Redefining student assessment in Nigerian tertiary institutions: The impact of AI technologies on academic performance and developing countermeasures

Integrating artificial AI technologies in education has revolutionised teaching, learning, and assessment worldwide. In Nigerian tertiary institutions, students increasingly rely on AI tools for assignments, research, and exam preparation, raising concerns about the integrity of traditional assessment methods. This paper explores the impact of AI technologies on academic performance and the challenges they pose to accurately evaluating student capabilities. It argues for the urgent need to redefine assessment strategies in Nigerian higher education to preserve academic standards while harnessing the benefits of AI. The study highlights ethical concerns such as data privacy, access inequality, and over-reliance on AI tools, which can undermine critical thinking skills. It provides countermeasures and policy recommendations, including establishing AI usage guidelines, promoting equitable access to technology, and integrating assessments that prioritise critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By adopting these innovative policies, Nigerian tertiary institutions can enhance the quality of education and ensure that students develop genuine skills and academic excellence. This paper calls for immediate action to align education with the realities of the AI age, ensuring sustainable and authentic student outcomes.

Impression Management and Employee Commitment in Akwa-Ibom Tertiary Institutions

General background: Employee commitment is crucial for organizational success, and impression management techniques may significantly influence this commitment. Specific background: Previous studies have examined the effects of impression management in organizational contexts, yet the specific dynamics in Nigerian tertiary institutions remain underexplored. Knowledge gap: The influence of exemplification, ingratiation, and self-promotion on different dimensions of employee commitment (affective, continuance, and normative) in Nigerian institutions has not been fully examined. Aims: This study aims to determine how these dimensions of impression management influence employee commitment and the moderating role of organizational culture. Results: Findings reveal a positive and significant relationship between impression management and employee commitment. Specifically, exemplification enhances affective commitment, ingratiation promotes continuance commitment, and self-promotion influences normative commitment. Organizational culture was found to strongly moderate these relationships. Novelty: This study provides new insights into the contextual effects of impression management on employee commitment in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Implications: The findings suggest that management should employ strategic impression management techniques to enhance employee commitment, fostering improved organizational performance and reduced turnover. Roles of Infrastructure and ICT Facilities in Enhancing Curriculum Implementation in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

This paper explored the role of infrastructure facilities in enhancing curriculum implementation in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The paper used secondary data, sourced from print and online publications. The study highlights that infrastructure facilities, including physical and technological resources, is crucial for the effective delivery of curricula. Key findings indicate that well-developed infrastructure significantly enhances teaching, learning, and administrative processes, thereby promoting successful curriculum implementation. The paper emphasizes the growing importance of modern facilities such as ICT resources, which are integral to advancing education in the 21st century. In light of these findings, it is recommended that the government prioritize the provision of adequate and modern infrastructure across all tertiary institutions. Additionally, tertiary institution management should adopt public-private partnerships to foster infrastructure development, and private organizations should contribute to the enhancement of facilities in Nigerian higher education. Further studies should conduct empirical research on the impact of infrastructure facilities and ICT resources on curriculum implementation in tertiary institutions.

Impacts of Industrial Disharmony on Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

The issue of disharmony in Nigerian tertiary institutions has become a significant challenge, affecting academic quality, institutional stability, and national development. This paper examines the various cases and underlying causes of disharmony within Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Through a critical review of the literature and empirical data, the paper highlights the adverse impacts of disharmony, such as reduced academic productivity, a decline in the quality of graduates, infrastructural decay, and loss of public trust in higher education. The study argues that addressing disharmony requires collaborative efforts between government, management of institutions, staff unions, and students. By promoting inclusivity, strengthening institutional autonomy, and ensuring effective conflict management mechanisms, Nigerian tertiary institutions can foster a more harmonious and productive academic environment.

Undergraduate students’ perspectives on the effectiveness of e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of the educational system to environmental disruptions. This study investigated undergraduate students' perceptions of the effectiveness of e-learning during the pandemic in Nigeria. A sample of 400 randomly selected students participated in the study, using a 32-item structured questionnaire for data collection. Data were analysed using means, standard deviations, and independent samples t-tests. The findings indicated that participants generally had a positive perception of e-learning as a mode of instruction during the COVID-19 lockdown in Nigeria, irrespective of gender. Participants acknowledged both the benefits and challenges of online learning platforms. The results suggest that e-learning has potential among the study participants, and efforts should be made to enhance its development as a complement to traditional face-to-face instruction, improving the learning environment in Nigerian tertiary institutions during emergencies and regular academic sessions.

A Rule-Based System for Admission Recommendations in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

This research presents a rule-based system to provide admission recommendations in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Unlike many existing studies that employ machine learning classifiers, this research aims to develop a transparent and deterministic system using predefined rules. The rule-based system recommends suitable courses based on candidates’ O’level results, Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scores, computed post-UTME scores, and specific eligibility criteria. By focusing on a rule-based approach, the system mitigates the limitations and potential misclassifications associated with machine learning, thereby enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of the admissions process. The methodology follows predefined guidelines to ensure a transparent and understandable admissions procedure. This approach avoids the complexities and uncertainties of predictive models, providing an accurate and reliable method for course recommendations. The rule-based recommendation system ultimately aims to support educational institutions and admission offices in making informed decisions regarding candidate qualifications, eligibility, and course recommendations.

Enrolment of students in Nigerian tertiary institutions: A reflective impact of the slogan ‘who school help'

There has been a noticeable decline in enrolment in some Nigerian tertiary institutions, such as colleges of education, polytechnics, and some state-owned universities. Various factors have been identified as influencing this problem. This study aims to investigate the impact of the popular slogan "Who School Help" on post-secondary school enrolment in Nigeria. The study used a descriptive survey research design, collecting both qualitative and quantitative data. A purposive sampling method was used to select participants from Senior Secondary Class 1 to Senior Secondary Class 3. In this category, 565 students were selected. Additionally, 20 participants were accidentally selected based on inclusion criteria, with 10 of them being secondary school graduates and the other 10 being graduates from tertiary institutions. The study found that all participants claimed to be familiar with and resonate with the slogan 'Who School Help?' Furthermore, the study revealed that factors such as graduate unemployment rate, salary disparities, and political dynamics motivate the promotion of the slogan as a means to explain the decline in post-secondary school enrolment. In conclusion, the study determined that the popular use of the slogan "Who School Help" among Nigerian youths significantly influences individuals' decisions regarding post-secondary education. The limitations and recommendations of the study were also discussed.

Text Messaging as a Precursor of Linguistic Decadence for Students in Some Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

Electronic text messaging in Nigeria is an entrenched linguistic behavior which has caught the attention of an enormous youth population and it is adversely affecting the acquisition of linguistic competence. This paper investigated the use of text messages by students in some tertiary institutions in Lagos State, Nigeria in order to examine the various deviant linguistic features and degree of departure from standard variety of English usage. The study utilized extracts from two hundred text messages collected for analysis from male and female undergraduate students between July 2021 and June 2022. Our findings reveal that texting negatively impacts writing skill of students and the noticeable linguistic anomalies are: non-standard spellings, word order violations, disjunctive orthography, anomalous punctuations, vowel deletion, use of slang and colloquialisms, surface diagraphia and others. The paper concludes that since anything goes in texting and it is not regulated, it may wreck the language because it has a pernicious effect on the linguistic competence of students and on the general standard of education. It then recommends that educators should rise to the challenge and instill in students the formal writing skill they need to succeed.

Implications of Financial Distress on Tertiary Education in Nigeria

The study examined the implications of financial distress on tertiary Education Nigeria. The financial distress in tertiary institutions in Nigeria today can be attributed to poor management and leadership problems. This has tremendously affected the operations of higher institutions in Nigeria. The university system requires a lot of funds for effective administration to be able to achieve its goals. The inability of the government to stick to the UNESCO 26% of national budget for education has seriously affected the management of Nigerian universities. Most of Nigerian tertiary institutions today face a lot of problems due to financial distress. As many of them find it difficult to pay workers’ salaries, provide adequate infrastructure and teaching equipment. The causes and implications of financial distress on tertiary Education were examined. It was recommended that both federal and state governments need to collaborate more with the private sector to explore opportunities for raising non-traditional funds and participation in education financing. Also, government should stop the habit of diverting the funds meant for tertiary education projects to other sectors. In addition, funds disbursed for projects and programmes should be adequately supervised, monitored and evaluated to achieve effective implementation.

Effect of Information and Communication Technology on Curriculum Delivery in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

The impact of information and communication technology (ICT) on the delivery of curricula in Nigerian tertiary institutions is thoroughly examined in this article. Technology’s fast evolution has made it more common for educational settings to use ICT technologies, which presents both many opportunities and difficulties for developing and delivering curricula. This study used a systematic Literature review as part of its research approach, which also included pertinent reports, academic publications, research papers, and a structured questionnaire. According to the findings, ICT has had a substantial impact on how the curriculum is delivered at tertiary institutions in Nigeria, leading to noticeable changes in teaching strategies, student learning environments, and educational outcomes as a whole, but has certain challenges like poor infrastructural development, low level of literacy among others, however, the study recommended that Tertiary institutions in Nigeria should embrace ICT in curriculum delivery, the government should fund ICT education facilities in Nigerian Tertiary institutions.

Modelling of Time Spent on social media and Time Spent to Study on the Academic Performance of Students in Selected Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

This paper determines the mathematical model of the time spent on social media to study and the time spent to study outside of class on the academic performance of students in the selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria. To achieve this purpose, two research questions and two research hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. The researchers adopted descriptive survey research design and a sample size of 300 were selected from the total population of the students considered using stratified random sampling technique. The regression analysis statistical method was employed to determine the mathematical model that connects the dependence variable (academic performance) and the independent variables (time spent on social media to study and time spent to study outside of class). The study reveals that, there is a positive relationship between time spent studying outside of class and academic performance of students and there is also a strong positive relationship between time spent on social media to study and academic performance of students. In addition, the mathematical model that connects all the variables were determined and formulated based on the data collected from the research findings. The study was concluded with some recommendations that, awareness programmes should be put in place to sensitize students of the advantages derived from the use of the social media to study effectively.

The impact of employee education on Corporate Growth and Career Development in the Nigerian tertiary institutions

The study investigated the impact of employee education on corporate growth and career development in tertiary institutions in South West, Nigeria. The study adopted a quantitative research method. A purposive sampling technique was used to select three universities out of all such institutions in the six states in the region. A proportional sampling technique was used to select 291 staff. Three instruments were used to elicit information from respondents tagged employee education questionnaire (EEQ), corporate growth questionnaire (CGQ), and career development questionnaire (CDQ). The instruments were subjected to a reliability test using SPSS version 21 where the reliability coefficient indicated at .901, .890, .811. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to analyze the hypotheses formulated at a .05 level of significance. The findings revealed that employee education has a significant impact on corporate growth where r = 745, p < .05. It further showed that employee education has a significant impact on career development where r = 807, p < .05. It concluded that employee education is the predictor of corporate growth and career development in tertiary institution in South West, Nigeria. In line with the findings of the study, it was recommended that the management of tertiary institutions should give prominence to employee education to boost staff morale and facilitate corporate growth and career development.

Burden and outcome of respiratory morbidities among children and adolescents with sickle cell disease-A retrospective review of emergency presentations in some Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Despite the huge burden of sickle cell disease (SCD) among Nigerian children, the burden and outcome of respiratory illnesses remain undocumented. Thus, we aimed to describe the spectrum and outcome of respiratory illnesses among SCD childrenand adolescentadmissions in ten Nigerian tertiary hospitals. A retrospective review of the SCD admission records of children and adolescents with a confirmed diagnosis of respiratory illnesses from 2012 to 2021 in ten tertiary health facilities across five geopolitical zones in Nigeria was conducted. The data, collectedbetween March and June 2023, included the age, sex, diagnosis, complications, duration and outcome of hospitalization. Of the 72,333 paediatric admissions, 7,256 (10.0%) had SCD; the proportion of SCD from the total admission ranged from 2.1 to 16.3% in the facilities. Of the 7,256 children and adolescents with SCD, 1,213 (16.7%) had respiratory morbidities. Lower respiratory disease was the most common (70.0%) respiratory entity and the majority were pneumonia (40.1.0%), followed by acute chest syndrome (26.7%). Seventeen (1.4%) patients died; all had lower respiratory diseases [(acute chest syndrome ACS (11, 64.7%), pneumonia; 5, 29.4%, and asthma (1, 5.9%). Based on the proportion of deaths among overall SCD, the 17 death cases contributed 9.4% (95% CI 5.9 to 14.5). Factors associated with deaths included duration of hospitalization less than 72 hours and lower respiratory tract diseases. Sickle cell disease is a major contributor to hospitalization among Nigerian children and adolescents, with high respiratory morbidity and mortality. Pneumonia and acute chest syndrome were associated with mortality, andthe highest risk of death within the first 72 hours.

AN ASSESSMENT OF GENDER RELATED FACTORS AND ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTIONS OF STUDENTS IN SELECTED PUBLIC TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine gender related factors and entrepreneurial intentions of students in selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It was as well focused on the barriers to male and female entrepreneurial activities in the selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria, to determine how effective entrepreneurship education is shaping the entrepreneurial intentions of female and male students in the selected tertiary institutions, examine how entrepreneurial intention of male and female students differ in the selected tertiary institutions; and to assess the gender stereotype for male and female students in the selected tertiary institutions. Theoretical Framework: The common stereotypical view of females being submissive to their male counterparts is said to be clashing with the inherent nature of entrepreneurship intention, and the propensity towards launching an entrepreneurial business may be seen as an impairing factor for female students. In this sense, the paper has sought to systematically review various publications on gender related factors and entrepreneurial intentions of students of public tertiary institutions. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study adopted a cross-sectional survey method using a structured questionnaire. The study area comprised of selected public tertiary institutions in Southwest Nigeria. Six tertiary institutions were selected for the purpose of this study. Students that have participated in entrepreneurship education in the selected tertiary institution in Nigeria are the target population for the study. Data from 351 respondents were assessed based on gender related factors and entrepreneurial intentions of students in selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings: The study found female students facing more barriers in balancing academic and entrepreneurial activities compared to male students. The study recommends that proper orientation should be given to students on the importance of entrepreneurship education and how it can help them to become self-employed after school and students should be properly oriented on barriers and gender stereotypes, and how it influence their entrepreneurial intentions. Originality/Value: The study therefore concludes that the distribution of barriers is not the same across the two categories of gender. Meanwhile, balancing academic and entrepreneurial activities, bad state of the economy and lack of capital as well as access to funds were the most popular barriers to entrepreneurial activities among tertiary institution students in Nigeria. Entrepreneurship education has statistically significant influence on entrepreneurial intention of students in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Three gender based stereotypes: active and energetic, sensitive to the needs of others and prone to position were statistically significantly different between female and male students which are not sufficient for generalization in this study. Nevertheless, the level of entrepreneurial intention is the same across the two categories of gender.

Utilization of technology-enhance learning tools among vocational and technical education teachers in Nigerian tertiary institutions

The study determined training needs of teachers and issues in the utilization of Technology-enhanced Learning tools in Vocational and Technical Education in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Five research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. The sample for the study is 318 teachers from six tertiary institutions that offer majority of Vocational and Technical Education programmes in Nigeria. Instrument for data collection was developed by the researchers and was validated by five experts in Vocational and Technical Education. The overall reliability index of the instrument is 0.81. Results from collected data revealed that the teachers require training to enable them use Technology-enhanced Learning tools for instructional delivery; the current mode of instructional delivery in institutions is face-to-face approach; many institutions have Information and Communication Technology center and institution wide internet which are not effectively utilized for instructional delivery, among numerous other findings. Among the recommendations is that teachers should be given access to the available Technology-enhanced Learning facilities in their institutions to enable them learn how to use them at their own free times. It was concluded that most VTE teachers are eager to deploy Technology-enhanced Learning tools for instructional delivery but some institutional supports they need, especially trainings are inadequate.

Revitalizing Higher Education: An in-Depth Analysis of Tetfund Intervention Policy and its Impact on Staff Development in Kogi State

This study examines the impact of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) intervention on staff development in three tertiary institutions in Kogi State: Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) Anyigba, Kogi State Polytechnic, and Federal College of Education Okene. Focused on the challenges of inadequate education financing in Africa, particularly Nigeria, the study aims to (1) review the TETFund Intervention Policy and (2) assess its effects on staff development in Nigerian universities. Utilizing a survey research design, data were collected from 1,098 respondents through structured questionnaires and interviews. The analysis, employing descriptive and inferential statistics, highlights the positive impact of TETFund intervention on infrastructure, staff training, and institutional development. The findings underscore the need for sustained funding with rigorous monitoring for Nigerian tertiary institutions.
