Collisional excitation of HCNH+ by He and H2: New potential energy surfaces and inelastic rate coefficients.

Protonated molecules have been increasingly detected in the interstellar medium (ISM), and usually astrochemical models fail at reproducing the abundances derived from observational spectra. Rigorous interpretation of the detected interstellar emission lines requires prior calculations of collisional rate coefficients with H2 and He, i.e., the most abundant species in the ISM. In this work, we focus on the excitation of HCNH+ induced by collision with H2 and He. Therefore, we first calculate ab initio potential energy surfaces (PESs) using the explicitly correlated and standard coupled cluster method with single, double, and non-iterative triple excitation in conjunction with the augmented-correlation consistent-polarized valence triple zeta basis set. Both the HCNH+-H2 and HCNH+-He potentials are characterized by deep global minima of 1426.60 and 271.72 cm-1, respectively, and large anisotropies. From these PESs, we derive state-to-state inelastic cross sections for the 16 low-lying rotational energy levels of HCNH+ using the quantum mechanical close-coupling approach. The differences between cross sections due to ortho- and para-H2 impacts turn out to be minor. Using a thermal average of these data, we retrieve downward rate coefficients for kinetic temperatures of up to 100K. As it could be anticipated, differences of up to two orders of magnitude exist between the rate coefficients induced by H2 and He collisions. We expect that our new collision data will help to improve the disagreement between abundances retrieved from observational spectra and astrochemical models.

Elastic and glancing-angle rate coefficients for heating of ultracold Li and Rb atoms by collisions with room-temperature noble gases, H2, and N2.

Trapped ultracold alkali-metal atoms can be used to measure pressure in the ultra-high-vacuum and XHV pressure regimes, those with p < 10-6 Pa. This application for ultracold atoms relies on precise knowledge of collision rate coefficients of alkali-metal atoms with residual room-temperature atoms and molecules in the ambient vacuum or with deliberately introduced gasses. Here, we determine combined elastic and inelastic rate coefficients as well as glancing-angle rate coefficients for ultracold 7Li and 87Rb with room-temperature noble gas atoms as well as H2 and 14N2 molecules. Glancing collisions are those processes where only little momentum is transferred to the alkali-metal atom and this atom is not ejected from its trap. Rate coefficients are found by performing quantum close-coupling scattering calculations using ab initio ground-state electronic Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces. The potentials for Li and Rb with noble gas atoms and also for Rb(2S)-H2(XΣg +) and Rb(2S)-N2(X1Σg +) systems are based on the non-relativistic spin-restricted coupled-cluster method with single, double, and noniterative triple excitations [RCCSD(T)]. For Li(2S)-N2(X1Σg +), the potential is computed at the explicitly correlated spin-restricted RCCSD(T)-F12 level. For Rb, Kr, and Xe atoms, scalar relativistic corrections to the core electrons have been included, while second-order spin-orbit corrections from the valence electrons have been estimated. Data for Li-H2 and Li-He were taken from the existing literature. We estimate standard uncertainties of the rate coefficients by comparing rate coefficients calculated using potentials found with electronic basis sets of increasing size, including estimates of relativistic spin-orbit corrections and the uncertainty of the van der Waals coefficients. The relative uncertainties of rate coefficients are 1%-2% with the exception of 7Li or 87Rb colliding with 20Ne. Those have relative uncertainties of 9% and 8%, respectively. We also show that a commonly used semiclassical approximation for the total elastic rate coefficient agrees with the quantum calculations to 10% with the exception of 7Li and 87Rb collisions with H2, where the semiclassical value underestimates the quantum value by 20%.

Rotational excitation of NS+ by H2 revisited: A new global potential energy surface and rate coefficients.

Due to the lack of specific collisional data, the abundance of NS+ in cold dense interstellar clouds was determined using collisional rate coefficients of CS as a substitute. To better understand the chemistry of sulfur in the interstellar medium, further abundance modeling using the actual NS+ collisional rate coefficients is needed. For this purpose, we have computed the first full 4D potential energy surface of the NS+-H2 van der Waals complex using the explicitly correlated coupled cluster approach with single, double, and non-iterative triple excitation in conjunction with the augmented-correlation consistent-polarized valence triple zeta basis set. The potential energy surface exhibits a global minimum of 848.24 cm-1 for a planar configuration of the complex. The long-range interaction energy, described using multipolar moments, is sensitive to the orientation of H2 up to radial distances of ∼50 a0. From this new interaction potential, we derived excitation cross sections, induced by collision with ortho- and para-H2, for the 15 low-lying rotational levels of NS+ using the quantum mechanical close-coupling approach. By thermally averaging these data, we determined downward rate coefficients for temperatures up to 50K. By comparing them with the previous NS+-H2 data, we demonstrated that reduced dimensional approaches are not suited for this system. In addition, we found that the CS collisional data underestimate our results by up to an order of magnitude. The differences clearly indicate that the abundance of NS+, in cold dense clouds retrieved from observational spectra, must be reassessed using these new collisional rate coefficients.

Interaction potentials, electric moments, polarizabilities, and chemical reactions of YbCu, YbAg, and YbAu molecules

Ultracold YbAg molecules have been recently proposed as promising candidates for electron electric dipole moment searches Verma et al (2020 Phys. Rev. Lett. 125 153201). Here, we calculate potential energy curves, permanent electric dipole and quadrupole moments, and static electric dipole polarizabilities for the YbCu, YbAg, and YbAu molecules in their ground electronic states. We use the coupled cluster method restricted to single, double, and noniterative triple excitations with large Gaussian basis sets, while the scalar relativistic effects are included within the small-core energy-consistent pseudopotentials. We find that the studied molecules are relatively strongly bound with the well depths of 5708 cm−1, 5253 cm−1, and 13349 cm−1 and equilibrium distances of 5.50 bohr, 5.79 bohr, and 5.55 bohr for YbCu, YbAg, and YbAu, respectively. They have large permanent electric dipole moments of 3.2D, 3.3D, and 5.3D at equilibrium distances, respectively. We also calculate equilibrium geometries and energies of corresponding trimers. The studied molecules are chemically reactive unless they are segregated in an optical lattice or shielded with external fields. The investigated molecules may find application in ultracold controlled chemistry, dipolar many-body physics, or precision measurement experiments.

State-to-state inelastic rate coefficients of phosphine in collision with He at low to moderate temperature

ABSTRACTSeveral phosphorus-bearing molecules, such as the phosphine of interest here, have been detected in astrophysical media. With the aim of satisfying the precision required by the astrophysical community, we report the rate coefficients of PH3 in collision with helium from low to moderate temperature. To this end, we constructed the first three-dimensional potential energy surface (3D-PES) of the PH3–He van der Waals complex, which governs the nuclear motions. The 3D-PES was worked out by means of the standard coupled cluster with single, double and non-iterative triple excitation approach, in conjunction with the aug-cc-pVQZ basis set and complemented by mid-bond functions. This 3D-PES presents a well of 34.92 cm−1 at {R, θ, Φ} = {5.76 a0, 90°, 60°}. Afterwards, we incorporated this 3D-PES into time-independent close-coupling quantum dynamical computations to derive the inelastic cross-sections of rotational excitation of (ortho-) para-PH3 after collision with He up to (1000) 500 cm−1. Subsequently, we evaluated the rate coefficients for temperatures up to (100 K) 50 K populating the (41) 42 low-lying rotational levels of (ortho-) para-PH3. These data were derived by averaging the cross-sections thermally over the Maxwell–Boltzmann velocity distribution. No general propensity rules are found. We also performed a comparison with the rates for NH3–He. Differences are observed that invalidate the use of NH3 rates for deducing accurate abundances of phosphine in cold astrophysical media. Our results should be of great help in determining accurate PH3 abundances and, more generally, constraining the interstellar PH3 chemistry better.

A New Benchmark Set for Excitation Energy of Charge Transfer States: Systematic Investigation of Coupled Cluster Type Methods.

The numerous existing publications on benchmarking quantum chemistry methods for excited states rarely include Charge Transfer (CT) states, although many interesting phenomena in, e.g., biochemistry and material physics involve the transfer of electrons between fragments of the system. Therefore, it is timely to test the accuracy of quantum chemical methods for CT states, as well. In this study we first propose a new benchmark set consisting of dimers having low-energy CT states. On this set, the vertical excitation energy has been calculated with Coupled Cluster methods including triple excitations (CC3, CCSDT-3, CCSD(T)(a)*), as well as with methods including full or approximate doubles (CCSD, STEOM-CCSD, CC2, ADC(2), EOM-CCSD(2)). The results show that the popular CC2 and ADC(2) methods are much less accurate for CT states than for valence states. On the other hand, EOM-CCSD seems to have similar systematic overestimation of the excitation energies for both types of states. Among the triples methods the novel EOM-CCSD(T)(a)* method including noniterative triple excitations is found to stand out with its consistently good performance for all types of states, delivering essentially EOM-CCSDT quality results.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study of the Water Dimer Binding Energy and Halogen-π Interactions.

Halogen-π systems are involved with competition between halogen bonding and π-interaction. Using the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method, we compare the interaction of benzene with diatomic halogens (X2: Cl2/Br2) with the typical hydrogen bonding in the water dimer, taking into account explicit correlations of up to three bodies. The benzene-Cl2/Br2 binding energies (13.07 ± 0.42/16.62 ± 0.02 kJ/mol) attributed to both halogen bonding and dispersion are smaller than but comparable to the typical hydrogen bonding in the water dimer binding energy (20.88 ± 0.27 kJ/mol). All of the above values are in good agreement with those from the coupled-cluster with single, double, and noniterative triple excitations (CCSD(T)) results at the complete basis set limit (benzene-Cl2/Br2: 12.78/16.17 kJ/mol; water dimer: 21.0 kJ/mol).

Hyperfine excitation of NS+ due to para-H2(j = 0) impact

ABSTRACT Sulphur bearing nitrogenous compounds have been observed in space over this last decade. Modelling their abundances has been done using rate coefficients of isoelectronic molecules. In order to satisfy the astrophysical precision required, we report the actual rate coefficients of NS+ induced by collision with the most abundant interstellar species (para-H2). Considering the 23 low-lying rotational levels of NS+, we were able to compute the (hyperfine) rate coefficients up to 100 K. These latter were carried out by averaging cross-sections over the Maxwell–Boltzmann velocity distribution. The state-to-state inelastic cross-sections were determined in the quantum mechanical close coupling approach for total energies ranging up to 1400 cm−1. These dynamic data result from a four dimensional potential energy surface (4D-PES) which was spherically averaged over the H2 orientations. The 4D-PES was calculated using the explicitly correlated coupled cluster method with simple, double, and non-iterative triple excitation (CCSD(T)–F12) connected to the augmented–correlation consistent–polarized valence triple zeta Gaussian basis set (aug–cc–pVTZ). The so-averaged PES presents a very deep well of 596.72 cm−1 at R = 5.94 a0 and θ1 = 123.20°. Discussions on the propensity rules for the (hyperfine) rate coefficients were made and they are in favour of (Δj = ΔF) Δj = 1 transitions. The results presented here may be crucially needed in order to accurately model the NS+ abundance in space. In addition, we expect that this paper will encourage investigations on the sulphur bearing nitrogenous compounds.

Interactions of benzene, naphthalene, and azulene with alkali-metal and alkaline-earth-metal atoms for ultracold studies

We consider collisional properties of polyatomic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules immersed into ultracold atomic gases and investigate intermolecular interactions of exemplary benzene, naphthalene, and azulene with alkali-metal (Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) and alkaline-earth-metal (Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) atoms. We apply the state-of-the-art ab initio techniques to compute the potential energy surfaces (PESs). We use the coupled cluster method restricted to single, double, and noniterative triple excitations to reproduce the correlation energy and the small-core energy-consistent pseudopotentials to model the scalar relativistic effects in heavier metal atoms. We also report the leading long-range isotropic and anisotropic dispersion and induction interaction coefficients. The PESs are characterized in detail, and the nature of intermolecular interactions is analyzed and benchmarked using symmetry-adapted perturbation theory. The full three-dimensional PESs are provided for the selected systems within the atom-bond pairwise additive representation and can be employed in scattering calculations. The present study of the electronic structure is the first step toward the evaluation of prospects for sympathetic cooling of polyatomic aromatic molecules with ultracold atoms. We suggest azulene, an isomer of naphthalene which possesses a significant permanent electric dipole moment and optical transitions in the visible range, as a promising candidate for electric field manipulation and buffer-gas or sympathetic cooling.

Ab initio studies of the ground and first excited states of the Sr-H2 and Yb-H2 complexes.

Accurate intermolecular potential-energy surfaces (IPESs) for the ground and first excited states of the Sr-H2 and Yb-H2 complexes were calculated. After an extensive methodological study, the coupled cluster with single, double, and non-iterative triple excitation method with the Douglas-Kroll-Hess Hamiltonian and correlation-consistent basis sets of triple-ζ quality extended with 2 sets of diffuse functions and a set of midbond functions were chosen. The obtained ground-state IPESs are similar in both complexes, being relatively isotropic with two minima and two transition states (equivalent by symmetry). The global minima correspond to the collinear geometries with R = 5.45 and 5.10 Å and energies of -27.7 and -31.7 cm-1 for the Sr-H2 and Yb-H2 systems, respectively. The calculated surfaces for the Sr(3P)-H2 and Yb(3P)-H2 states are deeper and more anisotropic, and they exhibit similar patterns within both complexes. The deepest surfaces, where the singly occupied p-orbital of the metal atom is perpendicular to the intermolecular axis, are characterised by the global minima of ca. -2053 and -2260 cm-1 in the T-shape geometries at R = 2.41 and 2.29 Å for Sr-H2 and Yb-H2, respectively. Additional calculations for the complexes of Sr and Yb with the He atom revealed a similar, strong dependence of the interaction energy on the orientation of the p-orbital in the Sr(3P)-He and Yb(3P)-He states.

Atom-molecule collisions, spin relaxation, and sympathetic cooling in an ultracold spin-polarized Rb(S2)−SrF(Σ+2) mixture

We explore the suitability of ultracold collisions between spin-polarized SrF($^2\Sigma^+$) molecules and Rb($^2$S) atoms as elementary steps for the sympathetic cooling of SrF($^2\Sigma^+$) molecules in a magnetic trap. To this end, we carry out quantum mechanical scattering calculations on ultracold Rb+SrF collisions in a magnetic field based on an accurate potential energy surface for the triplet electronic state of Rb-SrF developed ab initio using a spin-restricted coupler cluster method with single, double and noniterative triple excitations [RCCSD(T)]. The Rb-SrF interaction has a global minimum with a well depth of 3444 cm$^{-1}$ in a bent geometry and a shallow local minimum in the linear geometry. Despite such a strong and anisotropic interaction, we find that converged close-coupling scattering calculations on Rb+SrF collisions in a magnetic field are still possible using rotational basis sets including up to 125 closed rotational channels in the total angular momentum representation. Our calculations show that electronic spin relaxation in fully spin-polarized Rb-SrF collisions occurs much more slowly than elastic scattering over a wide range of magnetic fields (1-1000 G) and collision energies ($10^{-5}-10^{-3}$ K) suggesting good prospects of sympathetic cooling of laser-cooled SrF($^2\Sigma^+$) molecules with spin-polarized Rb($^2$S) atoms in a magnetic trap. We show that incoming $p$-wave scattering plays a significant role in ultracold collisions due to the large reduced mass of the Rb-SrF collision pair. The calculated magnetic field dependence of the inelastic cross sections at 1.4 $\mu$K displays a rich resonance structure including a low-field $p$-wave resonance, which suggests that external magnetic fields can be used to enhance the efficiency of sympathetic cooling in heavy atom-molecule mixtures.

Non-iterative triple excitations in equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theory for electron attachment with applications to bound and temporary anions.

The impact of residual electron correlation beyond the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) approximation on positions and widths of electronic resonances is investigated. To establish a method that accomplishes this task in an economical manner, several approaches proposed for the approximate treatment of triple excitations are reviewed with respect to their performance in the electron attachment (EA) variant of EOM-CC theory. The recently introduced EOM-CCSD(T)(a)* method [D. A. Matthews and J. F. Stanton, J. Chem. Phys. 145, 124102 (2016)], which includes non-iterative corrections to the reference and the target states, reliably reproduces vertical attachment energies from EOM-EA-CC calculations with single, double, and full triple excitations in contrast to schemes in which non-iterative corrections are applied only to the target states. Applications of EOM-EA-CCSD(T)(a)* augmented by a complex absorbing potential (CAP) to several temporary anions illustrate that shape resonances are well described by EOM-EA-CCSD, but that residual electron correlation often makes a non-negligible impact on their positions and widths. The positions of Feshbach resonances, on the other hand, are significantly improved when going from CAP-EOM-EA-CCSD to CAP-EOM-EA-CCSD(T)(a)*, but the correct energetic order of the relevant electronic states is still not achieved.

Double-Layered Composite Methods Extrapolating to Complete Basis-Set Limit for the Systems Involving More than Ten Heavy Atoms: Application to the Reaction of Heptafluoroisobutyronitrile with Hydroxyl Radical.

Two versions of the double-layered composite methods, including the restricted open-shell model chemistry based on the complete basis set quadratic mode (DL-ROCBS-Q) and the extrapolated CBS limit of electronic energy on the basis of the coupled cluster with single, double, and noniterative triple excitations with the hierarchical sequence of the correlation-consistent basis sets (DL-RCCSD(T)/CBS), were developed to calculate the energetic reaction routes for the systems involving 13/14 heavy atoms with good balance between efficiency and accuracy. Both models have been employed to investigate the oxidation reactions of heptafluoroisobutyronitrile ((CF3)2CFCN) with hydroxyl radical. The (CF3)2CFCN + OH reaction is dominated by the C-O addition/elimination routes as bifurcated into trans- and cis-conformations. Although the formation of isocyanic acid or hydrogen fluoride is highly exothermic, the major nascent product was predicted to be the less exoergic cyanic acid. Preference of the product channels could be tuned by the single water molecule in the presence of the H2O-HO complex. The production of amide compound was found to be the most significant route accompanied by the OH regeneration. Moreover, the OH radical could be an efficient catalyst for the hydrolysis of (CF3)2CFCN. Implication of the current theoretical results in the chemistry of (CF3)2CFCN for both atmospheric sink and potential dielectric replacement gas was discussed.

Geometry-dependent atomic multipole models for the water molecule.

Models of atomic electric multipoles for the water molecule have been optimized in order to reproduce the electric potential around the molecule computed by ab initio calculations at the coupled cluster level of theory with up to noniterative triple excitations in an augmented triple-zeta quality basis set. Different models of increasing complexity, from atomic charges up to models containing atomic charges, dipoles, and quadrupoles, have been obtained. The geometry dependence of these atomic multipole models has been investigated by changing bond lengths and HOH angle to generate 125 molecular structures (reduced to 75 symmetry-unique ones). For several models, the atomic multipole components have been fitted as a function of the geometry by a Taylor series of fourth order in monomer coordinate displacements.

Benchmark Relative Energies for Large Water Clusters with the Generalized Energy-Based Fragmentation Method

The generalized energy-based fragmentation (GEBF) method has been applied to investigate relative energies of large water clusters (H2O)n (n = 32, 64) with the coupled-cluster singles and doubles with noniterative triple excitations (CCSD(T)) and second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) at the complete basis set (CBS) limit. Here large water clusters are chosen to be representative structures sampled from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of liquid water. Our calculations show that the GEBF method is capable of providing highly accurate relative energies for these water clusters in a cost-effective way. We demonstrate that the relative energies from GEBF-MP2/CBS are in excellent agreement with those from GEBF-CCSD(T)/CBS for these water clusters. With the GEBF-CCSD(T)/CBS relative energies as the benchmark results, we have assessed the performance of several theoretical methods widely used for ab initio MD simulations of liquids and aqueous solutions. These methods include density functional theory (DFT) with a number of different functionals, MP2, and density functional tight-binding (the third generation, DFTB3 in short). We find that MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ and several DFT methods (such as LC-ωPBE-D3 and ωB97XD) with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set can provide satisfactory descriptions for these water clusters. Some widely used functionals (such as B3LYP, PBE0) and DFTB3 are not accurate enough for describing the relative energies of large water clusters. Although the basis set dependence of DFT is less than that of ab initio electron correlation methods, we recommend the combination of a few best functionals and large basis sets (at least aug-cc-pVTZ) in theoretical studies on water clusters or aqueous solutions.

Cold interactions and chemical reactions of linear polyatomic anions with alkali-metal and alkaline-earth-metal atoms.

We consider collisional studies of linear polyatomic ions immersed in ultracold atomic gases and investigate the intermolecular interactions and chemical reactions of several molecular anions (OH-, CN-, NCO-, C2H-, C4H-) with alkali-metal (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and alkaline-earth-metal (Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) atoms. State-of-the-art ab initio techniques are applied to compute the potential energy surfaces (PESs) for these systems. The coupled cluster method restricted to single, double, and noniterative triple excitations, CCSD(T), is employed and the scalar relativistic effects in heavier metal atoms are modeled within the small-core energy-consistent pseudopotentials. The leading long-range isotropic and anisotropic induction and dispersion interaction coefficients are obtained within the perturbation theory. The PESs are characterized in detail and their universal similarities typical for systems dominated by the induction interaction are discussed. The two-dimensional PESs are provided for selected systems and can be employed in scattering calculations. The possible channels of chemical reactions and their control are analyzed based on the energetics of the reactants. The present study of the electronic structure is the first step towards the evaluation of prospects for sympathetic cooling and controlled chemistry of linear polyatomic ions with ultracold atoms.

Halogen-π Interactions between Benzene and X2/CX4 (X = Cl, Br): Assessment of Various Density Functionals with Respect to CCSD(T).

Various types of interactions between halogen (X) and π moiety (X-π interaction) including halogen bonding play important roles in forming the structures of biological, supramolecular, and nanomaterial systems containing halogens and aromatic rings. Furthermore, halogen molecules such as X2 and CX4 (X = Cl/Br) can be intercalated in graphite and bilayer graphene for doping and graphene functionalization/modification. Due to the X-π interactions, though recently highly studied, their structures are still hardly predictable. Here, using the coupled-cluster with single, double, and noniterative triple excitations (CCSD(T)), the Møller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory (MP2), and various flavors of density functional theory (DFT) methods, we study complexes of benzene (Bz) with halogen-containing molecules X2 and CX4 (X = Cl/Br) and analyze various components of the interaction energy using symmetry adapted perturbation theory (SAPT). As for the lowest energy conformers (S1), X2-Bz is found to have the T-shaped structure where the electropositive X atom-end of X2 is pointing to the electronegative midpoint of CC bond of the Bz ring, and CX4-Bz has the stacked structure. In addition to this CX4-Bz (S1), other low energy conformers of X2-Bz (S2/S3) and CX4-Bz (S2) are stabilized primarily by the dispersion interaction, whereas the electrostatic interaction is substantial. Most of the density functionals show noticeable deviations from the CCSD(T) complete basis set (CBS) limit binding energies, especially in the case of strongly halogen-bonded conformers of X2-Bz (S1), whereas the deviations are relatively small for CX4-Bz where the dispersion is more important. The halogen bond shows highly anisotropic electron density around halogen atoms and the DFT results are very sensitive to basis set. The unsatisfactory performance of many density functionals could be mainly due to less accurate exchange. This is evidenced from the good performance by the dispersion corrected hybrid and double hybrid functionals. B2GP-PLYP-D3 and PBE0-TS(Tkatchenko-Scheffler)/D3 are well suited to describe the X-π interactions adequately, close to the CCSD(T)/CBS binding energies (within ∼1 kJ/mol). This understanding would be useful to study diverse X-π interaction driven structures such as halogen containing compounds intercalated between 2-dimensional layers.

Intermolecular interactions of oligothienoacenes: Do S⋯S interactions positively contribute to crystal structures of sulfur-containing aromatic molecules?

Intermolecular interactions in the crystals of tetra- and penta-thienoacene were studied using ab initio molecular orbital calculations for evaluating the magnitude of characteristic S⋯S interactions with great attention paid to their origin. The interactions between the π-stacked neighboring molecules are significantly greater than those between the neighboring molecules exhibiting the S⋯S contact, although it has sometimes been claimed that the S⋯S interactions play important roles in adjusting the molecular arrangement of sulfur-containing polycyclic aromatic molecules in the crystals owing to short S⋯S contacts. The coupled cluster calculations with single and double substitutions with noniterative triple excitation interaction energies at the basis set limit estimated for the π-stacked and S⋯S contacted neighboring molecules in the tetrathienoacene crystal are -11.17 and -4.27 kcal/mol, respectively. Those for π-stacked molecules in the pentathienoacene crystal is -14.38 kcal/mol, while those for S⋯S contacted molecules are -7.02 and -6.74 kcal/mol. The dispersion interaction is the major source of the attraction between the π-stacked and S⋯S contacted molecules, while the orbital-orbital interactions are repulsive: The orbital-orbital interactions, which are significant for charge carrier transport properties, are not much more than the results of the short S⋯S contact caused by the strong dispersion interactions. Besides, the intermolecular interaction energy calculated for a trithienoacene dimer has strong orientation dependence.

Ab initio studies of the Rg-NO(+)(X(1)Σ(+)) van der Waals complexes (Rg = He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe).

We used the explicitly correlated variant of the coupled clusters method with single, double, and noniterative triple excitations [CCSD(T)-F12] to compute two-dimensional potential energy surfaces of van der Waals complexes formed by rare gas atoms (Rg) and NO(+)(X(1)Σ(+)) cations. We used the correlation-consistent, triple-zeta (cc-pVTZ-F12) atomic basis sets, and for Kr and Xe rare gases, we employed corresponding pseudopotential cc-pVTZ-PP-F12 atomic basis sets. These basis sets were additionally augmented with mid-bond functions. The complexes are all of skewed T-shape type with Rg atom being closer to the N-side. Using analytical representation of the potentials, we have estimated zero-point energy corrected dissociation energies from anharmonic calculations with BOUND program and also from the harmonic approximation. The binding energies increase with the polarization of the Rg atom in series from He to Xe and are 196 cm(-1), 360 cm(-1), 1024 cm(-1), 1434 cm(-1), and 2141 cm(-1), respectively. Their corresponding dissociation energies are 132 cm(-1), 300 cm(-1), 927 cm(-1), 1320 cm(-1), and 1994 cm(-1) for the complexes with He to Xe, respectively. We find good agreement with previous theoretical and experimental results. The harmonic vibrational frequencies were calculated for the bending and stretching modes of the Rg-NO(+) complexes.

New ab initio adiabatic potential energy surfaces and bound state calculations for the singlet ground X̃(1)A1 and excited C̃(1)B2(2(1)A(')) states of SO2.

We report new and more accurate adiabatic potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the ground X̃(1)A1 and electronically excited C̃(1)B2(2(1)A(')) states of the SO2 molecule. Ab initio points are calculated using the explicitly correlated internally contracted multi-reference configuration interaction (icMRCI-F12) method. A second less accurate PES for the ground X̃ state is also calculated using an explicitly correlated single-reference coupled-cluster method with single, double, and non-iterative triple excitations [CCSD(T)-F12]. With these new three-dimensional PESs, we determine energies of the vibrational bound states and compare these values to existing literature data and experiment.
