Scytinostromabambusinum sp. nov. (Russulales, Basidiomycota) in China evidenced by morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses.

Wood-rotting fungi as an important group within the Basidiomycota are known for their ecological role in the forest ecosystem in terms of decaying living and dead trees and recycling nutrients in forest ecosystems. Many new species were revealed in the last five years. In the present study, during an ongoing study on Scytinostroma, a new species of Scytinostroma was found from China. It is described and illustrated on the basis of the morphological and phylogenetic evidence. Scytinostromabambusinum sp. nov. is described as a new species, based on morphological and molecular evidence. It is characterised by annual, resupinate and broadly ellipsoid basidiomata with white to cream hymenophore, a dimitic hyphal structure with generative hyphae bearing simple septa, the presence of cystidioles and amyloid basidiospores measuring 5.5-7 × 4-5.3 µm. Phylogeny, based on molecular data of ITS and nLSU sequences, shows that the new species forms an independent lineage and is different in morphology from the existing species of Scytinostroma.

Morphological and molecular identification for four new wood-inhabiting species of Trechispora (Basidiomycota) from China.

Four new wood-inhabiting fungi, Trechisporaalbofarinosa, T.bisterigmata, T.pileata and T.wenshanensisspp. nov., are proposed based on a combination of morphological features and molecular evidence. Trechisporaalbofarinosa is characterized by the farinose basidiomata with flocculence hymenial surface, a monomitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, and ellipsoid, warted basidiospores. Trechisporabisterigmata is characterized by the membranous basidiomata with odontioid hymenial surface, rhizomorphic sterile margin, barrelled basidia and subglobose to broad ellipsoid, smooth basidiospores. Trechisporapileata is characterized by the laterally contracted base, solitary or imbricate basidiomata, fan shaped pileus, radially striate-covered surface with appressed scales, odontioid hymenophore surface, and subglobose to broad ellipsoid, thin-walled, smooth basidiospores. Trechisporawenshanensis is characterized by a cottony basidiomata with a smooth hymenial surface, and ellipsoid, thin-walled, warted basidiospores. Sequences of ITS and LSU marker of the studied samples were generated, and phylogenetic analyses were performed with the maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian inference methods. The phylogenetic tree inferred from the ITS+nLSU sequences highlighted that four new species were grouped into the genus Trechispora.

Perenniporiopsis srijayewardenepurana sp. nov. and validation of Pyrrhoderma nigrum in Sri Lanka

Polypores, a diverse group of macrofungi belonging to Basidiomycota, are widespread in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. In this study, four polyporoid specimens were collected in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. Based on multilocus phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS and nLSU sequence data, along with morphological characteristics, the specimens were identified as Pyrrhoderma nigrum (Pyrrhoderma “nigra”) and a novel species of a recently described genus Perenniporiopsis. The new species was named P. srijayewardenepurana, while P. nigrum, which has not been validly published previously, is validated in this publication.

Morphological and molecular identification for two new species of wood-inhabiting macrofungi (Basidiomycota) from Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, China

Two new wood-inhabiting macrofungal species, Coniophora yunnanensis and Resupinatus yunnanensis are proposed based on a combination of morphological features and molecular evidence. Coniophora yunnanensis is characterized by annual basidiomata with odontoid hymenophore with olivaceous to brown hymenial surfaces, a monomitic hyphal system with simple septate generative hyphae, and yellowish basidiospores. While, R. yunnanensis is characterized by resupinate to cupulate basidiomata with greyish to greyish-brown hymenophore, a monomitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae and ellipsoid basidiospores measuring as 4.5–9 × 3.5–7 µm. The phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data of ITS+nLSU sequences showed that C. yunnanensis and R. yunnanensis nested within Agaricomycetidae, in which C. yunnanensis clustered into the family Coniophoraceae (Boletales), and R. yunnanensis grouped into family Pleurotaceae (Agaricales). The phylogenetic tree derived from ITS sequences revealed that C. yunnanensis grouped into genus Coniophora, in which it grouped with C. marmorata. Additionally, R. yunnanensis clustered into genus Resupinatus and then was sister to R. conspersus.

Physisporinus yunnanensis sp. nov. (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) from Southern China

A wood-inhabiting fungal species, Physisporinus yunnanensis is proposed based on a combination of morphological features and molecular evidence. Physisporinus yunnanensis is characterized by annual, resupinate, bone-hard basidiomata with an olivaceous to black pore surface, a monomitic hyphal system, presence of hyphoid cystidia at dissepiment edge and subglobose, smooth basidiospores measuring as 4–5.5 × 3.5–5 µm, and causing a white rot. The phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data of ITS+nLSU sequences showed that P. yunnanensis is sister to P. furcatus with high support (100% BS, 100% BP, 1.00 BPP). Both morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analyses confirmed the placement of the new species in Physisporinus.

Phylogeny and morphology reveal a new species of Chlorociboria (Chlorociboriaceae, Leotiomycetes) from southwestern China

A new species, Chlorociboria daliensis, was discovered on decayed decorticated wood in Yunnan Province, southwestern China. Chlorociboria daliensis can be distinguished from other Chlorociboria species by the colour of their discs which are light blue when fresh, pale yellowish-green, green or dark green when dry, branched paraphyses, cylindric or subclavate asci with J+, apical ring in Melzer’s reagent, elongate-ellipsoidal ascospores, and tomentum hyphae which are mostly absent. Phylogenetic analyses based on nLSU and ITS sequence data showed that C. daliensis forms a monophyletic group with a 99% maximum likelihood bootstrap support. The results of the pairwise homoplasy index (PHI) test revealed no significant genetic recombination (Φw = 1.0) between the closely related C. daliensis and C. poutoensis. The current study introduces the new species, C. daliensis, with a detailed description, illustrations, and a taxonomic key for Chlorociboria.

Taxonomic studies of bluish Mycena (Mycenaceae, Agaricales) with two new species from northern China.

Bluish Mycena are rare, but constitute a taxonomically complex group. A total of eight bluish species in four sections have previously been reported from North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia. Two species with a blue pileus, collected in China during our taxonomic study of Mycena s.l., are described here as new to science: Mycenacaeruleogrisea sp. nov. and M.caeruleomarginata sp. nov. Detailed descriptions, line drawings and a morphological comparison with closely-related species, especially herbarium specimens of M.subcaerulea from the USA, are provided. The results of Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic analyses of a dataset of 96 nuclear rDNA ITS and 20 nLSU sequences of 43 Mycena species are also presented. The morphological data and the results of the phylogenetic analyses support the introduction of M.caeruleogrisea and M.caeruleomarginata as new species. A taxonomic key to bluish Mycena species of sections Amictae, Cyanocephalae, Sacchariferae and Viscipelles is provided.

Taxonomy and molecular phylogeny of Trametopsis (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) with descriptions of two new species.

Trametopsis is a worldwide genus belonging to Irpicaceae in the phlebioid clade, which can cause a white decay of wood. Previously, only three species were ascribed to the genus. In this study, we performed a morphological and phylogenetic study of Trametopsis. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of multiple loci included the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, the large subunit nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nLSU), the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB1), the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2) and the translation elongation factor 1-α gene (TEF1). Phylogenetic trees were inferred from the combined datasets of ITS+nLSU sequences and ITS+nLSU+RPB1+RPB2+TEF1 sequences by using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses. Combined with molecular data, morphological characters and ecological traits, two new species of Trametopsis are discovered. Trametopsisabieticola is characterised by its pileate, solitary or imbricate basidiomata, buff to buff-yellow pileal surface when fresh, becoming pinkish buff to clay-buff when dry, cream to buff pore surface when fresh, becoming pinkish buff to greyish brown upon drying, round to angular and large pores (0.5-1 per mm), cylindrical basidiospores (5.8-7.2 × 1.9-2.6 μm), distributed in the high altitude of mountains and grows on Abies sp. Trametopsistasmanica is characterised by its resupinate basidiomata, cream to pinkish-buff pore surface when fresh, becoming honey-yellow to snuff brown upon drying, cylindrical basidiospores (5.2-6.3 × 1.8-2.2 μm), and by growing on Eucalyptus sp. Detailed descriptions and illustrations of the two novel species are provided.

Outline, Divergence Times, and Phylogenetic Analyses of Trechisporales (Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota).

Phylogenetic analyses inferred from the nuc rDNA ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS) data set and the combined 2-locus data set [5.8S + nuc 28S rDNA (nLSU)] of taxa of Trechisporales around the world show that Sistotremastrum family forms a monophyletic lineage within Trechisporales. Bayesian evolutionary and divergence time analyses on two data sets of 5.8S and nLSU sequences indicate an ancient divergence of Sistotremastrum family from Hydnodontaceae during the Triassic period (224.25 Mya). Sistotremastrum family is characterized by resupinate and thin basidiomata, smooth, verruculose, or odontoid-semiporoid hymenophore, a monomitic hyphal structure, and generative hyphae bearing clamp connections, the presence of cystidia and hyphidia in some species, thin-walled, smooth, inamyloid, and acyanophilous basidiospores. In addition, four new species, namely, Trechispora dentata, Trechispora dimitiella, Trechispora fragilis, and Trechispora laevispora, are described and illustrated. In addition, three new combinations, namely, Brevicellicium daweishanense, Brevicellicium xanthum, and Sertulicium limonadense, are also proposed.

Global diversity and systematics of Hymenochaetaceae with poroid hymenophore

Taxonomy and phylogeny of poroid Hymenochaetaceae based on the most comprehensive phylogenetic analyses are presented. A phylogeny based on a combined dataset of ITS and nLSU sequences for accepted genera of Hymenochaetaceae was analyzed and two or multigene phylogenies for most species of ten large genera including Coltricia, Fomitiporella, Fomitiporia, Fulvifomes, Fuscoporia, Inonotus, Phylloporia, Porodaedalea, Sanghuangporus and Tropicoporus, were carried out. Based on samples from 37 countries of five continents, seven new genera, Meganotus, Neophellinus, Nothonotus, Pachynotus, Perenninotus, Pseudophylloporia and Rigidonotus, are introduced, 37 new species, Coltricia tibetica, Fomitiporella crassa, F. queenslandica, Fomitiporia eucalypti, F. gatesii, F. ovoidospora, Fulvifomes azonatus, F. caligoporus, F. costaricense, F. floridanus, F. jouzaii, F. nakasoneae, F. subindicus, Fuscoporia sinuosa, F. submurina, Inonotus subradiatus, I. vietnamensis, Neomensularia castanopsidis, Pachynotus punctatus, Phellinus cuspidatus, P. subellipsoideus, Phylloporia minutissima, P. tabernaemontanae, Porodaedalea occidentiamericana, P. orientoamericana, P. qilianensis, P. schrenkianae, Pseudophylloporia australiana, Sanghuangporus australianus, S. lagerstroemiae, Tropicoporus angustisulcatus, T. hainanicus, T. lineatus, T. minus, T. ravidus, T. substratificans and T. tenuis, are described, and 108 new combinations are proposed. In addition, one illegitimate name and two invalid names are renamed, and Coltricia and Coltriciella were synonymized. The taxonomic relevance and limits of the new taxa are discussed. Photos and illustrations for 37 new species are presented, and a full description for each new species is given. Eventually, this study recognizes 672 species in 34 genera and provides a modern treatment of the poroid Hymenochaetaceae in the world. A key to the accepted poroid genera of Hymenochaetaceae is provided, and identification keys to the accepted species of 32 poroid genera worldwide are given. A synopsis description of each species is included in these keys.

Crepidotus yuanchui sp. nov. and C. caspari found in subalpine areas of China.

Only a few Crepidotus species have been previously reported from subalpine areas of China. Members of Crepidotus possessing an orange-yellow pileus are rare in China as well. Here, we describe Crepidotus yuanchui, a new species characterized by an orange-yellow pileus, ovoid basidiospores, and abundant cylindric to narrowly utriform cheilocystidia. This species is widely distributed above 2000 m asl in Yunnan Province. In addition, C. caspari, which is a distinct species based on its combined characteristics of smooth basidiospores and clamp connections, is newly recorded and detailed from subalpine China. The results of phylogenetic analyses of ITS + nLSU sequences based on maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods support the recognition of these two species. Photographs, descriptions, line drawings, and comparisons of related species are provided.

Xylodon bambusinus and X. xinpingensis spp. nov. (Hymenochaetales) from southern China

Two new species, Xylodon bambusinus and X. xinpingensis, are proposed based on morphological and molecular evidences. Both species share the annual growth habit, resupinate basidiomata and monomitic hyphal system with clamped, colorless generative hyphae, smooth, thin-walled basidiospores, but X. bambusinus is characterized by the smooth to tuberculate hymenial surface, presence of capitate and fusiform cystidia, broad ellipsoid basidiospores, while X. xinpingensis by the reticulate hymenophore with cream hymenial surface, and subglobose basidiospores (4.5–6 × 3.5–5 µm). Sequences of ITS and LSU nrRNA gene regions of the studied samples were generated, and phylogenetic analyses were performed with maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference methods. The phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data of ITS and ITS+nLSU sequences showed that X. bambusinus was sister to X. subclavatus, while X. xinpingensis grouped with X. astrocystidiatus and X. paradoxus. The nLSU dataset revealed that X. bambusinus grouped with X. asperus and X. brevisetus with lower supports, and that X. xinpingensis grouped with X. astrocystidiatus and X. paradoxus and then with X. rimosissimus without supports. Both morphological and molecular evidences confirmed the placement of two new species in Xylodon. Description and figures from the new species and a key to the known species of Xylodon from China are presented.

The Phylogenetic Relationship Revealed Three New Wood-Inhabiting Fungal Species From Genus Trechispora

Wood-inhabiting fungi play a significant role in wood degradation and the cycle of matter in the ecological system. In the present study, three new wood-inhabiting fungal species, Trechispora bambusicola, Trechispora fimbriata, and Trechispora fissurata spp. nov., are nested in Trechispora, which are proposed based on a combination of morphological features and molecular evidence. Sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (nLSU) regions of the studied samples were generated, and the phylogenetic analyses were performed with maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian inference methods. The phylogenetic analyses inferred from ITS showed that T. bambusicola was sister to Trechispora stevensonii, T. fimbriata grouped with Trechispora nivea, and T. fissurata grouped with Trechispora echinospora. The phylogenetic tree based on ITS + nLSU sequences demonstrated that T. bambusicola formed a single lineage and then grouped with Trechispora rigida and T. stevensonii. T. fimbriata was sister to T. nivea. T. fissurata grouped with Trechispora thelephora.

Hyphoderma fissuratum and H. mopanshanense spp. nov. (Polyporales) from southern China.

Two new species, Hyphoderma fissuratum and H. mopanshanense spp. nov., are proposed based on morphological and molecular evidences. Hyphoderma fissuratum is characterized by resupinate basidiomata with cracking hymenial surface, a monomitic hyphal system with generative hyphae bearing clamp connections, IKI-, CB-, and cylindrical, colorless, thin-walled, smooth basidiospores measuring (8.5-10.3 × 3-4 µm). Hyphoderma mopanshanense is characterized by an annual growth habit, slight gray to cream hymenial surface, and fusiform, thick-walled cystidia apically encrusted with crystal. Sequences of ITS and LSU nrRNA gene regions of the studied samples were generated, and phylogenetic analyses were performed with maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference methods. These phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data of ITS and nLSU sequences showed that two Hyphoderma new species formed a well supported monophyletic lineage distinct from other related species and then H. fissuratum grouped with H. medioburiense and H. roseocremeum. Hyphoderma mopanshanense grouped with H. setigerum.

Steccherinum tenuissimum and S. xanthum spp. nov. (Polyporales, Basidiomycota): New species from China.

Two new wood-inhabiting fungal species, Steccherinum tenuissimum and S. xanthum spp. nov. are described based on a combination of morphological features and molecular evidence. Steccherinum tenuissimum is characterized by an annual growth habit, resupinate basidiomata with an odontioid hymenial surface, a dimitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, strongly encrusted cystidia and basidiospores measuring 3–5 × 2–3.5 μm. Steccherinum xanthum is characterized by odontioid basidiomata and a monomitic hyphal system with generative hyphae bearing clamp connections and covering by crystals, colourless, thin-walled, smooth, IKI–, CB–and has basidiospores measuring 2.7–5.5 × 1.8–4.0 μm. Sequences of the ITS and nLSU nrRNA gene regions of the studied samples were generated, and phylogenetic analyses were performed with maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference methods. The phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data of ITS + nLSU sequences showed that two new Steccherinum species felled into the residual polyporoid clade. Further investigation was obtained for more representative taxa in Steccherinum based on ITS + nLSU sequences, which demonstrated that S. tenuissimum and S. xanthum were sister to S. robustius with high support (100% BP, 100% BS and 1.00 BPP).

<p><strong><em>Trechispora daweishanensis</em> and <em>T. xantha spp. nov.</em> (Hydnodontaceae, Trechisporales) found in Yunnan Province of China</strong></p>

Two wood-inhabiting fungal species, Trechispora daweishanensis and T. xantha spp. nov. are proposed based on morphological features and molecular evidence. Trechispora daweishanensis is characterized by basidiomata with an annual growth habit, a tuberculate hymenophore, a monomitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae and ellipsoid, hyaline, thin-walled, smooth basidiospores measuring 3.8–5 × 2.7–3.5 µm. Trechispora xantha is characterized by resupinate, cracked basidiomata with a buff-coloured hymenial surface, a monomitic hyphal system and ellipsoid, hyaline, thin-walled, smooth basidiospores measuring 4.3–5.7 × 3.2–4 µm. Sequences of ITS and nLSU gene regions of the studied samples were generated. The phylogenetic analysis based on molecular data of ITS+nLSU sequences supported the novelty of these two species. Furthermore, we provide a key to the known species of Trechispora in China.

Two new species of Panellus (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) from China

Based on morphological characteristics and molecular evidence, two new species of Panellus, P. bambusicola and P. yunnanensis, are described and illustrated from Yunnan Province, southwestern China. Both species are characterized by white and gelatinous basidiocarps, poroid hymenophore which is concolorous with the pileal surface, a monomitic hyphal system with slightly thick-walled tramal hyphae. P. bambusicola has oblong ellipsoid to ellipsoid basidiospores measuring 6–7.2 × 3–3.8 μm, whereas P. yunnanensis has ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores measuring 6.5–8.5 × 3.8–4.5 μm. In addition, samples of P. bambusicola and P. yunnanensis formed two distinct phylogenetic lineages based on the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) and nuclear large subunit ribosomal RNA gene regions (nLSU) sequences.

Hyphodermella aurantiaca sp. nova (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) as Evidenced by Morphological Characters and Phylogenetic Analyses

Hyphodermella aurantiaca C.L. Zhao sp. nova (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) is described based on morphological and molecular evidence. The species has an annual growth habit, resupinate basidiomata with saffron to orange hymenial surface, a monomitic hyphal system with generative hyphae bearing simple septa, IKI–, CB–, and ellipsoid, hyaline, thin-walled, smooth, IKI–, CB– basidiospores. In phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data of ITS + nLSU and nLSU sequences H. aurantiaca formed a monophyletic lineage with a strong support (100% BS, 100% BP, 1.00 BPP) and grouped with H. corrugata, H. poroides and H. rosae.

<p><strong>A new species of <em>Fulvifomes </em>(Basidiomycota)<em> </em>from China</strong></p>

Fulvifomes submerrillii (Hymenochaetaceae, Basidiomycota) is described from China based on both of morphological evidence and molecular data. The new species is characterized by perennial, pileate basidiocarps, encrusted, smooth pileal surface, 6–7 pores per mm with thick dissepiments, a dimitic hyphal system with interwoven skeletal hyphae, absence of setae or setal hyphae, ventricose cystidioles, and broadly ellipsoid, yellowish brown, thick-walled, smooth basidiospores, 4.7–5 × 3.7–4 μm. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from ITS and nLSU sequences indicates that the new species forms a separate well-supported clade, closely related to F. merrillii. However, F. merrillii has larger pores (4–5 per mm), a subdimitic hyphal structure in context, the contextual skeletal hyphae which regularly arranged and become swollen in KOH, and slightly longer (4.5–6 μm long) basidiospores. Moreover, one new combination (F. rigidus) is revived from synonym under Inonotus rigidus.

<p><strong>Morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses reveal <em>Antrodia yunnanensis</em> <em>sp. nov.</em> (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) from China</strong></p>

A new polypore, Antrodia yunnanensis, collected from southwestern China, is described and illustrated based on morphological characteristics and molecular evidence. It is characterized by annual, resupinate basidiocarps with greyish blue to dark greyish blue pore surface upon drying, round to angular pores measuring 2–3 per mm, a dimitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, subicular hyphae bearing fine crystals, and cylindrical, thin-walled, smooth basidiospores measuring 7–9.9 × 2.5–3.1 µm. Molecular phylogeny inferred from ITS and nLSU sequence data showed that samples of A. yunnanensis formed a distinctive lineage in Antrodia sensu lato, and it nested a sister group with A. tropica.
