The emerald green tetra: a new restricted-range Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes: Characidae) from the upper rio Juruena, Chapada dos Parecis, Brazil

ABSTRACT A new species of Hyphessobrycon is described from the rio Mutum, a tributary of the rio Juruena, rio Tapajós basin, Brazil. The new taxon can be distinguished from its congeners by the presence of a well-defined and relatively narrow dark midlateral stripe on body, extending from head to the middle caudal-fin rays, presence of a humeral blotch, distal profile of the anal fin falcate in males, 13-16 branched anal-fin rays (vs. 17-26), and 11 or 12 horizontal scale rows around caudal peduncle. The new species shows polymorphism regarding the presence of the adipose fin, and a discussion on this type of polymorphism across the family and its systematic implications is presented.

A new Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes: Characidae) of the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group from the lower Amazon basin, Brazil

ABSTRACT A new species of Hyphessobrycon belonging to the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group from the lower rio Tapajós, state of Pará, Brazil, is described. The new species is allocated into the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group due to its color pattern, composed by an anteriorly well-defined, horizontally elongated humeral blotch that becomes diffuse and blurred posteriorly, where it overlaps with a conspicuous midlateral dark stripe that becomes blurred towards the caudal peduncle and the presence, in living specimens, of a tricolored longitudinal pattern composed by a dorsal red or reddish longitudinal stripe, a middle iridescent, golden or silvery longitudinal stripe, and a more ventrally-lying longitudinal dark pattern composed by the humeral blotch and dark midlateral stripe. It can be distinguished from all other species of the group by possessing humeral blotch with a straight or slightly rounded ventral profile, lacking a ventral expansion present in all other species of the group. The new species is also distinguished from Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus by a 9.6% genetic distance in the cytochrome c oxidase I gene. The little morphological distinction of the new species when compared with its most similar congener, H. heterorhabdus, indicates that the new species is one of the first truly cryptic fish species described from the Amazon basin.

A New Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes: Characidae) from the Guiana Shield in Northern Brazil

A new species of Hyphessobrycon from a tributary of the Rio Paru do Oeste (Rio Trombetas basin), at the lower Amazon basin draining the Guiana Shield region in Para State, Brazil, is described. The new species presents a unique combination of an irregularly-shaped humeral blotch, a broad diffuse midlateral stripe, and a roughly triangular caudal peduncle blotch. The new species is herein included in the Hyphessobrycon agulha species-group, and comparisons with species belonging to this group and to a similar-looking non-congener, Hemigrammus bellottii, are presented.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon is described from a marshland area in the headwaters of Rio Jequitinhonha basin, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The new species differs from congeners by presenting a single well-delimited conspicuous humeral blotch, rounded to vertically oval, restricted to the area dorsal to the lateral-line row of scales, without a narrower downward extension, greatest body depth anterior to dorsal-fin origin, bony processes in anal and pectoral-fin rays of males and four teeth in the inner row of the premaxillary bone. The new species presents a set of morphological features shared by some species currently assigned to Hasemania, Myxiops and to the Astyanax scabripinnis complex. Some of these features are discussed.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon Durbin from northeastern Brazil: evidence from morphological data and DNA barcoding (Characiformes, Characidae).

A new species of Hyphessobrycon is described for the upper Munim and Preguiças river basins, northeastern Brazil, supported by morphological and molecular species delimitation methods. This new species belongs to the Hyphessobrycon sensu stricto group, as it has the three main diagnostic character states of this assemblage: presence of a dark brown or black blotch on the dorsal fin, absence of a black midlateral stripe on its flank and the position of Weberian apparatus upward horizontal through dorsal margin of operculum. Our phylogenetic analysis also supported the allocation of the new species in this group; however, it was not possible to recover the species sister-group. Pristella maxillaris and Moenkhausia hemigrammoides were recovered as the sister-clade of the Hyphessobrycon sensu stricto group.

A new Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes: Characidae) from the rio Xingu Basin, Brazil

ABSTRACT. A new species of Hyphessobrycon is described from the middle and lower rio Xingu Basin, Para state, Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners by the combination of a large caudal peduncle blotch (largest in mature males), absence of humeral blotch, and largest teeth on dentary, inner premaxillary and maxillary relatively compressed with 6–9 cusps. The new species is compared to three other congeners with similar color pattern: Hyphessobrycon diastatos Dagosta, Marinho & Camelier 2014, Hy. negodagua Lima & Gerhard 2001, and Hy. parvellus Ellis 1911, and one species of Hemigrammus, He. rodwayi Durbin 1909.

Two new Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes: Characidae) species from Central Amazon basin, Brazil

Two new species of Hyphessobrycon, H. ericae and H. wosiackii, are described from the Amazon basin, Brazil. Both new species are distinguished from congeners by the coloration, composed by one humeral blotch merging with an anterior dark band restricted to the anterior portion of the body and the presence of a caudal peduncle blotch. Hyphessobrycon ericae is distinguished from H. wosiackii by presenting a humeral spot vertically elongated, with an overall appearance of an arrow, instead of an anteriorly rounded humeral spot.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon from the upper Rio Tapajós basin, in the Tapajós-Juruena ecoregion, is described. Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus n. sp. is distinguished from its congeners by having a black, oblique stripe extending from the origin of the second branched ray to the distal end of the third branched anal-fin ray, lacking a conspicuous black midlateral stripe on the body, inner premaxillary teeth with up to seven cusps, and fins normally hyaline or with scattered chromatophores. The description of a new species that is restricted to the Tapajós-Juruena ecoregion is consistent with this region being an area of high endemism of freshwater fishes.

Hyphessobrycon procyon can be distinguished from its congeners by the unique combination of the following features: elongation of the dorsal fin in mature males, absence of dark blotches on the dorsal fin, and presence of two humeral blotches. The possibility of a relationship of the new species within H. elachys, H. heliacus, H. loweae, H. moniliger, and H. peugeoti is discussed based on the sharing of characteristics related to the sexual dimorphism and tooth morphology.

The new taxon can be distinguished from its congeners by having a well-defined and relatively narrow dark midlateral stripe on body extending from the upper half of the posterior margin of the eye to the middle caudal-fin rays, absence of a humeral blotch, 16–19 branched anal-fin rays, 2–4 maxillary teeth, six branched pelvic-fin rays, and the absence of dark pigmentation crossing the eye. Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia, a species described from few specimens from the aquarium trade without precise locality, is redescribed herein based on extensive material, and its known distribution is discussed and rectified from the original description.

Two new species of Hyphessobrycon are described from the headwaters of the Tapajós and Xingu River basins, Pará, Brazil. Both new species can be distinguished from congeners by the presence of a vertically elongate humeral blotch, a conspicuous round to vertically oblong caudal-peduncle blotch not extending onto the distal portions of the middle caudal-fin rays, a conspicuous blotch on the central portion of the third infraorbital immediately ventral to the eye, the lack of a conspicuous longitudinal stripe and the lack of sexual dimorphism in the extension of the caudal-peduncle blotch. Hyphessobrycon delimai n. sp. can be distinguished from Hyphessobrycon krenakore n. sp. by the extent of the caudal-peduncle blotch which extends across most of the caudal-peduncle depth (v. restricted to the middle portion of the caudal peduncle), the presence of dark chromatophores uniformly scattered along the length of the interradial membranes of the dorsal, anal and caudal fins (v. concentrated on the distal one-half or one-fourth of the interradial membranes) and the absence of small bony processes on the pelvic and anal fins of mature males (v. small bony processes present).

A new species of Hyphessobrycon, H. peugeoti, is described from the middle portions of the rio Juruena drainage, upper rio Tapajós basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. It can be distinguished from all congeners, with the exception of H. loweae and H. heliacus, by a filamentous elongation of the dorsal fin and the approximately straight margin of the anal fin in adult males. It can be distinguished from both H. loweae and H. heliacus by an overall red coloration in life (vs. a golden coloration in life in the latter). Additionally, it can be distinguished from H. heliacus by the lack of chevron-like dark markings along the midline (vs. presence of chevron-like dark-markings in H. heliacus), and from H. loweae by the presence of only five horizontal scale rows between the dorsal-fin origin and the lateral line (vs. 6-7 in H. loweae), and the higher number of branched anal-fin rays (21-24, modally 22, vs. 17-21, modally 20, in H. loweae). Additional meristic, morphometric, and distributional data are provided for Hyphessobrycon loweae, including its first record in the rio Araguaia/Tocantins basin. Comments on a putative monophyletic group including H. peugeoti, H. loweae, H. heliacus, H. elachys, and H. moniliger are presented.

We describe a new species, Hyphessobrycon sebastiani, from the San Juan River drainage of the Pacific versant of Colombia. This new species of Hyphessobrycon is distinguished from all congeners that share two humeral spots and no caudal blotch by having: five unbranched and 25 to 28 branched anal–fin rays; 12–13 branched pectoral–fin rays; 35–37 scales in the longitudinal series; eight scales between the lateral line and the dorsal–fin origin; 12–13 predorsal scales; 13–18 pored lateral–line scales and three pairs of large bony hooks on anal fin of mature males.

The new species is diagnosed from congeners by the presence of two large hooks on each side of the anal fin in adult males (processes of last unbranched and first branched anal-fin rays), distal third of caudal-fin black except for its distal tips (which are hyaline), anal-fin rays v,19–21, and dorsal-fin rays ii,8. Comments on its generic status and putative relationships are provided.

Hyphessobrycon melanostichos is distinguished from its congeners by the combination of a conspicuous longitudinal broad black band beginning on the posterior margin of orbit and reaching the tip of middle caudal fin rays, a distinct vertically elongate humeral spot, and 16 to 18 branched anal-fin rays. Hyphessobrycon notidanos is distinguished from its congeners by the combination of an elongate dorsal fin in mature males, a vertically elongate humeral spot, 2-4 maxillary teeth, iii,8 dorsal-fin rays, and 16 to 21 branched anal-fin rays.

A new species of Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes, Characidae) from the rio Uruguay basin, Argentina. Hyphessobrycon isiri sp. n., is described from the no Uruguay basin. Hyphessobrycon isiri sp. n. differs from the remaining species of the genus by the presence of teeth of the inner series of the premaxilla with 5 to 11 cusps, one maxillary tooth with 7 cusps; 16 to 22 branched anal-fin rays; one humeral spot vertically elongated, and a rnidlateral stripe ending in a conspicuous caudal spot.

Three new species of Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes: Characidae) from the upper rio Araguaia basin in Brazil

Three new species of Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes: Characidae) are described from the upper rio Araguaia basin. Hyphessobrycon langeanii n. sp. is distinguished from all congeners by the presence of a well-defined, round humeral spot, a reticulate color pattern, a broad, horizontally-elongate caudal-peduncle blotch, and a relatively wide, faint midlateral dark stripe. Hyphessobrycon eilyos n. sp. is distinguished from all congeners by the absence of humeral and caudal spots; by the presence of numerous dark chromatophores on the lateral surface of the body, intensely concentrated on the ventral region from the pelvic-fin origin to the end of the caudal-fin base, dorsal, adipose, and caudal fins with carmine red pigmentation in life; and the presence of 7-11 maxillary teeth. Hyphessobrycon weitzmanorum n. sp. is distinguished from all congeners by the combination of the possession of two humeral spots and a general dark color pattern. These three new species, along with Creagrutus molinus (Characidae), Apareiodon tigrinus (Parodontidae), Aspidoras velites (Callichthyidae), an undescribed member of the Hypoptopomatinae (Loricariidae), Cnesterodon septentrionalis (Poeciliidae), and Simpsonichthys cholopteryx (Rivulidae), all of which are apparently endemic of the upper rio Araguaia, indicate that this area is a previously unrecognized area of endemism.
