Taking leftover prescribed antibiotics without consulting a healthcare professional is problematic for the efficacy, safety, and antibiotic stewardship. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of adult patients in English and Spanish between January 2020 and June 2021 in six safety-net primary care clinics and two private emergency departments. We assessed the reasons for stopping prescribed antibiotics early and what was done with the leftover antibiotics. Additionally, we determined 1) prior leftover antibiotic use, 2) intention for future use of leftover antibiotics, and 3) sociodemographic factors. Of 564 survey respondents (median age of 51), 45% (251/564) reported a history of stopping antibiotics early, with 171/409 (42%) from safety net and 80/155 (52%) from the private clinics. The most common reason for stopping prescribed antibiotics early was "because you felt better" (194/251, 77%). Among survey participants, prior use of leftover antibiotics was reported by 149/564 (26%) and intention for future use of leftover antibiotics was reported by 284/564 (51%). In addition, higher education was associated with a higher likelihood of prior leftover use. Intention for future use of leftover antibiotics was more likely for those with transportation or language barriers to medical care and less likely for respondents with private insurance. Stopping prescribed antibiotics early was mostly ascribed to feeling better, and saving remaining antibiotics for future use was commonly reported. To curb nonprescription antibiotic use, all facets of the leftover antibiotic use continuum, from overprescribing to hoarding, need to be addressed.

'You never know when you will need an antibiotic': A qualitative study of structural barriers and cultural assumptions in antibiotic misuse among immigrants in the United States.

The use of nonprescribed antibiotics increases the risk of antibiotic resistance, which is a primary public health concern of the 21st century. This study explores structural and cultural determinants of antibiotic misuse among immigrants living in the United States who arrived from home countries with easier access to antibiotics. Adopting a qualitative approach, we interviewed 34 immigrants living in the United States and who had traveled back to their home countries within 1year of the interview. We followed the steps of constructive grounded theory to analyze the data. We found two primary influences of immigrants' use of nonprescribed antibiotics. The first was structural barriers to health care access in the host country, including insurance coverage, cost of an emergency department visit, cost of missing a paid day of work, complexity of the healthcare system, and communication issues with health care providers. The second was participants' cultural assumptions, including their experiences of antibiotics use, beliefs about antibiotics, a habit of self-medication, and uncertainty about future medical needs. This study informs policymakers concerned with combating antibiotic resistance. Promoting antibiotic stewardship among immigrants from countries with lax antibiotic-prescribing practices and improving access to appropriate channels for preventative and same-day care may reduce the inappropriate use of antibiotics.

Acculturation and Subjective Norms Impact Non-Prescription Antibiotic Use among Hispanic Patients in the United States.

Using antibiotics without medical guidance (non-prescription antibiotic use) may contribute to antimicrobial resistance. Hispanic individuals are a growing demographic group in the United States (US) with a high prevalence of non-prescription antibiotic use. We investigated the effects of acculturation and subjective norms on Hispanic individuals' intentions to use antibiotics without a prescription from the following sources: (1) markets in the United States (not legal), (2) other countries (abroad), (3) leftovers from previous prescriptions, and (4) friends/relatives. We surveyed self-identified Hispanic outpatients in eight clinics from January 2020 to June 2021 using the previously validated Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (SASH). Of the 263 patients surveyed, 47% reported previous non-prescription use, and 54% expressed intention to use non-prescription antibiotics if feeling sick. Individuals with lower acculturation (Spanish-speaking preferences) expressed greater intentions to use antibiotics from abroad and from any source. Individuals with more friends/relatives who obtain antibiotics abroad were over 2.5 times more likely to intend to use non-prescription antibiotics from friends/relatives (p = 0.034). Other predictors of intention to use non-prescription antibiotics included high costs of doctor visits and perceived language barriers in the clinic. Antibiotic stewardship interventions in Hispanic communities in the United States should consider the sociocultural and healthcare barriers influencing non-prescription use and promote language-concordant healthcare.

Inappropriate Use of Antibiotics in the General Population

Background: Antibiotic resistance is a significant and growing threat to global health. While the vast majority of antimicrobial use occurs in communities where antibiotics are available without a prescription, we were unable to locate any studies examining community-level factors that influence the inappropriate use of antibiotics in settings where nonprescription antibiotic use is common. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted from 1 April to 5 May 2019 and consisted of in-depth, semi-structured interviews with adult household heads recruited via purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Participants with diverse educational and medical backgrounds were chosen. We utilized a thematic analysis methodology to investigate the community's knowledge and usage of antibiotics in the sampled population. Results: Interviews were conducted with 18 participants with a median age of 35 years. The majority were female (77.7%), had completed at least secondary school (83.4%), and were unemployed (61.1%). We discovered that participants were familiar with the term "antibiotics" but had limited understanding of the indications and hazards of antibiotics, including the risk of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic misuse was prevalent, as was self-medication with non-prescribed medications for a variety of non-indicated conditions, such as menstruation. The most frequently reported reason for not visiting a health facility for appropriate health care was limited income. Conclusion: Lack of adequate knowledge of antibiotic use, indications, and risks, prevalent self-medication, and financial barriers to accessing appropriate health care all contribute to pervasive inappropriate antibiotic use. Identifying nonprescription antibiotic users with screening questions in a primary care setting

Background: Antibiotic use without a prescription (nonprescription use) leads to antibiotic overuse, with negative consequences for patient and public health. We studied whether screening patients for prior nonprescription antibiotic use in the past 12 months predicted their intentions to use them in the future. Methods: A survey asking respondents about prior and intended nonprescription antibiotic use was performed between January 2020 and June 2021 among patients in waiting rooms of 6 public clinics and 2 private emergency departments in economically and socially diverse urban and suburban areas. Respondents were classified as prior nonprescription users if they reported previously taking oral antibiotics without contacting a doctor, dentist, or nurse. Intended use was defined as answering “yes” or “maybe” to the question, “Would you use antibiotics without contacting a doctor, nurse, or dentist?” We calculated the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive value (PPV and NPV) of prior nonprescription antibiotic use in the past 12 months for future intended nonprescription use. Bayes PPV and NPV were also calculated, considering the prevalence of nonprescription antibiotic use (24.8%) in our study. Results: Of the 564 patients surveyed, the median age was 51 years (SD, 19–92), with 72% of patients identifying as female. Most were from the public healthcare system (72.5%). Most respondents identified as Hispanic or Latino(a) (47%) or African American (33%), and 57% received Medicaid or the county financial assistance program. Prior nonprescription use was reported by 246 (43%) of 564 individuals, with 91 (16%) reporting nonprescription use within the previous 12 months. Intention to use nonprescription antibiotics was reported by 140 participants (25%). The sensitivity and specificity of prior nonprescription use in the past 12 months to predict the intention to use nonprescription antibiotics in the future were 75.9% (95% CI, 65.3–84.6) and 91.4% (95% CI, 87.8–94.2), respectively. After the Bayes’ adjustment, the PPV and NPV of prior use to predict future intention were 74.5% (95% CI, 66.7–80.9) and 92.0% (95% CI, 88.7–94.4) (Table 1). Conclusions: These results show that prior nonprescription antibiotic use in the past 12 months predicted the intention to use nonprescription antibiotics in the future (PPV of 75%). Perspectives on nonprescription antibiotic use among Hispanic patients in the Houston metroplex: A qualitative study

Background: Nonprescription antibiotic use includes taking an antibiotic without medical guidance (eg, leftover antibiotics, antibiotics from friends or relatives, or antibiotics purchased without a prescription). Nonprescription use contributes to antimicrobial resistance, adverse drug reactions, interactions, and superinfections such as Clostridioides difficile colitis. Qualitative studies exploring perspectives regarding nonprescription use among Hispanic patients are lacking. We used the Kilbourne Framework for Advancing Health Disparities Research to identify factors influencing Hispanic patients’ nonprescription use and to organize our findings. Methods: Our study includes Hispanic primary-care clinic patients with different types of health coverage in the Houston metroplex who endorsed nonprescription use in a previous quantitative survey. Semistructured interviews explored the factors promoting nonprescription use in Hispanic adults. Interviews were conducted remotely, in English or Spanish, between May 2020 and October 2021. We used inductive coding and thematic analysis to identify the factors and motives for nonprescription use. Results: Of the 35 Hispanic participants surveyed, 69% were female and between the ages of 27 and 66. All participants had some form of healthcare coverage (eg, Medicare or private insurance, Medicaid, or the county financial assistance program). Participants reported obtaining antibiotics from their own leftover prescriptions and through trusted persons (eg, herbalists, pharmacists, friends/relatives, and others), buying them under the counter in US markets, and purchasing them without a prescription outside the United States. Thematic analysis revealed the factors contributing to nonprescription use (Fig. 1). Themes included beliefs that the ‘doctor visit was unnecessary,’ ‘limited direct access to healthcare’ in the United States (due to limited insurance coverage, high costs of the doctor’s visits and medications, and long clinic wait times), ‘more open indirect access to healthcare’ abroad and under the counter in the United States, and communication difficulties (eg, language barriers with clinicians, perceived staff rudeness, and gaps in health literacy). Figure 2 shows representative quotes across thematic domains. Participants expressed having confidence in medical recommendations from pharmacists and trusted community members in their social networks. Conclusions: Antibiotic stewardship interventions that include pharmacist-driven patient education regarding appropriate antibiotic use may decrease nonprescription antibiotic use in Hispanic communities. Additionally, improving access to care while addressing communication barriers and cultural competency in clinics may improve primary care delivery and reduce potentially unsafe antibiotic use.Disclosure: None

Patient, healthcare system, and clinical encounter factors contribute to non-prescription use in Hispanic communities. Antibiotic stewardship interventions that involve pharmacists and trusted persons, improve access to care, and address communication barriers and cultural competency in the clinic may help reduce non-prescription use in these communities.

Antibiotic use without a Prescription: A multi-site Survey of Patient, Health System, and Encounter Characteristics.

Use of antibiotics without a prescription is potentially unsafe and may increase the risk of antimicrobial resistance. We evaluated the effect of patient, health system, and clinical encounter factors on intention to use antibiotics without a prescription: (1) purchased in the United States (U.S.), (2) obtained from friends or relatives, (3) purchased abroad, or 4) from any of these sources. Survey was performed January 2020 - June 2021 in six publicly-funded primary care clinics and two private emergency departments in Texas, U.S. Participants included adult patients visiting one of the clinical settings. Non-prescription use was defined as use of antibiotics without a prescription, and intended use was professed intention for future non-prescription antibiotic use. Of 564 survey respondents (33% Black and 47% Hispanic or Latino), 246 (43.6%) reported prior use of antibiotics without a prescription, and 177 (31.4%) reported intent to use antibiotics without a prescription. If feeling sick, respondents endorsed that they would take antibiotics: obtained from friends/relatives (22.3% of 564), purchased in the U.S. without a prescription (19.1%), or purchased abroad without a prescription (17.9%). Younger age, lack of health insurance and a perceived high cost of doctor visits were predictors of intended use of non-prescription antibiotics from any of the source. Other predictors of intended use were lack of transportation for medical appointments, language barrier to medical care, Hispanic or Latino ethnicity and being interviewed in Spanish. Patients without health insurance who report a financial barrier to care are likely to pursue more dangerous non-prescription antimicrobials. This is a harm of the fragmented, expensive healthcare system that may drive increasing antimicrobial resistance and patient harm.

Prevalence and Predictors of Using Antibiotics without a Prescription in a Pediatric Population in the United States.

Non-prescription antibiotic use (using antibiotics without clinical guidance) increases the risk of the development of antibiotic resistance, adverse drug reactions, and other potential patient harm. Few studies have explored non-prescription use in children in the U.S. From January 2021 to April 2022, a diverse sample of caregivers of children under 18 years were surveyed in English and Spanish at two safety net clinics in Texas. We assessed the prevalence of antibiotic use in children in the previous 12 months, storage of antimicrobials, and intended use of non-prescription antibiotics (professed intention for future non-prescription antibiotic use). We also measured sociodemographic factors, types of antibiotics used, and symptoms that trigger non-prescription use. The response rate was 82%, and 17% were surveyed in Spanish. Of 322 participants surveyed, three Spanish-speaking caregivers reported giving non-prescription antibiotics to their child in the previous 12 months. Approximately 21% (n = 69) reported storing antimicrobials at home, specifically amoxicillin (n = 52), clindamycin (n = 10), cephalexin (n = 5), penicillin (n = 3), and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (n = 3). Nearly 15% (n = 46) reported intention to give non-prescription antibiotics to their children. Younger caregiver age was associated with storage and intended use of non-prescription antibiotics. Our findings will guide the development of an educational intervention to decrease non-prescription antibiotic use.

Healthcare System Distrust and Non-Prescription Antibiotic Use: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Adult Antibiotic Users.

Antibiotic resistance is a major public health concern driven by antibiotic overuse. Antibiotic stewardship programs are often limited to clinical settings and do little to address non-prescription antibiotic use in community settings. This study investigates the association between non-prescription antibiotic use and healthcare system distrust in the United States and Mexico. An online survey was deployed in the United States and Mexico with enhanced sampling through in-person recruiting in the border region. Non-prescription antibiotic use was defined as having bought or borrowed non-prescription oral or injectable antibiotics within the last 3 years. The survey included a previously validated 10-item scale to measure healthcare system distrust. Logistic regression was used to model the use of non-prescription antibiotics by the level of healthcare system distrust, adjusted for demographic characteristics and antibiotic knowledge. In total, 568 survey participants were included in the analysis, 48.6% of whom had used non-prescription oral or injectable antibiotics in the last 3 years. In the fully adjusted regression model, the odds of using non-prescription antibiotics were 3.2 (95% CI: 1.8, 6.1) times higher for those in the highest distrust quartile versus the lowest. These findings underscore the importance of community-based antibiotic stewardship and suggest that these programs are particularly critical for communities with high levels of healthcare system distrust.

1770. Effects of Acculturation and Social Norms on Intention to use Antibiotics without a Prescription among Hispanic or Latino individuals

Abstract Background The use of antibiotics obtained without a prescription (non-prescription use) in the United States (U.S.) may contribute to antimicrobial resistance. We hypothesized that among Hispanic/Latino patients, the intention to use non-prescription antibiotics would be associated with: [1] lower acculturation (preference to socialize with Hispanic/Latinos) and [2] having friends or relatives who use antibiotics without contacting a doctor (social norms). Methods We conducted a survey on the factors that impact Hispanic/Latino patients’ decisions to use non-prescription antibiotics in safety-net primary care clinics and private emergency departments in the greater Houston, Texas area between January 2020 and June 2021. Surveys were read to patients in English or Spanish and queried patient, health system, and clinical encounter factors. Results Of 263 Hispanic/Latino patients, 59% completed the survey in Spanish and 41% in English (Table 1). Overall, 47% reported previous non-prescription antibiotic use, and 36% professed intention to hypothetically obtain and use non-prescription antibiotics, if feeling sick, from one or more of three sources (bought without a prescription in the U. S., from another country, and from friends or relatives). Lack of health insurance, being surveyed in Spanish, having friends or relatives who use antibiotics without consulting a doctor, and high cost of doctor visits were predictors of intent to use antibiotics bought without a prescription in the U.S. (Table 2). Predictors of intent to use non-prescription antibiotics from other countries included lower acculturation scores (preferring to socialize with Hispanics/Latinos), younger age, having friends or relatives who use antibiotics without consulting a doctor, and reported language barriers to medical appointments. Predictors of intent to use antibiotics from friends and relatives included having friends or relatives who use antibiotics without consulting a doctor, and high cost of doctor visits. Conclusion Interventions aimed at reducing non-prescription use in the Hispanic/Latino community should focus on ensuring affordable language concordant healthcare and promoting antibiotic stewardship as a social norm. 1574. Patient, Health System, and Clinical Encounter Characteristics Associated with Use Of Antibiotics Without A Prescription In The United States

Abstract Background Use of antibiotics without a prescription (purchased in the United States (U.S.), purchased in other countries, or obtained from friends and relatives) is potentially unsafe and may increase the global risk of antimicrobial resistance. We evaluated the effect of patient, health system, and clinical encounter factors on intention to use antibiotics without a prescription. Methods Waiting room survey conducted from January 2020 and March 2021 in three continuity and three same-day public primary care clinics and two private emergency departments. Non-prescription use was defined as the consumption of antibiotics not prescribed for the individual’s current condition. Intended use was defined as professed intention to take antibiotics if feeling sick, without contacting a doctor, nurse, or clinic, in any of the following situations: 1) buying antibiotics without a prescription in the U.S., 2) buying antibiotics without a prescription in another country, and 3) getting antibiotics from friends or relatives. The effect of patient, health care system, and clinical encounter factors were studied using multivariate logistic regression. Results Of the 564 respondents, 247 (43.8%) reported prior use of non-prescription antibiotics; half of these instances involved penicillins (mostly amoxicillin). Overall, 177 (31.4%) of the respondents intended to use antibiotics without a prescription from one of the three sources (Figure 1). Younger age, lack of health insurance and high cost of doctor visits were predictors of intention to buy antibiotics without a prescription in the U.S. (Table 1). Predictors of intention to buy antibiotics without a prescription from other countries included younger age, being interviewed in Spanish, and reporting that a language barrier is a major problem for medical appointments. Lack of health insurance and high cost of physician visits were associated with the intention to use antibiotics obtained from relatives or friends. Conclusion Interventions aimed at reducing non-prescription antibiotic use should focus on addressing language barriers, ensuring health insurance coverage, and reducing financial barriers to primary care visits. Pre-Visit Use of Non-Prescribed Antibiotics among Child Patients in China: Prevalence, Predictors, and Association with Physicians' Prescribing of Antibiotics at Medical Visits.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the most serious global public health crises. Inappropriate use of antibiotics is an important contributor. Using a cross-sectional survey, we recruited 3056 caregivers from 21 provinces in China to complete a questionnaire pertaining to their most recent medical visits for children's acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) symptoms in October 2013. The findings show that the prevalence of caregivers giving children non-prescribed antibiotics before their medical visit was as high as 38%. Caring for an older child and having lower educational attainment increased the likelihood of self-medication with antibiotics; among Chinese residential areas, caregivers living in tier 2 urban districts were most likely to administer non-prescribed antibiotics before their visit. Physicians' prescribing of antibiotics was significantly associated with caregivers' self-reported pre-visit use of non-prescribed antibiotics. Misuse should be addressed by regulating the sale of antibiotics and improving communication at medical consultations.

Non-prescribed antibiotic use for children at community levels in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BackgroundNon-prescribed antibiotic use is an emerging risky practice around the globe. An inappropriate use involving nonprescription access is one cause of the rapid increase in antibiotic resistance. Children commonly encounter many self-limiting illnesses for which they frequently use antibiotics without prescription. However, no specific and conclusive evidence exists to inform actions against this unsafe practice. We thus aimed to estimate the pooled proportion of non-prescribed antibiotic use for children at community levels in low- and middle-income countries.MethodsA systematic search of records was conducted from PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL, and Google scholar. Eligible English-language publications were original articles which reported on community-based non-prescribed antibiotic use for children and conducted in low- and middle-income countries. Study features and the number of antibiotics used without prescriptions were extracted and pooled for effect sizes employing a random-effects model. The pooled proportion of non-prescribed antibiotic use was estimated as a percentage.ResultsIn this analysis, we included a total of 39 articles consisting of 40,450 participants. Of these, 16,315 participants used non-prescribed antibiotics. The pooled percentage for this use of non-prescribed antibiotics was 45% (95% CI: 40–50%). The estimate was considerably higher in studies involving simulated patient methods (56%; 95% CI: 49–62%) than those studies with community surveys (40%; 95% CI: 34–46%) (P = 0.001). It was also varied by the recall period of antibiotics use—56% (95% CI: 50–62%) for instantly observed practice, 36% (95% CI: 22–50%) for within two week recall, 35% (95% CI: 26–45%) for 1–6 months recall, and 46% (95% CI: 37–54%) for more than six months recall (P = 0.001). Primary access points for the non-prescribed antibiotic uses were retail drug outlets.ConclusionsWe found that nearly half of the antibiotics used for children in community settings were without prescriptions. For these unsafe practices, caregivers accessed antibiotics mainly from drug outlets. Non-prescription acquisition of antibiotics: Prevalence, motives, pathways and explanatory factors in the Swedish population.

Prior studies indicate prevalence of unregulated non-prescription use of antibiotics also in the northern European countries. The aim of this study is to investigate the extent to which antibiotics are acquired without prescription in Sweden, and people's attitudes and motives linked to this practice. We use data from an online survey of a representative sample of the Swedish general population which included questions about respondents' antibiotic use, attitudes towards antibiotics, health care contacts, self-rated health and trust in health care. We also asked about their reason for obtaining/not obtaining antibiotics without a prescription. The results show that, in the last five years, 2,3% of the respondents had acquired antibiotics in other ways than from a Swedish physician having issued a prescription, and 4,3% reported that they are likely to do so in the future. We also show that the two most important reasons for non-prescription acquisition were physicians' refusal to prescribe antibiotics followed by travel abroad. The most important reason for not obtaining antibiotics without a prescription was to not contribute to antibiotic resistance. Using logistic regression, we show that non-prescription acquisition of antibiotics, and the intention to engage in this practice in the future, are strongly associated with low trust in health care.

A qualitative study on community use of antibiotics in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BackgroundResistance to antibiotics is an increasing and major threat to global health. While the large majority of antimicrobial use occurs in the community where antibiotics are available without prescription, we did not find any studies investigating community-level factors influencing the inappropriate use of antibiotics in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where non-prescription antibiotic use is prevalent.MethodsThis qualitative study was conducted from April 1st 2019 to May 5th 2019 and consisting of in-depth semi-structured interviews, utilizing purposive and snowball sampling schemes to recruit adult heads of households in the Pakadjuma slum, in Kinshasa, DRC. Participants with differing medical and educational backgrounds were selected. We employed a thematic analysis approach to explore community knowledge and use of antibiotics in the sampled population.ResultsA total of 18 participants with a median age of 35 years were interviewed. The majority was female (77.7%), had at least a secondary education (83.4%), and unemployed (61.1%). We found that participants were familiar with the term “antibiotics”, but had limited knowledge of the indications and risks of antibiotics, including the risk of antibiotic resistance. Inappropriate use of antibiotics was common and there was frequent self-medication of non-prescribed medicines for a range of non-indicated conditions such as menstruation. Having limited income was the most commonly reported reason for not visiting a health facility for appropriate health care.ConclusionInappropriate use of antibiotics is a widespread practice and is influenced by lack of adequate knowledge of antibiotic use, indications and risks, prevalent self-medication, and financial barriers to accessing appropriate health care. There is need for both community education as well as structural interventions addressing poverty in order to reduce the inappropriate use of antibiotics in the Pakadjuma slum in Kinshasa.

Non-Prescription Antibiotics Use and Associated Factors Among Drug Retail Outlets in Ambo, Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

PurposeTo assess the non-prescription use of antibiotics and associated factors in Ambo Town, West Shoa, Oromia, Ethiopia.MethodsAn institutional-based cross-sectional study design supported with the qualitative study was conducted in Ambo Town from February 1 to March 1, 2020. Data were collected using a pretested semi-structured questionnaire and in-depth interview guide questions. Simple random sampling was used to select retail outlets and systematic random sampling to select study participants. The data analysis was done using SPSS and univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with non-prescription use of antibiotics. Thematic framework analysis was applied for the qualitative data.ResultsFrom the 421 study sample, a total of 399 participants were interviewed with a 94.8% response rate. Among the study participants, 214 (53.6) were males, 228 (57.1%) were married, 191 (47.9%) were orthodox by religion, and 343 (86%) were Oromo by ethnicity. One hundred seventy-two (43.1%; 95% CI: 38.6, 48.1) of the participants had used non-prescribed antibiotics. Being male [AOR=2.21 95% CI: 1.276, 3.835], residing in rural area [AOR=3.659, 95% CI: 1.479, 9.054], holding diploma [AOR=0.120, 95% CI: 0.025, 0.591], and hold BSC degree [AOR=0.050, 95% CI: 0.007, 0.378], and being farmer [AOR=0.034, 95% CI: 0.004, 0.285] showed significant association with the non-prescription use of antibiotics.ConclusionThis study concluded that the non-prescription use of antibiotics 172 (43.1%) was relatively high. Being male, residing in a rural area, holding a diploma, BSc degree, and being a farmer were significantly associated with non-prescription use of antibiotics. So, West Shoa Zone regulatory body should actively focus on the prevention of non-prescription use of antibiotics through health communication and public awareness on the demerits of non-prescription use of antibiotics.
