Cletocamptus cubaensis n. sp. (Harpacticoida, Canthocamptidae) from Cuba with taxonomic notes on the species

Abstract A new species of harpacticoid copepod, Cletocamptus cubaensis n. sp., from a marine aquarium in Cuba, previously identified with the highly polymorphic Cletocamptus deitersi (Richard, 1897), is described herein. A revision of the Cuban material showed that, despite the morphological similarity to Cletocamptus deitersi, there are significant interspecific differences in several microcharacters that were not taken into account in the previous species determination, such as integumental sensilla and pores, and ornamentation of segments, mouthparts, swimming legs, prosome, and urosome. Additionally, some other differences were observed in the relative length and shape of the apophysis of the endopod of P3 in males, the armature complement of the second segment of endopod P2 in males (with four setae instead of three), the ornamentation and length of the caudal rami in both sexes, and the ornamentation of the anal operculum (with 8 spinules). Similarity to other species is discussed, along with brief comments on the morphological similarities and differences between the new species from Cuba and Cletocamptus nudus Gómez, 2005 recorded from Brazil and Colombia, C. schmidti Mielke, 2000 known from the Galapagos archipelago, and C. samariensis Fuentes-Reinés, Zoppi de Roa & Torres, 2015 from Colombia.

Elaphoidella longiramus sp. nov. (Copepoda: Harpacticoida, Canthocamptidae), a new species of cave-dwelling copepod from central Thailand.

A new species of harpacticoid copepod belonging to the genus Elaphoidella is described, based on materials collected from Thae Wa Phithak Cave, Lopburi Province, central Thailand. Specimens of Elaphoidella longiramus sp. nov. were found in a water bucket that was fully filled by dripping water from the cave ceiling. Of the 32 Elaphoidella species recorded from Southeast Asia, E. longiramus sp. nov. is the 14th member of this genus reported from Thailand. The new species is most similar to E. thailandensis by having four well-developed setae on the exopod of the female fifth leg. The endopod of the fourth leg is lacking, and the first leg has a two-segmented endopod in both sexes. However, it is distinguished from E. thailandensis by having elongated caudal rami, the exopod with a seta-like spinule on the inner margin of the female fifth leg, a different setal formula on the third exopod of the second to fourth legs, a different number of teeth on the anal operculum, and a different number of ventral spinules on the anal somite.

The Discovery and Preliminary Geological and Faunal Descriptions of Three New Steinahóll Vent Sites, Reykjanes Ridge, Iceland

During RVMS Merianexpedition MSM75, an international, multidisciplinary team explored the Reykjanes Ridge from June to August 2018. The first area of study, Steinahóll (150–350 m depth), was chosen based on previous seismic data indicating hydrothermal activity. The sampling strategy included ship- and AUV-mounted multibeam surveys, Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), Epibenthic Sledge (EBS), and van Veen grab (vV) deployments. Upon returning to Steinahóll during the final days of MSM75, hydrothermal vent sites were discovered using the ROV Phoca (Kiel, GEOMAR). Here we describe and name three new, distinct hydrothermal vent site vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs); Hafgufa, Stökkull, Lyngbakr. The hydrothermal vent sites consisted of multiple anhydrite chimneys with large quantities of bacterial mats visible. The largest of the three sites (Hafgufa) was mapped, and reconstructed in 3D. In total 23,310 individual biological specimens were sampled comprising 41 higher taxa. Unique fauna located in the hydrothermally venting areas included two putative new species of harpacticoid copepod (Tisbesp. nov. andAmphiascussp. nov.), as well as the spongeLycopodina cupressiformis(Carter, 1874). Capitellidae Grube, 1862 and Dorvilleidae Chamberlin, 1919 families dominated hydrothermally influenced samples for polychaetes. Around the hydrothermally influenced sites we observed a notable lack of megafauna, with only a few species being present. While we observed hydrothermal associations, the overall species composition is very similar to that seen at other shallow water vent sites in the north of Iceland, such as the Mohns Ridge vent fields, particularly with peracarid crustaceans. We therefore conclude the community overall reflects the usual “background” fauna of Iceland rather than consisting of “vent endemic” communities as is observed in deeper vent systems, with a few opportunistic species capable of utilizing this specialist environment.

A new species of Maraenobiotus (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from Lena River Delta (North-Eastern Siberia).

A new species of harpacticoid copepod of the family Canthocamptidae, Maraenobiotus supermario sp. nov. is described. The new species was found in interstitial waters of the moss tundra of the Lena River Delta, Siberia. This species belongs to the vejdovskyi-species group. The new species differs from its congeners in the apical caudal setae lacking a bulbous proximal part, and in the unique structure of the mandibular palp with only one seta. We also present detailed figures and description of sensilla and pores on the somites surface, which could be used in the future to diagnose and solve taxonomic issues of this complex genus.

Forficatocaris odeteae n. sp., a new Parastenocarididae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from a high-altitude pond in Minas Gerais state, Brazil

Abstract A new species of harpacticoid copepod, genus Forficatocaris (F. odeteae n. sp.) is described from a high-altitude pond at the Itacolomi National Park near Ouro Preto city, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The main characters distinguishing the new species from F. affinis Dussart, 1983 and F. lilianae Noodt, 1972 are: (i) distal portion of exopod 1 of male leg 4 with stout spinules; (ii) male leg 5 lateral spine stout and with blunt apex; (iii) endopod of leg 4 curved outwards, but “c” shaped (not forming a straight angle); (iv) female with dorsal spinule row on anal somite larger than in congeners, ventral ornaments smaller and less numerous; and (v) the shape of the modified spine located at the leg 1 endopod 1 of the male; and (vi) the spine of leg 5 in males and females.

A new species of the genusHalectinosoma(Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Ectinosomatidae) from Korea

Abstract A new species of harpacticoid copepod, Halectinosoma foveolata, was described from sandy sediments on several intertidal areas of Korea. This new species is mostly similar to H. dimorphum Coull, 1970, but differs from the latter by the following characteristics combined: (1) the third segment of antennule is longest; (2) the first exopodal segment of antenna has a row of spinules; (3) the mandibular gnathobase is composed of chitinous teeth without dorsal seta; (4) the female P5 has an incomplete boundary between the exopod and the baseoendopod; (5) the female P5 baseoendopod has two rows of spinules. We also discuss the state of H. arenicola sensu Ito (1973), reported from the Japanese coast, which is considered here a synonym with the new species.

Description of Elaphoidella paramuna n. sp. (Canthocamptidae), a new harpacticoid copepod from Colombia

A new species of harpacticoid copepod was discovered on submerged mosses of a high Andean lake in Colombia. The diagnostic characters of the male and female canthocamptidElaphoidella paramunan. sp. are based on the chaetotaxy of legs 1 to 4, morphology of leg 5, armature of anal urosomite, size and armature of anal operculum and morphology, armature and ornamentation of caudal rami. It belongs to the group X of Lang (1948); its relationships withElaphoidella pectinata,E. armataandE. brevifurcataare discussed. The 35 species and subspecies ofElaphoidellaknown in the Neotropical region are assigned to groups I, II, VII, VIII and X of Lang’s system (1948). Identification keys to ColombianElaphoidellaspecies are provided.

Cletocamptus goenchimsp. nov., a new harpacticoid (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) from India

Abstract A new species of harpacticoid copepod, Cletocamptus goenchim sp. nov., was found in the mouth of the Mandovi estuary, Goa, India. This species seems to be the same reported in 1979 from Lake Kolleru (east coast of India) as C. deitersi, but until new specimens are studied, the 1979 record will remain as doubtful. The new species seems to be related to C. stimpsoni. They can be separated by the armature of the mandibular palp, the shape of the outer element of basis of P2, the ornamentation of the posterior margin of cephalothorax, pro-, and urosomites, and anal operculum of both male and female, the armature formula of male P5EXP, the armature formula of the male P2ENP2, and the relative length and shape of the inner apophysis of the male P3ENP2. Some comments on specimens of Cletocamptus from Korea and China are given.

Delavalia Qingdaoensis Sp. Nov. (Harpacticoida, Miraciidae), a New Copepod Species from Jiaozhou Bay, Yellow Sea

Abstract Delavalia qingdaoensis, a new species of harpacticoid copepod of the family Miraciidae is described based on specimens sorted from sediment samples collected in Jiaozhou Bay, Qingdao, Shandong Peninsula, Yellow Sea, in May 2008. The new species is easily distinguished from its congeners by the combined characters of the antennulary segments, an apomorphic setal formula of the swimming legs, and the shape of P5 in both sexes. It is remarkably similar to D. bocqueti (Soyer, 1971) and D. latioperculata (Itô, 1981), but it differs from D. bocqueti by features of the caudal rami, antennule, antennary endopod, mandibular exopod, maxillipedal basis, and P5 endopodal lobe; from D. latioperculata by the caudal rami, the inner setae of P1-P4 enp-1, P2 enp-2, and P4 exp-3, and the shape of P5 in both sexes.

A new species of Dactylopusioides (Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Thalestridae) infesting brown algae, and its life history

A new species of harpacticoid copepod, Dactylopusioides malleus sp. nov., belonging to the family Thalestridae is described from central Japan. The species is obligately endophagous in dictyotalean brown algae (Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V. Lamouroux, Dictyota maxima Zanardini and Dictyopteris undulata Holmes). The species nests by burrowing into the algal tissue during the copepod naupliar stages, while copepodids and adults reside in a dome-shaped, transparent capsule made of mucus and formed on the algal tissue. In laboratory experiments, the new species progressed through its complete life cycle (i.e. from egg to adult) while feeding only on unialgal dictyotalean tissues; this confirmed the obligate relationship with the host. The new species shares the following morphological characters with other species of Dactylopusioides: 1) antennary exopod 1-segmented; 2) first segment of P1 endopod in female elongated with a long seta on the inner proximal margin; 3) baseoendopod and exopod of P5 in female with five setae. It differs from other species in the following ways: 1) antennary exopod with six setae; 2) a stout hammer-shaped inner spine on the basis of P1 in male; 3) terminal short seta on third segment of P2 endopod in male is plumose.

A new species of Stenhelia (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from a hydrothermal, active, submarine volcano in the New Ireland Fore-Arc system (Papua New Guinea) with notes on deep sea colonization within the Stenheliinae

A new species of harpacticoid copepod, Stenhelia gundulae (Stenheliinae), is described from Edison seamount, a hydrothermal active submarine volcano in the New Ireland Fore-Arc system (Papua New Guinea). Some species groups are identified within the genus Stenhelia. The new species is assigned to the ‘S. normani group’, which is characterized within a more inclusive taxon by the male P5 exp being fused to the basis and lacking two outer spines. The species most closely related to S. gundulae s.n. appear to be S. giesbrechti T. and A. Scott, 1896, S. tethysensis Monard, 1928 and S. normani T. Scott, 1905 including its former subspecies S. polluta Monard, 1928 and S. acutirostris Willey, 1935. The other known deep sea species of Stenhelia, S. noodti Schriever, 1982, S. islandico Schriever, 1982, S. lima Becker and Schriever, 1979 and S. diegensis Thistle and Coull, 1979, on the other hand belong to a different lineage, the ‘S. longicaudata group’ which is characterized by the apomorphic shape of the P1. It is hypothesized that deep sea colonization within the Stenheliinae occurred independently at least twice in two different lineages.

A new species of Neocervinia (Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Cerviniidae) from the hyperbenthos of the Hatsushima cold-seep site in Sagami Bay, Japan

A new species of harpacticoid copepod, Neocervinia itoi (Cerviniidae), is described on the basis of females and copepodids collected from the Hatsushima cold-seep site in Sagami Bay, Japan. It is morphologically very close to its deep-sea congeners N. tenuicauda (Brotskaya, 1963) and N. unisetosa (Montagna, 1981). The new species differs primarily in the segmentation of the antennule and the endopod of both mandible and maxilliped, and in form and shape of the setae on leg 5. The presence of sensillar structures on the proximal part of the antennule is discussed. A key to the species of Neocervinia is presented.

Bryocamptus yohteiensis, a New Harpacticoid Copepod (Crustacea) from Hokkaido, Japan

A new species of harpacticoid copepod, Bryocamptus yohteiensis, is described. Specimens of this new species were collected from puddles on the streamside of a willow grove in Kutchan, located on the north of Mt. Yohtei in Hokkaido, Japan. The species is close to B. umiatensis Wilson, 1958 known from Alaska, Kamchatka, and Sakhalin Island. This is the seventh species of the genus reported from Japan.

Copepods From Shore-Springs of the Dead Sea (Israel) and Description of Schizopera Dimentmani N.Sp. (Harpacticoida)

A new species of harpacticoid copepod, Schizopera dimentmani sp. nov., is described from two spring areas on the western shores of the Dead Sea in Israel. The springs are slightly brackish. Metacyclops subdolus is also reported for the first time from the Levant. Some ecological and biogeographical comments are added.

Haloschizopera apprisea, a New Species of Harpacticoid Copepod from Alaska, and Some Observations on Sexual Dimorphism in the Family Diosaccidae

A new species of Haloschizopera, collected from 35-50 m depth in Auke Bay, Alaska, is described and figured. The presence of only two outer spines on the terminal exopod segment of swimming legs 2-4 make this species unique within the genus, but in other respects it appears to be most closely related to the H. exigua group of species. We show that the presence of sexually dimorphic structures on the terminal exopod segment of leg 3 is more widespread than was recognized previously within the family Diosaccidae. Specimens of the new species described in this paper were the most common representative of the family Diosaccidae in a collection of harpacticoid copepods obtained by one of us (J.W.F.) from muddy sediments in Auke Bay, Alaska (58?22'N, 138?41'W). Collections were taken during extensive ecological sampling in 1985-1986, primarily in Spring, at various depths from 30 to 50 m (Fleeger et al., 1989). Whole specimens were examined, drawn, and dissected in lactophenol; dissected parts were mounted in polyvinyl lactophenol and viewed under interference phase-contrast illumination. All figures were drawn using a drawing tube. Terminology used generally follows that of Lang (1948) except: (1) that only two major body divisions are recognized, the prosome (anterior to the major body articulation between somites bearing legs 4 and 5) and urosome (somites posterior to this articulation); and (2) that the terminology of Mielke (1984) is used for the mandible, Boxshall (1985) for the maxilliped, and Huys (1988) for the setae of the caudal ramus.

Scott, 1906, is described on the basis of specimens collected in the Crozet Islands (Terres Australes et Antarctiques Francaises). The discussion includes a key to the species of the genus Leptastacus.

A new species of Harpacticoid Copepod, belonging to the family Ancorabolidae Sars and to the genus Tapholaophontodes Soyer, is described on the basis of specimens collected in the Crozet Islands (Terres Australes et Antarctiques Francaises). The discussion includes a key to the Ancorabolidae.

Two new species of harpacticoid copepod from the South Orkney Islands, Antarctica, and a redescription of Idyellopsis typica Lang (Tisbidae)

Two new species of harpacticoid copepod belonging to the families Ameiridae and Ancorabolidae are fully described and illustrated. Pseudameria signyensis sp. nov. is very similar to P. crassicomis Sars but is distinguished from it by the presence of an extra seta on the inner border of the terminal segment of the endopodite of the fourth swimming leg. Laophontodes macropodia sp. nov. is distinguishable from all other species in the genus by the setal formula of the first four swimming legs but more particularly by the unique shape of the fifth leg. Idyellopsis typica Lang is by far the most abundant harpacticoid inhabiting sublittoral fine sand in Borg Bay, Signy Island, Antarctica. The female of this species is redescribed and the male described and illustrated for the first time.

A New Meiobenthic Species of Laophonte (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) from the Florida Keys

A new meiobenthic species of Laophonte (Copepoda: Harpacticoida), described from Big Pine Key, Florida, inhabits subtidal coralline sediments near and within beds of the seagrass Thalassia testudinum. Laophonte confusa n. sp. differs from other members of the genus in its novel combination of swimming leg segmentation and setation. Based on leg setation and P5 morphology, L. confusa must be allied with the setosa species complex. L. confusa differs from other setosa species by possessing two, rather than one, setae on the 8 Ps basoendopodite. Furthermore, L. confusa is one of only a few species in Laophonte which has a seta on the inner surface of the first segment of the 9 P4 endopodite. During meiobenthic sampling of subtropical seagrass sediments in the Florida Keys (Decho, 1984; Decho et al., 1985), we encountered a new species of harpacticoid copepod. Laophonte confusa n. sp. inhabits coralline sediments within beds of Thalassia testudinum Konig and barren sand patches adjacent to such beds. The new species (designated Laophonte sp. A in Decho et al., 1985) co-occurs with 25 other copepod and eight gastrotrich species, as well as with species in 16 other taxa (Decho et al., 1985). With the recent upswing of meiobenthic ecological studies in subtropical seagrass areas (Bell et al., 1984; Thistle et al., 1984; Bell, personal communication), there has been (with the exception of Bell & Kern, 1983) a concurrent lack of taxonomic investigations, even though many undescribed species inhabit these areas. Here, we describe a new harpacticoid species and compare it with other morphologically similar species of their respective genera. MATERIALS AND METHODS Copepods were collected according to the methods of Decho et al. (1985). The nomenclature and descriptive terminology are adapted after Lang (1948, 1965). Specimen examination procedure followed that of Coull (1977). Figures were prepared with the aid of a camera lucida. The abbreviations used throughout the paper are: A,, antennule; A2, antennae; Benp, basoendopodite; Enp, endopodite; Exp, exopodite; Md, mandible; Mx, maxilla; Mxl, maxillula; Mxp, maxilliped; P,-P6, pereiopods 1-6. A Revised Key to Leptocaris (Copepoda: Harpacticoida), Including a New Species From a Shallow Estuarine Lake in Louisiana, USA

During ecological research of benthic and fouling assemblages in a shallow estuarine lake in central Louisiana receiving thermal effluent, a new species of harpacticoid copepod was discovered. Approximately 700 specimens of Leptocaris kunzi n. sp. were collected on artificial substrate plates from August, 1977 - January, 1978. This new species is herein described and illustrated. Leptocaris kunzi n. sp. differs from other members of the nominal genus in the setation of the P2 - P4 endopods and by having a female P5 not fused into a single plate. The most closely related species to L. kunzi n. sp. appear to be L. elishevae (Por) and L. canariensis Lang. A revised key to the genus is presented.
