Self-confining isolated chiral chromophore for circularly polarized organic afterglow from amorphous polymer systems

Circularly polarized organic afterglow (CPOA) materials showing ultralong lifetime and chiral emission features have received widespread attention. However, generating CPOA emission remains a formidable challenge primarily due to the synergetic suppression non-radiative decay and chirality incorporation of triplet excitons. Herein, we propose a strategy to enable CPOA by covalently self-confining isolated chiral chromophores into the polymer matrix with rigidity and strong intermolecular interactions to effectively inhibit the non-radiative decay of chiral triplet excitons. The CPOA polymers exhibiting dual fluorescence and afterglow emission with a maximum luminescence dissymmetry factor of 1.06 × 10-2 and ultralong lifetime of up to 1.08 s have been achieved by crosslinking binaphthol derivatives into rigid self-host of polyacrylamide. Leveraging the superiority of afterglow and chiral attributes of CPOA polymers, advanced display and encryption demonstrations have been fabricated. This work underscores the significance of confining isolated chiral chromophores for the development of circularly polarized luminescent materials.

High solid-state photoluminescence quantum yield of carbon-dot-derived molecular fluorophores for light-emitting devices.

Several recent studies of carbon dots (CDs) synthesized by bottom-up methods under mild conditions have reported the presence of organic molecular fluorophores in CD dispersions. These fluorophores have a tendency to aggregate, and their properties strongly depend on whether they are present in the form of discrete molecules or aggregates. The aggregation becomes more prominent in the solid state, which motivates the study of the properties of the fluorophores associated with CDs in the solid state. Here, we report the solid-state characterization of N4,N11-dimethyldibenzo[a,h]phenazine-4,11-diamine (BPD) - a molecular fluorophore that forms CDs. Discrete BPD molecules show excitation-wavelength-independent photoluminescence (PL) emission in the green wavelength region at ∼520 nm. However, additional blue PL is also observed due to aggregation, making the PL emission significantly broad. For detailed studies, BPD is mixed in different solid matrices, and it is observed that the PL quantum yield (PLQY) of BPD films strongly depends on the concentration of BPD in the solid matrices. Increasing the concentration of BPD results in a considerable decrease in the PLQY. The PLQY of the films with an optimum concentration of BPD is 75.9% and 40.2% in polymethyl methacrylate and polystyrene, respectively. At higher concentrations, these PLQY values decrease to ∼11%. The significant decrease in the PLQY is ascribed to reabsorption and nonradiative exciton decay that is facilitated by BPD aggregation at higher concentrations. Finally, light-emitting devices (LEDs) were fabricated with almost pure white emission color, having CIE (International Commission on Illumination) coordinates of (0.35, 0.37) using BPD in the color-converting layer of blue-pumped LEDs. The device shows a luminous efficiency 3.8 lm W-1 and luminance of 43 331 cd m-2.

Fused-Ring Pyrrole-Based Near-Infrared Emissive Organic RTP Material for Persistent Afterglow Bioimaging.

Organic near-infrared room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials offer remarkable advantages in bioimaging due to their characteristic time scales and background noise elimination. However, developing near-infrared RTP materials for deep tissue imaging still faces challenges since the small band gap may increase the non-radiative decay, resulting in weak emission and short phosphorescence lifetime. In this study, fused-ring pyrrole-based structures were employed as the guest molecules for the construction of long wavelength emissive RTP materials. Compared to the decrease of the singlet energy level, the triplet energy level showed a more effectively decrease with the increase of the conjugation of the substituent groups. Moreover, the sufficient conjugation of fused ring structures in the guest molecule suppresses the non-radiative decay of triplet excitons. Therefore, a near-infrared RTP material (764 nm) was achieved for deep penetration bioimaging. Tumor cell membrane is used to coat RTP nanoparticles (NPs) to avoid decreasing the RTP performance compared to traditional coating by amphiphilic surfactants. RTP NPs with tumor-targeting properties show favorable phosphorescent properties, superior stability, and excellent biocompatibility. These NPs are applied for time-resolved luminescence imaging to eliminate background interference with excellent tissue penetration. This study provides a practical solution to prepare long-wavelength and long-lifetime organic RTP materials and their applications in bioimaging.

CdS/CdSe/CdS Spherical Quantum Wells with Near-Unity Biexciton Quantum Yield for Light-Emitting-Device Applications

Compared to zero-dimensional (0D) semiconductor quantum dots, 2D semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) offer a spectrally narrow luminescence and superior absorption coefficients, which makes this geometry an attractive candidate for optoelectronic applications. However, optical devices based on NPLs still suffer from nonradiative Auger decay of multiple excitons (MX), which limits the efficiency of the processes, including MX luminescence, electroluminescence, and optical gain. Here, we demonstrate that Auger recombination is strongly suppressed in spherically shaped nanoplatelets, called quantum shells (QSs), where a relaxed confinement of charges leads to diminished exciton–exciton interactions. In particular, we use single photon counting and photon correlation spectroscopy to show that two-dimensional CdS/CdSe/CdS core/shell/shell spherical QSs reach near-unity biexciton emission yield. The Auger suppression was found most prominent in QSs with the largest shell diameter. A combination of ultralong (>15 ns) biexciton (BX) emission lifetimes and strong exciton–exciton repulsion in these QS samples allowed demonstrating low-threshold amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), large modal gain, and microcavity lasing featuring sharp emission modes at the BX and MX transitions. Finally, by introducing QSs within perovskite matrices, we achieved a strong electroluminescence enhancement in light-emitting devices, yielding devices as bright as 213 W/m2 and a 2.3-fold enhancement of the maximum external quantum efficiency. These results represent a major step toward realizing solution-processed colloidal lasers and LEDs.

Control of Host-Matrix Morphology Enables Efficient Deep-Blue Organic Light-Emitting Devices.

Mixing a sterically bulky, electron-transporting host material into a conventional single host-guest emissive layer isdemonstratedtosuppress phase separation of the host matrix while increasing the efficiency and operational lifetime of deep-blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) with chromaticity coordinates of (0.14, 0.15). The bulky host enables homogenous mixing of the molecules comprising the emissive layer while suppressing single host aggregation; a significant loss channel of nonradiative recombination. By controlling the amorphous phase of the host-matrix morphology, the mixed-host device achieves a significant reduction in nonradiative exciton decay, resulting in 120 ± 6% increase in external quantum efficiency relative to an analogous, single-host device. In contrast to single host PHOLEDs where electrons are transported by the host and holes by the dopants, both charge carriers are conducted by the mixed host, reducing the probability of exciton annihilation, thereby doubling of the deep-blue PHOLED operational lifetime. These findings demonstrate that the host matrix morphology affects almost every aspect of PHOLED performance.

Multicolor hyperafterglow from isolated fluorescence chromophores

High-efficiency narrowband emission is always in the central role of organic optoelectronic display applications. However, the development of organic afterglow materials with sufficient color purity and high quantum efficiency for hyperafterglow is still great challenging due to the large structural relaxation and severe non-radiative decay of triplet excitons. Here we demonstrate a simple yet efficient strategy to achieve hyperafterglow emission through sensitizing and stabilizing isolated fluorescence chromophores by integrating multi-resonance fluorescence chromophores into afterglow host in a single-component copolymer. Bright multicolor hyperafterglow with maximum photoluminescent efficiencies of 88.9%, minimum full-width at half-maximums (FWHMs) of 38 nm and ultralong lifetimes of 1.64 s under ambient conditions are achieved. With this facilely designed polymer, a large-area hyperafterglow display panel was fabricated. By virtue of narrow emission band and high luminescent efficiency, the hyperafterglow presents a significant technological advance in developing highly efficient organic afterglow materials and extends the domain to new applications.

External Heavy-Atom Activated Phosphorescence of Organic Luminophores in a Rigid Fluid Matrix

Growing attention has been paid to pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Although an insufficient population and fast nonradiative decay of triplet excitons are avoided in recent endeavors, complicated synthesis and limited universality still hinder its development. Further, fluid RTP materials are more difficult to design because of faster nonradiative relaxation. Herein, a deep eutectic mixture of glucose and choline, a stable supercooled liquid at room temperature, is employed as a matrix. Direct transformation from commercial fluorescent dyes to RTP fluid is realized by doping without modifications. The excited triplet states are generated by an external heavy atom, while the rigid noncovalent network stabilizes them with both functions intrinsic to the liquid matrix. Modulation of matrix components also results in nearly white light emission of a single dye. This study presents a general strategy to design fluid RTP materials starting from the vast library of fluorophores.

Organic Supramolecular Zippers with Ultralong Organic Phosphorescence by a Dexter Energy Transfer Mechanism.

Ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) materials glow persistently in the dark, which offers new exciting possibilities in the fields of anti-counterfeiting, photoelectric devices and biological imaging. However, the development of single-component UOP materials remains a great challenge. Herein, we develop a single component organic supramolecular zipper system with a lifetime up to 0.77 s. Owing to the introduction of a pyrazole ring into the diphenylsulfone group, the "V" shaped molecules were artfully self-assembled into supramolecular zippers via π-π and C-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions, that is not only of significance in highly efficient generation of triplet excitons but also facilitates a Dexter energy transfer process within supramolecular zippers, that are responsible for alleviating radiative and non-radiative deactivation decay of triplet excitons, to finally boost the UOP. This finding not only gives a new set of guidelines for the design of single-component UOP molecules but also reveals the UOP mechanism from a new perspective.

Activation energy distribution in thermal quenching of exciton and defect-related photoluminescence of InP/ZnS quantum dots

Thermal quenching is one of the essential factors in reducing the efficiency of radiative processes in luminophores of various nature. The emission activity of low-dimensional structures is influenced also by multiplicity of parameters that are related to synthesis processes, treatment regimes, etc. In the present work, we have investigated the temperature dependence of photoluminescence caused by exciton and defect-related transitions in ensembles of biocompatible InP/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals with an average size of 2.1 and 2.3 nm. The spread in the positions of energy levels is shown to be due to size distribution of quantum dots in the ensembles under study. For a quantitative analysis of the experimental data, we have proposed a band model accounting for the Gaussian distribution of the thermally activated barriers in the photoluminescence quenching processes. The model offers the thermal escape of an electrons from the core into the shell as the main mechanism for non-radiative decay of excitons. In turn, the quenching of defect-related emission is predominantly brought about through the emptying of the hole capture centers based on dangling phosphorus bonds. We have revealed the correlation between size distributions of quantum dots and scatter of the activation energy of exciton luminescence quenching. The developed approach will give further the possibility to optimize technological regimes and methods for band engineering of indium phosphide-based type-I quantum dots.

Fluorene-based host-guest phosphorescence materials for information encryption

Metal-free organic phosphorescence materials are commonly utilized in the area of optoelectronics and bioelectronics. However, the development of materials with simultaneous efficiency and lifetime enhancement under ambient conditions remains a challenge. In this study, we design and synthesize a new class of highly efficient organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials through the host-guest doping strategy. The host molecules not only act as a bridge to promote the intersystem crossing, but also build a rigid environment to limit nonradiative decay of triplet excitons. An optimal host-guest material is thus achieved which possesses an ultralong lifetime of up to 847 ms and phosphorescence quantum efficiency of 4.7% under ambient conditions. Furthermore, the RTP materials can be successfully applied to information encryption and decryption. Our developed method not only paves the way forward for RTP materials but also expands their applications.

Non-radiative luminescence decay with self-trapped hole migration in strontium titanate: Interplay between optical and transport properties

A novel model for the non-radiative decay of self-trapped excitons (STEs) in the advanced functional oxide SrTiO3 is proposed and supported by experimental observations. The study is based on the initial ionoluminescence stage for STE emission at 2.5 eV, and its dependence on temperature and electronic excitation rate under energetic heavy-ion irradiation. For all temperatures, this initial stage reaches rapidly a quasi-steady level, and then decreases as induced-structural damage increases. The quasi-steady luminescence exhibits a linear dependence on the excitation rate, suggesting a constant efficiency for STEs formation. An activation energy of 55 meV, essentially independent of the incident ion mass and energy of projectile-ion, is deduced from an Arrhenius-type relationship with irradiation temperature. This energy is in good agreement with experimental values, measured for non-radiative STE decay under ns-laser pulse excitation, and reasonably consistent with density functional theory calculations for migration of self-trapped holes (STHs) described by a small-polaron adiabatic hopping model. A new mechanism dealing with a non-radiative contribution to the STE transition is discussed, consisting of STH migration through thermally-activated hopping and annihilation with the STE-electron. Luminescence kinetics from the chromium intrinsic impurity strongly supports this model, being consistent with the annihilation of Cr3+ centers through recombination with migrating STHs.

Room‐Temperature Phosphorescence Invoked Through Norbornyl‐Driven Intermolecular Interaction Intensification with Anomalous Reversible Solid‐State Photochromism

Impressively, 1800‐fold phosphorescence lifetime enhancement is achieved in comparison with the reference compounds without NB. The molecular packing and RTP performance can be further modulated by the length of the backbones and terminal end‐groups. It is quite peculiar that NB‐annulated phthalic acid exhibits reversible photochromism in the solid state, likely due to the formation of persistent radical pairs. Our study paves an ingenious avenue towards enhancing intermolecular interactions and provides significant implications for a better comprehensive understanding of the origin of their RTP and the inherent photophysical mechanism.

Excitonic Fine Structure in Emission of Linear Carbon Chains.

We studied monatomic linear carbon chains stabilized by gold nanoparticles attached to their ends and deposited on a solid substrate. We observe spectral features of straight chains containing from 8 to 24 atoms. Low-temperature PL spectra reveal characteristic triplet fine structures that repeat themselves for carbon chains of different lengths. The triplet is invariably composed of a sharp intense peak accompanied by two broader satellites situated 15 and 40 meV below the main peak. We interpret these resonances as an edge-state neutral exciton and positively and negatively charged trions, respectively. The time-resolved PL shows that the radiative lifetime of the observed quasiparticles is about 1 ns, and it increases with the increase of the length of the chain. At high temperatures a nonradiative exciton decay channel appears due to the thermal hopping of carriers between parallel carbon chains. Excitons in carbon chains possess large oscillator strengths and extremely low inhomogeneous broadenings.

Influence of the Substrate on the Optical and Photo-electrochemical Properties of Monolayer MoS2.

Substrates influence the electrical and optical properties of monolayer (ML) MoS2 in field-effect transistors and photodetectors. Photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy measurements have shown that conducting substrates can vary the doping concentration and influence exciton decay channels in ML-MoS2. Doping and exciton decay dynamics are expected to play a major role in the efficiency of light-driven chemical reactions, but it is unclear to what extent these factors contribute to the photo(electro)catalytic properties of ML-MoS2. Here, we report spatially resolved PL, Raman, and photo-electrochemical current measurements of 5-10 μm-wide ML-MoS2 triangles deposited on pairs of indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) electrodes that are separated by a narrow insulating quartz channel [i.e., an ITO interdigitated array (IDA) electrode]. Optical microscopy images and atomic force microscopy measurements revealed that the ML-MoS2 triangles lie conformally on the quartz and ITO substrates. The PL spectrum of MoS2 shifts and decreases in intensity in the ITO region, which can be attributed to differences in nonradiative and radiative exciton decay channels. Raman spectra showed no significant peak shifts on the two substrates that would have indicated a substrate-induced doping effect. We spatially resolved the photo-electrochemical current because of hole-induced iodide oxidation and observed that ML-MoS2 produces lower photocurrents in the quartz region than in the ITO region. The correlated PL, Raman, and photocurrent mapping data show that the MoS2/quartz interface diminishes fast nonradiative exciton decay pathways but the photocurrent response in the quartz region is likely limited by inefficient in-plane carrier transport to the ITO electrode because of carrier recombination with S vacancies in MoS2 or charged impurities in the quartz substrate. Nonetheless, the experimental methodology presented herein provides a framework to evaluate substrate engineering strategies to tune the (photo)electrocatalytic properties of two-dimensional materials.

Dynamics of exciton energy renormalization in monolayer transition metal disulfides

Fundamental understandings on the dynamics of charge carriers and excitonic quasiparticles in semiconductors are of central importance for both many-body physics and promising optoelectronic and photonic applications. Here, we investigated the carrier dynamics and many-body interactions in two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), using monolayer WS2 as an example, by employing femtosecond broadband pump-probe spectroscopy. Three time regimes for the exciton energy renormalization are unambiguously revealed with a distinct red-blue-red shift upon above-bandgap optical excitations. We attribute the dominant physical process in the three typical regimes to free carrier screening effect, Coulombic exciton–exciton interactions and Auger photocarrier generation, respectively, which show distinct dependence on the optical excitation wavelength, pump fluences and/or lattice temperature. An intrinsic exciton radiative lifetime of about 1.2 picoseconds (ps) in monolayer WS2 is unraveled at low temperature, and surprisingly the efficient Auger nonradiative decay of both bright and dark excitons puts the system in a nonequilibrium state at the nanosecond timescale. In addition, the dynamics of trions at low temperature is observed to be significantly different from that of excitons, e.g., a long radiative lifetime of ~ 108.7 ps at low excitation densities and the evolution of trion energy as a function of delay times. Our findings elucidate the dynamics of excitonic quasiparticles and the intricate many-body physics in 2D semiconductors, underpinning the future development of photonics, valleytronics and optoelectronics based on 2D semiconductors.

Manipulating the Ultralong Organic Phosphorescence of Small Molecular Crystals.

Ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) of metal-free organic materials has received considerable attention recently owing to their long-lived emission lifetimes, and the fact that they present an attractive alternative to persistent luminescence in inorganic phosphors. Enormous research effort has been devoted on improving UOP performance in metal-free organic phosphors by promoting the intersystem crossing (ISC) process and suppressing the non-radiative decay of triplet state excitons. This minireview summarizes the recent advances in the rational approaches for manipulating the UOP properties of small molecular crystals, such as phosphorescence lifetime, efficiency, and emission colors. Finally, the present challenges and future development of this field are proposed. This review will provide a guideline to rationally design more advanced metal-free organic phosphorescence materials for potential applications.

Simultaneous Long-Persistent Blue Luminescence and High Quantum Yield within 2D Organic-Metal Halide Perovskite Micro/Nanosheets.

Molecular solid-state materials with long-lived luminescence (such as thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) systems) are promising for display, sensoring, and bio-imaging applications. However, the design of such materials that exhibit both long luminescent lifetime and high solid-state emissive efficiency remains an open challenge. Two-dimensional (2D) organic-metal halide perovskite materials have a high blue-emitting quantum yield of up to 63.55 % and ultralong TADF lifetime of 103.12 ms at ambient temperature and atmosphere. Our design leverages the combined influences of a 2D space/electronic confinement effect and a modest heavy-atom tuning strategy. Photophysical studies and calculations reveal that the enhanced quantum yield is due to the rigid laminate structure of perovskites, which can effectively inhibit the non-radiative decay of excitons.

Collective and local energy transfer in biologically-hybridized systems of semiconductor quantum dots and metallic nanoantenna arrays

We study polarization-dependent energy transfer and exciton dynamics in hybrid systems consisting of quantum dot bioconjugates and arrays of metallic nanoantennas. The size distribution of the quantum dots are used to investigate how excitons with different transition energies interact with the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) and collective surface lattice resonances (SLRs) supported by the arrays. We show that, depending on the projections of the electric dipoles of the quantum dots along the nanoantennas, they can interact with these resonances differently. This leads to polarization-dependent radiative and non-radiative decay of excitons, highlighting such systems can support two types of energy transfer mechanisms: (i) collective wavelength-dependent transfer of excitation energy from quantum dots to the arrays of the metallic nanoantennas via SLR (photonic-plasmonic path), and (ii) the local energy transfer to individual nanoantennas via localized surface plasmons (direct path). Our results also show that quantum dots with larger cores can have stronger interaction with SLRs. This suggests that such resonances can act as an energy drain that enhances cascaded energy transfer between quantum dots.
