A Decade of [in]Transition

“A Decade of [in]Transition: Reflecting on Past Challenges and Future Possibilities” describes the editorial experience of the award-winning, peer-reviewed journal [in]Transition on the occasion of its ten-year anniversary. After an introduction on the journal’s initial theoretical framing, the first part considers the production of new knowledge historically by engaging with select pieces published throughout the past decade while also reflecting on challenges the journal faced in the first decade of publication. It also considers early challenges faced by the editorial team such as the problem of establishing scholarly legitimacy for a new methodology and making the videographic method accessible to both junior and senior scholars. The second part considers the production of new knowledge via newer provocations, such as vidding, the embrace of YouTube, and other videographic modes that push against traditionally-defined boundaries of the “essayistic.” Our reflections occur on the eve of in[Transition] migrating—after a decade as a joint venture with MediaCommons—to the Open Library of Humanities (OLH), joining a roster of other open access scholarly journals.

The Intricacies and Prevalence of Gender-Based Violence in South Africa: Forms, Causes and Mitigation Measures

Gender-based violence (GBV) is prevalent in South Africa, primarily attributed to historical systems of social inequality, patriarchy and racism that dominated during the apartheid regimes, with lasting impacts persisting today. Thus, this study explored the intricate dynamics and prevalence of GBV in the context of South Africa. To realize this objective, the study employed a qualitative research methodology. To collect data, the study employed a secondary data technique such as a literature review of existing sources. Different datasets were used such as Google Scholar, National Institutes of Health, Google, and Scopus. The criterion employed to source information was the use of keywords which are shedding light on the social, cultural, and economic factors contributing to GBV. The study explored the root causes and manifestations of violence against women and girls. It is found that South Africa is grappling with high rates of GBV due to poverty, unemployment, cultural beliefs, and legal factors. To mitigate the prevalence and causes of GBV, efforts to combat GBV should encompass legal reforms and protection, prevention education, awareness, and NGO programmes that address the profoundness and complexity of violence against women and girls. The study has a vast potential to contribute to the production of new knowledge on forms, causes and mitigation measures for GBV. It will also contribute by addressing gaps or limitations in the existing literature on the phenomenon being studied. Preface

From 22nd to 24th December 2023, the 2023 3rd International Conference on Computational Modeling, Simulation and Data Analysis (CMSDA 2023) was held in Sanya, China via virtual form. The Conference attracted about 150 researchers, engineers, teachers and students worldwide working in or interested in the fields related to computational modeling, simulation and data analysis. The general objectives of the CMSDA 2023 were: To generate an adequate academic and scientific forum to present the work and experiences of researchers/teachers/students, contributing, in this way, to the production of new knowledge in the fields of computational modeling and data analysis. To create a path of establishing certain relationships for the speakers, authors and listeners, and providing opportunities for collaboration among the universities and institutions, in order to promote scientific research activities and develop relevant technologies. The subject areas in which the accepted papers were presented cover but are but not limited to: Perceptual Issues in Visualization and Modeling; Mathematical and Numerical Methods in Simulation and Modeling; Parallel and Distributed Computing Simulation; Big Data Visual Analysis; Data Analysis Algorithms and Systems, etc. We have invited renowned professors at home and abroad in these academic fields who shared with the attendees the latest innovations and research results in the domains of computational modeling, data mining and analysis. The Conference mainly featured keynote speeches by renowned experts and presentations of peer-reviewed papers by the authors. Among them, Prof. Daowen Qiu (Sun Yat-Sen University, China) shared his research on Distributed Quantum Algorithm for Simon’s Problem. Limited by today’s physical devices, quantum circuits are usually noisy and difficult to be designed deeply. The novel computing architecture of distributed quantum computing is expected to reduce the noise and depth of quantum circuits. And in his study, he presented the Simon’s problem in distributed scenarios and designed a distributed quantum algorithm to solve the problem. The algorithm proposed by him has the advantage of not only exponential acceleration compared with the classical distributed computing, but also square acceleration compared with the best distributed quantum algorithm proposed before. The Conference Proceedings was made so fruitful with all the excellent contributions collected from both domestic and international channels including the wonderful presentations in the Conference. Fertility apps, datafication and knowledge production in reproductive health.

Despite being the target of much criticism, commercialised digital technologies have proliferated in reproductive health arenas. Fertility applications (apps) are now some of the most popular and ubiquitous digital health tracking technologies, with millions of downloads. Previous scholarship has already underlined the problematic nature of their design and surveillance features. However, less attention has been paid to the wider effects of datafied knowledge availability. This research specifically asks: How does the proliferation of fertility apps shape knowledge (and associated practices) in reproductive health? Drawing on an analysis of key document sources, I here argue that fertility apps act as mediators between stakeholders, data and datafied outputs, thus facilitating: (1) the datafication of fertility awareness knowledge and the production of new datafied knowledge, (2) legitimation discourses and practices and (3) the remaking of private/public expertise and knowledge production networks in reproductive health. To effectively analyse the effects of commercialised reproductive health apps, this work argues for an understanding of data technologies that is informed by critical data studies.

Leaps of Knowledge

Chagas Disease is the main cause of heart failure in the Western Hemisphere. Initially restricted to the American continent, the people's migration to the Northern Hemisphere caused the disease to become present in the five continents. A scientific revolution occurs when an important discovery removes an obstacle to the serial production of new scientific knowledge of social interest. Such a revolution creates a paradigm accepted after experimental analysis and verification by scientists investigating the subject. An example of a leap in knowledge was the discovery of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, its invertebrate and vertebrate hosts, an agent of a new human disease recognized by Dr. Carlos Chagas at the beginning of the twentieth century. Certainly, the seminal work of Carlos Chagas inseminates enthusiasm that is essential to disturb the minds of scientists who produce leaps of knowledge about recondite aspects of Chagas disease at the University of Brasilia.

Ethical considerations in utilizing artificial intelligence for analyzing the NHGRI’s History of Genomics and Human Genome Project archives

Understanding “how to optimize the production of scientific knowledge” is paramount to those who support scientific research—funders as well as research institutions—to the communities served, and to researchers. Structured archives can help all involved to learn what decisions and processes help or hinder the production of new knowledge. Using artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs), we recently created the first structured digital representation of the historic archives of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health. This work yielded a digital knowledge base of entities, topics, and documents that can be used to probe the inner workings of the Human Genome Project, a massive international public-private effort to sequence the human genome, and several of its offshoots like The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE). The resulting knowledge base will be instrumental in understanding not only how the Human Genome Project and genomics research developed collaboratively, but also how scientific goals come to be formulated and evolve. Given the diverse and rich data used in this project, we evaluated the ethical implications of employing AI and LLMs to process and analyze this valuable archive. As the first computational investigation of the internal archives of a massive collaborative project with multiple funders and institutions, this study will inform future efforts to conduct similar investigations while also considering and minimizing ethical challenges. On the Pitfalls of Cultural Provincialism on the Example of the Translation of Damir Ovčina’s Novel When I Was a Hodja

Any interlingual translation that transposes a literary text from the original to the target language almost always conveys particular knowledge and life experiences from the culture in which the text was originally created. In this paper, the translation of the novel When I Was a Hodja by Damir Ovčina into Spanish is analyzed, focusing on culturally marked elements. The manner in which the cultural themes of the original text were transferred to the target culture is observed. It is emphasized that, when it comes to translations of literary narratives in which depictions of wars are exhibited, the translator’s task becomes all the more important because he/she contributes to the production of new knowledge and new ideas about wars through his/her translation, and, therefore, special attention must be given to the translation of cultures in such texts.

Non-linear thinking strategies in post-non-classical higher art education: A synergistic concept

Relevance. The relevance of the subject is conditioned upon the concept of �non-linearity� as a conceptual idea of the philosophy of education, which implies a new way of thinking in the context of the modern transitive, non-linear transformation of Ukrainian society.Purpose. The purpose of the research is to understand the significance of non-linear thinking strategies in the modern educational context and to make a valuable contribution to the development of science and art.Methodology. To achieve the purposes and implement the conceptual ideas, several research and search methods were chosen: conceptual and terminological analysis, comparative analysis, synthesis, generalisation of scientific perspectives, and extrapolation of theoretical and methodological provisions. The research methods in the research are based on the concepts of nonlinear dynamics and synergetics as interdisciplinary scientific knowledge.Results. The main results of the research are the identification of opportunities for implementing nonlinear thinking strategies in the context of higher art education. The necessity of expanding the forms and methods of art education and their connection with modern production and spheres of public life was substantiated. The research demonstrates that the mechanism for implementing these strategies in the content of higher art education is: the foundation of knowledge, overcoming its dispersion and fragmentation, the introduction of interdisciplinary scientific integration of knowledge, the diversification of forms and methods of art education and their relationship with production, and the connection with the main spheres of public life (dual forms of education, the production of new knowledge through various educational methods of a projective and research nature).Conclusions. The practical significance of the research is that the introduction of non-linear strategies in higher art education contributes to the deep development of art students, helps them adapt to constant changes in the modern world, and promotes the establishment of creative and innovative solutions in the artistic field.

The “Cartographic Impulse” and Its Epistemic Gains in the Process of Iteratively Mapping M87’s Black Hole

After the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration released in April 2019 the first empirical images of a black hole, an astrophysical object previously thought “unseeable,” much of the public discourse has approached these images as straightforward visual depictions of a black hole. This article challenges this view by showing that the first images of a black hole went beyond merely making an invisible cosmic object visible and that the images published in April 2019 were just the first in a series of black hole images the researchers continue producing. Drawing primarily on Sybille Krämer’s concept of the cartographic impulse, the article demonstrates that the Event Horizon Telescope images are, first and foremost, epistemic tools. These epistemic tools enable researchers to actively explore various physical aspects and dynamic properties of a black hole’s immediate environment and test theoretical predictions about it, thus making this elusive environment empirically knowable. To demonstrate this, the article analyses the mapping operations that combined automated algorithmic procedures with expert human judgment and through which these images were produced, read, and interpreted. It also examines how the different Event Horizon Telescope images relate to one another, which particular epistemic functions they fulfil in the research context, under which conditions, and with which limitations, thus tracing how these images facilitate the production of new scientific knowledge about black holes.

Perspectives on research on laser driven proton-boron fusion and applications

Recent experiments with high-intensity lasers have shown record production of α-particles by irradiating boron-hydrogen targets. This opened the way to completely new studies on proton-boron fusion with multiple goals:i) studies related to nuclear fusion. The proton-boron fusion reaction produces 3 α-particles and releases a large energy. It is considered an interesting alternative to deuterium-tritium fusion because it produces no neutrons, therefore no activation and radioactive wastes.ii) generation of novel laser-driven α-particle sources. Laser-driven α-particle sources are promising for their potential high brightness while remaining compact. They could be used for multidisciplinary applications, including medical ones.The COST Action CA21128 — PROBONO (PROton BOron Nuclear fusion: from energy production to medical applicatiOns) is the first international programme which aims at understanding the physics involved in laser-driven pB fusion, including the study of Equation of State of boron and boron compounds. Action's goals are to facilitate access to experimental infrastructures, maximize production of new knowledge, boost the career of young researchers by fostering opportunities for training, and finally interconnect researchers across countries building a well-organized community focused on pB research.

How do gatekeepers in networks influence the production of new knowledge? Evidence from Brazilian co‐invention networks

AbstractIn co‐invention networks, gatekeepers mediate technical knowledge exchange between economic agents and help overcome technological barriers and regional lock‐in. This study aims to investigate co‐inventors’ inventive activity and the potential effects of being a gatekeeper in a technologically underdeveloped country such as Brazil. A hierarchical two‐level model is applied for this purpose, considering individual and regional effects. The main results show that patent production at the individual level depends on their positioning as, or their direct collaborations with, gatekeepers in a co‐invention network. Results also show that other individual factors that are relevant to improving inventors’ inventive activity are having diversified knowledge, working in the industrial sector, and earning a higher salary in particular sectors, such as the manufacturing industry and higher education. Regional characteristics, such as GDP per capita and related and unrelated variety, also affect the inventors’ performance.

Postgraduate students’ internet use and prevalence of internet addiction: what roles can librarians play post COVID-19?

PurposeThis study empirically analyse the lived and individual experiences of internet use time among postgraduate students in a period where the line between the virtual and real is blurred. The infusion of the internet in higher education has not only facilitated the production of new knowledge but has also led to reports of internet addiction among many users during the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdowns. This study aims to evaluate the level of internet addiction among postgraduate students and the supportive information services role that librarians could provide.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, 279 postgraduate students completed a quantitative survey targeted at all the postgraduate students at a university campus in South Africa. Data was collected using an adopted internet addiction test questionnaire. The data was descriptively and inferentially analysed.FindingsAs many as 61 (22.7%) are always online, with most of the respondents, 112 (41.6%) spend 10 h or more on the internet daily. Laptop computers at 44.7% emerged as the primary electronic device used by postgraduate students for accessing the internet, surpassing the prevalence of mobile phone usage. On internet addiction level, internet use time had a statistically significant relation with problematic internet use levels in respondents. These results suggest that the increased uncontrolled internet use could negatively interfere with productive academic work of postgraduate students. However, based on the inferential statistical results, it can be concluded that academic use of the internet does not contribute to increased levels of internet addiction. The study recommends that librarians should provide literacy education and resources on how to use the internet safely and responsibly, including tips on setting boundaries, managing time online and productively using online information resources.Originality/valueThe study assesses problematic internet use among postgraduate students and provides suggestions on supportive information services that librarians could provide in an era where many library information services provision and higher education are hinged on the internet.

S’agenrer avec la trans-psychiatrie : de Dorchen Richter à Paul B. Preciado

GoalsIn this article we establish the history of transpsychiatry from the debate with Sigmund Freud to the present day. The objective of this epistemology is to show how gender choice, or a-gendering, has always been part of psychiatrists’ clinical practice with trans patients. MethodsWe use archival sources and the history of psychiatry since 1830 in order to establish the stages of clinical work around gender: firstly, by finding in German and American sources the first consultations and the innovative techniques that made treatment possible; secondly, by situating the different discourses against binary categorization; and finally, by situating the speech and action of trans people in the production of new experiential knowledge. ResultsThe results demonstrate how the notion of gender within clinical psychiatry has moved from binary categorization to a participatory transpsychiatry that includes trans people and professional psychiatrists. Going from Dorchen Richet to Paul B. Preciado, the results of surgical and hormonal techniques are compared with the modifications of institutions, associations, and psychiatric journals. DiscussionThe discussion between psychiatrists and trans people is highlighted here through the themes of identity, subjective speech, and clinical support protocols. ConclusionTranspsychiatry is the recognition of both transgendering and the transformation of gender, as a clinical entity, by psychiatry.

The relationship between university presses, e-book vendors, and academic libraries: A platform theory analysis

University presses, as one of the major content providers in the scholarly e-book market, especially in humanities and social sciences (HSS), play a critical role in the production and distribution of new knowledge and culture. We investigate the relations among university presses, academic libraries, and e-book vendors, by examining university presses’ perceptions of academic libraries and e-book vendors, and presses’ perceptions of themselves and the university press community. Findings are drawn from one-on-one interviews with 19 participants from 18 different university presses in the United States during 2020–2021. We observe a market structure for HSS e-books where most presses were satisfied with Big Four e-book vendors, including Project MUSE, EBSCO, ProQuest, and JSTOR, and lacked strong incentives to search for new e-book vendors. We find that most presses often treat libraries, including the one from the same institution, as their customers with limited interactions; findings also show university presses’ varied self-imaging, along with a shared perception about the collegiality of the university press community. We then explore the question of why the market is dominated by the Big Four through the theoretical lens developed in platform literature, and further examine the factors contributing to the low communication between university presses and academic libraries related to e-book distribution.

Bibliometric study on Ergonomics and Sustainability

Reflections on ergonomics in the context of the sustainability of organizations are an important strategy for the improvement of safe working environments. In the literature, the discussion that encompasses the relationship between ergonomics and business sustainability is a topic little explored. The objective of the present research is to map and explore the scientific production in the field of ergonomics and sustainability in the period from 2010 to 2020, in order to show the temporal evolution of research and the existing articulation between the themes. The research method is exploratory. To carry out the research, the bibliometric technique was chosen. To this end, articles were searched in the SciELO and Scopus databases, and theses and dissertations in the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD) of CAPES on the theme of ergonomics and sustainability. The bibliometric research allows to identify limits, contributions and potentialities that highlight the need for the production of research and new knowledge that associate the theme of ergonomics with sustainability. The development of an ergonomics program associated with the principles of sustainability seems to be a way to manage occupational risks with preventive measures in occupational safety and health.

Leveraging on intra- and inter-organizational collaboration in Industry 4.0 adoption for knowledge creation and innovation

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the impact of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies on knowledge creation for innovation purposes by assessing the relationships among the variety of I4.0 technologies adopted (breadth I4.0), the penetration of these technologies within the firm’s value chain activities (depth I4.0) and the mediating role of both internal (inter-functional (IF)) and external [with knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS)] collaborations in this process.Design/methodology/approachThe study employed a quantitative research design. By administering a survey to entrepreneurs, chief operation officers or managers in charge of the operational and technological processes of Italian manufacturing firms, the authors collected 137 useful questionnaires. To test this study's theoretical framework and hypotheses, the authors ran regression and mediation analyses.FindingsFirst, the results highlight the positive link between breadth I4.0 and depth I4.0. Moreover, the results show the key role played by increased collaboration among the firm’s business functions and by relationships with KIBS in creating knowledge to innovate processes and products when I4.0 technologies are adopted.Research limitations/implicationsThe variety of I4.0 technologies adopted enables a firm to use such technologies in various value chain activities. However, the penetration of I4.0 into the firm’s value chain activities (depth I4.0) does not per se directly imply the production of new knowledge, for which a firm needs internal collaboration among different business functions, in particular with the production area, or collaboration with external partners that favor I4.0 implementation, such as KIBS.Practical implicationsTo achieve innovation goals by creating new knowledge, especially in the manufacturing industries, firms should encourage internal and external collaboration when I4.0 technologies are adopted. Moreover, policy makers should not only consider fiscal incentives for the adoption of such technologies, but also encourage the building of networks between adopting firms and external actors.Originality/valueThe study is one of the first attempt that provides empirical evidence of how I4.0 enables the creation of knowledge to innovate processes and products, highlighting the relevance of collaboration both within the company and with external partners.

Co-creation for Transformative Innovation Policy: an implementation case for projects structured as portfolio of knowledge services

Background:Transformative Innovation Policy (TIP) encompasses a variety of policy frameworks that seek to use the potential of science, technology, and innovation to address societal challenges. To do so, it relies on inclusive co-creation processes for the design, implementation and evaluation programmes and policies that can drive systemic transformation towards sustainability. Aims and objectives:To date there are few empirical studies available on how this co-creation approach can be implemented at the level of programmes and projects working on transformative innovation, and what specific competences, processes and functions are required for the successful implementation of this framework. This paper seeks to provide empirical evidence on how to implement TIP at the project level. Key conclusions:This paper shows the importance of adaptability and modularity of processes that are used to translate the TIP framework to a specific context, allowing and encouraging processes of adaptation by project partners and other stakeholders. Secondly, we highlight how knowledge services can be used to translate and negotiate meaning for complex frameworks, resulting in the production of new knowledge that is not only contextually relevant, but that feeds into a larger pool of evidence of how theories apply to real-world cases. Thirdly, it highlights the importance of building teams with skills such as facilitation, brokering, communication, translation and embedding of science-based concepts and frameworks, and the ability to lead processes of co-design that ensure coherence across different interventions while being adaptable to varied project contexts.

Ethics Expertise between Imagined Publics and Imagined Scientists

The notion of value-neutral or at least independent scientific expertise is mainly based on the distinction between statements of facts and value judgement. The functioning of ethics committees, in particular bioethics committees, demonstrates that this separation is doomed to fail. These committees are supposed to regulate the production of new scientific knowledge through appeal to extra-scientific, non-epistemic values. In making regulatory judgments, the committees find themselves on the edge of a tension between `cognitive democracy' and epistemic inequality. Сommittees have a duty to represent the interests of the public, protecting its dignity and freedoms from possible abuse from researchers. At the same time, the committees, by conducting an “internal” judgment on the ethical permissibility of research projects, remain part of scientific groups and institutions. However, members of ethics committees often imagine academic colleagues as having an incomplete, deficient view of the public good. The committees find themselves in a field of conflict between the epistemic deficits of the imagined public and the ethical deficits of imagined scientists.
