Development of sustainable supplier selection index for new product development using multi criteria decision making

Abstract In view of the growing environmental consciousness among product users, the issue of product sustainability is one of the challenging tasks being faced by product designers, manufacturers, environmentalists and, decision makers in a new product development (NPD) environment. From sustainability perspective, selecting the right supplier from and among the pool of suppliers is an uphill task in the present day decision making environment. This article presents a framework for supplier selection from sustainability perspective. Attributes of supplier are first of all identified. The interrelationships among various identified attributes and their degree is also established. Based on the degree of interrelationships, a structure called sustainable supplier selection attributes graph is synthesized. To analyze this structure, a matrix is developed. This leads to the development of an index called sustainable supplier selection index. Various potential suppliers are analyzed from sustainability perspective and thus the best supplier can be selected. The framework proposed in this research article will enable product designers, manufacturers, environmentalists and, decision makers in effective decision making, wherever the issue of supplier selection is involved in a NPD environment. Two examples have been considered here in the present work to support and validate the proposed framework. Example one is to illustrate the proposed framework and, second example is for validation purpose.

Factors influencing knowledge transfer between NPD teams: a taxonomic analysis based on a sociotechnical approach

This paper sets out a taxonomy of the main factors influencing knowledge transfer (KT) between new product development (NPD) teams, based upon a sociotechnical approach whose framework consists of personnel, technological, work design, and external environment subsystems. The taxonomy was constructed from a literature survey combined with: (1) interviews and focus groups conducted with NPD experts and (2) a principal component analysis applied to a survey of 82 companies. Such steps were necessary because of the large amount of data collected from the literature review. They combine extensive explanatory descriptions from qualitative analysis together with strong confirmatory results given by multivariate quantitative analysis. The final set of 16 main factors summarized more than 100 elements of the NPD environment that influence KT between NPD teams. The key contributions of the proposed taxonomy are: (1) It is the first proposal of an organized understanding about KT influence factors based on a systemic and sociotechnical perspective; (2) New variables emerge from such analysis; and (3) It helps to understand better the elements needed for KT management in the NPD process.

How does PLM technology support knowledge transfer and translation in new product development? Transparency and boundary spanners in an international context

Information Technology is often viewed as imposing too much standardization and limiting flexibility in New Product Development (NPD). This paper aims at understanding how the use of Product Lifecycle Management Technology (PLM) contributes to knowledge sharing in an international NPD environment. The research is based on a longitudinal case study of a consumer goods industry group and involved development teams in Europe and local suppliers in China. Knowledge transfer and translation were observed through the reduction of communication glitches among members and increased NPD work with Chinese suppliers. The results of the case study indicate that (1), with an important codification effort, the use of PLM technology resulted in higher data and network transparency and enhanced knowledge transfer; (2) PLM served as a particularly useful tool for knowledge translation especially for boundary spanners in their work relationships. While PLM can be considered the main mechanism for knowledge transfer in this context, the case suggests that knowledge translation requires a boundary spanner intervention and that, with the use of PLM, they reinforce each other. Particularly noteworthy was a positive shift in the boundary spanners' roles from the project leader to the outsourcing engineer. In turn, this unintended consequence reinforced their credibility and the legitimacy of the use of the system with the Chinese suppliers.

A new support vector model-based imperialist competitive algorithm for time estimation in new product development projects

Time estimation in new product development (NPD) projects is often a complex problem due to its nonlinearity and the small quantity of data patterns. Support vector regression (SVR) based on statistical learning theory is introduced as a new neural network technique with maximum generalization ability. The SVR has been utilized to solve nonlinear regression problems successfully. However, the applicability of the SVR is highly affected due to the difficulty of selecting the SVR parameters appropriately. The imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) as a socio-politically inspired optimization strategy is employed to solve the real world engineering problems. This optimization algorithm is inspired by competition mechanism among imperialists and colonies, in contrast to evolutionary algorithms. This paper presents a new model integrating the SVR and the ICA for time estimation in NPD projects, in which ICA is used to tune the parameters of the SVR. A real data set from a case study of an NPD project in a manufacturing industry is presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed model. In addition, the comparison is provided between the proposed model and conventional techniques, namely nonlinear regression, back-propagation neural networks (BPNN), pure SVR and general regression neural networks (GRNN). The experimental results indicate that the presented model achieves high estimation accuracy and leads to effective prediction. Highlights? The Impact of NPD Strategy, Product Strategy, and NPD Processes on Perceived Cycle Time

Studies of new product development (NPD) have identified a variety of factors that influence cycle time, but most of these findings are based on case studies of individual firms. The few empirical studies that have attempted to examine the generalizability of these findings have tended to focus on one set of decisions (e.g., product strategy decisions) without considering the impact of organizational variables. To address this gap in the literature, this paper examines the impact on perceived cycle time of six variables that reflect a business unit's NPD strategy, NPD environment, product strategy, and NPD processes. The study also examines whether the impact of each of these antecedent variables is independent of the remaining variables. Contingency theory implies that cycle time performance will reflect the internal consistency of multiple contingencies and multiple structural characteristics. This implication is tested by evaluating the incremental explanatory power of two distance variables: one based on a theoretically defined ideal profile; and a second based on an empirically defined ideal profile. This analysis is important, because it permits a test of the proposition that understanding the pattern of contextual and structural variables adds additional insight to the understanding of cycle time performance. The analysis, based on data collected from 164 firms, indicates that the development of a formal NPD strategy, the creation of an appropriate climate for innovation, and the use of cross‐functional teams all contributed to improved perceptions of satisfactory cycle times. It was also found that executives in business units with broad product lines were less likely to perceive their cycle times as satisfactory. Contrary to expectations, an increasing emphasis on products involving breakthrough core processes was found to increase perceptions of satisfactory cycle times. Moreover, the use of heavyweight project managers had no significant impact on cycle time perceptions. The study also found no evidence to indicate that deviations from either a theoretically or an empirically defined ideal profile lengthen perceived cycle time.

A hybrid approach to concept selection through fuzzy analytic network process

Evaluating conceptual design alternatives in a new product development (NPD) environment has been one of the most critical issues for many companies which try to survive in the fast-growing world markets. Therefore, most companies have used various methods to successfully carry out this difficult and time-consuming evaluation process. Of these methods, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been widely used in multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems. But, in this study, we used analytical network process (ANP), a more general form of AHP, instead of AHP due to the fact that AHP cannot accommodate the variety of interactions, dependencies and feedback between higher and lower level elements. Furthermore, in some cases, due to the vagueness and uncertainty on the judgments of a decision-maker, the crisp pairwise comparison in the conventional ANP is insufficient and imprecise to capture the right judgments of the decision-maker. Therefore, a fuzzy logic is introduced in the pairwise comparison of ANP to make up for this deficiency in the conventional ANP, and is called as fuzzy ANP. In short, in this paper, a fuzzy ANP-based approach is proposed to evaluate a set of conceptual design alternatives developed in a NPD environment in order to reach to the best one satisfying both the needs and expectations of customers, and the engineering specifications of company. In addition, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the proposed approach.

Organisational learning in the new product development process: findings from three case studies in Brazilian manufacturing companies

New Product Development (NPD) process is a source of competitive advantage in nowadays global and ever-changing markets. Its continuous improvement is fundamental for keeping this advantage in the long run and depends on how fast and effectively the organisation learns from single and specific projects. Organisational Learning in the NPD process is unlikely to occur naturally, it needs to be planned and systematic. This paper provides a referential framework to help with the understanding of organisational learning phenomena in the specific NPD environment. Additionally, by means of an exploratory multiple case study, with single unit of analysis, and qualitative data collected from semi-structured in-depth interviews, it outlines methods and practices that facilitate and leverage organisational learning in the NPD process on a regular basis.

Self‐assessment of conflict management in client‐supplier collaborative new product development

PurposeThis research paper aims to present the critical managerial issues and a self‐assessment system of conflict management in client‐supplier collaborative new product development (NPD) environment.Design/methodology/approachCritical managerial issues and success factors for conflict management in client‐supplier collaborative NPD were first identified. A self‐assessment process and associated methodologies were then established. With the development of a prototype self‐assessment system, the proposed self‐assessment methodologies and process were validated in industry.FindingsA total of 13 critical factors for conflict management in client‐supplier collaborative NPD environment were identified. Based on the hierarchy model of the factors, a self‐assessment system and process, called PAIR, was established. The proposed self‐assessment system and process was developed and validated with six companies with positive results.Originality/valueConflict is an inevitable phenomenon in client‐supplier collaborative NPD, which affects NPD performance in terms of product quality, meeting of target delivery schedule and development cost. The developed system and process enables clients and suppliers to assess their conflict management practices and identify improvement areas. It provides a platform for the collaborating parties to continually improve their conflict management and in turn NPD performance.

Evaluation of team interaction patterns during NPD within European and Chinese contexts

As companies struggle to develop new products for the global market, more firms are facing the need to access the most critical resource for New Product Development (NPD) ? people. This geographical dispersion means separation not only by time and distance, but also by cultural differences. One of the challenges in managing global teams is interaction. To enhance the understanding of the team-level drivers for successful global NPD, this research focuses on a comparison of the NPD team interaction between European and Chinese contexts, using a simulated NPD environment.

An integrated approach to evaluating conceptual design alternatives in a new product development environment

As many companies have demonstrated over time, a conceptual design for a new product contributes greatly to an improvement in competitiveness, because it permits a reduction of costs, an increase in quality, and, often, a shortening of the time necessary to get the product on the market. That is why the evaluation of conceptual design alternatives created in a new product development (NPD) environment has long been very vital and a critical point for the future success of companies in fast-growing markets. These alternatives can be evaluated using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), one of the most commonly used multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques. This technique is used to reduce the number of conceptual design alternatives after ranking them using the scores obtained from the process. Furthermore, another technique, simulation analysis integrated with the AHP, is also used to help decision makers (product engineers or managers) perform economic analyses of the AHP's high-score alternatives using data from the generated simulation model of a real-life manufacturing system in which the final alternative is produced. In short, the objectives of this research are: first, to use the AHP technique to evaluate conceptual design alternatives in a NPD environment; second, to use a simulation generator integrated with this technique in order to perform economic analyses for the AHP's high-score alternatives. Finally, the results of both techniques, simulation and AHP, are used in a benefit/cost (B/C) analysis to reach a final decision on the conceptual design alternatives.

Cost targets and time pressure during new product development

Investigates the impact of using cost targets during new product development (NPD), in terms of design quality, product cost and development time. An NPD environment with cost targets is compared with an NPD environment where design engineers receive no specific cost targets, but are expected to “minimize” the cost level of future products. The impact of cost targets versus no‐cost targets is investigated in combination with high/low time pressure. The 2 * 2 factorial design was tested in a laboratory experiment that simulated a real design process, with customers asking for the highest design quality. The results demonstrate that cost targets during NPD lead to lower‐cost new products, while not impairing design quality or development time. However, under high time pressure, cost targets lead design engineers to work longer on the design, without a corresponding cost decrease.
