Monogamy relations of entropic non-contextual inequalities and their experimental demonstration

We analyze monogamous relationships of abritrary entropic non-contextuality (ENC) inequalities via a graph theoretic approach. While ENC inequalities are important in quantum information theory, a theoretical and experimental understanding of their monogamous nature is still elusive. We analyze conditions for ENC inequalities to exhibit a monogamous relationship and derive the same explicitly for an entropic version of the Bell-CHSH scenario. Next, we consider two different sets of three qubit states and experimentally show that they exhibit monogamy of entropic Bell-CHSH inequality. The monogamous relationship of these inequalities is theoretically exhibited via an insightful proof and is experimentally demonstrated on an NMR quantum information processor. We also develop a novel and easy-to-implement experimental method to evaluate entropies on an NMR quantum information processor using only the information about expectation values of the observables.

Experimental demonstration of the violation of the temporal Peres-Mermin inequality using contextual temporal correlations and noninvasive measurements

We present a generalized quantum scattering circuit which can be used to perform non-invasive quantum measurements, and implement it on NMR qubits. Such a measurement is a key requirement for testing temporal non-contextual inequalities. We use this circuit to experimentally demonstrate the violation of the Peres-Mermin inequality (which is the temporal analog of a Klyachko-Can- Binicioglu-Shumovsky (KCBS) inequality), on a three-qubit NMR quantum information processor. Further, we experimentally demonstrate the violation of a transformed Bell-type inequality (the spatial equivalent of the temporal KCBS inequality) and show that its Tsirelson bound is the same as that for the temporal KCBS inequality. In the temporal KCBS scenario, the contextual bound is strictly lower than the quantum temporal and nonlocal bounds.

True experimental reconstruction of quantum states and processes via convex optimization

We use a constrained convex optimization (CCO) method to experimentally characterize arbitrary quantum states and unknown quantum processes on a two-qubit NMR quantum information processor. Standard protocols for quantum state and quantum process tomography are based on linear inversion, which often result in an unphysical density matrix and hence an invalid process matrix. The CCO method, on the other hand, produces physically valid density matrices and process matrices, with significantly improved fidelity as compared to the standard methods. We use the CCO method to estimate the Kraus operators and characterize gates in the presence of errors due to decoherence. We then assume Markovian system dynamics and use a Lindblad master equation in conjunction with the CCO method, to completely characterize the noise processes present in the NMR system.

Enhancing NMR Quantum Computation by Exploring Heavy Metal Complexes as Multiqubit Systems: A Theoretical Investigation.

Assembled together with the most common qubits used in nuclear resonance magnetic (NMR) quantum computation experiments, spin-1/2 nuclei, such as 113Cd, 199Hg, 125Te, and 77Se, could leverage the prospective scalable quantum computer architectures, enabling many and heteronuclear qubits for NMR quantum information processing (QIP) implementations. A computational design strategy for prescreening recently synthesized complexes of cadmium, mercury, tellurium, selenium, and phosphorus (called MRE complexes) as suitable qubit molecules for NMR QIP is reported. Chemical shifts and spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) in five MRE complexes were examined using the spin-orbit zeroth order regular approximation (ZORA) at the density functional theory level and the four-component relativistic Dirac-Kohn-Sham approach. In particular, the influence of different conformers, basis sets, exchange-correlation functionals, and methods to treat the relativistic as well as solvent effects were studied. The differences in the chemical shifts and SSCCs between different low energy conformers of the studied complexes were found to be very small. The TZ2P basis set was found to be the optimum choice for the studied chemical shifts, while the TZ2P-J basis set was the best for the couplings studied in this work. The PBE0 exchange-correlation functional exhibited the best performance for the studied MRE complexes. The addition of solvent effects has not improved on the gas phase results in comparison to the experiment, with the exception of the phosphorus chemical shift. The use of MRE complexes as qubit molecules for NMR QIP could face the challenges in single qubit control and multiqubit operations. They exhibit chemical shifts appropriately dispersed, allowing qubit addressability and exceptionally large spin-spin couplings, which could reduce the time of quantum gate operations and likely preserve the coherence.

Experimental demonstration of fully contextual quantum correlations on an NMR quantum information processor

The existence of contextuality in quantum mechanics is a fundamental departure from the classical description of the world. Currently, the quest to identify scenarios which cannot be more contextual than quantum theory is at the forefront of research in quantum contextuality. In this work, we experimentally test two inequalities, which are capable of revealing fully contextual quantum correlations, on a Hilbert space of dimension 8 and 4 respectively, on an NMR quantum information processor. The projectors associated with the contextuality inequalities are first reformulated in terms of Pauli operators, which can be determined in an NMR experiment. We also analyze the behavior of each inequality under rotation of the underlying quantum state, which unitarily transforms it to another pure state.

Experimental classification of entanglement in arbitrary three-qubit pure states on an NMR quantum information processor

We undertake experimental detection of the entanglement present in arbitrary three-qubit pure quantum states on an NMR quantum information processor. Measurements of only four observables suffice to experimentally differentiate between the six classes of states which are inequivalent under stochastic local operation and classical communication (SLOCC). The experimental realization is achieved by mapping the desired observables onto Pauli $z$-operators of a single qubit, which is directly amenable to measurement. The detection scheme is applied to known entangled states as well as to states randomly generated using a generic scheme that can construct all possible three-qubit states. The results are substantiated via direct full quantum state tomography as well as via negativity calculations and the comparison suggests that the protocol is indeed successful in detecting tripartite entanglement without requiring any {\it a priori} information about the states.

Superposing pure quantum states with partial prior information

The principle of superposition is an intriguing feature of quantum mechanics, which is regularly exploited in many different circumstances. A recent work [M. Oszmaniec et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 110403 (2016)] shows that the fundamentals of quantum mechanics restrict the process of superimposing two unknown pure states, even though it is possible to superimpose two quantum states with partial prior knowledge. The prior knowledge imposes geometrical constraints on the choice of input states. We discuss an experimentally feasible protocol to superimpose multiple pure states of a $d$-dimensional quantum system and carry out an explicit experimental realization for two single-qubit pure states with partial prior information on a two-qubit NMR quantum information processor.

Efficient experimental design of high-fidelity three-qubit quantum gates via genetic programming

We have designed efficient quantum circuits for the three-qubit Toffoli (controlled–controlled-NOT) and the Fredkin (controlled-SWAP) gate, optimized via genetic programming methods. The gates thus obtained were experimentally implemented on a three-qubit NMR quantum information processor, with a high fidelity. Toffoli and Fredkin gates in conjunction with the single-qubit Hadamard gates form a universal gate set for quantum computing and are an essential component of several quantum algorithms. Genetic algorithms are stochastic search algorithms based on the logic of natural selection and biological genetics and have been widely used for quantum information processing applications. We devised a new selection mechanism within the genetic algorithm framework to select individuals from a population. We call this mechanism the “Luck-Choose” mechanism and were able to achieve faster convergence to a solution using this mechanism, as compared to existing selection mechanisms. The optimization was performed under the constraint that the experimentally implemented pulses are of short duration and can be implemented with high fidelity. We demonstrate the advantage of our pulse sequences by comparing our results with existing experimental schemes and other numerical optimization methods.

Experimental demonstration of selective quantum process tomography on an NMR quantum information processor

We present the first NMR implementation of a scheme for selective and efficient quantum process tomography without ancilla. We generalize this scheme such that it can be implemented efficiently using only a set of measurements involving product operators. The method allows us to estimate any element of the quantum process matrix to a desired precision, provided a set of quantum states can be prepared efficiently. Our modified technique requires fewer experimental resources as compared to the standard implementation of selective and efficient quantum process tomography, as it exploits the special nature of NMR measurements to allow us to compute specific elements of the process matrix by a restrictive set of sub-system measurements.To demonstrate the efficacy of our scheme, we experimentally tomograph the processes corresponding to `no operation', a controlled-NOT (CNOT), and a controlled-Hadamard gate on a two-qubit NMR quantum information processor, with high fidelities.

Evolution of tripartite entangled states in a decohering environment and their experimental protection using dynamical decoupling

We embarked upon the task of experimental protection of different classes of tripartite entangled states, namely the maximally entangled GHZ and W states and the ${\rm W \bar{W}}$ state, using dynamical decoupling. The states were created on a three-qubit NMR quantum information processor and allowed to evolve in the naturally noisy NMR environment. Tripartite entanglement was monitored at each time instant during state evolution, using negativity as an entanglement measure. It was found that the W state is most robust while the GHZ-type states are most fragile against the natural decoherence present in the NMR system. The ${\rm W \bar{W}}$ state which is in the GHZ-class, yet stores entanglement in a manner akin to the W state, surprisingly turned out to be more robust than the GHZ state. The experimental data were best modeled by considering the main noise channel to be an uncorrelated phase damping channel acting independently on each qubit, alongwith a generalized amplitude damping channel. Using dynamical decoupling, we were able to achieve a significant protection of entanglement for GHZ states. There was a marginal improvement in the state fidelity for the W state (which is already robust against natural system decoherence), while the ${\rm W \bar{W}}$ state showed a significant improvement in fidelity and protection against decoherence.

Experimental protection of arbitrary states in a two-qubit subspace by nested Uhrig dynamical decoupling

We experimentally demonstrate the efficacy of a three-layer nested Uhrig dynamical decoupling (NUDD) sequence to preserve arbitrary quantum states in a two-dimensional subspace of the four-dimensional two-qubit Hilbert space, on an NMR quantum information processor. The effect of the state preservation is studied first on four known states, including two product states and two maximally entangled Bell states. Next, to evaluate the preservation capacity of the NUDD scheme, we apply it to eight randomly generated states in the subspace. Although, the preservation of different states varies, the scheme on the average performs very well. The complete tomographs of the states at different time points are used to compute fidelity. State fidelities using NUDD protection are compared with those obtained without using any protection. The nested pulse schemes are complex in nature and require careful experimental implementation.

Value of NMR Parameters and DFT Calculations for Quantum Information Processing Utilizing Phosphorus Heterocycles

Quantum computing is the field of science that uses quantum-mechanical phenomena, such as superposition and entanglement, to perform operations on data. The fundamental information unit used in quantum computing is the quantum bit or qubit. It is well-known that quantum computers could theoretically be able to solve problems much more quickly than any classical computers. Currently, the first and still the most successful implementations of quantum information processing (QIP) have been based on nuclear spins in liquids. However, molecules that enable many qubits NMR QIP implementations should meet some conditions: have large chemical shifts and be appropriately dispersed for qubit addressability, appreciable spin-spin coupling between any pair of spins, and a long relaxation time. In this line, benzyldene-2,3-dihydro-1H-[1,3]diphosphole (BDF) derivatives have been theoretically tested for maximizing large chemical shifts, spin-spin coupling, and minimizing the hyperfine coupling constant. Thus, the structures were optimized at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level and showed a significant similarity with the experimental geometrical parameters. The NMR spectroscopic parameters (δ and J) were calculated with six different DFT functionals. The τ-HCTH/6-31G(2d) level is in better agreement with the experimental data of 31P and 13C chemical shifts, while PCM-B3LYP/cc-pVDZ level shows a decrease on deviation between calculated and experimental values for P-P and P-C SSCC. The surface response technique was employed to rationalize how the hyperfine constant varies with the chemical shifts and coupling constants values. From our findings, BDF-NO2 was the best candidate for NMR quantum computations (NMR-QC) among the studied series.

Entanglement detection on an NMR quantum-information processor using random local measurements

Random local measurements have recently been proposed to construct entanglement witnesses and thereby detect the presence of bipartite entanglement. We experimentally demonstrate the efficacy of one such scheme on a two-qubit NMR quantum information processor. We show that a set of three random local measurements suffices to detect the entanglement of a general two-qubit state. We experimentally generate states with different amounts of entanglement, and show that the scheme is able to clearly witness entanglement. We perform complete quantum state tomography for each state and compute state fidelity to validate our results. Further, we extend previous results and perform a simulation using random local measurements to optimally detect bipartite entanglement in a hybrid system of $2\otimes 3$ dimensionality.

Constructing valid density matrices on an NMR quantum information processor via maximum likelihood estimation

Estimation of quantum states is an important step in any quantum information processing experiment. A naive reconstruction of the density matrix from experimental measurements can often give density matrices which are not positive, and hence not physically acceptable. How do we ensure that at all stages of reconstruction, we keep the density matrix positive? Recently a method has been suggested based on maximum likelihood estimation, wherein the density matrix is guaranteed to be positive definite. We experimentally implement this protocol on an NMR quantum information processor. We discuss several examples and compare with the standard method of state estimation.

NMR investigation of contextuality in a quantum harmonic oscillator via pseudospin mapping

Physical potentials are routinely approximated to harmonic potentials. Hence it is important to know when a quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) behaves quantum mechanically and when classically. Recently Su et al. (Phys. Rev. A, 85 (2012) 052126) have theoretically shown that QHO exhibits quantum contextuality (QC) for a certain set of pseudospin observables. Here we encode the four eigenstates of a QHO onto four Zeeman product states of a pair of spin-(1/2) nuclei. Using the techniques of NMR quantum information processing, we then demonstrate the violation of both state-dependent and state-independent inequalities arising from the noncontextual hidden variable model.

Ancilla-Assisted Measurements on Quantum Ensembles: General Protocols and Applications in NMR Quantum Information Processing

Quantum ensembles form easily accessible architectures for studying various phenomena in quantum physics, quantum information science, and spectroscopy. Here we review some recent protocols for measurements in quantum ensembles by utilizing ancillary systems. We also illustrate these protocols experimentally via nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. In particular, we shall review noninvasive measurements, extracting expectation values of various operators, characterizations of quantum states, and quantum processes, and finally quantum noise engineering.

Experimental construction of aWsuperposition state and its equivalence to the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state under local filtration

We experimentally construct a novel three-qubit entangled W-superposition ($\rm W \bar{\rm W}$) state on an NMR quantum information processor. We give a measurement-based filtration protocol for the invertible local operation (ILO) that converts the $\rm W \bar{\rm W}$ state to the GHZ state, using a register of three ancilla qubits. Further we implement an experimental protocol to reconstruct full information about the three-party $\rm W \bar{\rm W}$ state using only two-party reduced density matrices. An intriguing fact unearthed recently is that the $\rm W \bar{\rm W}$ state which is equivalent to the GHZ state under ILO, is in fact reconstructible from its two-party reduced density matrices, unlike the GHZ state. We hence demonstrate that although the $\rm W \bar{\rm W}$ state is interconvertible with the GHZ state, it stores entanglement very differently.

Time-optimized quantum QFT gate in an Ising coupling system

Quantum Fourier transform (QFT) is a quantum analogue of the classical discrete Fourier transform. It is a fundamental quantum gate in quantum algorithms which has an exponential advantage over the classical computation and has been excessively studied. Normally, an n-qubit quantum Fourier transform could be resolved into the tensor product of n single-qubit operations, and each operation could be implemented by a Hadamard gate and a controlled phase gate. Then the complexity of an n-qubit QFT is of order O(n2). To reduce the complexity of quantum operations, optimal control (OC) method has recently been used successfully to find the minimum time for implementing a quantum operation. Up to now, two types of quantum optimal control methods have been presented, i.e. analytical and numerical methods. The analytical approach is to change the problem of efficient synthesis of unitary transformations into the geometrical one of finding the shortest paths. Numerical optimal control procedures are based on the gradient methods (GRAPE, Gradient Ascent Pulse Engineering) and Krotov methods. Notable application mainly focus on nuclear magnetic resonance fields, including imaging, liquid-state NMR, solid-state NMR, and NMR quantum computation. One obvious advantage of optimal control NMR quantum computation is that the OC unitary evolution transformation pulse sequences are normally shorter than the conventional corresponding ones. Here we use the optimal control method to find the minimum duration for implementing QFT quantum gate. A linear spin chain with nearest-neighbor Ising interaction is used to find the optimization. And the optimized pulse sequence is experimentally demonstrated on an NMR quantum information processor. By using optimal control method with numerical calculation, a three-qubit QFT in an indirect-linear-coupling chain system is optimized. The duration of the OC QFT is obviously shorter than that of conventional approaches. The OC pulse sequence has been experimentally implemented on a liquid-state NMR spectrometer. To verify the optimally controlled pulse sequence for the three-qubit QFT, different initial states are assumed. The accuracy of the OC pulse sequence could be demonstrated by the consistency of theoretical simulation spectra with the experimental results. The good consistency between the simulation and the experimental spectra demonstrates that the OC QFT is of high fidelity.

Experimental protection against evolution of states in a subspace via a super-Zeno scheme on an NMR quantum information processor

We experimentally demonstrate the freezing of evolution of quantum states in one- and two-dimensional subspaces of two qubits, on an NMR quantum information processor. State evolution was frozen and leakage of the state from its subspace to an orthogonal subspace was successfully prevented using super-Zeno sequences, comprising of a set of inverting radio frequency (rf) pulses punctuated by pre-selected time intervals. We demonstrate the efficacy of the scheme by preserving different types of states, including separable and maximally entangled states in one- and two-dimensional subspaces of two qubits. The change in the experimental density matrices was tracked by carrying out full state tomography at several time points. We use the fidelity measure for the one-dimensional case and the leakage (fraction) into the orthogonal subspace for the two-dimensional case, as qualitative indicators to estimate the resemblance of the density matrix at a later time to the initially prepared density matrix. For the case of entangled states, we additionally compute an entanglement parameter to indicate the presence of entanglement in the state at different times. We experimentally demonstrate that the super-Zeno scheme is able to successfully confine state evolution to the one- or two-dimensional subspace being protected.
