Nomenclatural standards of black currant cultivars bred by Sverdlovsk Horticultural Breeding Station. Part I

In the herbarium of cultivated plants of the world, their wild relatives and weeds (WIR) a collection of nomenclatural standards for cultivars of domestic breeding is being created. Nomenclatural standards are carriers of the authenticity of the genetic information of the breeding achievements and should be kept indefinitely in the scientific herbarium collection. A herbarium sample collected with the direct participation of an expert, which can be the author of the cultivar or official representative of the author's breeding organization, is designated as the nomenclature standard. The nomenclatural standard confirms the originality of the cultivar, protects the copyright of its creators. The article publishes the nomenclature standards of 10 black currant (Ribes nigrum L.) cultivars, bred at Sverdlovsk Horticultural Breeding Station from 1983 to 1997 and included into the State Register of Breeding Achievements: Akkord (WIR-54112), Vasilisa (WIR-54115), Vympel (WIR-54118), Globus (WIR-54119), Dobry Dzhinn (WIR-54121), Pilot (WIR-54127), Slavyanka (WIR-54129), Udalets (WIR-54132), Fortuna (WIR-54133), Shaman (WIR-54134). In addition to the description of the nomenclature standards, the distinctive taxonomic and economically valuable traits of each cultivar are given. Herbarium samples of nomenclature standards are made in accordance with the recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP), registered in the database "VIR Herbarium" and included in the Herbarium of cultivated plants of the world, their wild relatives and weeds (WIR).

THE CROP-GROUP AND THE INCONSISTENT USE OF LINNEAN NAMES IN THE TAXONOMY OF DOMESTICATED PLANTS

There have been several proposals for classification categories for systematic groups of domesticated plants. In the 6th edition of the International Code for Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) only two main categories were included, the cultivar and the cultivar-group. The 7th edition of ICNCP saw the introduction of the Group to encompass the cultivar-group together with other kinds of groupings, also of unnamed material. Despite the existence of the ICNCP, many names for systematic groups of domesticated plants are still in purely Linnean form, following the rules of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN). This practice illustrates a lack of insight in the workings and logic of systematic thinking with respect to domesticated plants and muddles the borderline between the contexts of domestication and evolution. The inclusion of the Crop category in the ICNCP would accommodate the nomenclature and classification of all systematic groups of domesticated plants in one logically consistent system, setting it apart from the realm of the classical botanical classification in use for wild plants.

THE CROP CONCEPT IN CULTONOMIC CLASSIFICATION

In the 1995 International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) the cultivar and cultivar-group are used as the main categories to classify cultivated plants. In order to link the cultonomic classification to the taxonomic (botanical) classification it might be desirable to indicate to what botanical category the cultivated plants are to be assigned. This link between cultonomy and taxonomy is best established at a level above the cultivar-group. The sum total of cultivar-groups constitutes the crop, and it is suggested to recognize the crop as a culton and use it to define the relationship between groups of cultivated plants and the categories of the botanical classification governed by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN). The crop category is also the logical choice to function as denomination class. By applying the crop concept the dependence of classification and nomenclature of cultivated plants on botanical classification and nomenclature with its implicit threat of instability is reduced.

The first 56 pages of this book present an authoritative and scholarly account of the history, etymology, anomalies and rules of plant nomenclature for native and garden plants. This, the third edition, has been updated to include explanations for the International Codes for both Botanical Nomenclature (2000) and Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (1995). The second part, which is a glossary in alphabetical order comprising over 7000 generic and species terms, has been expanded to include more commemorative names. The book concludes with a comprehensive bibliography. Although there seems to be little justification in placing the morphological figures at random in the glossary, and although it would have been of interest to see a more detailed explanation for words like Sequoia and gratianopolitanus, these are very minor criticisms. Some knowledge of the phonetics of the Greek alphabet may be needed to appreciate fully all of the etymological references, and some basic Latin might also be useful, though help on this is freely available in the first part of the text. The word botany is almost certainly derived from bos, Latin for ‘cow’, and relates to ‘the study of the plants eaten by cows’ (incidentally also giving us the word ‘butter’). For those of us interested in such facts, this book is an essential reference source, enabling a greater appreciation of the origins and definitions of some of the words in our own language, as well as satisfying our curiosity about the meanings of the names that we apply to plants, and often providing us with additional descriptive information helpful in taxonomy.

The Status and the Correct Name for Watsonia ardernei (Iridaceae)

The index to volumes 1-36 of The Flowering Plants of Africa (1964) edited by R. A. Dyer, where the names used in those volumes are brought up-to-date, indicates that W. ardernei [19, t. 750 (1939)], is regarded as a synonym of W. pyramidata (Andr.) Stapf [25, t. 974 (1945)]. Mrs A. A. Mauve (nee Obermeyer), of the Botanical Research Institute, Pretoria, in a verbal communication, has informed me that they regard W. ardernei as an albino of W. pyramidata which botanically merits no taxonomic distinction. It is, however, essential to have a name to distinguish it for horticultural purposes. The earliest name given to this white-flowered plant is Watsonia iridifolia var. obrienii N.E. Br. in Gard. Chron. III, 6: 350 (1889), and if in future this taxon should again be distinguished from typical W. pyramidata, this is the epithet which will have to be used. Under the International Code of Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants, 1969, Art. 27C, the choice of epithet for a cultivar name is not based on priority, but on the best preservation of established usage.

The nature of Solanum × chaucha Juz. et Buk., a triploid cultivated potato of the South American Andes

The variation in Solanum × chauchaJuz. et Buk. (2n=3x=36) was studied using 114 accessions from the Potato Collection maintained by the International Potato Center. These accession represented less than 5% of the collection originally screened for ploidy. Twenty morphological characters of the tubers, inflorescences and leaves were scored. The accessions were grouped into 20 morphotypes on the basis of the tuber characters. Two-qualitative characters, red-anther tip and sky-blue flowers were diagnostic of 4 morphotypes, but the variation of the quantitative characters overlapped among morphotypes, and were of limited value. Electrophoretic separation of tuber proteins in 7.5% polyacrylamide gels generally confirmed the morphotype groupings. It is concluded that each of the morphotypes represents a single genotype, and these are named according to the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants. The variation within S. × chaucha apparently has been restricted by its hybrid origin.

A Few Comments on the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants

1. Southeast Asia we include in this area Assam, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Viet Nam. and southern China. 2. Indonesia, Philippines and Neiv Guinea this and area 1 are locations that are apparently rich in the Andropogoneae but which are poorly represented in our nursery. We feel that this is especially critical since these areas are considered the centers of diversity for the entire tribe.
