Location and Intensity Changes of the North Equatorial Countercurrent Tied to ITCZ Under Global Warming

AbstractPrevious studies have suggested that global ocean circulation would be significantly changed under global warming, while the change of North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) and its mechanisms are still unclear. Here, we investigate the location and intensity changes of NECC under global warming based on CESM1 high‐resolution long‐term simulations from the perspective of the Inter‐Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), considering the close connection between NECC and ITCZ and well‐established changes of ITCZ. It is found that the annual‐mean NECC shifts equatorward of 0.39° and weakens by 21.71% in the RCP8.5 scenario at the end of 21st century. The NECC change is seasonally dependent, with maximum shift and weakening during spring, consistent with the changes of ITCZ. Both the location and intensity changes of ITCZ are important in the NECC changes, especially for spring. The weakening and equatorward shift of ITCZ contributes almost equally to the strongest decrease of spring NECC (47.63%).

Do Sea Surface Winds and Currents in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean Derive the Extreme El Niños?

El Niño is the largest natural climate variability event on an interannual time scale occurring in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, and is linked to global climate change. The north equatorial countercurrent (NECC) is considered a significant feature of the tropical Pacific current system due to its location and eastward flow direction. The NECC has been suggested as a current that transports the warmer western Pacific waters to the eastern Pacific to trigger the El Niño event in the equatorial Pacific. We investigated how the movements of zonal wind stress (ZWS) and ocean surface currents (OSC) contribute to the sea surface temperature (SST) changes during the El Niño period. During moderate to severe Central Pacific El Niño events, the continuous flow of the NECC extending from the El Niño monitoring region into the eastern Pacific is rarely observed. In addition, a significant increase in ocean heat content compared to the 27-year climatological normal has been identified at temperatures above 28 °C. Therefore, we propose a hypothesis that the additional heat is supplied from the subsurface source and the warm pool is expanded by the subsurface equatorial countercurrent, known as the Equatorial Undercurrent, rather than by the surface currents. The heated water is expected to contribute to the evolution of El Niño by upwelling to the surface along the equator in a north–south symmetric feature.

Energetics of eddy-mean flow interactions in the western tropical Pacific Ocean

The eddy-mean flow interactions are critical processes in the ocean energy cycle. This study investigated the energetics of eddy-mean flow interactions in the western tropical Pacific Ocean using the multiscale window transform (MWT) and MWT-based canonical transfer theory, based on 16-year numerical outputs from the Ocean General Circulation Model for the Earth Simulator and two mooring measurements. Energy analysis revealed that prominent eddy kinetic energy (EKE) appears in the upper layer of the Sulawesi Sea and the source region of North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC), and in the subsurface layer along the Philippine coast. The kinetic energy in the upper layer is mainly transferred from the mean flow to the eddy field through barotropic instability. Below the thermocline, the prominent subsurface EKE is not only caused by barotropic conversion, but also by baroclinic one. Subsurface mesoscale eddies east of the Mindanao Island extract energy from mean flow through barotropic instability, and those further north seem to release their kinetic energy to the mean flow of North Equatorial Undercurrent, indicating inverse energy cascades. Our results highlight that the advection effect plays a key role in the horizontal distribution of EKE, which generally shifts the high EKE area a few degrees downstream from the eddy formation region. Particularly, in the source region of NECC, the advection term shifts the EKE center 5° eastward from ∼132°E to ∼137°E.

Seasonal and Interannual Movement of the Mindanao Current Retroflection at the Pacific Entrance of the Indonesian Seas

Abstract The seasonal and interannual variations of the Mindanao Current (MC) retroflection are studied using surface geostrophic currents of satellite altimeters covering January 1993–December 2019. The results show that the Mindanao Current mainstream retroflects back to the Pacific Ocean north of the Talaud Islands in boreal summer and intrudes into the northern Maluku Sea in boreal winter. The variation of the MC retroflection has resulted in the seasonal movement of the sea surface color fronts at the entrance of the Indonesian seas, both of which are highly correlated to the seasonal transport variations of the North Equatorial Countercurrent, lagging the latter due to the westward propagation of the seasonal Rossby waves. The MC retroflection and sea surface color fronts are found to move synchronously on interannual time scales at the Pacific entrance of the Indonesian seas, with the Niño-3.4 index lagging by about 2 months. The MC retroflection intrudes anomalously deeper than the seasonal cycle into the northern Maluku Sea in El Niño winters, while it tends to take a leaping path in La Niña winters. During El Niño summers, the leaping path of the MC is changed into a penetrating path sometimes. Significance Statement The Mindanao Current is the western boundary current (WBC) of the North Pacific Ocean tropical gyre and is much stronger than the ocean interior gyre circulation. This equatorward WBC forces strong exchanges between the equatorial Pacific and the marginal seas as it turns eastward at the entrance of the Indonesian seas. The path of the Mindanao Current retroflection is very important for Rossby wave reflection and for Indo-Pacific interbasin exchange leading to global repercussions, both of which are thought to be controlled by linear dynamics in the past. Here, we disclose the seasonal and interannual movement of the retroflection path, showing strong nonlinear dynamics important for ENSO and interocean exchange.

Enriched Regions of 228Ra Along the U.S. GEOTRACES Pacific Meridional Transect (GP15)

AbstractThe half‐life of 228Ra (5.7 years) aligns well with near‐surface and near‐bottom ocean mixing timescales. Because 228Ra is sourced from sediments, regions of enhanced activity represent water that has recently interacted with sediments on the continental margin or seabed. The GP15 meridional transect from Alaska to Tahiti along152°W encountered several regions in the upper ocean where 228Ra was enriched. These enrichments follow surface and subsurface ocean current patterns and pair with earlier measurements of 228Ra and transient radionuclides to reveal the origins of these enriched regions. An enriched region at Alaska margin stations 1–3 was sourced locally but did not extend to the Alaskan trench at station 4. A large shallow region between 47° and 32°N. was sourced from the west by the North Pacific Current; another shallow enriched region between 11° and 5° N was also sourced from the west by the North Equatorial Countercurrent. Subsurface enrichments (100–400 m) between 18 and 47°N were associated with Central Mode Water and North Pacific Intermediate Water. The 228Ra activities in the upper Pacific were six times lower than activities in the Atlantic. In deep waters the primary enrichment was 27°–47°N. Two stations (32° and 37°N) were especially enriched, having near‐bottom inventories several times greater than other stations. With these two exceptions the remaining Pacific stations exhibited averaged inventories lower than those in the Atlantic. There was one region of enriched 223Ra (half‐life = 11 days) above the Puna Ridge near Hawaii.

Tropical decadal variability in nutrient supply and phytoplankton community in the Central Equatorial Pacific during the late Holocene

We have reconstructed baseline δ15N and δ13C of export production at Kingman Reef in the Central Equatorial Pacific (CEP) at sub-decadal resolution, nearly continuously over the last 2000 years. The changes in δ15N reflects the strength of the North Equatorial Counter Current (NECC) relative to the South Equatorial Current (SEC), and to a lesser extent, the North Equatorial Current (NEC). Seasonal to multi-decadal variation in the strength of these currents, through the redistribution of heat, have global climate impacts and influence marine and terrestrial ecosystems. We use modern El Niño-La Nina dynamics and the Tropical Pacific Decadal Variability (TPDV) pattern, which is defined in the CEP, as a framework for analyzing the isotopic data. The CEP δ15N and δ13C records exhibit multi-decadal (50–60 year) variability consistent with TPDV. A large multi-centennial feature in the CEP δ15N data, within age-model uncertainties, is consistent with one of the prolonged dry-pluvial sequences in the American west at the end of the Medieval Climate Anomaly, where low TPDV is correlated with drier conditions. This unique record shows that the strength of the NECC, as reflected in baseline δ15N and δ13C, has at quasi-predictable intervals throughout the late Holocene, toggled the phytoplankton community between prokaryotes and picoplankton versus eukaryotes.

Assessing the drift of fish aggregating devices in the tropical Pacific Ocean

Abstract. The tropical Pacific Ocean is characterized by its dominant zonal flow, strong climate dependence on the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and abundant tuna stocks. Tuna fisheries in the West and Central Pacific Ocean accounted for 55 % of the world-wide tuna catch in 2019 and are one of the main sources of income in many Pacific island nations. One of the dominant fishing methods in this region relies on the use of drifting fish aggregating devices (dFADs): rafts with long underwater appendages (on average 50 m deep) that aggregate fish. Although currents such as the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) and South Equatorial Current (SEC) in the tropical Pacific Ocean vary strongly with ENSO, little is known about the impact of this variability in flow on dFAD dispersion. In this study, virtual Lagrangian particles are tracked for the period 2006 to 2021 over the domain in a 3D hydrodynamic model and are advected in simulations with only surface flow, as well as simulations using a depth-averaged horizontal flow over the upper 50 m, representing virtual dFADs. Zonal displacements, eddy-like behaviour and ENSO variability are then studied for both types of virtual particles. It was found that virtual particles advected by surface flow only are displaced up to 35 % farther than virtual dFADs subjected to a depth-averaged flow, but no other major differences were found in dispersion patterns. The strongest correlations between ENSO and virtual dFAD dispersion for the assessed variables were found in the West Pacific Ocean, with Pearson correlation coefficients of up to 0.59 for virtual dFAD displacement. Connections between ENSO and eddy-like behaviour were found in the western part of the SEC, indicating more circulation and meandering during El Niño. These findings may be useful for improving sustainable deployment strategies during ENSO events and understanding the ocean processes driving the distribution of dFADs.

A Mechanism for the Generation of a Warm SST Anomaly in the Western Equatorial Pacific: A Pathway Perspective

AbstractProcesses leading to the onset and development of an El Niño event in the tropical Pacific remain elusive. Observed data and Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM) simulations are used to reveal a well‐defined pattern of sea surface temperature (SST) perturbations along the mean North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) pathways in association with the onset and evolution of some El Niño events. The OGCM‐based sensitivity experiments are conducted to illustrate how a warm SST anomaly (SSTA) on the equator can result from a thermal forcing that is prescribed north of 10°N, similar to observed SST anomalies in December 1988. Within approximately one year, the imposed SST anomaly north of 10°N tends to be transported to the dateline region on the equator by the mean ocean circulation in the western Pacific (the low‐latitude western boundary current and the NECC). In due course, an upper‐layer ocean warming is generated off the equator at 6–10°N and then on the equator, which acts to induce a westerly wind anomaly response; a simple statistical atmospheric wind stress model is then used to depict an expected westerly wind response. These resultant SST and surface wind perturbations can couple together over the western tropical Pacific, forming air‐sea interactions and setting up a stage for El Niño onset. As such, this pathway mechanism can reasonably well explain the first appearance of a warm SST anomaly on the equator in the dateline region and the corresponding development of westerly wind anomalies over the western Pacific in association with El Niño onset.

Mooring Measurements of Full-Depth Zonal Currents along the 143°E Meridian in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean

Abstract Full-depth ocean zonal currents in the tropical and extratropical northwestern Pacific (TNWP) are studied using current measurements from 17 deep-ocean moorings deployed along the 143°E meridian from the equator to 22°N during January 2016–February 2017. Mean transports of the North Equatorial Current and North Equatorial Countercurrent are estimated to be 42.7 ± 7.1 Sv (1 Sv ≡ 106 m3 s−1) and 10.5 ± 5.3 Sv, respectively, both of which exhibit prominent annual cycles with opposite phases in this year. The observations suggest much larger vertical extents of several of the major subsurface currents than previously reported, including the Lower Equatorial Intermediate Current, Northern Intermediate Countercurrent, North Equatorial Subsurface Current, and North Equatorial Undercurrent (NEUC) from south to north. The Northern Subsurface Countercurrent and NEUC are found to be less steady than the other currents. Seasonal variations of these currents are also revealed in the study. In the deep ocean, the currents below 2000 m are reported for the first time. The observations confirm the striation patterns of meridionally alternating zonal currents in the intermediate and deep layers. Further analyses suggest a superposition of at least the first four and two baroclinic modes to represent the mean equatorial and off-equatorial currents, respectively. Meanwhile, seasonal variations of the currents are generally dominated by the first baroclinic mode associated with the low-mode Rossby waves. Overall, the above observational results not only enhance the knowledge of full-depth current system in the TNWP but also provide a basis for future model validation and skill improvement.

Spatial and temporal variability in mode-1 and mode-2 internal solitary waves from MODIS-Terra sun glint off the Amazon shelf

Abstract. The Amazon shelf is a key region for intense internal tides (ITs) and nonlinear internal solitary wave (ISWs) generation associated with them. The region shows well-marked seasonal variability (from March to July, MAMJJ, and from August to December, ASOND) of the circulation and stratification, which can both induce changes in the ISW physical characteristics. The description of the seasonal and neap–spring tidal variability in the ISWs off the Amazon shelf is performed for the first time using a meaningful data set composed of 140 MODIS-Terra imagery from 2005 to 2021, where about 500 ISW signatures were identified in the sun glint region. Previous studies have documented the existence of mode-1 ISWs, but the region appears as a newly described hotspot for mode-2 ISWs. ISW packets separated by typical mode-1 (95–170 km; 2.1–3.8 m s−1) and mode-2 (46–85 km; 1.0–1.9 m s−1) IT wavelengths have been identified and mapped coming from different IT generation sites. For each ISW, a group of waves (3 to 10) is generally follows the largest crest. The intra-packet distance between each wave in the group is about 10 to 20 km. Regions of higher occurrence of ISWs are spaced by a IT mode-1 wavelength. We make the assumption that it might correspond to the IT reflection beams at the surface, which may generate newer ISWs. The mean mode-1 and mode-2 inter-packet distances do not show significant differences according to their IT generation sites. The ISW activity is higher (more than 60 % of signatures) during spring tides than neap tides. In the region under the influence of the North Equatorial Counter Current (NECC), ISWs are separated by a mean mode-1 IT wavelength which is 14.3 % higher during ASOND than during MAMJJ due to a deeper thermocline and the reinforcement of the NECC. These ISWs are also characterized by a wider inter-packet distance distribution (higher standard deviation) that may be related to the stronger eddy kinetic energy (EKE) during ASOND compared to MAMJJ. The mean inter-packet distance of mode-2 ISWs remains almost unchanged during the two seasons, but the inter-packet distance distribution is wider in ASOND than in MAMJJ as for mode 1. Note that these results need to be treated with caution, as only few occurrences of mode-2 waves were found during MAMJJ. In the region of the NECC, the direction of propagation for all modes is very similar in MAMJJ (about 30∘ clockwise from the north), whereas, for ASOND, the ISWs propagate in a wider pathway (from 0 to 60∘ clockwise from the north), due to a much larger eddy activity. During ASOND, as the background flux goes further east, the inter-packet distances become larger (4 % for mode 1 and 7.8 % for mode 2). These results show that the reinforcement of the NECC in ASOND appears to play a role in diverting the waves towards the east, increasing their phase velocities and their eastern traveling direction component when compared to MAMJJ. Calculations of the IT velocities using the Taylor–Goldstein equation supported our results regarding the presence of ISWs associated with mode-2 ITs and additionally the IT seasonal variability.

Validating the occurrence of the giant mottled eel (Anguilla marmorata) in the Galápagos Islands.

The giant mottled eel (Anguilla marmorata) is distributed mostly in the Indo-West Pacific. However, a few records indicate the presence of this eel in the Tropical Central and East Pacific. In April 2019, an eel specimen was caught in a small stream in San Cristobal Island, Galápagos. Morphological and molecular characters (16S and Cytb mtDNA sequences) confirmed the species as A. marmorata Quoy & Gaimard, 1824. The re-discovery of A. marmorata in Galápagos supports the hypothesis of an eastward range expansion from the west, probably through the North Equatorial Counter-Current.

Upper-Ocean Circulation and Tropical Atlantic Interannual Modes

Abstract The impact of tropical Atlantic Ocean variability modes in the variability of the upper-ocean circulation has been investigated. For this purpose, we use three oceanic reanalyses, an interannual forced-ocean simulation, and satellite data for the period 1982–2018. We have explored the changes in the main surface and subsurface ocean currents during the emergence of Atlantic meridional mode (AMM), Atlantic zonal mode (AZM), and AMM–AZM connection. The developing phase of the AMM is associated with a boreal spring intensification of North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) and a reinforced summer Eastern Equatorial Undercurrent (EEUC) and north South Equatorial Current (nSEC). During the decaying phase, the reduction of the wind forcing and zonal sea surface height gradient produces a weakening of surface circulation. For the connected AMM–AZM, in addition to the intensified NECC, EEUC, and nSEC in spring, an anomalous north-equatorial wind curl excites an oceanic Rossby wave (RW) that is boundary-reflected into an equatorial Kelvin wave (KW). The KW reverses the thermocline slope, weakening the nSEC and EUC in boreal summer and autumn, respectively. During the developing spring phase of the AZM, the nSEC is considerably reduced with no consistent impact at subsurface levels. During the autumn decaying phase, the upwelling RW-reflected mechanism is activated, modifying the zonal pressure gradient that intensifies the nSEC. The NECC is reduced in boreal spring–summer. Our results reveal a robust alteration of the upper-ocean circulation during AMM, AZM, and AMM–AZM, highlighting the decisive role of ocean waves in connecting the tropical and equatorial ocean transport.

Molecular data, ecological niche, and dispersal models reveal a trans-Atlantic shallow-water octopus species

The tropical Octopus insularis is a shallow-water species widely distributed in the western Atlantic. Recent studies of niche models have identified suitable habitats for its settlement also on the east coast of the Atlantic. Considering the pelagic larval period and the high tolerance of this species to environmental variations, this study aimed to analyze the possibility of O. insularis occurrence in the West Atlantic (São Tomé Island) through molecular analyses, dispersion, and niche models. The molecular analyses were performed using fragments of 481 bp of the mitochondrial gene (cox1) from three muscle samples collected in São Tomé Island. The O. insularis long-range connectivity between South America and Western Africa was analyzed using a Lagrangian particle tracking model. Additionally, O. insularis records across its entire known distribution were applied to run the ecological niche model (ENM) using the Maxent algorithm. The Bayesian phylogenetic reconstruction showed that two of the three octopus sequences from São Tomé island (Central-Western Africa) belong to a monophyletic and well-supported O. insularis clade. The third octopus sample revealed a new species related to the clade with the Octopus vulgaris species complex. The dispersal models pointed out that passive particles could potentially reach the seamounts region at Africa coast via oceanic currents (mainly the North Equatorial Countercurrent) from São Pedro and São Paulo archipelago (Central-Western Region of the Atlantic) in a period of ∼30–60 days. This suggests that São Pedro and São Paulo archipelago could act as a potential source of paralarvae to Western Africa, although we hypothesize that this connection was more common during the Pleistocene, when sea level was around 120 m lower. In addition to the already known areas of O. insularis occurrence, the ENM pointed suitable habitats to the octopus settlement from Guinea-Bissau down to Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, and African Islands, such as São Tomé and Príncipe. The new record of O. insularis in Africa raises important questions regarding regional fisheries management. Considering that O. insularis is highly tolerant to environmental variations and very adapted to warm shallow waters, there is a possibility that octopus fisheries stocks on the African coast have a mixed composition (O. vulgaris, O. insularis, and Octopus sp.) and therefore the fisheries must follow management measures suitable for each species. In addition, further studies should be carried out in order to characterize and describe the potential new octopus species found only in São Tomé Island according to our genetic survey.

Revisiting the tropical Atlantic western boundary circulation from a 25-year time series of satellite altimetry data

Abstract. Geostrophic currents derived from altimetry are used to investigate the surface circulation in the western tropical Atlantic over the 1993–2017 period. Using six horizontal sections defined to capture the current branches of the study area, we investigate their respective variations at both seasonal and interannual timescales, as well as the spatial distribution of these variations, in order to highlight the characteristics of the currents on their route. Our results show that the central branch of the South Equatorial Current and its northern branch near the Brazilian coast, the North Brazil Current component located south of the Equator, and the Guyana Current have similar annual cycles, with maxima (minima) during late boreal winter (boreal fall) when the Intertropical Convergence Zone is at its southernmost (northernmost) location. In contrast, the seasonal cycles of the North Brazil Current branch located between the Equator and 7–8∘ N, its retroflected branch, the northern branch of the South Equatorial Current to the west of 35∘ W, and the North Equatorial Countercurrent show maxima (minima) during late boreal summer (boreal spring), following the remote wind stress curl strength variation. West of 32∘ W, an eastward current (the Equatorial Surface Current, ESC) is observed between 2–2∘ N, identified as the equatorial extension of the retroflected branch of the North Brazil Current. It is part of a large cyclonic circulation observed between 0–6∘ N and 35–45∘ W during boreal spring. We also observed a secondary North Brazil Current retroflection flow during the second half of the year, which leads to the two-core structure of the North Equatorial Countercurrent and might be related to the wind stress curl seasonal changes. To the east, the North Equatorial Countercurrent weakens and its two-core structure is underdeveloped due to the weakening of the wind stress. At interannual scales, depending on the side of the Equator examined, the North Brazil Current exhibits two opposite scenarios related to the phases of the tropical Atlantic Meridional Mode. At 32∘ W, the interannual variability of the North Equatorial Countercurrent and of the northern branch of the South Equatorial Current (in terms of both strength and/or latitudinal shift) are associated with the Atlantic Meridional Mode, whereas the variability of the Equatorial Surface Current intensity is associated with both the Atlantic Meridional Mode and Atlantic Zonal Mode phases.

Diatom distribution in Holocene sediments from the northern West Caroline Basin (western equatorial Pacific) and their environmental significance

Diatoms are an important component of submarine biogenic sediments and often used for carrying out palaeoceanographical reconstructions. To understand the relationship between diatoms and environment in the western equatorial Pacific, diatoms from the Holocene sediments in the northern West Caroline Basin were selected for analysis. We made quantitative statistics on diatoms and divided diatom assemblages through cluster analysis. A total of 53 species or varieties of diatoms belonging to 22 genera were identified. The range of diatom abundance was 0-88,373 valves/g. The diatoms found were mainly oceanic warm-water species. Overall, Azpeitia nodulifera was the species with the highest contribution, followed by Hemidiscus cuneiformis and Thalassiosira pacifica with these three species together accounting for approximately 80% in this area. We identified four diatom groupings and divided the study area into three regions. Diatom assemblage I in the West Caroline Basin was mainly affected by the North Equatorial Counter Current (NECC), Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) and upwelling, and the supply of nutrients was relatively high. Assemblage II in the West Caroline Ridge was less influenced by currents, and thus had lower abundance and species diversity than assemblage I. The complex diatom assemblages in the Yap Trench were probably controlled by Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCPW) and Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (LCPW).

Latitudinal transition of epipelagic mesozooplankton in the northwestern Pacific in winter

The northwestern Pacific (NWP) is a hotspot of marine biodiversity study, and zooplankton is a crucial secondary producer in the marine ecosystem. It is of utmost importance to do extensive study on the distribution of zooplankton community in the NWP. The distribution of epipelagic zooplankton community in the 143–146°E section between the equator and 36°N in winter was examined in this study. The findings indicated that the Kuroshio extension, the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, the North Equatorial Current and the North Equatorial Countercurrent were the four main ocean currents in the NWP that regulated the latitudinal transition of epipelagic mesozooplankton and split the sample section into four station groups. The key factors influencing zooplankton's geographic distribution were temperature, primary productivity, and current movement. In general, as latitude increased, zooplankton abundance and biomass first decreased and subsequently flourished in the NWP. Diversity indexes and indicator species also revealed the difference across the communities in four station groups. The body length of zooplankton declined gradually from north to south under the combined influence of temperature and primary production, with the minimum in the oligotrophic subtropical zone and a sub-peak in the high primary production area near the equator. Additionally, the abundance of zooplankton was higher in the winter than in the summer due to seasonal fluctuations in the properties of the ocean currents. This study elucidated the control effects of ocean currents on the latitudinal distribution of zooplankton, supplemented records of the geographic distribution and body length characteristics of zooplankton communities in the NWP, and provided the basis for further research on the ecological role of zooplankton communities and the global changes of marine ecosystems.

Spatial-temporal variations of short-lived mesoscale eddies and their environmental effects

Mesoscale eddies (MEs) affect the transport and redistribution of oceanic matter and energy. The long-lived and long-distance propagation of individual eddies has garnered extensive attention; however, short-lived MEs (< 7 days) have been widely overlooked. In this study, the basic features of short-lived MEs and their spatial-temporal variations in a tropical eddy-rich region were extracted and analyzed for the first time. Short-lived cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies (CEs/AEs) were found to be widespread in two eddy belts in the tropical region of the western Pacific warm pool (WPWP). The CEs and AEs were formed by the shear instability between large-scale circulations and were distributed on both sides of the North Equatorial Countercurrent, with significant differences in spatial distribution. The variations in sea surface temperature, mixed layer depth, and surface chlorophyll-a concentration in the core of the WPWP were spatially and temporally related to the development of the two eddy belts. This new insight into short-lived MEs in the tropical region contributes to our current understanding of ocean eddies. The potential impacts of short-lived MEs on climate change, global air–sea interactions, and tropical cyclone formation should receive adequate attention and further assessment in future research.

Destination of New Guinea Coastal Undercurrent in the western tropical Pacific: Variability and linkages

The New Guinea Coastal Undercurrent (NGCUC) is considered a bottleneck in the western tropical Pacific (WTP), carrying upper-to-intermediate waters from the south to the northwestern Pacific, thereby playing a fundamen tal role in the interhemispheric water mass exchange. However, how the NGCUC links to the circulation in the WTP was insufficiently studied. This work explores the destination of NGCUC waters, its spatiotemporal changes, and possible physical processes linked with the downstream NGCUC using ocean reanalysis for 22 years (1994 – 2015). Lagrangian particle tracking discloses eight major destinations of the NGCUC: The Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC, 35.26%), the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC, 12.3%), the North (13.33%) and South (8.85%) Subsurface Countercurrents, the Equatorial Deep Jet (11.49%), the Mindanao Undercurrent (13.24%), and the Indonesian (3.47%) and Halmahera (0.86%) Throughflows. The NGCUC waters are distributed mainly to the east (81.65%) and their dissemination varies markedly with depth. These destinations exhibit significant variations on seasonal and interannual time scales. The NGCUC strengthens (weakens) during summer (winter) and more NGCUC waters are distributed westward and northeastward (eastward). Interannually, the distribution of the NGCUC water is influenced by El Niño-Southern Oscillation, in which most of its eastward-distributed waters shift northward (equatorward) in El Niño (La Niña) phase joining the strengthened NECC (EUC). Changes in the NGCUC water destination can transform the water mass properties in the WTP. The findings of this study also emphasize the fundamental role of eddies in trapping and redistributing the NGCUC waters and linking the currents in the WTP.

The Western Pacific North Equatorial Countercurrent Responses to Two Forms of El Niño during the Period 1978 to 2017

This research aims to examine how the Western Pacific North equatorial countercurrent (NECC) flow reacts to two different forms of El Niño (EN) over a 40-year period. To establish the prevailing modes for each season, we implemented Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis on the eastward current component of the Ocean Reanalysis System 5 (ORAS5) dataset. In comparison to the Central Pacific (CP) episode, the time series principal component of the first mode (PC1) demonstrated that the strongest NECC’s magnitude often emerged during the development period (spring to fall) of the Eastern Pacific (EP) EN event. However, in episode CP 2002/2003, we witnessed an abnormal behavior in which the stronger NECC manifested. This was due to the emergence of a strong anomalous westerly wind, which differed from other CP events and forced the NECC’s magnitude to be greater. When approaching the peak stage, on the other hand, the magnitude of the NECC during the CP episode was typically greater than that of the EP episode. The NECC’s magnitude fell greatly in the second year of the EP episode, particularly during the spring season, since most EP episodes would transition into an La Niña (LN) event in the succeeding event. During the EP EN, it was found that the strength of the westerly wind had a bigger effect on the NECC than during the CP EN.

Forcing mechanisms of the circulation on the Brazilian Equatorial Shelf

The Brazilian Equatorial Shelf (BES) is a very dynamic region due to the influence of various forcings: trade winds, macrotides, the Amazon River, and the North Brazil Current (NBC). To investigate each forcing’s role in BES circulation, a control simulation and three sensitivity simulations (without rivers, without tides, and without winds) were performed using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) with a horizontal resolution of 1/24° and realistic forcings. The results showed that the NBC advected low-salinity waters from the Amazon River northwestward to Caribbean Sea and occasionally eastward through the NBC retroflection. The NBC exhibited the strongest flow when all forcings were included in the simulation. On the other hand, southeasterly winds inhibited the NBC retroflection system and, thus reducing its contribution to North Equatorial Counter Current (NECC) and Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC). The simulation without tides showed a plume more advected by the NBC and constricted to the first 10 m of the water column, while in the simulation without wind the plume was less advected northwestward by the weakened NBC and spread more toward the shelf break. The correlation analysis highlighted the complexity of the system, the complementarity of the forcings and their time-variable interdependence. The three sensitivity simulations and correlation analysis demonstrated the wind to be the main mechanism of the circulation in the BES. The sensitivity simulations also gave insight of how circulation would respond in a future scenario if climate changes persist. Previous studies suggest that the reduced Amazon runoff may indirectly weaken Atlantic ITCZ and thus trade winds causing a weakened circulation in tropical Atlantic. Our results show that this weakened circulation would advect even less fresh water northward, worsening the disturbances in North Atlantic due to the reduced freshwater supply.
