Notes on Eberlanzia schneideriana and Scopelogena (Ruschieae, Aizoaceae)

Eberlanzia is a small genus of eight species, which are found from south-western Namibia to Namaqualand. Eberlanzia schneideriana is characterized by its distinctly velvety leaves and several names were subsumed under it. We show that two of these, Ruschia velutina and R. pillansii, are distinct from E. schneideriana. Of these, R. velutina has the smallest flowers (petals not exceeding 3 mm long; 4–7 mm long in R. pillansii and E. schneideriana). Ruschia pillansii has a low spreading habit, whereas R. velutina and E. schneideriana are erect shrubs. The leaves are characteristically globose, with a distinct apical mucro in R. pillansii, whereas they are trigonous with at least the upper surface flattened in the other two species. The leaves of R. pillansii and E. schneideriana are typically whitish grey under dry conditions, whereas the leaves remain dirty green throughout the year in E. velutina. As a consequence of these differences, we now transfer R. pillansii and R. velutina to Eberlanzia. All three species are threatened by mining and severe overgrazing in the Richtersveld National Park. In a nomenclatural note, we validate the generic name Scopelogena L.Bolus.

Supplementary description of floral characters and nomenclatural note for the rare maple Acer yui W.P.Fang (Sapindaceae) from western China

The floral characters of Acer yui are supplemented based on living plants flowering in April from the type locality. It is distinguishable based on both vegetative and floral characters between the two morphologically similar species, A. buergerianum and A. yui. Contrary to general consideration that the holotype is at PE, A. yui did not have a holotype designated when being described. It was later inadvertently lectotypified by Fang in 1939 and the single specimen traced meets that designation should be the lectotype, and the other duplicates are isolectotypes.

Nomenclatural Notes and Typifications of Cordiaceae Names from the Flora of Argentina

During the preparation of the treatment of the family Cordiaceae for the Flora of Argentina project, some names were identified as requiring clarification following the Shenzhen Code. In this context, a lectotype is designated for Patagonula americana L. var. glabra Cham., a second-step lectotype for Varronia dichotoma Ruiz & Pav., and updates and supporting information for four names already typified by I. M. Johnston (Cordia guaranitica Chodat & Hassl., C. salicina DC., Lithocardium gerascanthus (L.) Kuntze var. puberulum Kuntze, and Saccellium lanceolatum Bonpl.) are provided. Furthermore, remarks on the type of P. tweediana Miers are provided.

The current status of Pogonodon Cope, 1880 (Carnivora: Nimravidae) and a substitution name for its junior homonym Pogonodon Bouchet, 1997 (Caenogastropoda: Triphoridae).

This nomenclatural note addresses the problem regarding the taxonomic status of the extinct large nimravid Pogonodon Cope, 1880 (Chordata. Mammalia, Nimravidae), from the Oligocene of North America and its junior homonym, the recent triphorid marine snail Pogonodon Bouchet, 1997 (Mollusca, ) from the Mediterranean. Here we propose Ionthoglossa nov. gen. as a substitute name for the latter and provide a brief history of the two taxa from the literature available.

Soliva (Asteraceae: Anthemideae) – A new generic record to the flora of Erstwhile Bihar (Jharkhand) with a note on its nomenclature

This paper reports the occurrence of Soliva anthemifolia (Juss.) Sweet (Asteraceae) from Betla National Park, Latehar, Jharkhand, hitherto unreported from the erstwhile Bihar state. Detailed description, distribution of the species along with nomenclatural note and relevant images have been provided.

Rediscovery of Pseudosinopla canaliculus (Reed, 1898) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Acanthosomatidae) with comments on its tribal classification and biogeography of South American Blaudusini

Although the knowledge of South American Acanthosomatidae has increased in the past decade, still little is known about the features or natural history of several genera. Pseudosinopla canaliculus (Reed, 1898) is a rare Acanthosomatid, known so far only from its type. In this work, rediscovery of P. canaliculus in the regions Araucania and Los Rios in Chile is reported. Part of the internal female genitalia is described. The classification of Pseudosinopla within the Acanthosomatidae is analyzed resulting in the genus being transferred from the Lanopini to Blaudusini. Additionally, the biogeography and phylogenetic relationships of the group are discussed. It is hypothesized that Pseudosinopla forms part of a Gondwanian relict. And that similarly to other heteropterans, the association among several acanthosomatids with Nothofagus Blume forests has shaped the evolutionary patterns of the group. Finally, a nomenclatural note on the Blaudusinae is provided.

Nomenclatural Notes on Some Alliances of the Halophytic Vegetation of Southern Ural and the Caspian Lowlands

AbstractThe paper presents validations of some syntaxon names of the saline vegetation of Eastern Europe (southern Russia and Kazakhstan), namely of the Carici dilutae-Juncion gerardii, Anabasio salsae-Artemision pauciflorae, Carici dilutae-Juncetum gerardii. The names of the Suaedion acuminatae, Climacoptero crassae-Suaedion acuminatae and the Suaedetum acuminatae are corrected because of erroneous selection of eponymous taxon names. We also suggest that the ‘Tamariceto-Salsolion australis’ nom. illeg. should be a synonym of the Euphorbion sequieranae.

Nomenclatural notes on Stelis ciliaris (Pleurothallidinae, Orchidaceae)

In the course of preparing a generic treatment of the genus Stelis for Flora do Paraná, southern Brazil, historical material and literature of several taxa related to Stelis ciliaris have been studied and their morphologies and nomenclature elucidated. Stelis leinigii, S. mystax-felis, and Stelis uhlii are herein proposed as new synonyms for Stelis ciliaris. A lectoptype is selected for Stelis jimenezii and a brief nomenclatural note on Stelis confusa is provided. Illustrations, updated synonym list, and taxonomic discussions are also presented for Stelis ciliaris.

Nomenclatural corrections to the taxonomic revision of The Old World species of Boehmeria (Urticaceae, tribus Boehmerieae) by Wilmot-Dear & Friis (2013)

This nomenclatural note, a sequel to a recently published taxonomic revision of the Old World species of the genus Boehmeria (Urticaceae), establishes: 1) a holotype of B. maugereti, synonym of taxon no. 8b in the revision (B. clidemioides var. diffusa); 2) B. zollingeriana Wedd. var. blinii (H.Lev.) C.J.Chen in Chen et al. (2003) as the correct name for the variety named in the revision as B. zollingeriana var. podocarpa in Chen et al. (2003); 3) that the combination B. spicata, based on Urtica spicata, is not illegitimate, as stated in the revision in synonymy of B. japonica and in an attached note; 4) a corrected synonymy for B. splitgerbera and the designation of a lectotype for Splitgerbera japonica and its nomenclatural synonyms; and 5) identifications of types for a number of excluded names: Boehmeria amaranthus, B. bodinieri, B. cavaleriei, B. martini and B. vanioiti.

Nomenclatural note on three ferns from India

Ongoing molecular phylogenetic analyses are continuously providing better resolution of phylogenetic relations of ferns (Ebihara et al. 2006,Tsutsumi et al. 2008) and nomenclatural changes are necessary to maintain uniformity (Christenhusz et al. 2011). Here contemporary names are suggested for three fern species from India. Type information is provided and barcodes of digitalized specimens are given.

RESURRECTING THE TYPE LOCALITY OF Ceropegia odorata (APOCYNACEAE) AFTER 175 YEARS

The type locality of the critically endangered Ceropegia odorata Nimmo ex J. Graham is resurrected after a lapse of about 175 years. A detailed description, distribution, habitat, IUCN threat status, and a nomenclatural note are provided along with a neotype designation. The main threat factors responsible for dwindling of populations of the species are discussed and measures are suggested to arrest the operative causal factors.

Notes on Early Land Plants Today. 38. New combinations and synonyms in Lepidoziaceae (Marchantiophyta)

Cooper (2013) summarizes the current status of the family Lepidoziaceae and presents a new classification based on recent phylogenetic studies (Cooper et al. 2011, 2012). The classification requires many transfers of taxa and the new combinations and a new synonym are reported here. Ceramanus gen. nov. is newly described and Tricholepidozia comb. et stat. nov. elevated to generic rank. Several of the species require lectotypification, but this is beyond the scope of this nomenclatural note and lectotypes are designated only in two unambiguous cases.

Annulata örstediana: publication dates, composition and annotated taxonomic list, with some comments on Hemipodus (Polychaeta: Glyceridae)

The collecting trips by Ørsted and Kröyer in Central and South America resulted in a series of papers by Grube, the Annulata örstediana which contained the proposal for seven genera and descriptions for 84 species. There are some problems dealing with the correct number of contributions, their publication dates, the correct citation for the authors for each species name and sometimes even for the type locality. In order to improve the current situation, we have consulted the original publications together with the corresponding collections. Our results indicate that there were only three parts in the series which were published in the journal, and repagination in reprints sometimes caused some further confusion. Additionally, we provided some review comments on the species current status and we added a short nomenclatural note on Hemipodus (Polychaeta: Glyceridae) trying to clarify the correct generic name and type species.

Two new species of Rhagovelia from Colombia (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Veliidae) with revised keys to the Colombian species in the torquata and robusta groups

Two new species of the Rhagovelia in the torquata and robusta species groups, R. divisoensis sp. n. and R. victoria sp. n.,are described and compared with other allied species. Rhagovelia divisoensis sp. n. constitutes the first record of the torquata group from Colombia. A nomenclatural note is also presented correcting the orthography of R. narinensis.

New species and new records of Veliidae from Espírito Santo State and adjacent Minas Gerais State, Brazil, with notes on nomenclature (Insecta: Heteroptera: Gerromorpha)

A review of the Veliidae occurring in Espírito Santo State, Brazil, is presented. The following new taxa are described: Oiovelia brasiliensis sp. nov., Paravelia capixaba sp. nov., Rhagovelia vaniniae sp. nov., R. mangle sp. nov., R. teresa sp. nov., R. denticulata sp. nov. and R. sooretama sp. nov. Husseyella halophila, Microvelia ayacuchana, and Stridulivelia quadrispinosa are recorded for the first time from southeastern Brazil. Microvelia longipes, M. mimula, M. venustatis, R. accedens, R. bocaina, R. elegans, R. hambletoni, R. itatiaiana, R. robusta, R. tenuipes, R. triangula, R. trianguloides, R. zela and S. tersa are recorded for the first time from Espírito Santo State. The occurrence of H. diffidens in Espírito Santo is confirmed. Additional records from the Caparaó mountain range are presented for M. mimula, R. accedens, R. aiuruoca and R. triangula. A necessary nomenclatural note concerning R. ochroischion, R. sbolos, R. trianguloides and R. turmalis is presented.

A New Combination in Pleopeltis and Some Nomenclatural Notes Related to Illustrations Validating Fern Names

We present the new combination Pleopeltis minima (Bory) J. Prado & R. Y. Hirai and we selected a lectotype for Marginaria minima described by Bory, based on material from southern Brazil. This taxon has a wide range in the southern part of South America and it has been recognized in the rank of species and/or variety by several previous authors, but its correct name has been misleading. Recently it has been treated as a member of Pleopeltis, but with a wrong epithet. The nomenclatural mistake involving this species arose because there are different interpretations of some nomenclatural rules defined in the IBCN. A similar misunderstanding of the same rule is also discussed for a species in Lindsaea.
