Hybrid process combining ultrafiltration and electro-oxidation for COD and nonylphenol ethoxylate removal from industrial laundry wastewater

Laundry wastewater is a significant source of nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPEO) at wastewater treatment plants, where its breakdown forms persistent nonylphenol (NP). NP poses risks as an endocrine disruptor in wildlife and humans. This study investigates the degradation of NPEO and COD in industrial laundry wastewater (LWW) using a two-stage process combining ultrafiltration (UF) and electro-oxidation (EO). UF was used to remove suspended solids, while soluble COD (COD0 = 239 ± 6 mg.L-1) and NPEO (NPEO0 = 341 ± 8 μg.L-1) were oxidized by the EO process. Different operating parameters were studied such as current density, electrolysis time, type of cathode and supporting electrolyte concentration. Using an experimental design methodology, the optimal conditions for COD and NPEO3-17 degradation were recorded. This included achieving 97% degradation of NPEO3-17 and 61% degradation of COD, with a total operating cost of 3.65 USD·m-3. These optimal conditions were recorded at a current density of 15 mA·cm-2 for a 120-minute reaction period in the presence of 4 g·Na2SO4 L-1 using a graphite cathode. The EO process allowed for reaching the guidelines required for water reuse (NPEO <200 μg.L-1, COD < 100 mg·L-1) in the initial laundry washing cycles. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that both NP and NPEO compounds, including higher and shorter ethoxylate chains (NPEO3-17), were effectively degraded during the EO process, with removal efficiencies between 94% and 98%. This confirms the EO process's capability to effectively degrade NP, the by-product of NPEO breakdown.

Microbial synergies drive simultaneous biodegradation of ethoxy and alkyl chains of Nonylphenol Ethoxylate in fluidized bed reactors

The widely-used surfactant Nonylphenol Ethoxylate (NPEO) produces endocrine-disrupting compounds during biodegradation, with these byproducts being more harmful than untreated NPEO. This study investigates the effectiveness of a Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) in reducing the production of 4-Nonylphenol (4-NP) during the biodegradation of NPEO. Two identical FBR filled with sand were used to assess the NPEO degradation and to enhance the microbial consortia capable of breaking down the complex byproducts, ethanol and fumarate were introduced as co-substrates. Our findings demonstrate the significant potential of the FBR, especially when coupled with fumarate, for enhancing the surfactant degradation. It outperforms the efficiency achieved with ethanol as the primary electron donor, albeit with a higher rate of byproduct production. Microbial community taxonomy and metabolic prediction revealed the high abundance of Geobacter (1.51–31.71%) and Methanobacterium (1.08–13.81%) in non-conductive sand. This may hint a new metabolic interaction and expand our understanding of Direct Interspecies Electron Transfer (DIET) in bioreactors applied to micropollutants degradation. Such an intricate relationship between facultative and anaerobes working together to simultaneously biodegrade the ethoxy and alkyl chains presents a new perspective on NPEO degradation and can potentially be extended to other micropollutants.

Nonylphenol ethoxylate degradation in detergents during shelf time, a new exposure pathway, and a perspective on their substitution.

Detergents are highly produced pollutants with environmental problems like foam generation and toxic effects in biota. Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are efficient, economical, and versatile surfactants, used in detergents for more than 40years due to their detergency capacity. In the environment, NPE biodegrades into the metabolite nonylphenol (NP), classified as an endocrine disruptor. The identification and quantification of 4-NP in a designed detergent and 30 commercially available detergents were performed to prove the degradation of NPE into 4-NP during storage time. This investigation introduces the first evidence of NPE degradation during storage in commercially available detergents, demonstrating a novel exposure pathway in humans that has not been explored before, representing potential human health risks. Therefore, simple, easy, low-cost, and available approaches to remove and substitute NP is paramount. Alkyl polyglucoside (APG) was assessed as a substitute, and the feasibility of this substitution was proven according to physical and chemical properties, cleaning performance, and antimicrobial properties. NPE substitution in detergents is demonstrated as a viable strategy to minimize exposure risks in humans and the environment.

Identification of key degraders for controlling toxicity risks of disguised toxic pollutants with division of labor mechanisms in activated sludge microbiomes: Using nonylphenol ethoxylate as an example

Efficient management of disguised toxic pollutants (DTPs), which can undergo microbial degradation and convert into more toxic substances, necessitates the collaboration of diverse microbial populations in wastewater treatment plants. However, the identification of key bacterial degraders capable of controlling the toxicity risks of DTPs through division of labor mechanisms in activated sludge microbiomes has received limited attention. In this study, we investigated the key degraders capable of controlling the risk of estrogenicity associated with nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPEO), a representative DTP, in textile activated sludge microbiomes. The results of our batch experiments revealed that the transformation of NPEO into NP and subsequent NP degradation were the rate-limiting processes for controlling the risk of estrogenicity, resulting in an inverted V-shaped curve of estrogenicity in water samples during the biodegradation of NPEO by textile activated sludge. By utilizing enrichment sludge microbiomes treated with NPEO or NP as the sole carbon and energy source, a total of 15 bacterial degraders, including Sphingbium, Pseudomonas, Dokdonella, Comamonas, and Hyphomicrobium, were identified as capable of participating in these processes, Among them, Sphingobium and Pseudomonas were the two key degraders that could cooperatively interact in the degradation of NPEO with division of labor mechanisms. Co-culturing Sphingobium and Pseudomonas isolates exhibited a synergistic effect in degrading NPEO and reducing estrogenicity. Our study underscores the potential of the identified functional bacteria for controlling estrogenicity associated with NPEO and provides a methodological framework for identifying key cooperators engaged in labor division, contributing to the management of risks associated with DTPs by leveraging intrinsic microbial metabolic interactions.

Expanded granular sludge bed reactor technology feasibility for removal of nonylphenol ethoxylate in co-digestion of domestic sewage and commercial laundry wastewater: Taxonomic characterization and biogas production

Nonylphenol Ethoxylate (NPEO) is a non-ionic surfactant used worldwide in the formulation of cleaning products. Removal of these compounds from domestic sewage is difficult to achieve. In this study, the degradation of NPEO from the co-digestion of domestic sewage (DS) and commercial laundry wastewater (CLW) was evaluated using a pilot-scale expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor operated for 637 days. In phase I, the reactor was fed with synthetic substrate (SS) – without NPEO, phases II and III with SS plus 3.5 ± 1.0 mgNPEO L−1 and 7.6 ± 2.1 mgNPEO L−1, respectively. Phase IV with SS plus CLW containing 4.0 ± 1.1 mgNPEO L−1, phase V with DS plus CLW and 3.7 ± 1.3 mgNPEO L−1. Nearly 60% of NPEO was biodegraded and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal varied from 90 ± 5% to 97 ± 2% (for up to 573.8 ± 130.1 mgCOD L−1). Spirochaetacea exhibit the greatest relative abundance (from 65.3% to 90.7%) throughout the operation. NPEO addition negatively affected methanogenic activity, such that CH4 yield decreased 91% even at high COD removal. Surprisingly, after 549 days of operation, a CH4 yield of 0.30 ± 0.14 LCH4 gCOD−1 removed was observed.

Potential methanogenic and degradation of nonylphenol ethoxylate from domestic sewage: unravelling the essential roles of nutritional conditions and microbial community

ABSTRACT Nonylphenol ethoxylathe (NPEO) is a non-ionic surfactant of increasing concern, used in the formulation of laundry detergents and is frequently found in aquatic environments. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of yeast extract (YE) and sodium fumarate (SF) in NPEO removal from domestic sewage under anaerobic conditions via central composite rotatable design (CCRD) and response surface methodology (RSM). Experiments were designed by varying concentrations of NPEO (1.6–5.8 mg L−1), YE (131.8–468.2 mg L−1) and SF (97.7–602.3 mg L−1) in batch reactors. SF and YE addition significantly influenced NPEO removal and CH4 production. Optimal values of YE (400 mg L−1) and SF (200 mg L−1) result in removal efficiency of 97% for 5 mg L−1 of NPEO, being mostly removed by biodegradation (86%). Meanwhile COD removal was 95% and methane yield was 134 ± 4 NmLCH4 g−¹CODremoved. The most abundant Bacteria genus identified were Macellibacteroides, Longilinea, Petrimonas and Proteiniphilum, while for Archaea, Methanosaeta and Methanoregula were the genera identified in higher relative abundances in optimized conditions.

Treatment of the High Concentration Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPEOs) Wastewater by Fenton Oxidation Process

The Fenton oxidation process was applied in the treatment of an actual high concentration nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPEOs) wastewater. The effects of H2O2 dosage, molar ratio of H2O2/Fe2+ (Fe2+ dosage), pH value and reaction time on the degradation of NPEOs were investigated. The orthogonal experiment indicated that the order of degree of influence on the COD removal was molar ratio of H2O2/Fe2+, reaction time, dosage of H2O2, and initial pH. The single-factor tests were carried out to determine the optimal conditions, and the results were H2O2 dosage of 76.32 mmol/L, molar ratio of H2O2/Fe2+ of 3, pH value of 5 and reaction time of 2 h. Under the optimum operation conditions, the COD removal efficiency was 85.6% and the effluent could be mixed with other wastewater into the large-scale biological treatment system.

Fate and effects of nonylphenol in the filamentous fungus Penicillium expansum isolated from the bottom sediments of the Gulf of Finland

Abstract Nonylphenol (NP) is the most abundant environmental pollutant that is classified as an endocrine disruptor, and it originates from the degradation of nonylphenol ethoxylates, which are widely used as industrial surfactants. It has been referred to in a list of substances of particular risk to the Baltic Sea, in a list of priority hazardous substances in the Water Frame Directive, and in the 3rd draft Working Document on Sludge, developed by the EU. In this study, the fate and effects of NP in the filamentous fungus Penicillium expansum isolated from the bottom sediments of the coastal zone of the eastern Gulf of Finland were investigated in laboratory experiments. This strain was more tolerant to technical nonylphenol (tNP) compared to other types of aquatic organisms, such as fish, protozoa, and algae. The toxicity concentration values of tNP in Penicillium expansum were EC 50 20 mg L − 1 and ЕС 90 > 100 mg L − 1 . The activity level of hydrolytic enzymes, cellulases and amylases decreased significantly in the tNP treatments. Given the significant role played by terrestrial fungi in the transformation of organic substrate into bottom sediment, such an effect from tNP on fungi could disturb the regulatory mechanisms and balance between the biosynthesis and biodegradation of organic matter in aquatic ecosystems as well as the formation of cenotic relations in aquatic biocenoses. Oxidative stress induced by tNP has been found to increase the synthesis of enzymatic protection factors, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and nonenzymatic factors (melanin-like pigments and extracellular polysaccharides). This research indicated that the malondialdehyde concentration (the biochemical marker of lipid peroxidation) in the cells of the fungus decreased with increasing antioxidation factors. Penicillium expansum was able to decrease the tNP concentration in the culture medium. The removal of tNP was mainly caused by fungal degradation rather than by simple sorption and accumulation in the cells. Because terrestrial fungi play a significant role in the function of the heterotrophic block of bottom sediments and because tNP has become an increasingly persistent toxic organic and endocrine disruptor, these results may be ecologically relevant for aquatic systems. The results from this study demonstrate a potential application of this fungal species for the removal of tNP from the environment.

Synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic activity of ZnO flower and pseudo-sphere: Nonylphenol ethoxylate degradation under UV and solar irradiation

ZnO particles (flower and pseudo sphere) were synthesized via precipitation route and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy, Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Particle size analyzer and UV–visible techniques. The photocatalytic activities (PCA) of ZnO flower (uncalcined) and pseudo-sphere (calcined) were evaluated by degrading nonylphenol ethoxylate-9 (NP9EO) under UV and solar irradiation. The process variables i.e., catalyst dose, calcination temperature, H2O2 concentration, pH and UV/solar light exposure were investigated and under optimum conditions of process variables, paper, textile and leather industries effluents were also treated. Calcination at high temperature affected the morphology of ZnO particles. Both ZnO flower and pseudo-sphere degraded NP9EO and pollutants in industrial wastewater efficiently under both UV and solar irradiation. Maximum NP9EO degradation was achieved at 2.5 g/L catalyst dose, high calcination temperature, 4% H2O2 concentration, 6 pH, 110 UV exposure and 12 h solar light exposure. Results reveal that ZnO is efficient photo-catalyst and could be used under solar irradiation for photocatalytic application by tuning the band gap.

TiO2 thick films supported on stainless steel foams and their photoactivity in the nonylphenol ethoxylate mineralization

The main interest in employing a structured catalyst for water treatment processes is to avoid an extra recovering-step of the powder catalyst after concluding the treatment. For this purpose, TiO2 powder (Degussa P25) was immobilized onto metallic foam walls (TiO2-foam) through the washcoating method and its photocatalytic activity was evaluated in the degradation of nonylphenol ethoxylate (NP4EO), which is considered an endocrine disrupter. The morphological and physicochemical characteristics of TiO2 films were studied by X-ray Diffraction, Laser Raman Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy.The fast and easy washcoating method used in this work allowed the immobilization of the TiO2 powder onto a relatively inexpensive metallic substrate. The TiO2 layer was uniformly distributed, having a high adherence to the metallic foam walls, which were previously submitted to a passivation treatment. This pre-treatment hindered a further migration of cations from the foam core to the titania film and favored the subsequent film anchorage. Moreover, the catalytic film so obtained maintained the anatase and rutile phases with their original proportions, preserving the properties of the TiO2 powder. The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2-foam was similar to that of a commercial catalyst (TiO2–Ti mesh), i.e. both reduced the TOC of the NP4EO solution by about 91%, showing similar reaction kinetics and overall quantum yield (Фoverall). These results demonstrate that by means of the method under study, TiO2 can be successfully immobilized without decreasing its photocatalytic activity. These catalysts may be applied in water/wastewater treatment, reducing the process stages and the overall cost of the procedure.

Production of mono- and di-carboxylated polyethylene glycols as a factor obstacle to the successful ozonation-assisted biodegradation of ethoxylated compounds

Ozonation is believed to improve the biodegradability of organic compounds. In the present study, degradation of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs) was monitored in hybrid treatment systems consisting of ozonation and microbial degradation processes. We found that ozonation of NPEOs decreased, rather than increased, the biodegradability under certain conditions. The timing of ozonation was a definitive factor in determining whether ozonation increased or decreased the biodegradation rates of NPEOs. Initial ozonation of NPEOs prior to biodegradation reduced the rate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal during the subsequent 14d of biodegradation, whereas intermediate ozonation at the 9th day of biodegradation improved subsequent DOC removal during 14d of NPEO biodegradation. Furthermore, reduction of DOC removal was also observed, when initial ozonation prior to biodegradation was subjected to cetyl alcohol ethoxylates. The production of less biodegradable intermediates, such as mono- and dicarboxylated polyethylene glycols (MCPEGs and DCPEGs), was responsible for the negative effect of ozonation on biodegradability of NPEOs. DCPEGs and MCPEGs were produced by biodegradation of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) that were ozonolysis products of the NPEOs, and the biodegradability of DCPEGs and MCPEGs was less than that of the precursor PEGs. The results indicate that, if the target chemicals contain ethoxy chains, production of PEGs may be one of the important factors when ozonation is considered.

Fenton Oxidation Kinetics and Intermediates of Nonylphenol Ethoxylates.

Removal of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs) in aqueous solution by Fenton oxidation process was studied in a laboratory-scale batch reactor. Operating parameters, including initial pH temperature, hydrogen peroxide, and ferrous ion dosage, were thoroughly investigated. Maximum NPEOs reduction of 84% was achieved within 6 min, under an initial pH of 3.0, 25°C, an H2O2 dosage of 9.74×10-3 M, and a molar ratio of [H2O2]/[Fe2+] of 3. A modified pseudo-first-order kinetic model was found to well represent experimental results. Correlations of reaction rate constants and operational parameters were established based on experimental data. Results indicated that the Fenton oxidation rate and removal efficiency were more dependent on the dosage of H2O2 than Fe2+, and the apparent activation energy (ΔE) was 17.5 kJ/mol. High-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatograph mass spectrometer analytical results indicated degradation of NPEOs obtained within the first 2 min stepwise occurred by ethoxyl (EO) unit shortening. Long-chain NPEOs mixture demonstrated a higher degradation rate than shorter-chain ones. Nonylphenol (NP), short-chain NPEOs, and NP carboxyethoxylates were identified as the primary intermediates, which were mostly further degraded.

In utero and neonate exposure to nonylphenol develops hyperadrenalism and metabolic syndrome later in life. I. First generation rats (F1)

Nonylphenol (NP) is an endocrine disruptor (ENDR). It is a chemical associated with the production and degradation of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE). NPE is widely used as nonionic surfactants. Previously, we observed that NP increased the production of corticosterone and aldosterone from zona fasciculata-reticularis, and zona glomerulosa cells, respectively. By the “fetal origins adult diseases” (Barker hypothesis), we examined the possible impact of NP exposure during developmental (in utero and neonatal) period with focus on disturbed adrenal function and related hyperadrenal syndrome, i.e. Cushings syndrome/metabolic syndrome. In this study, female rats drink NP water during pregnancy and lactation conferred F1 generation: (1) increase the corticosterone, aldosterone concentration in plasma; (2) increase 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) activity in liver and adipose tissue; (3) increase aldosterone synthase activity in adrenal for adult offspring. Furthermore, it can increase body weight, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) concentration in plasma, 11β-HSD1 protein expression in liver, steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR) protein expression and 11β-hydroxylase activity in adrenal for male adult offspring. In summary, NP exposure during developmental period bestowed F1 generation with hyperadrenalism and its consequence of metabolic syndrome.

Isolation of phylogenetically diverse nonylphenol ethoxylate-degrading bacteria and characterization of their corresponding biotransformation pathways

Most nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPEO)-degrading isolates have been assigned to γ- Proteobacteria, which is different from the results acquired by using molecular ecological techniques. To better understand the environmental fate of NPEOs, bacterial isolation strategy characterized by the use of gellan gum as a gelling reagent and a low concentration of target carbon source were used to isolate phylogenetically diverse NPEO-degrading bacteria from activated sludge, and the biotransformation pathways of the isolates were investigated. Eight NPEO-degrading isolates with high diversity were acquired, which were distributed among seven different genera: Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Sphingobium, Cupriavidus, Ralstonia, Achromobacter and Staphylococcus. The latter five genera have never been reported to be able to degrade NPEOs. Three biotransformation pathways of NPEOs were observed in the eight stains. Six strains belonging to α, β and γ classes of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes phylum degraded NPEOs by initially shortening the EO chain and then oxidizing the terminal alcohol of the shortened NPEOs to the corresponding nonylphenoxy carboxylates (NPECs), which could explain most of the reported observations for the degradation of NPEOs in environment. An isolate (NP42a) belonging to the genus Sphingomonas degraded NPEOs through a non-oxidative pathway, with nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP 1EO) as the dominant product. Another isolate (NP47a) belonging to the genus Ralstonia degraded NPEOs by oxidizing the EO chain directly without the formation of short chain products.

Evaluation of biodegradation of nonylphenol ethoxylate and lignin by combining toxicity assessment and chemical characterization

The aerobic biodegradation of commercial nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE) mixture and alkali lignin was studied using the OECD headspace test accompanied by the simultaneous measurement of ecotoxicity directly from the biodegradation liquors and by the follow-up of the chemical composition of the studied chemicals. NPE degradation was dependent on the inoculum source: approximately 40% of NPE was mineralized into CO 2 during the 4-week experiment when inoculum from Helsinki City wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was used, and only 12% was mineralized when inoculum from Jyväskylä City WWTP was used. Chemical analyses revealed a shift in the ethoxylate chain length from longer to shorter soon after the beginning of the NPE biodegradation tests. At the same time also toxicity (reverse electron transport assay, RET) and estrogenic activity (human estrogen receptor yeast) measured directly from the biodegradation liquors decreased. In case of alkali lignin, approximately 11% was mineralized in the test and chemical analysis showed in maximum a 30% decrease in lignin concentration. Toxicity of lignin biodegradation liquors started to decrease in the beginning of the test, but became more toxic towards the end of the test again. Especially RET assay proved to be sensitive enough for measuring toxicity changes directly from biodegradation liquors, although a concentrating treatment of the liquors is recommended for a more detailed characterization and identification of toxic metabolites.

Biotransformation of nonylphenol ethoxylates during sewage treatment under anaerobic and aerobic conditions

Biotransformation of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs) during continuous anaerobic sewage treatment was compared with the aerobic treatment of sewage spiked with 23 μmol/L technical NPEOs over a period of 90 d. Immediate degradation of NPEOs was observed under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions, indicating that the enzymes and bacteria required for NPEO degradation existed abundantly in both aerobic and anaerobic sludge. Both treatments achieved high removal (> 92%) of the spiked NPEO9 mixture. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis showed that short-chain NPEOs (NPEO1–NPEO3) accumulated in anaerobic (2.01–2.56 μmol/L) and aerobic (1.62–2.03 μmol/L) effluents, with nonylphenol (NP) (0.24–0.31 μmol/L) as another group of metabolites in the anaerobic effluent, and nonylphenoxy carboxylates (NPECs) (2.79–3.30 μmol/L) in the aerobic effluent. Significant accumulation of NP in the anaerobic sludge and NPEO1–3 in the sludge of two reactors was observed. These results indicated that it was difficult to control these harmful metabolites in the conventional treatment processes. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis profiles of sludge samples support the speculation that the NPEO degradation bacteria might be the dominant indigenous species.

Degradation behaviors of nonylphenol ethoxylates by isolated bacteria using improved isolation method

Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPEO)-degrading bacteria were isolated from activated sludge using an improved isolation method, and the corresponding degradation behaviours were investigated. Eight NPEO-degrading strains distributed in genera Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Sphingobium, Cupriavidus, Ralstonia, Achromobacter, and Staphylococcus were acquired. The latter five genera have never been reported for the degradation of NPEOs. Four degradation patterns were observed for the eight pure strains. In pattern A, NPEOs were converted to short-chain NPEOs and carboxylated products, while in pattern B, lower ethoxylated oligomers appeared. Nonylphenol monoethoxylate was the main product in pattern C, while in pattern D ethoxylated units was oxidized but not shortened. Pattern C and D have not yet been reported.

Selection and characterization of aerobic bacteria capable of degrading commercial mixtures of low-ethoxylated nonylphenols

Isolation and characterization of new bacterial strains capable of degrading nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPnEO) with a low ethoxylation degree, which are particularly recalcitrant to biodegradation. Seven aerobic bacterial strains were isolated from activated sludges derived from an Italian plant receiving NPnEO-contaminated wastewaters after enrichment with a low-ethoxylated NPnEO mixture. On the basis of 16S rDNA sequence, the strains were positioned into five genera: Ochrobactrum, Castellaniella, Variovorax, Pseudomonas and Psychrobacter. Their degradation capabilities have been evaluated on two commercial mixtures, i.e. Igepal CO-210 and Igepal CO-520, the former rich in low ethoxylated congeners and the latter containing a broader spectrum of NPnEO, and on 4-n-nonylphenol (NP). The strains degraded Igepal CO-210, Igepal CO-520 and 4-n-NP all applied at the initial concentration of 100 mg l(-1), by 35-75%, 35-90% and 15-25%, respectively, after 25 days of incubation. Some of the isolated strains, in particular the Pseudomonas strains BCb12/1 and BCb12/3, showed interesting degradation capabilities towards low ethoxylated NPnEO congeners maintaining high cell vitality. Increased knowledge of bacteria involved in NPnEO degradation and the possibility of using the isolated strains in tailored process for a tertiary biological treatment of effluents of wastewater treatment plants.

Fate of Tolyltriazoles and Nonylphenol Ethoxylates in Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactors

The fate of tolyltriazoles, nonylphenol and nonlyphenol ethoxylates during anaerobic treatment of ethylene glycol (EG) based wastewater during batch or continuous upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors was investigated. Equilibrium sorption studies indicated that there was minimal sorption of benzotriazole (BT), 5-methyl-1 H-benzotriazole (MeBT), and 5,6-dimethyl-1 H-benzotriazole (DiMeBT) to anaerobic granules. Nonylphenol (NP), a reported biodegradation product of NP ethoxylates, had a higher sorption capacity to anaerobic biomass and was described by the Freundlich isotherm. Batch serum bottle EG degradation experiments indicated that BT, MeBT, DiMeBT, and the nonionic NP ethoxylate surfactant Tergitol NP-4 had no significant effects on acidogenesis and methanogenesis at the concentration levels studied. Significant inhibition of acetoclastic activity was observed for the biodegradation intermediate NP at 100 mg/L, with acetic acid consumption rate at 38% of the controls. No evidence for anaerobic degradation of benzotriazole and its derivatives was observed for both batch and continuously fed anaerobic systems. Continuously fed anaerobic experiments provided evidence that indicated that anaerobic degradation of nonylphenol ethoxylates and the biodegradation intermediate NP occurred.

LC-MS-(MS) determination of oxidative degradation products of nonylphenol ethoxylates, carboxylates and nonylphenols in water

A commercial blend of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs) was chosen as representative for non-ionic polyethoxylated surfactants to study the oxidative degradation of this class of surfactants in water using ozonation as well as electron beam irradiation with and without the addition of ozone as treatment processes. The electron beam irradiation processes applied represent so-called Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs); the combined ozone/electron beam irradiation is, moreover, the most powerful AOP which can be applied in aqueous systems. It was found that both ozonation and the two AOPs applied were able to decompose not only the NPEOs but also the polyethyleneglycoles (PEGs) formed as by-products from NPEO degradation to residual concentrations below the limit of detection. Moreover, the treatment processes were also used to study the oxidative degradation of nonylphenoxy acetic acid (NPEC) and of nonylphenol (NP) which are formed as by-products from biodegradation of NPEOs.
