To grunt or not to grunt: Factors governing call production in female olive baboons, Papio anubis.

Vocal signals often play an important role in synchronizing the activities of group members, coordinating decisions about when and where to travel, and facilitating social interactions in which there are potential conflicts of interest. Here, we show that when female olive baboons (Papio anubis) give low amplitude grunts after approaching other females, they are less likely to behave aggressively toward their partners and more likely to handle their partners’ infants and interact affiliatively with them. In addition, females are more likely to grunt after they approach lower ranking females than after they approach higher ranking females and are less likely to grunt after they approach their own mothers and daughters than after they approach other females. These patterns, which are strikingly similar to patterns previously reported in chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) support the hypothesis that grunts function as signals of benign intent. Moreover, they suggest that actors’ decisions about whether to grunt or remain silent are influenced by the social context, particularly their partners’ likely response to their approach. Taken together, the patterning of grunts in olive and chacma baboon suggests that these vocalizations play an important in reducing uncertainty about actors’ intentions and facilitate nonaggressive social interactions.

Single aggressive and non-aggressive social interactions elicit distinct behavioral patterns to the context in mice

Aggressive interactions between conspecific animals have been used as a social stressor with ethological characteristics to study how social interactions can modulate animal’s behavior. Here, a new protocol based on aggressive and non-aggressive interactions was developed to study how different social interactions can alter the behavioral profile of animals re-exposed to the context in which the interaction occurred. We used factor analysis to trace the behavioral profile of socially defeated and non-defeated mice when they were re-exposed to the apparatus [three interconnected chambers: home chamber, tunnel and surface area]; we also compared the behavior presented before (habituation) and 24 h after (re-exposure) the non-aggressive or aggressive interactions. A final factor analysis from defeated animals yielded 4 factors that represented 72.09% of total variance; whereas non-defeated animal’s analysis was loaded with 5 factors that represented 85.46% of total variance. A 5-min non-aggressive interaction reduced the frequency of stretched attend behavior in the tunnel, whereas a single social defeat reduced time in the tunnel and increased time spent performing self-grooming in the home chamber without conditioning any other spatio-temporal and complementary measures. Together, these results suggest that different social interactions may modulate distinct behavioral profiles in animals when re-exposed to the context.

Teeth clipping, tail docking and toy enrichment affect physiological indicators, behaviour and lesions of weaned pigs after re-location and mixing

Re-location and mixing after weaning increase the risk of aggression in weaned pigs. To quantify the effects of tail docking, teeth clipping and toy enrichment on the growth performances, behaviour, lesions, and physiological indicators of weaned pigs after re-location and mixing, a total of 262 weaned pigs from four pig processing treatments were selected and regrouped to two enrichment treatments within each processing treatment. The experimental newborn piglets from 24 litters were treated tail docking and teeth clipping at 3 d of age and weaned at 24 d of age. At 30 d of age, pigs in each treatment were weighed, re-located to a nursery room and mixed into 2 pens. Eight rubber toys were installed in one of two pens in each group. The behaviour of weaned pigs was recorded and observed at 1, 2 and 3 d after mixing. At 3 and 6 d before mixing and 1, 3 and 6 d after mixing, lesions on the body and tail, body surface temperature (BST), respiration rate (RR) and salivary cortisol concentrations were determined. At 85 d of age, all experimental pigs were weighed again. Mortality rate, average daily gain (ADG), and feed efficiency of pigs were recorded. Pigs with clipped teeth performed less negative social behaviour (aggressive attacks/fight) (P < 0.05) and more positive social behaviour (non-aggressive social interactions) (P < 0.01) than pigs with intact teeth. Pigs with docked tails performed more positive social behaviour (P < 0.01) than pigs with intact tails. Toy enrichment decreased (P < 0.05) lesions on the ear and front body of pigs, and pigs with docked tail got fewer lesions on the tail (P < 0.01). Intact teeth increased (P < 0.01) RR, while toy enrichment decreased (P < 0.05) RR of pigs. Teeth clipping, tail docking and toys had no effects (P > 0.05) on ADG, body weight and mortality rate of pigs from 30 to 85 d of age. These results indicate that toy enrichment and pig processing treatments have positive effects on weaned pigs after re-location and mixing.

Mouse model of OPRM1 (A118G) polymorphism increases sociability and dominance and confers resilience to social defeat.

A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the human μ-opioid receptor gene (OPRM1 A118G) has been widely studied for its association in drug addiction, pain sensitivity, and, more recently, social behavior. The endogenous opioid system has been shown to regulate social distress and reward in a variety of animal models. However, mechanisms underlying the associations between the OPRM1 A118G SNP and these behaviors have not been clarified. We used a mouse model possessing the human equivalent nucleotide/amino acid substitution to study social affiliation and social defeat behaviors. In mice with the Oprm1 A112G SNP, we demonstrate that the G allele is associated with an increase in home-cage dominance and increased motivation for nonaggressive social interactions, similar to what is reported in human populations. When challenged by a resident aggressor, G-allele carriers expressed less submissive behavior and exhibited resilience to social defeat, demonstrated by a lack of subsequent social avoidance and reductions in anhedonia as measured by intracranial self-stimulation. Protection from social defeat in G-allele carriers was associated with a greater induction of c-fos in a resilience circuit comprising the nucleus accumbens and periaqueductal gray. These findings led us to test the role of endogenous opioids in the A112G mice. We demonstrate that the increase in social affiliation in G carriers is blocked by pretreatment with naloxone. Together, these data suggest a mechanism involving altered hedonic state and neural activation as well as altered endogenous opioid tone in the differential response to aversive and rewarding social stimuli in G-allele carriers.

Acclimation Enhances Postrelease Performance of Hatchery Fall Chinook Salmon Subyearlings While Reducing the Potential for Interaction with Natural Fish

AbstractOne form of prerelease acclimation of hatchery anadromous salmonid Oncorhynchus spp. juveniles is to truck the fish to remote points for extended holding at low densities in rearing vessels (e.g., tanks, raceways, or in‐ground ponds) supplied with river water. We conducted a 3‐year study to determine whether such acclimation enhanced the postrelease performance of hatchery fall Chinook Salmon O. tshawytscha subyearlings and reduced the potential for interaction with natural fall Chinook Salmon subyearlings. In comparison with hatchery subyearlings that were released directly into the lower Snake River just downstream of the acclimation facility, acclimated hatchery subyearlings (1) passed downstream to Lower Monumental Dam (the third dam encountered during seaward migration) faster, (2) passed the dam earlier, and (3) survived from release to the dam tailrace at higher rates. The differences in downstream passage rate and dam passage timing were also much greater between acclimated hatchery subyearlings and natural subyearlings than between directly released hatchery subyearlings and natural subyearlings. Thus, acclimation provided a survival advantage to the hatchery fish while reducing the potential for (1) aggressive and nonaggressive social interactions with natural fish while in transit through the reservoirs associated with Lower Granite, Little Goose, and Lower Monumental dams; and (2) confinement with natural fish at those three dams, where fish collection and raceway holding were followed by transport in tanker trucks. Our findings support acclimation as a method for enhancing postrelease performance of hatchery fall Chinook Salmon subyearlings and reducing their potential interactions with natural conspecifics.Received July 25, 2012; accepted January 9, 2013

Whom do the sparrows follow? The effect of kinship on social preference in house sparrow flocks

Non-aggressive social interactions between group-mates, e.g. maintenance of spatial proximity or activity synchrony are basic elements of a species' social structure, and were found to be associated with important fitness consequences in group-living animals. In the establishment of such affiliative relationships, kinship has often been identified as one of the key predictors, but this has rarely been studied in simple social groups such as flocks of gregarious birds. In this study we investigated whether kinship affects social preference, as measured by the tendency to associate with others during various social activities, in captive house sparrow (Passer domesticus) flocks where birds could interact with differently related flock-mates. We found that preference between flock-mates was correlated with familiarity from early nestling period: same-brood siblings followed their sib initiating new activities more often than non-sib birds. The strength of association between birds also tended to correlate with genetic relatedness, but this was mainly due to the effect of siblings' affiliation. Thus we concluded that house sparrows prefer the company of their siblings during social activities even well after fledging, which may facilitate kin-biased behaviours.

Maternal and peer contact during the postnatal period participate in the normal development of maternal aggression, maternal behavior, and the behavioral response to novelty

In the rat, social isolation during the early postnatal period disrupts the adult function of certain neuroendocrine and neurobehavioral systems. In the present study, we assessed the effects of peer and maternal contact during this period on the adult expression of aggression, maternal behavior, and the behavioral response to novelty. Female rat pups of the Wistar strain were reared across postnatal days 3–19 in one of the following conditions: (1) by their mother and with littermates (MR, control); (2) artificially reared in complete social isolation (AR); or (3) artificially reared in the presence of two same-age conspecifics (AR-Soc). As adults, all females were administered a resident–intruder aggression test, first in a non-maternal context (“territorial” aggression) and then in the presence of their pups (“maternal” aggression). Additionally, their maternal behavior and response to a novel object placed in a familiar open field arena were quantified. We found that maternal isolation impaired maternal behavior, increased maternal aggression, and increased the olfactory investigation of a novel object. The presence of peers prevented the effect of artificial rearing on aggression, but not its effects on maternal behavior or response to novelty. In the maternal aggression test, AR-Soc females engaged in significantly more sniffing of the intruder compared to the other two groups. The present results confirm and extend those of previous studies in a different strain (Sprague–Dawley), and indicate that peer-derived stimuli impact on the development of neurobehavioral systems underlying aggressive and non-aggressive social interactions, whereas the normal development of maternal behavior and response to novelty requires maternally derived stimuli.

When Social Situations Take a Turn for the Worse: Situational and Interpersonal Risk Factors for Sexual Aggression

This study conducted an up-to-date assessment of situational and interpersonal risk factors for sexual aggression. Two hundred undergraduate women from a medium sized college on the US west coast completed the Sexual Experiences Survey (SES) and a questionnaire developed by the authors. Participants who reported sexual victimization on the SES answered a series of questions about their most severe experience, as well as a representative, nonaggressive date. Participants who reported no sexual victimization answered questions only about a representative date. Risk factors were identified by comparing victimized participants’ sexually aggressive dates to nonvictimized participants’ dates, and victimized participants’ non-sexually aggressive dates to nonvictimized participants’ dates. Results revealed distinct situational and interpersonal differences between sexually aggressive and nonaggressive social interactions.

Impact of postnatal blockade of N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors on rat behavior: A search for a new developmental model of schizophrenia

The malfunction of glutamatergic neurotransmission in the neonatal or postnatal periods may be a risk factor for the appearance of neuroanatomical, neurochemical or functional changes that are characteristic of schizophrenia. Thus, the present study was undertaken to investigate whether blockade of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the postnatal period influences rat behavior in tests characterizing schizophrenia-like deficits such as psychomotor agitation, impairments of sensorimotor gating, working memory, and intensity of social interactions. (E)-2-amino-4-methyl-5-phosphono-3-pentenoic acid (CGP 40116), a competitive antagonist of NMDA receptors, was given postnatally (1.25 mg/kg on days 1, 3, 6, 9; 2.5 mg/kg on days 12, 15, 18; and finally 5 mg/kg on day 21, all injections s.c.), and rats were tested at 60 days old. We found that blockade of NMDA receptors in the postnatal period led to an enhancement of exploration, mimicking psychomotor agitation, impairments in sensorimotor gating as measured by a prepulse-evoked inhibition of acoustic startle response, and an impaired working memory, as measured by an increase in the latency to achieve accurate rate of response in the delayed alternation task. Decreases in non-aggressive social interactions and increases in aggressive interactions were also observed. In addition to cognitive deficits typical of schizophrenia, rats treated postnatally with NMDA receptor antagonists also showed higher level of fear exhibited in the elevated plus maze. Thus, the blockade of NMDA receptors in the postnatal period may model deficits that are characteristic of schizophrenia.

Establishment of a Battery of Simple Models for Facets of Bipolar Disorder: A Practical Approach to Achieve Increased Validity, Better Screening and Possible Insights into Endophenotypes of Disease

The lack of appropriate animal models for bipolar disorder (BPD) hinders the translation of novel molecular and genetic findings into the development of new more efficient treatments. Attempts to develop a comprehensive model for BPD did not result in a practical and valid model and at present most studies utilize a limited number of models for specific components of the disorder. Whereas there is a higher availability of models for the depression pole of BPD, only a few models represent the manic pole with the most frequently used being psychostimulant-induced hyperactivity. This last model had been important in studies of the disease and has some validity but it is clear that by itself cannot be considered to represent mania. Additional models for facets of BPD are needed to allow better screening of new drugs and new mutant mice. Such models may also support the exploration of endophenotypes of BPD and the mechanisms of the disease. An advantage of a battery approach is that each model can be only partially valid when used alone but the combination of a few models may result in strong validity. The present study suggests that such a battery can be based on existing models previously developed in the context of studying normal behavior or other disorders after an initial validation in the context of BPD. An example for this idea is described using the resident-intruder test for aggression. Present results show that 3 weeks oral treatment with 1.2-2.4% lithium (increasing doses), or 20 g/kg daily dose of valproate, significantly reduced aggressive behavior in resident mice without affecting non-aggressive social interactions. Accordingly, it is suggested that the simplified resident-intruder paradigm may model the aggression related to mania as part of a test battery for facets of BPD. It is further speculated that, pending further research, this paradigm can be combined with additional methods to explore changes in the LHPA axis that may be linked to an important endophenotype of BPD.

A simple ethological monitoring system to assess social stress in group-housed laboratory rhesus macaques.

The increasing awareness of the importance of social housing of laboratory primates results in the establishment of group housing in many facilities. Our aim was to develop a set of manageable tools to allow continuous monitoring of social relations within groups and to establish an objective, scientific ground on which changes in group composition could be based. We studied 38 adult rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) grouped as five one-male/multi-female groups using focal sampling. We recorded the occurrence and direction of aggressive and non-aggressive social interactions as well as time spent inactive in proportion to social contacts, feeding and other activities. The present analysis clearly identified low-ranking animals with none or few affiliative contacts and who also spent much time inactive and separated from other low-ranking animals. This suggests that the present approach results in useful information concerning compatibility between group members and enables identification of animals experiencing high social stress.

Social organization and aggression in a group of olfactory bulbectomized male mice

Olfactory bulbectomized and control male CF-1 strain mice were housed in separate, large, seminatural environments over a 30-day observation period. Control mice engaged in vigorous fighting behavior before a dominant animal emerged. The alpha mouse established the floor area as its territory and vigorously attacked all other mice that ventured from the second tier of the enclosure to the floor. Lower ranking mice had numerous body scars, were much less aggressive, and engaged in a variety of nonaggressive social interactions. In contrast, bulbectomized mice did not fight and roamed freely through all areas of the environment. These mice largely ignored one another, engaged in little or no social behavior, and had no body scars. When two anosmic mice came into physical contact, they appeared startled and moved away from one another. These results, together with those of prior studies, indicate that olfaction plays a critical role in virtually all aspects of social behavior in male mice.

22-28 kHz ultrasonic vocalizations associated with defensive reactions in male rats do not result from fear or aversion.

This study was carried out to determine whether 22-28 kHz vocalizations emitted during intermale interactions in adult rats were related with a state of fear, aversion or resulted from painful stimulation. Vocalizations in the 22-28 kHz range were measured in male rats during non-aggressive and aggressive social interactions; when given foot shock with a partner; during non-aggressive social interactions after an injection of (i) acetic acid (1%, IP); (ii) pentylenetetrazol (20-30 mg/kg, IP) and (iii) lithium chloride (63.8 mg/kg, IP). Ultrasonic vocalizations were consistantly detected in all rats while the animals displayed defensive or submissive postures when tested as intruders confronted with offensive residents or when administered foot shocks. Only occasional vocalizations were emitted, even in the presence of a partner, when the animals had received other painful or aversive treatments. These data support the hypothesis that 22-28 kHz vocalizations during intermale interactions are associated with defensive postures and are not the consequence of a state of fear or aversion.

The reinforcing properties of aggressive vs nonaggressive social interactions in isolated male ICR mice (Mus musculus)

Isolated male ICR mice in a T-maze consistently selected the goal box which enabled them to fight another mouse if the alternative goal box allowed no social interaction (Experiment 1). However, if the alternative choice enabled the isolated mice to interact with another mouse through a mesh screen which prevented fighting, the preference for the opportunity to fight did not appear (Experiment 2). Because the visual, olfactory, and auditory stimuli available through the screen appeared to be as attractive as the stimuli provided by the additional opportunity to fight, it is not necessary to conclude that the stimuli reinforcing the choice behavior in Experiment 1 were provided by fighting. Since there is no compelling reason to conclude that fighting is a primary reinforcer for these isolated mice, it is not necessary to argue that the high incidence of isolation-induced fighting is the reflection of a primary aggressive motive.
