year-month of the birth group. The non-significant effect of the year and month of birth highlighted the adaptive traits of the Kankrej cattle against the extreme temperature in the arid or semi-arid region of North Gujarat. The maximum estimated corrected yield and breeding value were estimated to be 3420 kg and 855 kg, respectively. The increased production performances observed in the study may be the result of the successful implementation of pedigree selection under the field conditions.

Effect of Organic Manures on Productivity in a Groundnut-Wheat Sequence under Organic Farming

An experiment was conducted during two consecutivekharif and rabi season from the year 2016-17 to 2018-19 for three years on to evaluate different organic sources performance on groundnut and wheat sequence under organic farming at Agronomy Instructional Farm, Chimanbhai Patel College of Agriculture, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar. The soil of experiment was loamy sand. Experiment was carried out in Large plot technique design and with eight replication for four treatments. From three years experiment result revealed that in kharif season, application of 100% nitrogen through castor cake sequring higher pod yield of groundnut and application of 75% nitrogen through castor cake for succeding wheat in rabi season for getting higher seed yield. Application of castor cake in both season sequred higher groundnut equivalent yield. Maximum gross (Rs 150300/ha) and net neturn (Rs 67922/ha) with BCR of 1.82 was obtained under Treatment T3 (100% RDN through castor cake in groundnut and 75% RDN through castor cake in succeeding wheat) under organic farming under North Gujarat Agro climatic conditions.

Nitrogen Management in Kharif Pearlmillet

An experiment was conducted during kharifseason of the years 2021 to 2023 (Three years) at Agronomy Instructional Farm, Chimanbhai Patel College of Agriculture, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar having loamy sand soil to study the Nitrogen management in kharif pearlmillet. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design and replicated four times with seven treatments. On three years pooled results application of 80 kg N/ha being at par with 75% RDN as chemical fertilizer in addition with 25% RDN through castor cake or vermicompost or FYM recorded significantly higher plant height at 60 DAS, at harvest, length of earhead over rest of treatments. Further, it also significantly increased seed yield (1631 kg/ha) and stover yield (3754 kg/ha). Maximum net realization and benifit : cost ratio (BCR) were registered with application of 80 kg N/ha as chemical fertilizer followed by 75 % RDN as chemical fertilizer + 25 % RDN through castor cake in pooled results. Higher yield and net realization can be secured with the application of either 100% RDN (Recommended Dose of Nitrogen) i.e. 80 kg/ha through chemical fertilizer + 25 % RDN through castor cake or vermicompost (20 kg N/ha) in addtion to recommend dose of phosphourus 40 kg/ha as basal under North Gujarat Agro climatic conditions.

In this paper 49 angiospermous species - 32 dicotyledons and 17 monocotyledons are listed. Polypogon monspeliensis Desf. and Medicago polymorpha L. are recorded for the first time from Gujarat.

A Contribution to the Study of the Vegetation and Flora of Khedbrahma Region of North Gujarat

The vegetation, and flora of Knedbrahma region of north Gujarat are discussed and the preliminary data based on two years survey are presented in this paper. 554 species have been enumerated which comprised 448 dicotyledons and 102 monocotyledons. Two new records for India namely, Desmodium neo-mexicanum A. Gray and Dalechampia scandens Linn. var. cordofana (Hochst.) Muell.-Arg. have been reported from this area under study. Five species such as Polycarpon tetraphyllum Linn., Melhania futteyporensis Munro ex Mast., Indigofera angulosa Edgew., Pulicaria crispa (Forsk.) Oliv. and Operculina petaloidea (Ghoisy) Van Oost., not mentioned in Cooke's flora of Presidency of Bombay (1901-1908) have been reported from the area.
