Actinostachysminuta, a new species of grass fern from Mindanao, Philippines.

Actinostachysminuta Amoroso & Coritico (Schizaeaceae), from Mindanao, Philippines, is described herein as a new species. This species is distinguished from all other species of Actinostachys (grass ferns) by its notably short and narrow fronds, distinct triangular stipe, and bifid apex of the sorophore lamina with profuse white long hairs. This species is distinct from the other known Philippine species of Actinostachys by its diminutive epiphytic habit and a habitat restricted to the trunks of the tree fern Sphaeropterispolypoda (Baker) R.M.Tryon. A taxonomic key to the species of Philippine Schizaeaceae that incorporates the new species is provided.

A new smut fungus on a new grass: Sporisorium capillipedii-alpini (Ustilaginales) sp. nov. infecting Capillipedium alpinum (Poaceae) sp. nov., from Sichuan, China

A new smut fungus, Sporisorium capillipedii-alpini (Ustilaginales), and a new species of grass, Capillipedium alpinum (Poaceae), on which it is growing, are described and illustrated. The collections were made in western Sichuan, China. Capillipedium alpinum differs from other species of Capillipedium by its diminutive size and short, slender inflorescence. Sporisorium capillipedii-alpini is compared with the species of Sporisorium with similar symptoms (destroying all spikelets of an inflorescence) that infect Capillipedium, Botriochloa, and Dichanthium. The new smut fungus differs from these species as follows: from Sporisorium taianum by having larger spores with minutely echinulate spore walls, from S. dichanthicola by having larger spores, from S. sahayae by having lower spore wall ornamentation and thinner spore walls, from S. andropogonis-annulati by having larger spores, and smaller sterile cells with thinner walls, and from S. mysorense by possessing minutely echinulate spore walls and differently colored spores and sterile cells. The types of S. andropogonis-annulati, S. mysorense, and S. sahayae were re-examined and detailed descriptions of these species are given. A key to the smut fungi of Sporisorium, that infect Capillipedium, Botriochloa, and Dichanthium and destroy all spikelets of the inflorescence of an infected plant, is also provided.

Tripogon idukkianus (Poaceae: Chloridoideae), a new species from India

Tripogon idukkianus, a new species of grass from the Ramakkalmedu hill slopes of Idukki district of Kerala, South India is described and illustrated. The new species differs from T. anantaswamianus in having 5–13 mm long, acuminate glabrous leaves, 6–14 flowered spikelets with secund florets, 4-lobed scabrid lemmas with 3 awns each, and 2-keeled ciliate paleas with an obtuse or acute apex with two subapical setae.

Tripogon bimucronatus (Poaceae: Chloridoideae: Tripogoninae), a new species from India

Tripogon bimucronatus Thoiba & Sunil, a new species of grass from the Nelliyampathy Hills, Palakkad District of Kerala, South India is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to Tripogon vellarianus Pradeep but differs by having adaxially scabrid, linear-acuminate leaves; ligules a fringe of hairs to 2.5 mm long; spikelets with 6-8 closely packed florets; lower glume asymmetrical; upper glume awned; lemma awn scabrid; palea elliptic-lanceolate, apex bimucronate and notched at the centre.

Tripogon tirumalae (Poaceae), a new species from the Seshachalam hills of Andhra Pradesh, India

Tripogon tirumalae, a new species of grass from the Seshachalam hill ranges, Andhra Pradesh, India, is described and illustrated. The new species differs from Tripogon sivarajanii in having ciliate membranous ligules, a shorter inflorescence, more florets, bearded lemma base, and a median awn longer than the lemma; and from Tripogon trifidus in having culms 60−75 cm high, glabrous leaf sheaths, and lemmas with a single median awn which is 1.5 times longer than the lemma.

A New Species of Styppeiochloa De Winter (Poaceae) from Angola

A new species of grass, Styppeiochloa catherineana from Angola is described and illustrated, and a new combination, Styppeiochloa hitchcockii, is made.

Dimeria balakrishnaniana: A New Grass from Tamil Nadu, India

Summary. Dimeria balakrishnaniana, a new species of grass from Tamil Nadu, is described with illustrations. Dimeria balakrishnaniana Ravikumar, Sreekumar & Lakshmanan sp. nov. Dimeria borii Sreekumar, V. J. Nair & N. C. Nair affinis sed nodis villosis, foliis vaginis dorso carinatis; rachidibus latioribus, usque 1.5 mm latis; glumis inferis non alatis differt. Typus: India, Lakshmanan 87543 (holotypus CAL; isotypi K, MH). Annual. Culms 12-25 cm high, erect; nodes villous. Leaves linear-lanceolate, acuminate at apex, rounded at base, 4-6.7 x 0.2-0.5 cm, villous; midrib prominent; sheaths 2-3.5 cm long, keeled, villous above, glabrous below; ligule c. 1 mm long, membranous, fimbriate. Racemes solitary, very rarely paired, each 2-4 cm long; rachis flattened, c. 1.5 mm wide, wavy and ciliate along margins, glabrous at apex. Spikelets elliptic or ovate-elliptic, 45 mm long; callus hairs 1-1.5 mm long. Lower glume oblong-lanceolate, shortly acuminate at apex, 4-4.5 x 0.75-1 mm, chartaceous, ciliate along the dorsal side except towards apex. Upper glume ovate-lanceolate, acuminate at apex, 4.5-5 x 1.5-2 mm, coriaceous, broadly winged, wings c. 0.5 mm wide, corky in the lower -, papery towards apex, ciliate along margins, scabrid towards apex. Lower floret empty; lemma ellipticlanceolate, 2-2.5 x 0.75-1 mm, delicate, faintly 1-nerved, hyaline, margins ciliate in the upper half. Upper floret bisexual; lemma 2.5-3 x 1-1.5 mm, notched and awned in the sinus, delicate, 1-nerved, glabrous; awn 10-12 mm long, slender, column 3-4 mm long, twisted, brown, bristle 6-8 mm long, pale, scabrid; stamens 2, anthers 1-1.5 mm long; ovary ellipsoid, c. 0.250.5 mm; styles 1-1.5 mm long, slender; stigmas 1-1.5 mm long, feathery.

Paul F. Bruggemann (1890-1974)

Mr. Paul F. Bruggemann, Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America and a former Editor of Arctic, died in Ottawa on 18 August 1974 after a prolonged illness. He was born on 28 February 1890 in Germany, where he received his formal education and graduated in mechanical engineering. His lifelong devotion to natural history began during his early years before the First World War, a period when he also developed an enthusiasm for aeronautics (he flew one of the early Wright machines) and succeeded in becoming a champion figure skater. His capacity for individual initiative showed itself in exploits as a motorcycle despatch rider during his war service in the German army. In 1926, he emigrated to Canada. He lived for 25 years in Lloydminster, Alberta, where he set up a small business for the repair of automobiles and farm machinery. During these years he also formed an extensive collection of moths, butterflies and plants from the surrounding region. He spent one winter alone in a small cabin in the forest country of northern Saskatchewan making a special study of English and the Scandinavian languages. In the spring of 1949, Paul Bruggemann joined the staff of the Entomological Research Institute of the Canadian Department of Agriculture as a field worker with the Northern Insect Survey. He continued in that capacity until 1954, conducting insect and plant surveys in the Dawson region of the Yukon Territory, and in the Northwest Territories in the region of Repulse Bay, Melville Peninsula, Alert and Eureka on Ellesmere Island, and Mould Bay on Prince Patrick Island. While at the latter location he discovered a new species of grass which became known as Puccinella bruggemanni. During his winter breaks from field work he photographed type specimens of Lepidoptera for the International Union of Biological Sciences. Following his retirement from the service of the Canadian Government, he edited Arctic with distinction for the eight years 1956-64. He then broke new ground by becoming a free-lance translator into English, mainly of papers on biological subjects in German, French, Norwegian, Swedish and Portuguese - work which he continued until shortly before his death. Paul Bruggemann was a member of the Entomological Society of Canada and the Lepidopterists' Society, a contributor to an annotated list of the Lepidoptera of Alberta, the joint author of three publications on arctic botany and entomology, and the editor of a work on the flora of Alaska.
